Theorizing Social Sustainability and Justice in Marine Spatial Planning: Democracy, Diversity, and Equity2020Inngår i: Sustainability, E-ISSN 2071-1050, Vol. 12, nr 6, artikkel-id 2560Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article elaborates a conceptual framework to examine social sustainability in marinespatial planning (MSP). Based on a critical literature review of key texts on social sustainabilityin MSP and the broader sustainable development literature we show the need to elaborate acogent and comprehensive approach for the analysis and pursuit of social sustainability linkedto the sea. We then theorize social sustainability by developing a conceptual framework throughintegrating three dimensions: Recognition, Representation and Distribution. While these three socialsustainability/justice features clearly overlap and are interdependent in practice, the conceptualthinking underpinning each of them is distinctive and when taken together they contributetowards conceiving social sustainability as a pillar of sustainability. Our approach can support ananalysis/evaluation of MSP in that, first, its broad scope and adaptability makes it suitable to examinethe wide range of claims, demands, and concerns that are likely to be encountered across dierentpractical MSP settings. Second, it acknowledges the opportunities and challenges of assessing, implementing, and achieving social justice within a broader sustainability framework.

Literal Tricks of the Trade: The Possibilities and Contradictions of Swedish Physicians’ Everyday Resistance in the Sickness Certification Process2020Inngår i: Journal of Resistance Studies, ISSN 2001-9947, Vol. 6, nr 1, s. 8-39Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article deals with the ways Swedish General practitioners (GPs) informally deal with the stricter standards of sickness certification and the implications of understanding these ways in terms of ‘resistance.’ In recent decades, procedural and bureaucratic changes within the Swedish sickness benefit system have curtailed physicians’ clinical discretion with regards to the sickness benefit approval for patients. By both formal and informal means, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (SSIA) has consolidated its power over the decision-making process. Despite widespread dissatisfaction among physicians with the current system, acts of open defiance do not seem to occur. However, as shown in a recent qualitative study, Swedish General practitioners have developed informal ‘techniques’ (ranging from simple exaggerations in the certificates to complex constructions of apparent objectivity) for intentionally circumventing the stricter sickness certification standards. Taking that study as a point of departure, this article will consider the use of techniques as a form of everyday resistance. Three dimensions of ambiguity arise which require further attention, namely: (1) the multiple motives and shifting target of resistance; (2) the complex blend of power and powerlessness which defines the situation of GPs and their resistance, and (3) the fundamental ambiguity of the resistant act of issuing sickness certificates tactically, as a particular mix of compliance and resistance.

Sörjbara liv2021 (oppl. 1)Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Socio-Cultural Norms, Human Rights and Access to Water and Sanitation2017Inngår i: The Human Right to Water: Theory, Practice and Prospects / [ed] Malcolm Langford; Anna F. S. Russell, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2017, s. 603-623Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Water is a natural resource indispensable for women, men and children to leadhealthy lives with dignity. Access to water has found recognition as a humanrights standard by being implied within various international treaties, declarationsand other instruments. In 2002, it was acknowledged as an inextricable aspect of Articles 11 and 12 of the International Covenant on Economic,Social and Cultural Rights. Access to adequate sanitation is likewise considered indispensable for leading a life with dignity. Subsequently, it has been treated as a right alongside water, potentially as a twinned right.

Recognition of access to water and sanitation as a human right is often seenas important because it clarifies the role of States in improving access to basicservices or supply, sets standards that can be monitored and prioritises those currently without access, particularly the vulnerable and marginalised, in anon-discriminatory manner. Consequently, significant focus has remained onthe machinery and mechanisms for implementing the right. Perhaps animportant assumption is that, once action for implementing the right is undertaken, access to water and sanitation and hence realisation of the rightwill be progressively achieved. However, do actions taken to implement the right necessarily lead to its realisation? Can a duty bearer guarantee exercise of the right by rights holders solely because essential legal frameworks have beencreated and actions within their scope undertaken?

Similar questions have been raised elsewhere. For instance, some have argued that a human rights-based approach brings a focus to community power relations, a factor that can otherwise impinge on effective access to resources by more marginalised groups. From an anthropological perspective, it has been argued that the practice of human rights takes place between different global and local understandings and meanings of humanness and rights. One sociology of law perspective contends that law, including international legal and political agreements, often obtains content only when first implemented. Therefore implementation should be investigated atthe local level.

It has also been argued that the human right to water is not enjoyed automatically by rights holders solely because relevant policies and laws havebeen created, institutional frameworks laid down, or appropriate programmesand interventions implemented. It is important to consider the ‘context’ in which these actions unfold, which primarily deal with water resources management and water governance questions.

Drawing upon such arguments, and looking at the realities on the groundin regard to the realisation of the right to water and sanitation in India, in particular, this chapter seeks to explore the processes lying at the interface between the community where rights holders lead their lives and the State that implements actions in accordance with the legal formulation of the right.

The Human Right to Water: From Concept to Reality2016Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The discourse on the human right to water presents deliberations on the concept, content and rationale for the right, with little attention to the practical question of translating the right into reality. This book aims to fill this void by focusing on ‘realization’ of the right by its holders, examining how effective the mechanisms are for ‘implementing’ the right in enabling its universal realization. In a quest to answer this question, the book draws a conceptual differentiation between ‘implementation’ and ‘realization’ of the right, arguing that unlike implementation - which is an objective process of creation - and implementation of measures such as legal frameworks, institutional structures or policy and action guidelines, realization of the right is a subjective process that extends much beyond. It takes shape within specific contextual settings which may include varied situations, yet remains neglected in the related academic and action forums. This book attempts to address this void by discussing some of the most significant contexts and the underlying problems and concerns that strongly influence realization of the human right to water. It contends that if the right is to be truly realized, these different contexts - which can be further classified as 'objective' and 'subjective' - must be understood, analysed and appropriately addressed before framing and implementing relevant action. The book further situates the human right to water discourse in a broader interdisciplinary perspective, expanding its scope beyond the narrower legal dimensions, linking it to the wider field of water resources management/governance. Through the novel ideas it proposes, the book makes an innovative and unique contribution in the field of human right to water which is of great scientific value.

    Gender and water management: some policy reflections2006Inngår i: Water Policy, ISSN 1366-7017, E-ISSN 1996-9759, Vol. 8, nr 2, s. 183-200Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The importance of gender concern in water sector is paramount, being seen as the harbinger of greater efficiency and effectiveness as well as equity. Consequently, there has been a continuing trend of designing water management policies with emphasis ranging from promoting participation of women in management of water projects in particular to supporting “gender-balanced” development of the water sector in general. How effective have these policies been in addressing such basic concerns? What are the local water users' perceptions about effectiveness of the policies in addressing their realistic gendered needs and priorities? While “women” have received much attention, how well does the gender concern in the policies integrate “men”? Do “effectiveness” and “equity” as underlying policy goals reflect the water users' perceptions as well? The paper attempts to evaluate the existing policies within the context of local communities where these are operational and proposes “facilitation of gender role performance” as a suitable policy alternative.

Resolving Water Conflicts in Mining Areas of Ghana Through Public Participation A Communication Perspective2007Inngår i: Journal of Creative Communications, ISSN 0973-2586, Vol. 2, nr 3, s. 361-382Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Mining as a sector is vital to a country's economic growth but the impact of the activities on environment can be an important cause of concern. In Wassa West district of Ghana, mining as an industry has been promoted in the recent past, but with significant impact on environmental aspects, especially water, leading to conflicts between the local communities and the mining companies. The practical theory of ‘Trinity of Voice’ (TOV) has been proposed for understanding the community-related intricacies underlying multi-stakeholder decision-making processes and proposing a futuristic course of action for effective public participation in the same. This article attempts to understand the causes underlying the mining-related water conflicts in Ghana using the TOV theory. Using this theory, the article proposes a practical framework for enhanced effective participation of members from local host communities that in turn can enable resolving the existing conflicts and preventing the same in future.

Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainable Water management in the Peri-Urban: Towards a better understanding of opportunities and constraints in Stockholm County, Sweden2021Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are increasingly reckoned as viable solutions to address water related societal challenges and as a sustainable strategic approach to manage water in terms of quality, quantity and flow. NATWIP, an EU-Cooperation Water-JPI Project, within which this abstract is produced, aims to contribute to closing the water cycle gap by exploring these questions in the peri-urban context, being transitional zones in the process of increasing urbanization. An assessment framework has been developed in NATWIP as a tool to analyze the contextual factors and driving forces, governance processes and the sustainability criteria of NBS projects in the peri-urban context of 6 countries in Europe and outside.

This presentation will focus on the findings from two case studies conducted in Stockholm County, Sweden that apply varied types of NBS interventions at different scales and to deal with different water challenges. The first case explores NBS application at decentralized scale as a means for improving wastewater treatment and management in Stockholm Archipelago and its environmental impact on the Baltic Sea, where many of the summerhouses lie outside the municipal network. The second case addresses various water pressures including climate change impacts and flooding at the sub-urban scale with the aim of planning an urban district that integrate spatially ambitious NBS in the form of blue-green structures for multifunctional urban spaces and improving ecosystem services.

The findings of the case studies will be presented to draw parallels and contrasts regarding their contexts, and the processes and socioeconomic and environmental benefits concerning NBS and to conclude on general lessons regarding opportunities and constraints for sustainable up-taking of NBS measures.

    Accessing water through a rights-based approach: problems and prospects regarding children2011Inngår i: Water Policy, ISSN 1366-7017, E-ISSN 1996-9759, Vol. 14, nr 2, s. 298-318Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The right to water has been recently recognized as a fundamental human right by the United Nations, thereby clarifying its status as ‘legally binding’, making it ‘justiciable’ and enforceable. This development has been heralded as a key that holds great potential to change the lives of the billions who still lack access to clean water. Many of those deprived of enjoyment of the right are children, who constitute up to a third of the population in the developing world. What is the value added of the rights-based approach for access to water, especially for children? Would recognition of the right to water as legally binding deliver real benefits to children in improving their access to water? Does it really offer anything new that can help them realize their right to water more effectively? These questions will be explored in this paper using empirical evidence from India, where water has been legally interpreted as a fundamental right, and as a welfare state, where there has been consistent effort on part of the state to improve children's access to water.

    Abstract [en]

Nandita Singh and her colleagues look at children’s rightto water in India. They argue for the exercise of the right by childrenby analyzing the universal normative-legal framework and itsdifference to the local socio-culturally defined framework. Theysuggest that defining problems and designing actions only withinthe normative-legal framework can obscure understanding thecritical realities at the right-holders’ end. They suggest thatinterventions at various levels, such as through policy and targetedprogrammes, have at best provided an ‘enabling environment’,but the process of implementation of children’s rights at theright-holders’ end is to date an incomplete socio-cultural process.

Gender And Water From A Human Rights Perspective: The Role Of Context In Translating International Norms Into Local Action2008Inngår i: Rural Society, ISSN 1037-1656, E-ISSN 2204-0536, Vol. 18, nr 3, s. 185-193Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

An important area in the discourse on gender and water is water supply where women are seen as the key actors and beneficiaries. A human rights approach to development has been adopted with access to safe water explicitly recognized as a basic human right. This right places a legal obligation upon governments to translate the international norms into practice. But does explicitly acknowledging the human right to water make a practical difference in women’s lives? Using an actor-oriented perspective, this paper analyzes how the international legal norms for realization of the right get reconstructed in local communities where women are the right holders. The empirical data for the analysis will be drawn from a first-hand qualitative study in rural India. The findings of the study show how the socio-cultural matrix provides the environment for implementing the right and determines its equitable and effective exercise by women.

Development of anoxia during the Holocene fresh-brackish water transition in the Baltic Sea2001Inngår i: Marine Geology, ISSN 0025-3227, E-ISSN 1872-6151, Vol. 177, s. 221-242Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

One of the most pronounced environmental changes during the Holocene Baltic Sea history was the transition from the freshwater Ancylus Lake to the brackish water Litorina Sea. The establishment of brackish conditions during this transition (the A/L) was caused by an interplay of sea level rise and subsidence of sills in the Danish Straits. The northward progression of salt water influence caused the gradual and transgressive development of a halocline which obstructed vertical water circulation in the deep depositional basins. It caused changes in surface water properties (mirrored by diatom flora and productivity levels), in redox conditions of bottom waters, in organic carbon preservation of sediments, and in nutrient cycling. In seven cores from the Arkona, Bornholm and Gotland Basins, the A/L transition was WC dated and studied in high-resolution samples for minor and major element composition. The earliest marine inflows were small and can only be detected by sedimentary properties in the southern Baltic. Further north the salinity increase was gradual and retarded; only when the connection through the Danish Straits was well established the entire Baltic proper became brackish with a stratified water column. This development took altogether 2000 C-14 yr (c. 9000-7000 BP). Diatom analyses indicate a fast increase in salinity c. 7000 C-14 yr BP, which coincides with a transgressive phase in the straits, In the Gotland Basin, deposition of laminated sediments and periodically euxinic conditions were established first at the deepest bottoms, and rose to shallower water depth as the basin was gradually filled with dense brackish water. The laminated sequences have high organic carbon contents, which is attributed to better preservation under anoxic conditions. Litorina sediments from the Arkona and Bornholm Basins are bioturbated even though conditions became more reducing also in these sediments during the A/L transition. The development of reducing conditions during the A/L transition probably caused Pre-mobilization from the sediments and a decrease in the rates of denitrification. Both factors increased primary productivity. A comparison between isochronous sediments from different basins shows that certain elements (Mo, Cu, V and Cd) are enriched sediments deposited during predominantly anoxic conditions.

    Abstract [en]

Democratic societies face the challenge of effecting sustainability transformations, allowing for variously imagined futures and underpinned by a diversity of practices of knowledge production and action. This article investigates how political imagination of sustainable futures informs the ways knowledge and action are understood and linked in sustainability and research policy, and what potential implications this has for democratic transformative change. Empirically, the article analyses the overarching sustainability and research policies in Sweden, focusing on the central documents produced by the government and public research financiers. The analysis shows parallels between the conceptualisations of sustainability and knowledge-action, characterised by linearity, instrumentalisation of knowledge and circumscription of power-sharing spaces for knowledge creation against the background of endorsement of collaborations between academia and society. Such conceptualisations, apart from sending mixed signals to sustainability researchers and practitioners, potentially enable knowledge and action processes driven by impact, competitiveness and atomisation, precluding the exercise of the intrinsic value of democratic knowledge and action practices necessary for reflexive governance of transformations towards sustainability.

    Abstract [sv]

Dynamic capabilities and strategic reorientation towards decarbonisation in Baltic Sea shipping2020Inngår i: Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions, ISSN 2210-4224, E-ISSN 2210-4232, Vol. 37, s. 187-202Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Despite the challenges of decarbonisation faced by the shipping sector, this topic has rarely been addressed in sustainability transitions studies. This paper questions common views of established firms as agents resisting change and broadens discussions on the role of incumbents and strategic reorientation. Using the dynamic capabilities approach, we provide a deeper understanding of firms’ strategic reorientation over time. Qualitative content analysis is applied to data from interviews, companies’ reports and observations to address questions on how and why incumbent shipping firms in the Baltic Sea region reoriented towards decarbonisation in 2007−2018. We demonstrate that the engagement in decarbonisation has been a gradual process, characterised by a shift from reactive strategies to a mixed portfolio of integrated active and proactive innovation strategies. Although firms experiment with decarbonisation through alternative energy solutions, they simultaneously continue to devote considerable attention to less radical innovations such as increased energy efficiency.

Revival of wind‐powered shipping: Comparing the early‐stage innovation process of an incumbent and a newcomer firm2023Inngår i: Business Strategy and the Environment, ISSN 0964-4733, E-ISSN 1099-0836, Vol. 32, nr 2, s. 958-975Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Despite the urgency of decarbonising, the shipping sector has demonstrated a slow-paced response to climate change challenges. Some frontrunner firms are engaged in sustainability-oriented innovation processes. However, there is limited knowledge of how such processes emerge and contribute to societal sustainability transitions and what the role of technology is in companies' (re)orientation towards sustainable business models. This study contributes to filling these gaps through a comparative case study of the ongoing innovation process within an incumbent and a newcomer firm developing wind-powered energy solutions for deep-sea transportation. The study's findings bear implications for theory and practice. This paper's combination of a dynamic capabilities approach and a multi-level perspective from sustainability transitions research is a conceptual novelty, enabling an understanding of the activities involved in the (re)orientation process towards sustainable business from a company's perspective, as well as broader societal and sustainability needs.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This paper proposes a phenomenological understanding of alexithymia. The disturbance -- an inability to express feelings -- is presented, and conceptual problems concerning the diagnosis and theories of its etiology are discussed. In a survey of the clinical literature, explanatory theories suggested in the fields of neurophysiology and psychoanalysis are scrutinized. Three territories that fail to relate to each other in a proper way in the alexithymic personality type -- language, feeling, and body -- are by these means identified. In order to reach a coherent understanding of alexithymia, a phenomenological interpretation is developed with the aid of the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. The hermeneutics of "being-in-the-world" that Heidegger outlines in his first important work, Sein und Zeit, is utilized to find a connection between body, feeling, and language as meaning-structuring phenomena. The "worldliness" of the alexithymic person is understood as a defective form of attunement, similar to what Heidegger develops as das Man. The analysis of this form of being-in-the-world makes it possible to understand alexithymia as a defective meaning structure that embraces the social communion of language as well as the living body of...

    Freud’s Philosophy of the Uncanny1999Inngår i: Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review, ISSN 0106-2301, E-ISSN 1600-0803, Vol. 22, s. 239-254Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is an attempt to uncover and bring to a coherent interpretation Freud´s thoughts on the phenomenon of uncanniness. Starting out with the essay "The uncanny" the author wants to show that uncanniness plays an important role in the turn that Freud´s thinking goes through at this time, and that the concept can serve as a springboard for a critical, phenomenological reading of Freud´s thoughts on the development of the ego. The analysis of the phenomenon of uncanniness itself tends to disrupt the coherence of Freud´s earlier views and pushes him towards his later thinking. "Unheimlich" in German has the double meaning of uncanny and unhomelike, and what is not at home in itself in an uncanny sense, according to Freud, is precisely the human ego. Freud, in "The uncanny" links the interpretation of uncanniness to compulsive repetition and thus makes the connection to trauma and birth anxiety discussed in later works such as "Beyond the pleasure principle" and "Inhibitions, symptoms and anxiety". The origin of our general sensitivity to the uncanny is thus, according to Freud, the loss of the mother suffered by the child as a kind of a priori traumatic experience, which is also the very event that makes the child into an ego. The understanding of traumatic neuroses and other forms of mental illness is consequently linked to an analysis of this uncanniness of life.

    Abstract [sv]

Scenarios for sustainable futures beyond GDP growth 20502019Inngår i: Futures: The journal of policy, planning and futures studies, ISSN 0016-3287, E-ISSN 1873-6378, Vol. 111, s. 1-14Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The idea of continued economic growth is increasingly questioned and critically analysed on the basis of its potential negative sustainability impact. Along with the critique, visions and strategies for alternative systems need also be brought onto the agenda. The aim of this paper is to present the qualitative content of scenarios that explore sustainability strategies for Swedish society when economic growth is not seen as an end in itself, and instead the objective is other values/targets that society might wish to achieve. Multi-target backcasting scenarios are developed that illustrate future states in which four sustainability targets (climate, land use, participation, and resource security) are to be attained. The focus of these four scenarios is: 1) a Collaborative economy, 2) Local self-sufficiency, 3) Automation for quality of life, and 4) Circular economy in the welfare state. In the paper, we also present the process of the development of the scenarios, and feedback from stakeholders. Although the focus is on Sweden, the process and scenarios may also be relevant for other similar countries. The scenarios are discussed in terms of their relevance and their purpose, the fulfilment of the sustainability targets, and the multi-target approach.

Rethinking justice as recognition in energy transitions and planned coal phase-out in Poland2024Inngår i: Energy Research & Social Science, ISSN 2214-6296, E-ISSN 2214-6326, Vol. 112, artikkel-id 103507Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The implications of energy transitions extend beyond the often-discussed effects on jobs and retraining opportunities for workers in the carbon-intensive industries. This paper argues that the concept of justice as recognition has an untapped potential for exploring diverse types of injustices that have not received sufficient attention so far. This paper contributes to the critical discussion of the concept of recognition-based energy justice by considering recognition theory by Fraser, which has become an established approach in energy justice literature, and other recognition theories, which have already been discussed in environmental justice literature, in the context of energy transitions. Five conceptions of recognition are distinguished: the understanding of recognition as (a) equal standing without cultural domination, disrespect, and non-recognition; (b) deeper inclusion (inclusive narratives, rhetoric and greetings); (c) respect for identity and culture; (d) self-esteem; and (e) the absence of violence. The conceptual discussion is followed by an empirical analysis of recognition-based justice in the case of the planned coal phase-out in Poland. Building on semi-structured interviews with stakeholders and diverse texts, the analysis demonstrates that in the case of the planned coal phase-out in Poland, three aspects of recognition may be particularly relevant – non-recognition in energy transitions, the self-esteem of local communities, and respect for culture and identity. The paper then argues that a pluralist approach to studies of recognition in energy transitions based on awareness about socio-cultural contexts of studied cases is necessary.

"När jag kliver över tröskeln hos någon, då finns inte omvärlden”: En intervjustudie om emotionellt arbete inom hemtjänstens nattpatrull2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Care work is not a new subject for feminist research. However, it is still important to study because of the persistent social devaluation of care workers. Financial cutbacks, the intensification of work and the general insecurity of the labour market have meant additional challenges for women, who make up the overwhelming majority of those who perform this type of work. Nowadays, women continue to be over-represented in caring and “emotional” work. In this thesis, I focus on home care work as a particular form of care work and aim to analyse care workers’ emotional management and perceptions of their current work situation. The thesis is based on a qualitative study through interviews with night-time home care workers. Building on the theory of “emotional labour” as presented by Arlie Russel Hochschild (1983) in The Managed Heart, this paper argues that working at night poses additional emotional challenges to an already affected workforce. In a time of prominent challenges in Swedish healthcare, care workers must adapt to new ways of dealing with emotions.

Sustainable solutions and important factors for developing Smart Tourism in Estonian Cities2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Over the last few decades, major changes have taken place in the world due to the riseof technology. Industrial mass-based cities have been replaced by post-industrial cities. At the same time, urban development is affected by both global and local processes. Knowledge, innovation and creativity are central to urban development to create a higher quality and more attractive living environment. Smart cities are part of nowadays urban development. Smart cities focus on sustainability and overall improvement of citizen’s life quality in the cities by implementing ICT solutions in different areas of cities.

This research focused on Estonian cities of Tallinn and Tartu and their smart solutions in different smart city dimensions. The purpose of this research was to find out Estonian hotel employees' views of current smart tourism solutions in Estonian cities and according to the answers to determine development areas of the cities. For data collection method, Estonian hotel employees from Tallinn and Tartu were interviewed. This research revealed that most respondents were familiar with the smart tourism solutions and it’s challenges.

Science-policy interaction in the governance of complex socio-ecological risks: The case of chemicals management in the Baltic Sea2014Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis, I examine knowledge production and science-policy interaction associated with the management of chemical substances in the Baltic Sea under conditions of uncertainty and complexity. The thesis is primarily based on a qualitative analysis of policy documents and reports produced by the European Union (EU), the Helsinki Commission, the Swedish Chemicals Agency, and Gothenburg municipality, as well as 30 semi-structured interviews with scientific experts, policy makers, and government officials with knowledge and working experience in the relevant policy arenas.

I identify and examine key challenges of science-policy interaction associated with the management of chemical substances in the Baltic Sea, such as lack of data, uncertainty, and complexity (Article I). I further argue that the current model of science-policy interaction fails to adequately handle and account for these challenges (e.g. uncertainty in Article II).

Scientists and policy makers have made substantial (and sometimes successful) efforts to understand and counteract negative environmental trends in the Baltic Sea. However, on the basis of this empirical analysis, I conclude that the uncertainties tied to the complex chemical risks in the Baltic Sea region are too large and multifaceted to be adequately addressed by the “modern science-policy model” underpinning most contemporary risk assessments. Linked to this analysis, I identify several possible ways to improve the situation, for example new tools and methods for handling uncertainty as well as alternative models for science-policy interaction.

As a consequence, I explore the potential of alternative models of science-policy interaction, giving particular attention to the participatory model and the associated idea of post-normal science. The results highlight the substantial amount of rhetoric in EU sources about recommending wider public involvement in policies, but also reveal that there is a different situation in practice. The introduction of more radical approaches (such as post-normal science) to knowledge co-production and participation would require epistemological, institutional, and constitutional changes that are not feasible in the foreseeable future – at least for the case of chemical substances (Article III).

Improvements (methodological, institutional and so on) in the current modern model of science-policy interaction are just as important as the development of alternative modes of science-policy interaction (Article IV). However, the general conclusion of this thesis is that there is a need to rethink current science-policy interaction and in the process “break through” the widespread institutional denial of irreducible uncertainties.

A feminist critical discourse analysis of Sida’s gender ideology2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study offers a feminist critical discourse analysis of how Sida’s discourses can be viewed as consolidating a gender ideology and power asymmetries in gendered social orders. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) and feminist critical discourse analysis (FCDA) offer the theoretical and methodological framework to the investigation of gender ideology in Sida’s discourses. Postcolonial theory offers an additional theoretical framework with explanatory understandings of the ideological assumptions identified.

According to the findings and in the light of chosen theories, this study suggests that a gender ideology that is underpinned by colonial and capitalist ideologies can be identified in Sida’s discourses. The results show that analyzes of how power systems operate in complex ways to produce gendered inequalities are not accounted for by Sida, whereby their contestation and transformation is hindered. It is also suggested that Sida, in complicity with other actors in the international development arena, has appropriated and distorted feminist concepts in a way that conceals dominant group interest and power dynamics. By shifting the focus away from such, it is further argued that Sida risks reproducing colonial images of underdevelopment and vulnerability as inherent to marginalized groups and as especially inherent to women.

This study further suggests that Sida’s consolidating of power asymmetries in discourses is partially explained by the intertwining of institutions and discourses in the international development arena. The reasons behind the power of the identified discourses are argued to serve the maintenance of global hierarchies based on constructions of race and sex, in order to ensure a status quo in the capitalist process of accumulation by dispossession, which continues to benefit wealthy northern countries like Sweden.

    Abstract [sv]

Exploring the Role of Aid in the Malawian and Zambian Health Sectors: To what extent does development assistance contribute to aid dependency in Malawi and Zambia?2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Aid is an important topic in development sector current discussions are polarised thereby creating a need for further research. This essay assesses the role that Malawi and Zambia plays in realising its development outcomes including in the area of health. There is a need to appreciate the variables that contribute to the inability of most countries in sub-Saharan Africa to finance their domestic expenditure related to healthcare. In this situation, foreign aid which has received marked interest by scholars over the past decade and is used to supplement incomes of developing countries like Malawi and Zambia. Debate on the effectiveness of aid is polarised, while highly concerned scholars see aid as ineffective and a contributor to the poor performance of economies in developing countries, others see it as essential in the achievement of development outcomes. This thesis explores the extent to which development assistance contributes to dependency in Malawi and Zambia. It further examines the link between aid and the Malawian and Zambian health sectors. The study similarly considers the role of development assistance for health in realising outcomes related to maternal health in line with SDG 3.1. By identifying two countries in sub-Saharan Africa, this essay underscores the similarities between Malawi and Zambia analysed through a historical context, health systems structures, child and maternal mortality rates and health programme models. The essay concludesthat social, political and economic barriers present challenges in financing healthcare in Malawi and Zambia. Aid contributes to dependency in the study countries.

    Abstract [en]

In this chapter we set out certain guiding co-ordinates for future critical methodologies for dementia studies and appraise existing approaches through a critical lens. The chapter brings into dialogue the work of two critical commentators and considers the implications of their work for dementia studies. The first, Alison Kafer, has outlined an integrative approach that marries feminist, queer and crip perspectives to propose a political-relational framing of illness and disability. The second, Patti Lather, a feminist ethnographer, has called for a different kind of ethnography, one that works in the ruins of confident social sciences and that embraces uncertainty and unknowing as methodological strengths. We focus particularly upon word-based and spoken methods, raising questions about the status of this type of research data and how it is handled and subsequently communicated. In particular, we seek to disrupt and open to question common assumptions, routines and unmarked aspects of the research process in dementia scholarship. Drawing upon arguments and insights developed in the course of this book, our discussion leads to a call for dementia researchers to bring ourselves closer in to the experiences of people living with dementia while questioning and distancing ourselves from notions of dementia as a fixed and stable category.
