Depressive symptoms, anxiety and academic motivation in youth: Do schools and families make a difference?2015Inngår i: Journal of Adolescence, ISSN 0140-1971, E-ISSN 1095-9254, Vol. 45, s. 174-182Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This longitudinal study aimed to examine the association between depressive and anxiety symptoms and academic motivation by gender, and whether positive school and family factors would be associated with academic motivation, in spite of the presence of such symptoms. Study participants were predominantly economically disadvantaged youths aged 13-15 years in a Northeastern US urban public school system. The Social and Health Assessment (SAHA) served as the basis for a survey undertaken in 2003 and 2004 with information being used from students who participated at both time points (N = 643). Multiple linear regression analyses showed that depressive symptoms were negatively associated with academic motivation, while anxiety was positively related to academic motivation in both genders. Teacher support, school attachment and parental control were positively related to academic motivation even in the presence of internalizing problems. The negative association of depressive symptoms with academic motivation may be potentially decreased by attachment to school.

Kompetensfrågan inom äldreomsorgen: Hur uppfattningar om kompetens formar omsorgsarbetet, omsorgsbehoven och omsorgsrelationen2014Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation examines how perceptions of competence affect the care of older persons, and the values and vocational conceptions of care work and care recipients that are tied to the perceptions of what skills that are needed and why. Competence is defined by three parts with relevance for the content of care work: what knowledge the care workers should have, what tasks they should perform and how they should respond to care recipients. The aim of this dissertation is to analyse how the care managers' and care workers' perceptions of competence form the direction of the care work and how that direction relates to the care recipients’ perceptions of and expectations on the care work.

The care work is characterised by what is analysed as an activation of the recipients - that the recipients themselves should perform as much of the care work as possible. The activation aims at managing the decay of the aging body and is motivated by a vocational conception of the care recipients as different from others, with designations as grateful and passive. This conception is analysed as generation character based on an idea among the care managers and care workers that the society in which the recipients grew up gave them certain cognitive prerequisites that have to be managed in the practical care work.

The care recipients in the study have opposing conceptions and perceptions of care work compared with the care managers and care workers. The recipients’ central objective with the care work is to prevent what has been interpreted as the disrepair of the home. The care recipients’ position in the organisation raises the problem of loyalty towards the care workers and in some sense the care managers. Their loyalty reduces their ability to complain and to influence their situation to the better.

The principle of help to self-help in Sweden: A study of representations and norms regarding old age and care needs and their moral and ethical implications for care work2018Inngår i: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to describe and analyse the principle of help to self-help in care work and the representations of and norms on old age and care needs supporting the principle in relation to moral and ethical aspects. The article is based on the results of a study conducted in a small rural Swedish municipality in 2006–2008 and a study conducted in a big city in 2014 and 2015. The material consists of interviews with first line managers, care workers and care receivers. The results of this article show that the principle of help to self-help in the care of older people exists in both public sector home care in a small municipality and a home care system in a major city with customer choice system. The results also show that representations of and norms on old age and care needs highlight the normative value of help to self-help, which has both ethical and moral dimensions. In the care of older people this is translated into care receivers maintaining their mental and physical strength which challenges the value of care receivers’ self-determination.

Nationella forskarskolan i socialt arbete - dess målgrupp och deltagare2011Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Research School in Social Work (RSSW) was initiated in 2008, as collaboration between all Swedish universities with post-graduate education in Social Work. The intention was to assemble a broader basis for subject specific postgraduate courses, to strengthen the identity of Social Work as a postgraduate subject and to work for an international collaboration.

This report describes the PhD students in social work and their experience of attending RSSW-courses. The report addresses how support, such as tutoring, affect participation in RSSW-courses and also highlights various aspects of the future, as the doctoral students’ future career paths.

Results of the study reveal that tutoring situation, gender, and age, among other things, affect the participation in and experience of RSSW. The study also shows that the subject orientations and course needs of doctoral students in Social Work are broad and varying. It is further a large part of the doctoral student group who would consider a future career outside the academy, which raises the question of where the scientific knowledge in the long run end up and what that means for the development of Social Work as a subject.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of the relationship between religiosity and burnout and to investigate whether the resources religiosity offers can counteract burnout. The study is of a qualitative nature as the empirical material has been gathered through six interviews. The analysis of the empirical material includes the theories KASAM by Aaron Antonovsky, social capital by Pierre Bourdieu and the theory of anomie by Emilé Durkheim. The results show that religiosity has health benefits for individuals and can act as a resource that counteracts burnout.

Frame Disputes or Frame Consensus?: "Environment" or "Welfare" First Amongst Climate Strike Protesters2020Inngår i: Sustainability, ISSN 2071-1050, E-ISSN 2071-1050, Vol. 12, nr 3, artikkel-id 882Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Present debates suppose a close linkage between economic, social, and environmental sustainability and suggest that individual wellbeing and living standards need to be understood as directly linked to environmental concerns. Because social movements are often seen as an avant-garde in pushing for change, this article analyzes climate protesters’ support for three key frames in current periods of social transformation, i.e., an "environmental", an "economic growth", and a "welfare" frame. The analyzed data material consists of survey responses from over 900 participants in six Global Climate Strikes held in Sweden during 2019. The article investigates the explanatory relevance of three factors: (a) political and ideological orientation, (b) movement involvement, and (c) social characteristics. The results indicate that climate protesters to a large degree support an environmental frame before an economic growth-oriented frame, whereas the situation is more complex regarding support for a welfare frame vis-á-vis an environmental frame. The strongest factors explaining frame support include social characteristics (gender) and protestors’ political and ideological orientation. Movement involvement has limited significance. The article shows how these frames form a fragment of the complexity of these issues, and instances of frame distinctions, hierarchies, and disputes emerge within the most current forms of climate change demonstrations.

    Abstract [sv]

Barnsexturism: Globaliseringens påverkan och researrangörernas förebyggande arbete2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Sjuksköterskornas revolution: En kvalitativ studie om organisatorisk identifikation2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper was that through discourse analysis look at how gender and the equality debate is created between two head debaters and commenter's on a forum. We have used Norbert Elias and John L. Scotson´s (1999) theory about Established and Outsiders to see power struggles between groups in the debate. With Jonathan Potters analysis tools in his book Representing Reality (1996) we were able to analyze the debate texts. Using discourse psychology, we were able to see how people use tactical discourse in their texts to represent themselves and the world in different ways. The texts we have looked at were articles written by our head debaters, Maria Sveland and Pär Ström who debate on equality. We completed the analysis of the articles with posts from the Internetforum Flashback concerning Pär Ström and equality. Our result showed that our agents were not debating anymore, instead the debate changed into a power struggle about the interpretation privilege. We observed that the head debaters separate worldviews and their methods of presentation of facts created extreme perceptions toward each other which represented something bigger.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of how young people's current identity is affected by their criminal background. We also want to understand the impact of resources in these young people’s social networks (that is their social capital) on their life course and formation and reformation of their identity. The theoretical frameworks used (as a tool to be able to analyze the empirical data) are theories of stigma, identity and social capital. The empirical study was conducted using semi-structured interviews that focused on questions about the life-story of informants. The empirical data is divided into different themes such as the informants' family relationships, neighborhood, friendship as well as their schooling. Further described is the informants’ first offense and the time spent at the prisons / "youth homes". We also discuss the informants’ distance from crime, the informants’ self-images at present and their idea about the future. Finally, we discuss how various factors during the life course shape and reshape the young criminal's identities, the factors that contributes to a break from criminal acts and the difficulties they encounter while dissociating from previous networks and life style.

All vård och omsorg av äldre personer ska vara av god kvalitet: Jakten på de svårfångade kvalitetsaspekterna i Stockholms stads valfrihetssystem2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims through a qualitative approach to study how agile methods are practised in a Swedish bank. The aim of the study is to understand the motives behind the choice to implement the agile methods, how the change process has been practised and finally what effects it gives to the employees in the company. Interviews with both the employees and the management of the bank has led to an understanding of their different views on the agile way of working through their individual experiences. Observations has visualised how the method is practiced, which contributed to a wider perspective. As analytical tools, theoretical concepts such as organizational recipes, the stakeholder model, process change, resistance, cynefin, human relations and efficiency are used. The result of the study shows that there has been both internal and external factors as the basis for the implementation of agile methods. The bank has intended for the change process to be agile with constant improvement as a goal. Uncertainty is an effect of the agile methods and is explained by a difficulty in applying the method throughout the business. The primary effect is increased efficiency, which is the management's main goal. How it affects the employees positively is through increased well-being for those motivated by the agile way of working and negative for those who is not. The study's conclusion is that it is difficult to implement a working method that generates positive effects for all employees.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the concept of social capital and to distinguish its different forms, focusing on their potential effects on health. According to many scholars, social capital comprises social networks, norms of reciprocity or social support and social trust. In this article the core element, the social network, has been further distinguished by the direction of ties and levels of formality, strength and diversity. In the past few years there has been increased interest in social capital in the health field and a great deal of research has suggested that social capital is generally positively related to health. However, little research has been conducted into how different forms of social capital or social networks influence health. What is the difference, for instance, between bonding and bridging social capital in terms of health outcomes? It is important to distinguish the different forms because they imply different resources, support and obligations. More research needs to be conducted into the different forms of social capital and their effects on health. A special focus should be placed on the health impacts of cross-cutting - or bridging and linking - forms of social capital.

    Abstract [en]

The state of public health in Russia is undoubtedly poor compared with other European countries. The health crisis that has characterised the transition period has been attributed to a number of factors, with an increasing interest being focused on the impact of social capital - or the lack of it. However, there have been relatively few studies of the relation between social capital and health in Russia, and especially in Moscow. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between social capital and self-rated health in Greater Moscow. The study draws on data from the Moscow Health Survey 2004, where 1190 Muscovites were interviewed. Our results indicate that among women, there is no relationship between any form of social capital and self-rated health. However, an association was detected between social capital outside the family and men’s self-rated health. Men who rarely or never visit friends and acquaintances are significantly more likely to report less than good health than those who visit more often. Likewise, men who are not members of any voluntary associations have significantly higher odds of reporting poorer health than those who are, while social capital in the family does not seem to be of importance at all. We suggest that these findings might be due to the different gender roles in Russia, and the different socializing patterns and values embedded in them. In addition, different forms of social capital provide access to different forms of resources, influence, and support. They also imply different obligations. These differences are highly relevant for health outcomes, both in Moscow and elsewhere.

Social capital - a mixed blessing for women? A cross-sectional study of different forms of social relations and self-rated depression in Moscow2016Inngår i: BMC Psychology, E-ISSN 2050-7283, Vol. 4, nr 1, artikkel-id 37Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Depression is a major health problem worldwide, especially among women. The condition has been related to a number of factors, such as alcohol consumption, economic situation and, more recently, to social capital. However, there have been relatively few studies about the social capital-depression relationship in Eastern Europe. This paper aims to fill this gap by examining the association between different forms of social capital and self-rated depression in Moscow. Differences between men and women will also be examined, with a special focus on women.

METHODS: Data was obtained from the Moscow Health Survey, which was conducted in 2004 with 1190 Muscovites aged 18 years or above. For depression, a single-item self-reported measure was used. Social capital was operationalised through five questions about different forms of social relations. Logistic regression analysis was undertaken to estimate the association between social capital and self-rated depression, separately for men and women.

RESULTS: More women (48 %) than men (36 %) reported that they had felt depressed during the last year. An association was found between social capital and reported depression only among women. Women who were divorced or widowed or who had little contact with relatives had higher odds of reporting depression than those with more family contact. Women who regularly engaged with people from different age groups outside of their families were also more likely to report depression than those with less regular contact.

CONCLUSIONS: Social capital can be a mixed blessing for women. Different forms of social relations can lead to different health outcomes, both positive and negative. Although the family is important for women's mental health in Moscow, extra-familial relations across age groups can be mentally distressing. This suggests that even though social capital can be a valuable resource for mental health, some of its forms can be mentally deleterious to maintain, especially for women. More research is needed on both sides to social capital. A special focus should be placed on bridging social relations among women in order to better understand the complex association between social capital and depression in Russia and elsewhere.

Social capital and community building through the Internet: A Swedish case study in a disadvantaged suburban area2007Inngår i: Sociological research online, ISSN 1360-7804, E-ISSN 1360-7804, Vol. 12, nr 5, s. online-Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The rapid diffusion of the Internet has considerable potential for enhancing the way people connect with each other, the root of social capital. However, the more the Internet is used for building social capital the greater will the impact be on those whose access and/or usage is curtailed. It is therefore important to investigate the impacts of Internet on groups at risk of digital and social exclusion. The aim of this article is to examine how the use of the Internet influences social capital and community building in a disadvantaged area. Quantitative and qualitative data from a case study in a suburban area of Stockholm are used to evaluate the social impacts of two community-based Internet projects: a Local Net and an IT-Cafe. Each of the projects was aimed at enhancing digital inclusion and social capital in a disadvantaged local community. The paper examines the extent to which use of the Internet is associated with an enhancement of social participation, social trust and local identity in the area. The Local Net appears to have had limited success in meeting its goals; the IT-Cafe was more successful. Visitors to the IT-Cafe had more local friends, expressed less social distrust, perceived less tension between different groups in the area and felt a much stronger sense of local identity than non-visitors. Visitors praised the IT-Cafe as providing a meeting-place both online and offline. The Internet was used for networking, exchange of support and information seeking. Although it is difficult to establish causal priorities, the evidence suggests that an IT-Cafe, combining physical with virtual and the local with the global, may be especially well suited to build social capital and a sense of local community in a disadvantaged area. The importance of social, rather than solely technological, factors in determining the impact of the Internet on social capital and community in marginal areas is stressed.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how ADHD is discussed in the Swedish mass media. We have examined 21 articles from Aftonbladet, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter, Göteborgs-Posten and Svenska Dagbladet. All articles are reviewed from the newspapers online edition.

Theories used are Erving Goffman’s theory of Stigma and Michael Foucault´s theory of categorization as well as Göran Palm's, Renée Skogersson's and Anders R. Olsson's theories about mass media. We have also used relevant literature. The main method we used is of Norman Fairclough´s three-dimensional critical discourse analysis where we in most parts have focused on the text analysis and also with the help of text coding system.

One of our conclusions is that ADHD is sometimes described with negative words such as "brat" or "problem child". With these words we discovered the existence of underlying messages of the articles that are not expressed clearly. ADHD-medications were often described negative in the articles and also the reasons why a person might actually have ADHD were found to be discussed in the mass media.

    Abstract [en]

This paper is a case study of a local labour market project. The aim of the study is to investigate the staff’s way of working with unemployed people, receiving social assistance, in order to reduce the payment of social assistance in four adjacent city districts of Stockholm. Other objectives of the study are to investigate which criteria the staff uses when selecting participants for the project, in which way the participants’ background affects the measures taken by the staff and how the staff experiences working as part of a project. A short summary of the social services development during the twentieth century and urban politics in the 1990’s in Sweden is used as a background for the local labour market project. The theories used deal with the social services strategies concerning unemployed receivers of social assistance, the participants’ background with particular emphasis on ethnicity and gender, project work and the special case of public projects. The study is based on interviews with four employees. Some of the conclusions are that the selection criteria are put up as criteria for not being selected as a participant and that the staff combines previously developed methods in order to reduce the payment of social assistance. The participants’ background is evaluated individually and the staff shows a certain reluctance to categorize the participants according to ethnicity and gender. The staff communicates an ambiguous image of working in a project by describing it partly as an inspiring challenge but also as involving some uncertainties regarding the terms of employment.

Unga kvinnors syn på sin roll i samhället2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Smoking cessation and desire to stop smoking in nine countries of the former soviet union2013Inngår i: Nicotine & tobacco research, ISSN 1462-2203, E-ISSN 1469-994X, Vol. 15, nr 9, s. 1628-1633Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Smoking rates and corresponding levels of premature mortality from smoking-related diseases in the former Soviet Union (fSU) are among the highest in the world. To reduce this health burden, greater focus on smoking cessation is needed, but little is currently known about rates and characteristics of cessation in the fSU. Methods: Nationally representative household survey data from a cross-sectional study of 18,000 respondents in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine were analyzed to describe patterns of desire and action taken to stop smoking, quit ratios (former ever-smokers as a percent of ever-smokers, without a specified recall period), and help used to stop smoking. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze characteristics associated with smoking cessation and desire to stop smoking. Results: Quit ratios varied from 10.5% in Azerbaijan to 37.6% in Belarus. About 67.2% of respondents expressed a desire to quit, and 64.9% had taken action and tried to stop. The use of help to quit was extremely low (12.6%). Characteristics associated with cessation included being female, over 60, with higher education, poorer health, lower alcohol dependency, higher knowledge of tobacco's health effects, and support for tobacco control. Characteristics associated with desire to stop smoking among current smokers included younger age, poorer health, greater knowledge of tobacco's health effects, and support for tobacco control. Conclusions: Quit ratios are low in the fSU but there is widespread desire to stop smoking. Stronger tobacco control and cessation support are urgently required to reduce smoking prevalence and associated premature mortality.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish educational reforms in the beginning of the 1990s, introducing a public-funded voucher system, free school choice and the right to run schools as commercial enterprises, had an important impact on upper secondary education. The Stockholm region, the most populous in Sweden, offered favourable conditions for the growth of a previously non-existent educational market. A massive expansion of independent schools took place, managed primarily by larger companies, along with the extensive marketing of profiled study programmes and the import of management models from the private sector. In 2011 alone, schools competed for 75 000 pupils representing an annual economic value of approximately 8.5 billion SEK.

Covering the period 1988 to 2011, this thesis analyses the relationship between the educational market and upper secondary education as a social field structured by the educational strategies of social groups. Building on Bourdieu’s relational sociology, the study combines quantitative and qualitative methods, using correspondence analysis as a major analytical tool.

While free school choice and the voucher system established a supply-demand relationship between schools and families and pupils, the analysis shows that the market has submitted to the same forces that structure the field of upper secondary education within which it unfolds, primarily the volume and composition of symbolic and other assets that students, families and schools possess. In fact, the social structure of the field of upper secondary education in Stockholm remains remarkably stable over time, opposing on the one hand female and male dominated education and on the other hand education with high social and scholarly recruitment to that with low. Euclidean clustering analysis unveils a complex social structure reflecting how the increasingly differentiated educational supply has adapted to the needs of various social groups. Elite schools, market-oriented schools and market-exposed schools develop different strategies in the battle over pupils. Competing amongst themselves for pupils rich in inherited and acquired capital, the elite schools withdraw from the openly market-oriented approach that characterises the other type of schools and instead opt for more subtle, long-term strategies for building up trust from their audience, involving investments in staff and other institutional assets.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how authors on Instagram describe masculinity norms. We aimed to further analyse how the authors illustrate the consequences of masculinity norms in relation to social problems. The study is based on 25 posts from authors on Instagram which were analysed by a content analysis method. The theoretical framework in this study consists of Connells (1995, 2008) theory of masculinity. A conception of socialization is also included (Connell 1995, 2009). The results indicated that masculinity norms have a negative impact on men by how they are expected to be, what they are expected to feel, what is allowed for them to talk about, how they should act and what sexual desires they should have. Furthermore, the study showed how masculinity norms lead up to social problems such as reluctance to seek help and using violence against others. The main conclusion of this study was that social problems often are based on the fact that men, due to present masculinity norms, are in need of proving, defending or maintaining their masculinities in different contexts. The man himself along with everyone around him are the one who pays for the consequences of masculinity norms.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine how discourses on parenthood are articulated and negotiated by social workers in Sweden, in relation to handling legal parenthood after transnational surrogacy. The study is based on interviews with eight different social workers from different parts of Sweden. To interpret the material from the interviews, I use discourse theoretical framework – combined with an understanding of the social workers as street-level bureaucrats. Other particular theoretical perspectives that have been important in my research include theories on kinship, concepts of bodily and genetic citizenship and neo-liberal discourse. My study shows that different perceptions of certain key concepts (such as social-, bodily- or genetic family ties) underpin the discourses of parenthood, depending on context. In my research I have found that the process of deciding who is the legal parent of a child born through surrogacy, challenge the presumption of motherhood, and instead the genetic and intended father remains the certain parent of the child.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the underlying mechanisms behind mental illness of women. A limitation was made to young women with an academic education who early in their careers became sick because of mental illness. The theoretical framework for the study consisted of Karasek and Theorell’s demand, control and support model. In addition, Bauman's theory about identity was used as a supplement of the category of identity included in Karasek and Theorell’s model. In order to answer the research question, a qualitative approach was chosen consisting of five interviews with young women who have been on sick leave. The results show that the respondents had high demands and low control at their workplaces before they became sick. In addition, the respondents had good social support from colleagues and outside the workplace. The social support from managers varied and common for all respondents is that they did not use their complete social support weeks before they got sick. Regarding identity, the respondents have shown that they have a performance-based self-esteem. In the discussion, the results show that identity can affect women’s ability to use social support, which can contribute to mental illness.
