    Abstract [en]

This essay is a study about school success for immigrant pupils whose ages are between 16 and 19 years when they arrive to Sweden.

The purpose of this study is to examine pupils difficulties in the school and the faktors which affect their success in the school and even possibilities which they can be offered by the school.

This research carried out at two upper secondary schools in the municipality of “Södertälje”. The method which I have used is a qualitative research method which depends on interviews.

The results of the research shows pupils difficulties and the different faktors which influence their success in the school.

My conclusions are that these pupils have many difficulties and to reach a successful schooling, the shcool have to give these pupils a variety of possibilities which builds with pupils self possibilities a foundation for a good and successful schooling.

The research also shows that the both schools are not giving enough possibilities to these pupils. The education system in these schools doesn’t fits for multi – lingual pupils. The pupils in these schools are trying to adapt themselves to the education system.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the essay is to see if the pupils of Ross Tensta Gymnasium feel it is necessary to have an existing cooperation between the police and Ross Tensta Gymnasium. I would like to know how the cooperation works between Ross Tensta Gymnasium and the police and also if the cooperation is visible for the pupils. Furthermore I would like to know if it is necessary to have cooperation between schools and the police even though there are not any obligations to have any.

The methodology I have been using is a qualitative analysis. The entire essay is based on interviews which I have recorded and later transcript it into writing. The theories which I have been using are Wacquant’s use of territorial stigma and also the concept of us and the others in which Stuart Hall explains. The questions I have to help me find the answers to my purpose of investigation are:

    • In which way is the cooperation visible for the pupils of Ross Tensta Gymnasium?
    • How does the relationship work between the pupils of Ross Tensta Gymnasium and the police?
    • What part has the school in the relationship between the police and the pupils?

    Abstract [en]

This research is about different perspectives, offered by three mother tongue teachers, one principal and also featuring a representative from Skolverket, on the subject: teacher legitimation for mother tongue teachers, mother tongue teachers opportunity for competence education and the future of mother tongue education in Sweden.

The theoretical framework is mother tongue language, globalization, the post-colonial theory, power and social inequality. A qualitative approach was used including five interviews taken place in Stockholm, the results does not however represent the whole country nor the community of Stockholm itself.

The result shows that mother tongue teachers thinks the teacher legitimation does not mean anything regarding their already low-status. Even principal and representative from Skolverket express their concern towards the 'non-demand' for mother tongue teachers to get their legitimation and they feel there is a lack of ambition from decisonmakers to include the mother tongue teachers.

As per today there is no higher education for mother tongue teachers leading towards an exam. Mother tongue teachers are worried about their future although principal and representant takes a bright outlook.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Many of the schools premises are neglected and the physical environment has not been prioritised. Instead the focus is set on scientific learning methods and pedagogic. The need for an environmental shift has not got an essential place in the governing documents for schools, although the focus on school premises should be suited to the purpose of the activity and for the pupils needs. Today the interest and the need of research within the physical environment is evermore increasing. The Swedish Work Environment Authority, present in their activityplan for 2006, that the schools premises and equipment is not adjusting to today’s activity and it is in bad condition that can lead to work-related injuries.

The purpose of this essay is to bring to light a different pedagogic train of thought around the surrounding environments importance, for students learning and to compare these with our study of a selection of classrooms and what the teachers to these classrooms consider about the environments importance. We therefore aim to focus our research on the physical environment and how that can influence the learning process. Can one overcome certain boundaries and create new possibilities in a different environment of learning?

The research declared a great number of theories that show the environment influenced students in many different ways. According to the educationalist in the study, it is important to have a miscellaneous environment so all students can learn in their ultimate way. The strict budget, schools are often left with, is preventing any positive improvements that could be made to create a more positive school environment, physically and mentally. There are many ways to get around this problem. Most important is to include everyone in the school so that they feel they are a part of that environment and that they have the power to change things.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay is based on students' growing lack of interest in science at school. Both from a democratic and social perspective, this is a worrying factor for the future. Through observation, I investigated how five science teachers conduct their teaching. This is to get a better understanding of how teachers' behaviour in the classroom can affect students' interest in science. With a socio-cultural research approach, I have tried to highlight a few pieces of the puzzle that may explain students' declining interest in science. The questions that this paper answer, are:

    • What type of communication occurs in the classroom between teachers and students?
    • Are teachers conducting science education from a student point of view?

My results show that in the classroom, there are mainly one-sided communications. Where the teacher explains for the students and they are expected to sit quietly and listen. The teachers made no developmental questions, such as how and why? I thought I saw a hint, that the students have a greater need for dialogue, as they like to turn to their classmates to discuss. One conclusion is that teachers are engaged in constructivist learning, while students seeking a more social constructivist or socio-cultural environment. I think this is a small important piece of the puzzle to understand why students lose interest in science at school. I believe that when students don’t feel that science lessons approaching student life world can a gulf developing between teaching and students. This is probably something that has a profound influence on students' attitude and that may be causing the feeling that education is outdated and boring. Teachers do not work proactively to engage students in the science education and they seem to live in the notion that the subject itself is interesting enough. One way to create an engagement is to illustrate the more general educational perspective on science as a particular curriculum addresses. My study shows that even though teachers believe that a more general view of perspective should lead in education lessons they draw more from a more scientific tradition.

    Abstract [en]

I have taught pupils in several schools in eighth and ninth grade in ‘weak’ groups in mathematics. Most of them seemed to possess potential, but lacked motivation. Even though I tried several pedagogical methods, these approaches failed to engage the students. This prompted thoughts that this may reflect a broader structural problem about the organisation of education in Sweden. A rigid structure that is imposed on adolescents during a very important formative stage of their development that may not reflect their interests or needs and which, in fact, may have the adverse effect of de-motivating them. In response to these thoughts I began to investigate what alternative school system might provide more flexibility and choice for students. The alternative school system that appears to have the potential to effectively address the concerns raised above emerged in Sweden, in the 1950s and is commonly known as “Enhetsskolan”. In these schools pupils could chose according to their interests between three different streams of subjects. To examine the rationale behind “Enhetsskolan” I examined documentation produced during reviews of education during the 1940s. This reviews consisted of skolutredning (1940) and skolkommission (1946) and a subsequent Skolöverstyrelsens evaluation. I have also read some biographies and interviewed two persons about their experiences while they were students at Enhetsskolan in the 1950s. The research concludes that there are close similarities between the contemporary school system and the system that existed in the forties. In response to this finding it is suggested that there should be six years of common education in a primary school followed by at least three years in secondary school, where students have the freedom to select between several alternative subject streams - not too dissimilar to “Enhetsskolan” system of the 1950s.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to get a view of the contemporary approach to children´s learning and how children´s learning and development are influenced by the preschool year for six- year olds, by analyzing the Swedish curriculum. What is the purpose of the preschool- year for six year-olds? What does the curriculum say about what children need when entering primary school? I also wish to investigate how through the curriculum common norms and standards, as far as children´s learning are concerned, are shown and discussed. My result show that the curriculum does not mention much about the preschool year for six-year-olds at all. It seems that this year in school is not given priority, which makes it difficult for the teachers to work with the children of this age and to know what their assignment is. The main purpose for the teachers according to the curriculum seems to be to discover the children who lack sufficient knowledge and social maturity to succeed in the following school years, and to support the children in their endeavor. The text of the curriculum talks about meeting each child at his/ her own level and that each human being needs to form its own learning and is the bearer of its own culture. The sixyear-old class tend to develop into a place where children are taught to adapt to a school environment and school rules in order to ensure that all the children will have similar preknowledge when they start the following year.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to clarify the concept of “managing diversity” and to describe how it appears in the Swedish school, in the classroom as well as in the organisation. To support the study, interviews have been carried out with principals and teachers in three different Swedish schools.

The thesis is divided into two sections; a literature study and an interview section where we describe the thoughts and knowledge of principals and teachers. From a diversity point of view, we discuss the relationship between documents, organisation and teaching.

The study described in this thesis shows that managing diversity has not yet had its break-through in a Swedish school context. The official curriculum of the Swedish school system values diversity, although the directives are unclear as to how the managing of diversity is to be carried out in reality. The teachers and principals we have interviewed lack the necessary knowledge of how the management should be designed to produce the best results. Therefore, the diversity is not successfully managed in the Swedish school, which re-establishes discriminative norms and values.

John Deweys filosofi: En tolkning av John Deweys pedagogiska filosofi2006Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (yrkesexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

During the past twenty years, the Swedish school systems have slowly changed to becomemore and more performance-driven. Private schools have been growing in general and, likeindependent schools and schools managed by municipalities, they profile themselves. Schoolsare becoming more performance and result-oriented, which has changed the roles of teachersin a dramatic way and is in general, still changing.

By profiling students based on theirindividual performance, schools are able to help students identify themselves and their owngoals. The process of profiling is a slow one in which some teachers adapt more quickly thanothers, and one that is critical for other teachers to learn in order to keep up with the demandsof society.Schools, like ordinary businesses, are in constant competition with each other to keep up withthe newest and greatest models of teaching and to rank among the best in high achievements.Perhaps the downside of this modern school structure is that it is often difficult to have aschool where both school management and teachers see eye to eye. School management must heavily focus on the school’s results as a whole. They rely on the teachers to produce theseresults among their students, which at times creates a heavy burden on teachers. The teachersare expected to have a much larger role, often ones that have to do with advertising for theschool in addition to teaching their students. In order to attract more student applications, school management expects that their teachers follow a curriculum that will produce highscores and grades.

This study was done with a secondary school in Stockholm, where four teachers and oneprincipal were interviewed in order to have their opinion of the discussion about teachers newposition in the school as they operate today.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to find out how four preschool teachers view children’s free playing and its impact on their learning. My main questions are:

    • How do the teachers view the children’s free playing?
    • In what ways does the children’s free playing affect their learning, according to the teachers?

This essay is based on a qualitative study in which I have interviewed four female preschool teachers of different ages. I highlight various theories of children’s playing and learning in preschool, by theorists such as Vygotsky, Lillemyr, Knutsdotter Olofsson, Lindqvist, among others. I chose to immerse myself in the teachers' views about children’s free playing and its impact on learning.

The result that I found is that the children’s free playing has a great importance in preschool. The teachers have a positive attitude to the children’s free playing and believe that the children proceed from their imagination and creativity when they play. The results regarding the influence of playing in children’s learning, are that the children interact with each other, show empathy and sympathy, and that they learn from each other's experiences.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study has been to survey what kind of view primary school teachers have on the dyscalculia diagnosis, and which learning methods they believe are important for pupils with mathematic difficulties and dyscalculia. The study will also clarify what they believe is important in the development of the pupils’ self-perception. The following questions have been covered

    • What is the primary school teachers view on the diagnosis dyscalculia?
    • Which learning methods do the teachers consider to be the best for pupils with mathematic difficulties and dyscalculia?
    • How are teachers in primary school reasoning over the identity of pupils with mathematic difficulties and dyscalculia?

The method used to answer these questions has been the qualitative research method. This method goes in-depth with the goal of producing coherence and entirety. It aims to convey understanding (Larsen, 2009).

The empirical material has been analyzed and discussed based on various theories as starting point. The theoretical starting points have been the sociocultural perspective, the concept of integration, the special education perspective and the concept of identity.

The study shows that the teachers have rich, but different reasonings regarding dyscalculia as a diagnosis. They have different perceptions of how the teaching should be organized for pu-pils with mathematic difficulties and dyscalculia. The teachers believe that the school is playing a role in the self-perception of the pupils, but they are divided in their opinions re-garding whether it is decisive or not. They consider that there are various factors in the pupils‘ school life that has great influence on the pupils’ self-perception.

    Abstract [en]

This study is focusing on students at compulsory level and their performance in national exam tests when the students first language is taken into account. Students in Swedish schools with non-Swedish speaking parents commonly follow language classes for limited Swedish proficient students. How does this affect their results when tested in other subjects as physics, biology and chemistry? A general claim is that national tests can provide data for balancedand fair grades. This view is challenged in this paper, through Principal Component Analysisof test results that shows a difference between schools when the schools social position and share of limited Swedish proficient students are measured. Standardized tests are often culturally biased, according to Iris Marion Young and the test themselves are rituals designed to show who holds the key to power and control in the educational system, in the view of Michel Foucault. Guidelines for compulsory level education specifically states that schools should be sensitive to students with non-Swedish cultural experience and respond withadequate measures to students who have special needs. The finding of this study is that the current tests procedures contradict such policies. One reason being the weak instructions when making adaptations of test procedures for limited Swedish proficient students. If adaptations are made in a hap-hazardous fashion they jeopardize the whole purpose of thetests and make them unfair.

    The purpose of this study is to find out how teachers work with fairytales in preschools raising several questions;

How would the teachers describe the literary environment at the preschools? What does theory say about the literary environment?

What type of fairytales do the teachers perceive that they work with? How does theory describe these fairytales?

What is the underlying purpose for teachers working with fairytales? What purposes are described in theory?

My study is based on qualitative interviews conducted with three teachers working in preschool in a small town. The study is based on hermeneutic theory.  I have also used other theory to complete the study.

The teachers all see the possibility of using storytelling as a means to developing the children´ s vocabulary. Some of the teachers also use books and stories as a way of indirectly addressing ongoing personal problems.

The results of my study show that fairytales can be a valuable tool for personal development for children. Working with fairytales could be crucial to how children develop their curiosity and desire to learn and manage ongoing traumas in their lives. My study also raises questions that might be interesting to discuss in a future not so far from now; should teachers be more aware of their important therapeutic role when choosing fairytales?

The problem, which I want to highlight in this essay, is about my fear of losing face in conversationwith the parents of my text. I'm going through different approaches to find out what is happening inmy meetings with parents. I will also see if the knowledge that I get will help me to get deeperunderstanding of my reactions in different situations and if this opens up new possible ways ofhandling them.In my text there will be two stories where the conversation with parents has been difficult. Theyboth illustrate my uncertainty concerning the unpredictability of conversations with distressed orstressed parents. I can prepare the environment, by cleaning and making it look nice before meetingwith the parents. My difficulties are to prepare myself to stand face to face with an annoyed parent. The first story is about Anders´ dad who has a disagreeable tone to me, when he wants me to helphim to find his son's rainwear. The second example is about the conversation with Lisa´s parentswho have a child we suspect have a social disorder. Both of my examples are then analyzed fromdifferent perspectives – authority, power, fear of exposure, timing and habit. In my essay the intention has been to better understand these situations and why I react like I do.My hope is that this work can help me to deal with them differently in the future. I also assume thatmy problem is not unique but shared by others and that my analyses therefore might be of broaderinterest.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Enterprise learning is a pedagogic concept that implies that the students, in correlation with development of theoretical, subject specific knowledge, also develops enterprise competences that will be useful in their everyday life and on the labour market. Enterprise learning has grown over the last ten years, as well in school practicing as within research. In the mathematics subject, a strong educational tradition has delayed the introduction of enterprise learning. At the examined school, enterprise mathematics has been introduced during the spring term of 2010. This examination focuses on which of the enterprise competences that are developed and how they are developed. It also investigates whether the desire to learn is increased as a result of the new pedagogic concept. The empiric material has been gathered through interviews with students and teachers, as well as through observation. The result shows unambiguously that the students, above all develops responsibility, but also other enterprise competences. Students that experience mathematics as either easy or difficult are the ones who seem to appreciate these changes mostly in their learning processes.

    Abstract [en]

The terms”inclusion” and” a school for all” are closely connected. The question schools can ask themselves is how they choose to create inclusion and a school for all and also in what perspective. The purpose with this study was to find out how the headmasters and the teachers at “Blommans skola” reasoned about the definition “inclusion”. In order to fulfill the purpose I used the following questions: How do the teachers reason around the two definitions “inclusion” and “a school for all” and how does this school include children with special needs?

I chose to work with a qualitative research method and I performed interviews based on an interview guide. The empirical material I gathered was divided into themes in order to analyze how the participants in the study had concluded the central definition inclusion to individualization, pupils with special needs, a school for all and interest and motivation.  The result of my research show that the informants define inclusion as having the same human value regardless and include everyone accordingly even the ones at the moment not present in the classroom. My material shows that it is the segregated integration that dominates the education situations and that the informants think that it is necessary in order to individualize learning. The informants think it is not excluding to have the pupil attend the school best fitted for the individual needs. My conclusion is that “a school for all” needs to be individually laid out, no matter what special needs are required, since all of us have a different way of learning.

    Abstract [en]

School and education are topics that are frequent in Swedish media. The intention of this essay has therefore been to investigate the image of teachers and their profession in Swedish daily press. The overall aim has been to analyze how teachers are portrayed in the debate that followed the TV-show Klass 9A, and by that find how the debate defines the concept of a good teacher. The representation that was found was then compared to earlier studies. The series was shown on Swedish television between January and March 2011.26 articles were chosen and the ambition was to have various perspectives represented, such as different voices and also papers from different areas of the country. To define categories in the debate and to find patterns in how the writers discuss the tv-programme, the teachers and the Swedish school system, the method qualitative analysis of content was chosen. As a theoretical framework the dissertation Kunskapens fanbärare has been useful to see if there have been any changes in the constructions of good teachers in the discourse since the 1990's.The investigation shows that the Swedish school still is presented as a school in a deep crisis, and to change this, three factors needs to improve: the teachers need to be more engaging, the teachers education needs to be of higher quality, and the conditions for working teachers has to improve. The conclusions also maintain that there has been a displacement of how the concept of the good teacher is described in daily press, from a more subject orientated teacher, almost an expert, to a more pedagogical teacher who is interested in creating good relations with the students. The most frequent terms that are used in the empirical material to describe the good teacher are foremost enthusiasm and inspiration..

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine how teachers comprehend LUS as a development program, but also how they think about one of the points in the program. The study is based on interviews with five teachers working with ages between preschool to ninth grade.

The results show that the development program is splendid, it doesn’t come with a lot of paperwork and it has a humanistic approach. When it comes to point 18a which is the main examination, the teachers mainly agree with each other. They all talk about preunderstanding, reading speed and the amount of literature as the main characteristics to be placed at point 18a. Some of the teachers would never place a student at point 18a even if they had these three characteristics, just because they haven’t got the right age.

In my essay, we get to meet Olle who goes in first class. The essay takes off after school and when recreational activities have started. Olle comes running towards me to ask for help, he has gotten into trouble with three classmates and he feels unfairly treated. A true classic or normal event, which I think takes place in most schools. What I am interested in examining is how my feelings affect the whole course of events in the conflict arising. What emotions do I show my surroundings and what are the consequences of them.

My essay addresses not only the professionals and teachers but also the staff of the school administration and everyone else who works in school. My purpose in this essay is to illustrate how important the hospitality is in a school and after-school activities. How we act towards children and colleagues is essential if the business will work in a satisfying way. To act wisely requires knowledge and that is the headline in my essay. How do you act wisely? What qualities have those who possess this wisdom? These are some of the questions I will raise in my essay and explore. I want to show that knowledge is so much more than math and spelling. A knowledge that takes in ethical values and that strives for human welfare must be a priority.

Kommunikationsfärdigheter hos förskolebarn: Funktion, kontext och kommunikativa handlingar i samspel2010Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (yrkesexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

According to international and national literacy studies (PISA, PIRLS) Swedish boys are inferior to Swedish girls when it comes to reading. There can be numerous reasons to that statement. One is that Swedish teachers require more knowledge about communication as an important component in literacy. In spite of this shortcoming, Swedish girls manage to gain sufficient literacy. Why is that? The aim of this survey was to examine if there were any differences between girls and boys regarding communication skills when they begin in school.

The main questions taken in account were:

    • Which differences and/or similarities in communication skills are discernible between boys and girls this particular preschool?
    • How do boys and girls communicate with each other in different room contexts on this particular preschool?

To be able to answer the questions, I adopted observations and audio recordings from children aged five. I recorded the everyday talk among the children in order to ascertain their communication skills. I´ve tried to demonstrate that communication skills are more than just a function. The context in which the children interact with each other and with the pedagogues, along with communication expectations common in the society, is important to take in account when examine communication skills. My conclusion is that due to expectations about boys being none- speakers and girls being speakers, the children gain different communication skills. Boys and girls then use their dissimilar skills separate from each others. Boys tend to play far from the girls and the teachers, girls play with each other near the teachers. The separate contexts the children select to play within also provide different communication skills. Girls practise their, already better, skills among the pedagogues, who help them develop even more. Boys are denied such help from the pedagogues since they choose not to play with them. This might be one of many reasons why boys more frequently fail as readers.

    Abstract [en]

One of the most important goals of school is to teach children how to read and write. But there are also children with great problems in reading and writing/dyslexia at school. In the Swedish School Plan you can, for example, read that one of the school’s most important goals is to give these children with special needs the help that they need.

This study will investigate how six young people with reading and writing problems/dyslexia experienced the first nine years at school. There has been very little research regarding students´ experiences of having reading and writing problems/dyslexia early in school, which is strange because school is a place where children spend most of their time. This study will raise the questions about how young people were treated by their teachers, what they think of having a diagnosis, what kind of individualization they received and how they think about continuing their education. To fulfil the study’s purpose I did six qualitative interviews with young people between the ages of 18 and 24 years. The primary theoretical basis in this study was identity formation, inclusion, exclusion and integration. The results show, for example, that five out of the six young people sometimes experienced that their teachers didn’t understand their writing and reading problems and that resulted in inappropriate treatment from the teachers. The young people could feel anxiety which often led to low self-confidence. The diagnosis was difficult for three of them, but none of the interviewed felt that the diagnosis had affected them. The results also show that a good individualization was difficult for the teachers to accomplish in practice, and it also showed that previous experiences in school perhaps influenced whether they chose to continue their studies or not. One of the conclusions is that it is very important to discover a child’s reading and writing problem at an early age and to give the child a lot of help. Otherwise the child can develop a low self-esteem, and it is negative for a child’s identity formation.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is intended to respond to the extent to which South African textbooks on the subject of history is linked to the governmental policy documents and whether they are producing and reproducing national identity. The two textbooks are aimed at students in grade 10. Both books were produced in 2008 but published by different publishers.

The essay is based on Norman Faircloughs critical discourse theory which has been supplemented by Michael Billings theory Banal Nationalism, which assumes that it is the national words that remind us daily of our homeland that is producing and reproducing national identity.

The survey shows that both textbooks are closely tied to the government policy document for the teaching of history. The textbooks refer to the policy, both explicitly and implicitly. The two textbooks reproduce a common national identity in South Africa based on the discussions taking place in society. In other words, the textbooks have been influenced by Rainbowism and African Renaissance. The books lift up both the idea of a reconciled South Africa and a proud nation in the continent of Africa. The texts and exercises in the books contribute to the production of national identity by reminding students that they can be proud to be South African in a unique multicultural nation. The analysis also shows that the textbooks strive to include all people in the national community regardless of ethnicity.

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss education as a state tool in Sweden during the 17th and 18th century. The idea is to contrast the pragmatics of the Swedish education system with the theories of Rousseau and Comenius. The thesis is marked by the thought that theory and application diverse because of the subversive infusion in the ideas of the theoretic.

The results shows that it is ultimately a question of public education and its potential. The state recognises the potential of public education but also its dangers and therefore becomes very active in forming not only the education system as a hole but also its pedagogic.

    Abstract [en]

The title of the paper aims at a comment by one of the students during an interview. It reflects how most of the students experience the lunches in a specific school where the investigation is made. The question of pedagogical lunches has always interested me. Here I have used a method called the Grounded theory. I carried out a qualitative investigation with a number of methods such as interviews and participating observations. As the work progressed certain conceptions grew more clear than others so I penetrated those more: pedagogic, conversation, nutritious food and environment. On bases of these connections a theory was brought up as to what a pedagogical lunch means to selected pedagogues and students in the investigated school. Theory: The pedagogues in this examination work are of the opinion that a pedagogic lunch means whether they are present at the tables eating and most of them consider this a privilege, eat is cheaper. The students prefer pedagogues to be present as then there is less talk at the tables. The deliberative conversation does not exist. On the other hand there are conversations going on which mostly deal with bringing up, unless the students choose a topic. As a pedagogue you do not lay great stress upon nutritional food but do point out the importance of tasting everything. The students are most concentrated on not throwing away food as right now there is a competition going on. Conversations regarding the environment are dominated by the sound level; the pedagogues are trying to deaden sounds in order to obtain a peaceful environment while most of the students are not affected by the sound level.

Subject: The Teacher Training Programme, Degree Project in Educational Sciences

    Södertörn University College

    Autumn Term, 2006

This study titled, Those who feel worst, need help to feel better, is a Degree Project in Educational Sciences for the Teacher Training Programme at Södertörn University College. The purpose of this study is to find out how school introduction for newly arrived refugee children is organized in two schools, considering the fact that many refugee children can suffer from PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The study is qualitative, based on interviews with principals, teachers and students in one junior high school and one high school. The study also reviews literature and research on how to work with children who suffer from PTSD. The results show that lack of national policy for the school introduction and education of refugee children, leads to the fact that school introduction can vary from school to school. The lack of co-operation between the different units around the refugee child makes the school introduction much more difficult than it needs to be. But this is also a matter of resources, and how they are divided. Thus, many of the children in this study seemed to be happy with their time in the preparatory class. The results also show that problems occurred when the children started in their new class, where they had difficulties in catching up with their new classmates.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to use qualitative approaches to show how four preschool teachers experienced their start in the profession as a preschool teacher. The questions in the stydy were as follows: What kind of expectations did the preshool teachers have before the start in the profession? What did the preshool teachers experience as difficulty and opportunity at the start in the profession? How do they think now about their professional development during the early period in the profession? The empirical material, I got through a qualitative interview method. My theoretical starting point was to take the hermeneutic research perspective, aimed for interpreting and understanding. Theories of Socialization and socialization for teachers, socio-cultural theories and theories of tacit knowledge have been used to analyze the material. The material has also been compared and analyzed against previous research on teachers first years in the profession and the research on preschool reachers start in the profession. The results show that three of the interviewed preschool teachers felt they have the support of colleagues during the start of their profession. Preschool teachers experienced various phenomena as difficulties during their professional start, but they stated that they experienced the same phenomenon as an opportunity in the start of the profession. These phenomena were the interactions with the children and the support they felt by their colleagues. Furthermore, the preschool teachers felt at home in the profession after approximately one year.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate teachers’ efforts to teach students with dyslexia in Swedish. The intention with this study is to get the right tools to work with these kinds of students in a more improved and giving way in the future. My questions of issue are:

    - How can teachers facilitate the learning process for students with dyslexia?

    - Are pupils with dyslexia included in the teachers’ education in the classroom?

    - How do the other pupils integrate with the dyslexia pupils in the classroom?

    - How does the teacher manage the situation to teach the whole class at the same time as he/she helps the pupils with dyslexia?

    - How do you practice when to assess and rate the students with dyslexia?

The method used in this paper is a combination of participant observation and interviews with two teachers and their classes. To be able to construe my results in this paper, I will be using Peder Haugs theory including integration and segregate integration but also a theory based on including or excluding way of working.

The main conclusion of this paper is that teachers can work in many different ways with dyslectic pupils. The teachers must try to find a way that is right for themself and their pupils, there is no right and wrong in this work. But what’s most important is to help the dyslectic cope with school.

    Abstract [en]

According to some researchers, dyscalculia is at least as prevalent as dyslexia. Somewhere between 3.6-6 % of all pupils have specific mathematics difficulties named dyslexia. If this be true, it should present the most complex special education predicament by far in schools today. Despite the statistics, dyscalculia is still a rather unknown concept.

The cause of dyscalculia is not yet fully analyzed. There are several theories and many researchers see similarities between dyscalculia and the special educational problem of reading and writing, dyslexia. The most important factor for pupils to be able to develop mathematical skills is adequate assistance at the earliest possible stage. It is probable that this adequate assistance is achieved if the pupil is diagnosed with dyscalculia and therefore gets access to a special educational resources.

In this essay, I want to analyze the concept of dyscalculia and how recognized it is today. To this end, I have undertaken several interviews with the objective of seeing how educationalists relate to dyscalculia. In order to see how the diagnosis is performed, and what it means to be diagnosed, I have followed the work process from a pupil suspected of having dyscalculia to a possible diagnosis. I have also personally undergone a dyscalculia investigation at an authorized speech therapist in order to achieve a profound insight into the diagnosis process.

My study shows that the concept of dyscalculia is not widely recognized, but that the knowledge around dyscalculia is increasing. Research is currently undertaken in the field even though it is not to the same extent as dyslexia.

    Abstract [en]

Many researches have been done about the difficulties in teaching children with disabilities and like in this case dyslexia, which is the disability my essay is focused on. Earlier researches have investigated how and what teachers do practically when they have pupils with dyslexia and what help they have in their work. I wanted to investigate how the theories in National Compulsory School Curriculum (Lpo94) and about inclusive education in relation to the actual work in one Swedish school. My essay, with help of other research, has taken the expression “school for all” and it’s meaning to what is possible to do in a real life work situation, with the assignments that schools have in Lpo94. The result from my research on this Swedish school in Stockholm region is that they have a somewhat impossible goal to achieve, if the School system wants to be a “school for all” and at the same time fulfil their obligations in Lpo94 about an inclusive education and at the same time notice and offer alternative education to the ordinary if necessary.

    Abstract [en]

The study aims to investigate student’s attitudes and experiences of information retrieval on the Internet, as tools for learning. I have been interested of their own views about their own knowledge and experience in the subject, information seeking on the Internet. The focus is on what they perceive as problematic, what skills they consider they have and what needs they have in terms of teaching. Data were collected via questionnaires. About 200 students at the second year in high school have been asked about the problems and difficulties they have within seeking on the Internet. The study is especially framed within a sociocultural perspective of learning. The study aims to answer following questions:

Do the students think that they, in a concentrated way, can orient themselves and seek information on the Internet? Do the students think that they had received education in information seeking on the Internet? Do the students think that they need more skills in information seeking on the Internet?

The result shows that this millennial generation see themselves as competent users of the Internet, the World Wide Web (www). Young people are attracted by working with the computer as tool for learning, while teachers may feel that the boundary between school and leisure time is small. The students have a sense of success in every moment of internet seeking. Pupils and teachers have different skills on the Internet. This applies to teachers gain knowledge of it and how to teach the skills students need. Since the computer is a common tool in our workplaces in the community, is it important for the school to prepare the students for the future. It is important for all educators in the school, individually and jointly to reflect on the information that will contribute to the student's own knowledge creation and in what way.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to show how or if teachers use different methods working with minority language students, who don’t speak Swedish in lower primary school. By using different socio-cultural perspectives I want to show that learning for both students and teachers is contextual and socially connected and how practical knowledge is significant for many teachers.

My working method of this essay is made in a qualitative form by interviews with four preschool teachers. By these interviews I hope to find account for how teachers with or without experience work with immigrant children.

The result of my survey shows that perceived experience is significant to most of my informants, which is what deficient in their work with non-Swedish speaking children.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to examine how gender roles are described in two children's books and compare the results against the curriculum Lgr11 's values. The compared books have different aims though one of the analyzed books claimed to go against the gender roles and the other one isn’t. The method of analysis is discourse analysis and deconstruction of the text by using Nikolajeva´s (2004) pattern for stereotype gender descriptions and Kåreland´s (2005) analysis of story actions based on gender representations in children's literature. The analysis of the texts shows that there are differences between how the two books characters are described depending on gender. What emerges is that in one of the books femininity is valued high but instead it lacks equality between the sexes, while in the second book the main characters are described as equal even though the other characters are described in a stereotypical way.  The conclusion will be that if one gender role is challenged another  gender role is growing strong which means that gender representation in the books are both following and going against the curriculum Lgr 11.

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this C-essay is to answer the question: What have been the consequences and effects of the merit point system on language studies and the parties concerned (teachers, students and principals) during the school year of 2010/11?

The merit point system is the result of a political decision and was implicated for the first time in the Swedish upper secondary school during the school year 2010/2011. Being a completely new phenomenon it is of great interest and importance to study its effects.

The study in this essay also aims to verify, falsify or nullify two hypotheses very often referred to in the political discussions regarding the merit point system:

    1. The merit point system will replace affection and interest as main reasons for language studies in upper secondary school and cause a rectification amongst the students choices of additional courses.
    2. The merit point system will have a segregating effect upon society and make it harder for people to rise in society through education in the future.

A verification of these hypotheses would imply the appearance of an increased rectification amongst students as well as an orientation towards an in the future more segregated society.

The empiric material has been collected and examined with qualitative as well as quantitative methods (questionnaires and interviews) and belongs epistemologically to the phenomenological and hermeneutical traditions.

    Abstract [sv]

    • Beskriv händelsen i ord.

    Abstract [en]

This study of Swedish history books for grade 9 will examine and compare what the books say about The Holocaust and how it is presented. I analyse how the books present The Holocaust and how it is portrayed. I use questions to evaluate the content of the texts and thereafter I compare them to each other. My hypothesis is that history books are affected by the society in which they are written. Therefore I think that comparing books from different years, I will be able to see a difference between the books when it comes to the way they choose to present The Holocaust. In my study I discover that there are differences between the books and that many times the books that are more recently written presents The Holocaust in a more balanced way. But I also discover that to come to any further conclusions about if more recently written textbooks are better than older because of these differences, a much more extensive study is needed.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of my study has been to find out how mother tongue teachers working in preschools where a majority of the children have a mother tongue other than Swedish make use of fictional children’s books during the mother tongue support lessons. In order to determine this, I am asking the following questions:

    • - What is the range of children's books in the children's mother tongue available at the preschool?
    • - In what ways are the native language teachers encouraging literacy development through the usage of children's books?
    • - How do native language teachers view the childrens’ linguistic development as well as the enhancement of cultural identity through the usage of the books?

These questions have formed the basis of the methodical approach, which is based on a qualitative research method. The data collection consists of three parts; the observation of mother tongue support, interviews with language teachers as well as with the nursery manager and lastly a survey of children's books in languages other than Swedish at the preschool.

The essay has as its theoretical basis the socio-cultural view of learning and development. Previous research is composed of studies showing that children with a mother tongue different from that of the majority population should be supported in the development of their native language for several reasons, including for the development of the Swedish language and for the enhancement of cultural identity. Also referred to is research which suggests that reading aloud and conversations about books is important for children's language development and future success in reading and writing activities.

The results show that the range of children's books written in the mother tongue of the children which are available at the preschool is small. However, the language teachers' work with children’s books in the native languages has a prominent place in the native language support. By reading aloud, through conversation and interaction with the books, the children are given the opportunity to obtain many of the skills required for the future development of reading and writing skills. Moreover, the results show that native language teachers consciously involve the children's cultural and linguistic backgrounds in the native language education through the usage of books concerning the minority group's traditions and other specific phenomena related to the children and the cultural background of their family However, reading aloud in the mother tongue sometimes has to give way to other activities and the mother tongue education suffers when staff are absent. The conclusion I can draw from these results is that knowledge of the language support exists but that this knowledge must be connected and realized in the preschool environment.
