    Abstract [en]

    This study examines how reducing anonymity options can change the way people write comments on YouTube-videos. YouTube recently requested users to enter their real names as a username. Users are not yet obligated to do so, but if they do not, they are asked to answer why they chose remain their alias. To investigate this we first let users answer a survey to see what they felt about being anonymous versus giving their real name, and if providing their real name made them more cautious about their way of interacting on YouTube. Then, to see what really is going on in the comment sections, we went through a group of comments to spot patterns in how an alias or a real name is related to the process of writing negative versus positive comments. Comments were analyzed with help from a model that measures the stages of negativity and positivity in a comment. Our studies indicate that the change from alias to real name, make an impact in how comments are made and that much higher rate of negative comments come from users using an alias. The result is an indication that less anonymity may lead to less negativity in YouTube’s comment sections.

    Abstract [en]

    It becomes increasingly more important that, as a new buisness, both to be seen and heard in an increasingly harder competition situation where the range of similar products and services increase. It requires a well planned and well thought visual profile to succesfully stand out on the market. To give a good impression, this profile should be both distinct and aesthetically appealing. In the making of a new profile it requires creativity to succesfully think in new directions and to separate from the competition.

    This practical report presents the production process for a designsolution to the new website Röstförmedlingen (Voice agency), a commission from the production and commercial bureau Bartos media. The task in this project was to create a graphic profile and a lofi-prototype that would represent Röstförmedlingen as a buissness. The target was to create a website with a good looking, new thinking design that separates from the competitors. The report describes the making through interviews, analysis, design methods and scientific research to inspire to a creative design solution. This method has contribute to the foundation on which this project stands.

    Denna rapport kommer att behandla processen i skapandet av RADA som är en applikation där användare kan dela idéer. RADA är ett uppdrag av Acne Digital som jag har tillägnat 3 månaders praktik. Målet med RADA är att medarbetarna som jobbar på Acne Digital ska på en snabbt och interaktivt sätt kunna dela idéer och bilder. Rapporten beskriver hur arbetet gick till från koncept, design och utveckling till en färdig slutprodukt. Jag kommer att undersöka skillnaderna mellan olika tillvägagångssätt när det gäller utveckling och design för webbaserade applikationer och så kallade native applikationer, som släpps på App Store eller Google play. Jag kommer även att ta upp och undersöka vilka metodval som är bäst lämpade för olika utvecklingssituationer när det gäller utvecklingspaketet Phonegap och dess för- och nackdelar.

    This report describes the practical thesis that entailed the redesign of Birnas driving school’s website. The website was in need of a new design, structure and content. In this work, the design process was carried out with a user-centered approach based on design thinking. The work process has consisted of user research, prototyping, the developement of a graphic profile, and user testing. The developement of the new site has been made through the content management system Joomla and the use of HTML and CSS code. The result of this thesis is presented in the form of a website with new graphic design and content.

    Abstract [en]

    In this essay, we have unpacked four different levels (the role of women as: a) a part of game history, b) design process, c) characters of the game and d) users) to get a better understanding of the users choice of characters in the popular fighting game Tekken 7.

     

    We have examined the role of women as part of the game’s history and design-process to gain a deeper understanding into the background of the game’s designing process. We have interviewed users with qualitative methods and used analysis strategies such as semiotic analysis and thematic analysis.

     

    The results of our analysis show that users choose their characters based on visual attributes and that they imagine the characters as being an extension of themselves. Users apprehend the characters as stereotypical and thereby reproduce gender-related norms. The process of picking a character to play with is difficult for some of the users - There is a difference between female and male users due to stereotypical visual attributes of the characters which means that it is more problematic for female users to identify themselves with many of the characters. This is affecting the female users experience in a negative way.

    Abstract [en]

    Cognitive neurosciences have made significant progress in learning about brain activity in situatedcognition, thanks to adopting stimuli that simulate immersion in naturalistic conditions insteadof isolated artificial stimuli. In particular, the use of films in neuroscientific experiments, aparadigm often referred to as neurocinematics, has contributed to this success. The use ofcinematic stimuli, however, has also revealed a fundamental shortcoming of neuroimaging studies:The lack of conceptual and methodological means to handle the viewers' experience of narrativeevents in their temporally extended contexts in the scale of full cinematic narrative, not tomention life itself. In order to give a conceptual structure to the issue of temporal contexts,we depart from the neurophenomenological approach to time consciousness by neurobiologistFrancisco Varela, which in turn builds on Husserl's phenomenology of time. More specifically, wewill discuss the experience of narrative tension, determined by backward-looking conceptualizingretention, and forward-looking anticipatory protention. Further, this conceptual structure isbuilt into a preliminary mathematical model, simulating the dynamics of decaying and refreshingmemory traces that aggregates a retentive perspective for each moment of nowness, which in turnmay trigger anticipations for coming events, in terms of Varela and Husserl, protentions. Thepresent tentative mathematical model is constructed using simple placeholder functions, with theintention that they would eventually be replaced by models based on empirical observations onthe psychological capabilities that support narrative sensemaking. The final goal is a model thatsuccessfully simulates the way how the memory system maintains narrative tension beyond thetransient nowness window, and thereby allows mappings to observed brain activity with a richtemporal system of narrative contexts.

    Today smartphones and mobile applications are a part of our everyday life and information has become more accessible then ever before. The notion of sustainability was established in 1987 and is just as relevant now as then. Sustainable Interaction Design is still today a rather unexplored area, nonetheless important to examine. The purpose of this thesis is to study how mobile applications can help and encourage users toa more sustainable lifestyle. Further more we wanted to look into the awareness of people and their willingness to change their everyday life. By choosing two different mobile applications with a focus on environmental questions we have analyzed how users are allowed to be affected. The result is also based on one survey and one focus group. The resultis interpreted based on previous research by Jeffrey Bardzell and Shaowen Bardzell, Elina Eriksson and Daniel Pargman, Maria Normark and Jacob Tholander with theories around Critical Design, Vanilla Sustainability and Perfomative Design. Our conclusion is that mobile applications can help users to a more sustainable living. For users to be encouraged and affected we have defined som key factors. Pleasing aesthetics and structure are required, the information published should not be ambiguous, but clear and accurate, and the behaviour that is encouraged should benefit the user. In addition we have discovered a connection between awareness and the willingness to change.

    Abstract [en]

    This study examined how users interact with a smartphone while in a learning situation based on videos via smartphones as a learning tool, and how this interaction and phenomena is experienced. The five test subject were separately given the same task that they were to solve using video instructions that were picked out and given to them. After finishing the task the subjects were observed while they demonstrated how they completed the task. After the observation the subject were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The results show that the user experience of this phenomena is based on more pragmatic values than we could find in earlier studies, i.e. simplicity and functionality. We found that people in an older generation, age 50-60, had a more positive experience and view on mobile learning as a whole than what was stated in earlier studies. It also shows that the actual interaction with the smartphone during the task was minimal and only used to solve problems with the interaction such as bad image, bad sound or instructions going to fast. We believe that these results can be used in further studies on user experience and mobile learning and also for the designing of new products.

    Publit is a small company with big ambitions. After only four years in the market services now amajority of the largest Swedish publishing houses (and a number of micro-publishers) with e-bookservices and print-on-demand.The user gets Publit’s services through a web application that has three views; analysis, economics,and directory. The latter holds a debenture issue of physical and electronic books and lets the userdo everything from scanning a physical book or convert a PDF to e-book, to publish their books in aseries of channels and choose prices and business models.Publit’s catalogue view has a number of limitations. It has been our task to fully understand andidentify them. The process has been conducted in the form of iterative sketching combined withdesign-criticism meetings.The result can be seen from two perspectives. For our own part, it consists of a large number ofsketches that illustrate our process. For Publit’s part is the end result of a few relatively completedesign solutions, rather than sketches. These will largely serve as a model in efforts to develop thenext generation of Publit’s catalouge view, work that is expected to begin in autumn 2012 and willprobably last at least a year.Keywords:

    Abstract [en]

    Analytic expressions which describe average quantization errors in digitized data with additive noise are derived. The magnitude of this error depends on the noise present in the analog signal, the bin-size (the difference between neighboring quantization levels) and also the signal itself. An iterative process, which corrects for these residual quantization errors after averaging, is proposed and tested in simulations. Alternatively a method for avoiding quantization errors during digitization of signals which will later be averaged is suggested.

    Feedback control on was carried out on non-linear thermocapillary convections in a half-zone liquid bridge of a high Prandtl number fluid. In the liquid bridge, the convection changes from a two-dimensional steady flow to a three-dimensional oscillatory one at a critical temperature difference. Feedback control was realized by locally modifying the free surface temperature using local temperature measured at different positions. The present study aims to develop a new control scheme by taking spatio-temporal azimuthal distribution of temperature fluctuation into account. The new control scheme achieved significant attenuation of the temperature oscillation compared with the previous one in a high Marangoni number range.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study was to follow a research-oriented design process and to develop a design draft for a digital service that supports users to make more environmentally conscious choises in their everyday life. By following an interaction design process from start to final delivery, the study aims at creating a broad understanding of the process. Therefore, many userrelated activities were implemented in the study: eg. personas, scenarios, sketching and user testing. The project resulted in digital wireframes for an iPhone application using embedded GPS to identify and locate environmentally friendly businesses. Part of the result of this project, as described in this essay, is an understanding of how a research-oriented and user centered design process can be carried out.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to examine which aspects of blogs and blog design that are important to blog readers but also to find new ideas for blog design. From a qualitative standpoint we have examined how seven users experience that blogs design, structure and functionalities affects the general experience of the blog. The study also examines how the users wish to interact with a blog. During two design workshops we let seven active blog readers imagine and sketch out the design and functionalities they would like in a blog. We put this in relation to theories about the anatomy of blogs, methods of design, social navigation and virtual communities.

    The major finding is that the aspects most important to blog readers are navigation, structure and social interaction. Based on these aspects we discuss more closely the ideas our subjects had about what the blog of their dreams would look like.

    Abstract [en]

    A Volume of Fluid (VOF) method is applied to investigate the deformation and breakup of an initially spherical drop in the bag- and shear breakup regimes, induced by steady disturbances. The onset of breakup is sought by studying steady-shape deformations while increasing the Weber number until breakup occurs. A parameter study is carried out applying different material properties and a wide range of drop Reynolds numbers in the steady wake regime. Density ratios of liquid to gas of 20, 40, and 80, viscosity ratios in the range 0.5-50, and Reynolds numbers between 20 and 200 are investigated for a constant Weber number of 20. The critical Weber number is found to be 12, in agreement with observations of earlier studies. For Weber number of 20 varying density, viscosity ratios and Reynolds numbers, interesting mixed breakup modes are discovered. Moreover, a new regime map including all modes observed is presented. A criterion for the transition between bag-and shear breakup is defined relating the competing inertial and shear forces appearing in the flow. Furthermore, results on breakup times and the time history of the drag coefficient are presented; the latter is concluded to be a potential parameter to indicate the occurrence of breakup.     Maker and DIY cultures, as well as the trend towards personal fabrication have gained recent visibility in HCI research. While first reflecting on makers as a new user and “social actor”, current rhetoric has shifted towards the maker movement’s potential for empowerment and democratization. By focusing on places and the organization of personal fabrication we are drawing lines between amateur vs. professional, and home vs. work settings as well as leisure vs. educational motivations. Here we discuss and map out the characteristics of semi-professional places for making in the light of a small study from a hackathon event.

    Abstract [en]

    This report describes how today's technological processes look like in the production of applications for interactive publications. An interactive publication is a digitally created magazine with an extra layer of information that you can interact with. Examples of interactivity is slideshows and video and data streams in real time that are displayed directly in the magazine.

    The report focuses on what it is that adds value to a digital interactive publication, and what functions which may provide cause to this. Through a comparative analysis of digital publications and the newspapers, four designaspects have been developed as an basis for how the interactive elements should be handled in the production of digital publications. 

    A prototype of an interactive publication was developed to show how the designaspects can be applied and to show how information can be presented in a more interactive way.

    Fun with Death and Failure: An exploration of player experiences in a decentralized open world RPG2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Many modern single-player role-playing games offer the player a power fantasy where the experience is designed to make the players feel powerful right from the start, with enemies and challenges that scale to the player characters level and abilities. This study explores what happens with play when power fantasy is replaced with decentralization and especially how this decentralization affects the player’s experience of failure and death.

    To explore this, three experienced The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim-players played the game with the modification Requiem - The Roleplaying Overhaul. After the participants had played at home for at least 8 hours they each participated in individual semi-structured interviews about their experiences. The interviews were transcribed and a grounded theory coding was performed. Finally the results were analyzed to find common themes.

    The study found that there was initial frustration due to expecting a power fantasy experience but once players adapted, the increased difficulty of decentralization was enjoyable as long as the player’s agency was not taken away and the world and its difficulty was logical. While the scope of the study is too small to draw generalizable conclusions it nevertheless shows that decentralized, difficult games work well for certain players. Future research is required on how to mitigate the effects of the initial obstacle.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to explore how good User Experience (UX) in web design leads to increased possibilities for conversion rate. By using specific design elements and applying them with a UX perspective on the web design for Aller Media's new recipe site Stowe, high conversion rates would be expected. As a member of the Stowe project group, I have developed different sketches. Theoretical basis for this has been literature with a focus on conversion optimization, UX and web design. Based on that, I have created the design for several web pages of the Stowe site using the graphic design software Sketch. Accordingly, my part was to decide how different design elements could be used to improve the possibilities of high conversion and offer good UX, and also how this could be implemented into factual design. In so doing I have followed the process of web design from beginning to end. The result of this was an in detail sketch of Stowe's landing page, an onboarding flow and sketches of several different Stowe pages, some of which were a collection page and a recipe page.

    Abstract [en]

    We present a modeling approach that enables numerical simulations of a boiling Van der Waals fluid based on the diffuse interface description. A boundary condition is implemented that allows in and out flux of mass at constant external pressure. In addition, a boundary condition for controlled wetting properties of the boiling surface is also proposed. We present isothermal verification cases for each element of our modeling approach. By using these two boundary conditions we are able to numerically access a system that contains the essential physics of the boiling process at microscopic scales. Evolution of bubbles under film boiling and nucleate boiling conditions are observed by varying boiling surface wettability. We observe flow patters around the three-phase contact line where the phase change is greatest. For a hydrophilic boiling surface, a complex flow pattern consistent with vapor recoil theory is observed.

    Abstract [en]

    The present work investigates thermocapillary flow in a cylindrical configuration using large Prandtl number liquids. The flow is studied using coordinated simulations and experimental optical methods such as PIV and flow visualization. In this way, properties of the oscillatory state can be obtained in great detail. Considerable attention is given to the search for the parameters influencing the onset of the instability. It is found that the onset of oscillations can be correlated using a thermocapillary Reynolds number. The oscillations take the form of a standing wave close to the onset, which is replaced by a travelling wave for stronger forcing. The selection of azimuthal wave number of the oscillatory mode is determined from geometrical parameters, and resembles the wave number selection in vortex ring instabilities. Throughout we obtain good agreement between experiments and simulations using a mathematical model with an undeformed adiabatic free surface.

    Abstract [en]

    Wetting phenomena, i.e. the spreading of a liquid over a dry solid surface, are important for understanding how plants and insects imbibe water and moisture and for miniaturization in chemistry and biotechnology, among other examples. They pose fundamental challenges and possibilities, especially in dynamic situations. The surface chemistry and micro-scale roughness may determine the macroscopic spreading flow. The question here is how dynamic wetting depends on the topography of the substrate, i.e. the actual geometry of the roughness elements. To this end, we have formulated a toy model that accounts for the roughness shape, which is tested against a series of spreading experiments made on asymmetric sawtooth surface structures. The spreading speed in different directions relative to the surface pattern is found to be well described by the toy model. The toy model also shows the mechanism by which the shape of the roughness together with the line friction determines the observed slowing down of the spreading.

    Abstract [en]

    The stability of thermocapillary convection inside a cylindrical liquid bridge is studied using both a direct numerical simulation of the three-dimensional problem and linear stability analysis of the axisymmetric basic state. Previously this has been studied extensively for low and high Prandtl numbers. However, the intermediate range of Prandtl numbers between approximately 0.07 and 0.8 which joins the low and high ranges is quite complicated and has not been studied to the same extent. One striking feature is that the axisymmetric base state is much more stable in this intermediate range than at high or low Prandtl numbers. We identify four different oscillatory modes in this range, which have different qualitative features. Direct numerical simulations have been carried out for representative parameter values, and show that the bifurcations are supercritical.

    Abstract [en]

    This report is a part of my bachelor thesis for the program It, media and design at Södertörn University. In this report I will present the new design for FitnessCollection’s administration website and a list with proposed changes. FitnessCollection offers a service where members  an work out at gyms that are linked to them. The website I have worked on manages organizations, gyms, activities, passes, bookings and exportation of bookings. I have made my bachelor thesis at Dynamo Digital Ventures and FitnessCollection has been the client.

    The goal for the bachelor thesis has been to present a thorough design that among other things increases the usability. Functions has been removed, added or changed to satisfy the need that FitnessCollection and their partners have. To reach the end goal I have conducted an interview with one of the founders of FitnessCollection whom also is one of the persons that uses the website most. I have made an overlock of the website to see what works and what doesn’t work as good. I have also done thorough feasibility studies in usability and accessibility and worked with conventions where I as a part of that has taken inspiration from outer websites. On this basis I have made a more usable, satisfying and accessible web design.

    Abstract [en]

    We model and simulate dielectrophoresis of microscale particles using the finite element method. A soft sphere system molecular dynamics model is presented, which solves a set of equations for the motion of every particle. The model couples most of the significant forces, i.e. the dielectrophoresis (DEP) forces, the particle-particle electrostatic forces, particle-particle interfacial repulsive forces, particle-wall repulsive forces and the hydrodynamic forces in Stokes flow. Since the system of equations is stiff, an implicit scheme is used. To obtain the particle trajectories, a constant time-step is applied. We present some numerical tests computing hydrodynamic force, electrostatic force and DEP force using our model, including simulated trapping of particles in a micro channel by dielectrophoresis. The results are in agreement with the theories and the experimental observations.

    In this paper, a model is proposed to numerically calculate the dielectrophoretic (DEP) force acting on a straight slender body in a non-uniform electric field. The induced charges are assumed to be located along the centerline of the slender body. By enforcing the boundary conditions at the interfaces of the two dielectrics, an integral equations system is obtained with the induced charge densities as unknowns. Based on the calculated induced charge densities, expressions to calculate the DEP force and torque are obtained. The calculated induced charge density of a prolate ellipsoid under a uniform electric field is compared with the analytic solution and an excellent agreement is achieved. The smaller the slenderness (the ratio of maximum radius to length of the slender body), the smaller the error is. The DEP force that a prolate ellipsoid experiences in a general electric field is numerically calculated and compared with the results obtained by the commonly accepted effective dipole moment method. The current model is expected to possess higher accuracy than the effective dipole moment method and to demand less calculation work than the Maxwell stress tensor method.

    We report a molecular dynamics study of anisotropic dynamics and dielectric properties of water confined inside a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) at room temperature. The model includes dynamics of an SWNT described by a realistic potential function. A comparison with simulations assuming a rigid nanotube demonstrates that the popular assumption severely overestimates the dielectric constant for small diameter SWNTs. Simulations of water inside flexible SWNTs with various diameters reveal strong directional dependence of the dynamic and dielectric properties due to the confinement effect. The obtained dielectric permittivity spectra (DPS) identify two different dipolar relaxation frequencies corresponding to the axial and the cross-sectional directions, which are significantly smaller and larger than the single relaxation frequency of bulk water, respectively. The frequency variation increases as the SWNT diameter decreases. The results suggest that DPS can be used as a fingerprint of water inside SWNTs to monitor the water intrusion into SWNTs.

    We theoretically investigate the impact of the electrothermal flow on the dielectrophoretic separation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The electrothermal flow is observed to control the motions of semiconducting SWNTs in a sizable domain near the electrodes under typical experimental conditions, therefore helping the dielectrophoretic force to attract semiconducting SWNTs in a broader range. Moreover, with the increase of the surfactant concentration, the electrothermal flow effect is enhanced, and with the change of frequency, the pattern of the electrothermal flow changes. It is shown that under some typical experimental conditions of dielectrophoretic separation of SWNTs, the electrothermal flow is a dominating factor in determining the motion of SWNTs.

    This thesis examines the foundation of efficient visual communication. Literary studies of communication and design principals have been executed. To gain thorough knowledge a sales material in the form of a brochure has been produced for a company where knowledge of effective visual communication has been applied. The brochure has been the practical part of the thesis. The work has been executed based on Petterssons (2002) model and has resulted in a brochure with pop up-functions. To proceed from a communication theory in understanding the receiver’s situation and the eventual disturbances that can occur during the transmission of a message has proven very useful. Also, the understanding of frequently occurring communication impediments and how the human perception works is seen as an advantage to include in the produce. Knowledge of design principles increases the chances to create effective visual communication.

    This study explores how online television works and how it is integrated with social media such as Facebook, Twitter and blogs. Through three qualitative interviews with representants from different fields of work regarding online television, we have concluded how online television is being used in Sweden today and concludes with examples of what the future of online television could look like. Representatives from the following companies have been interviewed: SBS Media Group Sweden, Strix Television and Mediamätning i Skandinavien. The use of social media for marketing of online television is a fact for the companies in this study. However, the result of the study shows that theres room for development in the integration between online television and social media. The manner in which integration takes place depends on the aims and objectives of the producer.

    Abstract [en]

    For this essay we used pattern theory from interface design and applied it in an analysis of touch games. In order to make full use of the patterns, we selected five of them and adapted these slightly with the help of game related patterns to be useful for the framework of this essay. The selection of games were the top eight games on the App Store’s “What’s Hot”. The results showed, among other things, that the games had a clear focus on getting a pleasant apperance, and they did it relatively well. The grouping and positioning of buttons on the other hand was illogical and at times frustrating. We came to a conclusion that the focus on the visual apperance of the games had consequences on other aspects that were perhaps more important to the interface. Furthermore, we noticed a distinct lack of interface in both menus and during gameplay. We deduced this was since the game developers chose to use the technical aspects of touch, rather than implement more interface such as buttons or similiar.

    Internet and social media have opened up new possibilities for companies and organisations tocommunicate their brand. It only takes a few seconds to communicate the message of a website to theuser. This indicates the importance of having the intended message of the website communicated clearlyin order to give the user a correct impression of the company or the organisation. When it comes to theconcept design of a website, it’s important that all different parts is presented uniformly. This reportdescribes the process and the end product of a concept design for a food event. The concept designincludes interaction design, a graphic identity and digital strategies in a website that all togheter creates astartingpoint for the branding of the event. In the creation of the logotyp which is as part of the graphicidentity it was important to anticipate the needs of the users and the other stakeholders. An interviewstudy was conducted with a focus group of the purpose to investigate users' feelings and reactions basedon the first impressions of three different logo proposals. The investigation was fruitful and increased ourunderstanding about what the participants thought about the different logotypes and colour combinations.Along with a few corrections we reach a brand identity that could be effective in communicating themessage of the event. During the design process, we had regular weekly meetings with the client who alsoapproved the final logo, graphic identity as well as the digital strategies and functions of the website. Theresult shows that a careful preparatory phase is a necessity to establish the client's goals and vision as wellas our own early in the process. This helped us to keep the design work on a steady path through thewhole process as well as creating a unified concept design for the event.

    Chronic pain is a common condition that people struggle with on daily basis and many strive to find ways to relive their pain. With the development of wearables and smart garments we are now moving from designing an object to be used, to an object to be worn. Technology is an extension of the body and the interaction in itself also becomes part of our body. This development enables different kind of treatments to be implemented in a wearable. Accordingly, this study have investigated if an interactive experience using heat and guided meditation with a wearable can support individuals living with chronic pain, and to what extent the experience can change the perception of pain. The results indicate that an interactive experience including these modalities can have the ability to change perception of pain. The study also suggests implications for design by presenting design qualities that become important in such a design, which resulted in; distraction and immersion, familiarity and practice, personalization and flexibility.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper, we numerically study particle formation in the rapid expansion of supercritical solution (RESS) process in a two dimensional, axisymmetric geometry, for a benzoic acid + CO2 system. The fluid is described by the classical Navier-Stokes equation, with the thermodynamic pressure being replaced by a generalized pressure tensor. Homogenous particle nucleation, transport, condensation and coagulation are described by a general dynamic equation, which is solved using the method of moments. The results show that the maximal nucleation rate and number density occurs near the nozzle exit, and particle precipitation inside the nozzle might not be ignored. Particles grow mainly across the shocks. Fluid in the shear layer of the jet shows a relatively low temperature, high nucleation rate, and carries particles with small sizes. On the plate, particles within the jet have smaller average size and higher geometric mean, while particles outside the jet shows a larger average size and a lower geometric mean. Increasing the preexpansion temperature will increase both the average particle size and standard deviation. The preexpansion pressure does not show a monotonic dependency with the average particle size. Increasing the distance between the plate and the nozzle exit might decrease the particle size. For all the cases in this paper, the average particle size on the plate is on the order of tens of nanometers.

    Abstract [en]

    Axisymmetric rapid expansion of supercritical carbon dioxide is investigated in this article. The extended generalized Bender equation of state is used to give a good description of the fluids over a wide range of pressure and temperature conditions. The locations of Mach disks are analyzed and compared with an experimental correlation for the case where there is no plate positioned in front of the nozzle exit. It is found that the disagreement between our numerical results and the experimental formula is very small when the pressure ratio is small, and increases as the pressure ratio increases. It is also found that with different equations of state, the predicted positions of Mach disks do not differ a lot, but the temperature profiles in the chamber differ a lot. The case where there is a plate positioned in front of the nozzle exit is also studied in this article. A universal similarity solution is obtained.

    Abstract [en]

    We numerically study the thermohydrodynamics of boiling for a CO2 + ethanol mixture on lyophilic and lyophobic surfaces in both closed and open systems, based on a diffuse interface model for a two-component system. The corresponding wetting boundary conditions for an isothermal system are proposed and verified in this paper. New phenomena due to the addition of another component, mainly the preferential evaporation of the more volatile component, are observed. In the open system and the closed system, the physical process shows very different characteristics. In the open system, except for the movement of the contact line, the qualitative features are rather similar for lyophobic and lyophilic surfaces. In the closed system, the vortices that are observed on a lyophobic surface are not seen on a lyophilic surface. More sophisticated wetting boundary conditions for nonisothermal, two-component systems might need to be further developed, taking into account the variations of density, temperature, and surface tension near the wall, while numerical results show that the boundary conditions proposed here also work well even in boiling, where the temperature is nonuniform.

    Abstract [en]

    A phase-field method for two-dimensional simulations of binary alloy solidification is studied. Phase-field equations that involve both temperature and solute redistribution are formulated. The equations are solved using the finite element method with triangular elements on unstructured meshes, which are adapted to the solution. Dendritic growth into a supersaturated melt is simulated for two temperature regimes: (a) the temperature is prescribed on the boundary of the computational domain; and (b) the heat is extracted through the domain boundary at a constant rate. In the former regime the solute redistribution is compared with the one given by an isothermal model. In the latter case the influence of the size of the computational domain and of the heat extraction rate on dendritic structure is investigated. It is shown that at high cooling rates the supersaturation is replaced by thermal undercooling as the driving force for growth.

    Abstract [en]

    The transition between diffusion controlled and massive transformation gamma --> alpha in Fe-C alloys is investigated by means of phase-field simulations and thermodynamic functions assessed by the Calphad technique as well as diffusional mobilities available in the literature. A gradual variation in properties over an incoherent interface, having a thickness around 1 nm, is assumed. The phase-field simulations are compared with a newly developed technique to model solute drag during phase transformations. Both approaches show qualitatively the same behavior and predict a transition to a massive transformation at a critical temperature below the T-0 line and close to the alpha/alpha + gamma phase boundary. It is concluded that the quantitative difference between the two predictions stems from different assumptions on how the properties vary across the phase interface yielding a lower dissipation of Gibbs energy by diffusion in the phase-field simulations. The need for more detailed information about the actual variation in interfacial properties is emphasized.

    A phase-field method, based on a Gibbs energy functional, is formulated for γ→α transformation in Fe-C. The derived phase-field model reproduces the following important types of phase transitions: from C diffusion controlled growth through Widmanstätten microstructures to massive growth without partitioning of C. Applying thermodynamic functions assessed by the Calphad technique and diffusional mobilities available in the literature, we study two-dimensional growth of ferrite side plates emanating from an austenite grain boundary. The morphology of the ferrite precipitates is defined by a highly anisotropic interfacial energy. As large values of anisotropy lead to an ill-posed phase-field equation we present a regularization method capable of circumvent non-differentiable domains of interfacial energy.

    Abstract [en]

    Friend lists allow Facebook users to group their friends and may be used to share certain information only with those in a specific list. This function has been around for several years, but has never gained any particular popularity among users, most of whom probably did not know it even existed a couple of years ago. In the fall of 2011, however, the function was updated and made more visible on the site.

    There are several possible uses of friend lists, such as privacy control, filtering of the news feed, self-presentation and targeted information sharing. This paper aims to investigate the extent to which friend lists are used by students today, as well as why students actually use their lists, i.e. for what purposes.

    Judging from the results of this study in comparison with earlier research, there seems to have been a somewhat recent increase in the awareness of the fact that friend lists actually do exist, but still most users tend not to utilize them. Moreover, the results indicate that friend lists quite rarely are used for privacy control, or anything else for that matter, probably due to a number of drawbacks that they possess as of today.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper accounts for the work with a website for a company whose real name will not be disclosed in the text of this paper. Instead, they have been assigned the fictitious name Larmbolaget, which can be translated as ‘The Alarm Company’.

    During our work with Larmbolaget’s website, we consulted a selection of accessibility guidelines from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, developed by a working group within the World Wide Web Consortium, as well as a number of design principles and heuristics outlined in this paper. We also conducted several usability tests on users from our intended target group. All the measures taken were an effort to ensure that Larmbolaget’s website be as accessible and usable as possible.

    Our conclusion is that the resulting website does comply with the accessibility guidelines and design principles described in this paper, and thus we consider it to be accessible and usable to a wide range of users, including those with disabilities.

    Abstract [en]

    In recent years, the use of internal social networks (ISN) has significantly increased. One reason for this may be due to the increased use of public social networks (such as Facebook or Twitter) during working hours. This tends to lower the morale and efficiency of employees. An ISN basically acts as a social medium fixed inside a company or organization's internal walls and focuses more on promoting cooperation, communication and exchange of knowledge. As one would implement an ISN within a corporation to mainly find and share knowledge. This thesis investigates how to implement an ISN in a smaller company and getting it to live within the organization. In this thesis, I will (based on the conducted methods) customize an interface for Xtractor Interactive AB in an ISN called Totara Social. The study will focus on three different factors that are developed to motivate the use of the internal social networks, in order to add value to the employees in everyday business.

    During recent years, the labor market has changed. Social media currently plays a larger role within recruitment for both job seekers and employers, while company policies and routines addressing background checks become less strict. The result of these changes are higher demands upon social media users to censure their online image. This study focuses on LinkedIn, which is a website intended to provide users with tools for career development. The study is aimed at user interaction with LinkedIn and how this interaction can influence career development. We take a closer look at what users ought to consider when they form their professional identities. The study demonstrates that LinkedIn can affect the individual’s career development, and that the greater responsibility for this lies with the user. The individual should be aware of and maintaintheir personal identity as well as understand the weight that interaction can have on visibility.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper, a study was conducted to explore social sustainability in HCI. The study focuses on people in destructive relationships and uses the notion of research through design to gain and share knowledge using design patterns. The study focused on creating methods for working more practically with social sustainability in HCI and used several design methods such as story share and capture to gain and share knowledge on the user group which was then presented in a pattern, consisting of a total of eight different patterns. The patterns was later tested with designers who suggested designs which users were then to rate from best to worst. The study show that design patterns can successfully be used to share knowledge, however the study also show some variation in how well design patterns are understood based on experience. Experienced designers tend to create better designs with the pattern than inexperienced. However, designers with the pattern designed better solutions than designers without regardless of experience.

    Social media is an important part of today's society and Facebook has become a place where more and more companies are being seen. With this, Facebook Brand Communities (BC) has become more common and a part of this phenomenon means that members use of electronic Word of Mouth (eWOM) has become important for the consumers and also for the company. In this paper, we investigate how and why eWOM are being used on Fredagspoddens vänner, a BC on Facebook that can be connected to several brands, such as Daisy Grace and Perfect Day Media, and that today has over 10 000 members. The investigation is based on the eight factors for motivating eWOM among users that Hennig-Yhuraus et al. (2004) describes in their article. These are: platform assistance, ventilating negative feelings, concern for other users, positive self-improvement, social benefits, economic driving force, helping the company and seeking advice. Theories on posters and lurkers are also being used, as user behavior is shown to depend on the type of user being investigated. In order to answer the question, a case study has been conducted containing three methods: observation, questionnaire and interview. Respondents for all methods have been members of the community. The result shows that members of the community can not only be divided into user groups of posters and lurkers, but that another user group, likers, are required to define the members that are somewhere between these two completely different user groups. It also emerged that connection between members is important for the members of the community and that eWOM is commonplace, both in terms of negative and positive parts of the community.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis investigates how web agencys in Stockholm use, value and incoroprate the terms usability, user experience and interaction design in their work process. The purpose of this study is to investigate how creative professionals works with the notions of usability, user experience and interaction design with focus on the end user. Our definition of creative professionals is every employee at a web agency involved in the work process of developing digital artefacts in any capacity. We wanted to investigate how these notions are considered, consciously or unconsciously, during the workprocess. Semi-structured interviews were conducted at three different web agencys with eight different employees. The result of the study has shown that all web agencys have a constant focus on the end-user during the entire development of digital artefacts towards their customers.This focus is kept during the whole process, from the development of a concept based on knowledge on both the customer and the end-users, until the release of the end-product. The work and design methods differs between the different web agencys in which way they incorporate end-users in the process.

    Abstract [en]

    Today, visitors use social media before, during and after travels to share, create and discuss content with others. This means that the visitor industry needs to profile themselves on social media to communicate their services toward their visitors. Parallel to this development, a creative tourist class has been emerging. This group demands new experiences that differs from a previous more conventional tourism, which is spreading among the public and is marketed more often on social media. This study analyze how the visitor industry experience the digital visitor and the new creative tourist class in Stockholm Archipelago. The result of the study shows that social media is a tool, which allows the people working in the visitor industry to multitask because they can bring it anywhere. Due to the digital visitors high interactivity online, the visitor industry are being challenged on both resources and knowledge. It is also shows that it makes it possible for smaller businesses to market themselves globally and easily reach their target group in a profitable way.
