Setting the stage - Embodied and spatial dimensions in emerging programming practices2008In: Interacting with computers, ISSN 0953-5438, Vol. 21, no 1/2, 117-124 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

n the design of interactive systems, developers sometimes need to engage in various ways of physical performance in order to communicate ideas and to test out properties of the system to be realised. External resources such as sketches, as well as bodily action, often play important parts in such processes, and several methods and tools that explicitly address such aspects of interaction design have recently been developed. This combined with the growing range of pervasive, ubiquitous, and tangible technologies add up to a complex web of physicality within the practice of designing interactive systems. We illustrate this dimension of systems development through three cases which in different ways address the design of systems where embodied performance is important. The first case shows how building a physical sport simulator emphasises a shift in activity between programming and debugging. The second case shows a build-once run-once scenario, where the fine-tuning and control of the run-time activity gets turned into an act of in situ performance by the programmers. The third example illustrates the explorative and experiential nature of programming and debugging systems for specialised and autonomous interaction devices. This multitude in approaches in existing programming settings reveals an expanded perspective of what practices of interaction design consist of, emphasising the interlinking between design, programming, and performance with the system that is being developed.

    Abstract [en]

This essay explores how men and women in different age groups experiences Flashapplications, depending on their perception of colour and form. The participants, teenagers at a junior high school, students who just have finished their degree and senior citizens have by answering a form and by taking part in a semi structured interview been able to express their opinion of the following Scandinavian web pages: Santa Maria, Ecco and Indiska.

The participants identify the flash objects by their movements. The participants want to be able to choose weather or not to see the animations and other applications created in Flash, to avoid loosing focus on the other information the trademarks wants to express. The students have the most critical approach to colour, form and the use of Flash objects. The female participants have a more liberal approach to colour and form then the male participants.

Ingen saga utan hjälte: en kvalitativ innehållsanalys av spelet Shenmue II2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Webbradion: ett nytt medium2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to study the role of web radio in Sweden. To fulfill the purpose we have done a case study of two Swedish radio stations: Sveriges Radio AB, which is a public service station, and a commercial station called Mix Megapol. By interviewing two persons from each station and analyzing the contents of their web sites, we have tried to see how the relationship between radio, Internet and web radio looks like. Thus, our method is qualitative. We have come to many conclusion of which some are: The new medium web radio borrows qualities from the traditional radio. At the same time the radio borrows qualities from the Internet to be able to resist competition from the newer medium. The web sites that offer web radio contain a lot of functions that allows the users to listen interactivly. We have also been able to find differences between the public service station and the commercial station when it comes to web radio. Financial aspects lead to different conditions for the two types of radio stations.

I sökandet efter framtidens destinationer: Ur researrangörers perspektiv2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The fast growing tourism industry increases the need for new destinations to meet the markets demand. Because of this, destination development becomes a part of tourism development and it can therefore be interesting and relevant to study this phenomenon. It requires consciousness about the destination’s conditions and to what extent tourism can be developed. The study of these conditions can be useful as they are fundamental for future tourism development at a destination.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze which conditions and characteristics a place should have to become an attractive destination.

Methodology: This study has been executed from a positivistic point of view and a quantitative approach. The collection of data has been carried out through five semi-structured interviews.

Conclusions: This study has reached the conclusion that developing tourism at a destination requires a number of specific characteristics, but that these may vary depending on the type of destination. There are several characteristics but the most emphasized are attractions and activities, accessibility and infrastructure, amenities, political stability and safety.

    Abstract [sv]

Gestaltung ist auch Information: En studie kring layoutens betydelse med Aftonbladet i fokus2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis I'm trying to examine the meaning potential of visual elements and layout in a Swedish newspaper front page and the same newspaper's website's start page, drawing on theories about multimodality and social semiotics developed mainly by Theo van Leeuwen and Gunther Kress. The study is focusing on Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet and the website aftonbladet.se and compares these three different days. In this thesis I also try to examine what the newspaper communicate about its identity through the different visual components. My conclusion is that visual elements and layout have a great importance regarding what a newspaper communicate about how the news articles should be read, but what can be said about a company's identity mostly depend on the genre the newspaper belongs to and how well the reader knows that particular genre.

Lessons learned from facilitation in collaborative design2007In: User Interfaces 2007: Proceedings of the Eighth Australasian User Interface Conference (AUIC2007), Sydney: Australian Computer Society, 2007, 51-54 p.Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The importance of a skilled facilitator in design meetings with users is often emphasized, but less is said about how to improve the facilitation process. This paper reports experiences and lessons learned from facilitation of cardbased sessions in three design cases through an analysis of two sessions with users, and one session with professional designers. The analysis showed that many alternatives were not documented in the sessions with users who designed primarily by talking, compared to the professional designers who primarily designed by placing cards. We propose that facilitation, in cases similar to those presented here, could be improved by suggesting alternatives and possible consequences, prompt the participants to explore the consequences, and graphic facilitation.

Mobiltelefonens grafiska användargränssnitt: - och dess betydelse för pensionärer2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Mobile phone has contributed to massive changes in the way that human beings communicate with each other and is a technology that is a part of society’s globalization. Opinions differ in the area of user interface where some feel that mobile phones exclude users such as senior citizens or users with an intellectual or a physical disability.

Universal Design –‘design for all’, is a vision that intends to bring about settings, products and services that suits as many people as possible irrespective of an individual’s needs and prospects. The criteria for ‘design for all’ are among other things flexibility, user friendliness, comprehensibility and a high tolerance for mistakes.

The purpose of this essay is to investigate the mobile phones graphic user-interface from the theory of a universal design. From this general purpose the study look more closely at senior citizens perspective of mobile phones graphic user-interface. A qualitative study in the form of 4 interviews was used. All of the individuals that participated in the study felt that the mobile phone is a very good and beneficial invention. Mobile phones bring about a feeling of security and safety since it is felt that is always possible to reach family and friends in the event of a crisis. It is difficult to provide a interface that is Universal, because every individual is unique. Every individual has a different opinion on what is Universal Design and what is not. People have different needs of using the mobile phone and that’s one of the reasons why it’s difficult to provide a universal design of the graphical user interface of a mobile phone.

Lojalitetsskapande hos anställda på fristående hotell2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The hotel sector has reviewed big changes, as higher requirements on independent hotels have been set. In order to be able to compete with big hotel chains, it is no longer sufficient to only use the 4P of marketing mix, it is also required a bigger focus on the personnel. Trained and service aimed employees are service companies' intangible assets and they become more important. Globalisation and internationalisation has however contributed to that the labor market has become more open, and employees easier can compare employment conditions or change job.

The aim of this essay is to analyze and to evaluate conditions for the internal marketing at independent hotels, in order to be able to achieve employee loyalty. The essay builds on a comparison between managers' and employees' views about internal marketing.

A qualitative hermeneutical study has been used in order to be able to analyze and evaluate conditions for the independent hotels' internal marketing. Four interviews with the independent hotels' employees and three interviews with hotels' managers have been implemented.

The conclusion is that such factors as a good work environment and salary cannot contribute to that loyalty can be achieved. These factors, on the other hand, can prevent dissatisfaction with the work. It is independent hotels' investment on factors like development opportunities, managers' support and employee participation in decision making that increase the opportunities to achieve loyal employees.

    Abstract [en]

The concept of the photographic truth has had a special status for almost 200 years. Yet with the emerge of digital technology and especially digital photography there has been a loss of the particular connection photography has had in reference to reality. The aim of this study is to see in what ways digitalization has affected the credibility of photography from the perspective of professionals in the field of photography. The digital technology that has enabled the large-scale manipulation of photographies is not, however, the main reason for the decreased credibility of photography. The ongoing discussion about the available possibilities concerning digital imagery and manipulation has had a far more powerful effect on the concept of the photographic truth. Along with these possibilities a post-photographic photograph has seen the light of day. We discuss further some credibility problems caused by this new phenomenon; i.e. the post-photographic photographies can’t be considered to have the same status as the traditional photographies when it comes to presenting reality truthfully. We approached the subject through theory studies and methodically through personal interviews.

Key words: credibility, digitalization, manipulation, remediation, reality, noeme, and the post-photographic era.

I informationens tjänst: Krav i platsannonser och kompetens hos anställda som publicerar på Internet2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine the attitudes and willingness towards climate compensation in air travel. The study discuss if people feel a personal responsibility about the environment. Earlier research shows that tourists are positive towards climate compensation, but in reality very few use this service. The main question is: Which are the reasons for travellers not to use climate compensation? The used methodology is qualitative and based on ten interviews with people who have travelled by air one or several times since January 2007, when the service was first established. The interviews were then analyzed from a hermeneutical perspective to obtain an understanding for how the respondents perceive the human impact on the environment. This perception leads to their standpoint towards climate compensation. Their standpoints are divided into five subjects: uncertainty, trust, an abstract feeling, discourages and responsibility, which are analysed against selected theories.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

It has become increasingly common for a city or region to use sporting and media events to promote themselves. But what is behind these events? What kind of organisation is necessary to plan and run them? In the summer of 2009 the internationally known Volvo Ocean Race will arrive in Stockholm. The race is eight months long and will be hosted in Stockholm for almost the whole of June. The City of Stockholm is behind the event and Stockholm’s marinas will be responsible for making sure that everything runs smoothly and on schedule. Hosting this big event will have an impact on the citizens of Stockholm in many ways. The purpose of this study is to examine the political decision-making behind the event and the first part of the year of planning and preparations that have lead up to it.

The study is based on interviews with the people responsible for the planning of the event and one politician that were involved in the decision-making. The method that is used in the study is Grounded Theory, which the authors believe has been valuable in this case. The implication of using this method is that the authors have been able to look more closely into the planning of the event without being too influenced by earlier learned theories. The method also can help us to see patterns in the study that otherwise could be missed. In the end of this study we look at previous research and give suggestions for future studies. The authors hope that this study can give inspiration to other researchers in this growing and interesting field.

    Abstract [sv]

Communication During Crisis in the Travel and Tourism Industry: Toward Sounder Guidelines2007In: International tourism: selected chapters / [ed] Ľudmila Novacká, Bratislava: University of Economics , 2007Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Communications during crisis is always difficult. By the time a risk turns into crisis it is too late to think about hoe to mange the communications, this has to be planned in advance. While many guidelines have been offered in crisis communications, these guidelines may prove to be pitfalls when faced with an actual crisis. This article discusses communication strategies for crises as they occur in the travel industry the study is examines the responses of a Delphi panel of industry professionals to three case studies in tourism. The study suggests that at least some of the oft-repeated guidelines may need revision and refinement. Crises are too complex in nature to prescribe a "one-size-all" remedy.

This paper discuss a forecast about Swedish travel habit till year 2000, which segments of the market are supposed to demand more travel experiences and in which way are they going to travel. And furthermore is Sweden an attractive destination? The method used in this study is a modified Delphi method, which worked out very well. Finally will be discussed how much of the forecast has been fulfilled, because the initial forecast was made 1991 and the evaluation of this forecast has been made in autumn 2000.

Future Visions of the Tourism Products2007Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper discuss new expressions like Experience Economy and Dream Society, both both expressions imply that the society are now facing other demands from customers concerning tourism products. In many ways we are talking about progression ofeconomic values from teh tourist's point of view as well as from the view of the producers. In the future the producers have to focus more on making and deliver an experience for individuals then today and in older days.

In the future producers have to deliver much more complex product offers then before, the complexity of the tourism product will increase and tohandle that requires a lot of knowledge as well as well trainedemployees. We will try to find out what the next step will be, from Experience Economy or Dream Society offering complexproducts - to, maybe, transformation which is an offering to the individual that he or she can be guided, the customer will be the product.

To summing up the future will focus much more on individual, tailor made products and edutainment.

En fallstudie av Södertörns högskolas intranät Kurswebben2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

We have made a qualitative study of what the students at Södertörns högskola use Södertörns högskola’s intranet Kurswebben for and how they experience the use of it. For this purpose we have made a qualitative interview examination with six students. The empirical material has been analysed according to our own analytic model which is based on existing usability theories and consists of the tree parts content, function and design.

Our conclusion is that the students use Kurswebben mainly to keep themselves updated, download teaching material and schedules. According to our study, the students most of the time experience their use of Kurswebben as simple, but sometimes have a reluctance to visit it. The reason is that the students experience that Kurswebben is complicated, boring and many functions do not work or are experienced as unnecessary and irritating. Through a usability examination and a restructuring of Kurswebben´s content, function and design the needs of the students could be met.

Torö Stenstrand: Ett paradis för vågsurfare?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Torö Stenstrand belongs to the nature reserve Ören which is located at a headland on the island of Torö in the southernmost part of Stockholm County. Wave surfing came to Sweden and Torö Stenstrand in the end of the 1970s. There were some local enthusiasts that discovered the place and saw that the waves would suit for surfing. Ever since, the official Swedish surfing championship has been carried out almost every autumn since the early 1990s. There is, however, a conflict about whether the beach should be available to the public or if the private properties, that are situated along some parts of the beach, should be allowed to have ownership down to the water. It is therefore interesting to investigate how wave surf tourism could be developed in a sustainable perspective.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze how wave surfing tourism can be developed at Torö Stenstrand.

    • To describe and explain the conditions for wave surfing at Torö Stenstrand.
    • To make a study on how Torö Stenstrand can develop it´s potential of being Sweden´s best all-year-round available wave surfing spot.

Methodology: This study has been executed from a hermeneutic point of view and a qualitative approach. The collection of data has been carried out through four semi-structured interviews and television news.

Conclusions: The conclusion of the study is that there are many possibilities for developing wave surfing tourism at Torö Stenstrand and that the conflicts between inhabitants and wave surfers might be solved, if not totally than at least partially. Since Torö Stenstrand consists of unspoiled countryside and is a nature reserve, there are limits for what you can do, but that can also be a strength seeing that the planning needs to be done very thorough. The theory about a destinations multidimensional strength shows that all dimensions are important but that technological, political, environmental, social and cultural dimensions are most important. The theory about the 6A framework for the analysis of tourism destinations shows that attractions, activities and accessibility are the factors that can be applied on Torö Stenstrand.

E-bokning av biljetter: En kvantitativ studie om människors benägenhet att boka biljetter över Internet2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to find out how visually impaired people get information on Internet. Visually impaired people has got the right to be able to use the Internet like everyone else. We are also going to revise which aids visually impaired people use today, and how they work in practise. What problems can you run into when you use these aids? We are also going to revise how the webpages design affect the use of the Internet for the visually impaired people. The sites of today tends to contain more and more graphics without alternative texts. The aids a visually impaired person use have problems to interpret the graphics, which leads to that many sites are inaccessible for this group of people . We have interviewed nine visually impaired and blind people to get insight in how they use the Internet and which aids are the most common and how they work in practise. We have come to the conclusion that a lot of visually impaired people today are very dependent of the Internet. These people use sites that they from their own experience knows works. The persons we have talked to told us that they feel that many sites are not adjusted to visually impaired people. At the same time we discovered that the technology to interpret graphics on the Internet actually exists. But this technology is not available since the eye clinics does not realise the importance of updating the aids more often.

Three challenges when designing for children’s everyday digital literacy2008In: Nordic Journal of Digital Literacy, ISSN 1891-943X, Vol. 3, no 2, 130-141 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We use the concept of digital literacy to refer to people’s competence of expressing themselves in computational form, and in this paper we specifically discuss the design of interactive technology aimed at letting children become digitally literate. A rarely discussed aspect of digital literacy in this respect concerns how it is supposed to take form in the context of improvised styles of use and interaction, resembling the kinds of activity commonly observed in kindergartens, school yards and centres for after-school activities. In such settings children often organize their own play activities, peers may go in and out of activities as they want, often without any necessary intervention by adult supervision. We align this kind of activity with the notion of ‘casual leisure’, and outline four basic challenges concerned with: a) a perspective on interaction, b) activity and context, c) the view of the user, and d) the character and role of the technology. We discuss these in relation to research attempting to design, evaluate, and make useful sense of children’s digital literacy in such activity. Our analysis identifies the sources of these challenges as due to expressions of tension between play and learning, between designers and users and a general striving for ‘hard fun’. The challenges and their consequences may be summarised as 1) the use of setting as allowing for spontaneous interactions, 2) the striving towards a participants’ perspective, 3) the incorporation of offline and social aspects into the design, and 4) the balancing of challenge with the easy and the accessible.

Where all the interaction is sketching in interaction design as an embodied practice2008In: Proceedings of the 7th ACM conference on Designing interactive systems: February 25-27, 2008, Cape Town, South Africa / [ed] Johann Van der Schiijff; Gary Marsden, New York: ACM Press, 2008, 445-454 p.Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sketching and design sketches are often recognized as key elements of successful interaction design practice and a central skill in interaction design expertise. Interaction design is a relatively young field without well-developed conventions, tools, and formalisms. We analyze the practical work and the conduct of interaction designers in how they express interaction and dynamics through whiteboard drawings. We focus on how talk and action were used to shape the meaning of the drawings. The ways the designers imagined that users would interact with the system and how it would mediate communication between users became topical through a web of drawings, talk, and embodied action. Our analysis forefronts three aspects of interaction design: 1) the role of the design material 2) the role of embodied action in interaction design, and 3) talk and embodied action as central means of doing design. We argue that the qualities of a design material need to be understood in relation to the activity in which it is taken into use and through the kinds of actions that the participants engage in. This implies that design representations do not carry meaning in themselves but are made meaningful through design activity.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Thousands of messages compete for consumer’s attention every day. Its getting more and more difficult for companies and organisations to communicate their messages to potential customers. The use of customer reviews for technical and media products has been proven to increase sales for companies that sell this kind of products. This essay aims to find out if customer reviews are a good way to market services that are more complex as well. Vacation packages offered by tour operators are much more complex products than computers and mp3 players. Can customer reviews help tour operators to stand out from competitors and how can they best design them to increase sales and build their trademark?

We study customer reviews from three perspectives using three different methods. We map the phenomenon’s existence through observation of tour operator’s home pages. Criteria we look for are; how many of the 187 tour operators in Sweden have customer reviews, what form do they have, are negative reviews published and other criterions with relevance. Then we interviewed some of the tour operators that have customer reviews to find out their purpose with customer reviews and how they handle them. We also conduct a customer survey to find out the presumptive travellers response to customer reviews. Some conclusions from the study are:

    • 20 per cent (37 of 187) of the tour operators have customer reviews of some sort on their home pages.
    • 50 per cent of the tour operators have designed their home pages in a way that makes it difficult to find the reviews.
    • The respondents appreciate customer reviews, testimonials from former customer, and often find them inspiring.
    • The respondent doesn’t find reviews that are exclusively positive trustworthy.
    • The respondents prefer the reviews to come in the form of accounts of journeys stories, presented in direct connection to the vacation package.

    Abstract [en]

A conference is not only a meeting but an experience as well. The purpose of this study was to analyze and evaluate four conference organizers within the area of Stockholm Sweden, and to identify their range of activities. Studies were made regarding these conference organizers and how they cooperate with other companies to offer a wider aspect of range. The purpose was also to find out how the demand side of the market appears. The demand side of the market could give an implication of how the conference organizers appear from their perspective and how the conference organizers adjust to their demand. This study attempted to find out if and how these four conference organizers had power to be competitive on the fierce market of conference.A qualitative method was chosen where interviews with conference organizers and conference participants were performed. The conclusion of the study is that one-day -conferences are more often held at geographical more central conference facilities and overnight conferences are usually held at less central conference facilities. These less central facilities are the ones that are in a bigger need of a cooperative scheme to be able to offer competitive conferences. Though the four conference organizers are using different methods they are all successful. By taking advantage of their respective geographical position and networks they provide their own conditions for success

    Abstract [en]

The idea of this thesis emerged from our common interest to explore the life cycle of Swedish tourist destinations. This study has historical features since we tried to identify crucial historical and current push and pull factors, which influenced destinations upturns and downturns. In order to achieve our primary goal and identify those factors, we made two case studies. We chose Åre and Mölle as our cases and these two areas will represent Swedish destinations, and their life cycles, as a whole. The destinations’ developing processes and their nowadays profile are not the same as for two hundred years ago which was a reason and motivation that made us start exploring this specific subject. It required an extensive historical overview and presentation of both global and local changes, which had a certain impact on the destinations.

The method that we used is called hermeneutic and is based on comprehension and interpretation as the essential form of knowledge. This method gave us ability to interpret the presented facts with the help of our own knowledge about the subject. This specially concerns our applied models and the case studies that are implemented.

In the analysis we presented our identified dominant factors that influenced our chosen destinations and summarised influences that have affected Swedish tourism through the history. At the end of this essay we presented our own conclusions and thoughts, which turned out to be a bit different than what was expected. We hope that our conclusions can help other students or scientists in their future researches within the same issue.

Professionella möten i Göteborg: Vad utgör ett bra professionellt möte?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Human beings have been living in the city of Gothenburg for thousands of years. The city was founded in the year 1621. During the years, it went from being an industrial city to later on, a city of events, education and business.

Purpose: The purpose of this investigation is to find out what makes Gothenburg a good city for professional meetings and what should a good professional meeting include.

    Questions at issue:

    • Why is the city of Gothenburg an attractive alterative for a business traveler?
    • What makes Gothenburg a magnet for professional meetings?
    • What elements should be included in the meeting?
    • What can the meeting organizer do to achieve a wow-meeting?

Method: The Authors have used a qualitative method where primary and secondary data have been useful. In this paper the authors have done personal, electronically and phone interviews to be able to answer the stating questions in the best possible way. Several hotels and organizations in Gothenburg were interviewed and also a few business travellers who have been to the city. The interviews consist of two parts, where the first part contained information about the person who was being interviewed and the second was about the professional meetings. After that they were analysed by the authors through a SWOT-analyse which indicates the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

Theory: The theories that were chosen by the authors are: the meeting platform, the Maslow’s stairs of needs and the theory of networks.

Results and Conclusion: The Authors conclusions are based on the results of the interviews which indicated that the best professional meetings are the ones where the premises and the facilities are first and foremost pleasant. After that comes the importance of transportation and last but not least the importance of the social contact between the participants during their free time.
