Europeanisation and its Limits: The Case of Sweden1999In: Journal of International Relations and Development, ISSN 1408-6980, E-ISSN 1581-1980, Vol. 2, no 3, p. 169-186Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyses the Europeanisation of Sweden and combines theoretical and empirical aims by seeking to draw out wider implications from this particular case with regard to the impact and limits of Europeanisation. An analytical framework is established in which the terms of Europeanisation and the domestic politics approach are defined and analysed. A distinction is made between dimensions of Europeanisation. The article also calls for a multidisciplinary approach to the study of Europeanisation to understand its multifaceted nature. It is shown that Sweden has in many ways been affected by processes of Europeanisation, but also that there are certain limits to this development. Public opinion and intra-party factionalism, endogenous factors, impose constraints on the freedom of action of policymakers. In conclusion, it is suggested that a cognitive and spatial separation and cultural differences are the most important limits to the further Europeanisation of Sweden.

Nordiskt partisamarbete och dess inflytande på europeisk sysselsättningspolitik1998In: Nordisk Tidskrift för vetenskap, konst och industri, ISSN 0029-1501, Vol. 74, no 2, p. 147-155Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Partisan responses to Europe:: comparing Finnish and Swedish political parties2001In: European Journal of Political Research, ISSN 0304-4130, E-ISSN 1475-6765, Vol. 39, no 2, p. 225-249Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyzes party responses to European integration in Finland andSweden. We argue that such responses are shaped by seven explanatory factors: basic ideology, public opinion, factionalism, leadership influence, party competition, transnational links, and the development of integration. Each factor can lead to a positive or a negative evaluation of the European Union. In the empirical analysis, the sample includes all parties represented in the respective national parliaments, and the research material consists of party documents, parliamentary votes, statements by leading party figures, public opinion surveys, direct observation and interviews. Party competition and leadership influence are the strongest factors in the Finnish case, while public opinion and factionalism are the strongest factors in Sweden. Issue avoidance combined with the secondary importance of the EU in party politics explain why parties have been relatively successful in containing internal factionalism and discord, especially in Finland

A case of a surplus majority government: The Finnish rainbow coalition2002In: Scandinavian Political Studies, ISSN 0080-6757, E-ISSN 1467-9477, Vol. 25, no 1, p. 57-83Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Surplus majority government is the most frequent type of cabinet in postwar Finland. The case study investigates the explicative power of two groups of theories of surplus majority government on the Finnish rainbow coalition formed in 1995. Firstly, theories that model surplus size as instrumental for government capability, i.e. surplus size as critical to decision-making capability, Secondly, theories that model the surplus size as a possibility or where the size is the result of the expected utility of government being higher than that of opposition for the political parties in terms of goal realisation. The main materials studied are internal party documentation and interviews with key people. The result of the study is that parties' strategic features best explain the surplus size of the rainbow coalition, since participation in government offers greater opportunities for the realisation of party goals, such as policy, votes and future office.

Political representation and participation in transitional democracies: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania2003Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This volume describes the transformation of the three Baltic States to liberal democracies, and discusses to what extent the new institutions that have come into existence enjoy popular support. It is an empirical study, based on a survey conducted in 1999, to test hypotheses derived from representation and participation theories. Each chapter contains a discussion of the theoretical implications found in the Baltic context. The three Baltic societies are on the verge of a transition towards a more consolidated and stable system in which the rule of law is widely accepted as a democratic principle. However, there are nostalgic sentiments among those who were deeply involved in the Soviet system, and among those who have been disadvantaged by the new system.

Enriching Swedish women's work environment: The case of social enterprises in day care2000In: Economic and Industrial Democracy, ISSN 0143-831X, E-ISSN 1461-7099, Vol. 21, no 1, p. 39-70Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article addresses the dramatic increase of work-related demands and the deterioration of the psychosocial work environment for women employed in the public service sector in Sweden during the 1990s and the potential contribution of social enterprises to enriching women's work environment. The empirical part of the study of the staff of 57 day care centres, chosen throughout Sweden, compares the three main types of social enterprises providing day care services, namely parent cooperatives, voluntary organizations and worker cooperatives, with each other and contrasts them, in a retrospective study, with similar municipal services. The staff study shows that social enterprises provide good jobs in the sense of being both demanding and providing decision latitude for the employees. Women gain more control over their jobs through greater participation and influence in the decision-making processes of social enterprises. This both enriches their work life and results in a more engaged staff and better quality services.

Förnuftets entoniga röst: Om EU-kampanjens demokratiska rum och medborgarskapets villkor2003Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Vem satte dagordningen inför EU-omröstningen 1994? Hur mobiliserades politiskt stöd, hur finansierades mobiliseringen?
