    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to find out which attitudes, norms and values exists about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) families in preschools. Based on five qualitative interviews with teachers that work at a LGBT-certified preschool and one that is active in their work with norm critical pedagogy. To be able to fulfil my purpose of this study I concentrated on why these teachers believed that it was of importance to counter society’s heteronormativity, to prevent discrimination and mistreatments towards children and their LGBT parents in preschool. I wanted to find out what the teachers thoughts were on the concept of what a family is and how the diversity of families is shown in the preschools material and pedagogy.

When I analysed the results of my qualitative interviews I used queer theories that include heteronormativity and norm critical pedagogy. The interviews of the teachers showed that they thought it was of great importance to work with a norm critical pedagogy because they did not believe that society’s heteronormativity could or should rule in preschools. The assumption that the majority, to not say all of the children, come from nuclear families does not agree with the reality of many children in our society. To assume such thing can lead to discrimination and obscureness. The results of my study show that by reviewing your own norms and perceptions of normality, will allow you to work with a norm critical approach. It also gives you an awareness that will help you as an educator to make sure that more children and families feel that they are acknowledged and respected. The active choice of methods and materials in the preschool helps the teachers to ensure that the children can be seen and reflected on a daily basis. By questioning heteronormativity in preschool, teachers offer children more opportunities and presents different realities. It also helps them to develop measures to analyse the norms and not just assume that there is only one right way to live.

Konsten under jorden: En analys av Ulrik Samuelsons konst i Kungsträdgårdens tunnelbanestation2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the work of art in the underground station Kungsträdgården in Stockholm and discusses the observers interpretation of the art in the station. When the artist Ulrik Samuelson got his commission to shape the station he was influenced by Marcel Duchamp and the concept art. Two themes were integrated in the work of art, the actual culture life and the palace called Makalös, which was situated just above the currant station, three hundred years ago. The station was built in two stages.

The first part was opened in 1977 and the second part in 1987. Panofsky´s iconographic working method has been used in this essay. Accurate observations of the work of art and relevant literature studies are described in the study. Samuelson’s work has a lot of references to currant culture, social and political life of the time as well as so called ready-mades from Stockholm and artefacts from Makalös.

The observers understanding of the work of art is dependent on for example the observers age and knowledge. The parts that were present thirty years ago were known by people at that time but are hardly known by anybody nowadays. The modern young observers may not interpret every part of the numerous things and symbols although this will probably not prevent them to enjoy the work of art as a highly artistic production.

An Intramolecular Heck Approach To Obtain 17-Membered Macrocyclic Diversity and the Identification of an Antiangiogenesis Agent from a Zebrafish Assay2013In: European Journal of Organic Chemistry, ISSN 1434-193X, E-ISSN 1099-0690, no 19, p. 3955-3958Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We report a practical and modular approach to obtain two different types of 17-membered ring macrocyclic compounds through an intramolecular Heck reaction. These macrocyclic compounds are functionalized, that is, they contain two contiguous stereogenic hydroxy functional groups and an amino acid moiety in the macrocyclic ring skeleton. The macrocycles were then screened against a zebrafish assay to determine the antiangiogenesis activity of these small molecules. Macrocyclic compound 2.2a was identified as a potent inhibitor at 2.5 M, whereas its acyclic precursor and the other related macrocyclic compounds did not show any effect.

Especially Loved by Allah: Muslim and LGBTQ in Istanbul2011In: Temenos, ISSN 0497-1817, E-ISSN 2342-7256, Vol. 47, no 1, p. 61-76Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article builds on ethnographic fieldwork within the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer) milieu of Istanbul. It is based on material collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews with people who at the same time self-identify as practicing Muslims and have romantic and sexual relations with people of their own sex. The protagonist of the article is a pious Muslim woman who can be placed in the category of LGBTQ Muslims who do not seek coherence and are not involved in a reinterpretation of their Islamic tradition. The article explores the complex ways in which this woman handles the potential conflicts between her sex life and her religious beliefs, and points specifically to the way she supports herself on the firm belief that Allah loves and protects her.

Living Simultaneity: On religion among semi-secular Swedes2015Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims at contributing to a critical discussion on the supposedly far-reaching secularity of Sweden on the one hand, and on the incongruence and inconsistency of lived religion on the other. At the center are people referred to as semi-secular Swedes – a group that is often neglected in the study of religion. These people do not go to church or get involved in any other alternative organized spiritual activities, neither are they actively opposed to religion or entirely indifferent to it. Most of them describe the ways they are – or are not – religious as in line with the majority patterns in Swedish society.

The study is qualitative in method and the material has been gathered through interviews and a questionnaire. It offers a close reading of 28 semi-secular Swedes’ ways of talking about and relating to religion, particularly in reference to their everyday lives and their own experiences, and it analyzes the material with a focus on incongruences.

By exploring how the term religion is employed vernacularly by the respondents, the study pinpoints one particular feature in the material, namely simultaneity. The concept of simultaneity is descriptive and puts emphasis on a ‘both and’ approach in (1) the way the respondents ascribe meaning to the term religion, (2) how they talk about themselves in relation to different religious designations, and (3) how they interpret experiences that they single out as ‘out-of-the-ordinary’. These simultaneities are explained and theorized through analyses focusing on intersubjective and discursive processes.

In relation to theorizing on religion and religious people this study offers empirical material that nuance a dichotomous understanding of ‘the religious’ and ‘the secular’. In relation to methodology it is argued that the salience of simultaneity in the material shows that when patterns of religiosity among semi-secular Swedes are studied there is a need to be attentive to expressions of complexity, contradiction and incongruity.

    Abstract [en]

The thesis considers three women conferences arranged by the National Council of Women of Sweden (NCWS) in Stockholm at the turn of the 20th century. NCWS was a branch of the International Council of Women and at its height it was an umbrella-organisation for about forty Swedish women organisations. The focus is on the role of the conferences as arenas for women who wanted to prove their ability and competence in society. The content, the form and the function of the conferences are analysed.

The question whether the conferences arranged by the NCWS reflected the ideas, dilemmas and strategies of the bourgeois women’s movement is addressed. A larger historical development is illuminated – the formation of the bourgeois women movements for the public sphere in the process of modernity. The thesis explores different theories and shows how the concepts of class, gender, public sphere, modernity and trans-nationalism were dealt with at the conferences.

The women conferences have been treated as manifestations; as a quintessence of the ideas and ambitions of the movement. The thesis asserts that the ideology of the movements was formulated and expressed not only in spoken words, but also in festivities, symbols and sisterhood. The class identity was manifested in the form of which the conferences were conducted. On the one hand, the conference women showed loyalty to the conservative society and the rigid class position. On the other hand, the conference initiators wanted to improve women’s opportunities of becoming citizens and to move the boarders between the public and the private. Ideologies such as Internationalism and Scandinavism became important in creating a collective identity.

Mozart eller Mando Diao: en studie av Svenska Dagbladets musikbevakning 1980-20102010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Segmentation has long been used by companies as the main strategy to succeed in the marketplace. This method is mainly about dividing the marketplace into smaller segments, where individuals are divided according to predefined variables. These variables are based on the solid social positions of individuals, of a modern society and have been questioned by researchers who believe that this method should be reviewed. The reason is that the modern society is considered to have been replaced by the postmodern society, which is dynamic and fragmented, in which these variables are considered irrelevant. It is from this perspective that the term "Consumer tribes" was chosen to be studied in more detail in this paper. As a starting point, Bernard Cova's theory of the social link, has been used. The purpose of the study was to find out to what extent the idea of consumer tribes are present in practice. In order to investigate this, segmentation was chosen as a point of view inthe study. To carry out the survey, a deductive research effort was adopted with a qualitative method. The data has been generated from ten qualitative semi structured interviews that have been held with people who work in the subject area. The study's results show that the majority of companies are familiar with the concept of consumer tribes. Although most companies do not use the concept in those terms, the result shows that the idea is used by the companies in other terms. However, the traditional segmentation variables are most common among the companies in the survey, although someof the postmodern reasoning can be found in the result. Furthermore, it is noted that the most common way for companies to try to position themselves in the chosen customer segments is through different types of opinion shapers.

Lokalbefolkning och turister - tillsammans eller separerade?: En studie om turismens sociokulturella effekter.2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates how the host community of Tenerife perceives the socio-cultural effects of tourism on the island. The method chosen for the study was qualitative interviews which were performed with six respondents, each born in Spain, living permanently in Tenerife and employed within service-related occupations. The interview material was interpreted and handled according to a hermeneutic approach. The results of the study showed that the respondents had an over-all positive perception of tourism. Perceived positive socio-cultural effects were related to cultural and linguistic influences. Problems related to alcohol and community disorder were believed to be negative effects although they were not present to the same extent according to the respondents. The sociological theory “us and them” could be applied to this study since the locals chose to live and spend their free-time outside the tourist areas.

Det ligger i deras händer: En sociologisk studie om segregationen mellan Bredäng och Mälarhöjden2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to bring out the social economic residential segregation that exists in Bredäng and in Mälarhöjden by experiences and perceptions from local residents with a qualitative research. The study will also show how these expectations forms from local residents in these districts. Both these districts take place in southern Stockholm.

Bredäng, the public housing neighborhood and Mälarhöjden, the garden neighborhood are two districts that was built up during two different eras but has a social economic difference bigger than the geographic distance. The majority of the local residents in Bredäng are low incomes and have a lack of university or college education. The majority of the local residents in Mälarhöjden have a higher percentage of university graduates and the average income per year are twice the size of Bredängs resident’s. The main focus of this study will be to inquire into why the social economic elements lead to residential segregation in these districts, but also in how Mälaräng will effect on this. The main focus will be to examine why the social economic elements leads to how segregation forms from the expectations that exist.

It generally occurs similar beliefs and perceptions from all respondents about these districts. The results shows that all respondents confirms that it exist social economic differences between Bredäng and Mälarhöjden with consequences that Bredäng becomes the segregated district towards to Mälarhöjden that is considered the “fancier” district with higher “status”.

We have used the concept segregation that is central in this study and two theoretical points, Goffman’s identity and Elias and Scotson who writes about established and outsiders. We use the theoretical perspectives to connect the empirical part about how individuals form experiences and perceptions toward to the opposite district. We also find how identity creations forms from the categories that the individual gets.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this research is to investigate the group constellation that is, what thoughts, feelings and sensations that arise when students and pupils change groups. The study will also affect students and pupils knowledge of why they should work in groups. Their perceived security will also be something that this study is looking for.

The main questions of this study are:

    • How does students and pupils experience the phenomenon of "group replacement"?
    • What is considered to work or not work in the new group formations?

The method that is used in this study is based on six qualitative interviews with students and pupils from three different levels of education. The target groups are college and high school students. interviewquestions were structured and inspired to be conversation-like.

The theorys that are most relevant in this study are the theory about group processes, the theory about stages of development in a group and the theory about the need of relations and routines.

In summary, the results of the study indicates that students and pupils experiences of group replacement in school is influenced by various factors. The factors that influence students and pupils attitude toward the group changes are caused by the teachers level of commitment, participation in the working groups and the follow-up that is done after the group work. This study shows that pupils and students think that it is all right to change groups if they receive support from their teachers and managers. It is not the group replacement itself that is the problem for pupils and students, the problem is that there is not anyone there to give them support when they are in need of it.

Faktorer som påverkar goodwillnedskrivningen i svenska börsnoterade bolag: En kvantitativ studie inom IT- och telekombranschen2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In order to achieve harmonization and create a conformity of accounting standards in the European countries, the European Parliament in 2002 applied IASB standards and IFRS became mandatory regulations for listed companies in the EU from January 2005. Preparation of financial statements in accordance with a common and internationally accepted regulations would facilitate investors to evaluate companies in different countries. The introduction of IFRS in 2005 has meant that goodwill and other intangible assets are no longer amortized, but instead are tested annually for impairment, in line with IAS 36. Previous research has shown that there are difficulties with the implementation of IAS 36 since IFRS has been adopted as regulations for listed companies within the EU. There are no specific rules on how companies should do when they test goodwill for impairment which provides the management greater opportunities to influence the impairment of goodwill. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting goodwill impairment in Swedish listed companies in the IT- and the telecommunications industry. A quantitative method and deductive approach has been used in this study. Data collection was based on the annual reports of listed companies in the IT- and the telecommunications industry on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, NASDAQ OMX during the period 2009–2015. Studies results have shown that there is a significant positive correlation between the change of CEO and goodwill impairment. This result has shown that there is an incentive for management to act in their own interest at the accounting choices and this can give a misleading picture of the company´s financial position.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to investigate into professional knowledge of the bilingual teachers, compared to monolingual, and what benefits they give to pre-school. Qualitative method was used to get an understanding of informant´s perspective on bilingual teachers. The informants believe that bilingual teachers are able to understand all the children. A bilingual teacher can make the children feel secure. If one has a positive attitude toward bilingualism, the bilingual children also show a positive attitude that in turn contributes to learning and development of the language.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to clarify the importance of communication between parents and educators, as well as collaboration. The survey involves cooperation between parents and teachers in preschool and in the survey; it is the educators’ role and approach that is made visible. The issues I answer with the help of the interviewed teachers in the paper are:

    • In what ways considers the interviewed teachers that can create dialogues with parents about children's daily life and activities?
    • How do you describe the interviewed teachers that they interact with parents in preschool and the various forms of collaboration describe the interviewed teachers that they use in preschool?
    • What difficulties consider the interviewed teachers may apply when creating dialogues and cooperation with parents in preschool

Using a qualitative research method, the questions have been answered in the paper.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is a textbook study where I aim to review four textbooks regarding some historical events in the subject History. The textbooks are used in junior high school and the historical events are as follows: the genocide that happened in Congo during the leadership of king Leopold II, the genocide on Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, the Holocaust and the Vietnam War.

By performing this study I wanted to answer these three questions:

    1. What differences and similarities can be found in how the events circumscribed?
    2. How much space do the various events have and has it evolved through the years 1980-2009?
    3. How can this be explained?

The study has been analyzed from a post-colonial perspective and the recurring patterns that appear show how the texts are post-colonial. This means that the authors of the textbooks are writing about the same subjects, but in very different ways.

"Det hade ju varit värre om det var gris": en jämförande studie om matreglerna inom islam2013Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Health Effects of Overweight and Obesity in 195 Countries over 25 Years2017In: New England Journal of Medicine, ISSN 0028-4793, E-ISSN 1533-4406, Vol. 377, no 1, p. 13-27Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND Although the rising pandemic of obesity has received major attention in many countries, the effects of this attention on trends and the disease burden of obesity remain uncertain. METHODS We analyzed data from 68.5 million persons to assess the trends in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adults between 1980 and 2015. Using the Global Burden of Disease study data and methods, we also quantified the burden of disease related to high body-mass index (BMI), according to age, sex, cause, and BMI in 195 countries between 1990 and 2015. RESULTS In 2015, a total of 107.7 million children and 603.7 million adults were obese. Since 1980, the prevalence of obesity has doubled in more than 70 countries and has continuously increased in most other countries. Although the prevalence of obesity among children has been lower than that among adults, the rate of increase in childhood obesity in many countries has been greater than the rate of increase in adult obesity. High BMI accounted for 4.0 million deaths globally, nearly 40% of which occurred in persons who were not obese. More than two thirds of deaths related to high BMI were due to cardiovascular disease. The disease burden related to high BMI has increased since 1990; however, the rate of this increase has been attenuated owing to decreases in underlying rates of death from cardiovascular disease. CONCLUSIONS The rapid increase in the prevalence and disease burden of elevated BMI highlights the need for continued focus on surveillance of BMI and identification, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based interventions to address this problem. Abstract [en]

This work is a qualitative study that aims to create a deeper knowledge regarding teacher's perceptions on gender and gender equality in an intercultural preschool. This study also clarifies whether preschool can counteract the stereotypicaltraditional gender norms andif so, how it iscapable todo that. Based on a social constructivistperspective,in this study I indicate that children constructgender through interaction with othersin different social contexts. Additionally, based on intersectional perspective, I suggest that it is the relationship between various categories such as ethnicity and gender which is detrimental in constructing gender for preschool children. For example, in meeting with other cultures boys may gain more value than girls. The method of the study is based on interviews and observations and for interpretation of the collected data Iused literature and web based documents. The results show that preschool teachers have some degree of awareness when it comes to gender and equality between sexes. In accordance with this study teachers have enough knowledge about the importance of language in communication with children and they show good ability to distinguish what kind of influence language might haveon children's gender making. On the other hand, in pedagogical practical activities, for example in the design of physical environment one can notice some lack of knowledge among preschool teachers when it comes to creation of gender equality between children. Mystudy also indicates that parents from other ethnicities create inequality between children's gender, and preschoolteachers emphasize thatit is their duty to counteract such inequalities via intercultural pedagogy.

The Beauty and the Beast: Magical Realism in Salman Rushdie’s Shame2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Mild psychological effects, such as sleep-deprivation, on an oppressed and tortured human being can be characterized as “normal”. However, Shame by Salman Rushdie uses magical realist style to describe the psychological effects of shame in a patriarchal society which is based on capitalistic class values. This essay will focus on the Marxist feminist reading of the novel with a psychoanalytical perspective which is going to help analyse the effects of the oppressed female characters, Bilquis Hyder, Sufiya Zinobia and Rani Harappa.  The essay focuses on different incidents in the lives of these characters with the help of critics such as Aijaz Ahmad and Timothy Brennan. Both have written critically about Rushdie. This essay will discuss the different aspects of Marxism, feminism as well as psychoanalysis and connecting them to the novel, which would give the answers as to what shame can do to a person’s psyche. The Beauty and the Beast fairy-tale gets a different perception in this story, as Sufiya Zinobia is both the characters in one.

    Abstract [en]

Intangible assets have become increasingly more important in a globalized world of big companies that invest and operate in different countries. An important intangible asset is trademarks or brands. To evaluate a brand's value, there are several financial methods. A new standard called ISO 10668 Requirements for monetary brand valuation was published by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) September 1st 2010. The purpose of this standard is to evaluate in a reliable way brands in their construction, during possible litigation and in mergers & acquisitions situations. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the parties involved in the process of harmonization of ISO 10668 has developed a uniform standard by various conflicts, decisions, collaboration and compromise. The essay is based on eight interviews (with individuals involved in the development of the standard) and two documents. The results of this paper are the following:

    • The standard intends to be standardized by including transparency requirements that enable an evaluation can be audited by an external party.
    • To develop this standard, the working group consisted of different professions (consultants, accountants, marketers and lawyers) to cover different parts of the standard contains (legal, behavioral and financial analysis).
    • That there have been some conflicts and compromises in order to allow standard's existence. Conflicts have been on too many financial methods and the definition of brand. Compromises have included the inclusion of certain techniques and a new definition of brands. This has also led to the creation of internal groupings and that one country voted against the standard.
    • The standard contribution is a linking of former financial valuation methods with a legal and behavioral analysis.

If this standard is a standardized for the brand valuation is worth discussing. One problem that has existed with brand valuation is that there are numerous methods for valuing a brand. This standard consists of former existing financial methods with a legal analysis and a behavioral analysis.

    Abstract [en]

The auditing history dates back to the ancient Greeks who book kept and audited all transactions. During the industrial revolution the audit profession was born. In the 1900s the universities started to teach in auditing and bookkeeping and from there auditing has developed in a fast pace. This resulted in the establishments of norm setters such as FASB, IASB etcetera.

Sweden utilizes the IASB with some modifications which has been developed by Swedish norm setters like the bookkeeping committee, the accounting council, the FAR etcetera. As a response to the demand that all corporates were supposed to have an audit, the Handelshögskolan (the first university in Sweden which educated in auditing) was established in 1909.

The purpose of this essay is to examine how well the understanding of competence matches between new graduates and the companies which are discussed in the essay.

The essay is built upon the deductive method, where one starts from a theory to explain the reality. The essay also uses a case study which contains both a qualitative and a quantitative approach. The qualitative approach has been used for gathering information from the audit companies and the banks. The quantitative approach is applied for gathering broader information on students from Södertörns högskola. The theories applied in the essay consist of the competence flower which explains four different types of competences, and the human capital theory – provide for competence, which includes the development of knowledge over time.

The survey consists of four interviews, which include two audit companies and two banks. The two audit companies include Öhrlings Price Waterhouse Coopers and BDO Nordic. The two banks include Swedbank and Handelsbanken. The essay is also made up of 64 questionnaires from students of Södertörn University College with the direction to auditing & bookkeeping and financing.

The conclusions of the essay shows that all companies asked appreciate the social competence foremost. There is however some different opinions between the audit companies and the banks, where the audit companies require higher education while banks require work experience.

Another conclusion is that there exists a relatively unanimous understanding regarding the competence between companies and the students regarding requirements for employment, albeit with some deviations that are discussed further in the essay.

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Interplay between all the different subsystems of the financial markets is currently considered as an important internal force in the market. In a financially liberalized economy exchange rate stability is a basis for a wellbeing stock market. If these interactions between all the different subsystems of the financial markets are not detected, this means that there is information inefficiency in the markets.

Problem: Can we find any correlation between changes in currency, interest rate and bonds with the stock market index? If so, how do these changes affect the Stockholm Stock Exchange?

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine if there is any linkage between the interest rate, currency and bonds with the stock market. The researchers wanted to find out how these variables affect the stock market index OMX S30 which consists of the 30 largest companies on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.

Method: This research has been based on a quantitative approach. Three variables were selected to determine their possible linkage with the stock market index. We have collected the quantitative data from the CMC Markets and Swedish central bank in order to obtain the necessary statistical information. We have then examined the information in SPSS and Excel.

Empirical and analytical: The result shows that the government bonds which are one of the independent variables are significant explanatory variable for OMX S30. Interest rate contributes significantly to the model and is a significant explanatory variable for stock market. However, the currency has a weak contribution to the model which means that the currency is not a significant explanatory variable for OMX S30.

Finanskrisens och de internationella ramverkens påverkan på bolåneräntor: En studie av svenska respektive danska bankers bolåneräntor2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Nord Stream natural gas pipeline has been a controversial project. The debate was primarily escalated by Poland's strong negative reaction to the project in the spring of 2006 over safety and security and then alternated back and forth in Europe until the approval by the nations most concerned in the Baltic region during the autumn of 2009.In the case study an approach is used that primarily maps out the media image of the various viewpoints that deal with the pipeline and how these viewpoints position themselves, primarily through political and environmental dimensions. Simultaneously there’s an attempt to map out the spatial spread of the media image views as to the proximity and distance to the pipeline in Sweden, Poland and Germany. A key question is whether distance or proximity to a large facility can affect people's attitudes.A parallel focus of the study is to explore the role of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline in the cross-border hinterland region of Szczecin-Świnoujście. The complex cross-border relationship between Germany and Poland is characterized by the opportunities and obstacles to mobility & the potential of conflict between the needs of the individual vs. the state, partly due to an unbalanced hierarchy between the two nations. An understanding of the pipeline's impact on the border region is shown in part by an analysis of the city of Szczecin's theoretical potential in its hinterland, with special reference to the impact of the state boundary before and after Poland's entry into the European Union and the Schengen regime.Other contributions to the outline of this thesis deal partly with Medialisation and Framing, as the media-investigation in the study handles concerns, arguments and opinions about the pipeline-project, highlighted by the media. Another subject deals with risk assessment, as no one can be certain what will happen in case of an accident to the pipeline.A general concluding comment to the results of the media-investigation is that they are too parsimonious. However there are some assumptions to be made: In the resulting discussion it is argued, among other things, that from the political aspect both Poland and Sweden share a negative opinion towards the pipeline, while the opinion of German people appears positive to the project, according to the media viewpoints. From the environmentalaspect the over-all picture is that the opinions of the whole of Poland and the local levels of Germany and Sweden respectively (i.e. people living near the Nord Stream pipeline) are negative also – feel unsafe according to the project, due to the media viewpoints.A second assumption is that the media location does not play a major role in the way media coverage highlights the views of those for the pipeline or those against the pipeline. The overall impression is that the media coverage largely follows state affinities, in the sense that the relative openness of the argument that every state seems to represent, seems also to be reflected through media coverage in each state. The Nord Stream natural gas pipeline has been a controversial project. Inköpsstrategiska konkurrensfördelar: En fallstudie av H&M:s inköpsstrategi2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The globalization of trade, the rapid development of information technology and increased consumer demand has changed the competition in the fashion market. Due to the emergence of the Fast Fashion phenomenon - the fast and daily fresh fashion - the success of a fashion retailer lies in how quickly they are able to meet consumer demand; while its preferences today are instantly changing. The phenomenon has enabled the latest fashion to be available in stores within less than a month after it has been shown at international fashion shows. The consumer of today has high demands and the meaning of purchasing as a strategic competitive advantage for companies has therefore increased. To achieve this, the focus should be aimed towards a long term and effective relationship with the supplier.

There have been previous studies showing briefly how fashion companies work in relation to each other but not described in depth how their purchasing activities are formed. This aroused an interest in how fashion retailers in practice adapt their purchasing activities to the competition and its influencing factors. This thesis aims to identify the purchasing strategy of the Swedish fashion company H&M and any competitive advantages it bring, as well as underlying reasons for the strategy’s formulation. A qualitative case study based solely on critically examined secondary data has been conducted to answer these questions and to fulfil the purpose of the thesis.

Based on the findings within the study, H&M’s purchasing strategy is summarized as a self-designed model where the supplier is in focus. The company obtains competitive advantage through a strong, reduced supplier base characterized by close and long-term relationships with carefully selected partners. From these, decisions about H&M outsourcing all its manufacturing to create cost savings are made. The prominent feature of the identified purchasing strategy is the involvement of sustainability into all business parts. External factors such as the consumer’s everchanging demand and rapid development of technology affects the decisions taken and how they are implemented.

    Abstract [en]

In this study I have compared two different development methods of reading and writing. I have done this by interviewing five first grade teachers in elementary schools and it is based on qualitative research interviews. The aim of the study was to immerse myself in which methods these five teachers describe that they have used. They got to describe how they work and how they have tought the students to read and write.

I have investigated if the teachers think that the computer is a good tool. The investigation also shows if the teachers believe that the students´ writing skills deteriorate if they can use the keyboard instead.

I came to the conclusion that four of the teachers used Arne Trageton´s method (2005) which means that the students learn how to write by using to computer. One of the teachers mostly used Ingvar Lundberg´s method (2010) in the student´s development of reading and writing, which means that the students learn how to write. All five teachers think that there is no perfect method (instead of development methods of reading and writing). Everyone of them believes that it is up to the teacher to choose the method that every single student will learn best by. When it comes to using the computer they all agree on that the computer is a good complement to teaching. All five teachers don´t think that the students will lose their writing skills by working with the keyboard. They mean that the students still use the pencil often enough in their school work.

Humanity's Place in Utopia is Nowhere2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Utopia, the perfect society, is a concept linked with the perfect human being. These concepts are the focus of Arthur C. Clarke's The City and the Stars, and this essay will examine how the text challenges ideas of humanity and utopia. The two utopias are presented in The City and the Stars, with one branch of genetically engineered humans on Earth in each utopia. Their differences in approaches to challenges sets them apart. While examining the text literary and philosophical concepts of utopia and humanity will be used to better understand the text. The text shows us the significance of facing challenges. Moreover, that utopia, while desirable, is not for humankind as humanity's potential will not be reached when it resides in a utopia.  Humanity is defined by complex emotions that are hard to allow to exist in utopias.

The Patterns of Democratic Backsliding: A systematic comparison of Hungary, Turkey and Venezuela2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation attempts to answer the research question on whether there is a common pattern of democratic backsliding. Levitsky and Ziblatt’s theoretical model of democratic backsliding is utilized as the guiding theory. The theory suggests that Democratic Backsliding has three stages where different goals are attempted to be achieved. The goals are first to take over state institutions, thereafter to use these institutions to target political opponents and protect the government from criticism. The third stage concerns entrenching the political dominance.

The research question is answered by a systematic comparison of Hungary, Turkey and Venezuela. The results are that each case does follow the suggested path of democratic backsliding, with certain differences. More emphasis is put on the media, election monitoring, and how the institutions are controlled. The institutions are often taken control over by hijacking the nomination process, a fact overlooked by the theoretical model. These aspects are not expanded on in the theoretical model, and this dissertation suggest adding these to the model.

This essay is about women's role during the second world war, which occurred 1939-1945.Throughout the beginning of the war Sweden was one of the few countries that remainedneutral. Women in Sweden had an important part in the war effort, and a large number ofmarried and unmarried women recruited into different jobs, left by men. Throughout the warwomen were expected to mobilize themselves on the homefront. The purpose of this essay isto understand women's role in a popular swedish women's magazine, Husmodern.Advertisement and other kind of propaganda was provided during the war, one of the reasonwas to target women on the home front. But it was also a way to reach women and placeresponsibilities on them. My aim is to understand how the swedish magazine Husmodernportrayed women's role and responsibilities during the war. The conclusion of my study isthat women had an important role in Sweden, during the war. Women were expected to doeverything but in other terms. Already when the war was coming to an end, women whorecruited into different jobs and the women who worked diligently on the homefront, wereexpected to take the role and responsibilities of a housewife.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to compare teachers' differing methods of teaching mathematics and their perspectives on the learning process in a municipal school to a Waldorf school. The study has examined which approach best promotes student engagement and learning in mathematics in the first three years of schooling. The study is based on four interviews. The informants’ accounts are interpreted using theories from previous research. The study shows that the municipal schools and Waldorf schools use different methods in mathematics teaching. In the public school, the focus is mostly on the students achieving curriculum goals and passing the national tests in the third year of primary school. "Silent counting" and  individualized education” are methods that teachers in the municipal school make use of in mathematics teaching. In the Waldorf school students make their own textbooks, and through longer periods of teaching the teachers are aiming for deeper understanding of mathematics and its relations to the world around. The study favors the approach to teaching used in the Waldorf school in primary schools. It is assumed that students in a Waldorf school masters and have a deeper understanding of mathematics, than students in the municipal school where they work with pre-written math books.

Preliminary characterization of hemolymph coagulation in Anopheles gambiae larvae2007In: Developmental and Comparative Immunology, ISSN 0145-305X, E-ISSN 1879-0089, Vol. 31, no 9, p. 879-888Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Hemolymph coagulation is a first response to injury, impeding infection, and ending bleeding. Little is known about its molecular basis in insects, but clotting factors have been identified in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Here, we have begun to study coagulation in the aquatic larvae of the malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae using methods developed for Drosophila. A delicate clot was seen by light microscopy, and pullout and proteomic analysis identified phenoloxidase and apolipophorin-I as major candidate clotting factors. Electron microscopic analysis confirmed clot formation and revealed it contains fine molecular sheets, most likely a result of lipophorin assembly. Phenoloxidase appears to be more critical in clot formation in Anopheles than in Drosophila. The Anopheles larval clot thus differs in formation, structure, and composition from the clot in Drosophila, confirming the need to study coagulation in different insect species to learn more about its evolution and adaptation to different lifestyles.

Biltillverkares skuldandel och dess påverkan på nyckeltal: En studie om världens åtta största biltillverkare under hög- och lågkonjunktur2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
