Race and Racism in Russia2015Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since the 1990s, there have been striking changes in racial ideas, practices, exclusions and violence in Russia. By showing how the processes of globalization and racialization are interrelated, Zakharov seeks to demonstrate and explore the roles these play in Russia's new nationhood project. The book employs a new threefold theoretical elaboration of racialization, examining the process in terms of 'making', 'doing', and finally 'becoming'. These three elements are considered through discussions of a wide variety of aspects of Russian identity and nationalism, from the analysis of subcultures to explorations of nation-building.

‘Tolerance' Frame As a Hindrance to Effective Public/Authorities Feedback in Belarus2014In: RC36 Alienation Theory and Research (host committee): Post-colonized Eastern Europe: Overcoming Alienation and Social Fatigue, 2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The report is going to consider ‘tolerance’ as an ideological frame. A critical assessment will be done of tolerance on the part of Belarusian people.

It is going to be shown that a) tolerance as an invariably beneficent trait of the Belarusian people is quite mistaken, b) that the ‘tolerance’ frame interferes with democratic governance principles as accepted and practiced worldwide, c) that responses to public dissatisfaction (part and parcel of normal governance systems) in Belarus are complicated due to persistence of the ‘tolerance’ frame; and d) that for the more fortunate and sustainable democratic outcomes in Belarus a regular public/authority feedback should be restored by getting rid of ‘tolerance’ as part of the ideological apparatus.

The idea of this paper concerns ‘tolerance’ as it enters democratic governance schemes and might be leading to their malfunction. The word tolerance is widely used in liberal democracies and is ascribed a positive meaning. However, it appears that tolerance is not necessarily a virtue. The word tolerance has negative connotations as it acknowledges a problem. The danger with the ideological frame ‘tolerance’ is that it might enter democratic governance models where it can effectively block public responses to dissatisfaction. This way, the system is incapable of conveying public dissatisfaction, and the stimulus is removed for the authorities to improve their work. This might be evident in Belarus, where people have little opportunity to convey their dissatisfaction, given that they are considered as well as consider themselves ‘tolerant’. In this case, their tolerance, being mere holding on, is a potential volcano.

    Post-Soviet Racisms2017Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This book is novel not only in its theoretical framework, which places racialisation in post-communist societies and their modernist political projects at the centre of processes of global racism, but also in being the first account to examine both these new national contexts and the interconnections between racisms in these four regions of the Baltic states, the Southern Caucasus, Central Asia and Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, and elsewhere. Assessments of the significance of the contemporary geopolitical contexts of armed conflict, economic transformation and political transition for racial discourse are central themes, and the book highlights the creative, innovative and persistent power of contemporary forms of racial governance which has central significance for understanding contemporary societies.

    Abstract [en]

During the later part of the 20th century the amount of children and adolescents in Sweden who reported psychosomatic illness have greatly increased. The main reason is estimated to relate to weak resources in school and school healthcare. Increased resources do not always have to encompass investments for school and school healthcare. Other resources play an important part as well. A child’s domestic situation serves as one of those resources where fundamental knowledge and values are set. The purpose of the report is to examine how economic and social resources affect childens psychological illnesses. The report is based on material collected from “Barn-LNU”, a study made in conjuction with the Swedish Level Of Living Survey 2000 (LNU 2000). This study was carried out for the fifth decade in a row being financed by the Swedish Research Council and Swedish Council For Working Life And Social Research though their joint committee on longitudinal research. A number of variables have been chosen, treated and analyzed. The results show that economic resources play a role in adolescent’s/children’s psychological illnesses. In a family with good financial resources, psychological illnesses among adolescents/children are less likely to be found than in a family with poor economic resources. That social resources also had an effect on psychological illnesses was confirmed as well. The adolescents/children who felt that their parents were able to spend little time together with them reported psychological illness to a much greater extent in comparison with those who found that their parents spent moderate or much time together with them. However, there were no correlation between a family’s economical resources and parent’s time related availability.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the sharp criticism directed at video games that embrace different types of what I call progressive elements, primarily those that include diversity, representation, or deviate from traditional video gaming mechanics and norms. The study is a discourse analysis of YouTube videos, where the starting point has been how the arguments construct a problem in relation to these progressive elements, with specific causes and solutions. By deconstructing these statements and then reconstructing a chain of equivalence, i.e. relations between subject positions, this shows how a binary logic carries the discourse where a specific ‘we’, The Gamer, are up against a specific ‘them’, the Social Justice Warriors (SJWs). By ways of binary discursive exclusions, the groups are constructed as opposites. In the discourse, The Gamer becomes depoliticized by relating it to concepts of rationality, game culture and the free market, whilst SJWs are associated with censorship, ideology, and non-games. In this way, The Gamer makes invisible its association with masculinity and an often pseudo-meritocratic and Social Darwinist ideology, and claims an interpretative prerogative and oppose any kind of change, on basis of truth and facts.

No place for Yugoslavia: memory politics in Macedonian museums2014In: Research in Social Change, ISSN 1855-4202, Vol. 6, no 3, p. 249-281Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Macedonia is experiencing an active phase of construction and fixation of its image through the cultural institutions and monuments. Skopje is leaving through the memory boom. The monuments surround pedestrian during all his way through the city center. Twenty two meters high Alexander Macedonian sculpture become the keeper of contested equilibrium and there appears the feelings, that in case of his displacement from the post the whole construct of the monument codes will collapse. Public space of Skopje became a field of symbolic struggle. In the following article, we analyze how the socialist Yugoslavian period is represented in such new constructed image of the national history in museums. For this purpose, we use visual analysis and apply it to the Skopje history museum's observation. We show how the "antiquisation" policy of the state redefines the past within the historical revisionism approach and dismiss the particular period to the marginalized level

    Abstract [en]

Multi-faced Social Transformations: Challenges and Studies brings together the proceedings of the 7th Slovenian Social Science Conference, “The Challenges of Social Transformations”, held in September 2014. It was organized by the School of Advanced Social Studies (SASS), the Slovenian National Committee of the Management of Social Transformations programme (MOST), and the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO. The multidisciplinary contributions presented here analyse various aspects of the economic, social, and cultural transformations that accompany the contemporary globalized world. The book consists of four sections dealing with particular areas of transformations. These include a range of political, economic and cultural dimensions that are observed from the macro-level, in social systems and structural changes, to the micro-level, in aspects of individuals’ lives. The book will be of interest for academics in the field of social sciences, as well as for civil society activists and policy makers. The frames of the transformations are not limited to the European space, and provide a more global perspective.

Kan det vara för evigt?: En kvalitativ studie av det ökade skilsmässotalets upplevda påverkan på individers attityd till långa parrelationer2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine if individuals feel that increased divorce rates impact their attitude towards long-term relationships. The empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews with four young women who shared their thoughts and feelings about marriage, relationships and divorces. The study is based on theories about reflexive modernity and individualization (see Beck, Beck-Gernsheim and Giddens). The empirical data is also analyzed by Giddens’ theory of the pure relationship and his theory about the ontological security. The theory of socialization is also used along with Bourdieu’s concept of habitus.

The result of the study shows that individuals with divorced parents are aware of the increased divorce rates in society and that it affects their attitude to long-term relationships. This can be explained primarily by using the theory of socialization and the concept of habitus. The respondent in the study whose parents still lived together considered herself protected from the increased divorce rates and experienced therefore that this did not affect her attitude to long-term relationships. The more thorough analysis nevertheless shows that all respondents are affected by the increased divorce rates in society, even if the respondent with non-divorced parents was not aware of it herself. The increased individualism and modern societies reflexive nature can explain this. This result appeared even though the study in advance did not intend to distinguish between individuals who have been through a parental divorce and individuals who have not.

Akademiskt utbyte och internationell migration: En studie av stipendiater inom Svenska institutets stipendieprogram 1997-20152018Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In Europe today the wage gap between men and women and the low representation of women in top positions remains a major problem. Because of this, the EU has tabled a bill on quotas for listed companies' boards. The debate on gender equality is lively and topical.  In parallel with this act the enterprise companies is competing to attract the most competent employees and gender is considered an important component of being an attractive employer. As the study adopts a perspective of new institutionalism the assumption has been that the organizations adapts to ambient requirements to overcome social legitimacy and thus gender equality is an important factor of legitimacy in this process. This means that gender equality is moving towards a development whereby the institutionalized gender equality is becoming more loose coupled from the organization. In this context, the study has limited itself to two high-profile cases in which large companies in the industry worked together to publicly address the issues of gender equality. The aim has been to investigate how these organizations acted on surrounding equality requirements. This includes to examine the reports and texts that organizations themselves produced for its public appearance to find their purpose and underlying ideas of gender. Also, an interview was conducted with one of the initiators. Because of this a discourse analysis procedure were chosen for this study. The results shows that two distinct patterns can be detected throughout the various forms of institutional impact. The legitimacy formation mechanism lies in the quantitative discourse that includes participation of women. The organizations’ adaptation differs slightly. One clearly deduced to mainly protect members' autonomy while the second shows what is interpreted as an attempt at standardization of gender equality in the enterprise business. Maybe that the gender equality throughout these cases is following a development from a bill towards a standard.

ADHD - en del av identiteten?: En kvalitativ studie om kvinnors & mäns upplevda identitetsprocess i samband med diagnosen ADHD2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Having ADHD is a diagnosis that is becoming more common and is being talked about more in society. Through this qualitative interview study, we intend to investigate what everyday life looks like for those with ADHD and how ADHD affects individuals' identity creation based on norms, diagnosis and gender. The theoretical part of the study is based on the symbolic interactionism in which Mead and Goffman's theories are used to analyze identity. For the concepts of norms and normality, we have taken the help of Anders Östnäs (senior lecturer in social work) and Kerstin Svensson (associate professor of social work) to reflect on the concepts. In addition to these, Connell & Pearce and West & Zimmerman's theories of gender are also used.

The results of this study indicate that the diagnosis became part of one's identity and that norms in society were a contributing factor affecting self-image. However, there was no difference between the sexes when it came to how the diagnosis was expressed. We found small differences in identity creation but this is uncertain as ADHD is a diagnosis that takes on different expressions in different individuals and the basis was too small.

    Abstract [en]

The service sector in Sweden is growing. This fact, in combination with tax-reduction when buying household services has contributed to the growth of cleaning companies. Considering that the business of cleaning companies is growing makes it an interest sector to study closer. The purpose of this study is to investigate what motivates leaders within a cleaning company who are CEO´s and have ownership in the company. How does the ownership of the company affect their motivation? The methodology of this study is qualitative and resulted findings were thematically analyzed supported by the theoretic framework consisting of Maslows need hier-archy, Herzberg two-factor theory and McClellands theory on needs and motivation. During this assignment, two main themes were identified as sources of motivation among the leaders: flexibility and personal growth. The motivation of the leaders originates from what Maslow defines as need of self-esteem. Three of the leaders in the study found motivation with source in what McClelland defines as the need for achievement and one of the leaders showed a high degree of need of power and affiliation. The ownership of the company had a great impact on the motivation on the three leaders and affected the achievement in a positive direction. One reason is that the ownership in the company allows an entrepreneurial behavior, which satisfies the need for achievement among the leaders.

    Abstract [en]

Conditions for incorporation – experience of possibility is a study written by Hanna Öfors. It focuses on immigrants and their experience of the possibility to be included as a part of the Swedish society. This is done, by interviewing four people who moved too Sweden as grownups and whom, relatively speaking, could be looked at as cases of satisfying incorporation,   about their experiences of incorporation. The purpose of this study is to investigate and understand how immigrants look at their incorporation process and the degree to which it is possible for them to be a part of the Swedish society. Moreover, it is meant to identify the components that are important for them to feel included in or excluded from the Swedish society.  The frame of reference that this study is based on is built on three components, capital theory, concentrated on social capital, and theories about participation, alienation and identity. The three latest terms has added as a complement to capital theory. Recent research says that partnership and marriage has a positive effect on incorporation.    The results show that an individual ought to have a large amount of social capital, in at least one field, for them to feel a part of the Swedish society.  Employment is pointed out to be an extra important factor for this possibility. It is also shown that a relationship, such as marriage, leads to an increase in social capital. The same results are also proved in earlier studies.  By finding what is needed, for an incorporation process to be satisfying, it could be possible to influence the discourse around immigration and incorporation in a positive way. Hopefully this could lead to more favorable conditions for immigrants in the future.

Educational expansion and inequalities in mortality - A fixed-effects analysis using longitudinal data from 18 European populations2017In: PLoS ONE, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 12, no 8, article id e0182526Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to empirically evaluate whether widening educational inequalities in mortality are related to the substantive shifts that have occurred in the educational distribution.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data on education and mortality from 18 European populations across several decades were collected and harmonized as part of the Demetriq project. Using a fixed-effects approach to account for time trends and national variation in mortality, we formally test whether the magnitude of relative inequalities in mortality by education is associated with the gender and age-group specific proportion of high and low educated respectively.

RESULTS: The results suggest that in populations with larger proportions of high educated and smaller proportions of low educated, the excess mortality among intermediate and low educated is larger, all other things being equal.

CONCLUSION: We conclude that the widening educational inequalities in mortality being observed in recent decades may in part be attributed to educational expansion.

Ungdomars handlingsstrategier inför framtiden: En kvalitativ jämförelse mellan fyra högstadieungdomar från bostadsområden med olika socioekonomisk status2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how the connection with the foster parents and the contact with the social services affects a child during a foster care placement and later in life. Furthermore, it also examines how good connection favours a foster care placement and the contact with the social services. For the study, a qualitative method was used. Five interviews took place with adults who have, at some point during their childhood, been in foster care. Parts of Bowlbys attachment theory and Antonovskys (2010) idea of KASAM was used to analyze the study’s empirics. The result shows that all adults who got interviewed in this study felt they had good relations with the foster parents and felt safe in their presence during the time they spent in foster care. Four guidelines for a good relationship between a child and their foster parents has showed to be rules, structure, commitment and affinity. Children who feel insecure with their current relations have a harder time building new relations and will have a tough time creating good relations within the foster home. The Social Service Act demands that every child in foster care shall be assigned a social secretary (2015:982). Children who has been placed in foster care needs a social secretary that they feel they can trust, this will increase the possibility of good relations within the foster home.

Hur organiseras det oförutsägbara?: En kvalitativ studie om att hantera det plötsliga i jourverksamheter2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A society handle on one hand uncertain, unpredictable and incalculable events and on the other hand planned, calculated and predictable occasions. In this essay, I will investigate how these events and situations that we do not know anything about are socially organized. Sweden, among other developed countries worldwide, may be an interesting field of a new upcoming discourse of security and safety. New agencies in the form of alarm centres with on-call and on-site services are popping up more often these days. Two of those agencies are analysed in this essay. Earlier research on this theme handle phenomenon such as rationality, crisis, chaos and catastrophes. Also, phenomenological sense-making studies of organizations working with these kinds of events have been gone through.

The sociological theoretical framework of system and lifeworld, developed by Jürgen Habermas in his work of Theories of Communicative Action1 is the theoretical outset in this study. With mentioned organizations, at somewhat different domains, I have used the qualitative methodologies of semi-structural interviews and participant observations. Interpersonal verbal communication is here problematized together with technological and digital forms of communication. The result gave that some forms of systematic organized processes, but also reflexive and intuitive forms of action can explain the dichotomy of system and lifeworld in the structural middle level (meso) for investigated organizations.
