Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Research has shown that students with another mother tongue than Swedish terminate elementary school with lower grades in all subjects, compared to students having Swedish as a mother tongue. This fact justifies further research on the forms of teaching Swedish as a second language. Attention has been given to the fact that the students with another mother tongue than Swedish have to cope with "dual learning". Parallel to the learning of a second language they need to obtain knowledge in all other subjects. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the School organise the work with students having another mother tongue than Swedish, and to find out how teachers in other subjects solve the problem of having students that struggle with "dual learning". The questions I will be answering in this paper is:

    1. How do the school organise the teaching of students having Swedish as second language (SVA-students), when in comes to improving language skills and obtaining knowledge?
    2. How has this particular organisation affected the work of teachers in other subjects?
    3. Which are the advantages and disadvantages of this form to organise the work and teaching, according to the teachers involved?

The method used in the investigation is "qualitative deep interviews". The theoretical points of departure are Haug’s concepts of "excluding integration" and "including integration". In this analysis I have furthermore used organisational theories like "the learning of organisations" and the "learning cycle" from Kolb. In the didactical analysis I have used "theories of writing" from various authors and "theories of language" from Vygotskij.

The result of the investigation shows that the investigated school gone from "excluding integration" to "including integration". Nowadays the responsibility for SVA-students are distributed among all teachers in the school, implying a substantial changes in the role of teachers. The role of the SVA-teachers has also developed simultaneously into something which could be described as tutor or mentor to teachers of the other subjects. The positive and clear response from the school management to these initiatives has also been of great significance. In this process the book "Schaffholding Language – Schaffholding Learning" of Pauline Gibbon has played an important role and has lead to the continuous training and development of methods at the school.

The role of grammatical development in oral assessment2019In: Widening Contexts for Processability Theory: Theories and issues / [ed] Anke Lenzing, Howard Nicholas & Jana Roos, John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2019, p. 371-390Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Tests today are usually based on a communicative view of language, with less focus on grammar. In this chapter, a study is presented that investigates whether there is a difference in terms of grammatical development between a group of test-takers who passed and a group who failed an oral language test. The study addresses theories of SLA and language testing, i.e., Processability Theory and the model of Communicative Language Ability, the construct of the test. Data from learners' test performances were analysed using PT in order to see whether there was a consistent relationship between the PT stage analysis and the results derived from the test. The comparison shows a clear difference between the test-takers who passed and those who failed in terms of grammatical development. This implies a correlation between grammatical development and communicative competence in general which may indicate that PT constitutes a useful basis for oral assessment.

Effekter av ämnesintegrerad undervisning i akademiskt skrivande2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Introduction to Academic Writing from an Academic Literacies Approach2014In: ICED 2014 Educational Development in a Changing World: [on line] proceedings, 2014, p. -10Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In our paper we present a pilot project were we introduce new students to read, write and search for academic texts. We assume an ‘academic literacies’ approach, where these activities are seen as social practices that have to be practically acquired in authentic, meaningful contexts within the disciplines, rather than in separate courses and other support structures.

    Abstract [en]

Travel literature and especially the ”adventure story” has excited young British boys for over two centuries. However, it has also been a vehicle for the assertion of male dominance and European supremacy. The story of a British man who goes to the colonies, performs some test which is essentially a test of his manliness, and whose compulsory victory marks the end of the book, has been a central myth in colonial masculinity.

Through looking at three Anglo-Saxon male travel writers from the 20th century, this essay aims to study the different ways in which Western male identity is shaped against an Indian background. The novels analysed are Topee and Turban or Here and There in India by H.A. Newell, the Don Juan- tetralogy by Carlos Castaneda and Are You Experienced by William Sutcliffe. Whether the Self is defined against the Indian other; by identification with the Indian other, or through deconstructing the notion of an Indian other, and what role femininity plays, are the central themes of this essay.

Theory paramount to the analysis has been Ann McClintock’s discourse on the feminisation of the colonized country; Simon Gikandi’s assumption that imperialism was crucial in shaping British identity, and Gayatri Spivak’s notion of epistemic violence.

kärlek och förändring i femtiotalets Paris: Françoise Sagan och Claire Etcherelli2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this essay is to get deeper into the mysteries of love as they manifest themselves as most open: in literature. I have studied the two French writers Claire Etcherelli and Françoise Sagan, both writing about love in the 50’s Paris. While Etcherelli’s love takes place between factory workers, Sagan’s scene is the upper middle class. My question is how love manifests itself in such similar but yet different surroundings: is love a class question?

Looking at the structure present in the novels and how the love story proceeds, I have discovered that although the conditions are fundamentally different, the structure is almost identical. This is itself an ideological fact. The structure shows that in both cases, love appears as a solution to an unsatisfactory situation. The man enters the novel when the heroine knows she needs change. With him, she then embarks on a project for change. This project implies for Sagan a journey towards nature and the dissolution of the Self, whereas for Etcherelli it means a greater involvement in the political struggle and the constitution of an identity. The journeys undertaken are therefore diametrically opposed, yet the way they are taken about, is the same. Both authors present a vision of love that is comparable to many of 20th century theorists. Whereas some theorists, e.g. Denis de Rougemont and Slavoj Žižek, claim that love essentially is a lie: it says one thing and wants another, it is actually the want of suffering or a power game, others such as Erich Fromm and Francesco Alberoni speak about it as a revolutionary movement towards social change and knowledge of the human soul. Both Sagan and Etcherelli support the latter view. Love is in their novels a metaphor for hope, it comes forth as a firm belief in the possibility of change, social as well as existential.

Foreign language communication anxiety in correlation to the sociolinguistic variables gender, age, performance and multilingual competence: A linguistic pilot study of Swedish students’ attitudes2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This data-driven linguistic study investigates if levels of different types of foreign language communication anxiety, such as for speaking, listening, writing and/or reading that Swedish students in compulsory school (grades 7-9) and upper secondary school experience when communicating in English in their foreign language classes have any correlation to sociolinguistic variables such as gender, age, performance and/or multilingual competence. The compiled and analyzed self-report data have successfully provided a base for implied correlations between the different sociolinguistic variables and language anxiety. The most prominent indications of correlation to anxiety are the variables gender, performance (course grades) and linguistic competence. The age variable also showed indications of correlation but was less pronounced than the others. It was also found that students generally feel more and/or higher anxiety when speaking the target language than the other types of communication. The didactic implications that this study contributes to is that “communicating” as an activity conducted in the foreign language classroom needs to be further defined and broken down into specific types of skills (speaking, writing, listening, reading) and also be approached accordingly. This also implies that further research is needed to thoroughly examine the correlational effects different sociolinguistic variables have on the foreign language learning.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper was to examine how ”the other” is portrayed in Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of darkness from a postcolonial perspective. Thru this analysis determine if and in what way the novel may be beneficial to education surrounding postcolonial perspectives in the subject Swedish at upper secondary school. Thru close reading of the text focusing on the novels portrayal of “the other”, the analysis concludes that the novel gives a stereotypical and dichotomous picture rooted in the novels contemporary science and culture of the western world. The way “the other” is portrayed in Joseph Conrad´s Heart of darkness does not consist with the fundamental values of the Swedish upper secondary school. The analysis has concluded that the novels potential as an educational tool in the education surrounding postcolonial perspectives is limited due to it´s lack of non-European perspectives.

"Sprickor i tillvaron": En fenomenologisk studie av det absurda i Jonas Karlssons "Fakturan" och "Högläsning 2" utifrån Albert Camus absurdism i Myten om Sisyfos och Främlingen2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The absurd is a widespread term to describe literature today and in this essay I am interested in what parts of a literary text that can be defined as absurd. With help from the French-Algerian writer Albert Camus definition of the absurd in The Myth of Sisyphus (1942) and the absurd parts in his novel The Stranger (1942) I will examine the absurd in two of the Swedish writer Jonas Karlsson’s short stories. It is a phenomenological study of the short stories "Fakturan" and "Högläsning 2" that can be found in Spelreglerna (2011). The phenomenological reading consists people’s experiences and what is happening in their consciousness before, during and after experiencing it. Camus description of the absurd is the foundation for my analysis of Karlsson. Karlsson’s short stories have interesting similarities with Camus description of the absurd, which is fascinating because of their different backgrounds. My aim with the essay is to analyze the absurd in Karlsson’s short stories, both through parallels to Camus and without.

Sangvinolent berättande: En studie av Yu Huas roman En handelsman i blod2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present MA thesis analyzes how body and blood functions as historical and narrative elements in Yu Hua's novel Chronicle of a Blood Merchant (1995). In the novel, the story and the plot can not be regarded as disparate items; the two levels of the text are tightly interwoven by what the thesis introduces as a sangvinolent narration. The term conceptualizes the use of blood as a structural element and the thrust of the text, in this case how the ability to sell blood is a prerequisite for the story and the plot.

Close readings reveal the structural correlations between the blood-selling main-character Xu Sanguan in the plot on the one hand, and in the story on the other, which can be detected to have, inter alia, an effect on the temporality of the narrative. Themes linked to identity, belonging and survival (performativity, mimicry, reification and alienation) permeate the text. In the novel the body and bodily fluids are sacrificed in order to form and enforce perceptions of identity and societal roles.

The rhetorical use of ‘blood and tears’ (Ch. xue yu lei) indicates thematic connections to the Chinese revolutionary literature, and furthermore, the use of flesh and blood can be read in relation to the cannibalistic discourses crucial to Chinese modernity since Lu Xun.

Spinnarfjärilens doft: En narratologisk läsning av Gabrielle Wittkops roman Le Nécrophile2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present BA thesis is an analysis and a close reading of the French author Gabrielle Wittkop's novel Le Nécrophile (1972). The analysis consists of two parts. The first part focuses on the story and can be described as an attempt to interpret the engine of the history. The second part of the analysis focuses on the narrative; how the story is told. Le Nécrophiles main motif is re-encoding the representation of death in art and literature, traditionally conceived as a beautiful female corpse. The narrative embodies death as different of body types – men, women, old people, childen - and hence avoids to produce death as the female Other. By the use of different methods, such as metaphores, focalizing etc., the corpse becomes something more than a passive object, now threatening and interacting. In the novel necrophilia is described as a higher form of love. The historical view of sexuality as divided into high/low is strongly codified from a gender perspective; the higher form of love is associated with masculinity and the lower form with femininity. In Le Nécrophile the classification of high/low is based on life and death instead of masculinity and femininity; a new way of staging the binery pairs high/low.

Maskulinitet och makt: En studie av Georgs maskulinitet i Lars Noréns drama Natten är dagens mor2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the following essay I have read the drama Natten är dagens mor (The Night is the Day's Mother) by Lars Norén. My main focus has been on the older brother Georg. By using post structuralist gender theories I have sought answers to the following two questions: How is Georg's masculinity constructed and maintained, when seen from a gender perspective? What power structures arise between Georg's and the other men's masculinities? In my analysis I have approached Georg via three perspectives. First, I have by the help of Judith Butler's theory concerning gender performative actions tried to define the men's gender codes. I have used queer theory to show how the different masculinities can be understood as each others opposites. This way Georg's masculinity was defined as hegemonic in contrast to his brother's and father's. When Georg's masculinity is questioned he answers with violence in order to defend it. I have then used R. W. Connell's masculinity theory to show how the use of violence is a sign that the hegemonic masculinity is weak. The only power he has left over his brother's and father's masculinities is the one held by force and the one he has through his mother. As the violence increases, he loses power and as his mother suddenly chooses to stay with her husband instead of leaving, he has no other way out but to leave.

    Abstract [en]

This article addresses the analogy between language and location, and between travel and interpretation, in the hitherto little-studied poetry ofW.G. Sebald. Its primary example is 'Day Return', a two-part poem from the early 1980s, which describes a train trip through East Anglia to London and back. This poem develops the analogy between language and location in various ways. For one thing, it is a bilingual text: it intersperses a number of English lines among the German ones, evoking the linguistic ambiguity inherent in the experience of the expatriate writer. Moreover, as Sebald's lyrical 'I' passes Ipswich, Romford, Stratford and Maryland on the way to Liverpool Street Station, he weaves these sites together in an intertextual web involving, among others, Dante, Kafka and Samuel Pepys. Finally, the journey is allegorically construed by the poetic voice as a descent into (and return from) the underworld. While many of these themes are familiar from Sebald's later work, the value of his poems does not depend upon their relation to his canonised prose: they are fascinating literary constructs in their own right, deserving of close critical attention.

Att övertyga med hot i filmklipp: En semiotisk och retorisk undersökning av Sverigedemokraternas filmklipp: Jimmie Åkesson – Snart är det val2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Political parties use different strategies to convince voters to vote for them, and with the technological evolution of our time short movie clips are used, now more than ever before, to accomplish these kinds of tasks. However, a political movie clip that separates itself from other political movie clips is Jimmie Åkesson – Snart är det val. This clip is not trying to persuade the voter to vote for the Sweden democrats because of their political plans, instead it tries to convince the voter of a threat that can destroy Sweden in the nearby future if the voter doesn’t vote for the Sweden democrats in the coming election.

This essay seeks to investigate how Jimmie Åkesson – Snart är det val constructs this threat, how the threat becomes realistic and in what ways the threat is used in the movie clip to convince the Swedish voter to vote for the Sweden democrats. To investigate this the essay uses a semiotic analysis to dissemble the movie clip in order to understand how the threat is constructed. Furthermore, rhetorical perspectives such as identification, visualizing rhetoric, ethos, pathos, logos and figures of style are used to discuss how the threat becomes realistic and how it is used to win votes.

The conclusion of the essay is that the movie clip constructs two different threats in two different realities by using semiotic resources such as fast shifting scenes, documenting images, music, sounds, environments, characters and a narrating voice in a projecting narrative. More specifically these resources create a true dark reality and a happy delusional reality. In these two realities, the two different threats are found. The first threat is the immigrants that are illustrated as an enemy that destroys Sweden and thus creates the true dark reality where the voters and the Sweden democrats also are illustrated. The other threat is other political parties in Sweden and the Swedish media because they are illustrated in the happy delusional reality and therefore can’t help the voter that is portrayed in the true dark reality. In that sense, the two threats are used to convince the voter to vote for the Sweden democrats because they are the only political party that is located in the true dark reality and therefore are the only ones that understand and can solve the problem that causes the true dark reality. Furthermore, these threats become more realistic by enforcing an emotion of fear for the true dark reality with semiotic resources and also by concretizing this reality with documenting images, characters and sounds. These threats also become more realistic because the semiotic resources create imagistic arguments that allows the mind to take shortcuts when conclusions are made.

Can chick-lit be canonical?: a feminist reading och Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Candace Bushnell's Sex and the city2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

By using Austen’s and Bushnell’s two novels as my primary sources I hope to find out whether what has been seen as typically female themes, plots and settings are perceived as less important from a canonical viewpoint. Do the terms “chick-lit” and “women’s literature” determine the status of a novel? I hope to find out what made Austen an esteemed writer and if the same criteria of evaluation can be applied to Bushnell. Are there any similarities between today’ most famous “chick-lit” author who gained her fame by writing about women and their sex lives in an unromantic and shocking fashion, and a pre-Victorian author whose works are part of the literary canon?

"Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land": En nivåstudie av produktion, struktur, ensamhet och begär i John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

My main purpose with this paper of John Steinbecks Of mice and men is to both analyze the long-lived structures and the unique individual destinies of the novel. I employ the method of the historical Annales-movement and use three divided levels in my analysis to try to capture these high structures and low moments of humanity in Structure, Konjuncture and the Individuality. The first level, Structure, is used to see how long-lived almost invisible geographic structures set the human act of condition. The second level, Konjuncture, is easier to grasp in understanding of time and embraces for example economic structures as the industrialism. The last level of Individuality is the fastest in time and easiest to understand but in the long run also the least important. Humans are controlled by structures and norms. I try to inspect what these three levels look like in Of Mice and Men and how they affect each other and the main characters of the novel.

I make use of Foucault and Butler in the Konjuncture-level to explore how power, production and discourse create structures that affects the working man and the “non-working” woman in Of Mice and Men. I adopt Butler to see how Steinbeck creates gender through clothes and working tools. In the Indivual-level we can see the effects of the other levels in the characters actions. For example how their sexual preferences are effects of the power-structure of the production (Rubin and Foucault), how a society see images of filth or purity when someone differ from the norm (Douglas and Foucault) and how we sacrifice one member of the social group to contain stability when chaos threatens (Girard).

    Abstract [en]

Thanks to preschool Bamse and the entire literature I have related to in my degree work I have both got an explanation for my question at issue, and a clearer insight for my main question "The treating of bilingual children after acclimatization". I have within the investigation chosen to study on the basis of the educationalists perspective on bilingual way of working. My question at issue on this investigation has been to see how a regular day of language development looks and how the group of children developed the Swedish language.

The purpose with my degree work was to be able to get an insight in the educationalists way of working and methods and also to see how the educationalists treats bilingually individuals after the acclimatization. I have when it concerns choice of method and material collections assumed from a qualitative investigation and gathered the material with help from participation notices and interviews.

Down here I will sum up the investigation in poles and describe the aspect the informants have pointed out under the interviews.

Bilingually children’s develop the Swedish language with the educationalists by:

    • Converse and communicate with the child
    • Name word and objects
    • Using the body language at conversations
    • Building security in the group of children
    • Integrate the playing to a language development in the regular day
    • Confirm the child’s meaning at different connections
    • Create a god relation with the individual
    • Take part of the mother tongue in the program to name single words
    • Giving the individual the opportunity to express their thoughts freely
    • Place the child at the center of attention among the group of children
    • Take part of the parents experience with the mother tongue
    • Giving space to create own imagination with the playing for the individual
    • Have the language as an approach

Even the theories mediate that the educationalists shall promote the work with bilingual children so that they control the purpose and see the meaning of activity. The play shall be reason for all activity to increase the will for the group of children. Litterateur also brings out that the preschool program shall establish that the individual gets the opportunity to develop its mother tongue to increase the understanding of the Swedish language. Finally I want to point out that on the basis of the interviews and observations on the preschool program, the educationalists consider that the mother tongue is like a foundation for bilingually children so that they will develop the Swedish language.

En feministisk queeranalys av Gerd Brantenbergs Egalias döttrar: Hur språket upprätthåller de heteronormativa strukturerna2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The idea of this paper is to try to give the novel of Gerd Brantenberg, Egalias döttrar, another profundity. To take the book to another dimension, by using the theory of Judith Butler, queer, and her criticism of the Monique Wittig’s earlier theories of the subject queer. I examine how the language is used through a queer analysis by performing a closely reading. My position is that the language assumes a heterosexual norm, which is unveiled by queer. Further I analyse the impor-tance of penetration in the heterosexual society.

Rhythmic Tempi Analysis and Genus Analysis of Elfriede Jelinek’s Novel Die Liebhaberinnen: Mathematical Narratology Model2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This interdisciplinary study is exploring several fields of scientific research ‒ Literary Criticism, Mathematical Narratology, Structural Semiotics, Feminism and Intersectionality, and applying their theoretical and methodological apparatus for analysis of Elfriede Jelinek’s novel Die Liebhaberinnen (Women as Lovers). The study is focusing on quantitative and qualitative analysis of five rhythmic tempi ‒ pause, ellipsis, summary, slow down and scene. Rhythmic tempi are analyzed based on Mieke Bal’s narratological model which defines tempi through a set of mathematical comparisons between time of the fabula TF and time of the story TS. For quantitative statistical analysis of rhythmic tempi, it is made a limited strategic choice selection of three chapters, first, middle and last one. It was shown that combined rhythmic tempi frequencies in three selected chapters are: 48% pause, 26% scene, 15% ellipsis, 7% slow-down and 4% summary, while for each selected chapter a set of rhythmic tempi is unique. For qualitative analysis of rhythmic tempi, the examples of each tempo are randomly chosen throughout the entire text of the novel. The narrator is using different rhythmic tempi to present the novel’s narrative messages about intersectional conflicts of dominance. Based on the qualitive and quantitive analysis, it is suggested a concept of intrafeminine subjugation, describing women’s intersectional dominance and their interpellation in a patriarchal society. The results of the study can be used in multidisciplinary analysis of literary texts and in education.

    Abstract [en]

The study analysis Anaïs Nin's work, Henry & June from a queer theoretical perspective. The purpose is to show what the work makes with text and how it produces ambivalence with sex and gender and thereby demonstrate the queer leakage in heteronormative performativities. The first part analyzes how it is working with self-representation in diary form. In order to view the work historically and linguistically the work has been related to analyzes and essays by other researchers mentioned in the analysis. The analysis shows that the writer Anaïs Nin has a clear agenda with her work. Nin want to develop an alternative approach to sex, gender and marriage.

    Abstract [en]

The main subject for this paper is to compare Eugene O’Neill’s play Long day’s journey into night with the Swedish playwright Lars Norén´s Och ge oss skuggorna. Norén´s play is based on a biographical material from O’Neill’s life; therefore I will also compare the play with two biographical analyses on O’Neill. For that I have chosen Doris Alexander’s Eugene O’Neill’s last plays: Separating art from autobiography and Stephen A Black´s Eugene O’Neill: Beyond Mourning and tragedy. The main question in this paper will be: what is the picture of Eugene O´Neill that Norén portrays in the play Och ge oss skuggorna.

Språket vår Järnbörd: Språket spelar roll2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I make an analysis of the play Järnbörd (By burning Iron) written by the swedish author Magnus Dahlström. In this play all the characters has committed horrible crimes wich they easily describes the violence. The starting-point of my analysis is the text itself and not any stage-setting. The reason for this is that I find it interesting to see what can be found in the text only. I investigate if the language itself can tell something.

Furthermore I discuss Magnus Dahlström´s literary language and if he has any distinguishing quality, and if so what it may be. I examine each characters discourse and I describe certain aspects of the language such as the characters incapability to really interact and how the violence is described.

I focus on the text and it´s characteristic elements. My main sources is therefore two literature studies. Dramatiskt berättande (“Dramatic telling”) by Mats Ödeen and Drama i tre avsnitt (“Drama in three parts”) by Gunnar Brandell. In particular I use the chapters in which they discuss the language and it´s significance in the world of drama. In the study Det moderna dramats teori 1880-1950 (“Theory of the modern drama 1880-1980”) by Peter Szondi, he writes about how the classical drama went from taking place between persons to take place inside the characters mind. I use this study to discuss Järnbörd as a modern play.

I also want to discuss the discourse from a philosophical aspect of language. I discuss Emilé Benveniste and his thoughts about language as a ”tool” of communication. Furthermore I discuss Friedrich Nietzsche´s study Om moralens härstamming (Geniality of morals), in which he writes about our human moral as something created and not as some “higher power” that judges us.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate, describe and discuss the views of a group of adolescents on their identity and the process of second language acquisition. They all came to Sweden and started studying in Swedish schools in the last three years without any knowledge of the Swedish language.

The study has been conducted with respect to the adolescents own perspectives and what they consider important.

The methods used are group discussions/ interviews, observations in class and informal discussions with teachers and adolescents.

Their voices are described and discussed in this paper. One must take into consideration that there is no objective of being neutral or to generalize the results to any other group or category. On the contrary the study has involved critical self- scrutiny and active reflexivity according to ethnographic tradition.

Symbolic interaction has provided a theoretical framework for the study. Looking into how social identities may be constructed or communicated from the adolescents voices and looking in to their use of language the study reveals that several expectations and situations need’ to be met by different identities. The adolescents struggle to be accepted as members of the mainstream although they are a linguistic minority.

They are convinced that second language acquisition is the key to success although the same language still is a hindrance to negotiation of identity in the school context. Their strategy to be recognised as equals manifests itself in submissive attitudes and compliance. The adolescents explain this kind of behaviour as a natural attitude from the schools in their first country. The adolescents in this study are motivated. They do not see adaptation as a loss of anything rather as an enriched life experience and nutrition to their double identities. They are not victims of language discrimination but subjected to symbolic power influencing them in their actions. They are still working on their identities, their language acquisition and adaptation to expectations in different situations. They are, and will be, multidimensional personalities.

Tense and aspect errors in junior high school students’ writing: A study of risk taking2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

English is taught in Swedish schools as a foreign language. The students are at different levels, and most of them try to achieve a higher proficiency level. While the extent to which students are successful at learning a language depends on many different factors. Previous studies have shown that students who are open to taking risks in their production are at an advantage.

The present study investigated 80 texts written by students in the seventh and the ninth grade. The main aim was to investigate to what extent errors and complexity levels can be explained in relation to risk taking. In more detail, the study examined differences between the grades in terms of degree of syntactic complexity and what kinds of aspect and tense errors were made. To be able to investigate the errors an approach called Error Analysis was used.

The results showed that for both grades, substitution errors were the most common error and there was a significant difference between the grades (p<0.001); however, the other errors showed no significant differences. Regarding the complexity levels, there was a highly significant difference (significance level p<0.001) for the least complex sentences, but there were no significant differences between the grades for the highest and second highest levels of complexity.

The results furthermore suggest that there is a correlation between risk taking and a higher likelihood of making errors, as a large proportion of the erroneous sentences written by students from the ninth grade were found in syntactically complex sentences. Most of the errors made by students in the seventh grade were found in less syntactically complex sentences however.

Det queera jagets kamp för existens: En queerteoretisk närläsning av Karin Boyes roman Kris2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay provides a queer theoretical, non-biographic reading of Karin Boye's novel Crisis from 1934. The analysis aims to focus on how Christian faith, constituting a major part of the book, can be connected to and be read as a symbol of heteronormativity. Furthermore the analysis describes how the queer aspect in the novel reveals heteronormative and intersectional structures. The investigation is set against previous research on Boye’s literary works, and other queer theoretical texts to show how the protagonist Malin Forst’s queer desire and identity develops as opposed to authoritative voices present in her life.

    Abstract [de]

    Abstract [de]

Du och Jag är Volvos riddare i kampen om svenskheten: En multimodal språkanalys av Volvos reklamfilm Vintersaga2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

German-Jewish Nobel Prize laureate Nelly Sachs is remembered for her poetry written while in exile in Sweden. In this essay I have tried to examine how the exile situation shaped her poetry and what different kinds of stages the poetry went through. For example - how it went from being dark and painful when concerning the holocaust, into light and hopeful with reconciliation during the last years of her life.

The exile turned out to be a catalyst to her poetry.

"SATS-medlemmar är lyckligare, mindre oroliga och mindre deprimerade...": En studie av hur modelläsaren konstrueras i SATS Magazine2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
