    Abstract [en]

    The aim of the thesis was to study young people's thoughts on religious education in high school with a focus on life questions (livsfrågor).

    In order to achieve the purpose of the thesis the issue was divided into two primary issues: how do young people describe religious education in high school? And how do they reflect on the concept of life questions? And two secondary issues: do young people consider that life questions were a part of religious teaching? And do the young people consider that their life questions were a part of religious teaching?

    In order to answer the issues five young people were interviewed on questions related to teaching of religion and life questions. The five youths had studied at least one religious course at secondary level.

    The results showed that the five youths regarded religious education as studies about "the others" because the major focus was on facts but they nevertheless perceived religious education as interesting. All the young people reflected differently about the concept of life questions. Whether or not life questions were brought up in the classrooms varied between the participants. Only one of the participants expressed with certainty that life questions that she also viewed as her own were brought up in the classroom.

    Syftet med föreliggande undersökning är att ta reda påvilket utrymme det finns för undervisning om mandeism inom ramen för svensk religionskunskapsundervisning samt att ta reda på hur några mandeiska ungdomar upplever religionskunskapsämnet. Undersökningen har genomförts med hjälp av en kvalitativansats som består av 7elevintervjuer och 2 lärarintervjuer. Undersökningen visar att mandeism inte tas upp på religionskunskapsundervisningen och att vissa elever tycker att detta är jobbigt. Vidare har det visat sig att en del elever upplever ett utanförskap eftersom den mandeiska religionen aldrig tas upp i undervisningen. Resultatet har även visat att lärarna menar att de inte har möjlighet att undervisa om mandeism eftersom det inte finns med i det centrala innehållet för årskurs 7–9. Även om mandeismen inte nämns i det centrala innehållet i läroplanen menar jag dock att det finns möjligheter för undervisning om mandeism då syftet med religionskunskapsämnet är att elever ska få möjlighet att utveckla kunskaper om religioner och andra livsåskådningar i det egna samhället och på andra håll i världen.

    Abstract [en]

    This case study examines how a group of upper secondary school students in a multiethnical suburb of Stockholm reason about the theory of evolution. The theoretical background of the thesis is postcolonial and the questions raised were how spread the creationist thoughts are in the group; in what way the backgrounds of the students are relevant to their thoughts; how the students construct the notion of the theory of evolution; how they position themselves and others in relation to the discourse of the theory of evolution; if there are any differences between students at the collage program of natural science and the collage program of social science, and in that case, what differences; and who or what inspires the young in their thoughts about the theory of evolution. To answer these questions both a survey poll and interviews were used. The result of the case study showed that a majority of the students at the investigated school has creationist ideas and that the students profiled on social science have creationist ideas in a wider extent. Another result is that the religious background seems to be relevant to develop creationist thoughts, while the variables gender, home district and educational level did not differ the creationist group from the whole group. The students accept some parts of the theory of evolution, for example the development of spices and their adaptation to the environment, but they position themselves mainly outside the discourse of the theory of evolution. The students say that there is no contradiction between religion and science but their talk reveal a discourse where the two stand as opponents. They see themselves as inferior to their teachers, scientists and atheists in general. The study shows that the interviewed were not able to tell were they got inspired to their thoughts. In short, the students starting-point is above all their religious identity and their reasoning about the evolution emanate from it.

    Abstract [en]

    This article presents some of the theoretical and methodological considerations in studying religious and cultural diversity in Finnish, Swedish and Estonian comprehensive schools. The perspective arises from our experiences of carrying out an international comparative research project looking at pupils´perspectives to diversity in the educational settings and their wider everyday environments.  The data were gathered in diverse comprehensive school contexts across Sweden, Estonia and Finland. The article illustrates several important issues that are often lacking in the studies in this area and need to be accounted for when examining cultural and religious diversity in the schools and the everyday lives of children and youth.

    Up until the 19th century, religion was used as a way of legitimizing slavery in America. With the rise of the civil rights movement religion seems to have played a quite different role. This essay aims to explore the role of religion in the ideologies of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. The speeches, writings and actions of these two men have been analysed in hope that the result will contribute to the larger study of American civil rights history.

    This essay proposes that both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X infused their political message with religious ideas and that they leaned on religion for support and inspiration. By analysing the discourse headed by King and X it becomes clear that in direct contrast to how religion was used during slavery, religion was used as a way of legitimizing equality (and in some cases black superiority) between races during the civil rights movement.

    Abstract [en]

    The teacher Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940) is one of Sweden's most famous and beloved writers and her books have been sold in millions worldwide. She received the Nobel Prize in Literature 1909 and was selected as the first woman in the Swedish academy five years later in 1914. She grew up on the farm Mårbacka and, after her success, could buy it back and lived there until she passed away in 1940.

    Among her most famous works is The Story of Gösta Berling, Herr Arne’s Hoard and Jerusalem. The latter is a novel, published in two parts in 1901 and 1902 and the narrative spans four generations in the 19th century and focuses on the family Ingmarsson and several other families from the County of Nås who, for religious reasons, emigrated to Jerusalem to join the American Colony. 

    To get an understanding of these emigrants, Selma Lagerlöf traveled to Jerusalem to meet and learn more about them. During the trip, Lagerlöf corresponded with her mother, Louise Lagerlöf, and it is through this correspondence that I have sought answers to the following questions:

    Given the premise that Selma Lagerlöf, per her own opinion, had no knowledge of emigration of religious groups; how much can we understand that she learned about this colony while traveling, based on her correspondence?  To what extent can this correspondence detect observations and teachings concerning religion, religious practice and presumptuous religious people? To the extent that religious beliefs, internships or supposed practitioners are mentioned in the correspondence; are there any appreciable differences in conceptual usage based on how she may look at the other?

    The hermeneutical explanation model used in this study as a theory and method has, through an analysis of the correspondence, conclude that her journey gave her great insight into the colonists, that she also learned a lot about other religions and its practitioners and that some valuational words in the letters reveal that she received a very positive image of the emigrants, but that she generally held a neutral description even of non-Christians.

    Abstract [en]

    The title of this essay is Project: The Veil – an investigation of the trends in the Swedish veil debate compared with the veil debate in France and Great Britain written by Cecilia Lindvall. The purpose of the paper is to analyze how the argument has been conducted by the Swedish politicians from the time when the veil was first recognized in Swedish media up until today. The questions I wanted to answer was each countries definition of the three concepts secularization, freedom of religion and multiculturalism, how Islam as a faith with Muslims has developed in Sweden, France and Great Britain and each countries integration politics with the politicians attitude towards the veil. The method being used is a qualitative study with three kind of theories for analysis; two who derives from a feminist point of view where the first one advocates for the rights of each women, the second for the rights of religious groups and a third theory which discusses different models of integration logics. The study shows that Swedish politicians turned from a negative approach to the veil to advocate the rights of every woman‟s right to wear religious cloth. Sweden and Great Britain chooses similar direction in their national integration program – which protects group rights – while France promotes individual rights on a basis of assimilation politics.

    Abstract [en]

    This study regards the influence of ’modern’ satanism on performative art in the nineteen sixties- and seventies. The methodological framework consists of performativity theory, religious visual culture and aesthetics of experimental film. The material consists mainly of cinematic work by Kenneth Anger and Alejandro Jodorowsky, as well as musical performances by the likes of Mick Jagger, the Rolling Stones and David Bowie. In addition to this material I also use academic texts, dissertations and books written about the subjects themselves as a foundation for my own further analysis and discussions. By looking closely at a selection of cinnematic work of foremost Kenneth Anger, I try to show how his own esoteric and occult interests are present as a fundamental part of his creative process and the following filmworks/artworks themselves. This is also put into relationship with Anton Szandor Lavey, founder of the Church of Satan, and their common thoughts concerning ritually performed magic. By using performativity theory I trie to emphasise the interlocking structures of these two worlds in the artwork of Kenneth Anger and other artists active in the culturual ’milieu’ of the sixties- and seventies. The results indicate that the religious sphere of satanism, occultism and esotericism (and alternative modes of religion in general) was closeley inflicted with counterculture-infused film and music (as represented by the selection of material).

    Abstract [en]

    This essay examines the processes of interpretations of hadith within a group of muslim women in Stockholm, Sweden. The readings and interpretation of hadith took place in a smaller mosque. The practices of interpretation was studied by the authour through observations and further discussed with informants in interviews. Meaningmaking processes which connected the hadith readings with the everyday life of the group participants; related to questions of moral and etics, relations between men and women and other specific issues, has been highlightened through the observations. The material from observations and interviews has been examined hermeneutically through a narrative model of analysis, revealing structures of interpretation which includes local perspectives as well as connections to a global islamic discourse. The analysis shed a light on the interconnections between the sayings of the Prophet, the religious self and the everyday life of the participants of the group.

    Abstract [en]

    This study is about quantum physics and the role it can play in a religious perspective. I intend to examine how moderna physics may be related and understood as New age and Myths. My material consists of two books in the new age genre: "The Tao of Physics" by Fritjof Capra and "The Quantum Self" by Danah Zohar. My first two question to these books are which 1) religious and 2) scientific content they have. My other questions are too 3) investigate and demonstrate how these books are new age and 4) to exanine how the books can function as myths and adopt mythical features. And last 5) to compare important content and ideas between the books. My methods are a simple hermeneutic close reading with a qualitative inductive analysis grounded in previous research and theory. My method is also inspired by a contextual analysis of ideas and an exploratory study.

    In the investigation I start by showing what religious and scientific materials the books contain. My conslusion is that these two books thoroughly fulfill many criteria for the New age genre. They should however not be counted as Myths becuse they do not meet the requirenents I have defined in the theory section. Moreover, the books share many similarities, such as many common references and resistance to some ideas from the Western tradition of ideas. But there are also some differences, mainly in how they use quantum physics. Firstly, a difference is that Capra primarily make parallels between quantum physics and Eastern philosophical tradition which Zohar does not. Secondly, Capra uses quantum physics to approach the mesage, that is primarily derived from Buddhism, which is that the reality is dynamic and in the end that the world is a "non-existing thing". Zohar is opposed to this and she would call it an extreme solipsism. She argues that the reality consists of both a particle and wave structure wich she applices at the consciousness.

    This essay is about the modern Swedish Nazi movement in relation to the German Nazi movement before and during the Second World War. The analysis is made using the Nazi Myth theory as described by French philosophers Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe & Jean-Luc Nancy. Theory and method are aimed at analysing the Nazi movement as a religious one. In this essay I have identified five main Nazi Myth elements required to realize Nazi ideals and embraced by original German Nazis. Through text analysis I have studied how Swedish Nazis use and reproduce these elements.The result will show that the main elements are well represented in modern Swedish Nazi texts and must be considered as central and bearing in modern Swedish Nazism. However, modern Swedish Nazism is also different from original German Nazism in some ways, for example in view of race, land and art.

The purpose of the study have been to examine what point of gender awarness the selected learning materials has with the help of the genderstaircase. My ambition is to complete the genderstaircase with other theories to enhance the results. The result showed that two of three textbooks passed the demands of the curriculum GY11.

    Abstract [en]

    Stockholm County is a post-industrial Swedish region characterized by high levels of mobility and technologization as well as ethnic and religious diversity. Among its religious minorities exist various strands of charismatic Christianity, some of which originate from the Pentecostal revival of the early 20th century and some of which belong to more recent movements.

    The aim of this ethnographic study is to examine how affiliates of the multicultural charismatic Christian congregation New Life Church practice religiosity within the context of their personal daily lives, within the framework of the general congregation and in terms of their involvements with other religious organizations in the area of Stockholm.

    Beginning with the assumption that the practice of contemporary religiosity and the development of a religious identity are part of an ongoing process of habituation, the study describes how practitioners cultivate a form of charismatic piety characterized by certain embodied orientations, patterns of ritualization and narrative genres. To shed further light on this process, it draws upon a variety of theories concerning ritualization, embodiment, performance, narratives and materiality. Apart from this, the study also constitutes an attempt to explore and measure the impact on the practitioners’ religiosity of late modern developments such as urbanization, detraditionalization and global mobility as well as the growing absorption in consumerism, emotional intimacy and the unfolding of the “authentic” inner self.

    While pursuing these ends, the study also calls into question previous assumptions about charismatic Christianity in Sweden, most particularly the assumption that today’s practitioners remain inclined to be entirely faithful to one given institution and its system of beliefs and practices. Indeed this view is directly challenged herein by the finding that contemporary charismatics are far more inclined to eclectically appropriate elements and models of thoughts from various contexts of origin as well as to affiliate with and/or visit multiple Christian institutions.

    This study paints a general picture of the field of exopolitics and highlights some of the leading figures in separate thematic sections. Exopolitics endeavours for a disciplined way to study political processes and actors associated with interstellar society.

    The front figures share common goals, although they at times have different methods of how to attain them. They complement each other well, however, since they cover different areas of exopolitics. The exopolitical field also seems to some extent fragmented.

    The larger picture shows many similarities with the UFO field, and also some similarities to New Age and new religious movements. But exopolitics also has its own characteristics and a complex picture emerges. Exopolitics is pro-active and encouraging, sometimes rather defiant, eager to have politics, science and spirituality blend into one - on the road to what it regards as the impending interstellar society.

    Integration är ett brett och omdiskuterat ämne i det mångkulturella och mångreligiösa Sverige då landet har fått uppleva en stor invandring till landet genom åren. Denna studies ändamål var att analysera hur integrationen har sett ut för mandaerna som sökt sig till Sverige och få en djupare förståelse hur mandaernas upplevelse och erfarenheter har sett ut. Studien baseras på en kvalitativ intervjustudie där upplevelsen av integration undersöktes i två grupper, den första bestående av ungdomar som kommit till Sverige i ung ålder, och den andra bestående av vuxna som kommit till Sverige i vuxen ålder. Efter intervjuerna så framgick det att informanterna strävar efter en god integrationsprocess där språk, utbildning och arbete utgör en central roll.

    Sexual politics play a key role in anti-Muslim narratives. This has been observed by scholarship problematising liberal feminist approaches towards ‘non-Western’ subjects focusing on countries such as France, the USA and the Netherlands. Yet interrogations into how these debates play out in European national contexts that are located outside of the European ‘West’ have attracted significantly less scholarly attention. Drawing on qualitative data collected in Poland this article aims to begin to fill this gap by analysing the centrality of feminist discourses within Islamophobic agendas in Poland. The article asks how discourses around women’s rights are mobilised simultaneously, and paradoxically, by both secular and Catholic groups in ‘post-communist’ Poland. By showcasing how feminist sentiments are employed by ideologically opposing groups, we sketch out some of the complexities in the ways Islamophobia operates in a Central and Eastern European context.

    This paper is based on a qualitative textbook analysis aiming to investigate what image four selected textbooks, designed for religious education course 1 in Swedish upper secondary school, gives about the Swedish citizen in relation to religion and Christianity, focused on Protestant and Orthodox orientations. And further discuss if it is recognizable and associated with the social context Swedish students live in today. This by examining how the textbooks describe religion, the contemporary religiosity in Sweden and the construction of Christian Protestants in relation to Orthodox Christians . The material was analyzed in relation to previous research, and this papers theoretical basis based on new published literature distributing with contemporary perspectives on the religious landscape - private religiosity in a globalized society and young people’s ability to create meaning, the postsecular Swedes and understanding of religion and Christianity in the postsecular classroom.  

    The contemporary religious understanding and production of the religious human, and in this case exactly Christian Protestants and Orthodox, do not seem to be associated with the social context that Swedish students live in today. The lack of education of contemporary religiosity perspective, and the maintaining of social power structures demands for a critical discussion about the didactic challenges in Swedish religious education.

    Research shows that Muslims are often reproduced within the context that reinforces stereotyping of Muslims, see for example Otterbeck and Schielke. They are often regarded as a collective group with no distinct individuals and thereby the Islamic religiosity is portrayed as different and deviant from the more secular and private practiced Protestantism that is a common belief in Sweden.

    The purpose of this work is to study the already existing representation of Muslim women in a Western context, i.e. Muslim women in Sweden. This is done through an analysis of two ethnographic interviews and observational studies, written by researchers in Sweden (Karlsson Minganti and Sultan Sjöqvist) to investigate the existence of an "us and them" mindset. The two ethnographic studies which are analyzed in this work, deal with different types of Muslims: women who have been Muslims since birth and converted Muslim women. Furthermore, each researcher's results are put in relation to postcolonial theories to interpret and understand the conclusions of the researchers.

    My conclusion is that there are clear tendencies of an "us and them" mindset, where researchers place their research object as "them". The women are portrayed as different, with different values in relation to the "Swedish society" or the "Western world". Many of the women show awareness of being assigned the position of "the others" by the society. The women, both the converted and the ones who have been Muslim since birth, think that they do not fall into the norm of whiteness, they do not identify themselves as the "normal western woman" and they position themselves as a minority, forming the notion that they are "them" and confirming the exclusion of themselves. Other clear trends are the researchers ways to interpret and understand women's lives on the basis of the white 'middle-class women's experiences and thereby excluding the Muslim women’s own perception of their conditions of life.
