    Abstract [en]

This paper attempts to replicate a study from 2009 about users reading habits and the future of e‐books. Due to the increased use of smartphones and tablets since 2009, there is a reason to reasearch if the perception and use of e‐books has changed. The methods used is qualitative interviews complemented with an online questionnaire. The result is analyzed according to Rogers (2003) theory Diffusion of Innovations and the 5 factors that influence the adoption of an innovation. The result show similarities with the replicated paper, but also significant differences. The previous knowledge is not an issue for e‐book reading today, rather than the lack of the same reading experience as the paper books. The paper argues that reading e‐books on e‐book readers rather than on mobile phones, as the majority of the respondents, could make the experience be more positive and closer to the experience of reading paper books. As a conclusion this could be a first step toward an adoption of e‐books, and also a possibly issue for further research.

Miljöcertifiering inom frisörbranschen: Grön Salongs miljöcertifiering2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Do I Look Good In This?: How skilled players look upon cosmetic items in Team Fortress 2 and Dota 22015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With the growing popularity of the ability to customize your characters in video games, cosmetic items are becoming a big part of the gaming experience; games let players pick and choose what to equip on characters and what colors to use. In this study, skilled Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2 players were interviewed to gain a deeper understanding of the players’ experiences with the cosmetic items in their respective games. The games were chosen based on their well established system for cosmetic items and the authors’ previous knowledge of the games. The result yielded individual answers from ten different experienced players and were reviewed and divided into categories based on the patterns seen in the answers. From what could be seen from the results, the skilled players have a positive outlook on cosmetic items and believe that they have more than an aesthetic meaning, like for example that they can be a way to gauge player skill.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we examine how three different times for displaying information on a second-screen is perceived by people. The goal of the survey is to get an insight in how viewers perceive information displayed on a second-screen. We hope that the results will contribute to the design of future second-screen applications. In addition, we investigated whether the timing of when the information is displayed, affects the memory of the people using the second-screen. We performed tests on a total of 18 people with the help of three prototypes, each subject was interviewed afterwards.

En digital publikations skapandeprocess: Dagens funktioner och framtidsvisioner2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This project has aimed to produce and design the upcoming edition of the magazine application Scandinavian Architectural Review for the publisher It Is Media Svenska AB in Stockholm. The production has been based on the application’s prior graphic profile and has intended to follow previous appearance and functions without new additions. The entire production has been created using the Adobe InDesign plugin Adobe Digital Publishing Suite. After the production was finished an analysis of the completed application was performed according to a heuristic evaluation, which was based on the twelve design principles of David Benyon in a perspective of human-computer interaction. To support the analytical work an activity diagram was created to get a comprehensive view of the entire disposition of the application. The analysis has resulted in a list of actions and suggestions to improve the application and its usability, which particularly emphasize the need of a clearer design of the interactive elements, an improved system to give the user feedback as well as an increased consistency and flexibility.

Heritage, Emotional Communities, and Imaginary Childhood Landscapes2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Employing examples from maritime heritage attractions in Sweden this paper aims to analyze how heritage stakeholders situate their enterprises through unreflective references to childhood.

A pioneer in the business of shipwreck tours started a heritage project by trying to convince investors and to create general interest in the planned tours by thoroughly referring to the thrilling documentary films about the Titanic by James Cameron. In contrast to the logistically complex and not-so-dramatic shipwreck tours that were eventually realized, the pioneer’s almost boyish appreciation of the adventurous qualities of Cameron’s documentary conveys feelings of childhood. Another stakeholder in the same project recalled a media event from his childhood when he talked about his early interest of old warships at the bottom of the sea. Thus he told me in an interview about how he absorbed the live television broadcast in the early 1960s of the rescue of the seventeenth-century warship Wasa in Stockholm. A third stakeholder, involved in another maritime heritage attraction, referred to his seemingly happy childhood as a contrast to contemporary selfishness and gentrification that, in his view, seem to threaten the surrounding landscapes of his heritage project located on a an island where he spent his childhood summers.

One of several hot-tempered arguments in David Lowenthal’s classic work The Heritage Crusade and the Spoils of History (1998) highlights the importance of childhood in the discourses of heritage. Since heritage merely seems to be a conspiratorial celebration of the past for Lowenthal, the childhood dimension is treated as a tool that the advocates of a specific heritage deliberately use to legitimize their version of bygone days. My research on heritage attractions confirms Lowenthal’s claim that childhood is a crucial element in heritage. Through analyses of texts and interviews pertaining to the maritime heritage attractions in Sweden, however, I contend that the use of more or less salient references to childhood could be understood as unreflective and habitual articulations. Nonetheless, even though the forms of heritage attractions may vary and the stakeholder’s so-called personality may differ, the imaginary landscapes of childhood appear to function as central prerequisites in the enterprises of heritage. However, to offer a deeper understanding of how the uses of childhood work within the logics of heritage, I propose that we move beyond Lowenthal’s critique. I propose that the references to childhood could be related to the concept of emotional communities, introduced by the historian Barbara Rosenwein (2006). The emotional community for her is a group in which people have a common stake, interests, values, and goals. These are reached through representations of emotion within in a system of norms and convention. The analysis focuses on the fabric of a social community and how emotions are discursively expressed; not unmediated feelings or emotions, which is the case in psychology. I believe that an analytical approach that makes use of the concept of emotional community with the focus on the different uses of the feeling of childhood is a way to deconstruct naturalizations, hierarchies, temporality, and spatiality within heritage.

    Abstract [en]

The centenary of the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm included an array of diverse events. By the use of Maurice Halbwachs' concept of 'collective memory,' this essay takes a critical look at a few of the major events and official accounts pertaining to the commemorations of 2012. Methods used are ethnographic observations, at events, and qualitative analyses of texts, videos and photographs from the official records on events. A number of recurring and salient tropes used during the centenary resulted in an overall merry picture of the 1912 Olympics. Investigations on collective memory in Sweden usually tend to focus on party politics, especially the era of the hegemonic Swedish Social-Democrats. According to these studies the influence of sports seems negligible. In this study it is argued that the collective memory of major sports events, like the 1912 Olympics, in Sweden work as influential mental structures that can both confirm and challenge conventional Swedish meta-narratives.

    Abstract [en]

China is currently one of the world's leading economies and is ranked in second place in terms of GDP. In recent years, the growth of China's outbound tourism has increased rapidly. Contributing factors behind the increase are the new rules and regulations regarding outbound tourism, which gives the Chinese people the opportunity to visit more destinations worldwide. From the year of 2000 to 2012, China's outbound tourism has increased from 10 million travels to 83 million. With China’s steady annual population growth UNWTO, the United Nations World Tourism Organization, estimates that 100 million Chinese will be traveling before the year of 2015. The question is whether, and how, Sweden should attract the growing numbers of Chinese travelers

Scribble controls NGF-mediated neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells2013In: European Journal of Cell Biology, ISSN 0171-9335, E-ISSN 1618-1298, Vol. 92, no 6-7, p. 213-221Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Neurite outgrowth is mediated by dynamic changes of the cytoskeleton and is largely controlled by Rho GTPases and their regulators. Here, we show that the polarity protein Scribble controls PC12 cell neurite outgrowth in response to nerve growth factor. Scribble knockdown decreases neurite numbers and increases neurite length. This effect is linked to TrkA the cognate receptor for NGF as pharmacological inhibition of phosphorylated TrkA (pTrkA) reduces Scribble expression. Moreover, Scribble forms a complex with the MAPK components ERK1/2 in a growth factor dependent manner. In RNAi experiments where Scribble expression is efficiently depleted sustained ERK1/2 phosphorylation is reduced. Conversely, siRNA with intermediate Scribble silencing efficiency fails to match this effect indicating that ERK1/2 activation depends on basic Scribble protein levels. Finally, Scribble translocates to the plasma membrane in response to growth factor where it complexes with HRas and Rac1 suggesting that the phenotype activated by loss of Scribble may be a result of altered GTPase activity. Together, these results demonstrate a novel role for Scribble in neurite outgrowth of PC12 cells.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis examines the funding process for visitor attractions in the tourism industry. The purpose of this study is to describe how the larger experience attractions have sought various ways to finance the start up of their business. In addition, the study aims to see how companies in the initial process worked with business development and if and how it has affected the ability to realize the project. To answer the questions developed for the study, qualitative interviews were conducted with five Swedish established visitor attractions. An interview was also carried out with an entrepreneur in the funding process. The interviews were conducted to provide information on the funding choices made, obstacles encountered, how business development is used in the process and how the further financing of the attractions might look like. The results of the study show that venture capital, bank loans and “bootstrapping” has been used to finance the visit attractions. The funding of the project group was considered an important part of the start up process. The business plan has functioned as a tool to obtain funding in the development process at two of the visitor attractions. Access to the right people in the search for funding in the development was considered as an important part by two of the visitor attractions. Collaborations, a partnership and ancillary activity is also considered important for the continued funding of the attraction.

Sociala medier för marknadsföring: En fallstudie om vilka strategier som finns för marknadsföring via Facebook hos svenska researrangörer2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study, we have examined how Swedish tour operators are using social media as part of their marketing plan. Our purpose was to find out which strategies they use in the area of social marketing. The companies that were examined were Ving, Fritidsresor and Jambo tours, and the social network site that the research focused on was Facebook. The examination was conducted with a content analysis of the companies' Facebook pages and qualitative, structured interviews with the companies. The aim was to compare the various tour operators Facebook pages in order to get a broader overview of the companies marketing strategies. The results varied between the companies, but in many aspects they had similar strategies. The companies primarily use their Facebook pages to disseminate information, but also for communication with their target groups. This is also what previous research shows is an important part of the social media strategy.

Ekosystemtjänster i dagvattenarbetet: En studie om hur fyra kommuner i Stockholmsregionen nyttjar ekosystemtjänster i sin dagvattenhantering2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this report, I describe the practical thesis I conducted during the spring semester of 2015. I have studied the anti-drug / alcohol campaigns. I have studied campaigns from the 70-90's as well as the campaign “There are many reasons not to try drugs”, which was produced 2003-2007. I have also followed the campaign ”Langar Mythology”, which was launched in the spring of 2015. My focus has been on examining the film as a medium when it comes to anti-drug / alcohol campaigns. Why are films used so often in anti-drug campaigns? Do scare tactics work or is humor the smartest approach? I have produced three short films in which I visualized what I concluded in my studies.

Sociala normer i design: En multimodal webbplatsanalys av svt.se2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this essay we present a study of norms within interaction design. We have analyzied svt.se as an example of a news site with a public service duty. The essay aims so explore and highlight social norms and how they are embedded in the design. We also wanted to examine and evaluate methods and frameworks for studying websites as cultural expressions and carriers of social norms. To illustrate the purpose of the study, we have used guidelines for accessibility on web interfaces that SVT relate to in their website design. The study was based on a multimodal framework for analyzing websites and grounded theory. The study showed that svt.se provides an accessible interface that follows the guidelines the interface is said to relate to. We also saw a clear convention regarding how current events where depicted where both content and design interacted. The study also showed that the gender distribution on images on svt.se was even, but the images of non-white people and people with functional variants were less common.

Att varumärka en destination: Fallet Vaxholm2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The increase in tourism for as well Sweden and Stockholm’s archipelago leads to a heightened competition between the different destinations in the archipelago. There’s also an increase in branding cities and places around the word as well as creating an identity for tourist to recognize themselves in a destination. The creation of a place brand and identity may be one of the most important factors for destinations competitiveness. This study examines how Vaxholm tries to create an identity to influence the destinations current image. The aim of the study is to examine how a destination brands itself to mediate an unified image. The aim is answered by three different question formulations, which contains how Vaxholm brands itself by the cooperation between different stakeholders and how this cooperation is working. The data has been gathered by seven different interviews in a qualitative fashion with members from the organisation “Destination Vaxholm”. The respondents where both members in the destination as well some of them hade a more leading role. The empirical evidence has later been analysed through previous theories written in the field, which makes the study deductive. The results show that Vaxholm is branding their destination through the organisation “Destination Vaxholm”. Through this forum the different stakeholders are allowed to develop and reinforce events and activities, which currently exist on the destination. The members have a will to create an identity and image, which tells a visitor that, its possible to travel to the destination all year around, not just during the summer. The organisation is newly created which makes the cooperation between stakeholders new and the trust between them hasn’t been questioned yet. The result also shows that the organisation is democratic and the will to cooperate between the different members is vital.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper has been to study how users experiences and behaviors are influenced by a "like" function, when publication of images in social media with the photo app Instagram as the selected base. In this study respondents has been part of a study regarding their experiences and behavior related to "like" function in Instagram. The results of the question form have then been analyzed to find patterns in their behavior and to exemplify/reinforce different type of user-behavior found in related scientific articles.

The study has shown that the behavior of Instagram users is affected by the "like" function, when they believes that the function is a status marker that raises the interest for certain users by the number of likes. Through my results, I have been able to amplify and illustrate several theories of Goffman, Buckingham and Gripsrud which are presented in the report.

Sinnesupplevelse & Sinnesmarknadsföring: En fallstudie av spaanläggningen Yasuragi2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Strong customer relationships are important to a company 's profitability and when the demand for individual experiences increase it requires companies to develop and differentiate themselves through Unique Selling Proposition . Growing body of research suggests that the use of the five senses in the business and marketing can be the key to differentiation. It has become more important to provide consumers with an individual and tailor-made experience in which the senses have become increasingly important. The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze the utilization of sensory experience in marketing where we have conducted a case study on SPA hotel Yasuragi. We also divide the consumer group into two parts, the business guests and private guests, to compare the experience and the outcome of marketing. To answer this purpose, we have conducted a survey, a participant observation at Yasuragi and four in-depth interviews and a mail interview. The theoretical framework, empirical data and analysis is divided into three parts based on the concepts of Sensory Marketing, Experiences and Consumption. The study has shown that Yasuragi has every opportunity to work with sensory marketing as the tourism product stimulates all five senses. Yasuragi would be able to work more consciously with this form of marketing as it now occurs less planned. As it stands right now, there is not much differentiation in marketing to business guests and private guests. To succeed in sensory marketing focus must be on to convey the feeling and experience of a product / service instead of the actual physical product. Yasuragi must convey their sensory experience already in marketing where they can provide a taste of the experience.Touching as many senses as possible in an individual increases its interest and involvement of a product / service which also affects consumer behaviour. Through our own designed model, one can see that a company's Unique Selling Proposition should be as accessible as possible to the five senses to create a total sensory experience. Sensory experience should then be marketed to the individual who most likely will purchase. Sensory Marketing can also contribute to a stronger relationship between customer and company, as well as to a more profitable business.

    Abstract [en]

Activism and Civic engagement on social media have been taking place since they became a part of communication takes place in people’s everyday lives (Mihailidis 2015). This thesis aims to study the new opportunities for civic engagement and activism that have arisen through the growth of digital media. This work aims to study this by specifically studying how activism surrounding disability and disabled people (disability activism) takes place on the social media platform Twitter. Since the needs of disabled people are often not a priority in the development of technology (World Health Organization 2011, s.184). In this study a mediated community of disability activists and their activity on Twitter are studied using nethnography. The observations of which are analyzed through theoretical foundations in infrastructuring (Mosconi et al. 2017), design in relation to civic engagement (Korn & Voida 2015), and the role of mediated communities in activism (Fromm 2015). The primary result of the nethnography is the observation of how the disability activists appropriated Twitter as an infrastructure for their activism, as well as three analytical categories of the activity that was observed during the field work. Based on this categorization and analysis of the activists’ user behavior the main contribution of this thesis is formulated: A description of how disability activists engage in infrastructuring of Twitter to create a platform where their mediated community can engage in online activism and civic engagement.

Fysiskt eller digitalt?: En studie om konsolanvändarnas inställning till det digitala och fysiska spelformatet2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Downloadable games are more common these days than they were a decade ago. The prowess of broadband has made it possible to quickly download games and the market for digital games is growing steady. In this paper we study if the attitude towards digital console games differentiates from physical console games due to the growing digital market. We present and discuss console users’ attitude towards digital and physical games and their perceived value. From the quantitative studies performed we show that people prefer physical console games over digital, even though the digital market is on a steady climb. Based on the results we found the most common cause for the preference of physical copies was the possibilities the physical format entailed, such as trad- ing, exhibiting, refunding or borrowing.

ADHD och Instagram: En intervjustudie om unga människor med ADHD:s strategier för att hantera de negativa aspekterna av Instagram2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate how people with ADHD are affected by the social media application Instagram. The experiences examined are how three Instagram users with ADHD are affected by Instagram. If they find that there are some underlying needs and motives for why they use Instagram and in which case they are. Their diagnosis also gives rise to depressive tendencies and it is therefore investigated how they handle this when using Instagram. In addition, their strategies for using Instagram are investigated. How they help them to reduce the negative impact of Instagram. The study further develops this to examine how users want to prevent problems that exist with Instagram for people with a diagnosis. The study's theoretical starting point is previous research from state agencies such as Statistics Sweden and Stockholm County Council. In addition, scientifically reviewed articles are used. The choice of study methods is qualitative interviews with a strategic selection of persons diagnosed with ADHD and a literature study. The study's three participants all have Instagram accounts where they express their ADHD diagnosis. What emerges is the participants' own opinions analyzed with the data collected. This results in an interpretive result that can open up for a discussion on the subject and describe them with ADHD's own views on the subject.

Tablet application GUI usability checklist: Creation of a user interface usability checklist for tablet applications2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the world has seen a changing trend in computing power thanks to advancements in technology. One peculiar platform in the field of usability is the tablet. Due to its recent introduction, it has had a relatively short life span with few established methodologies. The tablet is gaining market share at a tremendous speed and thus there has been a big demand of the appropriate evaluation methods. This comprehensive study intention is to; through a literature survey and transformation of collected material identify what usability requisites there are when developing a user interface for a tablet application. Existing user interface guidelines from various companies involving the development of tablet software are examined and paired up with usability principles in the creation of the usability checklist. The usability checklist practical effectiveness is tested on various tablet applications and the results are compared to the results of a usability user test  valuation. The majority of the usability problems found by the user test evaluation are codiscovered, in addition, there were a greater number of undiscovered usability problems that was identified with the checklist evaluation.

Parks, Policies and People: Nature Conservation Governance in Post-Socialist EU Countries2017Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The national parks in the Carpathian Mountains along the Polish and Slovak border represent encompassing policy agendas that strive to balance biodiversity conservation and social welfare tasks. These countries have, during the last 25 years, undergone rapid transformation from socialist regimes to liberal democracies, and this transformation has affected the political, social and economic spheres. The accession to the European Union (EU) introduced demands for further changes, such as closer integration of conservation and socioeconomic development and inclusive, transparent and accountable decision-making that are based on participatory mechanisms.

This thesis explores key challenges and opportunities for nature conservation policy and practice at the local level in a context of post-socialist legacies and Europeanization. Multi-level governance, Europeanization, and post-socialist studies are used as theoretical vehicles for the analysis of four transboundary national parks: Pieninsky national parks (NP) in both Poland and Slovakia and Bieszczady NP [Poland] and Poloniny NP [Slovakia].

The results of this study show that the early designation of the studied parks as protected areas prevented their exploitation and enabled preservation of important landscapes, which currently are highly valued at the European level. These nature conservation regimes have created tangible restrictions on the possible economic uses of these areas. However, rural development alternatives depend on a broader set of local, national and global factors such as the structure of the local economy and employment, the prioritization of nature conservation in national policies, investors’ interest, and increasing urbanization. Europeanization provided opportunities for local actors to benefit from additional funding made available for nature conservation and rural development. At the same time, demands for participatory decision-making posed significant procedural and conceptual challenges to achieving transparent, inclusive and accountable governance. The prevalence of informal practices in local policy-making and the lack of trust in state authorities pose further challenges to formal participatory processes. The opportunities of local actors to reach out across levels to express their interests remain scarce and are not institutionalized, whereas the multi-level characteristics of modern governance indirectly shape local processes by defining common legal and policy frameworks.

Analysis of conserved microRNA targets in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

MicroRNA (miRNA) is small regulatory non-coding single stranded RNA molecule that can repress protein expression either at transcriptional or translational level. Since their discoveries in nematodes in the early 1990´s extensive research have shown that this mechanism is conserved across species. Because the miRNA is so small, about 22 nucleotides (nt) long and only requires a minimum of 6nt to interact imperfect with its intended target 3´UTR, therefore a single miRNA could potentially have hundreds of potential targets, which have been suggested by computational prediction.

The goal of the project is to experimentally verify three predicted Caenorhabditis elegans mir-2 miRNA targets in cell culture, with as candidate targets fos-1, mek-1 and sel-5.  In addition C. elegans mir-2 and its mechanism is conserved in Drosophila Melanogaster, miR-2. We want to elucidate if not only mir-2 miRNA is cross species conserved but also it targets. To test this hypothesis we selected the following predicted mir-2 target candidate genes: C. Elegans iff-1 and Drosophila Melanogaster protein ortholog eIF-5A.

Validation of miRNA and its functionality was done by transfecting cells with a luciferase-3´UTR reporter only or luciferase-3´UTR and a miRNA-expression plasmid. After the reporter gene was induced, cells were harvested and the luciferase activity measured and the results normalized and compared. Unfortunately our data were inconclusive and future experiments are needed to give a clear picture.

Democratization of the Republic of Azerbaijan: a study about the impact of socioeconomic development on democratization of Azerbaijan2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Democratization has been studied by several scholars, who have argued about significance of various factors for democratization of a certain country. One of these scholars was Seymour Martin Lipset and he claimed that there is a linear correlation between democracy and socioeconomic development. Thus, the aim of this study is to test Lipset’s hypothesis in the case of Azerbaijan, which is an oil rich authoritarian country. The study was conducted with the help of mixed analysis methods (i.e. combination of qualitative and quantitative methods) and a case study research design.  To measure socioeconomic development’s impact on democratization of Azerbaijan, some socioeconomic indicators were chosen in this study, such as economic growth, income inequality, poverty and unemployment rates in the country. Results of the empirical data analysis showed that, socioeconomic development has a positive correlation with democratization and therefore, Lipset’s hypothesis is plausible in the case of Azerbaijan. In addition, socioeconomic development has a great impact on democratization of the country, i.e. of Azerbaijan.
