Fichte i Heliopolis: En undersökning av det intersubjektiva jaget i vetenskapsläran2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the role of intersubjectivity in the philosophy of Johann Gottlieb Fichte. For Fichte, the ultimate ground of philosophy is the infinite self-positing activity of the I. However, this self-positing activity must have as its product a determined I, and therefore it must establish a limit to the I’s original infinity. Further, such a limit is only thinkable as a relation to that which lies beyond it: the negation of the I, or the not-I.

By this characterization of the nature of the I, Fichte establishes it as a paradoxical concept that is at once infinite and finite. To solve this paradox, he introduces the concept of a “check” (Anstoβ) that puts a halt to the outward-striving activity of the I. In experiencing this check, the I is not limited by something outside of itself, which would negate its position as the ultimate ground of its own being, but rather is given the task of positing its own limit.

In Grundlage des Naturrechts, Fichte develops this idea through another concept: that of a “summons” (Aufforderung) given to the I by another subject. Since the I is characterized by containing the ground of its own being, the intersubjective relation to the other is conditioned by the I limiting itself, so that the self-grounding character of the other can be recognized. In experiencing the summons of the other, though, the I does not only posit a limit for itself, but also becomes conscious of its own nature as a free, self-positing subject. Intersubjectivity, therefore, must be considered a fundamental element of the I as such. In Fichte’s own words: “No I, no Thou; no Thou, no I.”

Fichte och Benjamin Höijer2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the relation between the conception of an act as the original ground of all knowledge and the conception of the I as self-limiting in the philosophies of Johann Gottlieb Fichte and Benjamin Höijer. By relating the philosophical project of these two thinkers to Kant’s definition of enlightenment it argues that, while both Fichte and Höijer seek to find a satisfactory refutation of scepticism, their motive for doing this is chiefly a practical rather than a theoretical one: their ambition is to show how knowledge is only possible through human freedom and independence. Thus, the scep-tical doubt about whether true knowledge of the external world is possible is transformed into a ques-tion about how the fundamentally free and infinite I can stand in a relation to a “not-I” posited beyond itself. Both Fichte and Höijer try to answer this question by arguing that such a limit of the I’s subjec-tivity must be a product of an original free act, and that it is therefore only thinkable in relation to the infinite nature of the concept of action. The main difference between their respective philosophies lies in their characterisations of this original, limit-imposing act: for Fichte, it is synonymous with the I, while for Höijer, it must necessarily precede any agent.

    Abstract [en]

In a famous passage in Ideas I, Husserl claims that the pure consciousness is to be understood as independent of anything apart from itself in order to constitute itself, and that it therefore is able exist without a world at all. This notion seems to be contradicted in many of Husserl’s other works as well as stand in conflict with the core of phenomenology itself as a descriptive science of intentional consciousness. Three years before the publication of Ideas I, Husserl held a series of lectures that were later published with the title The Basic Problems of Phenomenology. Here, in stark contrast to Ideas I, the inquiry culminates in stepping beyond the subject as self-given and immanent by instead focusing on intersbjectivity and phenomenological time-consciousness. This essay sets out to examine the relation between the transcendental subject in these two works. It is argued that, while the phenomenological epoché indeed establishes a subject that is prior to the world in the sense that it does not need to suppose the world to guarantee its own existence, Husserl’s philosophical project in The Basic Problems of Phenomenology shows the importance of going beyond such an immanent subject to uncover the full phenomenological field.

Vad är etisk kompetens?: En undersökning om fenomenet etisk kompetens och skönlitteraturens roll i etikundervisningen.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate what the phenomenon of ethical competence can mean and what function reading of fiction might mean for the development of ethical competence. Furthermore, it has also discussed what conclusions one can draw from this for ethics education in the religious studies subject.

In order to answer the essays aim, the aim has been divided into two main questions and a discussion question. The main questions were: what is ethical competence? What does the reading of fiction mean for the development of ethical competence? The discussion question was: what conclusions can be drawn from the answers from question 1 and 2 in relation to ethics education in religious studies? The basic data to answer the essay questions consists of two theories on reading and which importance fiction has. The material was then examined and analyzed with a sort of qualitative text analysis.

The results of the study show two different theories about what ethical competence can mean. The theories show different, but similar, conclusions on how the reading of fiction can be seen as a source if a person wants to develop its own ethical competence. It was also discussed whether ethical competence should be seen as part of the ethics education or not. The results of this discussion was that it’s possible to argue that the development of ethical competence of students should be seen as an integral part of ethics education as ethical competence contains elements that should be seen as part of the general education mission (fostransuppdrag) that the school in Sweden has.

"...där Adam betyder människa och Eva livgivande eller kvinna": En genus- och jämställdhetsanalys om hur kvinnor och män framställs i religionerna judendom och islam i religionskunskapsböcker för mellanstadiet2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to with a gender perspective examine how often men and women are mentioned and how they are being portrayed in the religions Islam and Judaism in textbooks made for religious studies. To examine this a quantitative and a qualitative content analysis on three textbooks have been made and the following questions have been answered. How often are men and women being mentioned in the chapters about Islam and Judaism? Can the distribution be seen as even/equal between the genders? And how are women and men being portrayed in the chapters? Are they being portrayed and talked about in an equal way?

Earlier studies have shown that it’s mostly men that are being mentioned and written about in both religious history and in textbooks made for religious studies. The religious texts are being interpreted by men and also written by and for men. This makes the man a kind of prototype for the religious person while the women have been and partly still is invisible in these contexts.

The study concludes that men are being mentioned more often than women in the textbooks, which doesn’t compare with the goals set for a quantitative gender equality. It also concludes that the men are being portrayed as the active religious man while the women is being positioned beside the men, which makes the female religious practice partly invisible. To position the women beside the men is also to give them a subordinate and an outmoded role.

    Abstract [en]

In this essay from my perspective as a furniture designer and theacher at a design college I explore the idea that design actually is (playful) play. And if not exactly play that a playfulmind is an asset when it comes to being a designer as well as an teacher. From two portrayals and throughout the essay from experience as designer I study the different concepts play, design, design-process and creativity to see what tears them apart as well what binds them together.

Musikframförandets magiska rum: Ett rum för handling tillsammans bortom vardaglig verklighet2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

By using the scientific essay and modern hermeneutic understanding as method the essay Musical performance, a space of magic examines the mental and physical room for musical performance. The focus is, as the title reveals, the sense of a higher state of interconnection which can occur between the performing artist and audience. The essay examines the musical performance as a collective act; seeing both the performer and the audience's as maneuvering actors in the room. The performance is understood as an act together.

The theoretical reflection of this scientific essay is largely based on the concept of play defined by Johan Huizinga. For an understanding of knowledge in action, practical knowledge, the essay investigate the concept of fronesis defined by Aristotle. For an understanding of collective knowledge about sensory experience, the essay search understanding in Jonna Bornemark's thoughts on a concept of judgment understood as a framework for quality built from within a practice by its actors. The essay also discusses John Dewey's thoughts on the creative process and collects experience from literature on improvisational music.

The essay contributes from a hermeneutic understanding with an experience based reflection and offer the reader a ground for continued scientific reflection on professional knowledge in music performance.

    Abstract [en]

This article explicates the meaning of the paradox from the perspective of sexual difference, as articulated by Simone de Beauvoir. I claim that the self, the other, and their becoming are sexed in Beauvoir's early literary writing before the question of sexual difference is posed in The Second Sex (1949). In particular, Beauvoir's description of Fran double dagger oise's subjective becoming in the novel She Came to Stay (1943) anticipates her later systematic description of 'the woman in love'. In addition, I argue that the different existential types appearing at the end of The Second Sex (the narcissist, the woman in love, the mystic, and the independent woman) are variations of a specific feminine, historically changing paradox of subjectivity. According to this paradox, women, in a different mode than men, must become what they ontologically "are": beings of change and self-transcendence that have to realise the human condition in their concrete, singular lives. My interpretation draws on Kierkegaardian philosophy of existence, phenomenology, and early psychoanalysis.

    Abstract [en]

Literature has a central place in Hannah Arendt’s writings. In particular, scholars continually discuss the implications of storytelling to her theory of action. This paper takes a different approach by drawing attention to an early literary essay, ”Rilke’s Duino Elegies”, which Arendt co-authored with Günther Stern (later Anders) in 1930. The paper locates the essay in the early twentieth century intellectual response to the ”break in tradition”, arguing that the construction of a poetics dramatized in the Duino Elegies is crucial for judging the originality of Arendt’s philosophical methodology, and the ontological significance of her poetic conception of praise. In this conception, meaning is to be found in things as they appear to human beings capable of using the language designating them poetically. I present my interpretation of the Arendt-Stern essay by contrasting it with Heidegger’s comment on the eighth Elegy from 1942-43 and Blanchot’s reading of Rilke from 1955.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis was to study teachers and students in primary schools thoughts on the use of the students popular culture in religious education, and to identify similarities and differences between the interviewed and how these could be understood. The purpose was further to examine what consequences popular culture’s relation to high culture (finkultur) was given in the interviewed’s reasoning.

The thesis was divided into three major issues: What opportunities and difficulties do teachers and students regard with the use of the students popular culture in religious education? What are the differences and similarities between the respondents, and how could this be understood? And the third: What are the consequences of popular culture's relation to high culture in the reasoning?

In order to achieve the questionaries, four students in ninth grade and four religious teachers in primary school were interviewed.

The result showed that both teachers and students stressed student’s popular culture as an educational opportunity. The use of popular culture contributes a higher level of interest, commitment and happiness in religious education. The teacher provided to a greater extent the difficulties with the use of the students popular culture, mainly with their lack of time and knowledge about their student’s popular consumption. Popular culture’s relation to high culture was made visible. In the teachers interviews it’s relation was revealed in their negative attitude against the students popular culture, in for example it’s lack of good values which were not considered compatible with the school’s values. In the student’s reasoning popular cultures relation to high culture became visible with their expressed concern about the popular culture which is used in their spare time, be used in a context which they were not used to.

Ethics of Relationality, Practices of Nonviolence: A Reading of Butler's Ethics2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine Judith Butler’s approach to the problem of ethics, and the ways in which she attempts to reformulate notions of morality and responsibility based on an understanding of the subject as inherently bound to others within a context of normative structures that exceed its own influence. For Butler, this bond implies that the subject’s constitution is structured within what she calls a ”scene of address,” where it emerges into a social field by being appealed to by others, and replying to that appeal by giving an account of itself. By setting out to examine the way in which she puts two influential thinkers—namely Foucault and Levinas—to work, I will examine her notion of scenes of address more closely, and try to show how it enables her to pose the problems of ethics and morality in novel ways. I will argue that her ethics should be understood as one of relationality, since it moves away from the self-sufficient, autonomous subject as the outset for ethics, towards an understanding our very being as dependent on the being of others. This, I propose, puts it in contrast with many established ways of thinking about ethics, both within the Western philosophical tradition, and in views of ethics more generally. Thus, I hope to show that Butler’s ethics constitutes a valuable resource with regard to the question of ethical responsibility. Finally, I will propose that it carries significant implications that point towards ethical nonviolence, and that these are of increasing importance to us today.

Både - och: tvetydighet och ironi i Begrebet Angest2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is an investigation into ambiguity and irony in Kierkegaard’s The Concept of Dread [Begrebet Angest]. The frequent ambiguities in Kierkegaard’s texts have been discussed by several scholars, and Kierkegaard’s interest in irony is evident not only from his master’s thesis On the Concept of Irony, but also from his other texts. The irony in Kierkegaard has especially been expounded on by Roger Poole and Jacob Bøggild, who both consider irony to be at the heart of Kierkegaardian writing. Furthermore, the ambiguity in Kierkegaard can also be considered typical for the existentialist line of philosophy in general. Finally, both of these subjects tie in to the difficult subject of Kierkegaard’s ”indirect communication”, a subject discussed at length by Poole.

The investigation falls into three parts. The first part is essentially a preparation: the concepts of ambiguity and irony are introduced, as is their relation to each other, and the discussion of these pertaining to Kierkegaard is paraphrased. An introduction to Kierkegaard’s indirect communicationis also provided.

The second part constitutes the main body of the thesis. This part consists of a reading of The Concept of Dread with special attention brought to the ambiguities of this text. These ambiguities are numerous and in most cases fundamental concepts in the book’s line of reason including things such as dread itself, sin, guilt and the demonic. This reading follows the basic layout of the book itself, interspersed with remarks and topics discussed by other scholars, notably Jonna Hjertström Lappalainen and Gordon Daniel Marino. At the end of this part, the ironic readings of Poole and Bøggild are discussed in relation to the more “direct” reading proposed previously. Such readings put even greater emphasis on the ambiguity, as the text in its entirety is ambiguous.

The third part is a tentative discussion of the conflicting accounts of Bøggild, Poole and Hjertström Lappalainen, and an attempt at reconciling these into a coherent view of The Concept of Dread. It is argued that ambiguity, while not equatable with indirect communication, is nonetheless a necessary prerequisite for communicating without compromising the individual’s subjective and concrete experience of the human condition. Finally, the Kierkegaardian notion of absolute freedom as discussed by Hjertström Lappalainen is considered in relation to the “existential concepts” fundamental to existentialist philosophy and, once again, the necessity of ambiguity is shown. The task of the ambiguous or ironic text is then to communicate the subjective, that which cannot be grasped in language, making necessary a certain “emptiness” or openness with regards to the central concepts.

    Abstract [en]

In this essay I make a comprehensive presentation of Après la finitude by Quentin Meillassoux. The basic concepts of the book are introduced and the main lines of arguments are exposed. The focus lies on the relationship between science and philosophy, understood on the basis of a presumed conflict between on the one hand what Meillassoux calls the ancestral statements of science and on the other what he calls the correlationism of modern philosophy. Finally, I discuss the response of two prominent scholars of continental philosophy, Martin Hägglund and Catherine Malabou, to the ideas developed in Après la finitude, and thustry to assess Meillassoux’s contributionto contemporary philosophy

    Abstract [en]

The concept of Bildung, sometimes translated as self-cultivation, is at the core of an influential tradition of educational thought. What is the relation between Bildung and interculturality? Drawing on Wilhelm von Humboldt and Hans-Georg Gadamer, and on so-called transformative learning theory, Bildung is interpreted as a process of transforming one’s meaning perspective in encounters with others. A meaning perspective is a set of largely implicit presuppositions underlying one’s habitual ways of thinking, feeling, and acting. Confrontation with alternative perspectives can be an opportunity to become aware of one’s own perspective, to critically assess it and to transform it. Thus conceived, Bildung is closely related to interculturality.

    Abstract [en]

Hume’s ethics is concerned not only with the metaphysical status of moral qualities but equally, if not more, with the problem of determining to what extent and under what conditions issues of moral disagreement and inquiry can be decided by rational argumentation. This paper argues that Hume’s solution to the second problem is a form of perspectivism: the rational decidability of moral issues depends on the existence of shared perspectives, or sets of assumptions and correlated dispositions to feelings, and is largely independent of the metaphysical status of moral qualities. An issue of disagreement may thus be rationally decidable among people with certain dispositions to feeling but not among others. A similar perspectivist reading is suggested for Hume’s analysis of knowledge about causes and effects.

Empati, dialog eller dialogisk empati?: Gadamer och inlevelsetanken2014Inngår i: Hans-Georg Gadamer och hermeneutikens aktualitet / [ed] Anders Burman, Stockholm: Axl Books, 2014, s. 137-169Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]
