"Absolut det svåraste jobb jag någonsin haft": En kvalitativ studie om behandlares upplevelser av mötet med män som utövar våld i nära relationer2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Avsaknadens erfarenheter: En studie om barnfamiljers upplevelser av ekonomisk utsatthet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Bullying is a serious social problem that has increased among Swedish adolescents. Bullying victimization has a negative impact on adolescents life satisfaction and it’s therefore important to gain knowledge about factors that can have a positive impact on this relationship. The aim of this study was to investigate to what extent socio-emotional support from family, teachers and friends have a positive impact on experienced life satisfaction among adolescents who are victims of bullying in Sweden. A logistic regression analysis was used based on data from “Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) 2013/14” where 365 adolescents who are victims of bullying were analyzed. The result showed that socio-emotional support from family had a positive impact on the experienced life satisfaction among Swedish adolescents who are victims of bullying. The socio-emotional support from teachers and friends did not have a significant impact. These findings highlight how family is a resource that helps adolescents who are victims of bullying to cope with the negative effects that bullying has on life satisfaction. The present study therefore contributes knowledge on how socio-emotional support from the family could be used as a concrete strategy in the school social work to support adolescents who are victims of bullying.

Den överhängande risken att utsättas för våld i prostitution finns - oavsett verksamhetsområde: En jämförande kvalitativ studie om prostituerade kvinnors utsatthet att erfara våld av sexköpare2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to provide the reader with an insight into the violence that accompanies prostitution and that the imminent risk of violence is present regardless of whether the woman is active in “off-street” or “on-street” prostitution. The purpose has been to carry out a comparative study of the vulnerability to violence by sex buyers that women in “off-street” and “on-street” prostitution experience. In addition, a qualitative content analysis of Swedish biographies on prostitution was used to study how women in prostitution described their meetings with sex buyers. The main results are that there are differences in the violence that women experience from sex buyers and how they describe their experiences. These differences depended on whether the women were active in “off-street” or “on-street” prostitution. Based on the biographies, it was found that the women in “off-street” had a sexual self-harm, that a normalization process of the experienced violence could be distinguished and that women active “on-street” have an increased risk of being victimized according to the lifestyle theory. The conclusions of this study are that the theoretical aspects have a significant role in what kind of violence women in prostitution experience from sex buyers.

Föreställningar om våldsutsatta män i samkönade relationer; exempel från stödgivande samhällsinstanser.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Statistics show that very few men exposed to domestic violence, either in heterosexual or same-sex relationships, contact any social service. Although domestic violence is often restricted to being defined the same as heterosexual relationships as same-sex relationships, knowledge about violence in same-sex relationships is inadequate. The purpose of this study was to examine if any perception and understanding of violence in same-sex relationships exist within supporting community instances, focusing on male victims of domestic violence. The study containing eight qualitative interviews with respondents within supporting community instances. The result is presented under the themes “stödgivande samhällsinstansers bemötande”, “heteronormativa föreställningar kring våldsutsatta män”, “möjlighet till stöd och skydd” and “outing och skam”. To notice is that the result showed that perceptions about heteronormativity can affect which type of support and protection male victims of domestic violence is given. Lastly, a discussion about the developed result around the inadequate knowledge about violence in same-sex relationships will be held. The conclusions of the study were that there is a heteronormative approach within some of the supporting community instances we interviewed. There are also suggestions for future research and therefore needs to be studied at length.

Kompetensfrågan inom äldreomsorgen: Hur uppfattningar om kompetens formar omsorgsarbetet, omsorgsbehoven och omsorgsrelationen2014Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation examines how perceptions of competence affect the care of older persons, and the values and vocational conceptions of care work and care recipients that are tied to the perceptions of what skills that are needed and why. Competence is defined by three parts with relevance for the content of care work: what knowledge the care workers should have, what tasks they should perform and how they should respond to care recipients. The aim of this dissertation is to analyse how the care managers' and care workers' perceptions of competence form the direction of the care work and how that direction relates to the care recipients’ perceptions of and expectations on the care work.

The care work is characterised by what is analysed as an activation of the recipients - that the recipients themselves should perform as much of the care work as possible. The activation aims at managing the decay of the aging body and is motivated by a vocational conception of the care recipients as different from others, with designations as grateful and passive. This conception is analysed as generation character based on an idea among the care managers and care workers that the society in which the recipients grew up gave them certain cognitive prerequisites that have to be managed in the practical care work.

The care recipients in the study have opposing conceptions and perceptions of care work compared with the care managers and care workers. The recipients’ central objective with the care work is to prevent what has been interpreted as the disrepair of the home. The care recipients’ position in the organisation raises the problem of loyalty towards the care workers and in some sense the care managers. Their loyalty reduces their ability to complain and to influence their situation to the better.

The principle of help to self-help in Sweden: A study of representations and norms regarding old age and care needs and their moral and ethical implications for care work2018In: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to describe and analyse the principle of help to self-help in care work and the representations of and norms on old age and care needs supporting the principle in relation to moral and ethical aspects. The article is based on the results of a study conducted in a small rural Swedish municipality in 2006–2008 and a study conducted in a big city in 2014 and 2015. The material consists of interviews with first line managers, care workers and care receivers. The results of this article show that the principle of help to self-help in the care of older people exists in both public sector home care in a small municipality and a home care system in a major city with customer choice system. The results also show that representations of and norms on old age and care needs highlight the normative value of help to self-help, which has both ethical and moral dimensions. In the care of older people this is translated into care receivers maintaining their mental and physical strength which challenges the value of care receivers’ self-determination.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Research School in Social Work (RSSW) was initiated in 2008, as collaboration between all Swedish universities with post-graduate education in Social Work. The intention was to assemble a broader basis for subject specific postgraduate courses, to strengthen the identity of Social Work as a postgraduate subject and to work for an international collaboration.

This report describes the PhD students in social work and their experience of attending RSSW-courses. The report addresses how support, such as tutoring, affect participation in RSSW-courses and also highlights various aspects of the future, as the doctoral students’ future career paths.

Results of the study reveal that tutoring situation, gender, and age, among other things, affect the participation in and experience of RSSW. The study also shows that the subject orientations and course needs of doctoral students in Social Work are broad and varying. It is further a large part of the doctoral student group who would consider a future career outside the academy, which raises the question of where the scientific knowledge in the long run end up and what that means for the development of Social Work as a subject.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how graduates and practiced social workers experience their current job in social services. Previous research shows that support from the employer and previous job experience are two important aspects of how social workers deal with their work. The theoretical basis for the study is ”demand- control model” and  ”coping ". With these theories, we can gain a greater understanding of the structures and the individual's own strategies for dealing with demanding work situations. The study consists of a qualitative approach with six semi-structured interviews with people working in the social service sector. The result showed that the experience does not necessarily mean that you have the best coping strategy or the ability to handle stressful work situations. Being able to manage set standards and demands was of most importance when working under stressful conditions. Finally, we noticed that both the newly graduated and the experienced social workers use emotional- and problem focused coping. Those who used problem focused coping were those who could be off work and not think about their clients.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to illustrate male and females own experiences of codependency. In this study has an qualitative approach been used and the material consists of eight pre-recorded conversations, podcast episodes, published on the Internet. The empirical material has been analyzed from a theory of family roles and a gender perspective. It showed that the participants in this study has been negatively affected by growing up in an environment characterized of abuse or mental illness and felt that they had embraced one or more roles to manage their life situation. The result also showed that the participants had experienced negative consequences in adult life. The result of this study also showed that developing codependency was equally common among both male and female in this study, though were there differences between how male and females express their codependency. The females experienced a feeling of isolation, became quiet and reclusive and the males experienced that they had a more externalizing behavior. The experience of taking a big responsibility in childhood and adolescence was equally common among the participants of this study and led to that their own needs were ignored. The negative consequences of codependency and their connection to the gender norms of today were also discussed.

”Hjärtat känns inte svart längre”: En kvalitativ studie om hur den kriminella bakgrunden kan påverka ungdomars identitet2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of how young people's current identity is affected by their criminal background. We also want to understand the impact of resources in these young people’s social networks (that is their social capital) on their life course and formation and reformation of their identity. The theoretical frameworks used (as a tool to be able to analyze the empirical data) are theories of stigma, identity and social capital. The empirical study was conducted using semi-structured interviews that focused on questions about the life-story of informants. The empirical data is divided into different themes such as the informants' family relationships, neighborhood, friendship as well as their schooling. Further described is the informants’ first offense and the time spent at the prisons / "youth homes". We also discuss the informants’ distance from crime, the informants’ self-images at present and their idea about the future. Finally, we discuss how various factors during the life course shape and reshape the young criminal's identities, the factors that contributes to a break from criminal acts and the difficulties they encounter while dissociating from previous networks and life style.

    Abstract [en]

For the majority of the 2000th century welfare and social services in Sweden were almost synonymous with the universalistic welfare-solutions provided by the nation state.  In the late 1980th and the early 1990th a dramatic change occurred through extensive market reforms the monopolistic welfare-solutions were challenged in favor for a pluralistic welfare market. A competitive welfare-market would increase efficiency and quality of services. But what is quality in welfare and social services?

Through a two-part study, using in city of Stockholm as a case and institutional organizational theory and theories on quasi-markets this study has investigated and problematized quality in city of Stockholm’s special housing for the elderly voucher system.

En kritisk diskursanalys av svenska dags- och kvällstidningars framställande av ADHD2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how ADHD is discussed in the Swedish mass media. We have examined 21 articles from Aftonbladet, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter, Göteborgs-Posten and Svenska Dagbladet. All articles are reviewed from the newspapers online edition.

Theories used are Erving Goffman’s theory of Stigma and Michael Foucault´s theory of categorization as well as Göran Palm's, Renée Skogersson's and Anders R. Olsson's theories about mass media. We have also used relevant literature. The main method we used is of Norman Fairclough´s three-dimensional critical discourse analysis where we in most parts have focused on the text analysis and also with the help of text coding system.

One of our conclusions is that ADHD is sometimes described with negative words such as "brat" or "problem child". With these words we discovered the existence of underlying messages of the articles that are not expressed clearly. ADHD-medications were often described negative in the articles and also the reasons why a person might actually have ADHD were found to be discussed in the mass media.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how authors on Instagram describe masculinity norms. We aimed to further analyse how the authors illustrate the consequences of masculinity norms in relation to social problems. The study is based on 25 posts from authors on Instagram which were analysed by a content analysis method. The theoretical framework in this study consists of Connells (1995, 2008) theory of masculinity. A conception of socialization is also included (Connell 1995, 2009). The results indicated that masculinity norms have a negative impact on men by how they are expected to be, what they are expected to feel, what is allowed for them to talk about, how they should act and what sexual desires they should have. Furthermore, the study showed how masculinity norms lead up to social problems such as reluctance to seek help and using violence against others. The main conclusion of this study was that social problems often are based on the fact that men, due to present masculinity norms, are in need of proving, defending or maintaining their masculinities in different contexts. The man himself along with everyone around him are the one who pays for the consequences of masculinity norms.

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study aims to contribute to increased knowledge of how collaboration between social services, schools and health centers works and can be improved in the work with children and youths with mental illness. This study focuses on the obstacles and opportunities that according to professionals often arises when different areas of the field collaborate. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, six qualitative interviews were conducted with professionals who are currently employed within each organization. The empirical data was analyzed using a theoretical framework that consists of the followingtheoretical concepts:collaboration, knowledge and explanation factors, formal and informal rules, organizational situation, external and internal conditions, opportunities for collaboraton and multidiciplinary teams. The results of this study indicates that the professionals interpret that obstacles and opportunities for collaboration occurs on both a structural and individual level. There is an awareness of how and why obstacles are created, but according to the professionals there is a lack of personal contact and communication between the organisations, which is needed to get a better understanding of each other's work and responsibilities. Having a discussion about collaboration is, according to the professionals, central for them to be able to provide children and youths with mental illness the optimal support and assistance that they may require

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this C-thesis is to examine the employment agents and specialist´s views and experiences of disability coding at the Employment Service. The study is based on investigating why employment agents and specialists use disability coding, what determines who should be coded and how the officials believe the code can be experienced by those who are the subject of it. The result also shows that the coding is a control function for the Public Employment Service's own activities so that it will be visible in the systems which job seekers that have extra needs and to report statistics to the government. It also emerges from the result that a disability code is not always based on medical evidence about the one to be coded, but many times solely on the employment agents and specialists own assessments of how the life situation is for the job seeker and what problems they may have. Finally, it emerges from the result that the officials views on the impact of coding on the individuals being coded are quite unanimous as they consider that coding is positive for the one assigned to it because it allows a chance to be employed, even though some officials may understand that the categorization can be perceived as stamping or categorizing.

The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of the significance of sexual orientation for the workplace experience. The study is based on four interviews with homosexual police officers that are members of “The association for gay police officers in Sweden” [English translation]. The study research how open they are with their sexual orientation in their workplace, their colleagues response to their sexual orientation and how the membership in the association has affected them in their workplace. The study uses three theoretical starting points: the notions of social constructivism and the normativity of heterosexuality and also Raewyn Connells theory about masculinity (1996). The result of the study is presented in five different parts. The first part describes that there are stereotypes within the police profession about both homosexuality and police officers. The second part shows that there is a presumption about heterosexuality that for example becomes clear within everyday conversations with colleagues. The third part describes the colleagues’ reactions, both positive as well as negative, towards the interviewed people. The fourth part describes the association’s effect on the interviewed police officers, which to a large part is positive. The fifth, and final, part clarifies the difference between working within the police force in a big city or a small city. Working as a homosexual police officer in a big city shows to be favorable. In conclusion the police officers in Stockholm have a better work situation than the police officer in a smaller city where there are more reactions and stronger presumptions about heterosexuality.

Health and living conditions of Samis compared with other citizens based on representative surveys in three Swedish regions2020In: International Journal of Social Welfare, ISSN 1369-6866, E-ISSN 1468-2397Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This is the first general health survey of Samis compared with other Swedes to be based on randomised samples. In three regions, Samis were compared with respondents to the Public Health Investigation (n = 613 Samis and 6,309 respondents). Samis were also compared as to gender and membership in reindeer‐herding Sami villages (SVs). The survey shows that Samis of today have better education, work situation and health, and a healthier lifestyle than other Swedish citizens living in the same regions. There are, however, great differences among the Samis themselves. Members of SVs have weaker finances, and they report having less societal trust and worse health than non‐members do. Male members have lower education, are less involved in social activities and report worse overall health, but do not have a higher incidence of psychiatric problems, than other Samis. Samis, in general, have similar or better health and social situation than non‐Samis, but male SV‐members face greater problems and higher risks than other Samis.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to develop and deepen the understanding on how voluntary organizations and public sector cooperate when working with homelessness. Furthermore, to investigate these organizations different methods and approaches used in their work with homelessness. A number of analytical questions were formed based on a governance perspective and an organizational theory. The study is based on ten interviews carried out on individuals that work in voluntary organizations in Stockholm and district administrations in Stockholms stad.

The results show that the district administrations and voluntary organizations focus on the preventions and the consequences of homelessness. Furthermore, the result shows that the cooperation has several appearances which have some flaws. As for the close co-operation between the district administrations and the voluntary organizations, it is sometime difficult to ascertain who is responsible and who controls the organization. When it comes to collaboration with other agencies such as health care units, there may be disagreements regarding who takes the responsibility of the client. Our respondents describe this act as a ”catch 22” situation where the client does not get the right help.

Att arbeta inom socialtjänsten: En studie om medias framställning av socialarbetares arbetsmiljö2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The fact that the media is involved and creates the public's perception of reality is perhaps nothing you think of daily. Based on their design, the mass media has a great power to influence how the public interprets different social phenomena. The aim of this study was to find which framing the media creates by the social workers' work environment and its effects. As well as which image media conveys to the public. The study's questions intended to examine how the social workers' work environment was presented, what conditions that emerged were linked to the work environment and which participants were to be heard in articles. To achieve our results, a framing analysis was carried out, by framing how the journalists strategically, consciously or unknowingly, produced what they want to convey. To our help in the analysis work, the framing theory was used to be able to find out how the media portray and produce the social workers' work environment and its effects. The 15 analyzed newspaper articles used for the study were published between 2014–2019. There were no particularly large differences in how the journalists described the social workers' working conditions between the time span examined. It emerged, among other things, that the social service as a workplace is presented as an unhealthy workplace and that social workers flee due to heavy work demands and because of a work environment characterized by threats and violence. The frames that emerged clearly in the study were general frames. Which are formed by a media logic that the journalists themselves created, that is, based on news editorial values, practices and routines. The significance of how the different frames influence is discussed in the study as well as what effects the various participants that may come to speak has influence on the public.

Ensamhet: En studie om orsakerna till uppkomsten av ensamhetskänslor i samhället2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to analyse different reports regarding sex as a self-injurious behaviour and why adolescents harm themselves through sex. Sex as a self injury is not as visible as other types of deliberate self harm such as cutting or burning skin and it can be anyone around you. Based on selected reports as our empirical material we want to acknowledge why youngsters conduct harmful actions through sex and also what differences and similarities the reports share. We want to pay attention to the topic of sex as a self injury and gain an increased understanding of it.

Our empirical material consist of five different reports with a connection to sex as self injury. Although our focus is mainly on non-suicidal self injury among adolescents, it is important to mention that there is a higher risk of suicidal thoughts in connection to self injurious behaviour. We have analysed the reports through a qualitative method, text analysis. Our results showed fives recurring themes. These are causes of sex as self injury, differences in how the concept is used, differences among age and gender, vicious cycle and treatment. The themes are then connected to theories such as gender, sexuality and identity with a premisses of social construction.

    Abstract [en]

"Perhaps if one had been raised elsewhere, in another environment ..." is a qualitative study whose purpose is to describe and create an understanding of past criminals' experiences in their childhood and turning point. The questions are further explained how risk factors and risk behaviors affect the childhood, as well as what factors can lead to a turning point. The empiric is reached through the performance of six individual interviews with former criminals, and analyzed with theories of Social bonds by Travis Hirschi, Life Course Theory of Laub & Sampson and KASAM by Aaron Antonovsky. The result and conclusions show that previous criminals have shown a risk behavior based on the risk factors they were exposed to during their growth. Furthermore, the turning point is understood to depend on how strong and weak the previous criminals associated with their relatives during their childhood. The turning point can also be understood from the inner will that the former criminal finds, with the help of motivation and meaningfulness.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how elderly with mental illness is assured help and support within the municipal elderly care in Stockholm. The aim was further on to receive an increased understanding of the social workers professional role and experiences in their work regarding elderly with mental illness. The empirical data has been obtained through group-and individual interviews with social workers operative within the elderly care in Stockholm, in addition to a qualitative text analysis. Based on the study's theoretical concepts: grass-roots bureaucracy, discretion and the principle of normalisation, the empirics has been analysed. The result indicates a deficiency of resources, a lack of knowledge regarding mental illness amongst the elderly, in addition to mental illness being difficult to define. Further on, aspects of restricted discretion and a lack of the normalization principle are described, which depictures that needs of the elderly individuals are set in relation to standardised efforts and resource priorities. To conclude, a reflection about how the municipal elderly care and its aim possibly would have altered if the principle of normalisation was implemented and based upon a model of rights.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the essay is to investigate how legal certainty is for abusive women and men. This is done by analyzing how the Administrative Court in Stockholm describes women and men in the appealing court decision regarding the preparation of care according to Care of Abusers Act (LVM). The empirical material consists of 20 judicial decisions from the Administrative Court. In order to reach a deeper understanding of the role of gender norms in the judiciary, the survey has been conducted with a gender perspective based on the purpose of the paper, we have considered questions about how women and men are described and whether there are any gender differences in the appealing court decision. To answer the questions, a text analysis based on a hermeneutic approach has been made, then linking the analyzed text in relation to previous research and the chosen theoretical concepts: social construction, stigma and gender. The general conclusions we have reached are that the gender differences described in the court coincide with the general gender norms in the society by describing the gender in various ways in the law application of LVM. This means that the Administrative Court does not fully consider everyone's resemblance to the law according to the principle of equality and objectivity in Instrument of Government (RF). The conclusions are explained by describing how gender is made in a construction process.

    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this essay was to study how social workers work with clients who suffer from addiction problems. The study enlightens how the legal framework concerning the legislation of social services can be seen as either a possibility or restriction in terms of processing social welfare. Furthermore the purpose with the study was to examine what demands that are set at clients with addiction problems. To work with the clients motivation is a reacurring theme that contains both social workers latitude and the demands that are made on the clients. The empirical data is based on interviews with four social workers within the administration of social welfare in commune X. The data in the study was transcribed and organized to be able to analyze. The outcome of the study shows that the legislation fills a fundamental importance in the daily work of the social workers. This is set into seeing that the assignments in the daily work of the social workers appear to be relatively complex. It is shown to be clear that the legislation entails problems regarding differences in the social workers decision making which can raise dissatisfaction among the clients. Additionally, the result in the studie shows the importance of good relations between social workers and clients to promote the work and use the good prerequisites. Consequently, the study does also illuminate some positive aspects in relation to the social workers ability, within their authority, making individual assessment.

    Abstract [en]

The present study entitled ”Living in silence without knowledge” presents and analyses the life stories by some persons living in close relations to relatives with drug abuse or mental disorder. The study is drafted by Elin Edman and Elina Hedin. Previously the main interest in society has been focused on the individuals suffering from mental disorders or being dependent on various substances. The particular social situation of co-dependence has in the past been dealt with in certain research studies but only recently become an issue of public discourse, lifting up the distress endured in silence by the e.g. family members and people around the addicts. The present study wanted to investigate whether if and how the understanding of the role of co-dependent facilitated the coping with and improvement of the existing situation. Five persons older than 18 years with experience of living close to an addict and/or mentally ill person were interviewed and asked to tell their life stories. In analyzing the information obtained the two theoretical perspectives of coping and the sense of coherence were taken into account. The present study shows that the participants of this study, by achieving an understanding of their acting as co-dependent and thereby their impact on the situation, made them change their behavior and relation both to the dependent and the social circumstances. In general the changes made, resulted in better life conditions for the whole social group and often real improvements for the victim of co-dependence.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine and compare the preparatory work of two government efforts to diminish segregation in Sweden: Storstadssatsningen and Nya långsiktiga reformprogrammet för minskad segregation. We have, by a qualitative textual analysis, examined how these preparatory works represent the citizen, their intention, efforts and goals and how the influence and participation by the citizen is intended to meet the needs of recipients of these efforts. The vulnerable citizen is represented in the same way in both preparatory works. Similarities that can be seen are citizens described with a lack of competencies and defined by the problems of their neighbourhood. There are differences concerning how citizens by ethnicity are described. The goals and achievements, which have been compared in both preparatory works, are focused on work and education as instruments to breach segregation. Participation and the influence by the citizen is given a great deal of space in Storstadssatningen, but hardly no space in Nya långsiktiga reformprogrammet för minskad segregation.

We can see a much harder climate in the community, with increased segregation, where citizens without power and participation develops alienation and where the gap between groups increase. With a perspective of integration and concepts of empowerment and mobilization, we examine possibilities for an alteration. We examine the representation of this methods in both preparatory works.

In this study, we can see defects in the government welfare systems, which urges a responsibility, in the social work, to define and work with new methods.

    Abstract [en]

The world faces major challenges in terms of sustainable development. Sustainable development is a guiding principle for the United Nations and the international community and it is also a recurrent concept in everyday life. The aim of this study was to compile and analyze studies in social work that includes sustainability and/or sustainable development. We have conducted a literature review where 13 studies were compiled, analyzed and compared based on the global definition of social work. The result shows that social work should play a significant role in the work for sustainable development, and this requires a holistic approach in order to include the natural environment. According to result issues regarding environment and sustainable development should also be incorporated in the curriculum of social work education. The dimensions primarily addressed in the chosen studies are social sustainability and ecological sustainability, as well as social justice and ecological justice. Our interpretation is that social work has begun a shift towards sustainable development. Social work can, and should be, a part of the work for sustainable development.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to see how the “high security”-departments within the prison system in Sweden called “Fenixavdelningarna” are legitimized, by making a critical discourse analysis of the perception of the prisoners placed there. We do it to create an understanding of the discursive processes that affect criminal policy development. The intention was to look upon the discourse concerning this group of prisoners in a dialectical relationship with the institutions that maintains a separation of these prisoners within the prison system. The study was conducted based on a qualitative approach with Faircloughs critical discourse analysis approach based on the ideas of social construction. The theoretical framework used is among others Foucault's theories of disciplinary power, Goffman's theories of stigmatization and Maslow's psychological theories. To complement our theories we add earlier research within this field of knowledge. The results demonstrate that the discursive formations that are maintained on the prisoners placed in these “high security”-departments describes this as certain to other prisoners because they are considered to be "mentally disturbed" and "dangerous to society". Our conclusion is that this is legitimizing a disciplinary isolation and an exclusion of these prisoners in order pursue a neo-liberal policy of "hard on crime" and more severe punishments, and this development contradicts the objectives in social work.

    Abstract [en]

Truancy is a problem in the Swedish schools today, just as well as in other European and other developed countries where educataion is gratuitous. Teachers all over Sweden go to classes with a clear and well-planned schedule for the day. But some are unable to do their work because of asent students. In this study I have chosen to focus on the perspective of the youths and the main question is: how do students discuss and think about truancy. During the study I have chosen a qualitative approach and have therefore done observation in various classes in a Swedish senior high school in a suburb outside Stockholm during twelve weeks. I have also done twelve interviews with the same number of students, six girls and six boys. The age ranges from 16 to 19 with two students from each grade. The result of the study is that some of the students are indiffirent when it comes to school. They just do not care about attending school all the lessons and all the days. Some of the students are absent when they feel they have lack of time in the prospect of a big examination. But the most astonishing statement from all the twelve students is that they state that their parents mean that the education is the student own responsibility.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to illustrate how staff working closely with young adults with a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome experience the group's participation in society. Furthermore, we have investigated what potential opportunities and obstacles that the staff consider that people in this group meet when they participate in society and how the staff view the future of young adults with Asperger's syndrome in relation to participation in society. We have had a qualitative phenomenological approach to our study. Field data consists of six interviews with staff working closely with the group, within the social service and in various LSS functions on behalf of social services. The transcribed interviews have been analyzed using a content analysis. Our results show that young adults with Asperger's syndrome experience insufficient participation in society, which has resulted in exclusion. It also appears that society's 'normal image' creates discrimination and oppression for people with different functional variations to the extent that their strengths are partially overlooked. Our results also show that even though young adults with a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome are stigmatized there is an ongoing visualization that can have a positive effect on the groups participation in society.

Relationen mellan spelberoende och kriminalitet: en kvalitativ studie med fem före detta spelberoende med kriminell bakgrund2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Increasingly high demands, in western welfare states, are placed on a scientifically based social work practice; a so-called evidence based practice. The aim for the study is to investigate evidence based social work practice. This is achieved through a study of the work methods of detached youth workers from Rinkeyby-Kista district administration in Stockholm and their view on evidence based social work. The study is conducted using interviews which together with various documents are analyzed and set against a theoretical framework. The documents consist of a popular science article, two job advertisements and data from detached youth workers. The authors thus use different methods of collecting data. The theoretical framework consists of the National Board model for evidence based work and applied theoretical literature regarding evidence based practice, social work and outreach work.

The results demonstrate that there is uncertainty about the concept of evidence based practice among detached youth workers included in the survey. This furthermore leads to an evidence based practice which is largely carried out without a professional awareness.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine whether clients with former drug addiction feel that they are able to influence the care that they receive. The aim was also to find out how social workers operate to enable user influence amongst clients. We conducted semi-structured interviews with five clients and two social workers within one treatment home. The theoretical perspectives that were used to analyze the empirical data were user influence and democracy. The results show that clients experience significant involvement in their care-program and in relation to social workers at the treatment home. The results also show that the social workers apply democracy to their work since they constantly encourage clients to think independently, make their own decisions and set goals for the future. The limiting factors of user influence were considered to be financial questions, unengaged social workers, and different work procedures among municipalities. Since clients become involved and are able to influence the content of the care, user influence within addiction care is believed to benefit patient outcomes and prevent relapse. User influence can lead to positive social worker-client relationships and encourage individuals with addiction to voluntarily seek care.

Jag har ett liv här. Där har jag ingenting.: En kvalitativ studie om hur integration kan påverka ensamkommande barns identitet2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Research shows that men are less likely to seek help for their mental health issues and that masculine norms that dictate how a man should be lie behind this unwillingness to seek help. The objective of this qualitative study was to research how masculinity norms impact young mens perceptions about men with depression or depressive symptoms. This was accomplished through Connells (1999) theory about hegemonic masculinity and Link and Phelans (2001) conceptualization of stigma. In order to fulfill the purpose of this study three focus group interviews were conducted with young men between the ages of 20 and 35 years. The main results show that the interviewed men described traits such as being handy, strong, disciplined and tough as typically manly and desirable in a man. According to the men the fear of seeking help that exists among men stems in the fear of being perceived as weak and there is an idea of depressed men being lonely and abnormal. The conclusion of this study is that masculine norms, being perceived as non-masculine and the fear of stigmatization are important factors behind how the interviewed men reasoned and talked about men with depression and how they handle it.
