Visions and politics in the making of Stockholm's House of Culture: Institutional complexity within extraordinary projects2017In: Culture and Organization, ISSN 1475-9551, E-ISSN 1477-2760, Vol. 23, no 3, p. 197-219Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the article is to analyse and comprehend the interplay of institutional logics in the realisation of Stockholm's House of Culture, Kulturhuset, hereby beginning to answer the question of what role cultural logics play in cultural development projects. Based on an in-depth case study of the process leading up to the creation of Kulturhuset, the article explores the interplay of a politico-bureaucratic logic and a cultural–professional logic governing the evolution of the project. Following a Scandinavian tradition of interpretative studies of complex development projects, the making of Kulturhuset is framed as an extraordinary project involving a complicated development process. The process dynamics are explored and analysed through the lens of institutional complexity. The article's main contribution lies in its highlighting the interplay of – and nuancing the relation between – institutional logics. It also serves as a reminder of the power of bureaucratic ordering in urban development projects.

Policy change as institutional work: Introducing cultural and creative industries into cultural policy2017In: Qualitative research in organization and management, ISSN 1746-5648, E-ISSN 1746-5656, Vol. 12, no 2, p. 149-168Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Policy change is frequently framed as resulting from governmental strategy based on explicit preferences, rational decision making and consecutive and aligned implementation. The purpose of this paper is to explore the theoretical perspective of institutional work as an alternative approach to understanding policy change, and investigates the construction of resources needed to perform such work.

Design/methodology/approach: The paper is based on a case study of the process wherein the idea of cultural and creative industries was introduced into Lithuanian cultural policy. The main data generating methods are document studies and qualitative interviews.

Findings: The analysis demonstrates the ways in which the resources needed to perform institutional work are created through the enactment of practice, and through the application of resourcing techniques. Three such techniques are identified in the empirical material: the application of experiences from other fields of practice, the elicitation of external support, and the borrowing of legitimacy.

Originality/value: The study offers an alternative approach to studies of policy change by demonstrating the value of institutional work in such change. Further, it contributes to the literature on institutional work by highlighting how instances of such work, drawing on a distributed agency, interlink and connect to each other in a process to produce policy change. Finally, it proposes three interrelated resourcing techniques underlying institutional work.

Bitcoin: En jämförande studie om risk och avkastning på europamarknaden2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is about the potential advantages as an investment option in a portfolio. The study shows that the incorporation of bitcoins in a portfolio, even to a small degree, gives significant increases of both risk and return. The different studied portfolios sharpe ratio rises, which in turn shows that the risk reducing return increases when bitcoins is used as an investment option.

This study is based on Virtual Currency, Tangible Return: Portfolio Diversification with Bitcoins by Brière, Oosterlinck and Szafarz. The authors of this study have compared their own results with the study mentioned and seen its similarities and differences. The study investigated a total of eleven different assets percentage return over 192 weeks ranging from July 2010 to March 2014. The risk, return and other calculations have been made using the formulas in the programs Microsoft Office Excel and Open Office Calc. The results show that bitcoins give a significant increase in risk and return, but that the increases is bigger on the worlds market compared to the european market.

When investing in bitcoin the authors point out that there are still risks that can not be calculated in this type of study and is something that investors should be aware of, for example hackers. Risk, security, trust and confidence are discussed and analyzed in the study to increase understanding of the nature of bitcoins. To summarize, the authors agree with Brière, Oosterlinck and Szafarz by drawing the conclusion that digital currencies should be taken seriously as an investment option.

Insiderhandel: En studie om insiderhandel i de svenska bankerna2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Population Growth: an asset or a curse?: Role played by economic freedom and education in turning population growth into an asset2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis presents the comparison of role played by economic freedom and education in making population growth beneficial for economy. In order to assess this relationship, four groups of countries have been selected based on EFW index. Cross-section regression has been performed including 92 countries for years 2005 and 2010. Comparisons have also been presented in graphical analysis. Moreover, correlations among variables have also been studied. It has been concluded that education matters the most in turning population growth to an asset.

Normprövning i Uruguay och Sverige - En konstitutionell rättssäkerhet för den enskilde?: En studie av den konkreta efterhandskontrollen i ett komparativrättsligt perspektiv.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study, is to explore whether or not prison sentences of less than a year, are appropriate, when judged from an individual preventive angle. This will be discovered through processing the interviews of a criminologist, a district prosecutor and a prison governor. Their expertise covers the areas of criminals, institution and crime prevention. Our data is drawn from parts of the theory about denial of freedom by Michel Foucault, who explores prison as an institution; the theory about prisonization by Donald Clemmer, who explored the process of socialization, that occurs when an individual goes to prison, and becomes a part of the prison sub culture; also the theory of moral sociology by Èmile Durkheim, who defines what we call a society, the basis of moral action and how these two interact. The result showed that prison sentences of less than a year are not appropriate, when judged from an individual preventive angel. Though judged from a general preventive angle, it can be seen as appropriate.

Ethics within Journalistic Cultures in Spain and Sweden: A study on text and images from mainstream media online digital editions2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The topic of men’s violence against women has become visible in the recent years in the Western world, thanks to Social Media Network campaigns and digital news articles reporting these cases. The factors which affect or delimit journalist’s writings from different countries and their way of ‘doing’ journalism, might rely on the journalistic ethical boundaries within the journalistic cultures journalists inhabit.

I explore and compare in this thesis the performative ethical action of journalists emerging from their writings and between the journalistic cultures of Spain and Sweden. Eighteen articles are analysed in a comparative and cross-national manner (Esser et al. 2012; Hanitzsch et al. 2011; Weaver 1998) helped by the Three Dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis model (Fairclough 1992/3; 1995)  and Semiotics (Wang 2014; Barthes 1957, 1963, 1964). ‘Diffraction’ (Barad 2007; Haraway 1997, 2004) is employed  as complementary perspective to reflect critically on differences, revealing where and how these materialize in regard to ethics within journalistic cultures.

The study  finds and concludes  that the performative ethical action of the journalist differs in regard to crime-news reported in each country. Detailed information of the parties involved in sexual violence is written in Spanish news-articles more often than in those from Sweden. The approach to these crimes seem to be framed by the journalistic ethical boundaries, journalistic cultures and personal ethical choices existing in both countries. These ethical ideas manifest by actions  -the published journalistic text - are relative and contextual. The cases told are part of the social realities of both countries, but are being experienced and performed (in writing) in a different manner also in terms of journalistic dimensions.

The information presented to the news consumer in both written and visual form, differ or it is very similar between these countries, depending if it comes from mainstream ‘quality’ or ‘tabloid’ media outlets, but neutral images to illustrate the news-articles are the shown by both. Whereas the selected Spanish medias could be framed under a professional and relative ethical approach, the Swedish would fall under the category of professional and idealistic ethics. The similarities are that journalists from both countries keep-on informing on cases of men’s violence against women within the limits of  journalistic ethics and seem to be important key-actors producing information, culture and journalistic culture they inhabit while disseminating these stories.

Tjänstedesign – en Institutionaliserad Superstandard?: En kvalitativ studie om tjänstedesign med fokus på den ökande psykiska ohälsan2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The essay describes how institutionalized standards arise and spreads in the global organizational community. From an institutional perspective, service design is analyzed as an institutionalized standard focusing on its claims to address a current problem in society, the increasing mental health.

The purpose is to analyze how service design is formulated as meaningful in the institutional environment and whether service design meets the characteristics that characterize successful institutionalized standards. Furthermore, the purpose is to analyze the way in which service design is presented as meaningful to address the problem of increasing mental illness. Does service design in this regard fulfill the characteristics that characterize successful institutionalized standards and how does service design look like spreading in this claim?

The approach to achieving the purpose is by distinguishing indicators of the characteristics that characterize successful institutionalized standards. The indicators consist of central meanings of service design based on a general presentation and based on a problem focused presentation. Secondary data in the form of conceptual literature form the basis of the general presentation, and primary data in the form of semistructured interviews focus on the current problem of increasing mental illness.

The conclusion is that service design based on a general presentation already fulfills most characteristics that characterize successful institutionalized standards and thus has a good opportunity to institutionalize and spread. Furthermore, it is concluded that service design focusing on the problem of increasing mental health meets the characteristics required in an external sense to institutionalize and spread. There is, however, no basis for determining whether service design focusing on the problem of increasing mental health internally within the organizational activity has the characteristics required to institutionalize and spread in the global organizational community.

Användningen av smarta mobiltelefoners betydelse för upplevelsen av stress inom arbetslivet2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study examined the relationship between smartphone usage and perceived stress among employees. According to the hypothesis, there would be a correlation between increasingly work-related smartphone usage and increased perception of stress, especially when the use were perceived to interfere spare time. A webb-survey that measured the amplitude and nature of smartphone usage in relation to Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen, Kamarck, and Mermelstein, 1983) were answered by a total of 154 employees recruited from the private and public sectors. The results suggested that increased perception of stress was related with increased smartphone usage, whether it was work-related or private-related, and especially if the usage perceived to interfere spare time. Since the work-related usage specifically didn´t correlate with the perception of stress the hypothesis where only partially supported. Use that could be related to increased stress was SMS- and MMS-messaging, and the use of internet and mobile application usage. However, there was no association between increased e-mail usage and an increased perception of stress, since those who were the least stressed actually used e-mail more often, which is inconsistent with previous research that indicates the opposite (Middleton & Cukier, 2006; Elworthy, 2010). The study has contributed with knowledge of smartphone usage and how it can be handled by employees, organizations and companies to reduce the perception of stress.

Att särskilja sitt varumärke på en marknad med låg pris- och produktdifferentiering: En studie om den svenska bryggkaffemarknaden2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the best ways for companies, with high involvement products that are bought based on feelings, to attract consumers in a market with low product and price differentiation by using their brands. In other words, this study aims to find out which brand attributes that are most suitable for high involvement products that are bought based on feelings.

Previous research has stated that a brand on a competitive market can choose two strategies to compete, either with their brand value or with price. Previous research has also shown which strategies to use depending on the products nature and that products that are bought based on feelings should focus on the brand rather than the price. The gap that this study aims to fill is how companies should use their brands to compete in such a market.

This study has been done with combination of both a qualitative and a quantitative approach, this method is in other words called triangulation. The research has been conducted through an online survey, semi-structural interviews with consumers and a semi-structural interview with the Nordic marketing manager of Arvid Nordquists coffee and tea products.

Previous research that has been gathered from the fields marketing and consumer behavior. The main theories that has been included are: The FCB grid, Brand Equity and Brand Personality. Conclusion

The conclusion of this study is that brands need to focus on the products charisma rather than information in their marketing communication. They also need to make an emotional connection with the consumer by adding aspirational characteristics to their brand. This study also shows that it is important that the company is consistent with the image of their brand so that the price mirrors the brand and the brand mirrors the actual product.

"Po-tay-to Po-tah-to": En studie om skillnader och likheter mellan Sveriges Radios program Så funkar det och Naturmorgon samt deras angränsande poddar2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Underprissättning av IPOs: En kvantitativ jämförelse mellan svenska börslistor2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Pricing shares for an upcoming IPO can be difficult and it is in the companies’, theInvestment Bank’s and investor’s interest that the shares are fairly priced. The current information asymmetry often results in companies underpricing their shares to attract investors to participate in an upcoming IPO. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the difference in share performance on the first trading day between different stock lists on the Swedish IPO market. This is done in order to see if the different listing requirements, such as information publishing and market capitalization, are important factors for the underpricing of shares. The different stock lists that have been analyzed are Small, Mid and Large Capfrom Nasdaq OMX Stockholm which are all official stock lists, as well as the Multilateral Trading Facilities (MTF) First North and Spotlight. The result of this study shows that market capitalization doesn’t affect the pricing of shares for upcoming IPOs. This because there was minor differences between the different official stock lists Small, Mid and Large Cap, eventhough the required market capitalization to get listed are very different. The different requirements regarding information publishing however, have shown leads to more inaccurately priced shares. The result shows that MTFs’ such as First North and Spotlight experience a wider range of pricing where the average under- and overpricing är very high. This means a higher risk for the investor, but also the potential for higher returns.

    Abstract [en]

If there are essential uncertainties for the company's going concern, the auditor are obligated to comment on it in the audit report. ISA 570 is an international regulation of audits that were introduced in Sweden in 2004. A translation was made of ISA 570 going concern for Sweden that was called "fortsatt drift". It is difficult for auditors to assess and comment on the company's going concern as there may be many influencing factors. ISA 570 contain no standard design for warning of going concern, which could create further uncertainty among auditors. According to the Swedish law "Aktiebolagslagen" auditors are obligated to comment if the company is going into liquidation. Such a statement may be seen as an indirect warning about the company's survival. Although the "Revisorsnämnden" in Sweden has made it clear that this is not considered to be a warning of going concern. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the auditor's statement and warning of going concern and initiated bankruptcy. The purpose is also to investigate whether there is any difference between accounting firms / auditors regarding the accuracy of the statement about going concern.

The survey results show that there is a relationship between the initiated bankruptcy and warning about going concern. It also showed that there is a correlation between survival warning, and later initiated bankruptcy. Another conclusion is that the mid-sized accounting firms have been the most reliable when it comes to statement about going concern.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to contribute with further knowledge to why woman have a hard time making a career to a top postition. Our main focus is to examine and explain how inclusion and exclusion of individuals are present at an organizational level and within in the relationships among people within and between organisations. By studying inclusion and exclusion we hope to understand how these can work as difficulties and how they’re present when woman proceed to a top position within organizations. Our results helps us understand that exclusion at the organizational level is due to the fact that there is someone else who has the authority to promote you. We also found a tendency that networking within and between organizations can make it difficult for women due to the fact that most of our woman must develop relationsships to men who are more likely to be in a top position. Within the relationship aspect we find tendencies that show that there has been a great deal of men with the power to promote others and men are more likely to choose other men in to leading positions.

    Abstract [en]

The role as the project manager requires several complementary skills in many different areas to pursue projects and finding the right person for the project management position can therefore be seen as a major challenge from the recruiters perspective. The project manager should have a combination of both hard and soft skills, and an understanding of organizational environment which the person will be working in. The purpose of the study is to describe and create a deeper understanding of how a few recruiters evaluate establish job requirements and evaluate the project manager's competence in the recruitment process and how the selection is made for the most interesting candidate for the post.

The writers of the study have chosen to use a qualitative method of semi-structured interviews to collect results from four recruiters. The writers of the study used a case study research design in order to get deeper understanding of recruiters’generalperspective and how they work in the various stages of the recruitment process.

The hard skills can be seen as the project manager’s prerequisites to run a project and stepping into the project role. The results show that the project manager's hard skills are set and investigated early in the recruitment process. The soft skills are considered more difficult to define, measure and evaluate, from a subjective approach and therefore it is good to use multiple methods to evaluate these. Usually this is done at a later stage in the recruitment process, after reviewing the resume and personal letter.

Recruiters believe it is important that the project manager has earned anunderstanding and insight into the organization that the project manager will be working in. This knowledge and understanding is not always a requirement, but can be seenmore as an advantage if the project is set in a specific industry which requirea specific knowledge. The project manager's focus will be to drive the project forward and act as a coordinator

    Abstract [en]

Does one of the major Swedish newspapers Dagens Nyheter reflect the intensifying interrelations and interdependences in the world today? The aim of this study is to find expressions for globalization in the main section of Dagens Nyheter during the period between 1988 and 2013. To achieve this, we applied quantitative content analysis on 1492 news articles from Dagens Nyheter. Here, expressions for globalization are examined in three ways: the amount of foreign reporting, which countries, regions and continents are represented in the reporting and whether the news style” global journalism” is present in the reporting. This study finds an increase in foreign reporting at the expense of domestic reporting, that not all countries, regions and continents are represented and that global journalism is present to some extent.

    Abstract [en]

The thesis is interested in the non-white Swedes who, despite their Swedish citizenship feel that they are not always able or allowed to feel like Swedes. The starting point is that in Sweden there is a whiteness standard witch for non-white Swedes have consequences in form of racism, exclusion and alienation. To get an understanding of the mechanisms behind these effects the writers instead of a general theory use several key concepts and theoretical points all seen from a postcolonial perspective. Seven interviews were held with non-white Swedes who was interviewed on how they perceive and interpret racism. Furthermore, the paper sought answers on whether respondents have been unconscious or conscious strategies to manage or respond to racism. It has since been made a comparison to see if it differs depending on whether respondents grew up in Sweden or not.

The result shows that all respondents, regardless of group, experience racism and get their Swedishness questioned. The biggest differences between the two groups lies in how respondents choose to deal with the racism they encounter. The group of respondents who grew up in Sweden chooses to confront the racism they face while the group of respondents who didn’t grow up in Sweden are more inclined to deal with or escape it.

    Abstract [en]

For more than three decades, China has managed to combine rapid economic growth with a strictly regulated financial sector. The discrepancy between economic and financial development has raised the question of whether China might be an exception to the so-called finance-growth nexus. This study examines the relationship between finance and growth at the provincial level in China using a new set of measures of capital freedom and financial development. The results indicate that capital freedom and financial development are associated with both higher income and growth rates. In particular, we find that the marketisation of financial institutions and strengthening of legal and government institutions have a particularly strong impact on income and growth in low-income provinces.

Do well-functioning financial markets contribute to economic growth in less developed countries?: A cross-sectional study on low- and lower-middle-income countries2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the correlation between credit intermediated by financial systems and economic growth in developing countries. More specifically we have studied whether well-functioning financial markets result in economic growth. We base our study on data from 53 low- and lower-middle income countries in the period 2004-2011. By comparing the two different economic theories, Schumpeter’s growth theory and Austrian business cycle theory, we have analysed our results from two different perspectives. The results from this study show an insignificant relationship between financial systems and economic growth, contradicting much of the theory and results from previous studies that have been reviewed. Other variables outside of the financial system in this study, such as economic freedom and corruption, could be a reason for the non-existent correlation between financial development and economic growth in this study.

Nu jagar de papperslösa: En kvalitativ diskursanalys om massmedias framställning av Reva-projektet och polisens arbete2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay, “Now they are chasing paper-less - A qualitative discourse analysis of mass medias depiction of the Reva-project and the work of the police”, is to analyze how mass media portrays the Reva-project and polices work with the project. The basis for the essay will be eight selected newspapers. The Reva-project implies collaboration between the Police, the Swedish Migration board and the Swedish Prison and Probation Service within the border police. The aim of the project is to enhance the efficiency and the execution of the border police work, in accordance with the government’s target. Furthermore, we want to understand and describe how the discourse around the Reva-project is portrayed in a mass media context, how the articles describe the Reva-project, the police work with the project and also what consequences has emerged from the project. In addition to the discourse analysis a supplementary interview with a police officer has been conducted. In this essay we want to relate to previous research that addresses how news are produced and manufactured and how the police are described in the mass media by examining relevant material from 2008 and onwards. We have been inspired by Michel Foucaults archaeological approach and Norman Faircloughs three dimensional model, which we have used to analyze our data. The portrayal that mass media does of the Reva-project and the police work with the project is negatively emphasized in the articles as they use words like “disgusting”, “a death machine” and “unacceptable” when they describe the project or the police work with the project. However we can recognize a discrepancy between the mass media and police statements in mass media as well as the complementary interview we conducted with the police officer.

    Abstract [en]

From chatter to organized networks. How think tanks work to enrol others

Think tanks, both inside and outside the Swedish context, appear as something of a conundrum. Definitions and conceptual understandings of what think tanks actually do have not been adequately developed. One of the most urgent and unanswered questions regards how we understand the ability of think tanks to get other actors in the political landscape to use their ideas? Drawing on insights from 13 think thanks in Stockholm, the intention of this paper is to provide an empirically based and theoretically informed answer to this question. The results show that the activities colloquially termed ”networking” and ”agenda setting”, can be understood from an organisational perspective. These activities come across as intangible with uncertain outcomes but cannot be seen as random attempts to bridge think tankers and policy actors, but as decided actions designed to make other actors use their ideas in the future. At the same time, the organized relationships to other actors are ambiguous, as too close relationships may risk the think tank’s appearance of independency.

A Matter of ‘Extremism’?: Ideas about democracy and political change within Anarchist and Autonomist activists in Sweden2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to identify the relationship towards democracy amongst anarchist and autonomist movement activists. Using the case of activists in Sweden, we scrutinize the relationship to the idea and practice of democracy found in contemporary radical left. How is democracy framed in groups such as these? By so doing we wish to add to and develop the research field on left movements and parties that sometimes are labeled “extreme”. We believe that the “extremism” concept is troublesome in several ways, mainly since it is an ‘asymmetrical concept’ in Koselleck’s sense. In spite of this acknowledgement, we will tentatively use it, in order to mirror and thereby capture how “democracy”, as an idea and practice, is framed by anarchist and autonomous activists.

In the paper we compare the notion of extremism with the ideas of autonomous and anarchist activist activists in Sweden. The five common elements attributed to the concept of extremism could not be found in the interviews. To the contrary, using the concept in order to find extremism showed a pattern of values usually attributed to the concept of ”deliberative democracy”.

Begreppet extremism - en kritisk introduktion2016In: ARKIV. Tidskrift för samhällsanalys, ISSN 2000-6225, E-ISSN 2000-6217, no 5, p. 15-37Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Individualization, Life Politics, and the Reformulation of Social Critique: an Analysis of the Global Justice Movement2013In: Critical Sociology, ISSN 0896-9205, E-ISSN 1569-1632, Vol. 39, no 3, p. 453-478Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Taking the contemporary political activism of ‘the Global Justice Movement’ as an illustrative case, this article scrutinizes some influential theoretical ideas about the consequences of ‘individualization’ for collective political action. Quite often, this process is seen as implying a new politics of individual life style – ‘life politics’ – which is associated with new social movements and claimed to have gained importance since the 1960s, on the expense of the collective ‘emancipatory politics’ being associated with ‘old social movements’ such as the Labor Movement. In the light of the article’s empirical findings, this alleged division between life politics and emancipatory politics is questioned, and it is argued that these two kinds of politics should be understood as intertwined practices. The article’s theoretically grounded analysis is based on quantitative data from a survey of participants at the fifth European Social Forum. These data are interpreted and further explored using qualitative interviews with activists.

Scania Production System: En kartläggning av Scania Production System och dess utveckling2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this report is to map the Scania Production System (SPS), how it was motivated and implemented within Scania's organization, as well as linking previous reforms with SPS. We want to find out how Scania managed to create its own customized production system that proved being successful and how it was introduced throughout the organization. SPS is a result of Toyota and their Toyota Production System (TPS) following a close collaboration between Scania and Toyota since the early 1990s. Scania's values, principles and priorities are described by SPS and have proven to be one of the company's competitive advantages through increased efficiency and productivity in production. TPS received much inspiration from the earlier reforms of Taylorism and Fordism from the rationalization movement. This through Taylor's ideas about standardization and Ford's running band principle. Toyota was also one of the first to design and apply the logistics theory’s Total Quality Management, Lean Production and Just-In-Time in its production system. Reforms used and well known in many companies, not least Scania and SPS. The report fulfilled its purpose through interviews and analysis of conceptual literature to find that there is a red thread within the company and that there is a clear link between SPS and previous reforms. In conclusion, we also managed to analyse and draw conclusions about how the SPS was designed, motivated and implemented. The design of SPS was achieved through close collaboration between Scania and Toyota wires, which enabled Scania to inspire and adapt the system to Scania's culture. The way in which SPS was motivated and implanted preceded a management process that Scania applied to within the organization. The solution came to be decisive for the future, leadership. A new way of thinking was applied throughout the business, which has proved to be successful.

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Historically, the Swedish companies' loan-based financing mostly consists of bank loans. After the 2008 financial crisis, banks have been forced to reduce lending as they now work along the new Basel III regulations. The Swedish Riksbank and the Swedish business community believe that this regulation will hit hardest towards smaller companies. Researches in the field believe that the Swedish corporate bond market did not receive the development it ought to have been.

Aim: The purpose of this study is to seek an understanding of why the Swedish corporate bond market seems to be underdeveloped among small companies and also to examine the future suitability regarding a future entry on the Swedish corporate bond market, for the selection. To put the study results into perspective, the study will include a benchmark gathered from the Large Cap.

Method: To meet the study objective, a method triangulation is applied. The empirical data has partly been collected through semi-structured interviews with actors listed on the Swedish Small Cap. An interview guide was designed on the basis of the study´s problematization and theoretical framework. The empirical data is also collected through a multiple regression analysis, in order to examine the sample suitability for future entry into the Swedish corporate bond market.

Conclusion: The results we obtained from this study is that the Swedish corporate bond market is still underdeveloped. The study showed that the smaller companies knowledge of the market is insufficient and that the banks' new role as intermediate are creating information asymmetries and henceforth high transaction costs. The study may also conclude that the company's size, measured in total assets, could provide a firm-specific variable that can explain an inadequate credit rating for a possible entry into the corporate bond market.

    Abstract [sv]

A committed company can adapt and develop different marketing strategies using the knowledge of consumer behavior, thereby acting as a competitive tool that strengthens their market position. Products that brings forth a certain behavior of the consumer, such that the consumer will be prone to spend more time in searching information, refers to as high involvement products. During the decision making process, the consumer can be influenced by everything from past experience to perception of personality.

The study is designed using only primary data and the survey is based on open interviews with five consumers who have made a purchase of a high involvement product within the last month. With the help of theories and previous research, the collected data analyses some of the different factors that can influence the consumers during the consumer buying decision process of a high involvement product.

A clear connection can be found between consumer buying decision process and the different characteristics which are reflected in the study's theory chapter. The most recurrent attributes that the consumers have been affected by the purchase decision process first step, appear to be also upcoming in the following stages.

The most frequent factor, as consumers proved most affected by are groups. Primary groups, in the form of parents, family members and friends, returning several times at all of those asked consumers purchase decision process. The reason can be that the feeling of trust from the costumer’s side is higher in the primary groups, while there may exist lack of trust for retailers as they may seem to act for company or personal gain.

Värdet av ett Z-värde i Sverige: En aktuell branschjämförelse2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Bankruptcies are a risk that affects all actors in a society. Several tools have been developed to predict bankruptcy. One of these is Altman’s Z-score model. There are however structural differences between types of companies. There are also external aspects, which in turn change over time and locations. Purpose: To examine how Altman’s Z-score could be used as an indicator for financial distress among different industries in Sweden. Theoretical framework: Several relevant theories are presented. First out is a description of how accounts can be examined using key-performance-indicators. Thereafter comes a literary review of Altman’s Z-score model, as well as comparative tools. This theory was used to formulate six hypotheses. The theoretical framework ends with a review of prior studies. Method:This thesis followed the general framework within financial research. It used an abductive research methodology. Which gives it qualitative and quantitative approaches. There is partly a self-made study using test and reference units. Which were examined over a three-year period. As well as the data gathered from prior studies, presented in the theoretical framework. All methods and sources of reference are critiqued. Results and analysis: The raw data from the own study was consolidated and used to test the hypotheses. This was an analysis that was grounded in all the previous data. The results from the primary data were compared to that with which was presented in the theoretical framework. To draw the conclusion in response to the stated purpose, as well as answering the questions. Conclusions: Altman’s Z-score works perfectly on the Swedish market. There is a lot of potential to use it as an indicator for all actors and industries.

Stability of the acoustic startle response and its modulation in children with typical development and those with autism spectrum disorders: A one-year follow-up2017In: Autism Research, ISSN 1939-3792, E-ISSN 1939-3806, Vol. 10, no 4, p. 673-679Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Auditory hyper-reactivity is a common sensory-perceptual abnormality that interrupts behavioral adaptations in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Recently, prolonged acoustic startle response (ASR) latency and hyper-reactivity to weak acoustic stimuli were reported in children with ASD. Indexes of ASR and its modulation are known to be stable biological markers for translational research in the adult population. However, little is known about the stability of these indexes in children. Thus, the objective of our study was to investigate the stability of neurophysiological ASR indexes in children with ASD and typical development (TD). Participants included 12 children with ASD and 24 with TD. Mean startle magnitudes to acoustic stimuli presented at 65-105 dB in increments of 10 dB were analyzed. Average peak startle latency (PSL), ASR modulation of habituation, and prepulse inhibition were also analyzed. These startle measures were examined after a follow-up period of 15.7±5.1 months from baseline. At both baseline and in the follow-up period, children with ASD had significantly greater startle magnitudes to weak stimuli of 65-85 dB and more prolonged PSL compared with controls. Intraclass correlation coefficients for these ASR measures between both periods were 0.499-0.705. None of the ASR measures differed significantly between the two periods. Our results suggest that prolonged PSL and greater startle magnitudes to weak stimuli in children with ASD might serve as moderately stable neurophysiological indexes of ASD.

Relationship between physiological and parent-observed auditory over-responsiveness in children with typical development and those with autism spectrum disorders.2018In: Autism, ISSN 1362-3613, E-ISSN 1461-7005, Vol. 22, no 3, p. 291-298Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this study was to investigate relationships between caregiver-reported sensory processing abnormalities, and the physiological index of auditory over-responsiveness evaluated using acoustic startle response measures, in children with autism spectrum disorders and typical development. Mean acoustic startle response magnitudes in response to 65-105 dB stimuli, in increments of 10 dB, were analyzed in children with autism spectrum disorders and with typical development. Average peak startle latency was also examined. We examined the relationship of these acoustic startle response measures to parent-reported behavioral sensory processing patterns in everyday situations, assessed using the Sensory Profile for all participants. Low-threshold scores on the Sensory Profile auditory section were related to acoustic startle response magnitudes at 75 and 85 dB, but not to the lower intensities of 65 dB. The peak startle latency and acoustic startle response magnitudes at low-stimuli intensities of 65 and 75 dB were significantly related to the low-threshold quadrants (sensory sensitivity and sensation avoiding) scores and to the high-threshold quadrant of sensation seeking. Our results suggest that physiological assessment provides further information regarding auditory over-responsiveness to less-intense stimuli and its relationship to caregiver-observed sensory processing abnormalities in everyday situations.

Acoustic Hyper-Reactivity and Negatively Skewed Locomotor Activity in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Exploratory Study2018In: Frontiers in Psychiatry, ISSN 1664-0640, E-ISSN 1664-0640, Vol. 9, article id 355Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Investigation of objective and quantitative behavioral phenotypes along with neurobiological endophenotypes might lead to increased knowledge of the mechanisms that underlie autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Here, we investigated the association between locomotor dynamics and characteristics of the acoustic startle response (ASR) and its modulation in ASD (n = 14) and typically developing (TD, n = 13) children. The ASR was recorded in response to acoustic stimuli in increments of 10 dB (65-105 dB SPL). We calculated the average ASR magnitude for each stimulus intensity and peak-ASR latency. Locomotor activity was continuously measured with a watch-type actigraph. We examined statistics of locomotor activity, such as mean activity levels and the skewness of activity. Children with ASD had a significantly greater ASR magnitude in response to a weak acoustic stimulus, which reflects acoustic hyper-reactivity. The skewness of all-day activity was significantly more negative in children with ASD than those with TD. Skewness of daytime activity was also more negative, although only of borderline statistical significance. For all children, the higher mean and more negatively skewed daytime activity, reflecting hyperactivity that was associated with sporadic large daytime "troughs," was significantly correlated with acoustic hyper-reactivity. The more negatively skewed locomotor activity occurring in the daytime was also associated with impaired sensorimotor gating, examined as prepulse inhibition at a prepulse intensity of 70 dB. This comprehensive investigation of locomotor dynamics and the ASR extends our understanding of the neurophysiology that underlies ASD.

Revisorns perspektiv på förväntningsgapet2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Mortality inequalities by occupational class among men in Japan, South Korea and eight European countries: a national register-based study, 1990–20152019In: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, ISSN 0143-005X, E-ISSN 1470-2738, Vol. 73, no 8, p. 750-758Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: We compared mortality inequalities by occupational class in Japan and South Korea with those in European countries, in order to determine whether patterns are similar.

Methods: National register-based data from Japan, South Korea and eight European countries (Finland, Denmark, England/Wales, France, Switzerland, Italy (Turin), Estonia, Lithuania) covering the period between 1990 and 2015 were collected and harmonised. We calculated age-standardised all-cause and cause-specific mortality among men aged 35–64 by occupational class and measured the magnitude of inequality with rate differences, rate ratios and the average inter-group difference.

Results: Clear gradients in mortality were found in all European countries throughout the study period: manual workers had 1.6–2.5 times higher mortality than upper non-manual workers. However, in the most recent time-period, upper non-manual workers had higher mortality than manual workers in Japan and South Korea. This pattern emerged as a result of a rise in mortality among the upper non-manual group in Japan during the late 1990s, and in South Korea during the late 2000s, due to rising mortality from cancer and external causes (including suicide), in addition to strong mortality declines among lower non-manual and manual workers.

Conclusion: Patterns of mortality by occupational class are remarkably different between European countries and Japan and South Korea. The recently observed patterns in the latter two countries may be related to a larger impact on the higher occupational classes of the economic crisis of the late 1990s and the late 2000s, respectively, and show that a high socioeconomic position does not guarantee better health.

Vem slår på djungeltrumman?: En studie om vilka som syns i public service-mediers artiklar om Järvaområdet2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
