Identitetens rum: En studie av relationen mellan plats och identitet i Jean Rhys Wide Sargasso Sea2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

My aim with this essay is to examine the relationship between identity positions and spatial positions in Jean Rhys novel Wide Sargasso Sea (1966). Through this I wish to show how Wide Sargasso Sea problematize the analytical cathegory "women", as well as classic western canon, and feministic eurocentric readings of the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte to which Wide Sargasso Sea correspond.

Själviska gener och svarta hål: Metaforer, liknelser och jämförelser i Dagens Nyheters vetenskapsjournalistik2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to perform a comparative study of first a pedagogical/rhetorical and then a therapeutic method, to help students overcome their speech anxiety. My choice stayed at focusing on the academic world and the benefits offered to mainly students. I have chosen two institutions with long experience of work with speech anxiety: Instutionen of Swedish, rhetoric and journalism at Södertörns Högskola and Student Health at Uppsala University. I want to find the advantages and disadvantages of the two universities and in no way define what is more favorable.

    Abstract [en]

In this thesis I discuss the adaption of the speaker to the audience, and suggest a radical re-imagining of both the act of adaption and the reasons why adaption is necessary. My main purpose is to introduce social complexity into what I see as the pivotal point of both classic and modernrhetoric and thereby create new possibilities for future research.

I accomplish this by modifying the rhetorical concept of doxa, moving from Pierre Bourdieu's separation of doxa and habitus – the incorporated form of shared beliefs and values – to an integrated view based in Manuel DeLanda's use of Gilles Deleuze & Félix Guattari's concept of the assemblage. In this way I formulate a notion of doxa that emerges from social interaction while at the same time shaping and regulating it. My notion of doxa is thus inseparable from the actions of the individuals participating in it, shaping both discourse and social life.

I also introduce a separation between those who hear a speech and it's audience. I argue that the speaker's main motivation for adapting her/his speech to the hearers is a social one, as the speaker in fact turns the hearers into an audience. In this the speaker not only adapts herself/himself but actually, through the use of doxa, adapts the audience, thus shaping the hearers' perception not only of the speech but of the world.

Following this I discuss why doxa is central to this process, and how the speaker by using doxa also takes part in reproducing it. I argue that it is impossible for the speaker to address her/his words to the actual hearers in the actual context of the speech, and therefore the speaker must rely on doxa in order to make an audience out of the hearers. Further, I describe the ways in which this constitutes a power over the hearers on the speaker's part, and some of the implications this idea has for rhetorical theory.

Last, I briefly discuss how my notion of doxa, and the aforementioned impossibility of knowing the hearers and the context, also affects the work we (can) do as critics and students of rhetoric. I argue that we need to adopt a program similar to that Donna Haraway suggests in her essay Situated Knowledges, one of engaging the objects of our studies as active participants in a dialogue, even capable of tricking us. I then lay out a few ideas for future studies in the social complexities of rhetoric, finishing with the observation that discourse and the physical world are inseparably intertwined.

    Abstract [sv]

Prostitute or Artist?: Stereotype and Authenticity in Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay will explore the writer Arthur Golden’s attitude towards the figure of the geisha in the novel Memoirs of a Geisha. Does he present a positive view of a geisha or is his attitude critical? In addition, I will attempt to answer the question of whether the novel challenges or reinforces the received stereotypes about the geisha and their unique way of life. For these purposes, a comparison to John Gallagher’s research on the history of the geisha and Davidson OʼConnell’s sociological insights about prostitution and brothels. This essay will show, that Golden does not entirely follow the stereotypes the West has of this unique culture. Rather, he surprises the readers by including some accurate historical facts about the geisha and their unique lifestyle in his novel. In this sense, arguments occurs, of Golden playing around with the received stereotypes.

    Abstract [en]

This work examines how the aesthetics of Japanese actor and playwright Zeami Motokiyo (1346-1443) offers insight into the value of the unseen elements in art, specifically in the art of acting. What acting makes appear is likened to a vessel, which creates an empty space of what doesn’t appear. This non-appearing element is at the same time what gives the vessel its function. Nō theater is described as an art of suggesting, giving a background to Zeami’s theories. The importance of the tangible in Zeami’s aesthetics is underscored in a discussion of the technique, beauty, specificity, and variation implied by the principals of two basic arts, monomane, and hana. Then, the way the actor according to Zeami can make use of the unseen to fascinate the spectator is thoroughly investigated, relating it among other things to the question of emotion in western theory of acting, and the japanese concept of yūgen. Finally, Zeami’s concept of hana is described as relying on both what appears and what doesn’t appear, and the relevance of hana as a definition of the value of art is emphasized.

Försvarsministerns försvar: En studie i kriskommunikation2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A politician on the peak of his career suddenly sees himself in the middle of not one or two, but five different crisis, that demand a fitting response and a well planned crisis management strategy. While focusing on ethos and its development, the following paper analyses the communicative strategies used by Germany's ex-minister of defense, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg. Within his one and a half year tenure he had to handle continuing accusations against policy and character. Guttenberg, who in many eyes was seen as Germany's most popular politician and whose ethos, therefore, prior to the first crisis could be described as strong, is loosing his trustworthiness among the military and other politicians the longer each crisis continues.

The purpose of this study is to identify the communicative pattern of Mr. Guttenberg, which in the end lead to his resignation, while his popularity continues to be strong. With theories like Benoits apologia strategies, Bitzers rhetorical situation and Ryans kategoria and apologia speechset, the analysis of articles of the German mass medium ”Bildzeitung”, clearly mirrors Guttenberg’s tendency to react offended to personal accusations. While being able to handle accusations against his policy, this continuing communicative mistake provides an opportunity for his critics.

Artisten i vardagsrummet: Gränsöverskridande och samförstånd i det moderna genombrottets dramatik: Leffler, Benedictsson och Stéenhoff2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Anne Charlotte Leffler, Victoria Benedictsson and Frida Stéenhoff were all part of the Modern Breakthrough in Swedish literature. By utilizing Jürgen Habermas theoretical works on communicative action, and Nancy Fraser’s supplementary reading of his theory, this essay makes clear that the authors’ struggle for an understanding and a rethinking of social norms in their plays Skådespelerskan (1873), Romeos Julia (1888) and Lejonets unge (1896) can be read as a contribution to the public debate. Dialogue has a key function for female authors during the Modern Breakthrough. Women and mens’ possibilities to take part in conversation and argument as equals, requires the professional woman’s transgression and access to the privileges of both public (State) administration – “system”, and world of everyday life – “lifeworld”. As oppositional authors, Leffler, Benedictsson and Stéenhoff took advantage of the literary public domain, in this case the theatre. The theatre as public sphere had a more effective capacity to affect its audience than fiction. The plays were written and staged in a cultural period that, compared with the present one, in a greater sense influenced public opinion. The theatre was a powerful part of the public debate, and this debate involved parties from both on-stage and off-stage positions.

At the theatre Leffler, Benedictsson and Stéenhoff turned the private into politics. Their powerful contribution to the public debate were directed specifically towards the bourgeois audience. They carried on a controversy concerning the notion of the bourgeois family by showing scenarios that raised objection to its idealistic point of view. The bourgeois living room was exposed on stage. Conflicts related to the private sphere were brought up as a theme in a public sphere and by so means were incorporated into the public debate, which at that time was dominated by men. The plays mirrored the audience and the authors’ strategies were based upon the remodeling power inherent in conversation and argumentation. Thereby, the audience were confronted with an alternated reflection of themselves. This reflection should be read as a problematic representation of the writing of history. The alternate mirroring brought in itself forward an argument that emphasized why a new reflection was necessary.

Skådespelerskan, Romeos Julia and Lejonets unge examine female artists in a bourgeois environment. Through the artist the structures that maintain bourgeois ideals are exposed and questioned, but first and foremost the artist show that communicative action between men and women was insufficient. The androcentric order did not acknowledge women and men as equals, in accordance with that, the possibility of conversation, in the sense of Habermas, came to nothing. Under such circumstances an understanding between men and women could not be reached. Love within the institution of marriage also suffered since it could not be founded in acknowledgement as long as the structure maintained. Saga and Adil, the main characters in Lejonets unge, personify, on the other hand, Stéenhoffs ideas of what is being needed to change the androcentric structure. They are citizens of the future.

My focus is on human action (in an Aristotelian sense) in the plays, the way characters stage themselves and bring the plot forward, shed light upon their possibilities and limitations in proportion to each other as men and women. My analysis thereby contrasts with the greater part of earlier research. I give prominence to the connection between psychological conflict and social position/role. In Skådespelerskan, Romeos Julia and Lejonets unge all of the characters’ psychological conflicts are based in gender issues, the consequences of being a man or woman in the 18th century, rather than explicit existential matters.

Metaforer: När ordet betraktas som metafor2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The metaphor has been among us since a very long time, but despite over 1.000 years of reflection it is still uncertain how one should understand the concept. There are few, if any, doubts how to understand the definition of metaphor, but is it possible to find a real distinction between the metaphorical and the non-metaphorical? In this essay I seek an answer to when a metaphor is a metaphor or when it is instead a generally accepted concept of how something actually is. I will use previous research on the topic from Aristotle, Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul Ricoeur and George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. These persons have given me a wide perspective and approach to the metaphor – and when a word should be considered as a metaphor or not. Through deep discussion on these theories I work out my own view on the issue: It is not the words themselves that are metaphors; it is we, in combination with the context, discourse and expressions that determines the metaphor and when it shall be considered as a metaphor.

    Abstract [en]

Weekly lifestyle magazines constitute an important role for many young people these days. Their purpose is to inform and entertain a broad public within subjects such as fashion, friends, relationships, men and beauty. Frida and Veckorevyn are two big magazines that have a big influence on young women. One subject that frequently occurs is articles about men, written by women. This study focus on how (with which qualities and weaknesses) these women choose to subscribe men. The purpose with the study is also to investigate if there occurs any important differences between these two magazines. The study includes analysis methods such as cluster criticism, rhetoric analysis and narrative analysis. The theory of this study is based on Kenneth Burkes vision about terministic screens, combined with a constructivism and hermeneutics point of view.

The results of the analysis showed that there are some differences between Frida and Veckorevyn and their way of describing men. Frida describes the men in a more static way, but with a mix of positive and negative qualities. Veckorevyn uses a more detailed and analysing way to describe the men. An interesting result was that the positive descriptions represented the majority of all the words that described the men, but the negativity still shined through. In the concluding part of the study I discuss these important results.

    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to examine how the synthetic non-human subjects, EDI and Legion, are constituted in terms of their bodies, gender, desire and emotion, in the gaming series Mass Effect. In a close-gaming method I also want to explore in which way the gamer can effect or even change the expressions of the body, gender, desire, and emotion made by the synthetic non-human subjects. In order to do this I use Judith Butlers and Sara Ahmeds queer theory, and Donna Haraways cyborg feminism. I concluded that EDI embraces her embodiments and is given a highly sexualized female body, being more of a woman than a machine. While Legion is rather embracing disembodiment and is given a non sexualized, androgynous male body, being more of a machine than a man. The gamer can decide whether EDI should have a romance with a human in the game or not, but the gamer cannot in the same way decide whether or not Legions and EDIs subjectivity will be recognized as human subjectivity or at least almost-human subjectivity.

Känner jag igen mig?: Etnisk identifikation i barnböcker sett ur ett retoriskt perspektiv2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine at how to portray characters in the stories and narratives which depicts one of these children's books and if they really have something to ethnicity and its identification to be done.

The Research questions is: What are the different identification markers given, to the reading child in the books, which might indicate that the story depicts people of different ethnicities? How are the characters portrayed in the story and which role is assigned to the main character? What story is portrayed and is it relevant to an identifier can occur?

The conclusions of the five children's books shows that it is important with identifications markers, to show that there are different ethnicities. For example the analysis revealed the specific features of the illustrations and how the books portrayes someone with a different ethnicity and cultural background as something exotic.

In the texts, the analysis showed how it occurred ethnic differences, by explicitly demonstrating differences between the characters. It was found that the characters were produced mostly as good, happy, curious, suspicious and unsympathetic. Common to all the main characters was that they had been placed, in one for them unusual context and that they were trying to assimilate to the new situations.

Depictions consisted of realism and fiction. What emerged here was that most of the stories themselves were not carrying identification purposes, most of the stories needed help with the identification markers from the illustrations, so that the reading child could understand the themes it was about.

The methods used in the studies are narratology, semiotics and critical discourse analysis. In particular, I looked at the propositions, inferences, icon, index and symbol.

    Abstract [en]

In this essay I want to investigate how the poodle strategy affects a person’s credibility when he or she uses it. The poodle strategy is a strategy, which someone uses when he or she is scrutinized by the media. It’s primary purpose is to suppress further media coverage but it is also a strategy for defending oneself and hence rescuing one’s reputation either as a private person or as an official.

    The essay’s research questions are:

    • How has the strategy been applied for defensive purposes and what are the results?
    • To which extent can the Stasis theory and Benoit’s theory on Apologia be connected to the strategy?
    • Does the strategy affect the user’s credibility?

To answer these questions four cases from the political sphere in Sweden where persons have been said to have “done a poodle” have been analyzed. In order to analyze the strategy and to judge how successful it has been these cases have been connected to the Stasis theory, Benoit’s theory on apologia and theories about credibility and trust.

Additionally this essay investigates how applicable the Stasis theory is as a model for analyses and how relevant analyses based on stasis theory are today. Furthermore it investigates wheteher a fusion of the Stasis theory and Benoit´s theory on Apologia can be profitable.

An important conclusion is that the poodle strategy is a strategy, which is more complicated than one might first think. Whether the strategy works depends on a series of factors; for example the person’s initial credibility (or ethos) and the morality of the actions. These factors need to be assessed before the strategy is put into use.

Studieverkstan politik och praktik: Lägesrapport och probleminventering2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay explores some of the circumstances under which the extensive changes in central Stockholm in the mid 20th century were documented, primarily by means of photographic pictures. In a certain sense, "Klarakvarteren" stands as a symbol of  modernity, and in certain books featuring these documentary photographs "Klarakvarteren" has, as such, been epitomized as the centre of modern Stockholm following the construction of the new Central station in the 1870s, in addition to being the obvious location of numerous editorial offices and many hotels and cafés. As a symbol of modern city life in Stockholm, "Klarakvarteren" also relates to another key feature of modernity: the photographic image. Following the total reconstruction of the city centre, "Klarakvarteren" in this day essentially consists of memory images in the form of texts or photographs. In examining a central photographic book featuring an extensive essay by author Per Wästberg as well as pictures by Lennart af Petersens, long in service as photographer with the City of Stockholm, this essay hopes to uncover how certain questions of memory, photographic images and modern urban life are intertwined in respect to these "memory books" published during, as well as after, these large-scale architectural changes.

Kriskommunikationens retorik: En studie i förtroendets uppgång och fall2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Hon praktiserade dessutom i hög grad kriskommunikativa teorier.

    Abstract [en]

Abortion remains a contentious issue, which greatly raises ethical problems. This thesis examines the leading arguments in the Swedish abortion debate around the – in terms of legislation – critical years of 1938 and 1974. With Foucault's genealogical method, Butler's theories of gender as a social construction in relation to power and doxa, the study examines what the development of the argumentation says about the views on morality, the woman's body, life, individual and state? How has the arguments pro and against abortion changed over time and what does this say about the norms that guide and orientate the arguments? The most obvious change in argumentation is seen in the shift from an absolute moral and conservative position into an increasingly relativistic and liberal position, and this study will argue that this shift has its prerequisites in the changing status of the citizen and state. Yet, despite these developments, a moral ambivalence can be discerned in the arguments advanced in favour of the right to abortion. The question of what life is grievable and when this occurs is constantly negotiated. This constant negotiation is modulated and modified by different discourses. As this study shows, the absolutistic and the relativistic discourse gives rise to radically different positions. But while the relativistic discourse once radicalized the discussion on abortion, mainly because it served to relativize an absolutist position, it serves radically other purposes today. The subjectivist stance could even be seen to threaten individual’s right to self-determination over their own bodies.

Twitter och nyhetsrapportering: En studie om Twitters roll för journalism och kommunikation2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Since the emergence of social media websites as an established part of our society, the landscape ofcommunication has undergone dramatic changes. Especially in the field of journalism, the impact ofsocial media websites, such as Twitter, has been the subject of discussions about the actual partsocial media play in communication and news reporting. The general opinion has been that socialmedia has revolutionized the way we communicate and that a shift in power is taking place as themasses now engage in, and affect, our societies way of spreading information. This study is acritical discussion about whether Twitter in particular, and social media in general, has affected thejournalistic field in the extent that many claim it has. By comparing theories about traditionalmedia, such as television and newspapers, with recent studies about Twitter, we conclude that it isto early to establish the role of social media. I find that Twitter has today become an extended partof the journalistic methods and that it is merely a new tool for communication rather than a platformthat has allowed the masses to challenge the current ways of news reporting.

Malmö – en kunskapsstad i kris2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
