Preservation and reusability of Instagram content: with examples from the public sector of Sweden2018In: Imatge i Recerca : Jornades Antoni Varés (15es : 2018 : Girona), Girona, 2018Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Many public sector organizations today use social media to communicate with the citizens. In Sweden, where government information is strictly regulated there have been several discussions regarding these organizations use of social media as the content is considered governmental information. In this paper I will analyze two city archives (Stockholm City Archive and The Regional Archives for Gothenburg and Region Västra Götaland) instructions regarding their use of social media in general and the application Instagram particulary. These instructions will be analyzed through a theoretical framework containing provenance, preservation and reusability. Instagram is particularly interesting because the main communication is done through pictures which can be hard to preserve, hard to record the provenance regarding, but that people often are eager to reuse. In the end two models for a practical preservation of Instagram content will be presented. Two models of preservation that take provenance and reusability in account.

In Sweden all public organizations such as municipalities and government agencies have to treat their information flow carefully. Every document that is created or received by a public organization is perceived as an official document (“Allmän handling”). Such document must be released to the public on demand if the information in it is not subject to any secrecy regulations. In the legislation the definition of a document is very broad – it could be any type of information that a public organization holds. Automatically generated logfiles, maps, pictures, virtually anything that is perceived as information can be an official document. These types information is also supposed to be preserved in an archive, if there not is a regulation from the National archives or other qualified agency that states otherwise. This makes the discussion regarding preserving social media relevant.

Instagram provides a possibility to download all posted content from your user account. This has been a feature in the Instagram Application since April 2018. The result is a zip-file with a series of files in JSON-format. These files contains all likes, messages, captions et cetera that has been generated through the account. The zipped content also contains all pictures and videos the account has posted, and all direct messages (pictures or videos) that the account has had sent to it. There are also independent scraping tools that let you download content from accounts that you don’t are the owner off. These types of scraping tools are off less interest in this study, but could be useful for public organizations if they collect content from other users or in cases were a public organization has lost control over an account. There is no research yet that mentions Instagram, but scraping through API, application programming interface, the programming interface that social media suppliers offers for professional users, have been recommended as an archiving tool for Twitter.

The theoretical foundation of this study is the concept of provenance as it is used within the discipline of Archival Science. The goal is to discuss preservation solutions that will enable us to preserve reusable content with its provenance intact. The reason to search for such solutions is to cater both to contemporary and future users of the preserved content. Provenance, or respect des fonds, is a key concept in archival theory. There are multiple aspects of provenance but one is that what we call an archive is the natural accumulation of an organization. It is not – as in the case with a library – a collection of information, collected by the organization. It is the administrative accumulation of an organization, the mail sent to it and the protocol on which its representatives have written their decisions. To keep the provenance is to let the accumulated administrative material in an order close to its original order. Material from different organizations should not be mixed when they reach an archival institution, they should be kept sorted in relation to their original accumulator. Reusability and preservation are two other criteria that are used beside provenance.

The two largest cities in Sweden, Stockholm and Gothenburg are the only ones that seem to have any instruction for archiving Instagram content. These instructions, which differs in some ways have been analyzed with the concepts of provenance, reusability and preservation. In relation to this analysis, two different methods for archiving Instagram content has been produced. Planned content management – a method in which reusability and the preservation of easily reusable archives are in focus. Content download – a method in which the preservation of the content is done in way which preserves the social media provenance.

The study concludes that when we choose a method we must know it’s limitations. We must also know what kind of end result we want. Then we must let these two aspects intermingle when until we find a solution that is both possible for the organization and gives us a preferable end result. In the end, if we strive for provenance we might lose some of the contents reusability. And if we strive for reusability we might lose some of the contents provenance. If we want both the archive will be considerably larger and there will be more work accumulated in the end product.

    Scientific contribution

The main scientific contribution of this study is the discussion regarding different methods of preservation of Instagram content. A discussion that is possible to apply to other social media application. To this a discussion regarding social media and provenance is added. Both these contributions could be a stepping stone for further discussion regarding how to treat social media from an archival science perspective.

The Digital Leap and the Quest for Autonomy: Inspecting the International Council on Archives Code of Ethics in a twenty year retrospect2017In: Information and knowledge for Competitiveness: Proceeding of DLIS 2017 International Conference : Hosted by the Department of Library and Information Studies (DLIS) : 15th-17th March 2017 : At the University of Botswana, Gaborone / [ed] Nathan Mnjama & Priti Jain, Gaborone: University of Botswana , 2017, p. 169-183Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The International Council on Archives Code of Ethics was presented in 1996. A great deal has happened in the world and in the discipline of Archival Science since. This article examines and analyses the Code of Ethics with the help of Codes of ethics from other disciplines, the debate surrounding profession ethics and the changes in the world of archives. Three areas are found where improvement in the Code would be preferable. The archivist should be trying to gain a higher autonomy in relation to other professions like economist and lawyers. Inspired by how autonomy is formulated in the pharmacists Code of Ethics. Education should be put in focus when today, at least in the western world, most people that work as archivists generally have a relatively high education. Also, the statements in the Code regarding confidentiality might have to be revisited and discussed again, because of the great changes in the possibility to spread and communicate information after the great increase in digitalization since 1996. Today, the internet as an extra layer of information makes it possible to search and connect personal information with information in archives. We also have the possibility to spread information very fast using smart phones etcetera. This has to be regarded as a change in the possibility to remain confidential.

Jain, N.M Mnjama, O. Oladokun, K. H Moahi, Gabarone: University of Botswana , 2019, p. 413-431Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In June 2017 the Nordic National Socialist organization ”Nordic Resistance Movement” discovered that their web-shop, “Nordfront”, had been hacked and the customer data leaked on the Internet.

Later they admitted publicly to being hacked and soon there after the actual data base was released by the perpetrators. Online discussions and media reports followed. Politicians who had ordered merchandise from the web-shop had to resign and musicians who had done the same had their concerts canceled. Data hacking led to a political and cultural scandal in Sweden with consequences for those involved. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reactions in online forums from persons in the political sphere that was affected by the leak. How do commentators react when information that connects a person to a controversial, and in this case anti-democratic and racist, political organization, is spread on the Internet? How is the quality of the information valued from an information security perspective? How can the database-leak be analyzed with help from models of information security? The study will be done using a case study method, with the main focus towards the supporters of the Nordic Resistance Movement.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how travel companies have adapted to a digital society and how they use the Internet as a marketing channel.

Problem: How have current travel companies adapted to the development of the Internet and how do they use Internet as a marketing channel? Are there any differences in the marketing strategies of different types of travel companies and does the clientele have any impact on the selected marketing method?

Method:  This study has been formed by a qualitative approach. Interviews have been conducted with employees at different travel companies across Sweden. The qualitative approach has been chosen to create a deeper understanding and give a broader knowledge to our study.

Conclusion: Companies today use the Internet as one of their primary marketing channels, these are mainly websites and social media. The companies agree that aligning themselves after a digital society and new innovations is key to compete in the market. Depending on the clientele and target audience the companies’ marketing strategies may differ, the results show that there is a clear difference between niche and non-niche travel companies.

Persuasiva spel: Ett medium med spännande möjligheter: Procedurell retorik i två svenska opinionsbildande datorspel2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay is about the principles and rules that control persuasive computer games. The term persuasive games mean computer games, video games and other similar artifacts that are produced to shape opinion. The rhetorical scholar Ian Bogost at Georgia Tech claims that this kind of games mainly get their persuasive power by using procedural rhetoric and that games as a medium gives special conditions for procedurality.  By procedural rhetoric Bogost means an argumentation that is based on rules and choices, as opposed to texts, movies and images. (Bogost 2007). Bogost describes these procedures as quite specific for games and claims that they differ qualitatively from “ordinary” rhetorical arguments even if they just as other arguments work by establishing enthymems. However when I in my preliminary study tried this hypothesis, I seemed to distinguish several similarities with argumentation strategies used in political or juridical debate, such as Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca´s associative argumentation techniques. In this essay I examine if and how Perelman and Olbrechs-Tytecas associative argumentation techniques can be used to describe (and understand?) rulebased rhetorical procedures in persuasive games. This analysis is carried out on two recent Swedish persuasive games and proves the hypothesis fruitful. This result also points to the possibility to view rules as something that control all forms of argumentation. Despite this result, the investigation doesn´t contradict the presumption that computer games in many ways, have specific possibilities, beyond procedural rhetoric, such as the opportunity for interaction, receiver adaptation, and the capacity to process big amounts of data.

    Abstract [en]

Aristotle defined man as a political animal. By that, he ment that the human being is a social animal who uses his communicative and rhetorical skills when negotiating with his fellow humans over issues they share and have in common. Politics, in Athens, was to take common issues seriously. Humans – at least those who could call themselves citizens – were political, and therefore also rhetorical animals. Today, in our western societies, Aristotle’s statement appears almost absurd; politics, in modern western societies, is generally something politicians do while ordinary people are merely observing. Rhetoricians of today – i.e. ”experts on rhetoric” – comment on how politicians speak, how they move, and how they dress. Both politics and rhetoric of today is therefore different from politics and rhetoric of the time when Aristotle lived.

In this essay I claim that we, in order to avoid an undeserved reduction of the art of rhetoric and to gain important knowledge about ourselves as humans in our time, have to seriously reconsider the political potential of the art. Such a reconsideration demands a revaluation of both rhetoric and politics. Rhetoric on the one hand, must be understood in a broader sense (than in the general and public notion of the term) which includes language, behaviour, buildings, institutions etcetera in the sense making processes. For this revaluation I turn mainly to Mats Rosengren whose works are at the front edge within this research field. Politics on the other hand, must be understood as an activity through which we construct ourselves as humans as well as our shared world. For this analysis I turn mainly to Hannah Arendt and Cornelius Castoriadis whose works are critiques of our modern societies.

My aim is, by investigating these matters, to propose an understanding of civic competence to act politically that is consistent with the reconsideration mentioned above. One of my presumptions is that the political activity of the citizen can be understood as negotiations within, with and of doxa. Therefore, I investigate doxa and doxa negotiation using Ruth Amossy’s, Mats Rosengren’s and Maria Wolrath Söderberg’s theoretical perspectives. My conclusion is that political action is possible in the area where rhetoric and politics meet and that the ability to act as a citizen in a true democratic society involves a number of qualities among which an ethical quality, namely frónēsis, may be the most important, but also the most problematic.

Kärlek eller bara en fling?: En retorisk komparativ analys av Match och Victoria Milans TV-reklamfilmer2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to highlight the two firms Match and Victoria Milan's television commercials. The primary purpose is to explore the rhetorical strategies Match and Victoria Milan use in the commercials to attract new paying members to the sites. Each advertisement is examined through rhetorical analysis. The rhetorical theories used are the triad of ethos, pathos, logos and the semiotic aspects of denotation and connotation. In my work I also analyze video production technology to illuminate the camera angles. With hermeneutics as a scientific approach I will interpret the commercials by using the hermeneutic circle approach. The secondary objective of this work is to compare the similarities and differences between the commercials. The questions I ask are 1) the similarities and differences in the commercials and 2) how different gender patterns differ between the commercials. To visualize the structures that exist, I will use structuralist theory. Victoria Milan has until today only produced one television commercial that is analyzed. Match, however, produced several commercials and I have therefore chosen to examine the most recent of these commercials. The analysis shows that both advertising films strength and persuasive power lies in that they combine the rational and emotional Apelles – the intended recipient both recognize themselves in the commercials and that the commercials contain arguments. The Promotional Films are based on structuralist binary opposites that form the basis of how man and woman's role in advertising films are produced / perceived differently. In the Match commercial the man is in control. In the Victoria Milan commercial the woman is the one who is active. One conclusion is that two sub-conscious issues are raised by the recipient, "it can become areality" (Match), and "it could be better" (Victoria Milan). This emotional influence instilles hope in the subconscious of the intended target groups. The hope they feel is a strong rhetorical approach that both companies use. Finding an excuse for bad behavior, however, is Victoria Milan's main rhetorical strategy. Keywords: triad of ethos, pathos, logos, visual rhetoric, television commercials, binary opposition, dating, internet, Barthes, Lévi-Strauss

Unesco, Malraux och ombildningens museum: Estetik och kosmopolitik i efterkrigstid2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 15 points / 22,5 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

An inquiry into the post-war European aesthetic and political landscape should take the international organization Unesco’s colour reproductions and travelling exhibitions of paintings into consideration. In these, the organization implements André Malraux’ idea of the “imaginary museum” as a framework for a future cosmopolitical, aesthetic (and utopian) community. During the late 1940’s, the Swedish government also discusses the need for raising an “aesthetic awareness” amongst their citizens as a consequence to a poor knowledge in the fine arts. In short, there is a poor developed sensibility amongst the Swedish people. An aesthetic (re)shaping has political consequences since it concerns the sensibility of the political subject and his or hers ability to partake in a political order. The issue at hand is how these re-shapings are constituted and further developed, i.e. how these create new ways of sensing and new forms for the political subject. Or, in the stance of Unesco: the cosmopolitical subject.

The international organization Unesco has its roots in the early 20th century. The making of the organization – both its birth and bureaucratic constitution – coincides with an emergent information society. Radio, colour-photography, television and film all defy boundaries in some way. These media re-organized time, space and perception, changing the awareness of the other. These media linked the world together in the following logic: same time, but different place. The work that Unesco undertook came to revolve around these media and this logic, especially since Unesco furthered Malraux’s imaginary museum. Unesco’s constitution describes the origins of conflict as residing in man’s mind and promotes the free flow of ideas by word and image. New media would act in an enlightening way and play a significant role in making the organizations dream of a global unity come true. This thesis describes art’s function in Unesco’s attempt to bring this utopia to life.

Vårdkris i skatteparadis: En ideologikritisk analys av vårdskandalen hösten 20112012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The intention of this essay is to examine how the political commentators from three different kinds of media (evening, morning, public service) portray the party leaders after the election of 2018 in Sweden. My first specific research task is to analyze how the commentators portray the party leaders according to Kenneth Burke´s pentadic analysis. Hereafter, I aim to identify the intended audience that the commentator could have in mind. For this question it is important to analyze how they use language as a way to depict the political reality. The theoretical framework for this essay is based on Burke´s dramatism, terministic screens and identification, and Edwin Black´s second persona. The result shows that two of the commentators have fairly the same way to present the narrative of the dramatic pentad. They frequently highlight the purpose of the way the party leaders handle the situation. The other commentator, from the evening paper, strongly emphazises the lack of action from the politicians after the election. All commentators use a language that mostly depicts the politics as a game or strategy – but the tone differ from accusatory to understanding towards the party leaders. The analysis shows that the overall intended audience probably is quite politically interested, but from different political parties and ideologies.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to examine how the swedish municipality of Botkyrka hasendeavoured to meet the legal obligations prescribed by the General Data ProtectionRegulation (GDPR) and what impact this legislation is expected to have on the informationmanagement-structures currently in use within the municipality itself. Research has beenperformed through a case study consisting of semi-structured interviews. The study showsthat several important measures has been taken in order to meet the demands set by theregulation, but that the absence of a conclusive swedish legislation on the matter is keepingthe municipality from knowing what exactly is expected of them.

Situation majtal: en komparativ analys av tre socialdemokratiska ledares första maj-tal från 1954, 1978 och 20112011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Based on the concept of rhetorical situation, the purpose of this study is to compare and describe the three Socialist leader's May Day speech from the years 1954, 1978 and 2011. The results of the analysis showed that there is a big difference in how the leaders chooses to appeal to the rhetorical audience. Erlander, 1954, never appealed directly to his audience which Palme, 1978, did both initially as repeatedly throughout his speech. Juholt, 2011, has a personal and frequent appeal which is repeated throughout his speech, which is interpreted as a sign of the intimization of the public language. It proved difficult to discuss the Socialist rhetoric as one unified form. The rhetoric realm is influenced by too many external factors, such as the media, which makes it impossible to speak of it as one. The analysis revealed that the language of the 1th may-speeches is characterized by the people who use it. It is inevitable that the speaker puts his utmost emphasis, in both language and speeches. It would require a larger and more comprehensive analysis to allow any conclusions about a social-democratic language. Keywords: Rhetorical situation, genre, ethos-logos-pathos, 1th May, the Swedish Social Democratic Party, Tage Erlander, Olof Palme, Håkan Juholt
