"Awful apprehension" och "sickening realization": Om begreppen "terror" och "horror" i den gotiska litteraturen2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Gothic literature has a tradition of dealing with dark subjects, themes and motifs, as well as depicting fear in different shapes and forms. Dani Cavallaro describes dark fiction in terms of the "aesthetic of the unwelcome". The philosopher Edmund Burke separates the beautiful from the sublime and writes that everything that is capable of producing a terror of pain and death is a source of the sublime. In her essay "On the Supernatural in Poetry", Ann Radcliffe draws a clear line between the concepts of terror and horror and distinguished them as fundamentally different. In this essay, I define the terms horror and terror by following up the research surrounding Radcliffes statement. I begin with the concept of terror that Burke and other writers define as an elevated and positive feeling, then move on to account for the discussion surrounding Matthew Lewis' novel The Monk. It was considered pornographic, lewd and outright dangerous in its obscenity with blatant depictions of violence, gore and sex. Since Radcliffe and Lewis were contemporary I reckon that it is profitable to explore this tension further in my essay. From Radcliffe and Lewis I find out how the concepts of terror and horror have developed with time and how modern theorists conceive this distinction.

Mellan livet och döden: Den litterära gotikens närvaro i dokumentära skildringar av självskada2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Autobiographies and documentaries usually aim to elicit a discussion about social issues by shocking and horrifying readers and viewers, often through graphic imagery.

This study's ambition is to examine how literary documentary borrows from the gothic tradition to depict real societal issues. My aim is to show how the gothic style transcends the borders of the genre and that literary documentary about self-harm tends to work through the same thematic and narrative structures as the literary gothic.

With a focus on contemporary depictions of self-harm and mental illness in young women and girls in Sweden, this analysis explore how the function of sexuality, gender and self-harm in gothic horror can be applied on these texts. At the same time this study explores how selfharming women tend to use gothic imagery to portray the horrors of their own reality that is saturated with extreme and negative emotions.

For comparison, two famous depictions of girls going through puberty from the literary horror genre; Carrie and The Exorcist, are examined to further anchor the connection between femininity, blood and puberty in the gothic theoretical field.

Hotet mot Narnia: Den andre i Aslans rike2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay seeks to investigate identity formation and the role of the oriental other, the Calormene, in C.S. Lewis popular children’s books, The Chronicles of Narnia, as well as the threat levelled at Narnia and what it constitutes.

The oriental other as a threatening corruption is a common image in European colonial discourse, therefore a brief summary on post-colonial theory and critique thereupon and a background on the occidental attitude towards the discursive Orient based mainly on Orientalism by Edward W. Said, as well as a short account of Emile Durkheims theory on social divisions of labour and identity formation in groups is provided in the first theoretical section, Images of the Other.

In the second section the Narnian identity and what it is composed of is examined. Here I argue that the Narnian identity is connected to an ideal and primordial English identity. This is shown primarily through the linking of Narnian nature and food with the English countryside and its “plain food”. Consequently, food in the Narnian space possesses a great power. The food of the Other corrupts while the hearty Narnian or English food holds the power to redeem those corrupted.

The third section is dedicated to the threat against Narnia. This is composed mainly of Calormenes and Witches, both of which are described to be ancient and whose evil, I argue, nonetheless is an eventual consequence of rational thinking and modernity.

In the fourth section the Calormene, the Other in Narnia, is examined. The Calormene society is inextricably linked to slavery, which is portrayed as the utmost consequence of rationality, and characterized by its spiritual poverty. This section also discusses how the Narnian can be corrupted and turned “Other”.

"Such a thing to waste words on": Genus, sexualitet och Beloved i Robin Hobbs The Realm of the Elderlings2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In fantasy literature, representations of gender and sexuality outside of the heteronormative binary have historically been limited. Although queer fantasy is on the rise, depictions of non-conformational identities are still rare and far in-between.

This thesis seeks to examine one of the earlier fantasy representations of a queer character, the non-binary Beloved in Robin Hobbs fantasy series The Realm of the Elderlings in terms of gender and sexuality. Throughout the series, Beloved assumes different identities of various genders and sexual orientations, and continuously claims that these are all equally true and valid representations of themselves, although these are distinctly separated by ways of, often gendered, physical attributes. Therefore, a central part of this thesis will be to examine how these shifts between genders and sexual identities are established performatively, something I will do with the support of Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity as it is presented in Gender Trouble. While the text ultimately lends itself to a reading in Beloved’s favour, they are often othered and met with scorn from other characters of the series, something that is quite central to their characterization. Consequently, this thesis will also investigate these reactions and the often heteronormative and conservative stances they demonstrate, and, most notably, how these reactions mirror exterior societal attitudes and change in accordance with these.

Den tigrerade svenskheten: konstruktionen av en ”svensk” identitet i Jonas Hassen Khemiris roman Montecore: En unik tiger2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This paper is about the construction of a ”Swedish” identity in the novel Montecore: en unik tiger by Jonas Hassen Khemiri (translated in English to Montecore: the silence of the tiger). In the paper I start by, after a short introduction, introducing the theoretical background against which the novel will be analyzed. The main focus is postcolonial theories with Edward Saids work about making “the Other” as a base. I then go through some contemporary Swedish studies about race as a category and internalized racism, make a brief introduction to performativity, to finish with the thought provoking theories about the cyborg by Donna J. Haraway.

In the section about method I present discourse analysis and the social constructionism that permeates postcolonial studies and discourse analysis and therefore the paper.

Finally I analyze the material. In this section I use made-up dialogues to illustrate the different positions the characters take when responding to the imagined community that is Sweden, and the conditions imposed on those wanting to be accepted as Swedes. I use policy documents of a Swedish political party, Sverigedemokraterna (the Sweden Democrats) as a counterpart in the dialogues. Thereafter I have a short conclusion, and then you’re free.

Lugninflammation: den kvinnliga grotesken i Kristina Lugns poesi2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim with this essay is to penetrate the opinions of how women should be represented on screen. I am using a selection of contributions from the gender debate that Lars von Trier´s movie Antichrist caused in Sweden in spring 2009. The focus of the debate was mainly about the way the female actress was displayed. The provocative thing considered by many was that the female part could be interpreted as evil and in connection with Antichrist. But is that a obvious negative way to present women? In a historical view the discussion have been constantly fluctuated when it comes to the ideas of the correct way to visualize women in the movies which have left us without a true answer to that question.

I am interested in investigating what is considered today as the best way to represent women by Swedish debaters.

By using Michel Foucault’s term discourse as theory in a text analyse I am trying to look trough their language and see their ideological position.

The Persistence of Western Women Writers2022Inngår i: The Routledge Companion to Gender and the American West / [ed] Susan Bernardin, London: Routledge, 2022, 1st, s. 105-113Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This essay considers the pitfalls and rewards of using “western women writers” as a critical category of analysis, in part by surveying my own scholarly history with the concept. As a critical paradigm it continually breaks down, and yet, I contend, it persists. Its application yields insights into the texts, authorship, publication, and reception of numerous women writing from and about the West. Equally important, it yields insights into the relationships among these women and the patterns we can identify across their work. It is in large part because these women have been conceived as western in the past--whether by themselves or by publishers, readers, or scholars—that it is useful to continue to conceive of them as western in the present. Thus in addition to, or sometimes even instead of, thinking about what they do as western writers (analyzing their texts for regionally specific arguments), it is productive to think about how they are received as western writers. That is often where the patterns emerge across them, and where we can justifiably generalize. While the diversity of the actual West precludes essentialist claims, views about the West remain remarkably consistent.

Yarden/Yarden: En berättelse om prekaritetens verklighetsuppfattning2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

By using contemorary work-theory this thesis aim to show how Yarden. En berättelse, puts into play the circumstances of precarian work, circumstances that have gender political as well as identity political overtones. It tries to show how the idea of ”class-jouney” is used as a conciliatory element. An element that, acitvitated increasingly towards the end of the text, is significant for the selfs posisiton in relationship to his class identity and the workers collective around him as well as other spheres. It is also significant in relationship to the work which is the writing, and to the product of that work, which is both Yarden and the litterary persona produced by Yarden. This is something that I try to trace to a conflict between class belonging and other identitory political projects that Yarden expresses. The reality which is produced by the text is not only a staging of a litterary persona and the following class-journey. In my thesis I try to show that it is also possible to read it in it self as something that gives us valuable insights on how reality is produced under the circumstances of precarity. Insights that in turn can show us both how the supression of labour is organised in contemporary late-capitalism, and what expressions resistance in turn might take.

Illusion och verklighet: Metaforer och motivkretsar i Stig Dagermans pjäs Den dödsdömde och novellerna ”Den dödsdömde” och ”Mannen från Milesia”2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine metaphors and what may be perceived as motif-circuits in Stig Dagerman’s play Den dödsdömde (The Man Condemned to Death) and the two short stories “Den dödsdömde” (The Man Condemned to Death) and “Mannen från Milesia” (The Man from Milesia). My intention is to discuss a single theme and identity-marks that unites all three works, using Paul Ricoeur’s The Rule of Metaphor (La mêtaphore vive) as well as the “thematic critique” of Jean-Pierre Richard.

What is metaphor for Ricoeur is for Richard themes (theme): an organizing principle, a sort of schedule around which a world is constituted. Hence, I find similarities between the motif-circuits, Ricoeur’s metaphor-theory and Richards’s themes. The motif-circuits: rain, light and darkness, (the) eyes and finally dream and reality, represent the analyses’ thread. The motif-circuits cut through the play and the two short stories. They form a single thematic continuity that binds together the story and move it forward.

The motif-circuits have not only a privileged role in the texts, but above all a connection with Ricoeur’s metaphor-theory and Richard’s themes. My focus shall be affixed upon how the motif-circuits appear and the various charges they receive, depending on the context. The motif-circuits occur separately or in combination. Sometimes they exclude each other, relieve or replace each other. They differ from being abstract, perceptual, illusory or real (concrete). Moreover, the motif-circuits raises in the texts other interesting aspects, such as: consciousness and memory, time and space, life and death, subject and object (man’s role and women’s role), the hole forming a dynamic movement. Finally, one can say that the motif-circuits form a structure within which the action takes place.

"Jag drar mig tillbaka i glappet, som också är en spricka": Ett nomadiskt subjekt blir till i Nina Bouraouis Sauvage2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In this essay called I withdraw into the gap, which is also a crevice. A nomadic subject comes into being in Nina Bouraoui’s Sauvage, I investigate which aspects in the novel play an important part in relation to the protoganist Alya’s process of becoming a subject in the passage from childhood to adulthood. Through Rosi Braidotti’s theories on the nomadic becoming of a subject I investigate a becoming that is nonunitary, non-linear and constantly changing. This becoming happens in the novel between affects like fear, violence, desire and different experiences of time, and also through a non-chronological narrative and a language which can both deceive, and create the world.       My results show that becoming in Sauvage is about being aware of the outside boundaries and one’s own position in relation to those. For Alya, fear and desire work as transformative and transgressional aspects. In between her affective body and the world which tries to force its boundaries on her, she finds that in between those outside images and her inner affective response, there is a space, a gap, and in the movement between is where she becomes who she is in a process that is a constant negotiation. The subject that emerges in the end of the novel is not a unitary subject, but a nomadic one, that is constantly changing and becoming.

Så som bara den som bedragits kan älska: En narratologisk och semiosfärisk undersökning av Per Anders Fogelströms Mina Drömmars Stad2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay, As only the deceived one can love, is to investigate the city character in the book Mina drömmars stad (City of dreams) by swedish author Per Anders Fogelström. I will do this by using narratology and making a narrative analysis of the city as a protagonist, with help from Jimmy Vulovic’s Narrativanalys (”narrative analysis”) and Claes Göran Holmberg’s & Anders Ohlssons Epikanalys – En introduktion (”epic analysis – an introduction”). All of these three theorists use the narratological tool-box of Gérard Genette, and I will use his tools in this essay as well. By doing this I will try to point out what this kind of personification of the city does to the story, and how it affects the readers point of view. One of the steps of the narrative analysis is to seek for information about the protagonist in its own environment, to see if there are any hidden clues about the identity of their character. In his book A universe of the mind – A semiotic theory of culture, Jurij M. Lotman writes about the semiosphere of the home, and how the ultimate place to seek for details about someone’s character is in someone’s home environment or surroundings. He demonstrates his thesis by analyzing the meaning of different homes in Michail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita. Even if I try to read the city as a main character in City of dreams, it is inevitable that the city is also a stage, a scene and the environment where the story takes place. In the end of my analysis I will look to the environment of the city to try to draw conclusions about who this city of dreams really is.

Adaption och subversion: Återbruk, mening och nonsens i Block av Ulf Karl Olov Nilsson2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish contemporary poet Ulf Karl Olov Nilsson (UKON) creates his poems by recycling and manipulating existing material. Though the overall opinion of his work has been positive, the idea that experimental poetry focus shape on the expense of content has led critics to either interpret the nonsensical and absurd aspects of UKON’s poetics as a consequence of the technical methods he uses to create his poetry, or to look beyond the nonsensical and absurd aspects to focus the fact that the poems creates meaning at all. The poems of UKON’s sixth collection of poems, Block (2005), differ from each other in many ways: some poems are lists and other revolves around a person – their content and construction vary and they can hardly be read as an expression of one persons thought. Still, the homogenous visual form creates a sense of uniformity – all the poems are shaped like blocks in different sizes, it has no page numbers and no names has been given the individual poems. By focusing the nonsensical and absurd aspects of UKON’s collection Block, and at the same time read the poetry through the light of the poetic context that UKON is connected to, this essays shows that UKON destroys and creates meaning in a way that is similar to the techniques used by the Victorian nonsense literature. As the Victorian nonsense literature make use of the language’s grammatical rules and genres to give the nonsense text a structure, UKON stages a reciprocal action between making use of and exceeding the conventional use of different language-contexts (e.g. erotic language or expressions such as “one must…”). Thus, the nonsensical aspects of UKON’s poetry are exposed as a consequent course of action to create and destroy meaning and Block can be read as a way to disclose how the language creates and maintains cultural clichés.

I Norrland kan ingen höra dig skrika: En postkolonial läsning av Stefan Spjuts Stallo2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The northern province of Sweden has in both literature and film been depictured as something foreign and mythical, unlike the rest of the country. It has been my purpose to show in this essay that the systematic categorization of Norrland and its literature reveals multiple criteria known to define the colonial era. By reading the novel Stallo by author Stefan Spjut with postcolonial structures in mind I aim to show how the author uses Swedish mythology and through the presence of The Other criticizes colonial structures in place to this day. By examining the gothic atmosphere I intend to indicate how the trolls in the novel figures as both a horror element as well as a representation of nature itself. It is my belief that the author by further reinforcing the mythological in relation to Norrland addresses the problem at hand. That Norrland is still to this day a colony within its own country.

Doktor Moreau och jakten på den etiska figuren: Från misslyckat människoskapande till respektfulla relationer2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

“Doctor Moreau and The Hunt for The Ethical Figure. From unsuccessful man-making to respectful relations with Jacques Derrida, Donna Haraway and H. G. Wells”

In H. G. Wells’ science fiction novel, The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), a scientist on a remote island in the Pacific Ocean attempts to create humans from animals. Wells draws on Charles Darwin’s theories on the origins of species and the descent of man to create a horror story in which the uniqueness of the human is called into question.

This study uses the novel to investigate the re-emergent interest in human-animal relations, within the natural sciences as well as the arts and humanities, in the past twenty years. In what is often termed “the Animal Turn,” theorists such as Jacques Derrida and Donna Haraway, who are at the centre of this study, have dedicated a significant amount of their work to the animal question and in particular to the ethics of inter-species relationships.

Furthermore this essay stages the interaction of fiction and theoretical discourse in an analysis that probes challenges inherent to the relations of humans to other species, such as the practice of eating meat, the killing of animals, and animal rights. Moreover, it considers how the figure of the animal has been used to define the human, as well as to dehumanize people in the justification of abuse and persecution. However, human-animal ethics also has positive connotations, discussed through the figures of positivity and possibility in play, sharing, contact and responsive responsibility.

Taking its inspiration from Karen Barad’s method of diffraction, this study foregrounds new pattern-making while exploring how Derrida’s and Haraway’s strategies for formulating a new ethics are present in their use of tropes and figures.

This study constitutes an attempt to bring the notion of stupidity into relation with ethics and creativity, through a reading of Samuel Beckett's Endgame. Employing Emmanuel Lévinas' theories on ethics - the responsible responsiveness in regard to the Other and the concept of the Face - the objective is to demonstrate how stupidity, conceived as lack of control and knowledge, functions as a precondition for the ethical relation between humans, as well as that of the individual to her creativity.

"En inställd spelning är en spelning det också...": Ulf Lundells olika realiteter och identiteter i romanerna Jack, En varg söker sin flock och Värmen2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Ulf Lundell is one of the most famous songwriters and authors in Sweden. He has written fifteen works of fiction and they’ve all same theme – a lonely man trying to look into his own past life. They are all built on a character, writing from an I-perspective, having a bit of Lundells own biography in there’s personality.

The aim of his thesis is to find out how Ulf Lundell presents him self in his fictive characters, and will trace the authors development from a psychological point of view. The theoretic starting points are Lacans Freudian concepts “idealego”, “egoideal” and “the superego”, describing the psychological alteration at the author.

The examination contains an analysis of Lundells novels Jack, En varg söker sin flock and Värmen, and throws light on the relationship between the author and his characters, and how it developes and changes with Lundells literary development. In this consideration are narrative theories a basic factor.

This work will also try to illustrate what has inspired Lundell in creating his fiction figures, and finally how he creates his own lived life on these literary characters.

    Abstract [en]

In this essay I study two novellas by Anne Charlotte Leffler, “En bal i societeten” and “I krig med samhället”. In order to do this, I use some of the differences between male and female writing that Ingeborg Nordin Hennel discusses in her study “Ämnar kanske fröken publicera något?”: Kvinnligt och manligt i 1880-talets novellistik. For the analysis of “I krig med samhället” I also use the text “Stabat mater” by Julia Kristeva. Anne Charlotte Leffler describes femininity both as a shortcoming and as a possibility in her authorship. In this essay I focus on femininity as a shortcoming. In my opinion “shortcoming” is not the proper description. I have therefore introduced the term “novella of disillusionment” to describe the novellas. My idea is that the female protagonist through disillusionment comes to the understanding of the double standards and limiting conventions of women. This is the insight that underlies femininity as a possibility.

I want to show how the two novellas lead to disillusionment for Arla. In “En bal i societeten”, the young Arla’s disillusionment is about romantic love. The novella criticizes bourgeois matrimony. It also discusses authorship and theatrical art. The novella is impressionistic. I examine the portrayed women because they give a voice to and criticize double standards. Another distinct theme is the relationship between mothers and daughters as part of the oppressive patriarchal system. The men appearing in the novella are more of stereotypes. Their primary interest is in their relationship to Arla. The narrator uses often a double gaze where the second look is female and antipatriarcal.

In the analysis of “I krig med samhället” I focus on Arla’s development. The main male character is a young radical writer, typical of male writers in the 1880s. My interest is solely in his relationship to Arla. His radical ideas do not include the emancipation of women and the companionate marriage proves to be disillusionment for Arla. His view of women is influenced by the ideals of the discourse of the Madonna. This both restricts Arla, and gives her a possible way of life, based on a feminine experience. I also discuss the perspective of the narrator that confronts the views of Lefflers male colleagues. I also discuss the complex relationship between Arla and her teenage daughter.

In the final part of the essay I clarify the disillusionment by comparing Arla’s fate with some works by Leffler that can better be categorized as describing femininity as a possibility, in particular, the novel “En sommarsaga”. In my opinion “I krig med samhället” is the precursor of the novel.

Nya kvinnor och ny samhällskritik: en feministisk läsning av Anne Charlotte Lefflers Tre komedier2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

My essay is about the latter period of Anne Charlotte Leffler’s authorship. In Part I of my essay, I describe her path from the 1880s, where she described femininity as a shortcoming, as writes Ingeborg Nordin-Hennel, towards the 1890s and towards describing femininity as a possibility. This development took place on two levels – on an outer level, where all the woman writers in the late 1880s were influenced and where they were pushed out by the male writers, and on an inner level with Leffler herself.

Her late literary works depict new and more independent types of women, and eroticism is given a more prominent position. In Part II, I study Tre komedier (Three Comedies) which was published in 1891 and which includes the plays Den kärleken (Love is Strange), Familjelycka (Family Happiness), and Moster Malvina (Aunt Malvina). In my opinion, they are early expressions of the New Woman fiction. For my analysis, I use the criteria of genre for the New Woman fiction that is defined by Ebba Witt-Brattström. New Woman fiction is a lost link between the literature of social protest of the 1880s and female modernism. That characterizes, among other things, a new type of woman, who is intellectually and sexually aware. The plot is often contradictory and open-ended which allows scope for interpretation. The protagonist usually has a girlfriend or another woman, whom she can use as a mirror, and there is a new women’s “sistership” emerging, and the urban setting is yet another characteristic. The protagonist often stays at a boarding house or is out on a journey. The new male character is a weakling as opposed to the bourgeois masculinity. These features are distinct in Tre komedier. However, I have discovered a few more criteria.

I also discuss how Leffler, in the comedic form, delivers a pronounced criticism of society. In Tre komedier, the bourgeois matrimony, the bourgeois family, and the treatment of unmarried women are focused upon and criticized. The three plays differ very much from one another in the dramatic forms. Lynn R Wilkinson considers that they are among the first modernistic comedies, and they point forward to authors such as Wilde, Shaw, and Chekhov.

Fantomen: Från ungkarl till hemmaman: Genuskonstruktioner i äventyrsserien Fantomen av Lee Falk2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In this essay I analyse the constructions of gender in the series The Phantom by Lee Falk. I apply David Tjeders readings of the bourgouise masculinity, its sensitive character and great risk of falling into unmanliness, when discussing The Phantom’s masculine development. I have analysed three adventures of The Phantom from the years 1937, 1977 and 1996, all authored by original creator Lee Falk. I argue that The Phantom increases his use of violence, therefore risking a loss of character. The stories re-establishes his masculinity by portraying the villains more monstrously. My thesis is that The Phantom's need  to maintain a bourgeouis masculinity ceases as the popular culture has developed new masculine ideals.

Making Home: Orphanhood, kinship, and cultural memory in contemporary American novels2014 (oppl. 1)Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Making Home explores the figure of the orphan child in a broad selection of contemporary US novels by popular and critically acclaimed authors Barbara Kingsolver, Linda Hogan, Leslie Marmon Silko, Marilynne Robinson, Michal Cunningham, Jonathan Safran Foer, John Irving, Kaye Gibbons, Octavia Butler, Jewelle Gomez and Toni Morrison. The orphan child is a continuous presence in US literature, not only in children’s books and nineteenth-century texts, but also in a variety of genres of contemporary fiction for adults. Making Home examines the meanings of this trope in the contexts of American literary history, social history and ideologies of family, race and nation. It argues that contemporary orphan characters function both as links to literary history and as figures around which authors can critique the limits of literary history, family identity and national belonging.

Varianter och versioner: Repetition i Marguerite Duras Älskaren och Monika Fagerholms Den amerikanska flickan2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the role of repetition in the two novels Älskaren (The Lover) by Marguerite Duras and Den amerikanska flickan (The American Girl) by Monika Fagerholm, through a thematic and comparative reading. The study mainly uses Bruce F. Kawin’s analysis of repetition in literature and language as well as it refers to Cathy Jellenik and her analysis of rewriting in the works of Duras. The study also takes into Julia Kristeva’s idea of Duras as a writer lacking of catharsis. Furthermore, the essay analyses both novels by applying Sigmund Freud’s term “repetition compulsion”.

The essay shows how Fagerholm and Duras both use permissive writing, which means that the authors boldly write clichéd replications in their texts. Both writers practice what Kristeva calls “an aesthetics of awkwardness”. Aswell, the authors both question whether a story at all is able to be told: they work with what Jellenik calls “an aesthetics of doubt”, but in different ways. Moreover, by using the work of Kawin, the essay shows how the authors have different ways of handling time. The study shows indications of repetition compulsion in the characters and also exemplifies instances of what Kristeva calls “reduplication”. Through this a fragmentary and Nietzschean perspective of the self is displayed in the novels. The study review how Duras can be said to be a writer lacking of catharsis, while Fagerholm on the other hand liberates one of her protagonists from repetition compulsion by allowing the character to undergo a catharsis.

Finally, the essay conclusion points out that Duras and Fagerholm are postmodern writers who know how to challenge the concept of truth. Even if they are different writers in many aspects, they both use repetition as a method to express something unspeakable. They can be said to write also by an aesthetics of search for the truth; a search for an origin tale which they both argue as biased and is therefore impossible to capture.

En välsignelse på jorden: Det goda äktenskapet som normaltillstånd och mål i tre romaner från 1860-talet2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine marriage as something both desirable and normal in three popular novels from the 1860s about marriage: Rosa Carlén’s Agnes Tell: en äktenskapshistoria (1860), Marie Sophie Schwartz’s Alma eller De moderna äktenskapen (1860) and Sara Pfeiffer’s Aurora Trampe (1867). Using a theoretical perspective from Michel Foucault and Judith Butler, I have analysed the novels as being producers of, and resistance against, norms.

The good marriage is partly depicted as a utopian vision in the novels, which therefore functions as fantasies for the readers. But it is also depicted as a realistic possibility. Though difficult to achieve, the main characters reach the goal through individual improvement towards correct behaviour.

The question for the main characters is not whether they are going to marry or not, but how to make their marriages good ones. Other options than marriage are ignored or described as faulty. At the same time, alternatives and resistance to the description of the good marriage and the roles of husband and wife are shown through distortions and discords. This can reveal the good marriage as a constructed ideal. Failure to conform to the expected roles and people standing outside the marital discourse, are ridiculed and described as deviant; but the mere existence of these failures makes the ideal seem less natural.

Omstörtande och återupprättelse: begärsstrukturer och budskap i Aurora Ljungstedts En jägares historier2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how the Swedish writer Aurora Ljungstedt describes relations and desire in her En jägares historier, and what political message she tries to send her audience through that description.

I have applied Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s theory of erotic triangles to the relationships in En jägares historier and found that they are structured in the way Sedgwick describes. The structure works to uphold and, when needed, re-establish patriarchal order in the book. Most female characters in En jägares historier are – also in line with Sedgwick’s theory – no more than articles of trade between men. Only one woman surpasses this female role, and she is also the only main character in the book who is not involved in any triangular desire.

Ljungstedt uses a male perspective, the flaneur, to tell her story, which gives her opportunity to speak ironically of the male view on women. Still, her view on patriarchy and women’s liberation is ambivalent – the fall of patriarchy is connected with revolutionary tendencies that she clearly dislikes – instead, her political message becomes clear in the constantly underlying motives of devotion and commitment. These motives are most clearly illustrated in the recurrent motive of parents abandoning their children. The positive change from passivity and indifference to involvement and responsibility pervades the entire book.

    Abstract [en]

Using Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre (1847) as a backdrop, this article examines the symbol of slavery in Fredrika Bremer's novel The Neighbours (1837). In particular, the character Hagar (mirrored in Jane Eyre by Bertha Mason) is analysed. The Neighbours depict slavery both on a literal and a symbolic level; firstly, in the representation of colonial plantations and transatlantic slave trade and secondly as a symbol of white women's submission. The slave trade is described as fundamentally un-Swedish, and Swedes complicit in slave trade as corrupted by foreigners. The wrongs of oppression are doubled with the wrongs of being oppressed, and both owning and being slave are constructed as non-Swedish positions marked by race. Building on the slave as a symbol, submission appears as a counter image of white femininity. Being a proper woman equals not allowing oneself to be treated as a slave.
