Sweden’s protests against Islamophobia highlight the polarised views of Swedish citizens toward Muslims2015Annet (Annet (populærvitenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

Protests have taken place in Sweden in recent weeks following a number of arson attacks on mosques in the country. Jenny Berglund writes on Sweden’s Muslim community and the varying attitudes among the Swedish population toward Islam. She notes that while there is evidence of increasing numbers of hate crimes against Swedish Muslims, the picture is complex, with a strong body of public opinion existing which is supportive of religious freedom and immigration.

Teaching Islam: Islamic Religious Education at Three Muslim Schools in Sweden2009Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study concerns the formulation of Islamic religious education (IRE) at three Swedish Muslim schools which offered IRE as an extra curricular subject, one to three hours per week. The study contributes to the understanding of how IRE is formed as a confessional school subject within the framework and under the jurisdiction of the Swedish school system. The meaning of the studied IRE was construed as a way of building connectedness between pupils to both the common Islamic tradition and the Swedish society, but also highlighting and establishing connections between these two entities. The primary finding is that it is inaccurate to speak about IRE in homogeneous terms since the content varies distinctively between different schools. In addition, it has been found that the educational questions considered by the involved teachers are similar to those considered by many other types of teachers. Although classroom observations and teacher interviews showed that the general content of all three IRE classrooms included the teaching of the Quran, Islamic history through religious narratives and song, specific content variations were evident. Differences concerned approaches to the teaching of the Quran, ways of using religious narratives and genre of songs. Therefore pupils in each school received somewhat different answers to local and global questions that were raised in the classrooms, indicating somewhat different interpretations of Islam. These differences suggest that the depiction of IRE as a transmission of Islam to the younger generation is not accurate since it leads to the impression that religions are insulated entities that are capable of being passed from one generation to the next without any change taking place. Instead this study shows that the teachers translate the content of IRE according to their perception of what is vital for their pupils to know and suitable for them to comprehend since they constantly choose content and negote its meaning.

    Teaching Islam with Music2008Inngår i: Ethnography and Education, ISSN 1745-7823, Vol. 3, nr 2, s. 161-175Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We can note a varied use and attitudes to song and music in Islam. In the classroom of Sana – a primary school teacher of Islamic religious education (IRE) in a Muslim school in Sweden – music is an important but not uncontested part of IRE. The music not only supports themes discussed in the classroom but also gives variation to the education. A popular feature is when Sana shows music videos of Sami Yusuf, a young Muslim artist in the ‘Eurovision song contest’ genre, who sings Islamic pop songs. It happens that children comment and say that the pop music she plays in the classroom is haram, forbidden. Sana seldom touches upon the notion of music as forbidden or unlawful in the classroom, but nevertheless it is visible in her choices of music and the way she presents the music for the children. Outside the classroom, in discussion Sana talks about the necessity of finding Islamic role models that attract the young, instead of ‘bearded old men’ that might have interesting things to say but have neither ‘the looks nor the language’ to attract young people. Sana's use of music within IRE is discussed to seize the meanings associated with music and understand the educational choices Sana makes in relation to music. This paper is based on fieldwork that took place during 2005 and 2006.

Teaching Orthodox religious education on the border2014Inngår i: British Journal of Religious Education, ISSN 0141-6200, E-ISSN 1740-7931, Vol. 36, nr 3, s. 282-297Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In geographical areas bordering those of other states, the function of educational systems, as the means for states to foster their citizens, is challenged by ambiguities and tensions connected to intercultural experiences. In this article, I illustrate some of the findings from a project that studies religious education in four border areas around the Baltic-Barents Sea, by bringing forward the case of a school teacher who teaches Orthodox religious education (ORE), in a town in Finland close to the border with Russia. Thus, the aim is to present and discuss ORE in Finland as well as to understand what implication the border situation can have on religious education.

The Quest for Gender Equality and Empowerment among Ibrahim's Daugthers2013Inngår i: The 2nd International Khadija Conference Journal 2013, Kista: Kista Folkhögskola , 2013, Vol. 2, s. 7-14Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper concerns strategies for gender equality and empowerment based in religious texts and ideals within the so called Abrahamic religions. It begins by showing similarities between Jewish, Christian and Muslim equality strategies and based on these it suggests an Abrahamic “action plan” for equality. Some examples of how Swedish Muslims have sought gender equality and empowerment through Islam is then presented as well as a discussion on how and why some think the concept of feminism is useful to describe equality aspirations while others prefer to avoid it. Finally, the paper summarizes and discusses how knowledge about “Ibrahim’s daughters” can include, support and strengthen the position of Muslims women in the Swedish society and elsewhere.

The Study of Islamic Education: A Litmus Test on State Relations to Muslim Minorities2017Inngår i: Method and Theory in the Study of Religion: Working Papers from Hannover / [ed] Steffen Führding, Brill Academic Publishers, 2017, s. 232-258Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I argue that it is possible to understand publicly funded religious education as a litmus test for church-state-society relations and that the specific study of publicly funded Islamic education can be seen as a litmus test for the relation between various Western democracies and their Muslim minority populations.[1] I will compare and analyze state funded Islamic education in eight European countries pointing to the transformations and adaptations that Muslim communities have, on different levels, done to fit into each educational setting. The presentation shows that issues of integration, social cohesion, but also Islamophobia in each national setting affect what in the end becomes Islamic education.

Vad är etisk kompetens?: En undersökning om fenomenet etisk kompetens och skönlitteraturens roll i etikundervisningen.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate what the phenomenon of ethical competence can mean and what function reading of fiction might mean for the development of ethical competence. Furthermore, it has also discussed what conclusions one can draw from this for ethics education in the religious studies subject.

In order to answer the essays aim, the aim has been divided into two main questions and a discussion question. The main questions were: what is ethical competence? What does the reading of fiction mean for the development of ethical competence? The discussion question was: what conclusions can be drawn from the answers from question 1 and 2 in relation to ethics education in religious studies? The basic data to answer the essay questions consists of two theories on reading and which importance fiction has. The material was then examined and analyzed with a sort of qualitative text analysis.

The results of the study show two different theories about what ethical competence can mean. The theories show different, but similar, conclusions on how the reading of fiction can be seen as a source if a person wants to develop its own ethical competence. It was also discussed whether ethical competence should be seen as part of the ethics education or not. The results of this discussion was that it’s possible to argue that the development of ethical competence of students should be seen as an integral part of ethics education as ethical competence contains elements that should be seen as part of the general education mission (fostransuppdrag) that the school in Sweden has.

"...där Adam betyder människa och Eva livgivande eller kvinna": En genus- och jämställdhetsanalys om hur kvinnor och män framställs i religionerna judendom och islam i religionskunskapsböcker för mellanstadiet2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to with a gender perspective examine how often men and women are mentioned and how they are being portrayed in the religions Islam and Judaism in textbooks made for religious studies. To examine this a quantitative and a qualitative content analysis on three textbooks have been made and the following questions have been answered. How often are men and women being mentioned in the chapters about Islam and Judaism? Can the distribution be seen as even/equal between the genders? And how are women and men being portrayed in the chapters? Are they being portrayed and talked about in an equal way?

Earlier studies have shown that it’s mostly men that are being mentioned and written about in both religious history and in textbooks made for religious studies. The religious texts are being interpreted by men and also written by and for men. This makes the man a kind of prototype for the religious person while the women have been and partly still is invisible in these contexts.

The study concludes that men are being mentioned more often than women in the textbooks, which doesn’t compare with the goals set for a quantitative gender equality. It also concludes that the men are being portrayed as the active religious man while the women is being positioned beside the men, which makes the female religious practice partly invisible. To position the women beside the men is also to give them a subordinate and an outmoded role.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis was to study teachers and students in primary schools thoughts on the use of the students popular culture in religious education, and to identify similarities and differences between the interviewed and how these could be understood. The purpose was further to examine what consequences popular culture’s relation to high culture (finkultur) was given in the interviewed’s reasoning.

The thesis was divided into three major issues: What opportunities and difficulties do teachers and students regard with the use of the students popular culture in religious education? What are the differences and similarities between the respondents, and how could this be understood? And the third: What are the consequences of popular culture's relation to high culture in the reasoning?

In order to achieve the questionaries, four students in ninth grade and four religious teachers in primary school were interviewed.

The result showed that both teachers and students stressed student’s popular culture as an educational opportunity. The use of popular culture contributes a higher level of interest, commitment and happiness in religious education. The teacher provided to a greater extent the difficulties with the use of the students popular culture, mainly with their lack of time and knowledge about their student’s popular consumption. Popular culture’s relation to high culture was made visible. In the teachers interviews it’s relation was revealed in their negative attitude against the students popular culture, in for example it’s lack of good values which were not considered compatible with the school’s values. In the student’s reasoning popular cultures relation to high culture became visible with their expressed concern about the popular culture which is used in their spare time, be used in a context which they were not used to.

Jews and christians in dialogue II: identity - tolerance - understanding2001Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The last five decades have witnessed a growing interest among Protestants, Catholics and Jews to discuss issues of mutual consideration. This was enabled by the efforts of the Christian Churches to establish a dialogue towards mutual understanding, overcoming prejudice and enhancing tolerance. Ever since the Shoah, leading Christian Churches have publicly expressed their anguish over the past, and in this they have markedly changed their teachings. Patronising attitudes, contempt or acting in demeaning manners appear to be ebbing away. Inter-faith dialogue's ultimate goal is not to make the relationship ideal but to find a way to learn respect for other beliefs and traditions.

Growing insight, compassion, understanding, and knowledge are the expected results of such encounters. One of them took place in Stockholm in March 2000. It was the Second Polish-Swedish Colloquium on Jewish-Christian Dialogue. The present book contains results of this meeting. High representatives of Christian Churches (Orthodox Archbishop, Catholic Bishop, priest and Dominican monk, Lutheran Bishop) met and discussed with two Rabbis (of the Conservative tradition) and scholars coming from various academic disciplines. The book discusses examples of contacts between Christian Churches and Judaism, and between Christians and Jews. There are also articles about the history and the contemporary life of Jewish communities in Sweden, Poland and Latvia, as depicted in literary fiction or described in historical studies.

    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to investigate how students in upper secondary school perceive the subject religion A. The study is both qualitative and quantitative and I will use a survey to investigate the perception of religion among students both vocationally oriented and theory oriented. I will use questions concerning religious background and perception on the subject in relation to the curriculum but also try to investigate whether there are differences on perception between the vocational and theory orientation. The theoretical approach is mainly based on the curriculum concerning religion A but former research is also used such as books written by Sven G Hartman (2000), Ulf Sjödin (1995), Ove Larsson (1991), Elsie Davidsson (1989) and Anders Törnwall (1988). The result in the study is that students for the most part perceive the subject religion A as something positive and the background has a connection to their present perception. Family, school and society play an important role when it comes to students’ perception regarding religion A, often through media which affects and contributesto a more secular attitude. Curriculum goals and objectives cohere fairly well with the students' perception on the subject and a majority of the asked students feel that education on religion contributes to a more open, tolerant and understanding society where peopleunderstand, accept and respect each other's similarities and differences in a better way.

    Abstract [en]

While the cognitive mechanisms that incline us towards theistic belief in superhuman agents have been well documented over the past twenty-five years, unbelief has not received nearly so much attention. Recent studies however suggest that just as with theistic belief, various psychic mechanisms and processes might incline one toward unbelief, such as a propensity for analytic thinking. It has also been suggested that the connection between atheism and analytic thinking may be mediated by mentalizing constraints in autism. In this essay, we will present and evaluate a few such studies and then consider some additional ideas that we hope will contribute to a fuller understanding of possible approaches to religion and spirituality in autistic individuals.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Religious diversity is the inevitable corollary of globalization and with it comes the challenge and opportunities of greatly increased interaction with religious Others. The United States was founded on an Anglo-Saxon Protestant basis but has now become "the world’s most religiously diverse nation" according to one Harvard religious studies scholar. To deal with this development, American thinkers, mainly Christians, have devoted a good deal of scholarship in the past three to four decades construing strategies how to meet and interact with the religious Other. During the 70’s and 80’s, a typology of exclusivism, inclusivism and pluralism was developed by Christians as a response to religious diversity. Many see today that it is a necessity to find an alternative to hostility and violence and therefore dialogue is the order of the day. Since Christians are still by far the largest faith-group, and the US has economic resources, US Christians have a natural predominance in dialogue. Is that good or bad from the stand point of the minority Other? One such minority is a major sub-division of Hinduism, namely Vaishnavism. Christian-Vaishnava dialogue in the US is a new phenomenon in the past two decades and an emerging minority representative is a globalized Vaishnava organization ISKCON, popularly known as the Hare Krishna movement, which has its Western roots in the counter-culture of the 1960’s. While ISKCON struggled for legitimacy in the 70’s and ‘80’s, it has in recent decades become a major factor in Hindu and especially Vaisnava representation. How American Christians respond today to Vaishnava dialogue and how this typology arose and functions as a theoretical basis for the on-going development of Christian-Vaishnava dialogue is the subject of this action-research minor field study.

Two Religious Education Practices at Mayapura, West Bengal: Examples of Community Sustainability Development Indicators2017Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study looks into religious education practices at a traditional pilgrimage site in rural India as indicators of community sustainable development. Potentially, a role model for countless similar sites can be evinced, a contribution to the international development aim of eradication of poverty. By a religious-diversity survey at a public primary school and participant-observation in private scriptural study, secularization theory is contrasted with religious identity. The Caitanya Vaisnava heritage is a traditional form of Hinduism with a long history of peaceful Hindu and Muslim coexistence at Mayapura, West Bengal. The study shows that tangible community development and religious education are compatible if not mutually necessary. It is evident that religious education and its impact on community could be added as themes to the international discourse on Sustainable Development Indicators.

Islamic Revivalism in Contemporary Ghana2013Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In the study of Muslims in post-independence Ghana the growth and proliferation of new Islamic movements, as a by-product of Kwame Nkrumah’s foreign policy, is an issue worthy of academic attention. This foreign policy, inclined towards engaging with Africa and Muslim countries (Saudi Arabia, Iran and Libya, among others) attracted movements such as Salafism, Shi´ism and the Third Universal Theory of al-Qadhafi’s Green Book into the Ghanaian religious sphere, where the Tijaniyya already played an important role. While these new movements drew inspiration from external points of orientation, their proliferation depended on the local context. The activists of the Fayda Tijaniyya and the Salafis were successful with their agenda and approach primarily due to the competing scholarly interpretations they offered and their modernised approach to propagation. Though Shi´i revivalism in recent times has combined traditional and secular education, its influence in the broader Ghanaian religious sphere is yet to be tested. The Green Book offered a particular political dimension to the Islamic revival, and some Ghanaians were influenced by its ideas on political participation.

Dr Yunus Dumbe is a lecturer at the Department of Religious Studies in the Islamic University College, Accra. He specialises on Islam in Africa, particularly Ghana and South Africa. Between 2011 and 2013, he was a guest scholar at the Department for the Study of Religions at Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This is a thesis about The Eight Circuit Model, a modern mind map developed for the purpose of illumination and enlighenment by Dr. Timothy Leary in the 1970s. Later, authors such as Robert Anton Wilson and Antero Alli elaborated upon the idea to make it more wholesome and compatible with other ideas expressing the same basic principle. In short, it is an intellectual abstraction of the evolution of consciousness through a series of eight stages, which Leary called Circuits. By looking at the brain as an evolving bio-computer, with thoughts working as software, upgrading itself through neurological imprints, Learys created a Hero's Journey for the modern age.The thesis tries to analyze this idea, as it is presented in Robert Anton Wilsons Prometheus Rising, through the lens of the discourse category ”Western Esoterism.” A hard-to-define subject but described as ”the dialectic of the hidden and the revealed in the field of religion.”

    Abstract [en]

This case study attempts to examine how students of Religionswissenschaft at Södertörns University reflect about their philosophy of life and if their studies have some impact on their tendency to reflect. Also what aspects the students tend to reflect over will be investigated. In this study the term “philosophy of life” includes humans thought and conceptions of the world and their outlook on mankind. To answer these question an interview study with 6 students took place, and the transcriptions produced 5 categories; “The philosophy of life, to believe or not believe”, “Development of concepts”, “Outlook on mankind”, “The founding of meaning” and “Understanding and progress”. The outcome of the study is that all the students tend to reflect upon their philosophy of life, and the those aspects with most meaning for the students were about their outlook on mankind and the question about if they believed that Gods existence or not. is possible or not. Two students also tend to create new conceptions about what was meaningful for them, and four students tend to evolve their ideas and understanding of certain concepts as “religion” and “God”. It seems that study of Religionswissenschaft could have an impact on the studentss tendency to reflect on their philosophy of life.

Halv måne, heligt krig: Radikalisering av muslimska krigsfångar i Halbmondlager under första världskriget – en arkivstudie2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay tells the story of the German POW-camp Halbmondlager (eng. Crescent Moon Camp), and explores why the leadership’s goal of radicalizing the Muslim POWs was unsuccessful. Halbmondlager was located in Wünsdorf, an hour away from Berlin, and active during World War I. Inside the walls of the camp, the goal was to turn the ca. 3000 Muslim POWs – that had previously fought in the French and English armies – into Jihadists, prepared to fight in an holy war for Germany against the French-English alliance. In retrospect, the project was admittedly a failure. In the first part of the essay’s analysis, I give a description of the camp environment, put together through qualitative text analysis of archive material collected at the Political Archive at the Foreign Office in Berlin. In the second part of the analysis, I explore why the radicalization project failed, by analyzing the camp and its environment through modern relational radicalization theory, and the leadership’s thoughts on Islam. My conclusion is that the relational radicalization theory exposes more than one reason as to why the POWs did not become radicalized, but that it is also necessary to keep the then dominant thoughts of Islam as a religion connected to war in mind to get a full picture of why the project failed.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The previous research in the field of new religious movements has mostly focused on the spectacular parts where phenomena such as “brainwashing” and the “charismatic leader” have attracted both media and the scientific studies of religion. Professor Liselotte Frisks has done several enquiries about sects and new religious movements in Sweden. One of her main conclusions is that the relation between these new religious movements and the rest of society has changed; a relation that used to be characterized by conflicts and tension is now becoming more open as both parts are changing.

This study does not focus on the spectacular parts. Instead I have studied something more common and general. I have studied how members from new religious movements are apprehending subjects as school and education. I have chosen two well-known religious movements: the church of Scientology and the Family Federation of World Peace and Unification. My comprehensive purpose is to analyze the members' opinions and views, to see whether their ideas are on terms with what the majority says or if it differs from the norm.

My conclusion is that the members of the Church of Scientology criticize the Swedish school system. They find it too theoretical and believe that there is not enough focus on aspects such as word-understanding. The Church of Scientology has their own pedagogy which is based on word-understanding. The members of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification shared the opinion of the majority to a larger extent, as they did not prescribe such harsh critics about the school. However, they do believe that the school has to take a huge responsibility raising the students since many young people of today come from broken families. Strong families are one of the corner pillars of this movement.

Muslimska baddräkter: - En effekt av globaliseringen2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Satanism. The mere word conjures up all sorts of strange images: human sacrifice, sexual orgies and shadowy conspiracies. Unsurprisingly, as any scholar working on the topic will tell you, the reality of this phenomenon is more prosaic than what is commonly imagined. Certain aspects of it, which we will consider at the end of the chapter, are however almost as bizarre and startling as anything that can be imagined by paranoid Pentecostals or authors of lurid pulp horror. Between here and that point of extreme expressions, however, we first need to visit raucous English rakes, Romantic poets, anarchists, Decadents, a Danish dairy salesman, a supposed lion tamer and lover to Marilyn Monroe, a PSYOPS officer, and other colorful characters.
