    Abstract [en]

Co-morbidity in the form of mental health problems and an addiction has become increasingly noticeable and commonplace, which places higher demands than ever on a functioning collaboration or integration between psychiatric- and addiction care amongst open care. The purpose of this study, in addition to highlighting the perceived scope of co-morbidity, is to identify existing collaboration and improvement areas through qualitative interviews with professionals from two different organizations within the two care areas. In addition, the purpose is also to see how staff within the two activities relate to what it means for clients and patients to be diagnosed with two stigmatized diagnoses. The theoretical frame of reference this study uses is the theory of collaboration and Goffman's theory of stigma, as well as previous research that concerns collaboration and co-morbidity. The data consists of four semi-structured interviews with professionals in the two care areas in a selected municipality. The result shows that all respondents perceive co-morbidity as widespread and extensive, and that the collaboration is appreciated and desirable - but requires both the motivation and the will of the staff to function effectively. Furthermore, the results show that it is primarily in addiction care to work actively and explicitly to de-stigmatize the individual and liberate it from shame and guilt, even if the actor within psychiatric care also considers itself to be relatively de-stigmatized.

Institutionalising gender equality in disaster risk reduction: DRR challenges and impacts on women and men, girls and boys in the context of a changing climate2013Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

While MSB has many years of experience of implementing environmental and gender perspectives in its humanitarian work; disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation present a different set of opportunities and challenges. Thesefurther emphasise the inclusion of a social change component that overlaps somewhat with more conventional development work. MSB commissioned the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) to prepare this report, noting that women and men (as well as girls and boys) are affected differently by: i) the impacts of climate change, ii) efforts related to climate change adaptation (CCA), and iii) disaster risk reduction (DRR).

Colorism bland latina-svenskar: En kvalitativ studie om inom-grupps diskriminering inom den latinamerikanska diasporan i Sverige2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Arbetsdelningens återkomst i kommunala välfärdsorganisationer2019In: Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv, ISSN 1400-9692, Vol. 5, no 3-4, p. 67-88Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis brings fresh light on the types of problems that contemporary democracies might face when interacting with private interests. More specifically, the study examines the separation between the state and private interests, based on the assumption that this separation is a precondition for maintaining democracy and legitimate governance. It is thereby a contribution towards understanding the social forces that allow private interests to penetrate the public realm, as well as the forces that protect the state from such penetration. Under which circumstances do private interests access state apparatus in ways that contradicts its universalistic principles? How does the state consider challenges against its legitimacy and how are such threats dealt with? These questions are answered by means of two case studies. The first concerns the interaction between a number of state authorities that receive sponsoring from business enterprises. The second concerns interaction - partially afflicted by corruption - between the state monopoly for selling alcoholic beverages (‘Systembolaget’) in Sweden and its private suppliers.

Applying theories on organizational boundaries, exchange, trust, networks as well as legitimacy to these cases, the study demonstrates how state reforms, inspired by the logic of markets, has introduced new ways for private interest to access state affairs. In the case of ‘Systembolaget’, this is particularly evident. The possibility of access, the study argues, is a consequence of reshaping the internal boundaries of the state, broadening informal relations as well as extended scope of action for state employees. This replaced social differentiation as a mechanism of separation by the personal integrity of state employees. Interestingly, this finding should be considered in relation to how the state has attempted to sharpen its organizational boundaries through a strengthening of regulation and the businesslike relations of exchange.

Arbetsdelning i praktiken: Satsning på nya avlastande tjänster i Skövde kommun2017Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

By using Bourdieu's theory on capitals, the essay examines whether, and if so, in what ways, upward class mobility can affect one’s lifestyle. To examine this, I work with qualitative semi-structured interviews. Five upwardly mobile men and women were interviewed about their experience of being upwardly mobile. The interviews covered themes such as being born into a working-class family and being upwardly mobile, the perception of the middle class and the working class, and how they live today in the new class belonging. Previous researches used are three dissertation studies by the sociologists Mats Trondman, Lena Sohl and Ulla-Britt Wennerström. My result shows that life in a small extent has been affected by the class mobility and that the upwardly class mobile often became limit to be who they are.

Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the football team Dalkurd act locally and transnationally through their identifications, relationships and activities with other actors with whom the footballsteam interacts. The study has also focused on the tensions that arise between the local Dalkurd and transnational Dalkurd. Theoretical starting points are based on the transnational perspective, which is important in order to understand how a football team like Dalkurd act through his activities, identifications and relationships. The second theoretical perspective is based on the social networks 'importance for the football clubs' culture and local identity, which is important for understanding the local identity based on Swedish club culture. The methodological approach of the study is based on case studies with qualitative focus. The empirical material consists of a large number of media texts in the form of existing interviews and reports published in newspapers, radio and television. Also materials from web-based websites, and other social media. The result shows that Dalkurd has, through his activities, social relations and belongings and also symbols created transnational identity, and the association has also created local identifications even that these are relatively limited. The study's results showed that the football team has created a triadic relationship in the form of "transnational social space" between a football association in the form of Dalkurd, the country of hostland Sweden and the home country Kurdistan.

Hårda dörrar: Om dörrvakters selektering av gäster på krogen2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine in depth and analyze how and on what basis selection of guests managed by doormen primarily in an exclusive bistro in Stockholm. Qualitative methods in the form of personal interviews with door staff and participant observations were made. Interviews with doormen who work at two other similar places have also been carried out in order to find the differences and similarities in the selection process. To connect the results in a scientific way, we have mainly used Pierre Bourdieu's theories of capital forms and the field, and Göran Ahrne and Apostolis Papakostas organization theories. Previous research related to the phenomenon of selection in one way or another, along with the overarching theories, are used to answer the questions and purpose of this study. The study has concluded that membership, social networks, appearance and material assets are critical to be included in bistros that happens to have implicit rules and criteria. It has been found that these mechanisms can be translated in to sociological terms as social capital, cultural capital and doxa (norms). It would also show that the doormen in this study consider the individual’s class membership to be a more important attribute rather than ethnicity in the selection process.

"Och gamla som lever som om vi vore unga": En studie om äldre utlandsföddas upplevelse av ålderdomen2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to research in an explorative way how senior citizens who were born in other countries experience their ageing in Sweden.  The study's empirical material consisted of qualitative interviews in the form of a focus group with six respondents between the age of 60 and 84 years old and one individual interview with a respondent who was 89 years. All respondents were women. The study's theoretical frame of reference consists, among other things, of Blumer's three assumptions about the basis of symbolic interactionism and Berg's theoretical understanding of the importance of language for the development of self, and of Bauman's theory of individualized society. Another is Beck's theory about the individual himself that creates the conditions for their own life path. Berg's character traits for identity creation have been used as a theoretical tool for the study's analysis. The results of this study show that the elderly born in other countries are a vulnerable group due to a lack of Swedish language. The results also show that by adopting certain parts of the Swedish individualized society and retaining its original culture such as meeting like-minded and Hispanic speakers, the elderly have adapted to getting the best out of Sweden and their native culture.

Att leva med två kulturer: En kvalitativ studie om identitetskonstruktionen bland ungdomar som ingår i två kulturella världar2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today´s swedish society consists of an ethnic and cultural variety which can also lead to a lot of challenges surrounding social integration. These challenges can express themselves in various of ways, but often resulting in an inclusion or exclusion of ethnic minorities. The immigration politics around year 1979 was to a great extent distinguished by equality, freedom and cooperation which enabled immigrants the right to keep their cultural identity and language. The children to the immigrants grow up in two cultures- their original culture and the swedish culture. The aim with this study is to investigate the different social roles immigrant youths construct in relation to the categories “swede” and “immigrant”, as well as in relation to the different cultural environments in which they are included. Theories like segregation, discrimination and Goffman´s dramaturgical role theory are used in this paper together with previous research about “third cultural individuals” and youths living in two different cultural worlds. We used a thematic analysis of the gathered empirical data consisting of four interviews. The result indicate that youths with at least two foreign born parents identify themselves both as “swedes” and as “immigrants”. They also identify themselves both as “swedes” and as an albanian, kurd, syrian respective a montenegrin. The result that emerged is that they felt like they need to play a role in order to be accepted in environments where they are among swedes and at work. They feel like they have to talk and behave like a “swede”.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine how social workers and psychologists work with adolescents who have autism spectrum disorders and suffer from mental illness. This includes examining what working methods social workers and psychologists work with and partly understanding what they consider to be the reason why adolescents with autism spectrum disorders experience anxiety and depression. The study's empirical material was collected through three semi-structured interviews with social workers and psychologists, then analyzed with previous research and theoretical perspectives and literature. A social worker and two psychologists, one of whom is from child and adolescent psychiatry and the other two are from habilitation. The study's theoretical frame of reference consists of three interconnected theories that social workers and psychologists can work with. The first is theory of mind, the second is central coherence and the third is executive functions. The result shows that social workers and psychologists identify information about adolescents with autism spectrum disorders who suffer from mental illness. It also emerges that BUP works with the treatment and medication of mental illness while the habilitation works with autism spectrum disorders and adolescents' behavioral problems by providing support efforts. In summary, the study's findings show that autism spectrum disorders are strongly related to mental illness. The study can conclude that the result has a good connection to previous research and theoretical perspectives.

Kvinnors tillgång till det offentliga rummet: En kvalitativ studie om kvinnors tillgång till det offentliga rummet i särskilt utsatta förorter inom Järvaområdet i Stockholms län2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to study women's access to public space in particularly vulnerable suburbs within the area of Järva in Stockholm County. This study is based on a qualitative research method and has its foundation in semistructured interviews with ten women, telling about their experiences of living in particularly vulnerable suburbs within the area of Järva in Stockholm County. The results and analysis of the study are based on some theoretical starting points and chosen themes: The Female Role and Patriarchate, Power and Freedom and Repression and Symbolic Violence.

The result has shown that what affects women's access to public space in particularly vulnerable suburbs in the area of Järva in Stockholm County is the limited power and freedom of women and the prevailing patriarchate system, in the form of a patriarchal society. The results show that men, through different methods such as through repression and symbolic violence, master, exploit and repress women in public space in particularly vulnerable suburbs. This happens through direct actions and through indirect actions, through various forms of oppression and symbolic violence. Women are not treated in the same way as men in public space, and can be interpreted as men not seeing women as important as men or that men as a group consider themselves to be superior women as a group. The results also show that women are restricted from acting for free will because of the current picture of "the female role" and because women, according to men, may not deviate from the norm.

Overall, the study shows that women have limited access to public space in these particularly vulnerable suburbs in the area of Järva in Stockholm County. The outcome of the study should be considered as a major problem for society, because women are involuntarily assigned a subordinate position to men who make up the norm, which is not fair.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine whether and if so, what the reasons behind the decisions on immediate custody under the Care of Young Persons Act (CYPA), differs by gender. The purpose of this study is also to examine the similarities and differences in young people's life backgrounds, which resulted in the decision on immediate care order under § 6 CYPA. We intend to examinate this using the following questions: 1) What behaviors and events leads to the decision on immediate custody of the young? How can these be understood from a gender perspective? 2) How are the similarities and differences in boys' and girls' behavior and problems described and evaluated in the decision regarding § 6 CYPA? The method used belongs to the hermeneutic tradition and is a text analysis formulated by Lennart Hellspong and Per Ledin. The theories we have used is partly based on gender theory by Judith Butler which is complemented by the theory concepts norms and deviant behavior. The result shows that there are both similarities and differences in decisions concerning girls and boys. The differences are that depending on gender the young are beeing taken in to immediate custody because of different behaviors, where the boys especially have problems like crime and abuse, while the girls' problems rather are focusing on the destructiveness and the environment they find themselves in. Furthermore, we also found different formulations based on gender. The boys' behavior is more explicitly described, and the girls' decisions are perceived more vague and implicit.

    Abstract [en]

For a long period of time Sweden has been an OECD-country with one of the highest quantity of obstetric injuries. Childbirth has mainly been a sphere for women historically. Medical science however took an increasingly significant role during the 19th century and the profession mainly contained men. The pregnant woman became a pathological body. The consequence has led to women giving birth in lithotomy position and obstetric trauma is standard. The aim of this study has been, through Foucaults theory of bio power, analyse how a Swedish, social and medical normalization of obstetric injuries can be understood as a result of medicalization of the female sexuality and reproductivity. With a constructivist approach, the subjective experiences of their obstetric injuries has been analysed via structured interviews with women. The result shows a public impact in questions regarding female reproductivity and sexuality from the institute administrators. Emotional states of shame, guilt, pity and diminishing occur by the encounter with the institutes. Societies maintain the reality for women and mediate it discursively, since women who claim their bodies as their own are abnormal. Psychosocial support lacks in the care chain.

Multi-faced Social Transformations: Challenges and Studies2015Conference proceedings (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Multi-faced Social Transformations: Challenges and Studies brings together the proceedings of the 7th Slovenian Social Science Conference, “The Challenges of Social Transformations”, held in September 2014. It was organized by the School of Advanced Social Studies (SASS), the Slovenian National Committee of the Management of Social Transformations programme (MOST), and the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO. The multidisciplinary contributions presented here analyse various aspects of the economic, social, and cultural transformations that accompany the contemporary globalized world. The book consists of four sections dealing with particular areas of transformations. These include a range of political, economic and cultural dimensions that are observed from the macro-level, in social systems and structural changes, to the micro-level, in aspects of individuals’ lives. The book will be of interest for academics in the field of social sciences, as well as for civil society activists and policy makers. The frames of the transformations are not limited to the European space, and provide a more global perspective.

Avsaknadens erfarenheter: En studie om barnfamiljers upplevelser av ekonomisk utsatthet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine which mechanisms affect young adults' trust in authorities, with a focus on capital composition, and specifically cultural capital (education). Through this focus on capital, the study examines the underlying factors that affect what requirements that young adults feel that they can demand of/put on authorities. The data material has been collected through six interviews with young adults aged 20–30 who are, or during the past year have been, registered at the Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen) in Stockholm, Sweden. The reference framework that formed the basis for the analysis consists of Pierre Bourdieu's capital theory and the concept of habitus, in addition to Max Weber's theories on status and accumulation of opportunities.

The results of the study shows that capital composition correlates with trust level, but that the level of trust also relates to which extent an authority meets the expectations that exist around their services. Moreover, the results show that the level of trust correlates with the level of risk the young adult must take to trust authority.

Protest for a future II: Composition, mobilization and motives of the participants in Fridays For Future climate protests on 20-27 September, 2019, in 19 cities around the world2020Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In September 2019, the third Global Climate Strike organized by the Fridays For Future (FFF) protest campaign mobilized 6000 protest events in 185 countries and brought 7.6 million participants out onto the streets. This report analyses survey data about participants from 19 cities around the world and compares it to data from an international survey conducted in 13 European cities in March 2019. Both surveys collected data following the well-established “Caught in the Act of Protest” survey methodology in order to generate representative samples.  What makes FFF new and particularly interesting is the involvement of schoolchildren and students as initiators, organizers and participants in climate activism on a large scale. The September mobilizations differed from the March events in the explicit call for adults to join the movement. Although older age cohorts were more strongly represented in September, young people continued to make up a substantial portion of the protestors – almost one third of demonstrators were aged 19 or under. Additionally, there was a high proportion of female FFF protestors. In both surveys nearly 60% of participants identified as female – with the largest share among the youngest demonstrators. Overwhelming majorities of adult participants were well educated and had a university degree. Moreover, a large proportion of young people participating in the September strikes had parents who had studied at university level.  Despite the young age of the participants, interpersonal mobilization was the predominant method of recruitment to the strikes, particularly among friends and schoolmates. However, the growth in the size and popularity of the movement also includes a growing share of people who participate alone. Around a quarter of adults fit this category, as well as an initially small but growing number of young people. When expressing their emotions concerning climate change and global warming, the majority of protesters felt worried, frustrated and angered, as well as anxious about the future, although they did not often express a feeling of hopelessness. Therefore, despite a general tendency of decreasing hopefulness that important environmental issues can be addressed through policies, FFF participants show that their action is driven by feelings, awareness of the issues and a willingness to engage in finding solutions. In answer to a series of questions concerning solutions to environmental problems, respondents were divided over whether modern science could be relied on to solve environmental problems. Agreement varied between cities and age-groups on the degree to which they thought stopping climate change could be accomplished through voluntary individual lifestyle changes. However, there was more unity in skepticism towards relying on companies and the market to solve these problems.  In conclusion, surveys of the strikes in March and September indicate important elements of continuity, as well as a small degree of change. Female participants and people with higher education predominate, interpersonal mobilization – particularly among friends – remains a central factor in recruiting support, and protesters are mostly driven by feelings of frustration, anger and anxiety. However, the age of protestors is becoming more diverse, protesters’ hopefulness seems to be in decline, and the “Greta effect” is becoming less influential. The report findings suggest that the movement is becoming more established although its emotional basis for mobilization may be changing.

Det talas om utbrändhet: vilken roll spelar maktstrukturen2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we investigate whether power structures in organizations have an influence in the process that leads to burnout. We analyze if these power structures affect the individual’s health condition toward burnout in a way that leads to disability and subsequent absence from work. In the study, six persons who all have been unable to work due to burnout have been studied through qualitative, semi-structured interviews. The material have been coded with three different themes; leadership and hierarchy, responsibility and delegation of responsibility and performance and loyalty. These themes have been analyzed with Walter Korpi’s (1985) theory of power and power resources and Johan Asplund’s (2004) theory of social responsivity. Both theories may be associated with power structures in organizations. The result shows that organizational power structures do affect the process towards burnout in such a way that the ability of the individual to activate power resources to influence its situation is diminished and that the individual eventually loses his/her ability altogether. Further, we reached the conclusion that one of the basic factors that lead to burnout is the lack of power resources in the individual’s work situation.

Stress Sensitivity and Psychotic Experiences in 39 Low- and Middle-Income Countries2016In: Schizophrenia Bulletin, ISSN 0586-7614, E-ISSN 1745-1701, Vol. 42, no 6, p. 1353-1362Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Stress has a central role in most theories of psychosis etiology, but the relation between stress and psychosis has rarely been examined in large population-level data sets, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. We used data from 39 countries in the World Health Survey (n = 176 934) to test the hypothesis that stress sensitivity would be associated with psychotic experiences, using logistic regression analyses. Respondents in low-income countries reported higher stress sensitivity (P < .001) and prevalence of psychotic experiences (P < .001), compared to individuals in middle-income countries. Greater stress sensitivity was associated with increased odds for psychotic experiences, even when adjusted for co-occurring anxiety and depressive symptoms: adjusted odds ratio (95% CI) = 1.17 (1.15-1.19) per unit increase in stress sensitivity (range 2-10). This association was consistent and significant across nearly every country studied, and translated into a difference in psychotic experience prevalence ranging from 6.4% among those with the lowest levels of stress sensitivity up to 22.2% among those with the highest levels. These findings highlight the generalizability of the association between psychosis and stress sensitivity in the largest and most globally representative community-level sample to date, and support the targeting of stress sensitivity as a potential component of individual- and population-level interventions for psychosis.

Drug control policies in Russia: unhealthy, deviant, and criminal2016In: Baltic Worlds, ISSN 2000-2955, Vol. IX, no 4, p. 12-22Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines the policies on drug control and regulation in Russia. We demonstrate that, although agencies involved in drug con-trol and regulation are important for the reproduction of differentiated practices of drug use, they formulate a rather homogeneous image of a drug user as an unhealthy deviant and criminal, and an unequivocal threat to society. At the same time, in the process of policy realization, the most vulnerable groups of users become the main target of public intervention. As a result, stigmatization and violence against these groups becomes institutionalized and legitimized. Moreover, drug control and regulation resonate with a broader range of public policies and spill over into parts of society not associated with illicit drug use.

    Abstract [en]

Bullying is a serious social problem that has increased among Swedish adolescents. Bullying victimization has a negative impact on adolescents life satisfaction and it’s therefore important to gain knowledge about factors that can have a positive impact on this relationship. The aim of this study was to investigate to what extent socio-emotional support from family, teachers and friends have a positive impact on experienced life satisfaction among adolescents who are victims of bullying in Sweden. A logistic regression analysis was used based on data from “Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) 2013/14” where 365 adolescents who are victims of bullying were analyzed. The result showed that socio-emotional support from family had a positive impact on the experienced life satisfaction among Swedish adolescents who are victims of bullying. The socio-emotional support from teachers and friends did not have a significant impact. These findings highlight how family is a resource that helps adolescents who are victims of bullying to cope with the negative effects that bullying has on life satisfaction. The present study therefore contributes knowledge on how socio-emotional support from the family could be used as a concrete strategy in the school social work to support adolescents who are victims of bullying.

Den överhängande risken att utsättas för våld i prostitution finns - oavsett verksamhetsområde: En jämförande kvalitativ studie om prostituerade kvinnors utsatthet att erfara våld av sexköpare2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to provide the reader with an insight into the violence that accompanies prostitution and that the imminent risk of violence is present regardless of whether the woman is active in “off-street” or “on-street” prostitution. The purpose has been to carry out a comparative study of the vulnerability to violence by sex buyers that women in “off-street” and “on-street” prostitution experience. In addition, a qualitative content analysis of Swedish biographies on prostitution was used to study how women in prostitution described their meetings with sex buyers. The main results are that there are differences in the violence that women experience from sex buyers and how they describe their experiences. These differences depended on whether the women were active in “off-street” or “on-street” prostitution. Based on the biographies, it was found that the women in “off-street” had a sexual self-harm, that a normalization process of the experienced violence could be distinguished and that women active “on-street” have an increased risk of being victimized according to the lifestyle theory. The conclusions of this study are that the theoretical aspects have a significant role in what kind of violence women in prostitution experience from sex buyers.

Energilandskap i förändring: Inramningar av kontroversiella lokaliseringar på norra Gotland2018Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

New energy sources emerge and others are phased out. At the same time global energy demand remains. The siting of the physical structures that generate and distribute energy has an impact in the physical environment as well as in the social landscape before, during and after completion of such projects. It is relevant to investigate how the siting of new energy infrastructures is received. The overall aim of this PhD thesis in sociology is to contribute to an increased understanding of local handling of global energy dilemmas.

In the thesis, controversial energy infrastructural siting is analysed. More specifically, how two such cases are understood and interpreted by different actors. The analysis is carried out through a theoretical framework based on frame analysis and social practice-theory. The study offers a sociologically based understanding of place and shows the importance of this understanding for attitudes towards the siting of energy infrastructures.

The study includes two empirical cases from north-eastern Gotland, Sweden: The logistical work around the construction of a large-scale natural gas pipeline, and a planned, but never realized, siting of a wind power facility. The study was carried out through interviews, observations and text analysis.

How do different actors combine and weigh different aspects against each other in their constructed frame? The results show that aspects beyond the local area are included in the frames and that they include relationships between different actors as well as change over time. The understanding is presented through an analysis of four aspects: place-related, transcending place, position and process. Together they capture the multi-dimensionality and complexity that characterize the siting of controversial facilities. The most successful framing strategy was “decoupling”, highlighting several different aspects, but keeping them separate.

One of the strengths of the study is the inclusion of both strategic framings and framings made by those who are not an active part of the formal process. This offers a complex picture going beyond the policy level and shows that there is no single understanding within the “local community”. The thesis thus contributes to an extended understanding of how controversial facility siting is framed.

    Abstract [sv]

Phasing out or phasing in: Framing the role of nuclear power in the Swedish energy transition2016In: Energy Research & Social Science, ISSN 2214-6296, E-ISSN 2214-6326, Vol. 13, p. 170-179Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines how members of the Swedish Parliament framed nuclear energy in the 2010 debate on the future of nuclear power in Sweden in order to understand how politicians construct and contextualize their views on the role of nuclear energy in energy transitions. Our findings suggest that four themes could be identified in the debate and that these were formative for politicians in framing nuclear energy. Even though all political actors anticipate an energy transition towards a more sustainable system, different paths to advancing in this process were brought up in the debate, both with and without prolongation of the nuclear energy program. Our analysis suggests that framings of nuclear energy are closely related to the political ideologies of the parties in the Parliament because the two framings of nuclear energy correspond with the division of the Swedish Parliament into two political blocs. However, views on nuclear energy are not inherent to political ideologies but are constructed. This article thus integrates the politics of nuclear energy within the research on energy transitions.

Modernity, media and the global system2000Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Conceptions of time and space lie at the heart of many prevalent discourses on modernity and globalization. These conceptions are variably based on ideas of modern media of communication having developed as part of technological and other transformations throughout the modern era. One major aim of this essay is to scrutinize some of the literature that claims to establish historical links between modernity, globalization and the media. For one thing, it is asserted here that globalization is not simply a logical outcome of modernity. Depending on the chosen historical perspective, the relationship might be the contrary one - global interdependencies appearing prior to both early and late modernity. There is also a criticism of the spatialization turn in social and cultural theory. It does not capture the subtle dialectics of time and

space as these dimensions are reconstituted by the media, not least on the global level. In this context the author considers the critiques of media imperialism and postjournalism and their relevance for a grounded analysis of power and difference in a postcolonial, postcommunist global system.

Stigmatisering och identitet: Hur sex ungdomar i Husby upplever sitt bostadsområde2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how youth identity formation can be influenced by a stigmatized neighborhood. Therefore, we investigated how young people experience the medial representation of the residential area, and how it may affect their identity formation. The method was based on a qualitative approach where six young people were interviewed from the suburb Husby near Stockholm.Theories that have been applied in our analysis were Goffman's stigma theory, Ristilammis suburb discourse and a theory of “us and “them”. With these applications, we were able to identify how a stigmatized residential maintains and constructs youth identity formation. In summary, the results indicated that our respondents in the suburb of Husby were aware of the stigmatized image of their suburban is described. However differenced theirs own perception of the area in comparison with the assigned. The young people were concerned about the negative reputation of their location (suburb), but we noticed that the affinity outweighs this negativity.

Time to play: the rationalization of leisure time2012In: Proceedings of the 2012 iConference, New York: Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), 2012, p. 145-151Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores how rationalization logic and rationalization processes influence digital gaming by looking at how players value and manage the time they spend on games. The study is framed in a discussion of leisure time, critical theories of computation and rationalization theory. Qualitative interview data is used in an inductive and phenomenology inspired approach. The results show two frames of understanding of gaming. First, games are perceived as media products and playing as a waste of time. Secondly, digital gaming is a hobby, a social activity highly valued within the framework of a rational time economy. We conclude that even though we are seeing a rationalization of leisure time in gaming, that rationalization process must be understood in the context of individualization within the new network society. This means that players are involved in a 'rational individualization' process where their management of leisure time and gaming activities are part of an ongoing identity project.

Att avlasta eller belasta?: En kvalitativ studie om användningen av utdrag ur belastningsregistret inom transport och logistik2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Over the last few decades there has been a statistical increase for the use of criminal background check. Organizations that operates in the business of transport and logistics have developed the control of criminal records before employment as a standardized recruitment tool. This, despite of the lack of constitutional support for the use of it. This study aims to study and problematizing the use of the criminal records. Furthermore, this study aims towards a deeper understanding of how organizations reasons and how the assessment is made if an individual has been previously convicted. The empirical material is gathered through qualitative interviews with representatives from different organizations working within the bransch. The results shows that despite the lack of constitutional support, all informants base their assessment in a similar way. Theoretically, this indicates that a moral structure has been developed around this issue. Through the study's theoretical framework, the study’s findings indicate that the criminal record is perceived to contribute to producing trust, reducing risks and increasing organizations security.
