    Abstract [en]

This paper describes what some 9th grade students think of their sex education in school, especially when it comes to gender, sexual identity, norms and deviation. I have been using group interviews in two different schools, two groups per school. The result of the students' answers have been analysed on the basis of queer theory focusing on gender and sexual identity. The result of the study shows that the students consider their sexual education to be lacking, especially when it comes to gender, sexual identity, norms and deviation. Another conclusion of the analysis is that a sex education grounded in queer theory would be more inclusive.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the effects of a person's appearence on grading. 80 teachers in Swedish have assessed a text, illustrated with a picture of the supposed author. The pictures were varied by attractiveness, personality in looks, and gender. Furthermore, a text illustrated by a drawing and an unillustrated text were also used in the study. The texts were sent to the teachers by e-mail and assessed on a scale from 1-10 and the Swedish grading scale IG-MVG (Did not pass – Passed – Passed with credit - Passed with great credit). The photos used had been assessed by university students with regards to attractiveness, intelligence, sympatethicness and ambitiousness. The later three categories were put together in a category named Personality in Looks. No significant effects of looks on grading were found in this study. However, substantial differences indicated that attractiveness seems to have a slight negative effect on grading and that the category Personality in Looks seems to have a slightly positive effect. Gender differences were nearly significant, in favour of the male authors.

A business to change the world: Moral responsibility in textbooks for International Economics2011Inngår i: Utbildning och Demokrati, ISSN 1102-6472, E-ISSN 2001-7316, Vol. 20, nr 1, s. 79-96Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents an empirical analysis of textbooks for International Economics in upper secondary schools with a focus on moral responsibility for the environment and society. The purpose is to analyze the meanings offered to students regarding the scope of taking moral responsibility in relation to the role of a business person. Four different meanings are formulated as a result of the study: one states that a business only can take responsibility in order to obey laws and respond to consumer demands, a second and third meanings imply that, a business can make demands, to different extents, on subcontractors. A fourth meaning include that a business (apart from making profit) also can be a tool for change. The different meanings are discussed in relation to different functions of education (Biesta 2008, Säfström 2005) and Education for Sustainable Development. The main argument is that a tool for change-meaning, contributing to a subjectification function of education, ought to have an increased space in education, if we want students who are engaged in sustainability issues regarding the environment and the society also to see a future working within the business world. This is equally important if we want business students to see a future working for sustainable development.

    Abstract [en]

The main aim of this essay is to examine how the Swedish comprehensive teachers reflect on and work with the Biblical stories and texts in their teaching. The research questions are; how are the Swedish teachers working with the Biblical stories and texts; what sort of stories do they choose and why; what kinds of emphasis do they put on the stories and texts and how do they perceive them. We have performed a qualitative study and the results show that Biblical stories and texts receive limited attention in the classrooms. The study shows that this is due to a number of factors such as lack of time, ignorance, and lack of knowledge regarding the issues. It also shows that the Swedish teachers rely on the teachers of religious studies to bring up the subject and that they are afraid they might offend some of their students. Paradoxically, the essay also shows that all teachers believe the study of Biblical stories and texts play an important role in improving the students understanding of literature in general.

    Abstract [en]

Studies show that the performance of Swedish students in the subject of mathematics is to be considered somewhat average. The government has therefore decided to assist with extended project funding to schools on a local level in order to improve these results.

Schools will, unlike before, practice teaching suited for the individual needs of students based on their previous experiences, knowledge level, language comprehension and their environment. This is also clearly stated in the Swedish school curriculum.

My survey shows how three teachers in primary school actually work towards individualized teaching of mathematics and what methods they prefer. This survey also answered what these teachers considered to be the obstacles and opportunities with individualized teaching methods. The difference in approach of how to practice this has also been documented.

The survey, based on interviews and class observations, have been analyzed and compared to previous research and theories in the field of teaching practices. The conclusion of the survey is that all teachers have a different opinion and approach on how to practice individualized teaching methods. The difference in interpretation of the concept is clear. The biggest obstacle is said to be lack of resources in the terms of work material and staff.

    Abstract [en]

Youths tend to have a bad reputation. Their outspokenness and spontaneity are two of many reasons to why they are seen as rude and disrespectful. The creativity, curiosity and not least the courage to have opinions and attitudes are in such young age not yet weakened. Youths, their thoughts and attitudes change quickly. This essay will deal with a selected group of youths and their attitudes to the surrounding society. The aim of this study is to examine the relation between youth’s socioeconomic condition, growth environment, spare time habits and attitudes to the surrounding society. The respondents are 13 and 15 years old.

A personal interest in youth’s creativity, thoughts and attitudes is the choice of topic. I will, furthermore, daily in my future employment meet, learn from and be surrounded by youths. An increasing understanding for youth’s lives will thus be significant for my future years as a teacher.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate into the use of discussions in the classroom to help the pupils develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and operations. The empirical data contain interviews with two teachers and observations from their lessons. The purpose of the interviews was to find out what importance the teachers ascribed to the ability of their pupils to talk about mathematics, and how they organised their classes to encourage mathematical discussions. With the observations, I was able to see the interaction in the classroom and hear discussions between the teacher and the pupils, as well as between the pupils themselves.

The interviewed teachers proved to share my own belief in the results of researchers like Malmer (1999) and Löwing (2006) about the importance of verbal discussion, argumentation and reflection during mathematics classes. But convictions derived from the research of others are one thing, the practical application of the wisdom in the classroom another. My study showed that it is a very complex problem for the teacher to create a classroom that allows and enables mathematical discussions between the pupils themselves. The teachers have to plan their classes well and form smaller groups with the mathematical conversation in mind, if the pupils are to use, discuss and reflect upon mathematical concepts and talk about different strategies for solving a problem. There is also a need for individualisation. The teachers have to use many different methods and allow a variety of materials for the pupils to work with, if they are all to be involved in the mathematical conversation in the classroom.

    Abstract [en]

This research is about how the educators view the best way to help multilingual students develop their understanding for mathematics. The aim of the study is to identify the different aspects from the teacher’s point of view of this new approach of teaching: what are the limitations versus the opportunities? The study is limited to a multicultural school in Stockholm and to the experience of a few class teachers and mother tongue teachers.

A qualitative approach was used and the interview was selected as the method to collect the data. Three class teachers as well as three mother tongue teachers were interviewed about their experiences. The interviews were recorded and transcribed word by word.

There have been discussions about the skills in mathematics in multilingual speaking students, and that their greatest obstacle of understanding mathematics is that they are being taught in another language than their own mother tongue. The National Agency for Education have stated that multilingual students who gets high grades in the mother tongue education tend to get higher grades in mathematics as well (Skolverket 2008). The result shows that the staff, the class teachers and mother tongue teachers, have been able to build a bridge between mathematics and their student’s mother tongue. The results also indicate that one’s mother tongue is a key component in student’s understanding and management of mathematics. This also benefits the student’s development of their self-esteem: mathematics taught in the student’s mother tongue helps the student to develop both their first and second language side by side.

    Abstract [en]

In primary school reading-books in Swedish language is something that students come across early in school and have done ever since the 1800s. After World War II there have been major changes in society. 1962 there was a school reform where the school turned into a nine-year system of compulsory education. That is why it is interesting to see what reading books contain with regard to notions of children, family and class and how the developments have been from the 1950s until the present time. This study aims to analyze and compare the different aspects of how notions of children, family and class are produced in the reading books for primary school for pupils in third grade, between 1950 and 2009.

    The research questions were:

    • What are the notions of children, family and class in the reading-books?
    • What differences/similarities exist in the reading books from the 1950s to the  recent decades?
    • What could be the reason?

I have chosen to apply qualitative text analysis originating in idea analysis. Because my focus was based on an attempt to track, analyse and compare the concepts, perceptions and representations of the reading books for third grade. My results shows that the children portrayed in the books from 1950-1965 are well mannered. And their relationships with the adults are strong and they learn from their parents, grandparents and relatives. The study also shows that the children portrayed in the reading books from 1976 and forward, make their own choices and play more major roles in the stories. The results show that the nuclear family is seen as an ideal. The study also shows that there are children in the book from 2009 who are experiencing economic inequalities in the form of clothes and other belongings. Overall, in the books i think that the middle class shows strongest but the markers seen in the stories are relatively vague to be seen in the stories.

    Abstract [en]

In this empirical study I have investigated how preschool teachers relate to the free play at the preschool. At the same time I have investigated how the free play is adapted into everyday practice in the preschool. Previous research shows that children process what they experienced in the free play. The child retrieves content to play with through things they have experienced, such as family life, preschool and so on. To play, grow and continue, it is important that free play may take place and space in the daily activities at the preschool. To do so the preschool teachers must organize time so that the free play can have the space that it requires at the preschool. The method I have chosen for this study is two interviews with two preschool teachers and four observations at a preschool. In the interviews I found out that the preschool teachers believes that participation and the presence of an adult in the free play is of great importance. If you as a preschool teacher are involved in the free play at the preschool, you have to make sure that the free play continues to develop and survives. However, both interview preschool teachers believe that free play is often suffers, as a result of the daily routines at the preschool. In the four observations I have carried out, I have compared the interview responses with what happened in the observations at the preschool.

Pedagogernas påverkan ur ett genusperspektiv: En kvalitativ studie om hur pedagogerna påverkar barnen ur ett genusperspektiv i förskolan2009Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this work is to explore and illuminate the circle times function and importance of preschool by the pedagogue perspective and the circle time design in relation to children's age group composition. The study questions are:

    • What is the purpose of circle time in preschool educational activities according to the teacher and how does the teacher look at his own role?
    • How do the teachers plan, design and perform the circle time of small children and big children's section? What similarities and differences exist?

This is a qualitative study based on interviews with four preschool teachers and observations of their circle times. Research and theories showed that the circle time is a social training, provide a sense of community and is a ritual that gives a good daily rhythm.

The results of the study demonstrate that the circle time is an important routine that occurs for a short time daily in early childhood education. The circle time organizes and structures the day for both children and staff group. The circle time strengthens community, creates a group sense and also involves social skills training as well as language training. Teachers felt that the circle time is always a learning situation where the children always learn something.

The circle time was planned and designed, based on the children's interests and needs. It was adapted to children of different ages, understanding, ability and level of development.

The small children-assembly circle times were designed to be short, attractive and started from small children's concrete everyday reality, while circle times of big children could be sophisticated and demanding, with more space for conversation and discussion. Even though teachers have started from a clear child's perspective in the interviews they looked on their part as a leading and demanding, which they believed was caused by large groups of children and staff shortages.

    Abstract [en]

This is a study of the national test in 3rd grade. The national test is obligatory and is conducted in 5th and 9th grade, but since the spring of 2009 the tests also become mandatory in 3rd grade. The case study of this research is to find out how children in 3rd grade perceive the purpose of the national test. The survey should also clarify how students think and feel about the national test, and how they feel before the national test and after they have finished writing the test. Has the test positive or negative influence on children? The survey will also show how much teachers clarify what the significance of the national test is for the students. The study was conducted as a qualitative survey. The testing was performed at two different schools. In each school the survey was conducted in two classes in which questionnaires were adapted to students from 3rd and 4th grade. Why I use two different questionnaires adapted to these two grades is to find out different aspects of the time before and after the national test. What appears to be obvious is in this study is that these particular students who have completed the survey have no knowledge of the purpose of the national test.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to explore how I can meet children with different kinds of attention deficit disorders. What can I do when the child kicks me and makes me cry? How can I handle it right so that the child and I can feel good? In my text I am writing about how I can prioritize my way when I am angry. I wonder how to prioritize my feelings and feel safe with the other person. I am developing these questions in my text. My method is to reflect and question the knowledge I acquired during my work at the school. In the text I use literatures to the problem and have a short discussion with an old pedagogue. I am discussing myself when I meet the troublesome child and how I can deal with my own emotions. In the hard situation I have to look at the problem. I can’t see the bigger picture in this situation. For a good situation we need a solution and need to meet the child professionally with our own wise choices. I have not found a solution and I need to learn how I can handle my own emotions at work and what skills I need to learn when I get angry in a difficult situation.

The purpose of the thesis is to see how Turkish students understand their bilingualism. I have tried to explain bilingualism as a phenomenon and give an insight in national steering documents on the basis of different concepts used by researchers.

The method consists of qualitative interviews with standardized character. Five upper-secondary school students participated and independently discussed the answers.

The result from the interviews is the participators view on bilingualism. The answers were varying. I have got the answer of my question through the interviews and researches. The result is also connected to relevant theories.

    Abstract [en]

The objective of the essay has been the studying of the importance of religion for children. To answer and satisfy my objective, I have some questions: How do children talk about their own and others’ religions? In what way do children associate themselves to religion? Which meaning does religion have for children’s identities? Which thoughts rise about religiontuition in the school?

To answer the problem formulation, I have done a qualitative interview study with five children of different religious and cultural backgrounds in a Swedish communal school. The results showed that children’s thoughts about religion are mostly inherited from the parents. Religion and identity are close to each other. The children live in different worlds which  makes them not be apart of one or the other.

Religion is a sensitive subject that leads to a big silence among children and to the fear of talking or discussing the subject. Children can use religion as a tool for bullying.

Glidande roller och tabubelagda ämnen: Om eleven som samtalsledare, nyheter i förälderns roll och problemhantering i elevledda utvecklingssamtal2009Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Since the beginning of 1940 there have been externally developed tests in Sweden. Their appearances have changed over the years together with the cognitive approach. Nowadays, this kind of tests is going by the name of the national tests, which was introduced in the year of 1994. When the Swedish National Agency for Education received the assignment to develop new purposes and national tests to the third grade students, debate took a bounce. The matter was well discussed; national tests in third grade or not?

The national tests thus far carried out four rounds in the third grade and the purpose of my study was to find out how teachers are reasoning about the tests. The study will answer following question at issues: What are the teachers’ thoughts about having national tests in third grade, how are they reasoning around the tests design and do the tests affect the teachers’ situation, if that is the case how?

To answer the questions above I have done a qualitative survey with quantitative elements which has been answered by teachers whom are teaching students from first to third grade in a municipality. As a complement I have interviewed two of the surveys participators. The results show that most of the teachers are positive to the using of national tests in third grade. Furthermore the majority are pleased with the design of the tests. The study also shows that the teachers experience an influence from the tests on their teaching, but their opinions whether this is positive or negative differs between teachers. However, the teachers agree that the tests have a negative effect on their working situation, especially through a perspective of time.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Language is the basis for all communication. Man needs a rich and nuanced language to understand and be understood. With a new language is a new culture, a new identity and a new need to be included in a community. Language develops only if it is used. The use of the language through conversation, reading and writing, working in various forms, gives the student capability to process the inflow of a future outflow.

Arian Asinger is the author of this essay written at Södertörn University spring semester 2009. Instructor for the paper has been Per Sundgren. The essay has been named "Inflow - processing - output. A study of language- and knowledge based development approach in international classes".

This work puts forward four teachers teaching methods in international classes in a school in central Sweden. With international classes meant preparation classes to newly arrived refugees and immigrants with a different mother tongue than Swedish. The main purpose of this study is to present the teaching methods of research considers the promotion of pupils' learning and language skills development. This has been lodged against the teachers working in reality and what teaching methods they use.

The material is collected from a qualitative research through interviews. The result is then analyzed against previous research which shows differences in teaching methods and educational philosophy which might depend on teachers' educational background in the subject Swedish as a second language.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to use qualitative interviews with students at Södertörn University to find out what drives the men who begin to study for preschool teachers, how they are treated and how they are influenced by others. I also wanted to find out what the informants believe is the cause to why so few men apply to the program and what they think need to happen to change this. This is a qualitative study based on the selected students' experiences. In order to get different perspectives, I chose to interview three students and former students. One of them chose to terminate their studies after half the time, the second is at the end of the program and the third graduated a couple of years ago and has been working for a while.I originated in the theory of ethical concepts of gender, gender contract, "token" and hegemonic masculinity. Previous research addresses that the perception of men in pre-schools can look very different. Some think there is a need for men in pre-schools to implement typical male activities in an otherwise female-coded environment. Other thinks that men should show that you can expand gender roles. Men in pre-schools may also be suspected of or subjected to rumors of pedophilia. Some people think that men should not take care of children. Meanwhile, the male role is changing and it begins to be seen as more natural that men can work with children. However, more targeted campaigns are needed to attract more men to the profession.Even the informants agree on the need for information and targeted campaigns to attract more men. They think that the profession is well suited for men. However they may feel a bit lonely sometimes because they are a minority and feel a bit singled out. They point out that people think very differently about men in pre-schools which affect how they are treated. Therefore, they find it important to discuss the various ideas and prejudices that exist to learn to deal with and respond to them. Both research and the informants show that men's roles are changing and that it begins to be seen as more natural for men to take care of children. However, it is a process and it takes different lengths of time. Therefore, there is some confusion. A male pre-school teacher may see himself as a leader and representative of the new male role.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this essay is to analyze teachers (in mother language and preparatory classes) perspective and see how they choose to work with different tools, and at the same time see how the teachers approach the pupils from an intercultural, mathematical and linguistical perspective. We also want to observe if there are any similarities and/or differences between the teachers in how they choose to work with the pupils with second language in the classroom.

Our keywords are intercultural approach, mathematical treatment and linguistical treatment. We study the working methods and tactics practiced by the teachers, which we find relevant to use in this essay. To get a wider perspective we decided to observe two different schools in different districts. We use a qualitative method as the basis in our research which provides a deeper view of the school environment.

Result: This essay shows that the teachers have similarities in their approach to students which contains an intercultural perspective. It was also shown in different ways in both schools how the teachers approached the pupils on the subjects of mathematic and linguistic. Regarding cooperation with teachers of mother language it is said to play a crucial role in how pupils with second language will develop their understanding and vocabulary.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Dyslexia is a functional problem, affecting the ability to read and write. As future teachers, we will meet students with dyslexia. The purpose with this exam study has therefore been to describe dyslexia and its causes. Another purpose was to find out – from the perspective of a teacher – what experienced teachers know about the problem and how they in practical work can enhance the learning process for students with dyslexia, both individually and in class. A connected purpose was to study results from research in how to facilitate learning for dyslectic students. (N = 27). The hypothesis was that teacher’s knowledge about dyslexia was too shallow. Our method of data collection was quantitative and qualitative enquiries in two schools in Stockholm County. The result derived from the answers was rather similar in character and confirmed our hypothesis.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Pupils’ responsibilities are presented in the curriculum Lgr11 as a given thing. There has been some research in the field of pupil responsibility, but research covering school grades 1-3 could not be found. The study investigates theories of responsibility, pupil responsibility, power and pupil influence.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find out the teachers’ views on pupil responsibility. The study will answer two questions; firstly what is the interviewed teachers’ view on the concept of pupil responsibility in primary schools (grade 1-3)? Secondly what do the interviewed teachers’ see as responsible behavior and what do the teachers expect from pupils’, regarding pupil responsibility in primary school (grade 1-3)?

Method: In order to investigate this, five structured qualitative interviews were made, with five teachers from primary schools. The study is based on these five teachers’ views, which means that the study can not give an overall view of pupil responsibility.

Result and conclusions: The study shows that these teachers have similar views on the concept of pupil responsibility. Pupil responsibility involves responsibility for their studies and to be disciplined, for themselves and the collective. Teachers expect responsible behavior, keeping in mind the age and the mental level the pupils are at.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to show the opportunities and difficulties of teaching within distance education. I will show this from two different parts of the world. One being Sweden and the other Australia, both countries run a distance education program with similar reasons students whom travelling, some living hundreds of miles from any schools and some students with health and or social disadvantages. This study is based on the actual teacher’s accounts and experiences the opportunities and difficulties in teaching in distance. The main method of collecting this data has been through interviews with the teachers, a distance-school administrator and a researcher from Sweden. A survey was mailed to Australia which has been filled in and returned by an administrator/head teacher for distance education. The main research questions asked were:

    • What are teacher’s experiences in distance education?
    • What are the opportunities and difficulties by teaching in distance education?

The interview conversations has been structured, generalised and reformulated in order to form a concrete set of teachers overall experiences. The literatures were support for many of the teacher’s thoughts and even things that compliment and add a broader picture of the subject and the results are discussed and weighed up against teacher’s own experiences.

The study reaches the conclusion of how the teachers express are of opportunities and difficulties in teaching the students in the best possible way, to stimulate learning by not only focus on teaching content but also on its learning environment.

Identitet och identitetsskapande bland assyrisk/syrianska ungdomar i Södertälje2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The key purpose of this research has been trying to understand, and study how assyrian/syriac youth create their identity under the influence of two or several different cultures. We have also looked upon how different factors such as history, religion, language, family and school play a role in the youths identity development.

We have used a qualitative method in our study where we have interviewed six assyrian/syriac youth. Because of their Christian faith the assyrian/syriac group has been forced to migrate from their countries to different parts around the world. In the new countries the group has been forced to create and live in a diasporaculture. The city Södertälje in Sweden has developed to become a metropole for this ethnic group where they have founded a substantial diasporaculture. In the new countries the assyrian/syriac youth have developed an attitude towards the new country and its culture, which is a mixture of their home culture and the majority communitys. Having to integrate and adjust to two different cultures, while at the same time trying to create ones own identity can sometimes lead to conflicts within the own ethnic group and the majority community. It appeared in the study that the assyrian/syriac youth felt like a duality between the home culture and the culture of the majority community, which felt like living a dual life.

I have been observing students during lessons and taken notes on teacher´s comments, which analysed. I have come to the conclusion that the students are awase of the power roles conserning gender and gender. In this classroom the heteronormativity still is a common phenomenon. In this classroom heteronormativy is occuring in student diskussions and dialogues. Even if the teacher claims that they work according to the Swedish law of equality, equal treatment plan and curriculum gender and heteronormativity is a problem. Students are aware of the power roles and use it when they talk and act.

    Abstract [en]

The vast majority of parents want their children to succeed and become successful in one way or the other. The very first is that the child will graduate from school. In today’s society which is characterized by career-driven parents, especially mothers, one wonders if somewhere along the way parents are prioritizing their own careers over their children’s school achievements. This might be true in some cases, but in others it could merely be that parents are expecting more from their children’s future. Given that working days are getting longer, quality family time has become essential to most people. The purpose of this study is to find out which strategies mothers use to influence their children and if mothers education or background has no bearing on how they reason about their children’s future. This study was conducted using a qualitative research based on interviews. With the help of interviews, I will find out how and why mothers are using certain strategies and methods in their upbringing and if their backgrounds have been important to the way they raise their children. However, due to time constraints and the small size of the interview pool I can not make a generalization. The theories I use is based primarily on Bourdieu’s capital theory, which I think is best when the study primarily is to examine the strategies mothers use. My conclusion in this study proved that women use different levels of “curling” and discipline in their upbringing. However, it is common to all the woman in the study, that they use more love and emotions than what they themselves experienced as children.

    Abstract [en]

This study deals with teachers ideas about the physical environment of a mobile preschool and how it affects children’s learning. The essay describes how the preschool bus is decorated and how a normal day works in the mobile bus. The survey was based on the following questions:

    • Are there disadvantages and advantages in terms of physical environment in the mobile preschool from an educator based perspective?
    • What are the teacher’s thoughts about the impact on children’s learning in terms of the physical environment on the bus?

Summary: To answer my questions I have participated in activities during the day and I have used the interviews to find out the teachers thoughts. My theoretical points have focused on the benefits of being outdoors as children in the mobile preschool spend much of the day outdoors. The conclusion of my investigation is that the mobile preschool is a well-structured and well thought preschool. The teachers have a positive attitude when it comes to the environment both in the bus (indoor environment) and outside the bus (outdoor environment). They believe that the exchange of different environments affect children’s learning but only in a positive way and those children learn even more than those children who attend a regular preschool.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to explore how educators are supposed to prioritize their work at the preschool so that all children are listened to and the conditions necessary for kids to dare to express their feelings and thoughts are in place. How is the relationship important for the child's learning? How do I become a committed educator who knows how to interpret and prioritize my work so it benefits children's learning? I am developing these questions in two parts in my following text. Firstly I am writing about why it is important that we who work as pedagogues meet the child on the child’s own terms. In this part I am discussing security, closeness and distance between child and pedagogue and what that relationship might mean for child development. Then I turn to how to prioritize in order to be the best pedagogue for the benefit of the child's learning. My method is to reflect and question the knowledge I acquired during my work at the preschool. Together with various theories such as related theory, relationship skills and philosopher John Dewey, I have tried to have a discussion. In the text, I use two events from my work that illustrates the problem. With these as a foundation, I am discussing various opposed concept pairs such as control – initiative and their importance to be able to explore my problem of how to interpret the curriculum and prioritize my work. I have come to the conclusion that if we are to meet all people in a democratic and equal way, we ourselves need to some extent adapt to the one we face. The quality of the meeting between teacher and child affects whether the child will dare to express its thoughts and feelings. When teachers assume the child's thoughts and development, we can easily see the curriculum and the child's learning in a holistic perspective. The child finds it easier to learn new things when we as teachers assume the child's own thoughts. The relationship between child and teacher is important for the child's learning. In order to be capable of meeting these goals teachers are required to have an emotional maturity and development and the need to develop throughout life. We educators need to be better able to discuss and raise issues about how we handle our own emotions at work and what skills we need to be able to achieve these objectives. It can help us become a "bubbly enthusiast" who likes to work as a preschool teacher's, and finds the work developing and fun.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to look into and analyze the view on sex equality in textbooks and teaching media, and teaching of a group of upper secondary school teachers, through a gender perspective. The teachers teach subjects within social- and political science. The two questions that I wanted to answer are: What views do the teachers have on sex equality in their teaching? What views do the teachers have on sex equality in the teaching media (textbooks and other teacher media) which they have access to? Since I wanted to look into the teachers own views I chose unstructured interviews as the method of gather empirical information. To interpret the transcribed texts I chose the hermeneutic view of people as intentional. I interviewed six teachers in an upper secondary school, four men and two women.

I have interpreted the interviews through a gender perspective, based on theories by Yvonne Hirdman, Maria Hedlin, Ylva Elvin-Nowak, Heléne Thomsson and Britt-Marie Thurén. Theories that have been acknowledged are gender, gender making, the male norm, structure, how to integrate sex equality, mentors and models, and feminism. Previous researches that I have focused on are thesis of Eva Gannerud, and Victoria C Wahlgren.

The conclusion of the study is that some of the teachers’ did not think that most of the textbooks they used contained an aspect of sex equality, some of them seldom used textbooks and if they wanted a sex equality aspect of the teaching they had to find supplement material on their own. In my analysis I found that the teachers felt responsibility but did not feel that they had room for increased teaching by adding sex equality to the existing lesson material. I argue that the responsibility should not lie on the individual teacher to figure out supplement for sex equality aspects on their own, but the responsibility should lay on the school system as a whole, teachers training included.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to gain additional knowledge and a greater understanding of pupils experiences of joining a special teaching group.  The study focuses on pupils with special needs and the ambition has been to get a student perspective of how they perceive their education with special support. In addition, the study is concerned with how pupils perceive their special support and whether this has any relevance to their learning, development and future goals.

This study is based on Urie Bronfenbrenners theory The ecology of human development. The theoretical perspective highlights the interaction between the pupils and the school environment, which is important for development and learning. The study is based on a qualitative research method in the form of interviews. Ten pupils from two different municipalities have been interviewed.

The results show that pupils are positive to the special form of teaching in smaller groups and consider their present situation better than their earlier experience of regular curriculum in large classes. In the special education groups the pupils are able to acquire the knowledge and skills they need in order to achieve their future goals.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the laws, govern documents and guiding principals that are available for schools and their work regarding the work against discrimination, insulting and other forms of harassments, and then to form a method for the schools to implement this work in practice.

The work to counteract discrimination, insult treatment and other forms of harassments should be done both in a short term and a long term. In this paper there is a presentation of a project, a set of lessons that was created and carried out as a trial. The project aims for conscious making among children and students in school regarding norm, deviation, discrimination and power and the fact that equal treatment is hard to achieve. The basic purpose behind the project is to offer a tool to schools and teachers so that they can decrease the possible gap between the laws and the practice of these laws by creating awareness among students and other teachers. The long term work for achieving equal treatment should be done on a political level. But at the same time one must learn to discuss the fact that there are and always will be power orders in school and all of society.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to understand how teachers in the preparatory class and regular class, in the meeting with newly arrived pupils, plan and carry out their teaching. This in order to facilitate social interaction and learning in the classroom, from an intercultural perspective. The examination was conducted through interviews with four teachers from the schools that I selected. The teachers gave their perspective on their approach to newly arrived pupils, through interviews. The result shows that the teachers have ambitions to start from the newly arrived pupils' own ideas and from their prior knowledge. They use these aspects as a starting point in the child's continued learning. You can see the tendencies of the intercultural approach in education that involves respectful responses that relate to the pupils' background, life and knowledge. The intercultural approach that largely pervades the teaching of the researched school allows the newly arrived pupils to have access to a school that accepts and respects them.

The conclusion is that when these teachers educate, they use various teaching methods and they also offer each pupil the opportunity to gain knowledge and feel socially included. Teaching strategies that benefit the newly arrived pupils and that includes the pupil both educationally and socially in the classroom, has been described by every teacher. And the result shows that each pupil has individual abilities and needs for learning. The newly arrived pupils are included in the regular classroom with the other pupils, but yet they are excluded from the regular lessons because of teacher's teaching strategies that can be seen as flawed from an intercultural perspective. This result shows that the newly arrived pupils are prevented from participating in the didactic and the social inclusion in the regular classroom with the other pupils, which also can result in them falling outside and pointed out as different.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to study five teachers' perceptions and experiences of a multicultural class. I want to find out how they relate to intercultural education and how they experience that they may apply it.

Sweden is a multicultural society. This fact is even reflected in the school and this imposes on teachers finding new ways to educate and prepare their students for the multicultural society.

I chose to carry out a qualitative survey and interviewed five teachers having contact with a multicultural class. The study also offers suggestions to future teachers who can benefit from it in terms of adopting convenient attitudes in multicultural classes with better understanding.

The outcome reached shows that the interviewed teachers try to make use of intercultural pedagogy by addressing differences between students, adapting teaching to supply for the needs of students, and also by having good contact with parents. But teachers also experience difficulties. For example, they neither receive enough training in the research area nor have sufficient contact with native teachers who are important resources in multicultural schools.

    Abstract [en]

These days, schools are obliged by the law to prepare an annual plan for the prevention of bullying and degrading treatment. The purpose of my work is to investigate the 2 schools efforts to prevent bullying and abuse and how they live up to legal standards. But I have also examined how students in school are experiencing anti-bullying work in their school. I have also examined how much funding schools put on to prevent bullying I school. In this study, I have done interviews with school principals and students to have a clear picture about the school’s anti-bullying work. The materials I have used to create this work consist of the taped interviews and analysis of the schools’ treatment plans. My approaches in this work are both qualitative and comparative. The theoretical points are mainly three types of programs (Olweus, Friends and Pikas- common concern method). In addition, I have used the social constructionist theories (eg Vygoskij) and a perspective that is called "active teaching". Both schools will be mentioned as school A and B in the exam. I have been using the material of particular authorities as National Agency for Education, School Inspectorate and Crime Prevention Council. The sources are both credible and updated.

Identitet under konstruktion: En studie om hur några gymnasieelever med syriansk kulturell bakgrund upplever sin identitet2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The key purpose of this research has been to study and understand how young people with Syriac ethnicity experience their identity, when living in two different cultures. The Syriac minority is something of a special case when it concerns establishing the identity of an individual, since syriac´s do not have an official country.

To be able to do this research an interview has been done with four young students with syriac ethnicity. The four of them is attending their final year at “gymnasiet” in Sweden which is equivalent to USA’s senior year in high school.

The multicultural school is today a fact and many immigrants attending the Swedish schools today feels misplaced when they meet the Swedish culture through fellow students and society. A clash between cultures occurs and most of the students, with non-Swedish ethnicity, live some kind of dual life. One side of this twin identity represents the ethnic identity which dominates at home and around relatives. The other side is displayed in circumstances outside of their home, which is at school and in the Swedish society in general.

This research shows the general opinion, among syriac high school students, concerning the individual identity and in which way they handle their own identity development when living within two different cultures.

One of my main questions to investigate is to find out if young students, with syriac ethnicity, develops a weak root in their ethnic identity by living outside of the syriac community.

One of my conclusions is that a student with syriac ethnicity, whom is educated in an intercultural school is rather encouraged in seeking his/her roots. Since the multicultural environment awakens a curiosity in students to seek their own ethnic identity.

"Dom kallar oss invandrare!": En undersökning som bygger på hur ungdomar av "andra generationens invandrare" identifierar sig själva.2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This investigation is aimed to analyze and gain insight into how young people of the "second generation immigrants" identify themselves in a society where they are seen as immigrants of the environment in view of the name. Also, how they identify themselves during trips to their home/country of origin are of relevance to see if they are affected in their own identification, depending on how they believe they are seen from the outside.

Through a survey, the statistics were produced, which serves as a preliminary to the larger part of the investigation where six individuals were interviewed in order to give deeper answers to the questions sought. The answers that emerged were then analyzed in relation to selected theories.

In connection with the investigation it has emerged that the young people in question often identify themselves in such a way that they think that the surroundings look at them. It is in relation to how others see them as they see themselves, which creates a distance between the surroundings and themselves. With increased knowledge on both sides, this distance between the environment and the young people in this investigation maybe could reduce.

    Abstract [en]

This study is about language learning and language development. The purpose of the survey is to investigate how current learning theory and language research reflect on teaching instructions for the teaching material in spanish, with focus on the student´s awareness and reflection.

The survey is based on a comparative textanalysis of four teaching instructions for the seventh year in the nineyear compulsory school.

The result show great variations between the teaching instructions, regarding execercises as well as instructions. A theoretical approach and an explicit connection to research is something that is constantly missing in the instructions to the teachers.
