Equal power - lasting peace: obstacles for women's participation in peace processes2012Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Violence, corruption and unequal laws are some of the obstacles that keep women in conflict-torn regions from participating in peace processes on equal terms with men. Another big part of the problem is the international community prioritizing men in senior positions in peace operations, according to the new report Equal Power – Lasting Peace by the Swedish women and peace organization The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation.

The report Equal Power – Lasting Peace is based on field studies conducted in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iraq, the DR Congo and Liberia. Although the countries and conflicts differ, the patterns are strikingly similar.

In all the regions women and women’s organizations play important roles in resolving conflicts in local communities and in managing everyday life.

But when it comes to formal decision fora the doors are closed for women. This is contrary to the statements of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which emphasizes that, in order for reaching a sustainable peace, women must participate on the same terms as men in all parts of peace processes.

Whose place?: emplaced narratives and the politics of belonging in East Jerusalem's contested neighbourhood of Silwan2015Inngår i: Space & Polity, ISSN 1356-2576, E-ISSN 1470-1235, Vol. 19, nr 2, s. 191-205Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores the relationship between politics of belonging, narratives and place. We do this through a case study of the contested neighbourhood of Silwan in East Jerusalem, partly appropriated by an archaeological excavation site. Three conflicting narratives that make claims to the place are identified. They are geographically anchored, (re)produced in and through the material form of the place, and symbolically retold through social and moral meaning-making activities. Such an emplaced reading makes it possible to understand how divergent narratives produce insecurity and violence when enacted in and through materially and geographically contested sites.

    Sustainable Financing through Crowdfunding2019Inngår i: Sustainability, E-ISSN 2071-1050, Vol. 11, nr 3, artikkel-id 934Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The phenomenon of crowdfunding has been widely studied, while the sustainability of crowdfunded ventures is attracting growing interest from academia and society. In light of this interest, we conducted bibliometric analysis to study the relationship between crowdfunding and crowdfunded ventures’ sustainability orientation. We analyzed the number of publications, type of publications, and most productive countries, journals, and authors. We also analyzed the most cited articles and examined their approach to sustainability and crowdfunding. The results suggested that a sustainability orientation could bring about change in the current financial and environmental system.

Papperslöst motstånd: Om strategier och praktiker i post-välfärdens marginaler2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The post-modern western city is going through two central changes in the organization of paid labour. One is the switch from production of goods to production of services, and the other is the increasing rift between well-paid labour with permanent jobs, and temporarily employed workers with low wages. Both of these processes are rasified and gendered, and strike harder against women, young persons and people of emigrant background. The flexible capitalism creates an informalization of the economy, breaking with earlier regulations of the labour markets, in which workers also need to find informal strategies in their individual and collective struggles. In this paper, I search for these “new” experiences of living and working in late capitalist society, by doing open interviews with three women of Latin-American origin, working without official permission (without documents) in the informal economy of Stockholm. Analyzing their narratives, I look for the agency and resistance that, according to my theoretical perspective, is part of everyday life of all suppressed subjects. I come to the conclusion that irregular systems of recruitment and other forms of interdependency could be useful for other groups of precarious workers. The interviewed women also use strategies such as fantasizing about a reversed world or focusing their thoughts on the future, and deceiving or avoiding the power(full), to cope with their everyday work situations and the contradictory class mobility they experienced in the migration. However, these strategies often reproduce an acceptance of power more than a resistance to it, and show us how the capitalism works as an hegemonic ideology incorporated in us all.

A World Order in Transformation?: A Comparative Study of Consequences of the War and Reactions to These Changes in the Region2024Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Russia's full-scale invasion and war of aggression against Ukraine has, in addition to all the destruction, grief and terror for the people concerned, unravelled the profound instability in what has conventionally been understood as the world order.

The annual publication CBEES State of the Region report focuses on Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, the Balkans, and the Baltic Sea region, where we find countries that are closest to the war. This year, we have engaged over 30 scholars to analyze how the countries in this region have been affected by the war to form a tentative understanding of the unfolding consequences of the war for the region. Understandably, the consequences of the war tie into historical and contemporary conditions that also preceded the war.

The report presents a contemporary overview of the diversity of challenges the region and its countries face today, both on a macro level and on a grassroots level and gives a preliminary analysis of the implications for the region's future.

Constructions and Instrumentalization of the Past: A Comparative Study on Memory Management in the Region2020Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The CBEES State of the Region Report 2020 reveals disturbing tendencies to control and politicize the past in several countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Also, the report documents the great extent to which authoritarian and authoritarian-leaning governments actively intervene in how crucial parts of their country’s history are to be written, taught, researched, remembered, and commemorated – or neglected and ignored. Furthermore, the report discusses the failure of some governments to deal with restitution for past injustices, and the way some politicians forbid access to important state archives, hinder the teaching of the history of contemporary events, or withdraw funding to or even close down independent research institutions altogether.

Ecological Concerns in Transition: A Comparative Study on Responses to Waste and Environmental Destruction in the Region2023Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the CBEES State of the Region Report 2022/23 is to present an insight to the diferent environmental challenges facing the region due to the legacy of communist modernity, the breakdown of communism and the transition period, aswell as the ongoing war. It also sheds light on how political and economical concerns shape the approach to the environment and maps contemporary awareness and responses, forms of resistance and engagements with these issues in the region. The report gathers in-depth analyses of environmental concerns intransition in the region with particular focus on destruction and waste. It draws out common features, but also highlights local and cultural diversity in the region when it comes to waste, nature and activism.

The report consists of essays dealing with overall themes and 15 country reports. Together the individual contributions givea nuanced picture of the environmental threats in the region, the complexity linked to ideas of modernity and political and economic decision-making as well as values and rights claimedby Indigenous people and even nature itself. The current war in Ukraine adds another dimension to ecological concerns and bring new levels of destruction to the region.

The report is the third in a series of annual reports from CBEES (Centre for Baltic and East European Studies), reporting and refecting on the social and political developmentsin the Baltic Sea Region and Central and Eastern Europe, each year from a new and topical perspective. The overall purpose with this initiative is to offer a publication that will be of great interest to fellow researchers, policy makers, stakeholders, and the general public.

The Many Faces of the Far Right in the Post-Communist Space: A Comparative Study of Far-Right Movements and Identity in the Region2022Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the CBEES State of the Region Report 2021 is to map out the many varieties of far-right parties and movements in contemporary Central and Eastern Europe, a region typically described as marked by Euroscepticism, illiberalism and increasing tendencies towards authoritarianism. The report gathers in-depth analyses of the development and crucial features of far-right actors in 13 countries. It draws out certain common themes, but also highlights the diversity of far-right politics in the region.

In the individual contributions of this report, the participating researchers depict a nuanced picture of the far right and the relative importance of, for example, the legacy of nationalist dissident movements, exile groups and organizations, and far-right actors’ diferent notions of empires, civilizations, spheres of identities, powers, and oppositions such as east and west, and north and south; all play a role both in relation to the current political agenda and to the memory or narratives of the past.

In sum, we are witnessing a general turn away from the pro-European liberalism towards a more isolationist or protectionist – not to say xenophobic – nationalism.

The report is the second in a series of annual reports from CBEES (Centre for Baltic and East European Studies), reporting and refecting on the social and political developments in the Baltic Sea Region and Central and Eastern Europe, each year from a new and topical perspective. The overall purpose with this initiative is to ofer a publication that will be of great interest to fellow researchers, policy makers, stakeholders, and the general public.

Environmental Education and Gender: Voices from India and Brazil2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Dramatic changes in the environmental patterns represent a threat to human beings and life on this planet. However, due to differences in the social roles and rights between women and men, a gender perspective is essential to understand how these changes in the environment are affecting individuals in their societies. Even though gender is appointed as a relevant factor when reflecting on the relationship human beings and nature, women’s knowledge, perspectives and needs are being overlooked by the Environmental Education research and theory. This research aims at investigating the relevance of a gender perspective in Environmental Education programs in societies where women are the main responsible for the household and childcare. To this end, the activities of two environmental NGOs – one from India and one from Brazil – have been investigated through the case study methodology. As per the methods applied, semi-structure interviews have been carried out with 10 women from both countries. Through gender lenses the formal and informal forces that influence social roles and power dynamics in the referred societies are analyzed. The empirical findings demonstrate that in both Indian and Brazilian societies women are still the main house and children caretakers. Such role implies the responsibility of deciding about energy and water consumption, waste management and other domestic expenditures. Empirical results suggest that when a woman is environmental-aware she has the potential to make more sustainable choices and thus educate other members of the family. However, being the main responsible for the private sphere can deprive women from playing a major role in the public level where key decision about the environment are taken. The present study represents a key contribution to the Environmental Education theory and research as it addresses the poorly explored field of Environmental Education and Gender issues.

    Translation and Translocality in Gin Müller's Trans Gender Moves2016Inngår i: Transgender Studies Quarterly, ISSN 2328-9252, E-ISSN 2328-9260, Vol. 3, nr 3-4, s. 611-617Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This article reviews Gin Müller's play Trans Gender Moves, arguing that it has translation, on several levels and in its broadest sense, at the core of its themes and aesthetics. Based on the performers’ real-life stories, Trans Gender Moves is about what it might mean to live in transition between and across genders, but also languages, cultures, and times. With a departure from their own translational experience as an audience member, the author looks at how the play connects translation to interpretation and discusses how the stage is crafted into a “translation site,” or “translocality,” where the overlapping places, times, and languages of the performers’ everyday lives are explored. It is crucial to the politics of Trans Gender Moves that all the actors, as well as the director, have themselves experienced living trans lives and that the play, by telling the life stories in the words of the people who lived them, brings trans voices into the realm of authority. Moreover, it is especially noteworthy that the performers and the audience are involved in a form of engagement that begins from multiplicity. The author suggests that the play might be used to further reflect on the challenge of how we are to escape monolingualism in transgender studies.

    Abstract [en]

“To build a nation in the true sense (...) is to build the character of its people-of ourselves, to build an attitude of mind which will enables us to live together with our fellow citizen (...), in mutual friendliness and cooperation”

Tanzania is a country consisting of more than 130 ethnicities and three major religions. It is surrounded by continuous conflict which could be seen as a suitable environment for identity-related violence to flourish, but instead it is a country that should be seen as a role model in dealing with ethnic religious identities through a self-created system, which includes a political vision and an ideology. The purpose of this thesis has been to explore and describe a country that has worked through politics for a society that has a place for religion, but not religion mixed with politics. The study is based on secondary empirical material and on field work done in the Babati district in Tanzania. The result is important for several reasons, in today’s identity-focused world, since it illustrates the need to recognize people's multiple identities, to be able to integrate to create a foundation of tolerance and respect between religions.

Investigating inclusive risk communication in the context of influenza outbreaks: Insights from South Korea and Vietnam2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Outbreaks of novel influenza viruses are continually occurring on many places on our planet, with the ultimate and most extreme consequence being a full-scale pandemic. Modern communication technology is widely used for risk communication regarding recommended change in behavior patterns and other precautions in order to mitigate the transmission. However, the assumption and bias that modern communication technology constitutes the norm causes vulnerable groups to be at possible risk of systematic exclusion to correct and updated information. Through conducting a literature- and case analysis, the aim of this study is to identify insufficient or inadequate risk communication efforts in South Korea and Vietnam during influenza outbreaks, especially with concern of vulnerable groups. Further, to analyze how national influenza preparedness plans observe or ignore these insufficiencies. Results show that vulnerable groups are explicitly recognized in the preparedness plan of Vietnam. However, the South Korean preparedness plan show a more homogenous approach. Both South Korea and Vietnam showed a broad variety of channels used in their risk communication strategies which could be positive in terms of a broad outreach to a heterogenous population, including vulnerable groups. Four key factors that moderate the outcomes of risk communication were identified: Channels, Messages, Transparency and Trust.

Crowdsourcing Cultural Heritage As Democratic Practice2022Inngår i: Participatory Practices in Art and Cultural Heritage: Learning Through and from Collaboration / [ed] Christoph Rausch; Ruth Benschop;Emilie Sitzia; Vivian van Saaze, Cham: Springer, 2022, s. 39-48Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Cultural heritage institutions are central for the creation of our common identities and histories, and are thus a cornerstone for democracy. However, they have conflicting roles, as institutions for the free dissemination of knowledge or as gatekeepers of the authorized heritage discourse. They may have historically monitored and marginalized certain groups, yet they can also actively work for a just and pluralistic society. To make heritage collections more open through digitization, participatory methods such as crowdsourcing are put forward, motivated by efficiency but also as a way to create a more diverse and polyphonic heritage. However, there is a lack of vocabulary that puts these different techniques in a wider context of established democratic theories. In this chapter we discuss practices and policies of crowdsourcing in relation to notions of democracy. As argued these participatory technologies can be seen as means to support very different notions of democracy. From our studies of five different crowdsourcing platforms in the US and Denmark, we seek to analyze how these different aspects of democracy are supported, and to develop an analytical model for participatory technologies with long term development and preservation of cultural heritage in mind.

    Abstract [en]

The story of the Patos-Marinza Oilfeld in southern Albania is contradictory and contested, like all good stories. The history of modern Albania is contained in the chronicle of this oilfeld as it carries with it the hopes and dreams of industrial development during the Communist era, as well as the despair and environmental degradation during the breakdown of communism and the civil war following the national pyramid scheme in 1997. In recent decades, Patos-Marinza has been revitalized and modernized, attracting foreign investors, new technology, skills development and experiencing record high production. The development of the oilfeld has also been accompanied by environmental restoration through the introduction of state-of-the-art technology and the clean-up of the pollution of soil and water resources. However, Patos-Marinza has also been associated with several scandals and controversies, such as widespread poverty, excessive gas emissions, earth tremors and community protests. In the same way that the nationwide optimistic expectations on the transition to democracy and market economy have been replaced by gloomy reality and the consequential exodus of young ambitious Albanians, the development of Patos-Marinza has left many residents both disappointed and in a state of despair. Thus, when I examine the current narratives about the Patos-Marinza Oilfeld, various layers of Albanian history call for my attention. As a former oil industry consultant and employee, I spent almost fve years working at the Patos-Marinza Oilfeld and have several frst-hand experiences of its controversies. In recent years, I have revisited the Patos-Marinza Oilfeld in the role of researcher. This text uses various sources to illustrate the milestones in the development of the Patos-Marinza Oilfeld, as well as the various discourses that describe its modernization and expansion

Look beyond the bin!: Solid Waste Management and recycling at the Asian Institute of Tecnology2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The generation of domestic waste is at present less than 1 kg/day per person in Thailand, but generated amounts keeps steadily growing. This trend is closely connected to an increasing population and economic growth, something that is creating waste management issues. The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) outside Bangkok has the potential of being a leader in sustainable development in the Southeast Asian region, however a substantial opportunity is being missed – best environmental practices are currently not prioritized. Only 4 % of the total waste generated on campus is recycled at AIT, 3 % is composted and 93 % is taken to the municipal waste disposal site. Fluorescent light bulbs and other hazardous household waste are disposed on the campus dumpsite. Some measures have been undertaken in order to improve the solid waste management (SWM) at AIT, e.g. a new waste collection facility has been built in the outskirts of campus, where more space is provided in order to facilitate waste separation.

The field research for this study was carried out at AIT and the goal was to examine the SWM network, the problems and to analyse the recycling habits on campus. To investigate and visualize the actors involved in the SWM at AIT, the Actor-Network theory (ANT) was applied as an analytical framework. The generation of waste is the macro actor i.e. the reason for the existence of SWM. Other actors are the AIT students and staff (produce waste), the new Campus Environment and Development Committee – CEDC (the controlling part), environmental awareness (attitude towards recycling), and waste collectors.

The results from the survey witness of that people have a positive but somewhat cautious attitude towards the sustainability of source separation. Separating waste at source is a key mechanism for solving the SWM problem but people are uncertain of how to separate each waste fraction. There is a strong need to designate a coordinator of the SWM at AIT and as long as there is a lack of leadership, a goal of environmentally sustainable practices cannot be reached. The new CEDC is currently not performing any actions towards an integrated SWM.

Which meanings are attributed to the Swedish mountains in the normative discourse 2020? How does the portrayal of the mountains relate to Sami and Swedish culture? What opportunities and difficulties are there for the development of Sami tourism in relation to the mountain tourism norm 2020? The purpose of this thesis is to study the normative portrayal of the Swedish mountains by Swedish and Sami tourist organizers in 2020 and how it could affect the development of Sami tourism. Through colonial and normative discourse theory, the thesis investigates how the Swedish mountains as a phenomenon relate to Sami and Swedish culture. Findings from previous research shows that the norm of Swedish Mountain portrayal has historically been based on the perceptions of the Swedish majority population. For Sami tourism to be profitable, it should therefore be conducted in accordance with the expectations of the majority society. The empirical material in this qualitative discourse analytical study consists of advertisements for tourist activities in Swedish tourist magazines, websites for Sami and Swedish tourist organizers and the magazine “Turist”. The material has been published or is available in 2020. The material testifies to a narrow normativity in how the Swedish mountains are portrayed by both Swedish and Sami tourist organizers. The mountains are portrayed as wild and different to Swedish society but also as harmonious and easily accessible. The analysis shows a contradiction between Swedish tourists' expectations and the administration of the Swedish mountains. The conclusion of the study is that Sami tourist organizers have a unique opportunity to stand out in a narrow normative market with their Sami identity and culture. This opportunity, however, relies on Sami tourist organizers exclusive right to portray their culture.

Participation and Legitimacy: Actor Involvement for Nature Conservation2017Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This PhD thesis in environmental science aims to contribute to the theoretical and empirical understanding of the relation between participation and legitimacy in multi-level environmental governance.

It is widely assumed that actor involvement has great potential to improve the legitimacy of nature conservation through long-term acceptance and target achievement. However, local resource conflicts problematize the way a relation between participation and legitimacy is depicted on other administrative levels. Studies exploring the effect that participation has on legitimacy are relatively rare, especially in multi-level arrangements of coastal conservation.

In this thesis the relation between participation and legitimacy on the local level is examined, as well as how this relation is conditioned by multi-level governance and power. The relation is empirical studied with two local implementation processes of the Helsinki Convention’s network of marine protected areas (HELCOM MPAs). The cases are located in Sweden.

Sweden and the Baltic Sea region are in the forefront of participation in nature conservation, and therefore act as a strong case for the exploration of institutional participation. However, despite apparent political will and international support, the efficiency of actor involvement for nature conservation has been questioned, also for the HELCOM MPA and especially on the local level.

Based on the results of this study, I question the assumption that weak legitimacy predominantly is an issue of insufficient information sharing. The findings show that involving actors to legitimize the adoption of strict adherence to a pre-established model of conservation likely fails to create long term support for conservation. Instead, relocation of power to the affected actors seems essential in order to make participation establish legitimacy. It appears important to create room for local influence in the design, management and implementation of a particular conservation area in the particular place/context. In both examined cases, there are elements of participation that support legitimacy, for example the development of a shared vision. There are also elements that hamper legitimacy, such as, for example, the high expectations different actors have on participation to reach consensus on protective values. These unmet expectations seem to fuel conflicts of interests among actors on different levels.

    Abstract [en]

Local participation, especially in natural resource management, has been promoted as a key strategy in the quest for sustainable development. Community-based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) is an approach that has generally been promoted as an institution that genuinely includes and empowers ‘local people' in natural resource use and management. This paper examines how local participation in conservation projects works in practice by drawing on concepts from institutional and actor-oriented theories and applying a case study approach to examine community-based mangrove management at Jozani-Pete, Zanzibar. Here CBNRM became embedded within a conservation agenda that resulted in conflict, resistance, frustration and uncertainty amongst community members. The paper offers insight into how exogenously initiated CBNRM projects have difficulty gaining traction unless they both address existing power relations and deliver on promises of material benefits. If they fail to do so the experience of the Jozani-Pete case study suggests that CBNRM may work to further marginalize already marginalized people.

    Abstract [sv]

The Swedish Transport Administration – a modern developer of society or a talkative Swedish man? A comparative analysis of the corporate identity and the media image in terms of representatives State authorities are increasingly concerned with brand image construction and organizational identity work. In this paper the media images of the Swedish Transport Administration in four newspapers is compared with the authority’s corporate identity, i.e. the image promoted by the authority in and through its own channels. The results show that the characteristic representative of the Swedish Transport Administration in the press is a male person with a distinctive Swedish name. This is inconsistent with the authority’s self-presentation, where the Transport Administration is constructed as a modern “developer of society” characterized by diversity and equality. This analysis results in two arguments, one suggesting that the discrepancy between the media image and the corporate identity could have a negative impact on the authority’s credibility, and the other one suggesting that state authorities would be expected to actively promote equality and diversity by a conscious selection of spokesperson.

Getting the transport right - for what?: What transport policy can tell us about the construction of sustainability2019Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis studies transport as a governing tool that shapes the physical environment and human society, as well as having environmental impacts. The aim is to learn what policy for transport can say about what sustainability means and does. My focus is Stockholm municipal policy between 2007 and 2017, a period of sustainability concerns and large transport project agreements.

Using the What’s the problem represented to be? approach, I look at measures proposed for the ‘right’ transport of people and ask: what kind of ‘tool’ is transport produced to be, and how is sustainability constructed?

The transport system is one of the most visible parts of the built environment and recognized for its negative impact on environmental and human health. As co-constitutive of social practices, transport is far from a mere technical issue. Despite this, transport policy studies are often technical in approach. Since policy is not a neutral response to pre-existing ‘problems’, I consider transport policy to be part of a creative process for the whole of society.

A main contribution to the field of sustainable transport is a view of transport as a tool for governing and inherently political. Stockholm is frequently hailed as a ‘green’ city. I was interested to explore this ‘best case’ scenario and see what might consolidate the two seemingly opposing aims of greener transport and more car use. I find that Stockholm policy for transport is permeated with technological optimism, reliance on individual choices, and concern for economic growth. Policy measures construct transport as a tool to affirm the commuter paradigm and promote urban expansion. Attention to the sustainability of transport concentrates on emissions from transport work, which is to be addressed by individual consumption choices. Sustainability is associated with efficiency, technological innovation, and above all urbanity. The proposals paradoxically construct the subject as both co-responsible for problem and solution (the conscious or irresponsible consumer), and as a cog in the wheel for economic growth (the commuting worker). This disregards both the homo ludens and the citizen: play and the political. These aspects become subordinated while policy enhances the role of work.

    Abstract [en]

Research on leadership emergence has mainly focused on adulthood and relied on retrospective accounts of childhood factors. Based on a prospective cohort study of 7719 boys born in 1953, of which 5928 were later drafted, we explored individual differences in leadership emergence in childhood and early adulthood. The data set consisted of register data from different time points and a survey of the cohort in the 6th grade. As expected, cognitive ability, tallness and muscular power were decisive for assessment of military officer suitability. However, we also found a moderate to strong impact on this assessment score from social class, leadership aspirations in childhood, birth order, self-regulatory skills in school, parental support, and previous participation in extracurricular activities. Similarly, social class, cognitive ability, developmental experiences, and birth order were important for nominations as class party organizer in the 6th grade. Delay of gratification was not associated with these nominations at all and was neutralized by cognitive ability in relation to officer suitability. The results strongly support a life-cycle approach to leadership emergence.

We (All) Want You? Perceived Military Leadership Potential and Actual Leadership Role Occupancy in Working Life: A Longitudinal Study of a Swedish Cohort2024Inngår i: Armed forces and society, ISSN 0095-327X, E-ISSN 1556-0848Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

One of the main tasks of the armed forces is to recruit and select future soldiers and to identify potential officers. However, these procedures may have a wider societal impact beyond the borders of the military organization itself. This study aims to examine how compatible assessments of military leadership potential are with those in the labor market. Using longitudinal data concerning a large cohort of Swedish males who underwent mustering during the early 1970s, we analyzed the association between officer suitability assessments and managerial role occupancy at age 50 to 55, while controlling for socio-demographic factors in childhood and adulthood. We found a high level of predictability, whereby those who were ranked highest were four times more likely to hold managerial positions than those with the lowest ranking. Results are discussed in relation to perceptions about leadership skills and possible institutional isomorphism between the armed forces and other societal organizations.

Adaptation, now?: Exploring the Politics of Climate Adaptation through Poststructuralist Discourse Theory2019Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Increasing evidence of anthropogenic climate change and the recognition that warming is likely to go beyond 2°C raises the need for responses that help people cope with the anticipated changes. The rise of attention to so-called climate adaptation on political agendas at the local, national and international scale has come about with a hastily growing field of academic knowledge production. But while adaptation choices are inherently political, adaptation has been largely considered a ‘problem free’ process and ‘tame’ challenge; only a relatively small strand of scholarly work engages in critical enquiry into the idea of adaptation, the discursive practices through which it is imagined, and related questions of power and politics.

Responding to calls for more attention to the socio-political dimensions of adaptation and for conceptually embedded research, this thesis investigates the creation, interpretation and use of adaptation as a concept in research, policy and practice. Drawing on Poststructuralist Discourse Theory and the so-called Logics of Critical Explanation in particular, it develops a perspective through which the politics of adaptation can be investigated in a theoretically and methodologically consistent and transparent manner. Through a close analysis of official adaptation discourses at the international level, the EU level, and the national level in Germany, the thesis enquires into the discursive practices around adaptation responses and what these different discourses open up or limit in terms of broader implications for political action.

The contributions of the thesis are empirical, methodological and conceptual. In addition to providing critical insights into contemporary understandings of adaptation, including revealing some depoliticising ‘building blocks’ in conventional adaptation discourses, the thesis makes two important conceptual contributions to the growing field of critical adaptation studies: (1) It suggests that the increasing interconnectedness between people and places makes it impossible to know whether adaptation efforts undertaken have in reality reduced net vulnerability or simply shuffled vulnerability across the board. Ignoring the potential for such redistributive effects can have significant consequences in practice and will likely lead to unsustainable and, in the long run, maladaptive outcomes. (2) It argues that non-rational and affective dimensions are vital to the emergence of adaptation responses and that paying attention to them is important if critical scholarship is to understand and intervene in the persistence of techno-managerial approaches to adaptation. Furthermore, to the field of critical policy studies this thesis makes a methodological contribution by developing a new analytical framework for poststructuralist policy analysis.

    Abstract [en]

The accuracy of interdisciplinarity measurements depends on how well the data is used for this purpose and whether it can meaningfully inform about work that crosses disciplinary domains. At present, there are no ad hoc databases compiling information only and exclusively about interdisciplinary research, and those interested in assessing it have to reach out to existing databases that have been compiled for other purposes. Karlovčec and Mladenić (Scientometrics 102:433–454, 2015) saw an opportunity in a national database that brings together information meant to be used for assessing the scientific performance of the Slovene academic community, which they used to obtain information that was then applied to measure interdisciplinarity. However, the context and purpose for which databases are produced have certain implications on their use. In their study, the authors overlooked the social and political context within which that specific database was created, is maintained and is used for (evaluation of research performance). This resulted in an incomplete interpretation of the results obtained and description of the current situation. This commentary addresses two aspects that warrant further consideration: one pertains to the limitations of the dataset itself and the measures used to debunk these, while the second pertains to the line of reasoning behind the integration and use of IDR measures in this study.

Issues and opportunities with participatory governance for the management of marine resources in the Adriatic Sea2014Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The marine natural environment is under high pressure. Not only are marine resources as flora and fauna intensively used (with consequent decrease of stocks) but in recent times, the seas have become the next frontier of a specific type of anthropization (i.e. the conversion of open space by human action) that of energy infrastructure. While this is a current process and, within the European Union, only recently policy actions have been taken in order facilitate a more coherent coordination of interventions (Marine Strategy), little research has been done about formal and informal institutional arrangements already existing between the many stakeholders who have specific stakes in the Adriatic Sea.

The North Adriatic Sea is an area characterised by a history of (between state) conflicts and tensions that impacted on the development of collaborative arrangement for the management of the marine environment. Of interest to this research, therefore, was to map out formal and informal institutional arrangements currently in place between stakeholders from Italy, Slovenia and Croatia - countries with coastal access to the North Adriatic Sea. Also, of an interest was to understand if, and how, participatory practices are being used in relation to decision-making and management of the marine natural environment ( in particular siting of an energy infrastructure).

Methods:  In this case study we used interviews, archive material, policy documents and other secondary data (statistics, official documents) for the analysis.

Findings: The preliminary analysis of our data suggests that the North Adriatic Sea is a highly politicized area over which different stakeholders advance claims but engage in little, or no cooperation. Marine resources appear to be under high pressure and in the following months we will continue the exploration into the institutional arrangements.

Opening up spatial planning to the participation of children and youth: the Swedish experience2023Inngår i: European Planning Studies, ISSN 0965-4313, E-ISSN 1469-5944, nr 2, s. 252-269Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article reports on a study examining the pathway to and practices for inclusive participatory planning in Sweden. Recently, the Swedish government has transposed the UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child into national law, making it a requirement for Swedish planners to involve children and youth in participatory spatial planning processes. The challenges planners face when needing to open up planning and engage children and youth in more structured ways, have not been discussed very much just yet. This study uses Sweden-centered empirical literature together with interviews with a selected group of respondents to contribute at that debate.

An Overview of Youth-led Legal Mobilization Cases in Response to the Environmental Crisis: Stockholm 22 June 20232023Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Over recent years youth has emerged as an influential voice on the topic of climate change, raising the alarm about climate change-related risks and calling for policy action. Youth have been active and mobilising across squares and streets from where they called upon those in power to act on their duties to protect citizens from environmental harm and to secure a sustainable future. In addition to street protest, youth of different ages, including children, have been turning to courts to sue national governments for non compliance with national and/or international law, or conventions. Youth-led litigation appears to be emerging as a significant tool for promoting the representation and inclusion of young people’s voices in contemporary decision-making processes. In this report, we present the outcomes of a project activity where we sought to map and compile informationon litigation cases. The result of this activity is a descriptive database summarizing the status of youth-led litigation cases as of April 2023. In this document,we provide a summary of that information and highlight a few observed trends, which can serve as a resource for those interested in studying youth-led mobilization and its governance outcomes for a more sustainable future.

Sexual and gender-based harassment against police employees in European countries: a scoping review2024Inngår i: Journal of Sexual Aggression, ISSN 1355-2600, E-ISSN 1742-6545Artikkel, forskningsoversikt (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Sexual and gender-based harassment is a work environment concern, especially in hierarchical and male-dominant organisations such as the police. This scoping review aims to examine the existing literature on such harassment against police employees in Europe to identify the available knowledge and highlight the gaps for future studies. Following the Arksey and O'Malley framework, 16 relevant articles were analysed. Most of the studies were focused on sexual harassment, and gender-based harassment was mostly absent or mixed with other discriminations. The analysis resulted in six main themes: existence of sexual and gender-based harassment; perpetrators; associated factors; consequences; individual response; and impact of organisational policies. The findings demonstrate that such harassment remains prevalent among police employees, emphasising the need for continuous and rigorous supervision, evaluation, and comprehensive revision of policies by police authorities. This study recommends further research to address the identified gaps in this field.

    PRACTICE IMPACT STATEMENT

The findings presented in this article have the potential to significantly advance the field of police research in Europe by providing a comprehensive map of existing knowledge and identifying important gaps within this research domain. Moreover, the study facilitates the application of more accurate and comprehensive methodologies. Additionally, the outcomes of this research can directly benefit police authorities by offering insights to enhance organizational culture and the work environment for police employees.

MapRom: Mapping the Romani population in rural and semi-urban Wallachia in 18382023Dataset
    Abstract [en]

The main archival source of MapRom database is the “Census of the population or Statistics of the Principalities (Wallachia and Moldova) of 1838”, ANIC, Fond Catagrafii, part I, Inventory number 501, volumes numbered I/8 to I/107 from the Historical National Archives, Bucharest, mostly unpublished and now digitized and automatized for the first time, in regard to Romani population.

This Census was conducted by the Interior Ministry in February 1838. It is the first preserved Romanian modern census of population and dwellings, which introduced new techniques of reviewing, such as the nominal lists and the great number (24) of demographic variables, including ethnicity. The unit of observation was the “household”, and the scope was to obtain detailed information about: 1) the settled population by age group, and sex; 2) the number of households and their structure; 3) the number of residential buildings and their distribution according to the material from which they are built; 4) population distribution according to their participation in economic activity; 5) distribution of population by skills and occupations.

Based on this information, the MapRom database presents: statistics of the Roma households per village, number of Roms per village, number of different Romani ethnic sub-groups (Lăieș, Vătraș, Rudar, Zlătar, etc), average Romani household size per village, age distribution, sex distribution, number of Roms per skill, geographic distribution of the Roms (in uplands and lowlands), cultivated land area by Roms per village, etc. We found insignificant number of free Roms, rest of them were slaves. For more than 50% of them, we have reconstructed, from other (unpublished) sources the name of the owners (private noblemen, or Monasteries and churches).

We searched for other statistical documents to complete our data from 1838 Census, such as the Statistics of the Turkish Gypsies (1833, manuscript ANIC, Vornicia temnitelor, file 354/1833), Statistics of Boyar Gypsy slaves (1832, manuscript ANIC, Diplomatice, dos. 147/1832) and Statistics of Monastery Gypsy slaves (1844, manuscript ANIC, Logofeția Pricinilor Bisericești, dos. 25/1844). etc. When we compared these statistics, we found major discrepancies leading to the important source critical conclusion that the 1838 census concerns mostly the permanently settled Gypsies and included few of the nomadic people. Further examination showed that the number of nomadic Gypsies was relatively small. We also found documents that indicated that Gypsies of the Muslim faith were not either registered in the 1838 census.Over time the nominal lists of the 1838 Census for four counties (Ialomiţa, Gorj, Mededinţi and Vâlcea) as well as some two rural sub-districts and two towns has been lost, but that for 14 Wallachian counties has been preserved and entered in MapRom. The five volumes of nominal material for the capital city Bucharest (with a very large and multi-ethnic population) was not researched in this project as the census there was complexly different from that of the rural provinces in form and execution, but it is hoped that it can be researched at a later date.

We estimate that MapRom gathers information on between two-thirds and three-fourths of Wallachia’s Romani population.

Gastronomiska regioner: Ett verktyg för regional utveckling2014Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

2. Hur skall gastronomiska regioner byggas i Sverige? 3.

Kiru Valley Complexity: A case study over consequences of and causes to conflicts over irrigation water in Tanzania2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Inequalities among different power groups are getting obvious in Kiru Valley, Tanzania mainly due to water scarcity. This paper aims to examine, by a case study, the increasing competition over irrigation water among Kiru Valley farmers in relation to socio-economic stratification. It is possible to divide the examined parts of Kiru Valley farmers into three dif-ferent power groups corresponding to their access to irrigation water. First, large-scale sugar cane farmers owned by Tanzanians with Indian origin located on strategic positions near the main rivers. Second, upstream small-scale rice cultivators receiving water from the IFAD (International Found for Agricultural Development) irrigation system and, third, downstream small-scale farmers cultivating rice in the Mapea wetland. To achieve the objectives in this study, Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) techniques have been used and especially wealth rank-ings to measure the socio-economic stratification.

The wealth rankings demonstrate differences among Kiru Valley farmers. Those farmers connected to the IFAD irrigation system and the large-scale farmers have in higher amount a steady access to irrigation water than farmers cultivating the Mapea wetland. Consequently Mapea farmers are forced to rely on left over water from upstream IFAD farmers and sur-rounding large-scale farmers, leading to unfair distribution patterns and tensions among Kiru Valley farmers.  Finally, it has further been found that access to irrigation water is reflected in household economy. Mapea farmers have less capital goods and households properties com-pared to both IFAD-irrigators and large-scale farmers.

Thinking dementia differently: Dialogues between feminist scholarship and dementia studies2023Inngår i: Critical Dementia Studies: An Introduction / [ed] Richard Ward; Linn J. Sandberg, London: Routledge, 2023, s. 202-216Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter engages in critical dialogues between dementia studies and feminist scholarship. More specifically, the chapter explores how feminist studies can be useful for thinking and rethinking dementia and difference. The chapter engages with two feminist genealogies: feminist difference theory and feminist standpoint theory. Dementia has frequently been conceptualised in terms of negative difference as loss and deterioration, in particular in bio-medical discourse. More recent discourses have in contrast sought to underscore the sameness and normality of people with dementia, but this approach also functions to reinstate people with dementia into cognonormative Western modernist ideals of activity, agency and autonomy. Feminist difference theorists, however, provide ways of thinking affirmative difference. This approach to difference is neither a recourse to pathological difference nor to assimilationist sameness, but enables ways of thinking dementia as lived and embodied difference. The second approach to difference, feminist standpoint theory, concerns the different positionalities of people with dementia. In this argument, people with dementia, in particular those experiencing multiple forms of oppression, are understood as holding epistemic privilege – a particular knowledge of the oppressions of cognitive ableism. The chapter proposes a ‘“demented” standpoint’ as a way of approaching the different and unique knowledge of people with dementia and discusses further how this requires radical rethinking of methodologies in dementia studies.

Introduction: Why critical dementia studies and why now?2023Inngår i: Critical Dementia Studies: An Introduction / [ed] Richard Ward; Linn J. Sandberg, London: Routledge, 2023, s. 1-12Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter introduces critical dementia studies and gives a brief overview of the chapters and the thinking behind the structure of the volume. The introduction discusses the timeliness of critical dementia studies and the impetus behind the volume. Dementia is commonly understood as a disease category, ahistorical and value-free. Critical dementia studies, however, approaches dementia as a socially produced, political category, open to transformation and social change. Overall, critical dementia studies encompasses a diverse set of approaches that problematise, defamiliarise, denaturalise and destabilise common assumptions and orthodoxies in dementia research, policy and practice.

Choklad smakar godare med ett gott samvete: En kvalitativ studie om hur etiska överväganden påverkar Generation Z i deras köpbeslut2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Adolescents involvement in societal issues has been found to be able to influence companies.  Simultaneously, a growing interest in today’s consumers has been found to include ethical commitments in their consumption, a trend considered to be driven by young consumers. This can put an immense pressure on companies to take on a greater responsibility in societal issues. Young consumers in the year 2020 are considered to belong to Generation Z, a consumer group described as conscious and driven by topics of social development, predicted to possess future purchasing dominance. Whether or not Generation Z views consumption as a matter of involving ethical considerations could be of great importance to consider in order to attract the highly influential consumer group. The consequences for not taking this into consideration could result in not being able to reach out to the consumer group properly. Research has sought to understand ethical consumption in regards to generational and cultural differences. This study aims to expand the existing research area on ethical consumption in relation to Generation Z by implementing a focus on Swedish consumers within Generation Z.

The purpose of this study is to attain a deeper understanding of how Generation Z’s consumption is influenced by ethical considerations. This has been done by including a theoretical background on ethical consumption, the buying decision process as well as Generation Z. Given the background and purpose of this study, it is of interest to examine how Generation Z is influenced by ethical considerations in their purchase decision.

Through a qualitative research method and cross-sectional design, focus group interviews were conducted together with individuals within Generation Z. The empirical evidence from the study shows that Generation Z are influenced by ethical considerations, but not to the extent that it is conclusive for their purchase decision. The factors for purchasing an ethical product include regarding the ethical symbol as visually appealing, trusting the ethical labelling, having sufficient knowledge regarding the ethical stance, regarding the ethical stance as in line with their morals and values as well as their perceived price sensitivity for the ethical product.

    Abstract [sv]

Seeing and Doing Conservation Differently: A Discussion of Landscape Aesthetics, Wilderness, and Biodiversity Conservation2013Inngår i: Journal of Environment and Development, ISSN 1070-4965, E-ISSN 1552-5465, Vol. 22, nr 1, s. 3-24Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article argues that conservation agendas need to be informed by a landscape aesthetics that embraces the cultural and material richness of people’s relationship to place to better inform conservation agendas. Historical and contemporary views of landscape aesthetics and their relationship to nature conservation and notions  of wilderness need to be included to complement a scientific expert assessment of conservation needs and approaches. Recent examples of conservation projects in Zanzibar are used to reveal how representations and symbols in nature are deeply embedded in biodiversity conservation aspirations and practices promoted by conservation experts. The article posits that an embodied and pluralistic approach to landscape aesthetics can more profoundly contextualize the specificity of interaction between people and between people and their environments and lead to more viable conservation and development outcomes. This would provide a contingent perspective that would to help elucidate nuanced understandings of social relations and place, thereby better serving both conservation and development agendas.
