  • 101. Danius, Sara
    Prousts motor2000Bok (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The author analyses the role of modern pieces of machinery whose purpose in Marcel Proust's novel cycle À la recherche du temps perdu becomes aesthetic. Railroad, phonography, telegraphy, telephony, cinematography, x-ray technology, automobiles, airplanes - all that passes forward in front of the reader's eyes, reinforcing the cycle's grand theme: The lost time'. Modernity, as Ms. Danius argues, brings about an emancipation of the senses in that the latter are no more merely an instrument of cognition but are transferred to the sphere of aesthetics.

Contemporary Capitalism, Crisis, and the Politics of Fiction: Literature Beyond Fordism2019Bok (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Contemporary Capitalism, Crisis, and the Politics of Fiction: Literature Beyond Fordism proposes a fresh approach to contemporary fictional engagements with the idea of crisis in capitalism and its various social and economic manifestations. The book investigates how late-twentieth and twenty-first-century Anglophone fiction has imagined, interpreted, and in most cases resisted, the collapse of the socio-economic structures built after the Second World War and their replacement with a presumably immaterial order of finance-led economic development. Through a series of detailed readings of the words of authors Martin Amis, Hari Kunzru, Don DeLillo, Zia Haider Rahman, John Lanchester, Paul Murray and Zadie Smith among others, this study sheds light on the embattled and decidedly unstable nature of contemporary capitalism.

Affect in A Small Place: Jamaica Kincaid Reverses the Colonial Gaze2015Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This essay uses Sara Ahmed's theory of affect to analyze Jamaica Kincaid´s A Small Place. I argue that Jamaica Kincaid uses anger to create a position for Western reader and to evoke emotions such as shame. Theorist Sara Ahmed argues that emotions have political dimension. Thus, I will use Sara Ahmed´s theory to examine what function anger and shame have in A Small Place. In her essay, Kincaid provokes her readers by attacking them for past injustice through anger. Because of this many critics have claimed that A Small Place has an angry tone. However, Kincaid´s aim seems to be to reverse the gaze by exposing the Europeans and Americans of exploitation, slavery, imperialism and colonization and this way reverse the traditional travel gaze, which allows us to see Antigua through the perspective of the third world.

    Abstract [en]

Syskonbädd, or “Sibling’s bed” in English, is a short story or drama, written by Swedish author Stina Aronson and originally published in 1931 under the pen name Sara Sand. While the story did not attract wide attention for many years, it has recently been republished and performed on stage, as well as aired on the radio. The plot is centered on Harriet, a woman who starts to see the world with different eyes, in a less strict and organized way. Her new view is welcomed neither by her husband nor society, and the book starts with Harriet’s escape from a “rest home”, where she has been placed by her husband in order for her to return to her old self. During the escape, Harriet meets several people, some like herself who believe that the world was meant to be different, and some who strive to maintain the social structure.

Swedish literature scholar Eva Adolfsson argues that Aronson’s later works take place in a landscape on the border of the wild, and that both the characters and the story move through such a landscape. I believe that this is also the case for Syskonbädd, one of Aronson’s earlier writings. My essay focuses on the momentum in the book, its double nature, the zone of uncertainty that it creates and the possibilities that it presents. Based on this, my thesis is that the idea of a “sibling’s bed” solidarity is a formula that drives the book; it is the engine for all movements. With a starting point in philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s and psychoanalyst Félix Guattari’s theories about literature, philosophy and art, I follow and analyze these different movements; the lines of flight that dissolve and create chaos, as well as the plane of consistency that holds the work together and on which the chaos is visualized.

These structural movements constitute my starting point for an analysis also on a hermeneutical level. Harriet escapes from society and from the norms that it enforces. At the same time, she seeks a new kind of community; a connection beyond knowledge that will allow new sensations. In this aspect, the outer movement of escape leads to another kind of motion, a static one, which may take place between people when they meet under such circumstances.

Röstgivande romer: En komparativ analys av Katarina Taikons Zigenerska Hans Caldaras I betraktarens ögon2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The Roma people have many times, and for a long period of time been described in a negative way, as a group of people unlike every other. Both novels and encyclopedias has been a part of this misleading discourse and therefore contributed to large misunderstandings. Also scholarly research from Sweden, and elsewhere, has featured inaccurate representations of the Roma people and altogether this has created negative attitudes towards Roma people which are still today a considerable problem.

However, the last few years positive changes has taken place and today the Roma people is an official minority group in Sweden which, among other things, has led to promising possibilities, especially in schools, for a deeper understanding of the Roma people in the future. Reading Roma literature I believe is an important part of this.

Katarina Taikon and Hans Caldaras both consider themselves Roma. They also have in common that they want to give voice for the group of Roma that has lived in Sweden since mid-nineteenth century. Even though one can’t claim there is such a thing as an overall Roma identity the two authors have, separately, given a picture of the Roma as a unique group of people with certain individuality. Although, their way of doing this is distinctively different from how it has been done before. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to describe how the Roma group identity is pictured in two books written by Roma.

When looking at the concept of identity and group identity from this perspective it becomes obvious that the topics of culture and ethnicity are strongly related. In this study I have performed a comparative analysis through close readings of the two books and looked at the Roma group identity as constructed by the sub identities culture, as “a way of life”, and ethnicity, as a production of identity through writing of history as well as a group of people with a unique culture. The Roma group identity has also been looked upon as partly constructed by people outside of the group.

The analysis of the two books has shown that the aspects of what describes the Roma group identity can be divided in to four different, but not independent, themes. The different themes have, one by one, shown examples of individuality concerning this group in relationship to other groups of people. Furthermore it has become clear that this group of Roma for a long time have been put in the role of being, and partly even being produced as, the “other” which also has impacted the characteristics of the Roma group identity.

Stavrogins lockelse: Om orientering och desorientering i Dostojevskijs Onda andar2015Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to explain the attraction toward the main character Stavrogin that the other characters experience in Dostoevsky's The Possessed, his great novel from 1871. I will mainly employ the terms “orientation” and “disorientation” in my analysis of Stavrogin's power of attraction. The theory used for this reading is principally inspired by Sara Ahmed's Queer Phenomenology – Orientation, Objects, Others (2006), and the meaning I attach to the terms “orientation” and “disorientation” is derived from Ahmed's use of them. Ahmed's queer phenomenology helps us to reflect upon how Stavrogin functions as a point of orientation in the novel. This makes him a demonic influence on the other characters, in the sense that he disorientates them.

The Possessed asks us what happens when we “lose our way”, and confusion as well as disorientation is a general theme of the novel. This topic has been raised before, but few have connected the demonic disorientation with the underlying unconventional desires, such as Peter Verchovensky's desire for Stavrogin. In this essay I attempt to show how Stavrogin can be thought of as a “new” orientation for the other characters, and how their following him causes them to follow lines that lead to destruction.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is a reading of Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 novel Rebecca from a queer theoretical perspective. The analysis discusses the fluidity of the character Rebecca, who despite being dead haunts almost every page. She embodies both masculine and feminine traits and is suggested to have had a sexual relationship with her housekeeper. Furthermore, this same-sex desire plays an important part in the sexual awakening of the novel’s young protagonist, who develops an obsession with Rebecca. The essay also looks at Manderley, the gothic estate where most of the plot takes place. Manderley is a place for both heteronormative oppression and transgression. Rebecca is a modern gothic novel and the gothic will therefore be an important part of the analysis.

    Abstract [en]

Travel literature and especially the ”adventure story” has excited young British boys for over two centuries. However, it has also been a vehicle for the assertion of male dominance and European supremacy. The story of a British man who goes to the colonies, performs some test which is essentially a test of his manliness, and whose compulsory victory marks the end of the book, has been a central myth in colonial masculinity.

Through looking at three Anglo-Saxon male travel writers from the 20th century, this essay aims to study the different ways in which Western male identity is shaped against an Indian background. The novels analysed are Topee and Turban or Here and There in India by H.A. Newell, the Don Juan- tetralogy by Carlos Castaneda and Are You Experienced by William Sutcliffe. Whether the Self is defined against the Indian other; by identification with the Indian other, or through deconstructing the notion of an Indian other, and what role femininity plays, are the central themes of this essay.

Theory paramount to the analysis has been Ann McClintock’s discourse on the feminisation of the colonized country; Simon Gikandi’s assumption that imperialism was crucial in shaping British identity, and Gayatri Spivak’s notion of epistemic violence.

    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this essay is to get deeper into the mysteries of love as they manifest themselves as most open: in literature. I have studied the two French writers Claire Etcherelli and Françoise Sagan, both writing about love in the 50’s Paris. While Etcherelli’s love takes place between factory workers, Sagan’s scene is the upper middle class. My question is how love manifests itself in such similar but yet different surroundings: is love a class question?

Looking at the structure present in the novels and how the love story proceeds, I have discovered that although the conditions are fundamentally different, the structure is almost identical. This is itself an ideological fact. The structure shows that in both cases, love appears as a solution to an unsatisfactory situation. The man enters the novel when the heroine knows she needs change. With him, she then embarks on a project for change. This project implies for Sagan a journey towards nature and the dissolution of the Self, whereas for Etcherelli it means a greater involvement in the political struggle and the constitution of an identity. The journeys undertaken are therefore diametrically opposed, yet the way they are taken about, is the same. Both authors present a vision of love that is comparable to many of 20th century theorists. Whereas some theorists, e.g. Denis de Rougemont and Slavoj Žižek, claim that love essentially is a lie: it says one thing and wants another, it is actually the want of suffering or a power game, others such as Erich Fromm and Francesco Alberoni speak about it as a revolutionary movement towards social change and knowledge of the human soul. Both Sagan and Etcherelli support the latter view. Love is in their novels a metaphor for hope, it comes forth as a firm belief in the possibility of change, social as well as existential.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper was to examine how ”the other” is portrayed in Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of darkness from a postcolonial perspective. Thru this analysis determine if and in what way the novel may be beneficial to education surrounding postcolonial perspectives in the subject Swedish at upper secondary school. Thru close reading of the text focusing on the novels portrayal of “the other”, the analysis concludes that the novel gives a stereotypical and dichotomous picture rooted in the novels contemporary science and culture of the western world. The way “the other” is portrayed in Joseph Conrad´s Heart of darkness does not consist with the fundamental values of the Swedish upper secondary school. The analysis has concluded that the novels potential as an educational tool in the education surrounding postcolonial perspectives is limited due to it´s lack of non-European perspectives.

    Abstract [en]

The absurd is a widespread term to describe literature today and in this essay I am interested in what parts of a literary text that can be defined as absurd. With help from the French-Algerian writer Albert Camus definition of the absurd in The Myth of Sisyphus (1942) and the absurd parts in his novel The Stranger (1942) I will examine the absurd in two of the Swedish writer Jonas Karlsson’s short stories. It is a phenomenological study of the short stories "Fakturan" and "Högläsning 2" that can be found in Spelreglerna (2011). The phenomenological reading consists people’s experiences and what is happening in their consciousness before, during and after experiencing it. Camus description of the absurd is the foundation for my analysis of Karlsson. Karlsson’s short stories have interesting similarities with Camus description of the absurd, which is fascinating because of their different backgrounds. My aim with the essay is to analyze the absurd in Karlsson’s short stories, both through parallels to Camus and without.

Sangvinolent berättande: En studie av Yu Huas roman En handelsman i blod2011Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The present MA thesis analyzes how body and blood functions as historical and narrative elements in Yu Hua's novel Chronicle of a Blood Merchant (1995). In the novel, the story and the plot can not be regarded as disparate items; the two levels of the text are tightly interwoven by what the thesis introduces as a sangvinolent narration. The term conceptualizes the use of blood as a structural element and the thrust of the text, in this case how the ability to sell blood is a prerequisite for the story and the plot.

Close readings reveal the structural correlations between the blood-selling main-character Xu Sanguan in the plot on the one hand, and in the story on the other, which can be detected to have, inter alia, an effect on the temporality of the narrative. Themes linked to identity, belonging and survival (performativity, mimicry, reification and alienation) permeate the text. In the novel the body and bodily fluids are sacrificed in order to form and enforce perceptions of identity and societal roles.

The rhetorical use of ‘blood and tears’ (Ch. xue yu lei) indicates thematic connections to the Chinese revolutionary literature, and furthermore, the use of flesh and blood can be read in relation to the cannibalistic discourses crucial to Chinese modernity since Lu Xun.

Spinnarfjärilens doft: En narratologisk läsning av Gabrielle Wittkops roman Le Nécrophile2008Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [en]

The present BA thesis is an analysis and a close reading of the French author Gabrielle Wittkop's novel Le Nécrophile (1972). The analysis consists of two parts. The first part focuses on the story and can be described as an attempt to interpret the engine of the history. The second part of the analysis focuses on the narrative; how the story is told. Le Nécrophiles main motif is re-encoding the representation of death in art and literature, traditionally conceived as a beautiful female corpse. The narrative embodies death as different of body types – men, women, old people, childen - and hence avoids to produce death as the female Other. By the use of different methods, such as metaphores, focalizing etc., the corpse becomes something more than a passive object, now threatening and interacting. In the novel necrophilia is described as a higher form of love. The historical view of sexuality as divided into high/low is strongly codified from a gender perspective; the higher form of love is associated with masculinity and the lower form with femininity. In Le Nécrophile the classification of high/low is based on life and death instead of masculinity and femininity; a new way of staging the binery pairs high/low.

    Abstract [en]

In the following essay I have read the drama Natten är dagens mor (The Night is the Day's Mother) by Lars Norén. My main focus has been on the older brother Georg. By using post structuralist gender theories I have sought answers to the following two questions: How is Georg's masculinity constructed and maintained, when seen from a gender perspective? What power structures arise between Georg's and the other men's masculinities? In my analysis I have approached Georg via three perspectives. First, I have by the help of Judith Butler's theory concerning gender performative actions tried to define the men's gender codes. I have used queer theory to show how the different masculinities can be understood as each others opposites. This way Georg's masculinity was defined as hegemonic in contrast to his brother's and father's. When Georg's masculinity is questioned he answers with violence in order to defend it. I have then used R. W. Connell's masculinity theory to show how the use of violence is a sign that the hegemonic masculinity is weak. The only power he has left over his brother's and father's masculinities is the one held by force and the one he has through his mother. As the violence increases, he loses power and as his mother suddenly chooses to stay with her husband instead of leaving, he has no other way out but to leave.

Can chick-lit be canonical?: a feminist reading och Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Candace Bushnell's Sex and the city2008Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

By using Austen’s and Bushnell’s two novels as my primary sources I hope to find out whether what has been seen as typically female themes, plots and settings are perceived as less important from a canonical viewpoint. Do the terms “chick-lit” and “women’s literature” determine the status of a novel? I hope to find out what made Austen an esteemed writer and if the same criteria of evaluation can be applied to Bushnell. Are there any similarities between today’ most famous “chick-lit” author who gained her fame by writing about women and their sex lives in an unromantic and shocking fashion, and a pre-Victorian author whose works are part of the literary canon?

"Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land": En nivåstudie av produktion, struktur, ensamhet och begär i John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men2010Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

My main purpose with this paper of John Steinbecks Of mice and men is to both analyze the long-lived structures and the unique individual destinies of the novel. I employ the method of the historical Annales-movement and use three divided levels in my analysis to try to capture these high structures and low moments of humanity in Structure, Konjuncture and the Individuality. The first level, Structure, is used to see how long-lived almost invisible geographic structures set the human act of condition. The second level, Konjuncture, is easier to grasp in understanding of time and embraces for example economic structures as the industrialism. The last level of Individuality is the fastest in time and easiest to understand but in the long run also the least important. Humans are controlled by structures and norms. I try to inspect what these three levels look like in Of Mice and Men and how they affect each other and the main characters of the novel.

I make use of Foucault and Butler in the Konjuncture-level to explore how power, production and discourse create structures that affects the working man and the “non-working” woman in Of Mice and Men. I adopt Butler to see how Steinbeck creates gender through clothes and working tools. In the Indivual-level we can see the effects of the other levels in the characters actions. For example how their sexual preferences are effects of the power-structure of the production (Rubin and Foucault), how a society see images of filth or purity when someone differ from the norm (Douglas and Foucault) and how we sacrifice one member of the social group to contain stability when chaos threatens (Girard).

    Abstract [en]

The idea of this paper is to try to give the novel of Gerd Brantenberg, Egalias döttrar, another profundity. To take the book to another dimension, by using the theory of Judith Butler, queer, and her criticism of the Monique Wittig’s earlier theories of the subject queer. I examine how the language is used through a queer analysis by performing a closely reading. My position is that the language assumes a heterosexual norm, which is unveiled by queer. Further I analyse the impor-tance of penetration in the heterosexual society.

Queera läckage i Henry & June ur Anaïs Nins ocensurerade dagbok2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The study analysis Anaïs Nin's work, Henry & June from a queer theoretical perspective. The purpose is to show what the work makes with text and how it produces ambivalence with sex and gender and thereby demonstrate the queer leakage in heteronormative performativities. The first part analyzes how it is working with self-representation in diary form. In order to view the work historically and linguistically the work has been related to analyzes and essays by other researchers mentioned in the analysis. The analysis shows that the writer Anaïs Nin has a clear agenda with her work. Nin want to develop an alternative approach to sex, gender and marriage.

    Abstract [en]

The main subject for this paper is to compare Eugene O’Neill’s play Long day’s journey into night with the Swedish playwright Lars Norén´s Och ge oss skuggorna. Norén´s play is based on a biographical material from O’Neill’s life; therefore I will also compare the play with two biographical analyses on O’Neill. For that I have chosen Doris Alexander’s Eugene O’Neill’s last plays: Separating art from autobiography and Stephen A Black´s Eugene O’Neill: Beyond Mourning and tragedy. The main question in this paper will be: what is the picture of Eugene O´Neill that Norén portrays in the play Och ge oss skuggorna.

Språket vår Järnbörd: Språket spelar roll2006Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I make an analysis of the play Järnbörd (By burning Iron) written by the swedish author Magnus Dahlström. In this play all the characters has committed horrible crimes wich they easily describes the violence. The starting-point of my analysis is the text itself and not any stage-setting. The reason for this is that I find it interesting to see what can be found in the text only. I investigate if the language itself can tell something.

Furthermore I discuss Magnus Dahlström´s literary language and if he has any distinguishing quality, and if so what it may be. I examine each characters discourse and I describe certain aspects of the language such as the characters incapability to really interact and how the violence is described.

I focus on the text and it´s characteristic elements. My main sources is therefore two literature studies. Dramatiskt berättande (“Dramatic telling”) by Mats Ödeen and Drama i tre avsnitt (“Drama in three parts”) by Gunnar Brandell. In particular I use the chapters in which they discuss the language and it´s significance in the world of drama. In the study Det moderna dramats teori 1880-1950 (“Theory of the modern drama 1880-1980”) by Peter Szondi, he writes about how the classical drama went from taking place between persons to take place inside the characters mind. I use this study to discuss Järnbörd as a modern play.

I also want to discuss the discourse from a philosophical aspect of language. I discuss Emilé Benveniste and his thoughts about language as a ”tool” of communication. Furthermore I discuss Friedrich Nietzsche´s study Om moralens härstamming (Geniality of morals), in which he writes about our human moral as something created and not as some “higher power” that judges us.

    Abstract [en]

This essay provides a queer theoretical, non-biographic reading of Karin Boye's novel Crisis from 1934. The analysis aims to focus on how Christian faith, constituting a major part of the book, can be connected to and be read as a symbol of heteronormativity. Furthermore the analysis describes how the queer aspect in the novel reveals heteronormative and intersectional structures. The investigation is set against previous research on Boye’s literary works, and other queer theoretical texts to show how the protagonist Malin Forst’s queer desire and identity develops as opposed to authoritative voices present in her life.

    Abstract [de]

    Abstract [en]

German-Jewish Nobel Prize laureate Nelly Sachs is remembered for her poetry written while in exile in Sweden. In this essay I have tried to examine how the exile situation shaped her poetry and what different kinds of stages the poetry went through. For example - how it went from being dark and painful when concerning the holocaust, into light and hopeful with reconciliation during the last years of her life.

The exile turned out to be a catalyst to her poetry.

    Abstract [en]

In this essay, I have analyzed both the Swedish and Danish debates about the insertion of a literary canon in school’s curricula. After a description of the terms “canon” and “cultivation”, I proceed to analyze debate news articles from both Swedish and Danish media to find similarities and differences in the arguments between the two debates. I then compare the arguments between both countries to find how Denmark could be able to implement a literary canon into the curricula, but not Sweden. I find that both countries have similarities and differences regarding the debates, and that although there are implications as to say why, one can not in truth conclude why Denmark had its canon implemented.
