    Abstract [sv]

Problems and potential solutions to effective communication among stakeholders in the Baltic Sea shipping for reduced air pollution: Outcomes from a survey2013Inngår i: Clean Shipping Currents, ISSN 2242-9794, Vol. 2, nr 5, s. -33Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This report presents the results of a web survey distributed to stakeholders in the Baltic Sea marine sector regarding environmental communication on air pollution from shipping. The survey was carried out in the spring and summer of 2012. Drawing on the literature on risk communication and environmental governance, the main focus was placed on so-called communication barriers, that is, possible hindrances to effective communication among stakeholders on how to reduce air pollution without threatening sector competitiveness. The results show that although there is a dense networking among stakeholders in this sector, there is a demand for improvements in communication in (a) exploratory phases among broad groups of stakeholders and (b) operational phases among selected groups of e.g. business and research teams. To facilitate the emergence of such improved communication, regional organizations such as HELCOM and EU could play important roles. Furthermore, it is shown that there is a perceived need among many stakeholders to step up the involvement of certain stakeholders, for example fuel companies, in collaboration on how to reduce pollution from shipping in cost-efficient ways. Finally, the results show that although continuous improvements of international regulation is a vital part of the governance of the marine sector, compliance will suffer if operators’ incentives are too strong in favor of not contributing to reduced pollution levels. Therefore, there is a strong need for innovative thinking on how to design such incentive schemes, not the least in relation to the continued implementation of Baltic Sea SECA and NECA as well as of the Baltic Sea Action Plan.

Cooperating for sustainable regional marine governance: The case of fisheries and nutrient runoff from agriculture to the Baltic Sea, Synthesis report2019Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Over-fishing and eutrophication (too much nutrients) are among the most severe threats to the ecosystems of the Baltic Sea and the ecosystem services they provide. Despite the well-known fact that effective and sustainable management requires cooperation – among as well as within states – appropriate frameworks that work have not yet been constructed and successfully applied. This report summarises findings from a research project on cooperation for sustainable marine governance of the Baltic Sea carried out between 2013 and 2018. Three aspects of central relevance for the understanding of regional cooperation in environmental governance are distinguished: interests, knowledge and management. It is shown that it is not enough to design cooperative arrangements that make the group of users, stakeholders or states better off than without such an arrangement. It is furthermore required that all actors have individual interests to participate, and that free-riding on others’ contributions can be controlled. When this is not the case, effective abatement of eutrophication is not likely to be forthcoming, even though aggregated benefits from such measures are larger than expected costs.

Knowledge often play important roles in marine environmental governance, not least in relation to so-called epistemic communities, that is, groups of experts that share a common understanding of the environmental problem at hand, and how to address it. It is shown that the coherence of the epistemic group can be a crucial factor influencing its impact. In both abatement of eutrophication and management of fish stocks, these expert groups have been somewhat divided, which has limited their impact.

Modes of management can influence cooperation and outcomes in ways that can be difficult to predict. Although environmental taxes and subsidies are powerful policy instruments in contemporary governance, they must be carefully crafted to fit into exiting norms and contexts to be effective. It is shown that monetary incentives targeting farmers’ use of fertilisers tend not to be effective when they are at odds with deeply held norms on what constitute a “good farmer”.

Collateral Damage: En studie om representationen av drönarattacker i amerikanska nyhetsinslag2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Volunteering for the nation: Volunteering as a tool of nation branding during the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Ukraine2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

There have been a lot of studies dedicated to investigating nation branding as a set of political discourses and practices deploying analysis of objects of symbolic nature: logotypes, brand books, slogans and commercials. The present thesis aims to study nation branding as a form of communicative labour through investigating volunteering as a form of media work that is used as a tool of the nation branding campaign in Ukraine during the Eurovision Song Contest in 2017. By using the theoretical concepts of nation branding, values and motivations of free labour in media industries, the thesis analyses the role of volunteers in the nation branding campaign during ESC 2017, volunteering as a specific form of media work and the motivation tools employed by the organisers and volunteers themselves to make sense of their involvement in the event. The analysis suggests that the roles assigned to volunteers as bearers of the nation brand are of great importance but the volunteers’ understanding of this process is rather confused and blurred. Another point highlighted in the thesis is how is volunteering was organised in terms of training and motivation on the side of organisers and what kind of motivations were of the crucial significance to volunteers themselves.

Ideologies of the Self: Constructing the Modern Ukrainian Subject in the Other's Modernity2016Inngår i: Kyiv-Mohyla Humanities Journal, ISSN 2313-4895, Vol. 3, s. 89-103Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Postcolonial theory has recently come under critique as an interpretative scheme applied to Eastern Europe and particularly Ukraine. However, a closer look suggests that the critique applies only to some aspects of the approach, such as a focus on power relations and representations, while the key question should be rephrased as whether the Ukrainian subject was constituted as a colonial subject. A range of empirical material from 1920s Ukrainian discourses, both Soviet and émigré, is analyzed to shed light on how Ukrainians constructed their subjectivity as “a site of disorder” (Dipesh Chakrabarty), splitting themselves into uncultured peasant masses to be modernized and erased as a voiceless subaltern subject, on the one hand, and modernizing elites, on the other. This split can be understood as an epitome of the colonial condition.

In pursuit of Kairos: Ukrainian journalists between agency and structure during Euromaidan2019Inngår i: Baltic Worlds, ISSN 2000-2955, E-ISSN 2001-7308, Vol. XII, nr 1, s. 4-19Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, I examine the role of journalists during Euromaidan in November 2013–February 2014. The conceptualization of a specific case of power, the media power (found in works by Bolin, Couldry, Curran, Hjarvard, Mancini, Zelizer, and others) basically oscillates between two extremes – that of regarding the media as heteronomous of the political field and that of arguing that the media increasingly influence other fields through processes of mediatization. What is the role of journalists in power relations? Under which conditions is the power of journalists – and their agency – likely to grow? This article presents the results of a series of interviews with Ukrainian journalists who covered the events of Euromaidan in different capacities. Validated with other evidence, their narratives suggest a positive power dynamic for the Ukrainian journalists during the protest events.

Mediated Europes: Discourse and Power in Ukraine, Russia and Poland During Euromaidan2017Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on mediated representations of Europe during Euromaidan and the subsequent Ukraine–Russia crisis, analysing empirical material from Ukraine, Poland and Russia. The material includes articles from nine newspapers, diverse in terms of political and journalistic orientation, as well as interviews with journalists, foreign policymakers and experts, drawing also on relevant policy documents as well as online and historical sources.

The material is examined from the following vantage points: Michel Foucault’s discursive theory of power, postcolonial theory, Jürgen Habermas’s theory of the public sphere, Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory, Jacques Derrida’s hauntology and Ernesto Laclau’s concept of the empty signifier. The methods of analysis include conceptual history (Reinhart Koselleck), critical linguistics and qualitative discourse analysis (a discourse-historical approach inspired by the Vienna school) and quantitative content analysis (in Klaus Krippendorff’s interpretation).

The national narratives of Europe in Ukraine, Russia and Poland are characterised by a dependence on the West. Historically, these narratives vacillated between idealising admiration, materialist pragmatics and geopolitical demonising. They have been present in each country to some extent, intertwined with their own identification.

These discourses of Europe were rekindled and developed on during Euromaidan (2013–2014). Nine major Ukrainian, Russian and Polish newspapers with diverse orientations struggled to define Europe as a continent, as the EU or as a set of values. Political orientation defined attitude; liberal publications in all three countries focused on the positives whereas conservative and business newspapers were more critical of Europe. There were, however, divergent national patterns. Coverage in Ukraine was positive mostly, in Russia more negative and the Polish perception significantly polarised.

During and after Euromaidan, Ukrainian journalists used their powerful Europe-as-values concept to actively intervene in the political field and promote it in official foreign policy. This was enabled by abandoning journalistic neutrality. By comparison, Russian and Polish journalists were more dependent on the foreign policy narratives dispensed by political elites and more constrained in their social practice.

Righting the writing. The power dynamic of Soviet Ukraine language policies and reforms in the 1920s-1930s2017Inngår i: Studi Slavistici, ISSN 1824-761X, E-ISSN 1824-7601, Vol. 14, s. 67-89Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Righting the Writing. The Power Dynamic of Soviet Ukraine Language Policies and Reforms in the 1920s-1930s The first post-revolutionary decades became decisive for the development of the Ukrainian language, national culture and identity. The Ukrainian language, previously subject to a number of bans, finally entered the stage of intensive status and corpus planning. Thanks to this, it became a decisive factor in the rivalry between different forms of statehood vying on the Ukrainian territory after 1917. At the same time, the status upgrade and broader public use called for the standardisation of the language. The first practical steps towards the unification of different orthographic traditions were undertaken from 1918 to 1921. The turbulence of civil war, however, determined the failure of comprehensive language reform. Calls for linguistic unification gained new force in the second half of the 1920s: with the introduction of Ukrainizacija, the local variant of the all-Union nationalities policy of korenizacija introduced in 1923, the Ukrainian language was acknowledged as the means to the republic’s Sovietisation. This was part and parcel of the Soviet "affirmative action empire" (Terry Martin) which had to contain the 1917-1921 rise of nationalism of the empire’s minorities. Locally, the elites had to negotiate their own interests and the centre’s demands. How exactly do the debates on the "correct" codification of the language and the actual steps towards different ideals reflect the changing power dynamic between the centre and the republics in the interbellum ussr This is the problem this study sets out to tackle using the example of Soviet Ukraine. The paper explores the link between language and politics in Soviet Ukraine in the 1920s and 1930s. While examining the political preconditions for the language policies in Ukraine, significant attention will also be devoted to the specifics of the 1928 spelling reform and its reception by the general public in Ukraine and abroad. In general, it is argued that in the Soviet Union language was often used as a tool of political consolidation, and the power struggle between different visions of the future of the republics can be seen in debates and reforms of language. Hence, the correlation between Soviet language policies and the subsequent Sovietisation (or Russification) is highlighted. The subsequent debates around the status of the Ukrainian language, its orthography and vocabulary exposed the unbridgeable differences between the political elites in the republic and powers in Moscow. The draft of the new orthography was thoroughly discussed by academics and linguists, representing different parts of Ukraine and the final draft was publicly discussed republic-wide. The spelling reform, adopted in 1929, can rightly be regarded as one of the greatest achievements of Ukrainizacija. This newly-acquired status was significantly challenged by the centralisation drive of the Moscow party leadership. This orthography, widely known as ’skrypnykivka’ (after the then Commissar for Education Mykola Skrypnyk) or ’Charkiv orthography’ was attacked for its attempts to dissociate the Ukrainian language from Russian and ’westernise’ the language. After 1933, the main principles of the spelling reform were labelled ’nationalistic’. The reform was quickly abandoned. Furthermore, after 1937, all the corpus planning attempts were geared towards ’purifying’ the Ukrainian language from foreign influence, when Russian equivalents and cognates were introduced or prioritised. © 2017 Author(s).

    Abstract [en]

The article focuses on the increasing adoption of media logic and the corresponding change of habitus in the field of academic history in Eastern Europe, with a particular focus on Ukraine. Departing from both mediatisation theory and memory studies, authors consider a range of relevant phenomena from across the region, before considering in more depth the case of LikBez, a grassroot initiative of Ukrainian historians, aimed at debunking historical myths spread both inside and outside Ukraine. The amalgamation of historical knowledge and multiple media platforms to convey it, it is argued, ushers in the era of mediatisation of history.

The Smart Home: Logistical media, infrastructure and practiced places2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This master thesis in media and communication studies explores the concept of the smart home, which by various industries within communication, information and energy business alongside property developers is expected to be the model for future living, housing and infrastructure development. Departing from a theoretical framework highlighting media and infrastructure as temporal and spatial phenomena, the analysis shows how the smart home arranges and manages both means of time and space due to its saturation of information technologies in the form of sensors, applications and data visualizations. The result of the study suggests that the smart home could be understood as a logistical medium, although the temporal bias present in the expectations on future living suggests that the purpose of the smart home is to sustain a flow of logistics and capital both over space and over time; the latter in terms of sustainability.

Arbetarklassens symboliska utplåning i medelklassens medier2018Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Naturalizing Social Class as a Moral Category on Swedish Mainstream Television2018Inngår i: Nordicom Review, ISSN 1403-1108, E-ISSN 2001-5119, Vol. 39, nr 1, s. 81-94Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents an analysis of how social class is constructed as a moral category on Swedish mainstream television. Practices of categorisation by the media is an important area of study since these practices are part of a process of co-construction of social categories that are offered to media users as cognitive tools and frames for navigating the social landscape. Based on a content analysis of television in Sweden, we show that the medium of television categorises people appearing on television along the social divisions of class and constructs class as a moral category, with a lower moral value assigned to the working class in comparison to the middle and upper class

Voice, silence and social class on television2018Inngår i: European Journal of Communication, ISSN 0267-3231, E-ISSN 1460-3705, Vol. 33, nr 5, s. 522-539Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The question of voice is a central and timeless political issue. Who gets to speak? Who is silenced? Who is listening? One of the main arenas for voice in modern, advanced democracies is the media. Media infrastructures, technologies, institutions and organizations are a precondition for political voice in large-scale societies, but are also an important factor in distributing the possibilities for voice among different groups and sectors of the population. In this article, we take on the question of voice in relation to social class and aim to analyse how the medium of television gives voice to people from different social classes. This study operationalizes the theoretical notion of voice by asking the following questions: who has the opportunity to appear and speak on television, to whom do they speak and under what circumstances does this communication occur? Based on a content analysis of television in Sweden, the results from this study show that voice is distributed in a highly unequal manner. It also shows that the relations enacted by television appearances conform to the social hierarchy. Whereas people from the ruling class frequently speak to people from the working and middle classes, they are rarely spoken to by members of a class that is positioned below their own. Television thus constructs a social hierarchy of voice and authority that reproduces and legitimizes already existing social hierarchies.

    Abstract [en]

Media usage has always included aspects of commodification. The media audience has been targeted as a recipient of advertising when watching (commercial) TV or reading newspapers. The advent of the Internet has further developed this commodification of the media audience. In many ways, everyday space is becoming more commercial in its organisation, citizens are being transformed into consumers and, in the long run, free speech conducted online is not free as it will be tracked, saved and used for commercial purposes. This chapter draws on a Swedish national representative survey asking re- spondents about their views on different aspects of commodification of their life online. The results indicate a rather sceptical view towards different forms of commodification related to Internet use among Swedish citizens. However, younger respondents, those with liberal market values and frequent Internet users embrace a more permissive view of a more commodified media environment. Two avenues are suggested for resisting such developments, targeting media producers and users.

    Abstract [en]

This article examines how media consumers of different age, gender and socio-economic backgrounds in Stockholm relate to and talk about celebrities and celebrity media. Based on 16 small focus groups with 17 year olds and 45–55 year olds, with male and female participants from working-class as well as academic backgrounds, I investigate a range of responses to celebrity content in connection with overall media developments in Sweden, in order to gain insights into what the contemporary cultural emphasis on celebrity can mean on an audience level within a particular context. Some of the pleasures gained from celebrity content but also elements of celebrity ‘hatred’ and experiences of media manipulation are explored. Likewise, some of the articulations of individual celebrities and celebrity media are discussed as interlinked with socially determined identity positions such as age, gender and social class.

Music Use in the Digital Media Age: Early Insights From a Study of Music Cultures Among Young People in Moscow and Stockholm2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents an ongoing research project investigating how the Internet is impacting on music use in contemporary society. The backdrop to the project is the digitalization of society and culture, where the music industry has undergone profound changes, and where the Internet, for young people in particular, is changing listening modes and, potentially, meanings of, music in everyday life. Our objective is to shed light on what these transformations mean on the user level, and how their adaptation is situated specific geo-cultural settings, through a qualitative study of how young music users in Moscow and Stockholm experience and discuss music in relation to the Internet. Drawing on preliminary research findings, we aim to discuss and develop questions around how the Internet integrates with daily experience within contemporary society; what this means for music as a form of communication; and how adaptations of Internet technologies are shaped by geo-cultural frameworks.

Tabloid journalism and tabloidization2020Inngår i: Oxford Research Encyclopaedia of Communication, nr February 28, s. 1-23Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Tabloid journalism has long been a highly contested news form. With a sensationalist approach and an easily digested mix of entertainment and news, it has often attracted mass audiences at the same time as it has stirred controversy and raised concern about its impact on public discourse. Originating in the tabloid newspaper, associated both with a small newspaper format and a particular news style, the term “tabloid” is today considered to characterize a range of other media content, extending to popular TV programsand certain kinds of online news. The rise and development of tabloid journalism, in combination with wider processes shaping the media, has moreover led to a debate about“tabloidization,” involving ideas about shifting priorities in journalism and the media landscape as a whole.

Although tabloidization has no standard definition, an overview of empirical research using the concept as a starting point highlights analyses of various media, historical periods, and media markets, adding to understandings of tabloidization as multi-faceted and context-bound. Such a process, furthermore, has been viewed both as a possible threat to the public sphere and as potentially entailing democratizing elements, relating to long-standing depictions of tabloid journalism as either “dumbing down” or “reaching out.” Yet contemporary analysis in this field has tended to paint a more complex picture of both phenomena as well as pointing to emerging questions around the category of tabloid journalism in digital settings.

Articulations of Gender and Nation in Music Use in Stockholm and Moscow2013Inngår i: [Conference] Music, Gender & Difference: Intersectional and postcolonial perspectives on musical fields, Vienna, October 10-12, 2013: Books of abstracts, Wien, 2013, s. 85-Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Previous research has shown that uses of media technologies (Gray 1992, Lally 2002) as well as music consumption (DeNora 2000) are gendered practices, while scholars have also emphasized how national context and ideas about nation, ethnicity and race play into the uses of media technologies (Miller & Slater 2000) and music cultures (Roy 2010).  Drawing on such analyses, this paper investigates contemporary practices in music use from an intersectional feminist perspective. It takes as its starting point the Internet as a core music platform, which is transforming listening modes and potentially also meanings of music.

Posing questions about how to understand emerging trends in music use in relation to music as a gendered and place-bound practice, the paper presents one part of a larger study of music use online among young adults in Stockholm and Moscow. The study is ongoing and is conducted by the presenters and their colleagues. Analyzing focus group interviews with young adult men and women, the paper explores how – primarily – gender and nation is articulated (Hall 1996) in the talk about music and online media technologies. Through discussions about their favorite music as well as their favorite media to use when listening to music, and how music is intricately intertwined in their social networks, the participants display ideas about themselves in a context of gender, place, ethnicity and race. We argue that the way they listen to music and use media technology such as Spotify and Last FM can be understood as interplaying with the process of articulation of gender and nation, and that this articulation may differ between different places.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Cooperation and communication play an important role for environmental governance. This holds true for the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe, one of the most disturbed ecosystems in the world, where insufficient cooperation between different stakeholders is one reason for goal failure. This article addresses the linkages between (media) framing on the one hand, and cooperation on the other. The case in focus is a set of negotiations related to the Baltic Sea Action Plan, the most central governance strategy in the Baltic Sea region. Our results show that in order to influence political decision-making, key stakeholders compete over the power to define and interpret problems, causes and solutions to an extent impeding cooperation. We focus the analysis on eutrophication, which we show to be a complex and controversial topic, framed in incompatible ways by different stakeholders.

Risk Communication and the Role of the Public: Towards Inclusive Environmental Governance of the Baltic Sea?2016Inngår i: Environmental Governance of the Baltic Sea / [ed] Michael Gilek Mikael Karlsson Sebastian Linke Katarzyna Smolarz, Springer, 2016, 1, s. 205-227Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter focuses on forms of and challenges for risk communication within regional environmental governance, based on an analysis of five environmental risks in the Baltic Sea – marine oil transportation, chemicals, overfishing, eutrophication and alien species. We address questions about how risks are framed and communicated and also analyse the role of communication in the governance process. Our main focus is on risk communication with the public (e.g. existing institutional arrangements and procedures of risk communication), but we also relate this analysis to discussions on communication with a broad range of actors and issues of stakeholder participation and communication. In the study we have identified some examples of relatively well-working risk communication with parts of the organised public in the Baltic Sea region (BSR), such as in fisheries or eutrophication, but also a number of different barriers and obstacles. Our key result from this study is that BSR consists of many national institutions for risk communication, but that there are hardly any centralised institutions for risk communication activities relating to environmental governance in the region. Another key conclusion is that public risk communication in this array of cross-national environmental risks is restricted mainly to (one-way) information. Against this backdrop and from our empirical and theoretical knowledge of risk communication and the role of the public, we finally suggest some ways for improvement.

    Becoming patriots in Russia: biopolitics, fashion, and nostalgia2017Inngår i: Nationalities Papers, ISSN 0090-5992, E-ISSN 1465-3923, Vol. 45, nr 1, s. 8-24Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The article seeks to explore the common ground between biopolitics, fashion, patriotism and nostalgia. Taking off from the Foucauldian notion of biopolitics as a control apparatus exerted over a population, I provide an insight into the modern construction of the Russian nation, where personal and collective sacrifice, traditional femininity and masculinity, orthodox religion, and the Great Patriotic War become the basis for patriotism. On carefully chosen case studies, I will show how the state directly and indirectly regulates people’s lives by producing narratives, which are translated (in some cases designers act as mouthpieces for the state demographic or military politics) into fashionable discourses and, with a core of time, create specific gender norms–women are seen as fertile mothers giving birth to new soldiers, while men are shown as fighters and defenders of their nation. In the constructed discourses, conservative ideals become a ground for the creation of an idea of a nation as one biological body, where brothers and sisters are united together. In these fashionable narratives, people’s bodies become a battlefield of domestic politics. Fashion produces a narrative of a healthy nation to ensure the healthy work- and military force.

    Abstract [en]

The proliferation and recycling of Soviet popular culture and history is a central ingredient of post-Soviet film and television production, leading to accusations that the Russian media is nurturing nostalgia. Nostalgia can hardly account for the manifold uses of the Soviet past in contemporary Russian television programming. Nevertheless, in the aftermath of the Crimean annexation, it became evident that nostalgia for a strong empire with a strong ruling hand' was part of Putin's symbolic politics for several years. Keeping these considerations in mind, this article investigates how nostalgia extends into the domain of television and becomes an element of symbolic politics, employing a case study of two documentaries produced during Putin's presidency to focus the analysis. This study also examines how contemporary Russian television uses footage and film clips from the socialist period and witness testimonies to dismantle' popular myths.

Mediated Post-Soviet Nostalgia2014Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Post-Soviet nostalgia, generally understood as a sentimental longing forthe Soviet past, has penetrated deep into many branches of Russian popular culture in the post-1989 period. The present study investigates how the Soviet past has been mediated in the period between 1991 and 2012 as one element of a prominent structure of feeling in present-day Russian culture.

The Soviet past is represented through different mediating arenas – cultural domains and communicative platforms in which meanings are created and circulated. The mediating arenas examined in this study include television, the Internet, fashion, restaurants, museums and theatre. The study of these arenas has identified common ingredients which are elements of a structure of feeling of the period in question. At the same time, the research shows that the representations of the past vary with the nature of the medium and the genre.

The analysis of mediations of the Soviet past in Russian contemporary culture reveals that there has been a change in the representations of the Soviet past during the past twenty years, which roughly correspond to the two decades marked by the presidencies of Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s and of Vladimir Putin in the 2000s (including Dmitrii Medvedev's term, 2008–2012). The critical and reflective component that was present in representations of the Soviet past in the 1990s has slowly faded away, making room first for more commercial and then for political exploitations of the past. Building on Svetlana Boym's conceptual framework of reflective and restorative nostalgia, the present study provides an illustration of how reflective nostalgia is being gradually supplanted by restorative nostalgia.

Academic research has provided many definitions of nostalgia, from strictly medical explanations to more psychological and socio-cultural perspectives. The present study offers examples of how nostalgia functions as a label in ascribing political and cultural identities to oneself and to others, creating confusion about the term and about what and who can rightly be called nostalgic.

    Abstract [en]

This article investigates the Nostal'giia channel, a channel reproducing the daily schedule of Soviet Tsentralnoe Televidenie (Central Television) of the 1970s-1980s. The broadcast day comprises a flow of program reruns and a number of newly produced talk shows and documentaries. Reruns provide content flow that creates a particular experience of time passing while viewers can relive the experience of watching television in the 1980s. Meanwhile, new productions serve as commentaries on this content and connect bits and pieces into a complete picture by interpreting and providing contextual information. By doing so, the producers of the channel aim to create the feeling of historical continuity. By applying autoethnography, I investigate the experience of watching the channel and the flow of nostalgic sentiments that emerge while experiencing mediated narrations of the past. The aim is to not only explore the channel content, but also come to terms with nostalgia as a subjective experience and the difficulties that appear in the process of researching it.

In order to describe the conditions of memory negotiation, we suggest using the notion of ‘hyperconnected memories’, which refers to the mediatization of memory in a nexus of contingent forms of communication. By conducting a critical discourse analysis (CDA), we show how the Soviet past is negotiated in contemporary Russia and analyse how national identity is discursively constructed alongside official narratives and individual memories. We argue that an important element in this process is nostalgia, which motivates people to join mnemonic online communities but also functions as an intermediary between cultural memory and national identity by making history a personal, sentimental matter. However, we will also demonstrate that the negotiation of official history and individual memory in mnemonic online communities does not automatically lead to emancipation from state-propagated narratives.

    Abstract [en]

The article seeks to explore the common ground between bio-politics, gender, patriotism and war nostalgia. Taking off from the Foucaldian notion of biopolitics as a control apparatus exerted over a population, we provide an insight into the modern construction of Russian nation, where personal and collective sacrifice, traditional femininity and masculinity, orthodox religion andwar become the basis for patriotism. On carefully chosen case studies we will show how the state directly and indirectly regulates peoples lives by producing narratives, which are translated into media discourses and with a core of time create specific “gender norms” – women are seen as fertile mothers giving birth to new soldiers, while men are shown as fighters and defenders of their nation. In the constructed discourses nostalgia for a war plays one of the central roles and becomes a ground of a creation of an idea of a nation as one biological body, where brothers and sisters are united together. In these popular culture narratives people’s bodies become a battlefield of domestic politics. Popular culture hence produces a narrative of a healthy nation to ensure the healthy work- and military force. The authors tackle the above-mentioned aims by conducting visual analysis of several films, where the main characters are women in contrast to the majority of films about war. (Batallion (2015), A zori zdes’ tikhie (2015)).
