Printed media for Russophone diaspora: typological models2017In: Migration and Communication Flows: Rethinking borders, conflict and identity through the digital, 2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In eighty countries of the world (excluding Russia), there are produced around 3,5 thousand media in Russian language for 30 million Russian speakers (Astafyev 2012). Russophone diaspora is specific, as it has a multilayered (different waves of migration) and multiethnic character (see Pivovar 2008, 2010). The printed media of the three first waves of the Russian emigration are thoroughly studied (e.g., Bogomolov 1994, 2004; Esin 2003; Mikhalev 2009; Suomela 2014; Zhirkov 2003). There are as well several studies on the online space of the “Russian abroad” (e.g., Morgunova 2014; Reut and Teterevleva 2014). Yet, the currently existing printed Russian-language media remain somewhat of a blind spot on the map of the diaspora studies and media studies alike, despite the scale of this media segment.

This study focuses on the printed media segment of the Russophone media abroad. The study is based on a twelve-year long monitoring of Russian-language press that consisted of a basic content analysis of 65 printed media and survey of 64 journalists working for 50 outlets. The materials were collected during the trainings for these journalists organized by the Universal Association of Russian Press (VARP) and Faculty of Journalism, Moscow State University.

The study maps the space of the Russian-language press abroad, describes the tendencies characteristic for it, and highlights the typological models within this segment. On the one hand, the Russian-language media abroad are influenced by global processes, which lead to their commercialization, standardization, concentration and integration with non-established media online. On the other hand, these media are oriented at specific audiences, united by the language and culture. The current challenges of these media are related to the political events (such as Ukrainian conflict), as well as the broader problem of self-identification of the Russophone diaspora.

Broadcasting Against the Grain: The Contradictory Roles of RT in a Global Media Age2019In: Transnational Media: Concepts and Cases / [ed] Kern-Stone, Rebecca & Mishra, Suman, Hoboken, NJ: Wiley-Blackwell, 2019, p. 207-213Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

RT (formerly Russia Today) is a transnational television news broadcaster launched in 2005 by the Russian government. It is one of the most controversial global news actors, often associated with misinformation, propaganda and fake news. In this capacity, the channel can also be seen as an instance of an increasingly pluralized global information space where traditional legacy media meet competition by alternative news outlets. This chapter takes a broad grip on RT and delves into its roles and objectives as it has been addressed by media scholars, NGOs, other news media institutions and not least RT itself. We begin by discussing RT’s activities and competitors on the global news market, after which we discuss these activities from the perspectives of soft power, public diplomacy, propaganda and nation branding. The chapter ends with concluding remarks and suggestions for future research in this area.

Challenges of ongoing conflict research: Transdisciplinary ethnography in post-2014 Ukraine2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The transdisciplinary collaborative project “Propaganda and management of information in the Ukraine-Russia conflict” that the authors are a part of, focuses on the Ukrainian media and uses ethnography as its primary methodology. We have been interviewing various actors involved in production of information flows in the post-2014 Ukraine: journalists, media and security experts, historians, PR-managers etc. What most of the informants pointed to was the recent shift in their perception of their role in the changes that the country is going through: they highlight their roles as activists and change agents in the society. Coming from different research fields (history and media and communication studies), we have been reflecting upon the tension between our striving at academic neutrality and the different disciplinary approaches, as well as unavoidable emotional involvement in the subject we scrutinize.

The paper is based on auto-ethnography wherein we reflect on the challenges the researchers face when conducting ethnographic research on activists and dealing with such sensitive issues as information warfare and armed conflict. This becomes especially problematic when scholars come from the countries involved in the conflict, Ukraine and Russia. How do our feelings of guilt, shame, anger, affection, attachment, love, interact with our professional goals and with our dealing with the material? How do they influence our interaction with the informants and each other? And how can we empower our informants, while remaining in the framework of academic research?

This analysis contributes to the ethnographic studies on crisis and post-crisis societies. It continues the discussion about the role of emotions in ethnographic research, where we compare our experiences of ethical dilemmas, inspired by, e.g., Hoffmann (2007). Although this issue, in the context of Ukraine, has been partly addressed (e.g., Malyutina 2017),such an auto-ethnographic, self-reflexive work is rare in the Western scholarship that largely applies quantitative methods and focuses on the content, not people’s experiences.

Russian-language media space: features, tendencies and typology2017In: IAMCR 2017: Diaspora and Media Working Group, Abstracts of papers presented at the annual conference of the International Association for Media and Communication Research, IAMCR Cartagena, Colombia 16-20 July 2017, 2017, article id 15625Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There are more than 30 million Russian speakers living outside of the current borders of the Russian Federation. “Russian abroad” can partly be viewed as diaspora (e.g. Cohen 1997, Hoyle 2013, Safran 1991, Sheffer 2003, Vertovec 1999) and partly as a cultural macro-social group. Its specificity is its multilayered (different waves of migration) and multiethnic character (see Pivovar 2008, 2010). “Russian abroad” consists of two groups: Russian migrants who left the country in different periods and their descendants, and Russian-speakers who found themselves abroad after the collapse of the USSR. In eighty countries of the world, there are published around 3.5 thousand media in Russian language. Yet, the currently existing printed Russian-language media, their role, political orientation, functions, professional views of the journalists, diapason of influence, audiences - remain somewhat of a blind spot on the map of the diaspora studies and media studies alike, despite the scale of this media segment. Empirical studies of these media are challenged by the fact that not all of these media have their online versions and absence of a common catalogue (see O. Voronova 2016). The existing studies are either country-based or focus on the linguistic aspects exclusively. This study focuses on the printed media segment and suggests a typology of the Russian-language press abroad. On the other hand, these media are oriented at specific audiences, united by the Russian language, culture, traditions; for the post-Soviet countries – by the common experience of living in the same state. These media have features of both global and national media, as their audiences are influenced by at least two cultures. Being spread in the world, these media have the same language, similar functions and, often, a common agenda. The current challenges of these media are related to the political events (such as Ukrainian conflict), as well as the broader problem of self-identification of the Russian-language diaspora. The study suggests viewing the Russian-language media abroad as a cultural phenomenon that should be analyzed in dynamics and in the context of the geopolitical changes and challenges.

Fighting climate change starts with journalists: An analysis of the news coverage of the annual United Nations climate summits by the BBC online between 2008 and 20182019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Climate change is one of the biggest threats the world is currently facing and it seems that people are able to significantly influence this threat. In order for people to understand the urgency of fighting climate change it is important that they are well informed and that they understand how their actions can matter. In this research, a quantitative content analysis with a discourse analytical approach is used to analyze a selection of articles by the BBC online covering the annual United Nations climate summits between 2008 and 2018 with a focus on their usage of constructive elements. The amount of negative statements in the articles is as big as the positive and hopeful statements together and in most cases the articles lack background information. Although the BBC uses many different perspectives in their articles, there is a lot of room to improve their articles by including more constructive elements. They could provide more background information to issues, quotes, and statements used in their articles and rather than only stating existing and possible problems they could include more solutions and focus more on the future.

Long-term health consequences following the siege of Leningrad2013In: Early life nutrition and adult health and development: lessons from changing dietary patterns, famines and experimental studies / [ed] L.H. Lumey and Alexander Vaiserman, New York: Nova Science Publishers, Inc., 2013, p. 207-225Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We are interested in the long-term health consequences associated with severe starvation and war trauma, and whether certain "age windows" exist when exposure to such events are particularly harmful. The siege of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) during World War II provided an opportunity to study this. For 872 days, German troops prevented supplies from reaching Leningrad. Simultaneously, there was a food blockade and a steady and merciless bombardment by shells from guns and from the air. The first winter, 1941/42, represents the most severe food shortage, amounting to mass starvation or semi-starvation. Our late colleague, Professor Dimitri Shestov, had suffered the consequences of the Leningrad siege as a boy and believed that it had taken a toll on people beyond its immediate short- and medium-range consequences. He was particularly concerned about its long-term consequences for circulatory disease. A 1973 US-Soviet agreement, the socalled Lipid Research Clinics Collaboration, gave him an opportunity to study this. From 1975 to 1982 men and women living in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) were randomly sampled and invited to examine their health and cardiovascular functioning. Dimitri Shestov added a simple question to this examination: "Were you in Leningrad during the blockade?" A third of the participants were. They had experienced peak starvation (in January 1942) at ages 1-31 (women) or 6-26 (men). The mortality follow-up began immediately after the first clinical examinations in 1975 and continued for three decades, until the end of 2005. Our analyses show that the siege of Leningrad, particularly when experienced in puberty, has had long-term effects on blood pressure both in men and women. We also found a raised IHD and stroke risk among those men. This was partly mediated via blood pressure but not by any other measured biological, behavioral, or social factors.Girls experiencing the siege around puberty suffered an elevated risk of dying from breast cancer later in life. The fact that the effect of siege exposure is modified by the age at exposure is highly interesting from a scientific point of view. It may suggest that a reprogramming of physiological systems can occur at specific age windows in response to starvation and/or war trauma. The team that worked from 1975-2005 to collect clinical information and death certificates for participants in the study included Svetlana Plavinskaya, born in Leningrad during the siege. Dimitri Shestov and Svetlana Plavinskaya died in 2010 and 2011, respectively. We dedicate this chapter to their memory.

Den stora världen i det lilla landet: En kvantitativ undersökning av 2013 års utrikesrapportering i Svenska Dagbladet och Södermanlands Nyheter2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Over the decades, Airbus and Boeing, the two major players in aerospace industry have been at loggerheads for aircraft orders. The newest models in production by the two world's leaders represent their competitive views of the future of the industry. Functional product differentiation is exactly what rivalry between the Superjumbo A380 and the 787 Dreamliner is all about. Two companies with fundamentally different products, based on diametrically opposite visions of the future, engaged in a Hatfields versus McCoys battle with billions of dollars at stake. It seems the two firms are accenting two niche markets with a pair of flagship products, neither of which are in direct competition with each other. This will allows for the firms to stave off price competition in the short term by differentiating product lines, which is desirable given recent increase in buyer power gained by low-cost airlines. The present paper will provide an in-depth comparison of the competition between Airbus and Boeing in a wide array of technological and market aspects. The aim of this analysis is to determine which company controls which markets and technologies, to consider each company´s current state of affairs, and to arrive at a general hypothesis concerning the fate of Airbus and Boeing in the near future. The research questions are - how the two competitors differ from each other, how they affect each other´s behavior and why there are only two of them. Based on the evidence presented henceforth, it seems likely that, despite Airbus´s current supremacy, Boeing will in the coming years hold a larger market share and exert more market power than Airbus.

Effects Of Banking Structure On Labour Market Performance: An Empirical Study2016In: Review of Business Research, ISSN 1546-2609, E-ISSN 2378-9670, Vol. 16, no 3, p. 73-82Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The effects of changes in banking structure on growth and its components have been the subject of a number of studies of a cross-country nature. However, empirical studies linking banking structure to the labor market have been scanty, and the theoretical contributions have been mostly at the individual firm level. In this paper, a sample of 35 developed and emerging market nations is used to investigate the impacts on the labor market, specifically on the unemployment rate, of changes in banking sector concentration. Recognizing that country-specific labor market institutional arrangements and profiles, such as the strength of unionism and employee protection legislation can interact with the financial variables to moderate or exacerbate the impact of structural changes in the banking industry, variables representing the extent of labor market rigidity or flexibility are also included in the analysis. Results indicate that more concentrated banking market structures could have an ameliorating effect on the unemployment rate, at least in very recent periods. Labor market institutional variables capturing difficulties in hiring and firing seems to have had an opposing impact to that of banking sector concentration in the case of industrialized nations, though the variable representing trade union density was found to be insignificant.

The Nordic model: a promise of prosperity for all?2017Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The Nordic countries top every survey on overall well-being and expressed happiness and satisfaction with living conditions and the environment, and, moreover, emerge on top even in measures of global competitiveness. This book unravels the unique economic and social processes by which these countries have achieved such universally acclaimed success. The authors note that the Nordic success has not been a sudden surge forward, and provide substance to the argument that conditions going back to feudal times, and unique societal relations and a social consensus allowing low power distances and smooth decentralization have played key roles in the Nordic transition into full-fledged knowledge economies. Indeed, as they note, “if there is a Valhalla for Nordic politicians, policy-makers and organization leaders, it will surely provide them an idyllic island under a mellow sun for holding amiable discussions, lowering their guards in a give-and-take spirit, on issues pertaining to the well-being of that Nordic paradise.”

"Show, don't tell": En studie om hur fastighetsmäklarföretag arbetar med digitala medier för att skapa långsiktiga relationer2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In recent years it has become apparent that the real estate market has turned its attention from traditional marketing strategies to promote itself through digital channels. Emerging alternative agencies have led to an increased competition on the real estate market. For traditional real estate firms to survive in the current market they have to apply digital strategies, while working to build closer relationships with potential customers to maintain customer satisfaction.

The aim of this thesis was to analyze which factors real estate firms finds central when they working with digital channels to reach out to customers. To investigate this we posed the following question: "Which factors are important for real estate firms to take into account when using digital channels to build relationships with potential customers?"

To answer this question we based our methods on established theories in relationship marketing and digital marketing. We performed a study based on a qualitative method through semistructured interviews with four real estate firms operating in the Stockholm area.

The main conclusion of the study was that it is very important to interact with consumers, as the power has shifted from the business to the consumers. At the same time, companies must mediate trust in during the transaction process and actively work with social media to manage the negative and positive criticism in an appropriate manner. Finally, the study showed that even though we have seen big efforts in digitalization of the real estate market, the real estate agent still has a significant role to play in customer relations as the primary customer interaction is still mediated by them.

Operationell leasing:  Vad är det stora bolag egentligen betalar för?2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Foundation stones in the resource mobilization theory of social movements are the notions of "conscience adherents" and "conscience constituents," first introduced by McCarthy and Zald in 1977. In this article, we revisit the concept of conscience adherent, by applying it to individuals and groups that are direct supporters of an LGBT movement, but who do not stand to directly benefit from the success should the movement accomplish its goals. Using quantitative data collected during Pride parades in Stockholm, Haarlem, London, and Warsaw, we analyze the group of participants who reported that they were lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender and compare them to heterosexual and gender-conforming participants, identifying factors that explain why people in the latter category participate in Pride parades. We argue that experiences of discrimination, knowing people from the beneficiary group, and/or subscribing to general principles of justice, contribute to conscience adherent participation. Furthermore, based on interviews with Pride parade organizers, we argue that mobilizations based on a more inclusive political strategy will attract more non-LGBT participants.

Alone in the crowd: Lone protesters in Western European demonstrations2014In: International Sociology, ISSN 0268-5809, E-ISSN 1461-7242, Vol. 29, no 6, p. 565-583Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

While corroborating the fact that the majority of protesters attend demonstrations together with friends, family and/or fellow members of their organizations, this article shows that protesting alone remains an option for many people – under the right circumstances. Through multilevel analysis of survey data from participants in 69 demonstrations in eight Western European countries, the authors study lone protesters in different types of demonstrations. On the individual level, they show that protesting alone is closely linked to relative detachment from interpersonal mobilizing networks, as well as to short decision times. The authors also develop demonstration-level explanations for why lone protesters are more common in some demonstrations than in others. Precipitating events and inclusive social movement communities increase the proportion of lone demonstrators, which is also higher in static rallies than in moving demonstrations. These factors arguably make personal networks less crucial for protest mobilization.

Methods for studying May Day demonstrators: Sampling, estimating non-response bias and pooling data with general population surveys2016In: The Ritual of May Day in Western Europe: Past, Present and Future / [ed] Abby Peterson & Herbert Reiter, Abingdon, Oxon: Routledge, 2016, p. 262-278Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter concerns some methodological aspects of protest surveys and data analysis. We start by providing an overview of the demonstrations we surveyed, describe the protest survey sampling method and proceed to an analysis of non-response bias. Thereafter we discuss how we combine the data from different demonstrations into averages, and we also discuss some of the more technical aspects of coding.

Framing “The Climate Issue”: Patterns of Participation and Prognostic Frames among Climate Summit Protesters2013In: Global Environmental Politics, ISSN 1526-3800, E-ISSN 1536-0091, Vol. 13, no 4, p. 101-122Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Did the protests surrounding recent climate summits mark the emergence of a climate justice movement? We analyze responses to surveys of three large demonstrations in Copenhagen, Brussels, and London, organized in connection with the 2009 UN Climate Change Conference (COP-15) to determine who demonstrated, and how and why the collective action frames employed by demonstrators varied. The demonstrations were products of the mobilization of broad coalitions of groups, and we find significant variation in demonstrators' prognostic framings—the ways in which they formulated solutions to climate problems. Most notably, there was a tension between system-critical framings and those oriented around individual action. A large proportion of demonstrators expressed affinity with the global justice movement (GJM), but we find little evidence of an emerging “climate justice” frame among rank-and-file protesters. Individual variations in framing reflect differences between the mobilization contexts of the three demonstrations, the perspectives and values of individual participants, and the extent of their identification with the GJM.

IFRS 15 - ett år efter införandet: En kvantitativ undersökning om hur implementeringen av IFRS 15 har påverkat företags finansiella rapporter utifrån ett branschorienterat perspektiv2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Revenue recognition has been a debated issue for a long time. During the 1990s and 2000s, several critical revenue related events took place. These events led to the development of a new standard for revenues called IFRS 15"Revenue from contracts with customers". One year has passed since the adoption in Swedish law and the aftermaths are available for analysis. The implementation of IFRS 15 is expected to affect the revenue reporting and the disclosure requirements referred to them. However, this change is not expected to affect all industries the same way but will likely depend on business model used.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to illustrate how revenue recognition has been affected by the implementation of IFRS 15 from an industry perspective as well as increase understanding of why some industries are affected and others not.

Method:IFRS 15 has one single model for all revenuearising from contracts with customers and the standard also includes expanded disclosure requirements. The first approach examines how net sales change in companies when implementing IFRS 15. The reason for this is to determine if the standard has had anyeffect on the company's sales revenue. The second approach in the study is to examine the companies segment reporting to determine whether the implementation have had an effect on the company's financial report, based on the expanded disclosure requirements. Some industries are expected to be affected more than others which is why both approaches are examined from an industry-oriented perspective.

Results: Customer serviceand telecom are the two industries that have the most affected net sales in connection with the implementation of IFRS 15. The two industries that showed the biggest impact on changed segment reporting are industrial and health care. Oil and gas and utilities reported no impact on net sales or changed segment reporting.

Delad föräldraledighet?: en fråga om bådas ansvar2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Kvinnliga kvinnor och manliga män?: En analys av normer i EUs jämställdhetsstrategier2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay is a bachelor’s thesis in the field of International Relations. The purpose is to make visible and analyse how problem representations in policies can reproduce norms, and how this has changed over a limited period of time. The purpose includes the ambition to be able to illustrate deficiencies in the European Union’s policies on gender equality. The essay intends to analyse the representations and norms in terms of a gender system. The theoretical framework consists of theories on normalization and gender system. The method used is called "What’s the problem?" developed by Carol Lee Bacchi. To achieve gender equality the EU produces policies on gender mainstreaming, this study analyses three of these policy documents. The result of the analysis shows that there has been no major change in the representation of problems in the documents and that they are reproducing stereotypical norms. The result also shows that the representations of problems are possible to explain with the theory on gender system, which allows further studies to develop a well-grounded critique of the EU policies.

Hungriga vargar jagar bäst: En deskriptiv studie om belöningar som motivationsfaktor2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To examine how rewards affect employee motivation and performance. The study also examines how rewards affect individual well-being and company growth.

Theory: The theoretical framework applied in the study is intended to answer the research questions and purpose of the study. Theories that have been used are Principal-Agent theory, Stewardship Theory, Scientific Management, theories about motivation and reward system theories.

Methodology: A cross-sectional design with deductive approach has been applied. Primary data are taken from a quantitative survey from an employee perspective and interviews from a management perspective. The quantitative data are analyzed using a hypothesis testing.

Results: The results showed that the fixed monthly salaries was the most common rewards of use, followed by other monetary rewards such as retirement and wellness programs. The rewards that was considered to be the biggest motivation factor was bonus followed by fixed salaries. Employee performance determines how well the company is going to perform.

Analysis: The reward system must be properly designed to foster the company's objectives and the management need to be aware of in what way employees want to be rewarded. This will reduce the agency costs and the employees will work in the company's interest.

Conclusion: The purpose of the award is to motivate employees to perform in the interest of the company. The reward system should be well designed and it is important to understand what motivates employees to maximize their performance. Rewards contribute to increase the individual performance wich also will intrease the company's overall performance.

Managementteknologier i harmoni eller i konflikt?: En studie av TQM & MBO samt deras översättning och influenser hos två utförare i beställar-utförarmodellen2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Intrusive and annoying ads have become increasingly common on the internet, which has led to that consumers have a more negative attitude to online ads. Thus, using softwares for blocking ads have lately become more common. This has led to reductions in advertising revenues for companies that use web-based marketing which have forced them to customize their ads to the consumers in order to keep the business profitable.

The aim of this paper is to examine what type of online ads that is used to reach out to internet users in a less intrusive way and to see their opinion about adblockers. From a consumer perspective the study examines the view of the consumer on this development and if they fulfil their purpose.

The thesis has a triangular approach with semi-structured interviews that is strengthened and compared with a quantitative questionnaire. The conclusion of the research have showed that native advertising is the most effective ad format to reach out to consumers in a more acceptable manner. At the same time more companies that are using online ads choose to introduce paywalls on their webpages where consumers on the internet are forced to deactivate their adblockers, to be denied the content or to pay to gain access to it.

God redovisningssed: En rättsfallstudie som behandlar intäktsredovisning2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Vilken betydelse har betygen?: En studie om rekryteringsprocessen hos bemanningsföretag2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Mind the gap: En studie om samarbetet mellan entreprenörer och affärsänglar2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today there are a number of different financing options but few of them are suitable for start-up companies. Business angels are in that case an exception and a suitable investor in these companies. Business angels are individuals who invest in young companies and differ from other financiers in the sense that the collaboration with the company is closer. Business angels are although few in numbers while the young companies often tend to be in most need of funding and has the greatest potential to grow.

The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the cooperation between entrepreneurs and business angels and to identify which effects the financial gap have on these financial associations.

Business angels and entrepreneurs collaboration are hard to interpret and therefore demanded a deeper examination. We thus used a qualitative method consisting of six different interviews in three different cases.

The study shows that established collaborations between entrepreneurs and business angel’s seem to be affected by the financial gap to a great extent, which has been expressed in negative consequences. The financial gaps effects on the cooperation mainly takes form in the initial assessment process where the contractors expressed difficulties in the search of funders due too the limited number of stakeholders. We have identified communication problems and grievances between the entrepreneurs and business angels in the form of wills and we see these problems as a result of the initial problem.

Bitcoin: A Seemingly Rampant Elevator, or is Someone Pushing its Buttons?: A Case Study on Bitcoin’s Fluctuations in Price and Concept2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study looks at the price mechanism of the digital quasi-currency bitcoin. Through statistical analysis of secondary data a probable significant results regarding correlation and regression between price and different independent variables have been established. The final analysis is pointing towards network effects being a part of the determinants for the crypto-currency’s price.

Complimentary to the quantitative study explained above, an implementation of hermeneutic analysis based on secondary theoretical sources, journalistic opinion and a professional qualified judgment has aided the author and study in conceptual understanding. This interpretation has semantic character, and takes a Socratic kickoff regarding the nature of bitcoin as a financial instrument. The analysis runs back and forth throughout the course of the study and finally intertwines with qualitative results in the discussion. It is the author’s impression that a significant dimorphism surrounds bitcoin, calling for a conceptual differentiation leading to practical rethinking.

The study takes the shape of a case-study conducted over four months. The author’s location during the process of writing was Stockholm Sweden, but the gathered data is of transnational character.

Marknadsföringsstrategier inom småföretag: Intuition eller taktiskt val?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Small businesses are the largest employers in Sweden and employ most people on the labour

market. Therefore they are considered one of the most important components for an economic

growth in a country. However small businesses have problems regarding profitability and

survival on the market. It is also considered hard to conduct business for smaller companies,

where the lack of restricted resources is a crucial factor.

The purpose of this study is to, through a producer perspective and with a qualitative

approach, review whether and in what way small businesses uses marketing strategies in their

planning. This will be done by answering the following research question:

“In what sense do small businesses implement marketing strategies in their work with

    marketing?”

The following conclusions were drawn from the study:

    • Small businesses implement marketing strategies in their everyday work in the sense

that almost all of the small businesses that participated in the study have thought about

the factors relating to the selection of target group and the company's own market

position in relation to its competitors

    • Small businesses formulate its marketing strategies mentally rather than having a

    formal written strategy.

    • Small businesses mainly choose to segment the market by using geographic and

    demographic factors.

    • Small businesses opt out the use of price leadership as their competitive strategy.

Instead small businesses try to stand out from their competitors in some unique way

and their focus lies on quality rather than quantity.

    • Small businesses are working diligently to retain existing customers because it is a

cheaper approach than trying to attract new customers.

    • Small businesses can benefit from being apart of a network with other active small,

but the study also shows that most benefits can be drawn from startups that not yet

enhold a solid knowledge about the market.

"En klients önkemål kan vara ett hinder i arbetet": en studie om individuella bedömningar inom socialtjänstens enhet för ekonomiskt bistånd2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This paper is a peer-review about social workers´ experiences and descriptions of making individual assessments of their unemployed clients when working toward self-sufficiency and eventual obstacle for making them. The paper also deals with how social workers prioritize their work tasks. The study was conducted through interviews with five social workers at the same workplace. The results have been analyzed using theories of discretion, street-level bureaucrats and client dimensions within a street-level bureaucracy. The result shows that lack of time and limitation of discretion have negative influences in the social workers’ ability to make individual assessments. The result also shows that individual assessments are foremost made when the clients mismanage their planning and are risking not getting their application for financial assistance approved. Further the results show that the processing of applications and payment of financial assistance is a priority task since it is considered to be most important to clients and result in the greatest consequences for both social workers and clients if not performed. The discussion that follows is about the possible consequences of prioritizing work tasks this way.

The Guardian2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Marketing has over the past decade undergone fundamental changes, and the digitalization has been a part of this development. Borden was the first to present the marketing mix as a concept in the 1950s. The concept consisted of twelve factors that marketing practitioners can use in developing their marketing strategy. McCarthy developed the concept further and defined the marketing mix as 4P; Product, Price, Promotion and Place. Kotler developed McCarthy’s 4P-model to one of the most used marketing models today. The 4P- model has not developed in the same rate as the digitalization, however it is still used by practitioners and researchers today. Furthermore, some researchers consider that the 4P-model is not essential for today's marketing and claims that it has limited the development of the discipline.

Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to investigate whether or not the digitalization has created a need to develop the traditional marketing mix.

Methodology: This paper applies a qualitative research method and uses a deductive approach to science. The primary data has been collected through semi-structured interviews, and later been analyzed and interpreted in relation to the secondary data.

Analysis and conclusions: The traditional marketing mix is today used as a simple and easy-to- understand basis for operationalization of marketing. Due to the digitalization practitioners do not apply the model based on its traditional design. The customer has a major role in today's marketing and the digitalization has created new ways for businesses to reach out and communicate with the customer. The B2C-relationship is more important today and necessary for businesses long-term growth. Finally, the paper presents a further developed a customer- oriented marketing mix model where the customer and the business are surrounded by customer offering, communication and relationships.

Proppen har gått: En analys av diskursen kring Kultursamverkansmodellen2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to map the ideas behind the Swedish cultural reform called Kultursamverkansmodellen, and how the ideas are forming a discourse. Furthermore it examines the social praxis on the three levels that constitutes the model. The three levels are the state, the region and culture creators/civil society. This is a qualitative study based on primary and secondary sources collected on the three levels. The theoretical frame of reference is based on institutional theory, on Michel Foucault‟s lecture on The Discourse of Language, and on New Public Management. When it comes to distribution of the official funds there has been no actual change after the reform, according to our empirical data. There may have been a change in terms of language and work methods. Our data also shows that there is a cumulative view on the concept of culture as an instrument for other parts of the society or other political areas. The culture does not stand independently; it is given the right to exist through the cause of something else.

Fundraising as a theatrical event2017In: International Journal of Nonprofit & Voluntary Sector Marketing, ISSN 1465-4520, E-ISSN 1479-103X, no 4, article id e1594Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper introduces and elaborates the notion of fundraising as a theatrical event. By exploring the theatrical setup, as well as social context, of two elite fundraising events that took place at almost the same time and place and for the same cause, the authors disentangle different components that are at play in a fundraising event. The paper shows that a fundraising event needs to align sensory, artistic, and symbolic theatrical levels to convey the desirability of the fundraising cause. In addition, not only the economic but also the social and cultural capitals of the hosts of the event may be of relevance to the fundraising.

För mycket transparens?: En kvalitativ studie gällande införandet av Markets in Financial Instruments II och bankaktörers upplevda påverkan2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study was carried out with the aim of investigating the impact on Swedish banks during and after the introduction of the directive Market in financial instruments (MiFID) II transparency requirements. After regular shortcomings in the financial market, the new directive was designed to strengthen the transparency for all actors. The problem is the possible risks arising from increased transparency requirements and how banks act and how the asymmetric information is affected on the market between consumers and companies.

The study is of qualitative art and the primary source consists of interviews with selected actors in the Swedish banking market. The result showed that respondents felt that a limit of transparency does not exist and that transparency can not be too much. With the new transparency directive, a positive effect on market quality was seen as increased demands led to higher discipline and thereby reduced asymmetric information. However, the theory confirms that the public can be flooded with too much information, which in turn creates uncertainty for the consumer. Studies showed that the majority of respondents felt positive about the increased transparency requirements and saw great opportunities even though risks were found.
