Arbetslöshet i nyhetstidningar: En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av journalistik under perioderna 1993, 2000 och 20092014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Dokumentärligheten: Filmen Sacrificio (2001) genom publikens ögon2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Knowing the game: motivations and skills among partisan policy professionals2017In: Journal of Professions and Organization, ISSN 2051-8803, E-ISSN 2051-8811, Vol. 4, no 1, p. 55-69Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on “partisan policy professionals” (PPPs), i.e. people who are employed to affectpolitics and policy, and analyzes their particular motivations and skills. This article focuses on the occupationalpractices of PPPs: what are their main motivations and driving forces, and what are thekey skills they deploy in their work? The main motivation for PPPs is a desire to wield power and influencethe course of affairs, while their working-life satisfaction comes from getting their messageinto the media without becoming personally exposed. The key resource of PPPs is contextdependentpolitically useful knowledge, in three main forms: “Problem formulation” involves highlightingand framing social problems and their possible solutions. “Process expertise” consists of understandingthe “where, how, and why” of the political and policy-making processes. “Informationaccess” is the skill to be very fast in finding reliable and relevant information. These motivations andskills underpin a particular professionalism based in an “entrepreneurial ethos”, which differs fromboth the ethos of elected politicians, and that of civil servants, and which has some potentially problematicimplications for democratic governance.

“Most MPs are Not All that Sharp.” Political Employees and Representative Democracy2017In: International Journal of Public Administration, ISSN 0190-0692, E-ISSN 1532-4265, Vol. 40, no 7, p. 548-558Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article analyses the orientations of political employees in Sweden. It finds that their roles are diffuse: there is no agreement among political employees about whether they are politicians or not, and their mandate is fleeting and unclear. They hold the average politician’s intellectual abilities in low regard, and sometimes take on clearly paternalistic views toward elected representatives. They see little attraction in pursuing a career as elected politicians, because of intrusive media scrutiny and since they hold a view of elected politics as slow, boring, and shallow. The professional route to politics is seen as more fast and fun.

Out of the Golden Cage: PR and the career opportunities of policy professionals2016In: Politics and Policy, E-ISSN 1747-1346, Vol. 44, no 1, p. 56-73Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on “policy professionals”—people employed to affect politics and policy making rather than elected to office, and their career motivations and considerations. What do they see as career opportunities and limitations? What resources do policy professionals offer on the job market? How are status and hierarchy on their particular labor market perceived? Special attention is paid to the possible transitions from current job into other positions and arenas. The study pinpoints the “golden cage” problem: the problem for organizations positioned outside party politics to properly evaluate the distinct skills of policy professionals. The key position of the public relations agencies in this regard is highlighted. The article closes with a discussion of some democratic implications of the arguments and findings, such as anticipatory adjustment of behavior in public office, the potential merging of political elites, and the supply driven growth of the policy professional stratum.

Resilient privatization: the puzzling case of for-profit welfare providers in Sweden2019In: Socio-Economic Review, ISSN 1475-1461, E-ISSN 1475-147X, Vol. 17, no 3, p. 745-765Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, we analyse the striking resilience of for-profit care and service provisionin what has often been seen as the archetypical social democratic welfare state:Sweden. We focus on the strategic discursive activities of private companies andtheir business organizations as they try to influence perceptions, organize actorsand facilitate communication to defend profit-making in the welfare sector in theface of increasing conflict and opposition. We argue that taking such organized actioninto account changes dominant perceptions about the characteristics of theSwedish political economy, and carries important lessons for analyses of changesin the organization of the welfare state in general.

”Bland romerna i lägret fanns en blond flicka”: En studie om rapporteringen av Mariafallet i fem svenska tidningar2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Debt availability: The impact of repo-rate policy on household borrowing in Sweden: A study of the relationship between the nominal interest rate and the availability of debt for Swedish households.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Households availability to accrue debt remains a major factor affecting both consumption and savings on an aggregate level. The financial crises at the end of 2007 echoed through the Atlantic ocean and hit the European economies, wrecking havoc as it went. Both nominal and real interest rates plummeted as centrals banks tried to conduct damage control in their respective regions. With some nominal interest rates falling past the zero lower bound and inflation hovering around zero percentage points. The recovery of American and European economies is still ongoing but this process is largely dependent on monetary and fiscal policies by central banks and governments. This thesis examines the relationship between the nominal interest rate and the availability of debt for households, using secondary cross sectional survey data and recorded financial data accumulated over a period of ten years collected every other year. This study limits itself to the country of Sweden and includes different independent variables separate of the nominal interest rate, accounting for some variation and internal effects of the data as well as theoretical considerations. In consensus with previous studies the relationship between the availability of household debt and the nominal interest rate is negative and statistically significant in nature. Indicating that the validity of the classical relationship between nominal interest rate, savings and consumption is affirmed.

Testversion av scenarier för hållbart samhällsbyggande bortom BNP-tillväxt2015Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The strong research environment ”Beyond GDP growth - Scenarios for sustainable building and planning” explores what could happen in the Swedish society when growth is not seen as an end in itself but the goal is instead other qualities that society might wish to achieve. The purpose of this report is to describe the test version of scenarios for Sweden in 2050. The scenarios are qualitative and aim to create a basis for further development, discussion and analysis. The scenarios are so-called normative backcasting scenarios which means that they illustrate future states in which four sustainability targets (climate, land use, participation and resource security) are to be attained. The focus of the four scenarios are: 1) collaborative economy, 2) local self-sufficiency, 3) automisation for quality of life, and 4) circular economy in the welfare state. The scenarios are presented as descriptions of the future in Sweden, with a brief description of global trends and developments in Sweden that may explain the scenario assumptions. A lot of work remains. For example, the scenarios will be presented and discussed in several forums in the coming year, and the feedback from the discussions will be incorporated into a new version of the scenarios. Economic modeling of the scenarios will also be performed, and after that sustainability assessments of scenarios and in depth studies of parts of the scenarios.

Scenarios for sustainable futures beyond GDP growth 20502019In: Futures: The journal of policy, planning and futures studies, ISSN 0016-3287, E-ISSN 1873-6378, Vol. 111, p. 1-14Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The idea of continued economic growth is increasingly questioned and critically analysed on the basis of its potential negative sustainability impact. Along with the critique, visions and strategies for alternative systems need also be brought onto the agenda. The aim of this paper is to present the qualitative content of scenarios that explore sustainability strategies for Swedish society when economic growth is not seen as an end in itself, and instead the objective is other values/targets that society might wish to achieve. Multi-target backcasting scenarios are developed that illustrate future states in which four sustainability targets (climate, land use, participation, and resource security) are to be attained. The focus of these four scenarios is: 1) a Collaborative economy, 2) Local self-sufficiency, 3) Automation for quality of life, and 4) Circular economy in the welfare state. In the paper, we also present the process of the development of the scenarios, and feedback from stakeholders. Although the focus is on Sweden, the process and scenarios may also be relevant for other similar countries. The scenarios are discussed in terms of their relevance and their purpose, the fulfilment of the sustainability targets, and the multi-target approach.

Aktören arkitekturen: Arkitektoniska icke-människors roll för skapandet av det sociala samspelet i en ekoby2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to try to investigate the role that architectural non-humans play for the creation of social interaction in an eco-village. In doing this, the study uses a number of post-humanist theories. Mainly actor-network theory and the material-discursive concept. These state that even non-humans, like houses or mailboxes, are to be seen as co-creators of actions, but that their possible roles are decided by which other actors they attach to in a network. Through observations and interviews with seven residents of an eco-village, the information was gathered. The empirical data shows that many different non-humans are taking an active role in the creating of the social interactions that goes on in the eco-village. To mention a few, the community hall gives room for group activities, open lawns create a possibility for child’s play and mailboxes call for physical movement. In themselves, however, the nonhuman actors do not create social interaction. It is only when used by and interpreted by other actors that they gain their active role. The answer to the question would consequently be that the architectural non-humans in the eco-village do play an active role in the creation of social interaction but that the role is dependent on the other actors that they connect to.

Explaining attitudes to secret surveillance in post-communist societies2018In: East European Politics, ISSN 2159-9165, E-ISSN 2159-9173, Vol. 34, no 2, p. 123-151Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article seeks to explain public attitudes to secret surveillance. Secret surveillance, for example wiretapping by intelligence agencies, is a controversial activity that affects fundamental civil liberties in any democratic system. Several large research projects have recently attempted to explain how people form opinions about surveillance in general. Thereby privacy concerns and institutional trust are often highlighted. In this article, we argue that earlier research uses a too narrow definition of attitudes to surveillance and that secret surveillance is particularly sensitive due to its opaque character. We introduce a two-dimensional concept that focuses on rationalistic and emotional responses to surveillance. Drawing on new data from three post-communist societies – Estonia, Poland, and Serbia – we show how institutional trust is mainly responsible for explaining acceptance of secret surveillance, but not how one feels about it. Instead, it is the level of ontological insecurity and privacy concerns that explains this second dimension. The results are theorised and implications for future research are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

This special issue is the result of a research initiative that began in 2013, just before the annexation of Crimea by Russia. We, the guest editors, together with Pawel Waszkiewicz at the University in Warsaw, wanted to fill a gap in research on surveillance, which had at that time not yet addressed post-communist societies to any great extent. Today the situation is slightly different, but the need for further research is still pressing. It is therefore with great pleasure that we present a collection of five research articles by both senior and early-stage researchers, as well as a postscript by Professor Emeritus Maria Los, who is one of the few researchers who has written extensively on surveillance-related issues from a post-communist perspective. Below we introduce the special issue with a conceptual overview of post-communist research and its connections to surveillance studies.

Börsintroduktioners påverkan på konkurrenter: en eventstudie som kartlägger börsintroduktioners påverkan på sina konkurrenter2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to analyze whether initial public offerings had an impact on rival firms.

Theory: The efficient market hypothesis model, Information asymmetry and the signal theory. Method: A quantitative approach in the methodology has been undertaken where an event study was constructed in order to measure cumulative average abnormal return. The empirical data used in the study consists of 243 rival firms that had an initial public offering occurring in their industry. Two hypotheses have been tested using the simple t-test.

Results: A compilation of the abnormal return of rival firms was made which showed no clear patterns of an impact taking place. When testing the two hypotheses both were rejected which showed that no significant impact took place.

Analysis: According to previous research and theories an impact on the rival firms should have shown but the different sample might be the reason of our results being different.

Conclusion: Due to the two hypotheses being rejected the event study finds no significant evidence of an abnormal return occurring in connection to the initial public offering of a rival firm.

Ger fler besök hos tandläkaren bättre tandhälsa?: En studie av samband mellan rutinbesök hos tandläkare och tandhygienist och antal kvarvarande intakta tänder2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Lagret: Belastning eller tillgång?2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Under 1980-talet började Just-In-Time introduceras i Sverige, senare även LEAN production.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish population is increasing in numbers and at the same time statistics show that employment in Sweden is increasing. The distance between homes and the workplace increases which in turn increases the need for transportation and statistics shows that the numbers of automobiles is increasing. Driving a fossil fuel-driven vehicle contributes to carbon dioxide emissions which in turn contribute to global warming and an increased risk to human health. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding for how automobile dealers acknowledge its customers choices when it comes to cars and if the customers prioritize the more environmentally friendly alternatives. The study shows that environmental awareness has increased among customers and demand has increased overall for environmentally friendly products. The study explains that automobile dealers divide the customer into three different groups. Which is private individuals, corporates and authorities. Previous research shows that despite the increased environmental awareness, customers have difficulties in changing their purchase behavior. The result of this study is that individuals, companies and authorities base their purchase decision for a vehicle based on different motives. An individual values the price and image of the vehicle before the vehicles emission levels. For a corporation, it may vary which factor they value the most. If a corporation has an environmental policy or wants to reflect some other values, it is important that the vehicles image reflect those values. A corporation might also prioritize the taxable value of fringe benefits. Authorities purchase decision is influenced by the requirements from the society and to show a good example toward environmental awareness.

Visions and politics in the making of Stockholm's House of Culture: Institutional complexity within extraordinary projects2017In: Culture and Organization, ISSN 1475-9551, E-ISSN 1477-2760, Vol. 23, no 3, p. 197-219Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the article is to analyse and comprehend the interplay of institutional logics in the realisation of Stockholm's House of Culture, Kulturhuset, hereby beginning to answer the question of what role cultural logics play in cultural development projects. Based on an in-depth case study of the process leading up to the creation of Kulturhuset, the article explores the interplay of a politico-bureaucratic logic and a cultural–professional logic governing the evolution of the project. Following a Scandinavian tradition of interpretative studies of complex development projects, the making of Kulturhuset is framed as an extraordinary project involving a complicated development process. The process dynamics are explored and analysed through the lens of institutional complexity. The article's main contribution lies in its highlighting the interplay of – and nuancing the relation between – institutional logics. It also serves as a reminder of the power of bureaucratic ordering in urban development projects.

Policy change as institutional work: Introducing cultural and creative industries into cultural policy2017In: Qualitative research in organization and management, ISSN 1746-5648, E-ISSN 1746-5656, Vol. 12, no 2, p. 149-168Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Policy change is frequently framed as resulting from governmental strategy based on explicit preferences, rational decision making and consecutive and aligned implementation. The purpose of this paper is to explore the theoretical perspective of institutional work as an alternative approach to understanding policy change, and investigates the construction of resources needed to perform such work.

Design/methodology/approach: The paper is based on a case study of the process wherein the idea of cultural and creative industries was introduced into Lithuanian cultural policy. The main data generating methods are document studies and qualitative interviews.

Findings: The analysis demonstrates the ways in which the resources needed to perform institutional work are created through the enactment of practice, and through the application of resourcing techniques. Three such techniques are identified in the empirical material: the application of experiences from other fields of practice, the elicitation of external support, and the borrowing of legitimacy.

Originality/value: The study offers an alternative approach to studies of policy change by demonstrating the value of institutional work in such change. Further, it contributes to the literature on institutional work by highlighting how instances of such work, drawing on a distributed agency, interlink and connect to each other in a process to produce policy change. Finally, it proposes three interrelated resourcing techniques underlying institutional work.

Bitcoin: En jämförande studie om risk och avkastning på europamarknaden2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is about the potential advantages as an investment option in a portfolio. The study shows that the incorporation of bitcoins in a portfolio, even to a small degree, gives significant increases of both risk and return. The different studied portfolios sharpe ratio rises, which in turn shows that the risk reducing return increases when bitcoins is used as an investment option.

This study is based on Virtual Currency, Tangible Return: Portfolio Diversification with Bitcoins by Brière, Oosterlinck and Szafarz. The authors of this study have compared their own results with the study mentioned and seen its similarities and differences. The study investigated a total of eleven different assets percentage return over 192 weeks ranging from July 2010 to March 2014. The risk, return and other calculations have been made using the formulas in the programs Microsoft Office Excel and Open Office Calc. The results show that bitcoins give a significant increase in risk and return, but that the increases is bigger on the worlds market compared to the european market.

When investing in bitcoin the authors point out that there are still risks that can not be calculated in this type of study and is something that investors should be aware of, for example hackers. Risk, security, trust and confidence are discussed and analyzed in the study to increase understanding of the nature of bitcoins. To summarize, the authors agree with Brière, Oosterlinck and Szafarz by drawing the conclusion that digital currencies should be taken seriously as an investment option.

Insiderhandel: En studie om insiderhandel i de svenska bankerna2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study, is to explore whether or not prison sentences of less than a year, are appropriate, when judged from an individual preventive angle. This will be discovered through processing the interviews of a criminologist, a district prosecutor and a prison governor. Their expertise covers the areas of criminals, institution and crime prevention. Our data is drawn from parts of the theory about denial of freedom by Michel Foucault, who explores prison as an institution; the theory about prisonization by Donald Clemmer, who explored the process of socialization, that occurs when an individual goes to prison, and becomes a part of the prison sub culture; also the theory of moral sociology by Èmile Durkheim, who defines what we call a society, the basis of moral action and how these two interact. The result showed that prison sentences of less than a year are not appropriate, when judged from an individual preventive angel. Though judged from a general preventive angle, it can be seen as appropriate.

Ethics within Journalistic Cultures in Spain and Sweden: A study on text and images from mainstream media online digital editions2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The topic of men’s violence against women has become visible in the recent years in the Western world, thanks to Social Media Network campaigns and digital news articles reporting these cases. The factors which affect or delimit journalist’s writings from different countries and their way of ‘doing’ journalism, might rely on the journalistic ethical boundaries within the journalistic cultures journalists inhabit.

I explore and compare in this thesis the performative ethical action of journalists emerging from their writings and between the journalistic cultures of Spain and Sweden. Eighteen articles are analysed in a comparative and cross-national manner (Esser et al. 2012; Hanitzsch et al. 2011; Weaver 1998) helped by the Three Dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis model (Fairclough 1992/3; 1995)  and Semiotics (Wang 2014; Barthes 1957, 1963, 1964). ‘Diffraction’ (Barad 2007; Haraway 1997, 2004) is employed  as complementary perspective to reflect critically on differences, revealing where and how these materialize in regard to ethics within journalistic cultures.

The study  finds and concludes  that the performative ethical action of the journalist differs in regard to crime-news reported in each country. Detailed information of the parties involved in sexual violence is written in Spanish news-articles more often than in those from Sweden. The approach to these crimes seem to be framed by the journalistic ethical boundaries, journalistic cultures and personal ethical choices existing in both countries. These ethical ideas manifest by actions  -the published journalistic text - are relative and contextual. The cases told are part of the social realities of both countries, but are being experienced and performed (in writing) in a different manner also in terms of journalistic dimensions.

The information presented to the news consumer in both written and visual form, differ or it is very similar between these countries, depending if it comes from mainstream ‘quality’ or ‘tabloid’ media outlets, but neutral images to illustrate the news-articles are the shown by both. Whereas the selected Spanish medias could be framed under a professional and relative ethical approach, the Swedish would fall under the category of professional and idealistic ethics. The similarities are that journalists from both countries keep-on informing on cases of men’s violence against women within the limits of  journalistic ethics and seem to be important key-actors producing information, culture and journalistic culture they inhabit while disseminating these stories.

Tjänstedesign – en Institutionaliserad Superstandard?: En kvalitativ studie om tjänstedesign med fokus på den ökande psykiska ohälsan2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The essay describes how institutionalized standards arise and spreads in the global organizational community. From an institutional perspective, service design is analyzed as an institutionalized standard focusing on its claims to address a current problem in society, the increasing mental health.

The purpose is to analyze how service design is formulated as meaningful in the institutional environment and whether service design meets the characteristics that characterize successful institutionalized standards. Furthermore, the purpose is to analyze the way in which service design is presented as meaningful to address the problem of increasing mental illness. Does service design in this regard fulfill the characteristics that characterize successful institutionalized standards and how does service design look like spreading in this claim?

The approach to achieving the purpose is by distinguishing indicators of the characteristics that characterize successful institutionalized standards. The indicators consist of central meanings of service design based on a general presentation and based on a problem focused presentation. Secondary data in the form of conceptual literature form the basis of the general presentation, and primary data in the form of semistructured interviews focus on the current problem of increasing mental illness.

The conclusion is that service design based on a general presentation already fulfills most characteristics that characterize successful institutionalized standards and thus has a good opportunity to institutionalize and spread. Furthermore, it is concluded that service design focusing on the problem of increasing mental health meets the characteristics required in an external sense to institutionalize and spread. There is, however, no basis for determining whether service design focusing on the problem of increasing mental health internally within the organizational activity has the characteristics required to institutionalize and spread in the global organizational community.

Användningen av smarta mobiltelefoners betydelse för upplevelsen av stress inom arbetslivet2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study examined the relationship between smartphone usage and perceived stress among employees. According to the hypothesis, there would be a correlation between increasingly work-related smartphone usage and increased perception of stress, especially when the use were perceived to interfere spare time. A webb-survey that measured the amplitude and nature of smartphone usage in relation to Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen, Kamarck, and Mermelstein, 1983) were answered by a total of 154 employees recruited from the private and public sectors. The results suggested that increased perception of stress was related with increased smartphone usage, whether it was work-related or private-related, and especially if the usage perceived to interfere spare time. Since the work-related usage specifically didn´t correlate with the perception of stress the hypothesis where only partially supported. Use that could be related to increased stress was SMS- and MMS-messaging, and the use of internet and mobile application usage. However, there was no association between increased e-mail usage and an increased perception of stress, since those who were the least stressed actually used e-mail more often, which is inconsistent with previous research that indicates the opposite (Middleton & Cukier, 2006; Elworthy, 2010). The study has contributed with knowledge of smartphone usage and how it can be handled by employees, organizations and companies to reduce the perception of stress.

Att särskilja sitt varumärke på en marknad med låg pris- och produktdifferentiering: En studie om den svenska bryggkaffemarknaden2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the best ways for companies, with high involvement products that are bought based on feelings, to attract consumers in a market with low product and price differentiation by using their brands. In other words, this study aims to find out which brand attributes that are most suitable for high involvement products that are bought based on feelings.

Previous research has stated that a brand on a competitive market can choose two strategies to compete, either with their brand value or with price. Previous research has also shown which strategies to use depending on the products nature and that products that are bought based on feelings should focus on the brand rather than the price. The gap that this study aims to fill is how companies should use their brands to compete in such a market.

This study has been done with combination of both a qualitative and a quantitative approach, this method is in other words called triangulation. The research has been conducted through an online survey, semi-structural interviews with consumers and a semi-structural interview with the Nordic marketing manager of Arvid Nordquists coffee and tea products.

Previous research that has been gathered from the fields marketing and consumer behavior. The main theories that has been included are: The FCB grid, Brand Equity and Brand Personality. Conclusion

The conclusion of this study is that brands need to focus on the products charisma rather than information in their marketing communication. They also need to make an emotional connection with the consumer by adding aspirational characteristics to their brand. This study also shows that it is important that the company is consistent with the image of their brand so that the price mirrors the brand and the brand mirrors the actual product.

"Po-tay-to Po-tah-to": En studie om skillnader och likheter mellan Sveriges Radios program Så funkar det och Naturmorgon samt deras angränsande poddar2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Underprissättning av IPOs: En kvantitativ jämförelse mellan svenska börslistor2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Pricing shares for an upcoming IPO can be difficult and it is in the companies’, theInvestment Bank’s and investor’s interest that the shares are fairly priced. The current information asymmetry often results in companies underpricing their shares to attract investors to participate in an upcoming IPO. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the difference in share performance on the first trading day between different stock lists on the Swedish IPO market. This is done in order to see if the different listing requirements, such as information publishing and market capitalization, are important factors for the underpricing of shares. The different stock lists that have been analyzed are Small, Mid and Large Capfrom Nasdaq OMX Stockholm which are all official stock lists, as well as the Multilateral Trading Facilities (MTF) First North and Spotlight. The result of this study shows that market capitalization doesn’t affect the pricing of shares for upcoming IPOs. This because there was minor differences between the different official stock lists Small, Mid and Large Cap, eventhough the required market capitalization to get listed are very different. The different requirements regarding information publishing however, have shown leads to more inaccurately priced shares. The result shows that MTFs’ such as First North and Spotlight experience a wider range of pricing where the average under- and overpricing är very high. This means a higher risk for the investor, but also the potential for higher returns.

Revisionsberättelsens betydelse: En studie om fortlevnadsvarning2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

If there are essential uncertainties for the company's going concern, the auditor are obligated to comment on it in the audit report. ISA 570 is an international regulation of audits that were introduced in Sweden in 2004. A translation was made of ISA 570 going concern for Sweden that was called "fortsatt drift". It is difficult for auditors to assess and comment on the company's going concern as there may be many influencing factors. ISA 570 contain no standard design for warning of going concern, which could create further uncertainty among auditors. According to the Swedish law "Aktiebolagslagen" auditors are obligated to comment if the company is going into liquidation. Such a statement may be seen as an indirect warning about the company's survival. Although the "Revisorsnämnden" in Sweden has made it clear that this is not considered to be a warning of going concern. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the auditor's statement and warning of going concern and initiated bankruptcy. The purpose is also to investigate whether there is any difference between accounting firms / auditors regarding the accuracy of the statement about going concern.

The survey results show that there is a relationship between the initiated bankruptcy and warning about going concern. It also showed that there is a correlation between survival warning, and later initiated bankruptcy. Another conclusion is that the mid-sized accounting firms have been the most reliable when it comes to statement about going concern.
