No go-zoner, kan man säga så?: Nyhetsmediernas användning av begreppet "no go-zoner"2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Immigration in French Newspapers Post Terrorist Attacks: A study of the framing of immigration in Le Monde & Le Figaro after the Charlie Hedo attack2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the topic of immigration was framed by the two French newspapers Le Monde and Le Figaro in their political online sections during the two weeks following the terror attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in 2015. Applying frame analyses on textual articles published during this time, this paper can conclude that five frames manifested themselves. Furthermore, a high degree of political parallelism, characterized by what Robert Entman refers to as content biased news coverage, was detected that greatly distinguished the two newspapers coverage of immigration. Le Monde, commonly erred to as a left-centrist paper, never openly criticized the ruling leftist government during the time frame studied. Contrastingly, Le Figaro, commonly referred to as a right-centrist paper, was overtly sceptic towards the socialist party, and framed multiple articles arguing that the right-wing populist party Front National was unjustly treated by the left as well as arguing for the legitimacy of the right-center party UMP. Based on the theoretical approach of framing, this thesis concludes that the media culture of both Le Monde and Le Figaro display characteristics greatly influenced by their political orientations. This paper also concludes that the two newspapers’ framing of the immigration topic was directly and consequently related to actions by the controversial right-wing populist party Front National. This implies a salience of ideological orientation of the newspapers in their framing of the news framing.Whether and how this framing of the news related to the terror attacks affected the opinions of their readers would be an interesting focus for future research.

“It’s like we’ve always been walking behind men”: A qualitative study on how machismo and the Me Too- and feminist movements in Chile affect female broadcast journalists and their professional roles2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Chile is one of the many countries in Latin America affected by machismo (Torres et al 2002, p. 163-164). In the year of 2017 the Me Too-movement sparked a fire in Chilean media and the feminist movement grew bigger and stronger. These movements affected many institutions, organizations and industries. The journalism industry being one of them. The purpose of this study is to investigate how female journalists in Chile perceive themselves, these movements and their journalistic roles in the context of a country affected by machismo and movements trying to fight it. To investigate these themes a qualitative approach has been used by conducting semi-structured interviews with eight female Chilean journalists that are currently working or have worked in broadcasting. The theoretical background of this study is based on the Hierarchy of Influences model by Pamela J. Shoemaker and Stephen D. Reese (2016), which has been combined with the concept of journalistic role perceptions by Thomas Hanitzsch and Tim P. Vos (2018).

The results indicated that the majority of the women interviewed had positive opinions towards the Me Too- and feminist movements in Chile, and that these movements have also had a positive impact on Chilean society and the journalism industry. And so the effects have also been visible in the women's private and professional lives. Even though machismo and harmful patriarchal norms have been and is a part of their lives, the social structures have not gotten in the way of them feeling strong, fighting for their rights, and other women's rights in the industry. Machismo and the movements have all played important parts in how these women have taken on their journalistic roles.

Lokal journalistik i det nya medielandskapet: En kvalitativ onlinestudie av radiokanalen P4 Västmanland2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The framing of immigration by Swedish newspapers in 2009, 2015 and 20162017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Data journalism in Sweden: introducing new methods and genres of journalism into “old” organizations2013Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Data journalism is an evolving form of investigative journalism. In previous research and handbooks published on this topic, this form of journalism has been called computer assisted reporting and data-driven journalism, as well as precision, computational or database journalism.

In Sweden, this form of journalism is still fairly uncommon. Since 2011, researchers at Södertorn University have been working together with data journalists at SVT (Swedish public service television) to develop knowledge about methods and challenges. In November 2012, the project group was expanded to include five daily newspapers, Aftonbladet (national tabloid), Svenska Dagbladet (national morning paper), Norrköpings Tidningar (regional publishing house), Helsingborgs Dagblad (regional morning paper) and Mittmedia (regional publishing company), the Swedish public service radio as well as the software company, SAS. The expanded project will end in 2014.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the development of data journalism at these media companies, using action research methods. The content of this paper is based on an online survey of journalists working at the participating media companies and in-depth interviews with editors at these companies. The results indicate that, based on how this field is currently perceived by the journalists in the survey, there is a common definition of data journalism. Furthermore, the attitudes towards data journalism during the process of introducing new methods and genres of journalism into “old” organizations are correlated to the level of perceived experience in data journalism working methods. The main challenges facing the working methods of data journalism today are a shortage of time and the need for training and developing data journalism skills.

Computer assisted reporting (CAR). Datadriven journalism. Databasjournalistik. Datajournalistik.

Russian and Swedish Journalists: Professional roles, ideals and daily reality2012Inngår i: Journalism Practice, ISSN 1751-2786, E-ISSN 1751-2794, Vol. 6, nr 5-6, s. 732-743Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

To strive for autonomy is key to professional journalistic culture, although the degree of autonomy varies between countries and media systems. A survey distributed to 100 journalists in Sweden and Russia explores their views on journalistic autonomy: the professional duties of journalists, the degree of autonomy they enjoy in their day-to-day work, as well as journalists’ opinions about the development of press freedom. The findings reveal that journalists in both countries share many professional values but also feel pressures on their professional autonomy in Sweden mostly a commercial pressure and in Russia predominantly a political pressure but also the commercial interests of owners and advertisers. There are also some clear differences. Independence in daily work is less for Russian journalists and the obstacles ahead of publishing more common and they have a negative view on the development of press freedom.

    Abstract [en]

The role that age and generation play in shaping patterns of (news) media consumption is a particularly significant issue in current media studies. By virtue of the interplay of the theoretical concept of generations and the critical study of language, the article, empirically rooted in the Estonian context, seeks to outline the ways in which language reflects some media-related practices and perspectives. Analysing qualitative data from focus groups conducted in autumn/winter 2011 among Estonian media users aged 16–72, the article attempts to shed light on the complex nature of the generational consciousness that manifests itself through interaction with people of the same age and with a socially shared framework in terms of the perception of news media’s role, as well as the adoption of novel forms of media and technologies. A specific focus is on four generations who reached their ‘formative age’ in one of four possible periods (1) the post-war period, (2) the Soviet period, (3) the period of restoration of national independence, and (4) the period of transformation into a democratic society and highly technologized media culture.

The liability of politicalness: Legitimacy and legality in piracy-proximate entrepreneurship2014Inngår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, ISSN 1476-1297, E-ISSN 1741-8054, Vol. 22, nr 4, s. 408-425Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores three entrepreneurial ventures that have evolved in proximity to online piracy. In reviewing the respective cases of Spotify, Skype, and The Pirate Bay, the argument outlines the radically divergent strategies with which the entrepreneurs have sought to legitimise their ventures and underlying technologies. The article concludes that: 1) the context of practices labelled ‘pirate’ are paradigmatic examples of fields in which entrepreneurs must work exceptionally hard to legitimise themselves; 2) in this context, it is crucial that the role of law is analytically isolated from the role of institutionalised legitimacy; 3) success in legitimisation is largely dependent upon the entrepreneur’s ability to demonstrate that the venture is governed by ‘the natural order’ of the economy. It is further argued that piracy-proximate ventures may contribute to the entrepreneurship field, inasmuch as they teeter on the border of being considered too disruptive, and thus suffer from a ‘liability of politicalness’.

    Abstract [sv]

Under året förändrades tonläget i reportagen.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Becoming a circumstantial media activist Brazilian Landless Workers Movement struggle to construct arenas for communication: Brazilian Landless Workers Movement's struggle to construct arenas for communication2015Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Alternative or radical media (Downing 2000) are characterized by collective production, democratic participation and promotion of minorities’ rights to self- expression. This kind of media production is common among social movements and insurgent organizations whose members do not see themselves and their causes represented in mainstream media. This is the case of the Brazilian Landless Workers Movement (MST), which since its foundation in 1984 has been creating media outlets and producing content for different platforms. However, realizing that alternative arenas would not grant participation in the public debate, MST became also active in the area of media and communication rights in Brazil. Based on fieldwork carried out in 2013 and 2014 this article proposes a perspective to communication rights (cf. Peruzzo 2007 and 2014) that is attentive to the structural configuration of media landscape and not only to the provision of technology and production skills. In the current context were technology enabled activism has become the focus of research; this study shows that collective action and promotion of structural change are still relevant. Because the possibility to express discontentment and organize through digital media does not necessarily mean that those at the margins will be represented (cf. Fraser 2009) in the public sphere.

    Abstract [en]

Alternative or radical media are kinds of media production common among social movements whose members do not see their causes represented in mainstream media. This is the case of the Brazilian Landless Workers Movement (MST), which since 1984 has created media outlets and produced content for different platforms, later becoming active in the area of media and communication rights in Brazil. Based on fieldwork carried out in 2013 and 2014, this article proposes that a perspective of communication rights is attentive to the structural configuration of the media landscape and not only to the provision of technology and production skills. This study shows that collective action and promotion of structural change are still relevant alongside new technologies.

    Abstract [en]

This study looks into communicative processes and media practices among members of a subaltern social movement. The aim is to gain an understanding of how these processes and practices contribute to symbolic cohesion in the movement, how they develop and are socialized into practices, and how these processes and practices help challenge hegemonic groups in society. These questions are explored through a qualitative study, based on fieldwork and interviews, of a subaltern social movement. The empirical object of the study is the Brazilian Landless Workers Movement (MST), which was founded in 1984 to promote agrarian reform and defend the rights of rural workers in Brazil.

At the macro-level, the discussion addresses social realities marked by the meta-processes of globalisation, neo-liberalisation, and mediatisation. Against this background, the experiences of MST militants and of the movement as a whole help us to understand how different communicative processes play a role in the ways people experience globalisation, neo-liberalisation, and mediatisation in their daily lives. Departing from an understanding of communication as a process that structures practices (mediated and non-mediated), this study questions the media-centric understanding of communication, arguing that media practices are created through appropriation processes.

The results show that communicative processes are crucial to reinforcing values and symbologies associated with the rural worker identity. There is also a high level of reflexivity about media practices and an understanding that they must serve the principles of the collective. As a consequence, the movement seeks to maintain control over media, routinely discussing and evaluating the adoption and use of media. The interviews show ambivalence towards the alleged dialogic and organisational potential of digital media and to the adaptability of these media to the MST’s organisational processes. Through observation, it is possible to conclude that media have an instrumental function, as opposed to a structural function, in the processes of social transformation engendered by the MST.

Watchdogs or influential political players? The blurring line between editorializing and informing in Argentinean and Brazilian news media2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The watchdog role of the press has been a widely accepted concept in political communication for decades. According to this view, by monitoring the conduct of governments, news media play a regulatory role that is vital to democracy, such that their independence from political actors enables them to consider different sources of information and perspectives on an issue and present a balanced coverage to the public, and the quality of their news is defined by rigorous fact-checking, a focus on information rather than infotainment, and due attention to the complexity of the issue covered (including adequate discussion of context, causes and consequences). This view, however, is challenged by the current Latin American scenario, in which the boundaries between editorial line and information are blurred in connection with the engagement of media holdings in society as commercial and political actors with their own interests.  In this paper we approach the problem by way of a comparison of the reporting by Brazilian and Argentinian printed news outlets of two recent stories involving political personalities in government in both countries. . We a) analyze the quality of their respective coverage and b) establish similarities and differences in their approaches. We then compare this coverage with that of four smaller-scale news media outlets (Página/12 daily newspaper and bimonthly magazine Acción in Argentina, and weekly newspaper Brazil de Fato and online newspaper Brasil 247 in Brazil) that are not components of media conglomerates, analyzed following the same approach. Findings of this exploratory study indicate that the coverage of dominant news media outlets fails to meet the quality standards considered a hallmark of watchdog journalism, and reveal commonalities in their approaches to framing the stories under scrutiny. These commonalities call for further comparative investigation of the production of political news by dominant media players in the region. Moreover, our findings illustrate the use of newsmaking to advance specific interests rather than inform the public, and indicate the need to rethink the location of the watchdog role in democracies affected by media concentration. If dominant media groups use their news outlets to advance specific interests and therefore play a powerful role in the democratic game other than duly informing citizens, where should the watchdog role lie?

Between opportunities and threats – an analysis of Brazilian Landless Workers’ movement experiences with new media technologies2016Inngår i: OBS - Observatorio, ISSN 1646-5954, E-ISSN 1646-5954, nr SI, s. 035-053Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Recent discussions and research about the uses of digital social media platforms by social movements and protest organizations have raised questions about threats and challenges represented by these technologies. There is also a debate on whether digital social media platforms can contribute to establish and strengthen long-standing oppositional groups and structural change. In this context, this article analyses how the Brazilian Landless Workers Movement (MST) experiences and views the use of digital social media platforms in its communicative processes. Based on interviews and observations, the article shows how MST militants present ambivalent views towards platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and towards the dynamics of digital communication. Conclusions point that the main concern is threat to the organic collective character of the movement posed by individualistic digital social media platforms. Different from contemporary protest organisations, MST sees a clear separation between the movement and its media. The goal is to appropriate of and control media technologies, which brings many difficulties when dealing with digital social media platforms.

    Abstract [en]

This Master Thesis investigates how the Swedish Newspapers Expressen and DN are using sources and expertise in their portrayal of honour related violence. Which sources are they using, and in which way are these sources being used? 40 articles written between January 1 2017 – March 31 2018 have been chosen for a qualitative analysis step one. In the second step 10 articles have been chosen for a deeper analysis. In the third step three journalists have been interviewed about the articles they have been written in the subject honour-related violence. The method frame analysis have been used. The results of the qualitative analysis shows for example that it is many of the articles that have a strong dramaturgy, and that the use of emotive words are different in various type of articles. The study also shows that the use of sources and expertise are different in DN than in Expressen, and that the use of sources and expertis are remarkable different from other kinds of articles in journalism.

    Abstract [sv]

The role of the female Balinese journalist: A qualitative field study covering the complex role of women journalists in the Balinese society2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The Hindu island of Bali is a patriarchal society and the Balinese people’s everyday tasks are woven together with their many cultural and religious rituals and actions. Bali is one of the most famous and most visited islands of the wide spread island nation of Indonesia. Here, the concept of cultural tourism is established – a concept which regards the rich Balinese culture as a tourist draw, something that motivates the Balinese people to safeguard their regional identity and culture. These strives although tends to collide with the strives towards a more gender equal society. This study investigates the role of the Balinese female journalist – both within the newsrooms and in the society in general. It is based mainly upon in-depth interviews with women journalists in Bali. The theoretical framework orbits around a gendered approach to the theory of Journalism Culture, which combines concepts such as doxa and social fields to explain the dynamic and dichotomizations within the professional field. Masculine domination theories are also used. The results of this study reveal a complex situation where the female journalists perform a challenging balance act in order to perform their very best both at work, at home and in the society.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to analyze some recent changes in labor market policy and labor law in order to show how changes in this kind of regulation have had consequences for work in the media industries. Even though a considerable amount of research has been performed on media work during the last decade, it is quite uncommon within critical media studies to relate such research to policy and regulation. The point I want to make with this article is that the increasing precariousness and de-professionalization that are occurring within media work, as documented in previous research, must be understood against a background of policy change and political decisions, rather than only being seen as an effect of economic or technological shifts within the media industry. This article hence contributes to the current knowledge of the relationship between labor market policy and the media industry in Sweden; as such, it more generally contributes to the current knowledge of such a relationship in a Nordic welfare state, with all its specifi cities and differences from other parts of Europe and the world. Nevertheless, the results and discussions in this article are related – and relevant – to more general European tendencies in the area of labor market policy as it relates to the media.

    Abstract [en]

In music radio broadcasting, radio personalities (presenters, hosts, DJs) have traditionally been of critical importance to programming success. In this article, I seek to add to the understanding of contemporary developments within radio, especially music radio, through focusing on the presenter from a political economy perspective. How do new business models and technologies affect the performances and forms of talk developed by presenters in contemporary radio? What new roles are assigned to presenters in commercial music radio? How are work practices and labor relations affected? The article shows how media convergence has impacted the work of radio personalities in traditional broadcasting.

With what seems like decades of debate behind us, low-risk, high-budget, high exposure releases are still seen as a threat to creativity, innovation and health of the game industry as a whole. This exploratory pilot study aims to evaluate methods and create instruments which can be used to measure and compare the levels of differentness contained within the AAA and Indie releases. The case studies and surveys performed within this study are assessed as viable instruments for future, confirmatory studies, but with serious limitations outside of the chosen data sample.

    Abstract [en]

This article discusses knowledge production in game studies by exploring notions of emotion, closeness and (queer) desire in new media ethnography. It uses field notes and experiences from an ethnographic study of the online game World of Warcraft. As opposed to the kind of fieldwork where being, living, and staying in the field is the only option, new media ethnography brings with it the possibility of moving through different locations and bodies to the point where the borders between them may start to blur. The text positions itself within this very uncertainty to investigate its consequences for ways of knowing online game cultures.

Drawing on the body of ethnographic work interrogating erotic subjectivity and desire in the field, the discussion makes use of personal experiences – in particular an in-game as well as out-of-the game love affair - as potentially important sources of knowledge. Was it her, regardless of the game? Was it her through the game? Or was it the game ‘‘itself ’’? The article provides the story of a particular way of being introduced to and of falling for a game, a woman, and the ways in which these two were intensely connected. Set against the backdrop of ‘‘the affective turn’’ in cultural and feminist theory, and in making visible how desire may circulate through game spaces, the article argues for an articulation of desire as intimately related to technology; of desiring technology and of technological, or perhaps technologized desires.

Glitch, genus, tillfälligt avbrott: Femininitet som trasighetens teknologi2016Inngår i: Lambda Nordica: Tidskrift om homosexualitet, ISSN 1100-2573, nr 1-2, s. 23-45Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Technologies always implicate their own failures, breakdowns, and glitches. The purpose of this article is to develop an understanding of gender in general – and femininity in particular – as something fundamentally technological, and, as such, broken. Drawing on the technological undercurrent in current posthumanist feminist theory, arguing for a re-introduction of technologies in the midst of feminist posthumanist critique, the author puts into play a vocabulary of malfunctioning, broken, vulnerable technologies of gender. In particular, the term “glitch” is put to use to account for machinic failures in gender within the digital domain. By using glitch as a way of theorizing gender, the article is a dual contribution to digital media studies and feminist theory in a technological vein. Glitch is the spinning wheel on the computer screen, the delay between a command given and its execution. Etymologically, glitch (possibly) derives from the Yiddish word glitsh, meaning a “slippery place” or “a slip.” Glitch signals the slipperiness of something or someone off balance and a loss of control. It usually refers to a sudden unexpected event, a surge of current or an illegitimate signal that breaks the flow of energy, information, and affect. Glitch is, fundamentally, a struggle with binary code. Gender is a similar struggle to cope with binaries, with a loss of binaries, and about what happens when the vulnerability of the system is revealed. On this side of glitch, the tendency is toward hesitation and anticipation, irritation and annoyance, as well as pain and anxiety in the face of technologies and bodies that skip, crash, or get stuck. The default mode of gender is technological failure, and cis-gender normativity – what the author calls gender “high fidelity” – an unobtainable ideal of impossible perfection. If to glitch is to slip, to stutter, to stumble, gender high fidelity is to slip by unnoticed. In contrast to the notion of cis-gender normativity as a desire to cover or remove “noise,” to clear the channel, glitch is that which infiltrate, make dirty, and ultimately put pressure on the norms and ideals that structure gender as pure, clear, cold, binary code. In this sense, glitch is also about a perceived beauty in crashing and skipping, holding an intriguing critical, aesthetic, activist potential. In the hands of glitch artists, circuit breakers, and gamers, but also queers, and trans-performers, glitch becomes a celebration of the beauty of malfunction and gender-technological fragility.

This paper develops an understanding of gender as something fundamentally technological, and as such broken. Drawing on the technological undercurrent in current posthumanist feminist theory, it puts into play a vocabulary of malfunctioning, broken, vulnerable technologies, and in particular uses the term ‘glitch’ to account for machinic failures in gender within the digital domain. As an intriguing example of the technologies of (trans)gender, the core example consists of the social media presence and public transition of Isabella Bunny Bennett — a musical performer and a member of the U.S.-based band Steam Powered Giraffe. Drawing on how glitch is understood as an accidental error and a critical potential in aesthetic practices, the article is a contribution to what recently has been coined ‘glitch feminism.’

Queer disconnections: Affect, break, and delay in digital connectivity2018Inngår i: Transformations, ISSN 1444-3775, E-ISSN 1444-3775, nr 31Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, I theorise the intricate relation between technology and affect by considering questions of digital vulnerability – of disconnections, breaks, and delays – as a way of rethinking our affective attachments to digital devices. By extension, I also connect this argument with a framework of queer theory, as an opportunity to think differently about relations through questions of technological ruptures and deferrals. My bassline for this endeavour is the idea of the break as formative for how we can both sense and make sense of digital connectivity, in so far as the break has the potential to bring forth what constant connectivity means, and how it feels. Similarly, the break can potentially make tangible relational norms around continuous, coherent, and linear ways of relating and connecting, and thus provide alternative models for ways of being with digital devices, networks, and each other. If constant connectivity provides us with a relational norm of sorts, then disconnection could function as a queer orientation device with the potential of creating openings for other ways of coming together, and other ways of staying together.

    Abstract [en]

In the midst of the affective networks of contemporary digital cultures, something seemingly of the opposite order is taking shape. It is a culture that contrasts speed with slowness, displaces the new with the old and the used, and replaces supposedly immaterial streams of data with highly material, tactile technologies, materials and fabrics. This chapter turns to steampunk cultures as compelling examples of a contemporary affective investment in the analog, coupled with intense digital connectivity. Drawing on affect theory in a neo-materialist vein, the author formulates a critique of Brian Massumi’s notion of the superiority of the analog and suggests that steampunk, rather than being understood as analog nostalgia, is more aptly understood in terms of the transdigital. The term transdigital accounts for analog passions that are shaped through the digital in ways that concretely activate, but also move across the borders of, or beyond the digital. Steampunk, rather than merely being a return to a bygone era, is a re-consideration, or transing, of the (digital) present. Within this chapter, steampunk is used as an especially intriguing example of a broader tendency toward transdigital modes of using and sensing media in contemporary media landscapes.

    Abstract [sv]

Shameless hags and tolerance whores: feminist resistance and the affective circuits of online hate2018Inngår i: Feminist Media Studies, ISSN 1468-0777, E-ISSN 1471-5902, Vol. 18, nr 4, s. 643-656Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores shamelessness as a feminist tactic of resistance to online misogyny, hate and shaming within a Nordic context. In our Swedish examples, this involves affective reclaiming of the term “hagga” (hag), which has come to embody shameless femininity and feminist solidarity, as well as the Facebook event “Skamlös utsläckning” (shameless extinction), which extends the solidarity or the hag to a collective of non-men. Our Finnish examples revolve around appropriating derisive terms used of women defending multiculturalism and countering the current rise of nationalist anti-immigration policy and activism across Web platforms, such as “kukkahattutäti” (aunt with a flower hat) and “suvakkihuora” (“overtly tolerant whore”). Drawing on Facebook posts, blogs and discussion forums, the article conceptualizes the affective dynamics and intersectional nature of online hate against women and other others. More specifically, we examine the dynamics of shaming and the possibilities of shamelessness as a feminist tactic of resistance. Since online humor often targets women, racial others and queers, the models of resistance that this article uncovers add a new stitch to its memetic logics. We propose that a networked politics of reclaiming is taking shape, one using collective imagination and wit to refuel feminist communities.

Gender and Sexuality in Online Game Cultures: Passionate Play2012 (oppl. 1)Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

How do gender and sexuality come to matter in online game cultures? Why is it important to explore "straight" versus "queer" contexts of play? And what does it mean to play together with others over time, as co-players and researchers?

Gender and Sexuality in Online Game Cultures is a book about female players and their passionate encounters with the online game World of Warcraft and its player cultures. It takes seriously women’s passions in games, and as such draws attention to questions of pleasure in and desire for technology.

The authors use a unique approach of what they term a "twin ethnography" that develops two parallel stories. Sveningsson studies "straight" game culture, and makes explicit that which is of the norm by exploring the experiences of female gamers in a male-dominated gaming context. Sundén investigates "queer" game culture through the queer potentials of mainstream World of Warcraft culture, as well as through the case of a guild explicitly defined as LGBT.

Academic research on game culture is flourishing, yet feminist accounts of gender and sexuality in games are still in the making. Drawing on feminist notions of performance, performativity and positionality, as well as the recent turn to affect and phenomenology within cultural theory, the authors develop queer, feminist studies of online player cultures in ways that are situated and embodied.

Ethics within Journalistic Cultures in Spain and Sweden: A study on text and images from mainstream media online digital editions2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The topic of men’s violence against women has become visible in the recent years in the Western world, thanks to Social Media Network campaigns and digital news articles reporting these cases. The factors which affect or delimit journalist’s writings from different countries and their way of ‘doing’ journalism, might rely on the journalistic ethical boundaries within the journalistic cultures journalists inhabit.

I explore and compare in this thesis the performative ethical action of journalists emerging from their writings and between the journalistic cultures of Spain and Sweden. Eighteen articles are analysed in a comparative and cross-national manner (Esser et al. 2012; Hanitzsch et al. 2011; Weaver 1998) helped by the Three Dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis model (Fairclough 1992/3; 1995)  and Semiotics (Wang 2014; Barthes 1957, 1963, 1964). ‘Diffraction’ (Barad 2007; Haraway 1997, 2004) is employed  as complementary perspective to reflect critically on differences, revealing where and how these materialize in regard to ethics within journalistic cultures.

The study  finds and concludes  that the performative ethical action of the journalist differs in regard to crime-news reported in each country. Detailed information of the parties involved in sexual violence is written in Spanish news-articles more often than in those from Sweden. The approach to these crimes seem to be framed by the journalistic ethical boundaries, journalistic cultures and personal ethical choices existing in both countries. These ethical ideas manifest by actions  -the published journalistic text - are relative and contextual. The cases told are part of the social realities of both countries, but are being experienced and performed (in writing) in a different manner also in terms of journalistic dimensions.

The information presented to the news consumer in both written and visual form, differ or it is very similar between these countries, depending if it comes from mainstream ‘quality’ or ‘tabloid’ media outlets, but neutral images to illustrate the news-articles are the shown by both. Whereas the selected Spanish medias could be framed under a professional and relative ethical approach, the Swedish would fall under the category of professional and idealistic ethics. The similarities are that journalists from both countries keep-on informing on cases of men’s violence against women within the limits of  journalistic ethics and seem to be important key-actors producing information, culture and journalistic culture they inhabit while disseminating these stories.

Challenges facing the profession of advertising in the digital age: An empirical study of Swedish advertising professionals2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates how Swedish advertising professionals experience their work in the digital age. Findings from semi-structured qualitative interviews conducted with 15 people are organized using the concept of “media logic” re-interpreted by Mark Deuze, which covers four aspects of media work: institution, technology, organization and culture. The institution feature covers three developments occurring at the industry level, which are concentration, fragmentation and convergence. How these trends determine the way advertising professionals work is the main topic of this section. The findings show that especially due to extensive pressures from shifts of globalization and digitalization in recent years, an ongoing power struggle is taking place in all three institutional trends. The second feature is technology, in which the focus is to understand how technology shapes the way professionals interact with consumers. Interviewees were well aware of the increasing need to construct an interactive and participatory environment for brands and consumers. However, one should not be naïve and celebrate the powerful role of the consumers, nor assume that all advertising agencies are fully capable of harnessing digital technology. Organization is the third feature, where attention is paid to how professionals organize their projects and work styles. In advertising agencies, a major transformation was evident in the creative department where technologists who understand digital are becoming crucial assets next to art directors and copywriters. The last feature is culture, which examines how professionals perceive the cultures of production that influence the final advertising product. Many referred to positive aspects such as a flat and non- hierarchical culture promoting better collaboration. On the other hand, some interviewees indicated the misrepresentation of gender and ethnicity as problematic. These four features function to critically assess the challenges that lay ahead for Swedish advertising professionals in the digital age.
