"The air smelt queer": En queerteoretisk närläsning av Sarah Waters Fingersmith2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Fingersmith is a historical novel with a clear, non-heteronormative agenda. It was published in 2002 by Sarah Waters, and it challenges the way the Victorian era viewed and oppressed non-heteronormative sexuality. The characters Susan Trinder and Maud Lilly, is exposed to both imprisonment, violence and abuse as a kind of collective punishment of “the mad woman”.

The primary goal of this queer analysis is to see how ‘multisexual’ expressions can be traced in the novel, often conveyed through neo-Victorian symbols and the function of the colour ’red/crimson’. It also discusses how the neo-Victorian symbols (especially the important function of Maud’s white gloves) works as both a way of turning women mad and keeping them sane in a world determined to ’cure’ sexuality that differs from its heteronormative structure.

Det vetbara finns i hjärtat av det fördolda: En narratologisk udersökning av Ingeborg Bachmanns roman Malina2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I study the Austrian author Ingeborg Bachmann’s novel Malina (1971) from the perspective of Gérard Genette’s narrative theory and his notions of tense, mood and voice. In dialogue with earlier research on Malina I reflect over the last scene in the novel, what really happens there and how it matters for the rest of the novel. I give an account of feminist theories with focus on the annihilation of the female voice, the memory as theatre and the folklore tale as flight. The result is a more distinct perception of Bachmann’s skill, closeness and awareness as a writer and her use of Malina as contribution to the feminist debate and as a tool to find a place in the patriarchal world of intellectual, postwar Vienna.

Många röster små: En applicering av Michail Bachtins polyfonibegrepp på Moa Martinsons roman Kvinnor och äppelträd2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to investigate to which extent the novel Kvinnor och äppelträd by Moa Martinson can be classified as a polyphonic novel. The concept polyphony was established in literary theory by the Russian language theorist and literary critic Michail Bachtin in 1929, in his book Problems of Dostoevsky’s poetics. In order to understand and comprehend the concept of polyphony I have used an interpretation due to the literature scholar Robyn McCallum. She notes that the characters in a polyphonic novel function as focalizers. All fictional characters create their own basis of social, cultural and ideological opinions and values, from which they provide their particular perspective on the story. Therefore, when fictional characters and their socio-ideological viewpoints intersect, a rather complex structure of interaction, dialogues and intersubjectivity is created between them.  Kvinnor och äppelträd is according to the most prominent scholar in the field, Ebba Witt-Brattström, a polyphonic novel. Her presumption is based upon the plurality of voices that is expressed in the novel, and the ambiguous interaction between them. However, to the best of my knowledge, no profound investigation of the novel’s polyphonic structure has yet been undertaken, and therefore this essay is dedicated to this task. For this purpose I have performed an analysis of the narratology in the novel, resulting in the overall conclusion that Kvinnor och äppelträd is indeed a polyphonic novel. Since the concept of polyphony also implies a modernistic feature, one can discuss the fact that Kvinnor och äppelträd has been classified as working class literature, and not modernistic literature. The final conclusion of the essay is that the complex polyphonic structure of the novel, and its controversial and pioneering content, have been underestimated and ignored. Regarding this aspect Moa Martinson should have been categorized under the Swedish literary modernism.

Om femme fatalen i Lulu. En monstertragedi: En läsning med Butler, Riviere och Lacan2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay examine the femme fatal and the head character in the play Lulu Eine Monstretra gödie by Frank Wedekind. I have studied Lulu, who would be classified as a femme fatal, in terms to see what kind of woman’s portrait a femme fatal is. I will show with the theories of Judith Butler, Jacques Lacan and Joan Riviere how the femme fatal can be seen as a construc-tion, a role done by men. As well as a strong self owned woman. I will also discuss other con-cepts like femme-inism. My aim with this analysis is not to show one, but many different ways of looking at the femme fatal.

Tal, text, handling. En undersökning av viljor och hur dessa uttrycks i handling i Tjechovs Tre systrar2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In this essay I have examined text, speech and action in Chekhov's Three sisters, as well as how the characters express their wills in action and in speech. I have used different methods such as action analysis, the five W questions and BSI (background, situation and intention). These methods are similar to those actors use to uncover situatedness of characters and to find motivated and intentional patterns behind their actions.

I have used these techniques to identify the plot, explore what happened before the plot begins and to read the text in terms of action. The aim was also to find the counter points where wills expressed in action are contradicted by wills expressed in speech. Using these methods I found that the characters in Three sisters manage their lives dreaming about the future or recalling the past, except the character Natasha. Her goal is obvious, she runs her will with clear intentions and she uses functional means to achieve her goal. The main conclusion is that the characters’ wills expressed in speech, are contradicted by will expressed in action. This creates a discrepancy. The characters are controlled by their unspoken desires which drive them further away from their expressed goals. It seems to be paradoxical, but it makes perfect sense since it drives the plot forward, deepens the image of the characters and the relationships between them. It also becomes clear when actions are interpreted from wills and motivations, stated or unstated, and I argue that action is not only the doing but also the intention to do; this makes sense when events in a dramatic text are analyzed as relational and conditional.

Vad de säger när de säger sina namn: En läsning av det subversiva anspråket utgående ifrån produktionen av författarnamnet Lidija Praizović2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the way that subversivity is produced in relation to the name of the author, as understood by Foucault, and what potential for ressistance that can be glimpsed there. This from the reading of three text that in different ways relate to that theme.

Firstly, throught the reading of "Isis mamma är genusvetare, skribent och konstnär, min mamma är f.d. städerska, kokerska och dagisfröken, numera förtidspensionär med diagnosen fibromyalgi" by Lidija Praizović, a text that actively work with the internal production of different exteriorities. The text uses these exteriorities, both to commit the violation needed in order to establish it's perspective toward a capitalist publicity, and to anticipate the response and argument towards the text in the same publicity. The becoming of the proletarian class awereness is in the text partly formed in terms of origin and political ressentiment. But when used in litterature the analysis show that they produce subversive collective assemblies and question the border of political discourse. The way we become subjects in submission in terms of being bodies, irrational, specific in relation to a liberal sphere that produces the superior as invisible and bodyless, can establish it's pespective as human and universal when turned into literature. Throughout this processes the proletarian position is produced as an instance of power both internal to the text and pointing outwards, from the text. The analysis futher shows how conventions that regulate the spreading of discourse through the name of the author in capitalism, can be used to circulate experiences of submission that has the formation of collective assemblies as their potential. A process that is directly related to the post-‐fordist capitalisms needs for new forms of life in order to reproduce.

The two other texts, "Nej, man har inte rätt att skriva vad man vill" by Lyra Ekström Lindbäck, and "I huvudet på Lidija Praizović" by Tove Folkesson, was produceed as a reaction to the first texts apperance in the public sphere. The first one is critical to the text and the name, but is still making claims on a subversive position. The reading of it shows that the making of that claim, in relation to the need to produce ones own name as an author name in community with the liberal public sphere, results in a blocking of the subversive potential and a reduction of the subversive to only a marker on the name. A reaction that is in turn foreseen by the first text in it's working with the anticipation of readers responce. The reading of the second text shows how, throught the production of a complete affinity with the exteriority that is the athor name of Lidija Praizović, the potentially dangerous class position is reduced and disarmed. That occurs partly throught a reduction of the class position to aspects that only allows political ressentiment and loneliness. This turns the subversivity and the violation associated with the name of Lidija Praizović to functions for the name of Tove Folkesson. Something that in turn shows not only the potential of using these aspects of political becomings as grounds for building something that goes beyond them, but also the dangers of it. Both texts can therefore be seen as two different attempts to block the spreading of the subversive by using it solely to produce the name of the author.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to investigate the role of literature in the Ugandan society. It uses Bourdieus field theory and the book The Rules of Art to analyze a handful of interviewes with people on different positions on the literary field in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. The interviews were collected by the author of this thesis in the beginning of 2015. The thesis examines the overall conditions on the literature market, the hierarchies and the character of the literature. In addition to field theory, it uses post-colonial theory, and Ngûgî Wa Thiong'os' Decolonising the mind to investigate the languages and styles of the literature.

To investigate the literature outside of the educated circles and intellectual spheres, the concept of the literature as merely printed and publicated needs to be questioned, since there is also an existing body of oral literature in the country. Amongst the actors on the literature field there is an ambition for the literature to be a progressive force in the society. However the study shows that hierarchies on the literature field pushes the written and publicated literature further away from the general person. This also due to the limitations of the written literature, since the possibilities to access the literature is highly dependant on the income, literacy and educational level of the receiver.

    Abstract [en]

The release of Maja Lundgrens Myggor och tigrar in 2007 caused a large debate that mostly focused on whether the book should be seen as a true reproduction of reality or a work of fiction and if the author had made the right choice in writing about friends, family and famous Swedish persons in her book. About one year later Lars Norén published En dramatikers dagbok in which he also shares details about other people´s lives and, by placing the book in the genre of a diary, claims that it represents reality. The critics were easier on him, and more positive over all in their judgment of En dramatikers dagbok, and many were upset about how different the two authors and their books were received. Tofind out why controversial works are apprehended as controversial I have chosen to analyze Maja Lundgrens Myggor och Tigrar and Lars Noréns En dramatikers dagbok, independent of, as well as compared to, each other. While leaning on reception theory andtheories about different ways of reading as well as the autobiography as a genre I have asked myself the following questions:

    • Which factors have led critics as well as the public opinion to speak about Maja Lundgrens Myggor och tigrar and Lars Noréns En dramatikers dagbok as controversial?
    • What do the two books have in common and what separates them?
    • How does the debate differ regarding the two books and what is the cause for that difference in reception?

My essay shows that when reading an autobiography or a diary most people cannot separate the book from the author and the life that the book is a reflection of. When analyzing Myggor och Tigrar and En Dramatikers dagbok I have seen that prejudices and experience within the reader, who the author is, and other issues surrounding the text, plays an important part when it comes to these genres.

Alice Walker and the Grotesque in The Third Life of Grange Copeland2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the uses of the grotesque in Alice Walker’s novel The Third Life of Grange Copeland. Published in 1970 the novel has been subject to various readings by diverse scholars. However, previous research has failed to take into account the displays of the grotesque in the novel. This essay argues that not only does Walker use the grotesque prominently throughout the novel, but also that Walker constructs an intricate critique of U.S. society through her depictions of the grotesque. Resting largely on the theoretical perspective of Mikhail Bakhtin this essay examines the following grotesque images: the female spectacle, the female adolescent, the hysteric, pregnant death, monstrosity, and whiteness. By exposing Walker’s uses of the grotesque, this essay offers an analysis that exposes the relationship between Walker’s grotesque images and her womanist objective. The aim of The Third Life of Grange Copeland is to critique the oppressive regimes of patriarchy and U.S. white supremacist culture and society. It is argued here, then, that the grotesque is strategically used in different manners when addressing womanist and racial issues. Walker uses the grotesque in order to alter confining gender binaries and expose and criticize the destructive aspects of patriarchal and white supremacist ideologies. Through her narrative and the diverse characters of The Third Life, Walker exposes the repercussions of oppressive white supremacist and patriarchal orders.

    Abstract [en]

With a hermeneutical method using narratology this thesis is interpreting the auteure Lars von Trier´s discussed movie Antichrist. On one hand within the limits of the hermeneutic Paul Riceours analysis of structure is used to reconstruct the narrative of the film out of the different part of discourses that I have construed in my first reading to find out a deeper comprehension of the relation between the characters and their relations to the different discourses. On the other hand the discourses which extracts out of His and Hers actions and statements are related to the clues that I´ve found out from interviews with von Trier regarding Antichrist where he, among other things, touches upon philosophical work of Friedrich Nietzsche and his own disregard about protestantism and religion. All in all this first phase of interpretation is termed the different horizons which I finally interprete and coalesce with my subjects comprehension on a metadiegetic and meta-metadiegetic level. By this a ”fusion of horizons” in the sense of Hans-Georg Gadamer can take place, which directly leads into the big scene of Relevations. But ”Chaos reigns” in von Triers Antichrist as well as Nietzsches philosophy.

”It was easy to write about whores, but to write about a good woman was much more difficult”: En queer läsning av Charles Bukowskis Women och Love is a Dog from hell2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

A Queer Reading of Charles Bukowskiʼs Women and Love is a dog from hell

This thesis aims to examine how the representation of gender is portrayed in relation to sex and power in Charles Bukowski’s novel Women and poetry collection Love is a dog from hell.

The theoretical frame of the analysis is based on Judith Butlerʼs queer theory regarding the heterosexual matrix and gender performativity. The analysis consists of a textual comparison where a specific selection of poems is analysed parallel to the novel to see how they interact and how they oppose each other, through a queer reading.

The analysis is divided in three parts where the first one discusses the construction of masculinity in Charles Bukowskiʼs protagonist Henry Chinaski and how this is presented differently in the two literary genres. The second part reveals how sex is presented in relation to power and how active and passive women are considered as sexually acceptable. The final part of the analysis discusses how women are portrayed in the novel and in the poetry. Further it demonstrates the consequences for women who do not act as expected in relation to their gender roles.

In addition to this, the thesis investigates how the poetry functions as a tool to apply depth to the characters in the novel. It also points out how the sexual relationships work as a way of maintaining the masculine superiority over women. The repetitive way in which the protagonist fails to fulfil his sexual performance points towards an image of Chinaski as queer, something that previous scholarship has failed to notice.

In conclusion, this essay shows how a queer reading can work as an instrument to read a text that is generally interpreted as heteronormative, macho and misogynistic. The queer reading in the thesis demonstrates a different interpretation of predetermined gender roles in two of Bukowski’s literary works.

Ladies av Mara Lee– en chick-lit som alla andra?: En narratologisk och diskursanalytisk studie av Ladies och chick-lit-genren.2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

My thesis deals with the novel Ladies, written in 2007 by the Swedish author Mara Lee. When published, it was received as a book belonging to the chick lit genre but still got good reviews. This combination is really unusual and awoke my interest in the novel. My thesis is therefore an analysis whether Ladies can be considered a chick lit novel or not, and in what way it is similar to or differs from the genre.

I start my thesis with an overview of former research of chick lit and what earlier was called trivial literature. Here Lisbeth Larsson’s En annan historia, [Another Story], Janice Radway’s Reading the Romance and Suzanne Ferriss’ and Mallory Young’s anthology Chick Lit The New Woman’s Fiction were necessary to understand the background of the genre.

After the research overview I continue with a narratological analysis, using the concepts of Maria Nikolajeva’s Barnbokens byggklossar [The Bricks of the Children Book] to look at the structure of a chick lit story. After finishing my chick lit genre analysis I try to complete my own definition of the genre.

I find the themes love, sexuality and body focus in Ladies especially interesting and therefore choose to look closer into how these areas are represented in the book. By using Judith Butler’s concepts the heterosexual matrix, the represented gender and Tiina Rosenberg’s hetero normativity I analyse the representation of the themes.

In the final discussion I compare my different analyses and my conclusion shows that Ladies can’t be considered belonging to the chick lit genre. The biggest difference lies in how love and sexuality are represented in the book compared to chick lit novels. Whereas chick lit in many cases confirms gender stereotypes and conservative norms, Ladies actually, according to my analysis, questions them.

In the end I am finally doing a short reflection about the novel and the author using Pierre Bourdieus concepts about symbolic resources and ”habitus”.

    Abstract [en]

The essay is a text centred study of ten Young Adult Novels, in which Internet plays an essential part. The structure is put into light out of used narrative techniques of how to create stories and its construction elements. I compare the ten Young Adult novels to each other. My aim is to analyze the functions of the Internet motive in the chosen novels, using different approaches, and enlighten it with concerns to the new phenomenon that Internet is in society. Consequently the essay will also have a mimetic touch to it.

The ten novels that I base the analysis on are written of both med and women and have both male and female as main fictive persons, and are from different parts of the world. The novels are published between 1997 and 2002.

The analysis is divided into the categories that I have found characteristic for the Internet based Young Adult novel. My study shows that the authors of these Young Adult novels remind of each other in their ways of using Internet as a literary form. It also points out all the possibilities that Internet brings with it when it is being used as a tool in the making of a story, sometimes representing familiar literary motives in a more modern way.

    Abstract [en]

My aim in this essay is to analyze how the female body is represented in Swedish working class literature. I have compared four different novels all of which contain a female bathing scene: the opening chapter of Moa Martinsons Kvinnor och äppelträd (1933) , the opening chapter of Ivar Lo-Johanssons Bara en mor (1939) and a scene each in Glasfåglarna (1996) and Mosippan (1998), both written by Elsie Johansson. The bathing scenes suggest three key issues: modernisation, urbanisation and above all women´s sexual politics. Though there were several issues facing the feminist movement in Sweden in the 1930, the question of a woman’s right to her body was one that united the movement, regardless of class.

O/ändliga o/möjligheter i Kathy Ackers Great Expectations och Alison Knowles The Big Book2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I'm trying to trace, analyze and emphasize Kathy Acker’s Great Expectations and Alison Knowles’s The Big Book in regard to the books in/finite im/possibilities. I analyze them through historical changes in the books format and structure, especially ones proposed by Mallarmé, Duchamp and Fluxus. To analyze the texts more closely attention is directed to how Acker and Knowles challenge the conventional narrative, in regard to the body and language/voice and sound. I give specific emphasizes to thoughts posted by écriture féminine, while also adding Mara Lee’s temporalities in regard to body resistance and time. A final thing I do in this paper is through close reading look at contemporary material discourses. I try to examine especially two examples that open up for in/finite im/possibilities in Acker’s and Knowles’s use and references to holes and animals.

Woolf, Stein och H.D. genom Lawler som prisma: En diffraktiv läsning av tre texter och tre fotografier2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine how visual art and literature can emerge without enclosed boundaries and properties, and this effect the reading. I’m using the practice of diffraction, reading the images and texts through one another in attending to and responding to details and specificities of relations and differences and how they come to matter. The diffractive methodology I use is based on Donna Haraway’s useful counterpoint to reflection and mirroring. Reading diffractively attends to the relational nature of difference, and maps through agential cuts, where the effects of differences appear. However, I mainly draw my methodological approach on Karen Barads theoretical framework “agential realism”, where entanglements are added to diffraction.

Since I choose two different genres I’ve selected texts and images that I believe mutually react to notions of war and violence. Three images are used as prism in my reading of the three texts. I’m using female authors based in Europe between First and Second World War, and an American visual artist active during the War in Afghanistan (2001-2014) and the Iraq War (2003-2011).

The images are three photographs by Louise Lawler: WAR IS TERROR, 2001/2003, Still Life (Candle), 2003 and Grieving Mothers (Attachment), 2005 and the texts are Virginia Woolf’s Three Guineas (1938), Gertrude Stein’s ”Or More (Or Wars)” (1926) and H.D.’s Trilogy (1944-46). The three chapters are divided into three parts, where each part is a cut.

    Abstract [de]

This war will never be forgotten: A study of intertextual relations between Homer's Iliad and Wolfgang Petersen's Troy2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In 2004 Troy was released in movie theatres worldwide and almost immediately sparked up discussions on film’s relation to the ancient epic of Homer.

The main purpose of this paper is to see the connection between Troy and Homer’s The Iliad – motion pictures’ only officially credited source of inspiration. By using comparative method and intertextual approach I try to see how a literary piece, for centuries recited and cherished by the highest academic circles is remodelled to fit the taste of a mass public. How The Iliad mutates to be a marketable product.

I discuss the changes of the plot that were introduced in Troy and try to see those changes as an outcome of mutation process. Apart from the plot, the notion of a hero is also discussed: how the definition of hero changed through time? To illustrate the changes, two main heroes – Achilles and Hector are discussed, yet again using the comparative method.

By approaching Troy and The Iliad as two separate cultural products (I did not view Troy as a documentary on The Iliad) I was able to connect them. I could see that the essence of the literary work and the film appears to be the same. It shows that the ancient Greek values, especially those, related to warfare and heroism, have definitely survived long enough to penetrate the modern thought.

    Abstract [en]

Ivan Aksenov (1884–1935), critic, poet, and translator, was a brilliant representative of the genre-crossing and internationalist spirit of the Russian avant-garde. For different reasons, however, his life and works have until recently remained largely ignored outside a small circle of initiated readers (Farsetti 2015; Kleberg 2015). Aksenov belonged to the so-called right-wing futurists of the Centrifuge, a short-lived group that included the young Boris Pasternak. He was an ardent anti-Symbolist, a polyglot, and a master of all techniques, who insisted on the importance of rhythm and texture rather than ideas and harmonic structures. His early poetry was original and provocative, thematically as well as formally. The same is true for his controversial translation practices.

Vita riddare i höglandsrustning: En närläsning av Walter Scotts Waverley2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Waverley; or ’Tis Sixty Years Since is an historical novel written by the Scottish author Sir Walter Scott which follows the adventures of Edward Waverley through the Scottish Highlands during the 1745–1746 Jacobite rebellion. It is, as has been suggested by previous research, a novel with a clear imperialistic bias and this essay adds to that discourse by applying the modern concept of the white savior complex. The white savior complex argues that white characters, in certain works, act as and are described as intelligent and moral saviors of non-white characters, who in turn are portrayed as unintelligent and immoral. Only by the actions of the white savior can they be saved. The complex is present mainly in the novel’s protagonist who drags the seemingly backwards society of the Scottish Highlands into a modern future as part of Great Brittan. This essay argues that the move from a backwards and archaic society to a modern and prosperous one would have been possible even without using the framework the white savior.

Andrey Platonov: The Forgotten Dream of the Revolution2018Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This book traces the originality of Andrey Platonov’s vision of the Revolution in readings of his works. It has been common in Platonov scholarship to measure him within the parameters of a political pro et contra the October Revolution and Soviet society, but the proposal of this book is to look for the way in which the writer continuously asked into the disastrous aspects of the implementation of a new proletarian community for what they could tell us about the promise of the Revolution to open up the experience of the world as common. In readings of selected works by Andrei Platonov I follow the development of his chronicle of revolutionary society, and from within it the outline of the forgotten utopian dream of a common world. I bring Platonov into a dialogue with certain questions that arise from the philosophy of Martin Heidegger and that were later re-addressed in the works of Maurice Blanchot, Georges Bataille and Jean-Luc Nancy, related to the experience of the modern world in terms of communality, groundlessness, memory, interiority. I show that Platonov writes the Revolution as an implementation of common being in society that needs to retrieve the forgotten memory of what being in common means.

Kärlekens morgonrodnad: kärlek och begär i Agnes von Krusenstjernas Fröknarna von Pahlen2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the love and desire between Angela von Pahlen and Stanny Landborg in Agnes von Krusenstjerna’s Fröknarna von Pahlen series. I have studied the characters in Krusenstjerna’s texts using Judith Butler’s theory of the heterosexual matrix. My main focus has been the desire in Fröknarna von Pahlen. Drawn from the primary question, “What is love?”, I examine the desires possibilities and obstacles.

The essay is divided into two parts. In the first part I read Fröknarna von Pahlen against its contemporary view on homosexuality. I have found both an awareness of the contemporary view but also a tendency to surpass this view, go beyond it in order to create something new. In the second part of the essay I focus on the relationship between the two young girls, Angela and Stanny, and a few other characters close to them. The desire in Krusenstjernas texts reaches an almost universal level, it is written as the same irrespective of between what or who it is expressed. The characters are however also always subject to culture and society which is dominated by the heterosexual matrix. Its rules for sexuality are embodied in different ways, through actions or thoughts, and are constantly present.

The novels use both the hetero-normative model for love and the ones the heterosexual matrix rules out as unwanted. But through repeating these models differently the text becomes a subversive instrument in the deconstruction of the heterosexual matrix. By means of applying a lyrical tone to the text and by putting the “divergent” love in a secluded place Agnes von Krusenstjerna brings her text to something new and bends the rules for what desire and love are allowed to be.

Väninnor, älskarinnor och goda styvmödrar: Kvinnliga vänskapsrelationer i tre svenska romaner 1836-18572007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on romantic friendship between women in three Swedish novels written between 1836 and 1857: Sophie von Knorring’s (1797–1848) Illusionerna (1836), Fredrika Bremer’s (1801–1865) En dagbok (1843) and Marie Sophie Schwartz’ (1819–1894) En fåfäng mans hustru (1857). Also, the connection between women and passion as well as the interesting occurrence of step- and foster mothers is looked upon in the study.

The romantic friendship is freely expressed in these novels; love between women is neither presented as unnatural or unchaste. It both challenges the heterosexual matrix’ claim on intelligibility and its rules for how desire should be expressed. With the room of one’s own as a figure the romantic friendship upholds a special place in the text and can be presented both as an alternative to other relations and as an utopian reality to long for.

The relationships between women and men in the novels are on the other hand presented as problematic and therefore, again, in conflict with the heterosexual matrix’ claim on naturalness. Passion in this form is potentially dangerous and must be controlled. Instead of the traditional view on the sexes an alternative model consisting of rational women and emotional men takes place. Love based on reason and friendship makes important components in the efforts made to solve the heterosexual problem. The equality these women long for in their relationships with men is despite these solutions not possible to combine with an artistic career. When the heterosexual couples unite the women must solely devote their life to husband and children.

On the contrary of the image of the wicked stepmother these novels introduce the step- and foster mother as a heroine, capable of loving altruism. Relationships between women form strong networks in the text which defy the socially organized sexuality. Through these alliances and formations of alternative kinship systems the women initiate an escape from the patriarchal oppression and challenge the heterosexual norm which rules society.
