    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Martha Nussbaum: Ancient Philosophy, Civic Education and Liberal Humanism2019Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

From texts first published in 1972 up to her most recent work, this volume consists of seven articles that discuss Martha Nussbaum’s work focusing on her treatments of ancient philosophy, civic education and liberal humanism. The volume provides a general overview of these three aspects of Nussbaum’s philosophy and raises some concerns and critical questions about specific parts of her work. In addition, the volume is thematically organized; some articles deal with Nussbaum’s readings and uses of ancient philosophers—specifically, Heraclitus, Plato and Aristotle, respectively—while the others examine her views on liberal education, cosmopolitanism, human rights and aging.

As one of our time’s most influential philosophers, Martha Nussbaum displays the relevance of philosophy for contemporary political and ethical concerns. Engaging with her philosophical work brings to light some of the most pressing questions of our time.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish publishing company En bok för alla (which translates as “A book for everyone”) was established in 1976 following a decision in the Swedish parliament granting the right of the government to sign a cooperative agreement with the non-profit foundation Litteraturfrämjandet. Using state funds, the publishing company would publish books of high literary value to be sold at low prices over a three-year period. The purpose of this was to combat the kind of literature that was sold at supermarkets and corner shops, and which was deemed being of low literary value, but also to reach the wider public and attract non-readers.

In this study I argue that the establishment of En bok för alla must be viewed as an expression of Swedish cultural policy which took form in the early years of the 1970s. Two years prior to En bok för alla being established the Swedish parliament passed the first cultural policy act of Sweden, thus laying the groundwork for cultural policy to come. In this act, it is stated that aim of Swedish cultural policy was to contribute to a better social environment and to work for the furtherance of equality. This would be achieved by, among other things, minimizing the negative effects of commercial interests in the cultural sphere and decentralizing the production and distribution of culture.

During the 1960s and 1970s, books had become increasingly expensive and books of higher literary quality were both more difficult and more expensive than their lower quality counterparts. I argue that many looked at this as a shortcoming on the part of the above mentioned commercial interests, who valued money more than literature. I will also show how some these ambitions, bold though they may have been, in the end fell short of accomplishing the goal of En bok för alla. Though they did succeed in publishing books at low costs, the question of whether they were of high literary quality or not I can’t say, they did not seem to reach the wider audience they had hoped to attract.

Following the Swedish election of 2006 and the subsequent change of government, the state funds for En bok för alla were withdrawn in 2007. The argument given for this was that the book market had changed since 1976. This was of course true, but in my opinion the need for these high-quality dime-store books is perhaps even more acute today than ever before. In a time when smartphones, television and computers all compete for our attention, I believe that it is becoming an increasingly important task for our society to secure the role of books and reading in the world of media.

    Abstract [en]

In this thesis I argue that the concept of actualization is a useful point of entry for understanding what the German philosopher Axel Honneth does in regard to the concept of ethical life [Sittlichkeit] from Hegel’s Philosophy of Right. Actualization can be understood as an a historical contextualization, which in this case entails using Hegel’s concept of ethical life to cast light on contemporary political and philosophical issues. Using a notion of social freedom, where individual freedom is understood in such a manner where it only can be realized in cooperation with others, Honneth actualizes ethical life as a society where institutions contain the norms and customs that make possible the realization of social freedom. With this understanding of ethical life Honneth uses his actualization for the purpose of critiquing the social order from a more sound and immanent perspective than those critiques based on abstract notions of right or morality. His actualization makes it possible to take the Hegelian notion of ethical life and turn it into a tool for critiquing current institution for not realizing the norms and customs that they immanently should. He can argue for a moral notion of the market where exchanges must be so that everyone benefits, and that strong trade unions and consumer cooperatives are necessary for this to be the case. Regarding the political situation his actualized notion of ethical life isused to expand upon the theory of deliberative democracy strengthening it through showing that social freedom is a requirement for it and that it cannot be realized only in the political sphere and must be realized throughout the entire ethical society. He thus compliments the theory of deliberative democracy with a broader notion including both the family and the market as necessary components. Concluding I argue that Honneth’s actualizations shows that it’s possible and a worthwhile endeavour to return to Hegel’s political philosophy and the notion of ethical life

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to show how the construction of the household as a political entity was undertaken by the Swedish state during the first half of the 1900. The household, mainly perceived as an apolitical subject, is shown to be articulated in response to the problems and ideals as formulated by the ruling body at the time.

The thesis examines the period of 1911-1951, generally considered a time of great social upheaval in Sweden. The countries transition from a poor agrarian society to one of the richest countries in the world, drastically changed the perception of what a household was, and what it needed to be. By studying the material produced by Socialstyrelsen between 1913-1951 to examine the budget of different social classes, the thesis finds that the household has been formulated in different ways by the state. In the early years of the 20:th century, the household was articulated as” the frugal household” by the newly formed social authority. It was conceived as a unit for fulfilling the needs of its consistent members.

The thesis shows the articulation of this particular idea of the household was an answer to the social problems formulated by the state of the time. The construction of” the frugal household” did not only formulate the thrifty housekeeping ideals of the time, but also became a way to educate the lower classes, whose economic troubles where seen mostly as a lack of self-restraint and good book keeping.

As the perceived challenges to the state changed, so too did the use of the household. As the economy expanded ever further down the path of the consumption-driven welfare state, so too did the states idea of what a household was. This thesis shows how the latter use of the household concept is articulated as a unit for consumption. The frugal ideal has grown into a celebrated desire to improve one’s situation through consumption. Furthermore, both these constructions of the household serve to reproduce the core values of the state, as well as the core population of the state.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the role and perceived legitimacy of the economic expert and how the positons of economic experts has evolved during the 20th century, as seen through the lens of two debates.

Both of the debates take place around a great economic crisis in Sweden. The first, in the early 1930’s is held while the big economic upheaval of that time still rages. The second, in 1995, is held just after the so called 90’s-crisis has subdued. The aim of the theis is to see how the economic experts at the time defends and expands their authority.

The results of the theisis finds that in both cases the economic expert links the economic policies of the time before the most recent crisis will be presented as inherently linked to the problem. The new policy, which is easy to establish in the light of the old one, works as a way for the economic expert to defend the authority of the profession.

The study also finds that while the legatimacy of the economic expert during the 1930s is based on an intergration with politics, while the legatimicy for the economic expert during the 1990s stems instead from a distancing from politicans and the political sphere in general.

St Adalbertus Domesticus. Patterns Of Missioning and Episcopal Power in Poland and Scandinavia in the Eleventh to Thirteenth Centuries2019In: Acta Poloniae Historica, ISSN 0001-6829, no 119, p. 209-260Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores the ways episcopal milieus on the north-eastern peripheries of Europe created and renewed their identities and symbols of episcopal authority by domesticating their immigrant saints during the high Middle Ages. By comparing the examples of holy bishops arriving to Poland and Sweden (St Adalbert, St Sigfrid, St Henry), it studies the episcopal mythopoesis, that is, the creation of foundational myths and mythologies as well as their adaptation to specific local needs and changing historical circumstances. The article further probes to what extent these mythopoetic efforts were original or imitative in comparison to the Western European episcopal centres and other peripheries. How similarly or differently did the bishops in the "old" and "young" Europe respond to the question: What beginnings do we need today? And what role did the appropriation, commodification, and domestication of holy bishops' images and body parts play in building the institutional identities of bishoprics?

En "medborgerlig" patientrörelse: Samhällssyn och maktkritik hos den svenska THX-rörelsen under 1970-talets andra hälft2018In: Scandia, ISSN 0036-5483, Vol. 84, no 1, p. 36-60Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since the 1990s, historians of medicine have pointed to a change in the status and self-image of patients in the West. Patients, it is claimed, have gone from being passively dependent on medicine to active consumers of health care. However, this narrative does not consider the fact that Western countries differ a great deal in terms of access to health care, access to alternative treatments and the role and status assigned to formal expertise in society at large. This study aims to contribute to a deeper and more historically nuanced understanding of the transformation of the patient into a consumer. Through an analysis of the Swedish THX movement - a patient movement trying to achieve legal access to, and formal approval of, the controversial anti-cancer drug THX in the 1970s - the study shows how the agenda and demands of the THX patients mirrored the specific Swedish settings in which they were articulated. THX patients did not wish to be regarded as consumers or clients. On the contrary, their arguments were firmly rooted in a collective identity as "the people" who expected the state and politicians to meet their needs. They emphasized their collective experience as evidence of the efficiency of THX and pointed to the popularity of THX treatment, thereby rejecting the results of several scientific trials initiated by the medical authorities. Doing so, THX patients made use of the culturally resonant frame of collectivity in Sweden at the time, as well as of a widespread belief that the medical authorities were corrupt and insensitive to the needs of ordinary people.
