Intern kommunikation under krissituation: en kvalitativ studie av Polismyndighetens interna kommunikation under och efter terrorattentatet i december 20102011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

To have an effective internal communication within an organization is of utmost importance. To also have a well-functioning internal communication during a crisis event is fundamental.

Today, communities and organizations are often placed in different types of problematic and threatening situations. This is almost inevitable. However, the communication about these situations is manageable. In the winter of 2010 the communication of the Police Authority were put to the test, because of a terrorist attack that also included a suicide bomber.

This essay aims and investigates the police's internal communication process during this event. The intention is to report on whether rhetorical strategies such as rhetorical situation, definition and approach, has been taken into consideration in the internal communication. Through the use of a qualitative case study method the internal written communication were analyzed.

The study indicates that several elements within the internal crisis communication can be linked with various rhetorical strategies and models. However, there are parts that can be improved.

Typografins tolkning: En undersökning av typografins betydelse vid tolkning av text2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper addresses the question about what role typography plays in the interpretation of a text. From three different handbooks in typography arguments are gathered and categorized in to three categories: roman types, san serif and others. Interviews with people from the graphic design area are also a part of the paper and are accounted for in the discussion part of the paper. Areas of theory are a broad hermeneutic view based on Hans-Georg Gadamers thoughts, which have sub categories such as: Michel Foucault’s theory about discourses, John Swales genre theory and Anders Björkvall’s thoughts on typography and multi-modal texts. The result of the paper is that all typography, even the one often called the invisible typography, is interpreted by the reader who gathers it’s pre-knowledge from genre, history, culture and discourses. This means that typography plays an important role in the interpretation of a text. Key words: typography, interpretation, hermeneutic, Hans- Georg Gadamer, discourse, Michel Foucault, genre analysis, John Swales, Multi- modal, Anders Björkvall, semiotic.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Race and whiteness: A critical discourse analysis of teachers' understanding and attitudes concerning race2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to examine secondary school teachers understanding concerning the terms race and whiteness, and how perceptions of the terms interrelates with the democratic values and duties assigned to the teachers of the Swedish educational system. Semi-structured qualitative research interviews were used to gather data and critical discourse analysis to process it. Results show that the terms race and whiteness respectively are intertwined with historical context, adding dimensions of utility and shortcomings when used. These dimensions are taking into consideration among the interviewed teachers and reflected upon. The thesis concludes that although the terms have given functions to explaining racism and structural injustice, consideration has to be made in respect to the Swedish historical context when used.

"Kom och hugg oss": En studie om idrottsklubben AIK:s kommunikation i samband med det uppmärksammade hockeyderbyt den 22 december 20102011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In December 22, 2010, the hockey clubs AIK and Djurgården played against each other in front of an audience of more than 11 000 people in Ericsson Globe Arena, Stockholm. Although it was one of the biggest games of the year, afterwards no one was talking about the actual game on the ice. The reason; several times during the game, hooligans from both sides started big quarrels and the hockey dome felt more like a war scene than a place for a hockey game. From a branding point of view, and along with similar incidents from the past, the night in December did not create a good situation for AIK and their image.

Therefore, in this essay I want to investigate how AIK communicated through the crisis. I also want to evaluate whether their communication was good or bad from the perspective of different crisis communication theories.

    The essay’s research questions are:

    • How did media describe the crisis and AIK´s part in it?
    • What effect did AIK´s previous history of similar problem have on the ongoing crisis?
    • How did AIK communicate through the crisis?
    • How was AIK´s image affected by the crisis?
    • What did AIK do well/what could AIK have done better?

To be able to answer these questions, several news articles from the sports paper “Hockeyexpressen” has been analyzed as well as a text from AIK itself. The answers from the analysis has then been weighed against Hearit´s and Benoit´s theories on apologia as well as Coombs theory on the impact from previous crisis.

An important conclusion is that AIK protects its image during the crisis by using the strategy “shifting the blame”. AIK also redefines the picture of a true supporter by questioning the acts of some of their so called “fans”. AIK´s redefinition also serve to correct the news papers misleading use of different epithets on the same category of people. However, although their image stays more or less intact AIK fail to communicate the need of a broader responsibility from the society when it comes to the problems caused by sports related hooliganism.

Valretorik i text och bild: En studie i 2002 års svenska valaffischer2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Posters have been used in political communication for more than a century, and are still an important element in the election campaigns. However, few studies have been devoted to the way in which text and image work together in order to obtain the rhetorical goal of making voters vote for a specific party.

In this study, election posters in the 2002 general election in Sweden from all parties represented in the Swedish parliament are analysed. The context of this specific sample of political communication is described through a sociological approach inspired by Pierre Bourdieu, and through theories of political marketing. The model for analysis of the posters combine semiotics and rhetoric in order to present a model capable of analysing both text and image, and the way in which they are used in order to influence and persuade voters.

The conclusions are that Swedish parties favour textual messages and not visual elements, and that when visual elements are used, these are mostly portraits of candidates. So apparently, the predominance of visual elements in advertising does not show in election posters. Neither can one claim that personalisation is a predominant element, as the total percentage of posters depicting candidates is quite low. The tendency towards negative campaigning seen in earlier elections is not present in the 2002 posters, and the rhetoric is mostly epideictic and thus aimed at keeping already convinced voters rather than attracting new ones. This might indicate that the posters have lost their role as means of attracting new voters and have become more of an “internal” affair, telling the party’s voters, in a way which presupposes shared points of view, that the party is there to be voted for as always. The posters thus fulfil a symbolic function of binding together adherents rather than attracting newcomers.

"Ett förskräckligt missbruk av yttrandefriheten": en uppsats om underförståddhet i svensk nyhetsrapportering om Lexbase2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In January of 2014 a newly founded company held a press conference in central Stockholm. The purpose of the conference was to inform about Lexbase, the largest database on the Internet with legal information about the Swedish general public. The aim of this particular paper is to use news reports about Lexbase as material to identify the theses and their types presented in Swedish newspapers, and to examine the ideology constructed and presented by the theses in the said news reports. The questions asked in the paper are 1. What the distribution of different theses looks like and is there a type of thesis that more often invokes an implicit argumentation? 2. Which ideologies are evoked, reinforced or reproduced by the news reports? The results of the thesis show that the distribution of theses was not even, and that implicit theses with values linked to them were most common. The results also show that the implicit values and that the ideologies that could be identified had to do with moral righteousness and with freedom of speech. Therefore it can be said that the news reports about Lexbase had in general a specific type of thesis which were imbedded with mostly negative values, which were projected through ideologies about morals and the controversy of freedom of speech.
