"Our future is our history": A qualitative interview study with Sami crafts people, analysing the tradition of craft making in a contemporary society2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay is a qualitative interview study with Sami craftspeople. The purpose of the study is to outline and analyse how my informants, being active Sami crafts people, relate to tradition, and tradition in a contemporary society. The analysis is carried out by examining the empirical material against the theoretical concept tradition, constructed by Michael L. Satlow. The methodological understanding of the material builds on discourse analysis; therefore, the analysed material is subsequently interpreted using the theoretical term articulation or articulative practices following discourse analysis by Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau. The analysis concludes that Sami craft making is a religious tradition, and further shows that certain traditional narratives are articulated in order to assert the stability of the tradition, in a contemporary and digital society.

    Abstract [en]

In contemporary western society, the changing religious diversity brought to the fore a more visible religion. The Swedish school and the Swedish classrooms are no exception. From a perspective of sensemaking and a wide understanding of religion and religious positions this thesis analyses the discourse on religion among pupils (age 9 to 16) in the Swedish elementary school and under what circumstances they do, or do not, talk about religion with each another.

This qualitative study includes themes from and contributes to the study of religion, research on children and young people, and particularly to religious education (RE) in Sweden and elsewhere. The results show that the pupils during the interviews showed different and parallel ways of understanding, relate to and way of talking about religion. However, to some degree they seemed to be unwilling to talk about religion with each other, even though they expressed some interest thereof. Two reasons for this were their limited common discourses on religion, and their concern and anxiety to create conflict and to “step on somebody’s toes”. The latter was also combined with their tendency to show tolerance, respect and deference towards each other. Thirdly, due to their partial lack of discourses on religion the pupils had difficulties to position themselves in relation to religion and to understand others. For instance, this came to the fore and was exemplified by the non-Christian Swedish pupils. They seemed to lack categories to speak of themselves in relation to religion and, for instance, answer questions like: “What do you believe in?”.

Even though the pupils did not talk much about religion with each other, the result shows that they had several ways of talking about and understanding religion and religious phenomena – for instance based on popular culture. Not all these understandings and discourses on religion where paid attention to in school or in class. Instead, the pupils had to adapt to discourses prevalent in school which narrowed the possible ways of understanding and talking about religion. In line with this, there were several positions in relation to religion – for instance unsure and uncertain positions – in these schools that was not observed. However, these pupils also have the need to express and understand themselves in relation to religion as well as being understood by others. This is a future challenge for RE-research as well as teaching in schools.

The results of this study show, lastly, that the experience and desires expressed by the pupils concerning talking about religion differed to a great extent from the use of dialogue in RE-research. Among the pupils it seemed that the conversation about religion was sacrificed on the altars of tolerance, respect and deference. These results were discussed in relation to the concept of safe space, a concept that needs to be elaborated and sharpened further in RE.

Gemensamma värderingar i ett individualistiskt samhälle: Om implementering av skolans värdegrund2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this survey the author discusses teachers interpretation of documents formulated bythe government. The text in focus is the beginning of the curriculum where the basicvalues for the Swedish school system are to be found. Since there are great difficultiesknowing what the politicians mean, this survey tries to discuss different words likesecularism, confessional, non-confessional, and what they mean. This might seemobvious at first but it is relevant when you discuss religion and it´s roll in liberaldemocracies. This survey also tries to show how different interpretation of the textwould lead to different practice because of the lack of an actual consensus. The idea, that rational collegial reflections on how to implement the values, would lead to acommon and equivalent for all Swedish schools is criticized. Especially when thisgoal, the homogenizing one, can’t be at the expense of pupils autonomy. That is, thatpupils in liberal democracies should as individuals be able to make up their values bythemselves. This is a problem because every interpretation of the values is an actwhere you estimate what you believe as right and true. In multicultural countries asSweden this means that there are all kinds of interpretations. And none of which couldbe called more true or false when it comes to values, since values can’t be measured. The reason for this is, as the survey shows, that not even values that claim to besecular are neutral. The survey shows that it is not possible to be non- confessional asthe curriculum tells teachers to be. Even secularism is a confession beside others.

    Abstract [sv]

Frälsningssynen inom kristendomens tre inriktningar: En kvalitativ studie2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

According to the directives of Lgr11, learning about Christianity should be an important part of religious education in secondary school (7th-9th grade) in Sweden. A school teacher must therefore have good knowledge of the field and of different aspects of the beliefs of the various Christian traditions.

This essay is about how salvation is conceived of by two members of the laity in each of three different Christian traditions: the Syriac Orthodox Church, the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of Sweden (which is Lutheran). As a theoretical perspective for my analysis, I have chosen the official views of salvation of these three churches. That is to say, views of the members of the laity have been compared with the official views of the respective churches. It is thus a very limited qualitative study aiming at finding out how the views of the laity conform to the official creed concerning salvation and whether there are any differences here between the churches. The result of this essay is that there were few differences and a lot of similarities between the laity belief in the relation to the official doctrines of salvation. Only among the protestant laity differences were prominent.

Ateism och sekulära livsåskådningar i religionskunskapsundervisningen: En kvalitativ studie om hur religionskunskapslärare i gymnasiet behandlar ateism och sekulära livsåskådningar i sin undervisning2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Alternative Islamic discourses and religious authority2013Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Like anywhere else, the present-day Islamic world too is grappling with modernity and postmodernity, secularisation and globalisation. Muslims are raising questions about religious representations and authority. This has given rise to the emergence of alternative Islamic discourses which challenge binary oppositions and dichotomies of orthodoxy and heterodoxy, continuity and change, state and civil society. It also leads to a dispersal of authority, a collapse of existing hierarchical structures and gender roles. This book further argues that the centre of gravity of many of these alternative Islamic discourses is shifting from the Arabic-speaking 'heartland' towards the geographical peripheries of the Muslim world and expatriate Muslims in North America and Europe. At the same time, in view of recent seismic shifts in the political constellation of the Middle East, the trends discussed in this book hold important clues for the possible direction of future developments in that volatile part of the Muslim world. © Carool Kersten and Susanne Olsson 2013. The different sides of religions: En intervjuundersökning fokuserad på kristna elevers upplevelse av kristendomens representation i religionsundervisningen2022Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish school system is one of the few school systems that offers non-confessional religious education. This type of education is particularly important in a society characterized by high diversity. The benefits are that it allows students to understand similarities and differences between them, which further increases the chance of understanding respect and tolerance. Despite most schools working towards inclusion, it is visible that segregation in schools is increasing. (Skolverket, 2021). The purpose of this study is to examine how Christian students experience how their religious tradition is being represented in the subject of religious studies. This study also investigates how students see deficiencies in current teaching, and how they would like their religious tradition to be represented in education. The students' experiences and opinions will be examined through semi-structured interviews. The goal of the study is to highlight the students' experiences of religious education, and furthermore to present the challenges that the subject of religious studies may face. The results showed that each and everyone of the respondents experienced that Christianity had a central role in teaching and was presented neutrally, just like all other religions. Finally, the respondents pointed out that teaching was fact-based and focused mostly on historical events and important dates for the religions, rather than on how the religions are understood and impact people and society.

Bilden av Islamiska staten: en analys av hur jihadiströrelsen använder sig av rörligt bildmaterial2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study deals with religious independent schools and its impact on society. The purpose of this essay has been to examine what various teachers from both religious independent schools and public schools have for perception of religious independent schools. The questions highlighted in the study is the teachers´ general view to religious independent schools, teachers´ perception of the Education Act " a denominational education, but a non- denominational teaching", and what teachers believe to be segregated or inclusive.

The study has consisted of five qualitative interviews with different teachers, where three of them work at religious independent schools, while the other two teachers work in public schools.

The study shows that there are prominent differences of approach to religious independent schools. Teachers who work at religious independent schools avert criticism of religious independent schools and argue that teaching in religious independent schools do not differ appreciably from the public schools. Instead can religious independent schools serve as a good alternative to the public school. While teachers from public schools sharply criticizes the religious independent schools and argue that these are not for everyone, but only for a specific group which can result segregation of society.

”En livsfråga? Det var en svår fråga”: En studie om ungdomars tankar om livsfrågor i religionskunskapsundervisningen2016Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis was to study young people's thoughts on religious education in high school with a focus on life questions (livsfrågor).

In order to achieve the purpose of the thesis the issue was divided into two primary issues: how do young people describe religious education in high school? And how do they reflect on the concept of life questions? And two secondary issues: do young people consider that life questions were a part of religious teaching? And do the young people consider that their life questions were a part of religious teaching?

In order to answer the issues five young people were interviewed on questions related to teaching of religion and life questions. The five youths had studied at least one religious course at secondary level.

The results showed that the five youths regarded religious education as studies about "the others" because the major focus was on facts but they nevertheless perceived religious education as interesting. All the young people reflected differently about the concept of life questions. Whether or not life questions were brought up in the classrooms varied between the participants. Only one of the participants expressed with certainty that life questions that she also viewed as her own were brought up in the classroom.

Religionslärarens roll i det proaktiva arbetet mot våldsbejakande extremism och radikalisering bland elever: En kvalitativ studie med fem lärares refletkioner2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this essay is to investigate the role of teachers of religious education in the proactive work against violent extremism and radicalization. Furthermore, the ambition is to raise awareness of how these five teachers of religious education in the Swedish upper secondary schools and primary schools in the subject of religious studies work with and implement the school's democratic mission, and to find structures to teach about radicalization, fundamentalism, pro-violence extremism and terrorism. To obtain a result, five semi-structured interviews with active religious education teachers in the upper secondary schools and the primary schools were conducted. To show the extent to which the school's democratic mission in the proactive work against radicalization and violent extremism is carried out, the collected empirical material has been analyzed based on Paulo Freire's awareness-raising pedagogy as a theoretical framework which indicates whether the interviewed teachers of religious education work according to what Freire calls the bank view or the liberating teaching. The study shows that all interviewed teachers work according to both these models. The teachers believe that it is inevitable to ignore the teaching of facts but prefer the liberating teaching. This is because all interviewed teachers believe that through dialogues and discussions, a critical thinking is created in the students. Furthermore, it appears that all teachers find it essential to create a good and open classroom climate where there is mutual acceptance of dissent. Thus, a long-term effort to create students as source-critical thinkers is fundamental.

En undersökning om utrymmet om mandeism i den svenska skolan: En kvalitativ undersökning om mandiska elevers upplevelser om religionskunskapsundervisning i skolan2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This case study examines how a group of upper secondary school students in a multiethnical suburb of Stockholm reason about the theory of evolution. The theoretical background of the thesis is postcolonial and the questions raised were how spread the creationist thoughts are in the group; in what way the backgrounds of the students are relevant to their thoughts; how the students construct the notion of the theory of evolution; how they position themselves and others in relation to the discourse of the theory of evolution; if there are any differences between students at the collage program of natural science and the collage program of social science, and in that case, what differences; and who or what inspires the young in their thoughts about the theory of evolution. To answer these questions both a survey poll and interviews were used. The result of the case study showed that a majority of the students at the investigated school has creationist ideas and that the students profiled on social science have creationist ideas in a wider extent. Another result is that the religious background seems to be relevant to develop creationist thoughts, while the variables gender, home district and educational level did not differ the creationist group from the whole group. The students accept some parts of the theory of evolution, for example the development of spices and their adaptation to the environment, but they position themselves mainly outside the discourse of the theory of evolution. The students say that there is no contradiction between religion and science but their talk reveal a discourse where the two stand as opponents. They see themselves as inferior to their teachers, scientists and atheists in general. The study shows that the interviewed were not able to tell were they got inspired to their thoughts. In short, the students starting-point is above all their religious identity and their reasoning about the evolution emanate from it.

Peacebuilding in Fragile, War-Torn Societies in Africa2023In: The Routledge International Handbook of Sociology and Christianity / [ed] Dennis Hiebert, Taylor & Francis, 2023, p. 326-338Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter covers peacebuilding in three countries in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes regions of Africa - South Sudan, Burundi, and Central Africa Republic (CAR) - characterized by fragility and protracted intra-state conflicts. The first section presents a preamble to peacebuilding in these African countries, while the second section illustrates how the warring parties have been wrestling with peace (dis)agreements in each country. The last section revisits William Zartman’s “ripeness” concept to reflect on when, or at what point, parties in protracted intra-state conflicts might be more amenable to opening peace negotiations. The active role of churches and religious organizations in peacebuilding is also highlighted. The chapter emphasizes that, though each conflict is different in important respects, the distinctive characteristics of each case are crucial determinants of the propitious moments for initiating peacebuilding. It suggests that agreements signed by the various groups failed to bring about peace because commitment to ending hostilities is contingent upon a shared vision of the benefits of a peaceful resolution, in which power is the prize to be won. And because there cannot be more than one winner in a war, taking an opportunity when a ripe moment appears is often not an attractive option.

Theoretical and methodological perspectives to studying religious and cultural diversity in Finnish, Swedish and Estonian comprehensive schools2018In: New international studies on religions and dialouge in education / [ed] Martin Ubani, Münster: Waxmann Verlag, 2018, p. 31-45Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents some of the theoretical and methodological considerations in studying religious and cultural diversity in Finnish, Swedish and Estonian comprehensive schools. The perspective arises from our experiences of carrying out an international comparative research project looking at pupils´perspectives to diversity in the educational settings and their wider everyday environments.  The data were gathered in diverse comprehensive school contexts across Sweden, Estonia and Finland. The article illustrates several important issues that are often lacking in the studies in this area and need to be accounted for when examining cultural and religious diversity in the schools and the everyday lives of children and youth.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: the main purpose was to identify in what way the clinical practice could support parents with chronically ill children. Clinical practice meaning therapist, hospital chaplain orparish priest.

Questions: the main question was “in what way do hospital chaplains support parents with chronically ill children?”. This question was then divided into five sub questions.

Theory: Pargament’s theory of religious coping from 1997 and 2000. The theory describes the religious coping process in 8 steps, 3 coping styles, 4 different coping mechanisms, 13 coping strategies and 5 main functions for religion.

Conclusions: the diverse ways the hospital chaplain supported the parents are described as phenomenon or roles. The clinical practice could focus on four main areas. 1) actively search for parents that might benefit help from the hospital chaplains, as these parents often are overlooked by other support systems 2) support the parent in re-constructing her/his faith 3) support the parent in changing coping style 4) support the parent to reconciliation and transition to her/hisnew life with the child. Pargament’s theory was adjusted to a Swedish secular context and filledwith added content. I also presented a first attempt at bridging Pargament’s framework from year1997 and from year 2000.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to present data from the first study using interviews with Swedish hajj pilgrims, conducted during 2016 and 2017 by the Institute for Language and Folklore, Gothenburg; the Museum of World Culture, Gothenburg; Södertörn University, Stockholm; and Gothenburg Univetsity. Among the questions asked within the framework of the project were, for example, how Swedish Muslims experience the hajj; how they prepare for the trip to Saudi Arabia; how the pilgrimage is organized by Swedish Muslim organizations (e.g. hajj travel agencies); whether the pilgrimage is only perceived as a religious journey; and whether the intergroup conflicts and variations that exist among Muslims effect the hajj? The last question will be addressed by focusing on how Swedish Ahmadiyya Muslims are affected by the fact that the Pakistani and Saudi states do not regard them as Muslims.

From Cursed Africans to Blessed Americans: The Role of Religion in the Ideologies of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, 1955-19682008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Up until the 19th century, religion was used as a way of legitimizing slavery in America. With the rise of the civil rights movement religion seems to have played a quite different role. This essay aims to explore the role of religion in the ideologies of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. The speeches, writings and actions of these two men have been analysed in hope that the result will contribute to the larger study of American civil rights history.

This essay proposes that both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X infused their political message with religious ideas and that they leaned on religion for support and inspiration. By analysing the discourse headed by King and X it becomes clear that in direct contrast to how religion was used during slavery, religion was used as a way of legitimizing equality (and in some cases black superiority) between races during the civil rights movement.

    Abstract [en]

The teacher Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940) is one of Sweden's most famous and beloved writers and her books have been sold in millions worldwide. She received the Nobel Prize in Literature 1909 and was selected as the first woman in the Swedish academy five years later in 1914. She grew up on the farm Mårbacka and, after her success, could buy it back and lived there until she passed away in 1940.

Among her most famous works is The Story of Gösta Berling, Herr Arne’s Hoard and Jerusalem. The latter is a novel, published in two parts in 1901 and 1902 and the narrative spans four generations in the 19th century and focuses on the family Ingmarsson and several other families from the County of Nås who, for religious reasons, emigrated to Jerusalem to join the American Colony.

To get an understanding of these emigrants, Selma Lagerlöf traveled to Jerusalem to meet and learn more about them. During the trip, Lagerlöf corresponded with her mother, Louise Lagerlöf, and it is through this correspondence that I have sought answers to the following questions:

Given the premise that Selma Lagerlöf, per her own opinion, had no knowledge of emigration of religious groups; how much can we understand that she learned about this colony while traveling, based on her correspondence?  To what extent can this correspondence detect observations and teachings concerning religion, religious practice and presumptuous religious people? To the extent that religious beliefs, internships or supposed practitioners are mentioned in the correspondence; are there any appreciable differences in conceptual usage based on how she may look at the other?

The hermeneutical explanation model used in this study as a theory and method has, through an analysis of the correspondence, conclude that her journey gave her great insight into the colonists, that she also learned a lot about other religions and its practitioners and that some valuational words in the letters reveal that she received a very positive image of the emigrants, but that she generally held a neutral description even of non-Christians.
