    Abstract [en]

    This article investigates Dewey’s view of critical thinking as it appears in his How We Think. There, he distinguishes some key steps in the thinking process. It begins with a perceived difficulty, which we try to locate and propose a possible solution to, after which we examine and test the hypothesis, first in theory and then in practice, i.e. in an experimental corroboration. This conception of the thinking process follows a generalized, typical scientific working method. At the same time, however, Dewey tries to affirm and do justice to the relative, the particular and the individual, an endeavour that can be associated with the hermeneutic tradition. It is also in accordance with that tradition, as well as with Aristotle’s conception of phronesis, that Dewey stresses the importance of good judgement. In our schools, he maintains, we should try to promote good judgement, as well as critical thinking, on the part of students.

    Fler människor än någonsin studerar idag vidare på eftergymnasial nivå, och den utbildning som ges – och som studenterna själva efterfrågar – motiveras allt oftare i ekonomiska termer, som ett medel för individuella karriärer och nationell ekonomisk tillväxt. Det är i hög grad som en reaktion mot den utvecklingen som de senaste årens nyväckta intresse för bildningsfrågor kan ses.

    Är bildning fortfarande ett meningsfullt och användbart begrepp? Går det i massutbildningens tidevarv att utforma högre utbildningar som också öppnar upp för studenternas egna bildningsprocesser?     I denna bok undersöker lärare vid Södertörns högskola tradition och praxis inom undervisningen i tio ämnen: arkeologi, filosofi, företagsekonomi, genusvetenskap, geografi, historia, idéhistoria, journalistik, medie- och kommunikationsvetenskap samt musikutbildning. Vissa av bidragsgivarna har valt att göra en bred översikt av det egna ämnets pedagogiska utveckling medan andra har fördjupat sig i ett visst problem. Några har intervjuat sina kolleger, andra redogör för pedagogiska utvecklingsprojekt och åter andra tar avstamp i egna reflektioner och tidigare litteratur på området. Gemensamt är att samtliga utgår från ett historiskt perspektiv och att tyngdpunkten ligger på didaktiska frågor om den konkreta undervisningens innehåll och utformning.

    Sammantaget ger de tolv bidragen en fördjupad förståelse av varför högskolepedagogiken idag ser ut som den gör samtidigt som det öppnar upp för alternativa pedagogiska förhållningssätt och praktiker. Genom att studera det som har varit får vi perspektiv på det som är och i bästa fall också redskap för att tänka nya tankar om hur det skulle kunna vara i stället.

    Abstract [en]

    The thesis analyses the interaction between various interests in Swedish society when the existing apprenticeship system for the journalism profession was to be replaced by a formal journalism education programme. The press organisations had a difficult time agreeing on a programme, and the issue was discussed for over 50 years. The profession was seen as a talent, an aptitude that some people had, and there was opposition to formal education. The first part analyses discussions about journalism education in a post-war context, both in Sweden and internationally. Part two considers extensive investigatory processes in Sweden, in which the structure of journalism programmes was arrived at through negotiations. The third part studies the development of and discussions about the newly founded national journalism schools. The thesis demonstrates that journalism education was often presented as a solution to other perceived problems than the press needing more professionally trained labour. Journalism education was proposed as a solution to problems associated with commercialisation, sensational journalism, politicised journalism and war propaganda. The question of influencing the shaping of opinion both in Sweden and internationally was linked to journalism education to the extent that education was seen as a method of affecting the way the "free" press worked. For the same reason, the education of journalists was sometimes considered dangerous, that journalism students were streamlined in a separate education programme based on homogeneous values, which could be a threat to the freedom of expression.Using Bourdieu, the difficult relationship between the journalistic field and the academic field on education is interpreted as a struggle between two forms of capital over which kind of knowledge is to be valued. On a higher level, the struggle between academe and the press was formulated as a battle of symbolic royalty over what values were to be regarded as true in public discourse.
