Kärnfamiljens status: En studie om kärnfamiljens status som ideal och norm i familjerättssekreterares arbete med familjer2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In Nuclear family as status Dennis Wijk examines if and how the nuclear family ideals and norms permeates family law secretaries work with families. The aim of the study is to investigate if the nuclear family has the status of ideals and norms in the family law secretaries practice. In order to achieve the aim of conducted four interviews with family law secretaries in Stockholm city. The interviews have been the main data collection. Theoretical concepts which are central in the study are: the nuclear family, institution, ideals, standards, and established and outsiders. By the results of the study demonstrated that family law secretaries do not meet nuclear family in its practice and it detected no direct efforts to promote such ideals. Nuclear family's status as an ideal and norm turns out to be low in the three themes of four, where the fourth indicates a high status. In the fourth theme raised by that it is first in the family law secretaries own starting points that the nuclear family is becoming a reality and generates a higher status as ideal and norm.

Hur kan ungdomar tycka att cannabis är farligt?: En studie om vad som påverkar ungdomars riskperception avseende cannabisbruk2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The proportion of young people who do not perceive any major risks with cannabis use has increased in recent years. Adolescents' perception of the risks affects whether they will choose to use cannabis or not. The purpose of this essay has been to analyze risk and protective factors that influence young people's risk perception regarding cannabis use. The main questions have been how parents, school and friends affect risk perception. The essay is based on a subjective view of risk perception, which means that not a single factor alone can explain why the adolescent has a low or high risk perception. Risk and protective factors that have been observed to decrease or increase the likelihood of cannabis use have been used to analyze the result. The material that has been used in this essay is a survey conducted by the Centralförbundet för alkohol och narkotika year 2010 among Swedish teenagers. The result has been established by using logistic regression analyzes which shows how strongly different factors are related to a low risk perception even when other factors are taken into account. Several factors linked to friends and parents have proved to have a statistically association with adolescents risk perception regarding cannabis use, this while the school doesn’t.

Contextualizing Accessibility: Interaction for Blind Computer Users2008Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Computer usage today is predominantly based on graphical interaction, where the visual presentation of information is essential both for input (hand-eye coordination when using a computer mouse), and output (seeing the information on a computer screen). This can create difficulties for blind computer users, both at an individual level when interacting with a computer, and also when collaborating with other computer users.

The work presented in this thesis has investigated interaction for blind computer users in three stages. First investigating access to information by making studies on an interactive audio-only game, drawing conclusions about auditory direct manipulation and auditory interface design. Second studying collaboration between blind and sighted computer users in two different contexts, leading to questioning of commonly expressed design principles regarding access to collaboration. Finally studying accessibility in a working environment, finding out how technology, the assistive device used by the blind person, communication with others and professional knowledge interplayed to create an accessible work environment.

Based on these empirical studies, the main conclusion from this work is a proposal of a research perspective, Assistive interfaces as cooperative interfaces. Here, the context where the interface is going to be used is in focus, and cooperative and social dimensions of interaction are acknowledged and highlighted. The design and analysis of assistive devices should be highly sensitive to the socio-interactional environment, and not just focusing on the single individual using an assistive device.

Supporting Cross-Modal Collaboration: Adding a Social Dimension to Accessibility2006In: Haptic and Audio Interaction Design: First International Workshop, HAID 2006, Glasgow, UK, August 31 - September 1, 2006. Proceedings / [ed] David McGookin, Stephen Brewster, Berlin: Springer , 2006, Vol. 4129, p. 102-110Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a study of cross-modal collaboration, where blind and sighted persons collaboratively solve two different tasks using a prototype that has one auditory and one graphical interface. The results shows the importance of context and the design of tasks for the accessibility of cross-modal collaborative settings, as well as the importance of supporting the participation in a working division of labour.

Assembling the Senses: Towards the Design of Cooperative Interfaces for Visually Impaired Users2004In: Proceedings of the 2004 ACM conference on Computer supported cooperative work (CSCW 2004), New York: ACM Press , 2004, p. 332-341Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The needs of blind and visually impaired users are seriously under-investigated in CSCW. We review work on assistive interfaces especially concerning how collaboration between sighted and blind users across different modalities might be supported. To examine commonly expressed design principles, we present a study where blind and sighted persons play a game to which the former has an auditory interface, the latter a visual one. Interaction analyses are presented highlighting features of interface design, talk and gesture which are important to the participants’ abilities to collaborate. Informed by these analyses, we reconsider design principles for cooperative interfaces for the blind.

Qualitative Aspects of Auditory Direct Manipulation: A Case Study of the Towers of Hanoi2001In: Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Auditory Display (ICAD 2001) / [ed] Jarmo Hiipakka, Helsinki: Helsinki Univ. , 2001, p. 16-20Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents the results from a qualitative case study of an auditory version of the game Towers of Hanoi. The goal of this study was to explore qualitative aspects of auditory direct manipulation and the subjective experience from playing the game. The results show that it is important to provide a way of focusing in the auditory space. Articulatory directness was also an important issue and feedback should support the movement of the objects in the auditory space.

The quest for auditory direct manipulation: the sonified Towers of Hanoi2000In: Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Disability, Virtual Reality and Associated Technologies (ICDVRAT 2000) / [ed] P. Sharkey, A. Cesarani, L. Pugnetti, & A. Rizzo, 2000, p. 75-81Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a study of an auditory version of the game Towers of Hanoi. The goal of this study was to investigate the nature of continuos presentation and what this could mean when implementing auditory direct manipulation. We also wanted to find out if it was possible to make an auditory interface that met the requirements of a direct manipulation interface. The results showed that it was indeed possible to implement auditory direct manipulation, but using Towers of Hanoi as the underlying model restricted the possibilities of scaling the auditory space. The results also showed that having a limited set of objects, the nature of continuos presentation was not as important as how to interact with the auditory space.

Man blir som man bor: En fältstudie om förortens ungdomar och deras identitetsskapande2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Förortens vardagsverkligheter: En kvalitativ studie om Spoken Word som mikropolitisk motståndsform2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Förutsättningar för inkorporation: upplevelse av möjlighet2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Conditions for incorporation – experience of possibility is a study written by Hanna Öfors. It focuses on immigrants and their experience of the possibility to be included as a part of the Swedish society. This is done, by interviewing four people who moved too Sweden as grownups and whom, relatively speaking, could be looked at as cases of satisfying incorporation,   about their experiences of incorporation. The purpose of this study is to investigate and understand how immigrants look at their incorporation process and the degree to which it is possible for them to be a part of the Swedish society. Moreover, it is meant to identify the components that are important for them to feel included in or excluded from the Swedish society.  The frame of reference that this study is based on is built on three components, capital theory, concentrated on social capital, and theories about participation, alienation and identity. The three latest terms has added as a complement to capital theory. Recent research says that partnership and marriage has a positive effect on incorporation.    The results show that an individual ought to have a large amount of social capital, in at least one field, for them to feel a part of the Swedish society.  Employment is pointed out to be an extra important factor for this possibility. It is also shown that a relationship, such as marriage, leads to an increase in social capital. The same results are also proved in earlier studies.  By finding what is needed, for an incorporation process to be satisfying, it could be possible to influence the discourse around immigration and incorporation in a positive way. Hopefully this could lead to more favorable conditions for immigrants in the future.

Ungdomars handlingsstrategier inför framtiden: En kvalitativ jämförelse mellan fyra högstadieungdomar från bostadsområden med olika socioekonomisk status2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how the connection with the foster parents and the contact with the social services affects a child during a foster care placement and later in life. Furthermore, it also examines how good connection favours a foster care placement and the contact with the social services. For the study, a qualitative method was used. Five interviews took place with adults who have, at some point during their childhood, been in foster care. Parts of Bowlbys attachment theory and Antonovskys (2010) idea of KASAM was used to analyze the study’s empirics. The result shows that all adults who got interviewed in this study felt they had good relations with the foster parents and felt safe in their presence during the time they spent in foster care. Four guidelines for a good relationship between a child and their foster parents has showed to be rules, structure, commitment and affinity. Children who feel insecure with their current relations have a harder time building new relations and will have a tough time creating good relations within the foster home. The Social Service Act demands that every child in foster care shall be assigned a social secretary (2015:982). Children who has been placed in foster care needs a social secretary that they feel they can trust, this will increase the possibility of good relations within the foster home.
