The naked king: on the desire to replace philosophy with Conceptual art during the years 1966-1972 and the aesthetic response by Theodor W. Adorno, Umberto Eco and Jacques Rancière2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to investigate the reconfiguration and, to some extent, the total deconstruction of the aesthetic field, such as we have know it since Baumgarten, that is promoted by Conceptual art. It is our intention to show the philosophical importance and the theoretical implications of the questions raised by this artistic movement, which somehow instigated the tumultuous debate directed to overwhelm much of the art world from the late 1960's onward.

We believe that the very core of Conceptual art is philosophical and in this respect our programme is to investigate how Conceptual art not only challenges the viewer with traditional aesthetic concepts, but also with the very means used by philosophy to analyse art.

This essay aims therefore to be an analysis of the philosophy of Conceptual art, which we put in relation to the aesthetic investigations of three philosophers - TheodorWiesengrundAdorno, Umberto Eco and Jacques Rancière.

The ambition is to shed theoretical light on an artistic movement certainly scantly considered within the philosophical domain, while it indicates itself as the contingent successor to philosophy.

    Abstract [en]

This essay argues that the ethical theory of ”failure” Judith Butler is proposing in her later work, specifically in Giving an Account of Oneself, is based on an idea of the subject as ”ec-static” or outside of itself. The idea of the ecstatic subject is formulated already in Butlers dissertation on Hegel, later to be published as Subjects of Desire. This essay sets out to study how this formulation is first articulated in Subjects of Desire and then further developed to ground the ethical project of Giving an Account of Oneself. By these means, the aim is to explore what implications the subject conceived as ecstatic might have for Butlers ethics of "failure", particularly with regards to the notion of responsibility.

The first part explicates three aspects of the ecstatic figure as it unfolds in Butlers reading of Hegel in Subjects of Desire: the ecstacy of rethorics, desire and recognition. In an interplay between these aspects the quest for self-identity is revealed as being constantly thwarted by a principle of negativity. Instead, the ecstatic subject finds itself constituted by alterity and thereby also funda- mentally dependent on the recognition by others. Turning in the second part to Giving an Account of Oneself, this ecstatic moment is extended to involve the very conditions of recognition. As a result, and in tandem with a radicalized understanding of performativity and relationality, the ecsta- tic subject is rendered partially opaque to itself. This means that every effort to give an adequate account of oneself will necessarily ”fail”. However, according to Butler, what makes us ”fail” is also what binds us together. The third and final part of the essay discuss what this ethical theory of ”failure” means to the notion of responsibility and how it derives from the conception of the subject as ecstatic. Departing from Catherine Mills's and Hannah Stark's critical readings, Butler's ethical proposal to acknowledge this "failure" and to abide by the limits of self-knowledge is examined in relation to representation, difference and identity. In conclusion Butler's notion of ethical re- sponsibilty is found to linger on the risky line between an open avowing of our unknowingness and a demand to recognize what or who is left out from every act of knowing.

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the concept of meaning in Sein und Zeit. By identifying a paradox in the question constituting the outset of Heidegger’s ontology, i.e. the question of the meaning of Being, the need of a clarification of the concept of meaning unfolds. According to Heidegger, namely, we have been asking the question of Being without even knowing what we mean; we have forgotten to ask the question of the meaning of Being. At the same time, since the actual question of Being necessarily is a question of the meaning of Being, i.e. since we, as human beings and as the sole origin of the question of Being, necessarily mean something with the questions we ask, we have been asking exactly the question we have forgotten to ask. What then, I ask, is this element, that we have been asking for but forgotten to address? What is meaning? Asking this question on the basis of Sein und Zeit, I argue, is necessarily to explore the Being of meaning, since meaning is something found in the constitution of Dasein, the human being, and since the explication of Dasein evolving in Sein und Zeit concerns exactly its Being. After clarifying this question, the study proceeds in three chapters, the first concerning the basic structure of Dasein, the second the understanding, as the knowing of this structure, and the third the explication, in which we finally find the constitutive elements of meaning, i.e. it’s Being. In dialogue with secondary sources, I then aim to discuss the implication of this Being, epistemic as well as political and ethical. Subsequently, I ask what this Being implies for the paradox initially noted.

Skratt och glädje: Om skrattets och glädjens allvar utifrån Den Glada Vetenskapen av Friedrich Nietzche2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The present essay concerns the Levinasian understanding of responsibility in relation to the two spheres that Levinas introduces in his second major work Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence, namely the Saying and the Said. The essay investigates some of the different meanings that the concept responsibility takes on in regard to these two spheres, and thus also in regard to the separation between the ethical and the political that is apparent in the book. Is it possible to find a politically uttered responsibility in Levinas Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence?

The essay wants to emphasize the continuous transition between the ethical or the Saying and the political or the Said, and vice versa, with the purpose of showing how the two spheres may be conceived simultaneously. By posing the relationship between the two as a reciprocal rather than a oppositional one, the essay aims to suggest that an understanding of responsibility at once must be ethical and political. In order to show this, the essay analyses responsibility as communication, sensibility and exposure. Thereafter, it turns to Judith Butler's Giving an Account of Oneself to offer an ethical/political reading of responsibility as the subjectivity of the subject. Levinas' concepts of the Trace, the Third Party and the question of Justice is discussed, using Jacques Derrida's Adieu to Emmanuel Levinas, Bettina Bergo's Levinas Between the Ethical and the Political, and Howard Caygill's Levinas and the Political. The essay poses the question of how we are to discuss responsibility if its original, ethical meaning is undone at the very moment that we try to grasp it.  Therefore what Levinas calls the philosophical reduction of the Said is taken in consideration.

HR-partnerns spelrum i verksamheten: Om tillhörighet, omgivning och krav på mätbarhet2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Mot simulakrats värld: Representationskritik i Deleuzes tidsliga och ideala synteser2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines how Gilles Deleuze critically transforms the theory of thought from representation to production, by way of finding thought’s genetic conditions, in his synthesis of time and ideal synthesis in Différence et répétition. I focus on Deleuze’s critique of subject, time, and identity, and on how he tries to establish a purely positive synthesis capable of producing the absolutely new. Lastly, I discuss Deleuze’s own image of thought that rises from his critique, as simulacrum.

    Abstract [en]

All since Thomas Kuhn’s strongly influential The Structure of Scientific Revolutions the Philosophy of Science and –even more so –the Social Sciences have contained a greater amount of theories that could be described as more or less relativistic, meaning that the standards of justification or truth thereafter more often were said to be relative to language, culture, or biological makeup. One of the more elaborate ways of developing Thomas Kuhn’s theories in a more relativistic direction ismade by the philosopher Richard Rorty. Rorty, mainly a supporter of Thomas Kuhn, is also a philosopher who has been seen as a main exponent of a so called Postmodern philosophy.

My intention in this thesis is to evaluate whether Kuhn's and Rorty's theories of science and knowledge could be regarded as relativism, in respects of their view of incommensurability, rational argumentation, and of their position vis-á-vis the more conventional picture of scientific knowledge and truth. Both Rorty and Kuhn agree on the idea that there is no common measure for assessing the different scientific theories, since science is grounded within specific theories of the period, what is called the thesis of incommensurability. This idea rules out certain kinds of comparison of two theories in different paradigms and consequently rejects some traditional views of scientific development, such as the view that later science builds on the knowledge contained within earlier theories. Even though Rorty and Kuhn also do not agree with the view that later theories are closer approximations to the truth than earlier theories, Kuhn differs from Rorty in the –seemingly contradictory stated -view that later theories generally are better than earlier ones for solving problems (puzzles), and that science is guided by some extra-paradigmatical criteria.

While neither Rorty nor Kuhn are willing to describe themselves as relativists, this seems rather to be right in only one respect namely that they are not to be described as ontological relativists, even though Kuhn sometimes has made a few undeveloped statements in direction of ontological relativism. While Kuhn's (above mentioned) seemingly contradictory view -where he harbors both incommensurability and the possibility of distinguishing the progress of science –makes the verdict of epistemic relativism not totally solid, it is however clear that Rorty should be considered a clear epistemic relativist. For Rorty neither the concept of truth, nor those of objectivity and of reality, can be invoked to explain or legitimate our inferential practices and our standards of warrant. Rorty's arguments are instead rejecting science and scientific methodology to let us be constrained in our beliefs by the world. It is a matter to discuss whether Rorty's view of science, if it were to prevail, would mean that scientists no longer would be motivated to carry on as they are and if the status of Scientific knowledge would diminish in an unwanted way.

    Abstract [en]

Late modern cultural theory has since the 1960s tended to define culture in terms of signifying practice, making meaning and interpretation central concepts. However, a series of structuralist and poststructuralist waves have at the same time marginalised hermeneutics in cultural studies. The influential anti-hermeneutic challenges of Foucault, Kittler and Latour underline the necessity to abandon the romantic conceptions in much of classical hermeneutics. However, these critics tend to throw the baby out with the bathwater, and cannot ground late modern cultural theory. If taken fully seriously, the demand to abandon interpretation and replace meanings with some kind of materiality would evacuate cultural research or reduce it to plain physics. Instead, Paul Ricoeur’s critical textual hermeneutics offers a more useful polydimensional understanding of culture. This is a presentation of anti-hermeneutic challenges, discussing how they may be overcome by recharging key cultural concepts with energies deriving from taking these challenges seriously and letting them inspire a reconstitution of cultural theory from a post-anti-hermeneutic perspective.

Herakleitos logos: Om några tolkningar av filosofins grundbegrepp2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The philosopher Heraclitus has been renowned for a great amount of time. Despite that fact the remaining fragments of his work have just recently been assembled to the composed form they have today. Among these fragments there are a couple of terms that stands out amongst others; one of them is the term logos. The main focus of this thesis is devoted to the mystery and usage of the term logos, which comes into a great display in fragment number 50.

The ambition of the thesis is to evaluate and compare three interpreters’ readings of Heraclitus while having a close focus on his usage of the word logos in fragment 50. One of these interpreters, Martin Heidegger, may have the most radical reading of Heraclitus’ logos among the three. Because of his philosophical standpoint he interprets Heraclitus in a way which has never been done before. The other two do not have Heidegger’s phenomenological perspective, by which Heidegger broadens our understanding of Heraclitus fragments, which isn’t as the thesis will show unproblematic.

The other two interpreters G.S. Kirk and Charles H. Kahn both do a thorough reading and translation of all the fragments, whereas Heidegger is more selective in his reading of the fragments. Heidegger doesn’t have the same intention in his interpretation as Kirk or Kahn; therefore may he be said to be more selective in his reading of Heraclitus. While Kirk and Kahn depict a more naturalistic ethic tendency in Heraclitus, Heidegger illustrates an ontological tendency which speaks about being and its’ constitution and expression as such. At the end of the thesis there is an analytic part which compares and investigates the possible difficulties in comparing the three readings.

The thesis acknowledges the possibility of impossibility in ever understanding the extent of Heraclitus thoughts around logos; the three interpreters hopefully show the scope of understanding Heraclitus’ thoughts around this term.

    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to critically discuss John Rawls’ theory of “Justice as Fairness” with prime focus on Rawls’ view of the family and its role in a politically just society. Feminist critics, Susan Moller Okin and others, have suggested that Rawls’ theory fails to address issues of gender structured inequalities in society and within families. Starting from the question of what potential Rawls’ theory has as philosophical framework for just family conditions and family policy, and with support from Okin’s criticism and the critical comments presented by Charles W. Mills, concerning Rawls’ omission of issues of racial oppression, I argue that there are two particularly significant problems with Rawls’ theory when applied as basis for family policy aimed at promoting equal rights and opportunities for all individuals, men and women: (1) That Rawls fails with his intention, to free the conditions that the theory is derived from, from impact of actual political and social structures and (2) that Rawls fails to define the balance between the family’s (in this context) double roles; as an autonomous association and as a part of the society’s basic (political) structure. I also discuss an alternative interpretation of Rawls’ theory, which suggests that the theory benefits from a built-in flexibility in dealing with the private and public spheres of life and thereby manages both to promote diversity and autonomy and to oppose patriarchal hierarchies.

Bild och begrepp: Heideggers läsning av Kant ur ett fenomenologiskt perspektiv2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores some key aspects of early Heidegger’s interpretations of Kant from a phenomenological perspective. In general terms, it analyzes Heidegger’s claim that Kant’s faculties share a common root in the transcendental imagination, as a critical development of motives found in Husserl’s phenomenology.

More precisely, the thesis argues that the motive for deriving Kant’s first faculty, intuition, from the synthesis of imagination can be understood as an attempt to account for the receptivity of a finite subject, without yielding to a causal description of sensibility. Phenomenology shares this problem with Kant’s critical philosophy. Concerning the claim that the second faculty, understanding, originates from the transcendental imagination, Heidegger connects it to his ambition of liberating Kant from a Cartesian heritage, where understanding is conceived as an independent faculty, disconnected from time and sensibility. The thesis explores this motive in relation to Husserl’s claim that the independent use of understanding in the forming of judgments and concepts –is derived from its function in the service of intuition. The belonging together of intuition and understanding is a core aspect of phenomenology, present from its breakthrough in Husserl’s Logical Investigations to his last writings in The Crisis of the European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology. A general ambition of the thesis is, through a reading of Heidegger’s interpretations of Kant, to shed some light on this fact, and hopefully thereby – at least to some extent – to deepen our understanding of the phenomenological project as such.

Although the thesis’ primary concern is not polemical, on some occasions it criticizes other interpreters of Heidegger’s relation to Kant for neglecting or wholly rejecting the phenomenological point of departure of Heidegger’s interpretations.

Pluralitet enligt Hannah Arendt: En undersökning av pluralitetsbegreppet i Arendts verk Människans villkor2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This work reconstructs Hannah Arendt’s own analyses of the different human activities: work, labour and action in her influential work The Human Condition. Using Arendt’s concept of plurality, not only as mere means for political and/or human diversity, but as a paradigm, the first part further examines to what extent plurality unfolds through the particular activities. Whilst Arendt’s famous conception about ”the rise of the social” is certainly hard to ignore, it is here argued that, there are different ways to adress this notion.

The second part is a comparative analysis with Arendt and Sophie Loidolts book Phenomenology of Plurality: Hannah Arendt on Political Intersubjectivity. In that regard this essay also seeks to perceive plurality not only as a paradigm, but through a phenomenological lens, something Loidolt states has been overlooked prior. Loidolts essential argument here is that Arendt uses a phenomenological vocabulary, and its mainly the thematic concepts which she uses thats been analysed and defined - they don’t leave any proper phenomenological traces. However, since Arendt uses a phenomenological vocabulary, operative concepts are also present in her political thought, which clearly have a phenomenological background. According to Loidolt, they are usually left undefined and un-analysed. The second part undertakes such an assignment, that is, applying the phenomenological tools containing in the The Human Condition. What this means is that by analysing and defining the operative concepts, they become tools to understand the thematic concepts.

But, what happens with Arendt’s political virtue when exercising the phenomenological tools presented by Loidolt? In this second part, I argue that there is a risk we are drifting away from the political in Arendt’s thought when focusing too much on her evident phenomenological background.

Att dela helhetssyn: en vetenskaplig essä på jakt efter ett svårfångat begrepp i sjukvården2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Utmaningen kallas NPM.

    Abstract [en]

The present paper critically examines the epistemic status of first-person accounts and first-person methods in Francisco Varela’s research program neurophenomenology, which integrates a phenomenological perspective in cognitive science. The paper also questions Varela’s description of neurophenomenology as an ontological recategorization of nature and a solution to the hard problem of consciousness.

    Abstract [en]

Standard definitions of causal closure focus on where the causes in question are. In this paper, the focus is changed to where they are not. Causal closure is linked to the principle that no cause of another universe causes an event in a particular universe. This view permits the one universe to be affected by the other via an interface. An interface between universes can be seen as a domain that violates the suggested account of causal closure, suggesting a view in which universes are causally closed whereas interfaces are not. On this basis, universes are not affected by other universes directly but rather indirectly. © 2017 The Author(s)

Coherentism as a foundation for ethical dialog and evaluation in school: value communication, assessment and mediation2011Inngår i: Educating for complex thinking through philosophical inquiry: Models, advances, and proposals for the new millennium : Proceedings of the 14th ICPIC Conference. / [ed] Marina Santi, Stefano Oliverio, Padova: Liguori , 2011, s. 13 s.-Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we are mainly concerned with coherentism as an approach to ethical dialog in school. We have two different but connected aims with the paper. The first aim is to say something about general philosophical questions relating to coherentism as a theory in metaethics, and especially in relation to value education; the second aim is to explore some possible implications of coherentism as a method in studying the enterprise of discussing ethical issues and questions with children as well as the study of the actual ethical discussion in school. Furthermore, we evaluate the connection between a coherentistic approach to justification and the methodological parts of a Philosophy with Children, or Community of Inquiry, approach to ethics in school. Related to this, we scrutinize what implications this has for evaluating ethical learning within Philosophy with Children, or Community of Inquiry, as well as implications for evaluation of the Philosophy with Children, or Community of Inquiry, approaches as methods for dealing with ethical matters in school.

Iterabilitet, upprepning och permanens: En kritisk analys av debatten mellan Derrida och Searle2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The essay seeks to clarify some of the decisive but often obscured issues in the famous debate between Jacques Derrida and Jonn F. Searle. The debate commenced in 1977 with the publication in Glyph of Derrida’s lecture Signature Event Context from -71, followed by Searle’s Reiterating the Differences. A Reply to Derrida and subsequently Derrida’s reply Limited Inc a b c … which encouraged Searle to renew his criticism. I situate the debate within a philosophical context where questions of the aim of philosophy and the nature of philosophical writing cannot be excluded from the specific topics that are being discussed. Starting from Derrida’s controversial reading of Austin, where a few key points of criticism are placed under scrutiny, I proceed to problems of writing and communication where special attention is paid to the concept of iterability and Searle’s remark that this has been confounded with permanence in Derrida’s exposition. The concept of ”writing” is examined as a crux in the understanding of the two philosophers. And iterability is then found to be derieved from the theorization of absence in relation to that very concept. Iterability designates an essential possibility of absence and implies the possibility of every mark to be grafted onto new contexts of significance. Thus it draws the consequences of a general repeatability, within which difference is underscored as the inevitable outcome. The last section of the essay relates to the phenomenological project of investigating the genesis of idealization and traces the emergence of iterability in Derrida’s further writings on Husserl, where repetition can be perceived of as constitutive for ideality and thus for identity. Bearing on this observation, the type/token-distinction, proposed by Searle to undo the problem of iterability, is subjected to further inquiry and linked to the process of idealization, within which iterability is revealed to have a temporal relevance that also affects the notion of permanence. The claim is then made that iterability should be understood as a fundamentally ambiguous phenomenon through its dual relation to identity and difference. Its utility is found to be hinged upon the status of the possible. Finally, the question of iterability as concept is posed, which entails its interdependence upon notions of dissemination and différance.

Viljan att lyssna och förstå: Potters närmande till självskada i möte med Foucault, Derrida och Gadamer2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study is an attempt to develop the discussion about self-injury with the aid of philosophical discussions about understanding. I will present a reading of the discussion between Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida about reason and madness, and also an interpretation of the Derrida and Hans-Georg Gadamer encounter. These readings focus on the concept of understanding, on the possibility to understand the other and on the possibility to reach out from reason toward the irrational. The project to formulate an ethical approach to self-injury by Nancy Nyquist Potter is then used to bring the question about understanding to life. I conclude that the project of Potter, formulated as “uptake”, is weakened by the fact that she fails to recognize the underlying philosophical problems in stating the possibility to understand the meaning of something that until today has been considered meaningless.

Det estetiska: en närläsning av Martin Heideggers "On the way to Language"2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

What is the”self” and to become “one-self”? To resolve this questions possibility I´ve been using the philosopher Søren Kierkegaard metaphysic paradoxes. This essay about the “self” shows the reader the difference between describing a transcendent and immanent phenomenon and if it´s possible to become or to not become ourselves. The process is a key of the “self” which Kierkegaard explains the “self” in and for it-self. This transcendental phenomenon correlates between the dialectical relation it is constituted with and its own reflection, a “self” that becomes. If the “self” was not preceded as a process it would be an imminent “self” like it is described in positivistic methods. The transcendent “self” is the one which could only be captured in the moment and is a relation between two contradictories of three kinds. These three are finiteness and infinites, temporality and eternal, body and soul.

The positivistic method is the psychology and theological one. From this method the “self” is account from a view which sees the “self” as a healthy one. This positivistic “self” can only proceed towards sickness. The opposite option, to describe the “self” as a sick one that is proceeding towards health, is a negativistic method. This investigation shows the difference describing a phenomenon as the “self” and to become ourselves, through philosophy and natural science like psychology or theology. To describe the “self” through philosophy is to describe the “self” from and in correlation to its sickness. In this essay to show the differences I´ve described the Kierkegaard’s “self” both in a positivistic and in a negativistic method.

Still one can ask if the “self” and the process of becoming ourselves is even a possible. What choices do we have as human beings to choose, either to become or not to become ourselves? In every choice the sickness is present, and in every presence the quilt is a reality. The choice of become ourselves and the choice to not become ourselves includes the possibilities of freedom but also a necessarily. To become ourselves are both possible as necessary. The “self” is a great paradox idea of Kierkegaard, which I have explored.

In this investigation I used Kierkegaard´s Fear and Trembling (1844) and Sickness Unto Death (1881). I also used articles by James Collins to show the “self” in a positivistic method and the philosopher Michael Theunissens article about the negativistic method.

Body, Geography, Exteriority: Race and spatiality in the writings of Denise Ferreira da Silva2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation investigates the concept of race and spatiality, primarily through the writings ofDenise Ferreira da Silva. In Ferreira da Silva’s book Toward a Global Idea of Race, she traces howphilosophical and scientific discourse has instituted both ”transparent subjectivity,” associated withself-determination, temporality and interiority, and ”affectable subjectivity,” associated with outerdeterminationand spatiality. Transparent subjectivity becomes racially coded as white, whileaffectability is located in the bodies of those who are not white and thus seen as coming from”elsewhere.” In this dissertation, I explore Ferreira da Silva’s use of spatiality as a mode ofunderstanding race through the concepts of the body, geography, and exclusion or exteriority fromuniversality and humanity. I place her work in the context of the writings of other theorists of theseconcepts, notably Frantz Fanon, Linda Martín Alcoff, Sylvia Wynter, and Frank Wilderson.Through these comparisons, I try to outline the conceptual and political stakes of Ferreira da Silva’streatment of these issues.

    Abstract [en]

Happiness is often considered our ultimate goal in life. This essay explores the political im- plications of this view, through the critique of happiness found in the works of Simone de Beauvoir and Sara Ahmed. Ahmed and Beauvoir consider happiness to be harmful as a po- litical goal, since it tends to diminish dimensions of power and conflict in favor of harmony, and is not compatible with a political philosophy based on freedom or liberation. Happiness is often confused with the ethical Good, but this essay argues that happiness does not ne- cessarily entail good things. Indeed, happiness can be used to justify oppression and unjust political systems.

    Abstract [en]

The present essay aims to understand the work of art as place on the basis of Martin Heidegger’s conception of work in Der Ursprung des Kunstwerkes from 1935. That is, a place that cannot be understood in accordance with the physical-technological space, but which cannot either be thought of as mere temporal spacing. This is accomplished by reading Der Ursprung des Kunstwerkes through the shorter essay Die Kunst und der Raum from 1969. Despite the time difference, Die Kunst und der Raum opens up Der Ursprung des Kunstwerkes in such a way that the work cannot be understood as if it were only a temporal event – as the cause initiating a temporal process or succession of truth. Instead, the work has to be considered on the basis of Heidegger’s conception of time-space; not merely in a matter of the space or spacing of time, but out of and from within the definition of place as clearing out and dwelling – neither forfeiting time nor space. The fact that Heidegger though the dimension of place as dwelling already when formulating the concept of ”work” in 1935 hence becomes apparent. This place – that is, spacing as initiating and initiating as spacing – thus must be regarded as a twofold inverse, as disruption and displacement. In other words, the work must be thought of as a third inverse: as abyssal ground(-ing) [Abgrundung] of time-space.

A Phenomenology of Transcendence : Edith Stein and the Lack of Authentic Otherness in Martin Heidegger’s Being and Time2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to shed light upon the philosophical dignity of Edith Stein’s critique of the early Heideggerian conception of sociality in her text ”Martin Heideggers Existenzphilosophie”, from 1936. I will argue that Stein’s critique of Heidegger’s concept of sociality comes to be substantiated through her existential-philosophical approach to his understanding of the transcendent character of Dasein. By objecting to Heidegger’s definition of Dasein as ecstatic temporality, Stein points out his inattentiveness to authentic otherness in Being and Time, which reaches out into a problem surrounding Mitsein. I will further demonstrate how Stein, by ascribing to Dasein an enduring and sustaining quality in the midst of ecstasy, uses Heidegger’s concept of Dasein in order to formulate her own social ontology.

    Abstract [sv]

Please Be Patient: A Cultural Phenomenological Study of Haemodialysis and Kidney Transplantation Care2016Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the practice of haemodialysis and kidney transplantation, the two medical therapies available for persons with kidney failure, from a phenomenological perspective. A basic assumption made in the thesis is that contemporary biomedicine is deeply embedded in the cultural, historical, economic, and political circumstances provided by the particular local, national, and transnational contexts in which it is practiced. The aim of the thesis is twofold. On the one hand, the aim is to examine the forms of person- and patienthood enacted and negotiated in haemodialysis and kidney transplantation care and in the daily lives of persons with kidney failure. On the other hand, the aim is to investigate the ways in which the enacted and negotiated forms of person- and patienthood are culturally embedded and normatively charged. In order to examine and investigate this twofold aim, an empirical material has been gathered that comprises observations and in-depth interviews with patients and caregivers at four haemodialysis units, one in Riga, Latvia, and three in Stockholm, Sweden. The theoretical approach and methodology of the study is cultural and phenomenological in character, drawing on an ethnological and anthropological understanding of culture as processual and relational, and on a phenomenological understanding of personhood as embodied and intertwined with the surrounding world. The thesis shows that patients’ encounters and attempts to deal with the diagnoses and treatments associated with kidney failure are complex and often misalign them with the normatively charged orientations enacted and recommended by medicine. The complex situation that emerges when they undergo transplantation, for example, stands in stark contrast to the widespread official view of organ transplantation as a self-evidently health-bringing and normalising therapy. Through their repeated and extensive experiences of undergoing haemodialysis and living with the disease, patients eventually become able to create a synthesis between their lived experiences of their own body and their body as a medical object – what in the thesis is called a ‘sick body’ – a synthesis that allows them to reorient themselves in life and experience a sense of direction. This process relies, to a large extent, on the temporal structure that haemodialysis affords life; it is by repeatedly undergoing the treatment that patients become able to create a sick body. Even so, many of them find this temporal structure problematic; they experience it as disruptive of their control and future-orientedness and as causing an existentially difficult-to-handle boredom. The thesis also shows that the political developments and the norms prevalent in the two national contexts studied greatly affect the orientations of the treatment practices and the participants’ lives. In both Riga and Stockholm, ideals of freedom, activity, control, and self-actualisation influence what forms of patienthood and personhood are enacted. The study indicates that persons who fall ill with a serious and chronic disease only gradually become able to understand and actively cope with their differently embodied circumstances of life. This suggests that medical professionals should not too hastily enlist their patients as experts on their own bodies, but rather provide them with the time and support necessary for making repeated attempts at creating and maintaining a life with a sick body.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to explore the complexity of the concept of the victim within the context of organ trading. By examining the intricate phenomenon of organ trade, we show how prevailing notions of victimhood form the basis of concrete social practices. The empirical basis for this exploration comprises in-depth interviews conducted during fieldwork in South Africa and Kosovo. We also draw on research undertaken at various expert meetings. What our research in these locations attests to is that one-dimensional and generalised conceptualisations of victimhood are rife, and that these tend to be founded on a pre-theorised opposition between agency and victimhood. For persons who become practically and intimately involved in dealing with cases of organ trade – such as investigators and prosecutors – such conceptualisations do not hold. What is required is an understanding of victimhood that takes into account its complexity. In this paper, we explore attempts to grasp and reduce this complexity, and argue against generalised concepts of victimhood and for concepts that are sensitive to contextual and relational variations.
