    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to stress what experiences men working in the earlier school years share about being a minority group and what thoughts they have about why other men tend to avoid this profession.

In this survey I have interviewed four male teachers in the earlier school years. In previous research it is claimed that men choose not to get a teacher training for the earlier school years partly because this profession is known to be dominated by women where it is difficult for men to feel at home. It is also claimed that teachers in training choose the later school years in order to focus more on teaching than looking after the children. None of the interviewed men sees it as a problem being a minority group, neither during training nor in teaching. What the men in this survey state as the main reasons for why other men do not choose to become teachers are the low levels of status and salary. They also believe that the schools need more men but most of all qualified teachers who have chosen this profession because they take an interest in it.

    Abstract [en]

    My title is children in need of special support –pedagogues reason about their work and has focus on how eight pedagogues in preschool that I have interviewed define the concept children in need of special support and how they reason about the work with the children who they think are part of the concept. The purpose was to examine how some pedagogues in preschool reason about how they work with children in need of special support. My questions that I have assumed in interviews are;

    1. How do the pedagogues reason about the concept children in need of special support?

    2. How do the pedagogues reason about the daily work with focus on children in need of special support?

    3. How do the pedagogues reason based on the preschools approach about children in need of special support?

My conclusion in this study show, based on pedagogue’s reason, that the concept of children in need of special support is difficult to define because it includes so much, everything from diffuse difficulties to visible disabilities. Furthermore, the pedagogues identified that all children who show some form of difficulty are entitled to support based on their own needs and circumstances. They emphasized on the environment as an important factor in children’s development, because different factors can both enable and disable the development and strive to adapt the environment so that all children can participate based on their abilities. The pedagogues proceed from the individual’s difficulties to adjust the work outside the individual’s needs. A highlight in the pedagogue’s reason is how the environment affects the individual’s development, which I can relate to my perspective, the psychosocial perspective. The starting point in the perspective is how the environment affects the individuals development and how environmental factors affects how several an individual's difficulty will be.

    Abstract [en]

The text is about behaviour and appearance of boys and girls in the classroom in a gender perspective. How are the boys and girls placed in the classroom, and does this affect them in any way? How boys and girls are called on to speak. Is the teacher fare in the allocation of speech? There are a lot of differences between the genders, boys and girls are placed in a special way. In the two schools that I have done the research in shows that boys and girls are placed girl-boy-girl-boy so the boys can get more done during the class with the girls placed next to them. How and in what way they get the attention and the direction to talk is also a situation where they get treated differently. The boys often got to speak before the girls if there were waving there hands heavily for example and sometimes got to speak even if a girl already where speaking. The boys spoke whenever they felt like, even if it wasn’t there turn. This study is written to help teachers and for others to get a good look of the classroom in gender perspective.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this essay, I will look at three different Compulsory comprehensive schools in one community and I will compare final grades from students who graduated in spring 2006. I will also examine how the three schools work with students, and in what way they approach students with dyslexia/reading- and writing difficulties, so that they could reach goals set by The Swedish National Agency for Education. The aim with this essay is to show differences between schools in the same community and my question is if it is the way you approach students with dyslexia/reading- and writing difficulties that affects the student’s grades and results.

The study is concentrating on three schools in one community and students with dyslexia and reading- and writing difficulties that went to those schools. I have spoken to remedial teacher at each school about how they approach students with dyslexia/reading- and writing difficulties, what kind of methods the use, how they investigate if a student is in need of special help and how they grade their students who are in need of special teaching because of their learning disabilities. This essay will also present different ways of defining dyslexia and how to approach the pedagogic difficulties that will appear in situations where students with reading- and writing difficulties gets exposed and are in need of special education or help.

The results of this study can only be connected to those schools that have been studied for this exam. The results can not in any way be generalising for all schools in Sweden. However did the study results show that students that went to school 2 reached higher goals than students that went to school 1 or 3. The study also shows that these schools use different ways to work with students with dyslexia and reading- and writing difficulties. But to compare numbers and grades can’t give a fair picture of how each school work with each student so that they develop those skills and knowledge that is seen as necessary to become a democratic member of the society. Because numbers and grades cant tell anything about the student’s disabilities or what kind of knowledge or skills the student is in possession of. Nevertheless can this study when comparing grades, in the most general way, say that students that go to school 2 are more likely to reach goals that are set by The Swedish National Agency for Education.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about the pedagogical meal in preschool. In my essay I describe a dilemma where I, as a teacher felt stressed and insufficient as an educator at the lunch situation with the children in preschool.

I felt how the stress makes me unfocused. And I feel depressed knowing that what could be a peaceful moment aren’t the forum for learning as I know a pedagogical meal can be. In the essay I use relevant literature perspective on stress and how it influences the children and the teachers in a learning situation.

I will describe in what way a stressed meal has a negative effect on the children and me as a teacher. And how I, as an educator, can promote a positive learning situation and environment at lunch.

To get some perspective, I attended another school to observe the meal situation. The teachers have extensive professional experience, and are actively working to achieve a meal situation, in an non stressed environment suitable for learning. At the same school I also interviewed one of the teachers about her view on how a meal can become an environment for learning.

The curriculum 98/10 serves as guiding documents in preschool and is influenced by Vygotsky’s theory of language and interaction as a tool for development, therefore is his theories included in the essay to create a relevance to all active in preschool.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on qualitative text analyses of four works of fiction, used as teaching materials in the school subject of Swedish, from a queer theoretic perspective. The purpose of the study is to examine how sexual identities and expressions are being presented, as well as what positions are offered a reader, in relation to the heterosexual norm. Basis for this thesis are the schools fundamental values, which highlights the importance that intolerance be confronted through both knowledge and active measures, and the syllabus, which states that fiction should be viewed as a tool for identity development as well as an understanding of the outside world.

The analyses reveals a distinct connection between the generally accepted heterosexual norm and a professed (or taken for granted) heterosexuality which is being carried out by the characters or the books as a whole. Out of the four titles only one disputes this norm, by offering a wide range of sexual identities and expressions. These expressions, however, are being invalidated – through insufficient ability to relate to the norm – or made invisible – through an imagined heterosexuality which, by superiority over other expressions, excludes them.

    Abstract [en]

In 2006 the government assigned the Council of Cultural Affairs the task of making an update, consisting of 50 literary titles, to be added to the existing list called Alla tiders klassiker – en klassikerserie för skolan (All-time classics suited for school).      The idea of a literary canon can be considered to be a tool for transferring socially, historically and culturally constructed norms and values from one generation to the next in order to create and maintain a common frame of reference. The common frame of reference affect the individual's thoughts and actions as well as their sexual desires and their own perception of self as a sexual being. The aim of this thesis is to investigate how gender and sexuality are constructed in four literary works selected by the Council of Cultural Affairs on behalf of the government in order to create a literary classic series for school, and thus get a picture of which values and norms might be included in the concept of a common reference and how this subsequently relates to the school's syllabus and its ideas about identity development.

All four novels are based on traditional ideas and values as well as dichotomous relationships between femininity and masculinity in which masculinity is superior to femininity. The female sexuality is described as both passive and problematic while the male sexuality only exists as an unspoken norm.  The novels both create and maintain stereotypes that are in direct contrast to the syllabus and  relate to the problematic gender context that is already existing within our schools.

    Abstract [en]

My essay is concerned with intercultural leadership and practical knowledge. The essay is about ethical dilemmas and the diversity of issues we face constantly at the preschool. In my story I examine the different views of knowledge and the opportunities to lead people in an intercultural way, and how they relate to each other. I start by looking at the ethical ideas that form the basis for our actions and our view of knowledge. Then, I examine how the practical wisdom guides the ethical dilemmas that arise at the preschool. Thus, that leads me to the different forms of knowledge which are made visible in our daily work at the preschool, how they can be understood in the cultural environment in which they arise, and how they can be related to leadership. I show how the thinking ways and traditions we create shape the leadership. My inquiry is related to my colleagues since my professional role as a preschool teacher is made possible only in a social context with them. I find that the relationship between my own understanding of the practical knowledge and intercultural management can be related to my colleagues, as well as to parents and preschool children. The environment at the preschool is based on different ways of thinking and traditions that are transmitted and transformed in different processes. The inter-cultural leadership is questioned in the working group and the desire for authoritarian leadership is brought to question. Our view of knowledge is dependent on the ethical values we choose to make use of. Knowledge and leadership is created in a process that never ends, together with the people who create and recreate it.

    Abstract [sv]

    Sammanfattning

    Barn enligt barn

    Abstract [en]

The topic of this essay is about teachers, who teaches in the subject Swedish, opinions in a literary canon. This study will present how they argue about a formally decided literary canon and how the teachers argue in using canon in their education. I have used an argumentative analysis to analyse the teachers’ arguments. The earlier research in the field concluded that the canon debate is polarized and mostly discussing whether canon is good or bad, and not so much on trying to discuss it in a constructive way on how to use canonized literature in school. My research concludes that the teachers’ opinions on canon are essentially polarized, but many teachers also think that a canon is at the same time beneficial, important and problematic. A majority of the arguments used on both sides are the same arguments that are used by the scientific literary field which studies canon. The biggest difference is the alignment to an educational context.

The result show that the teachers’ use different pro-arguments and suggestions on how to establish a definite literary canon that could be used within the school system. Some argue for a formally decided literary canon established by the state and mean that the education will be equal and distinct, and students will develop the same cultural references. But not all teachers are positive to the proposition of a state established literary canon. The arguments on why and how teachers use canon in the education are similar to why there should be a definite literary canon in all schools.

The contra-arguments the teachers’ use for a formally decided literary canon are that it will intrude in the teachers’ possibilities to adapt the education to the students. They also use contra-arguments that says the canonized literature is not adaptable to the students’ interests and that it is narrow and exclusive. They also mean that it is time consuming and will remove teachers’ possibilities to plan their education and make it adaptable for the students. The teachers’ contra-arguments on using canon in the education are similar to the above contra-arguments that the canonized literature is problematic in the perspective of authors and adaptiveness to different groups of students.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to explore how well prepared educators at pre-schools are to receive children with another gender identity than their biological gender. The focus for the study lies on the discourses that exist in the pre-school regarding gender norms and how they become visible through the language educators use in the equal treatment plans, that are a part of the pre-schools value works, and in talks between educators.

    My research questions are:

    ·         How does pre-schools describe their work with children with another gender identity than their biological gender?

    ·         Which discourses regarding gender norms does the pre-schools equal treatment plans and group talks with educators show?

To answer these questions, I have used the analyses of five equal treatment plans and two group talks.

By analysing the equal treatment plans and the group talks with the four strategies for anti discrimatory education from Kumashiro, by letting the strategies make the discourses visible, I have come to the result that gender identity is made invisible in the pre-schools by the educators. The equal treatment plans contain descriptions of the discrimination grounds but not how the educators work with these in the daily workings with the children, and the educators describe gender instead of gender identity in the group talks. In my discussion and conclusion I reason about the causes for this in relation to previous research about norms around gender and gender identity in pre-schools.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate how learning intentions are sheared and clarified during lessons, as a part of formative assessment. Studies have shown that the capability of formative assessment is an important part of teacher quality and that clarifying the intention with the lessons promotes the activity in the classroom. My study is going to focus on mathematic in a second grade class. The three questions that I am going to investigate are:

    • How learning intentions and criteria for success are sheared and clarified in the instruction in mathematic?
    • How do the pupils describe what the learning intentions in mathematic are?
    • How do the pupils describe how they get to know the learning intentions in mathematic?

The method that I have used to investigate the first question is observation of eight lessons in mathematic, in two different mathematic groups. The second and third questions focus on the pupils and interviews with pupils are therefore used to investigate them.

Formative assessment and strategy one, clarifying and shearing learning intentions and criteria for success are used as a theoretical framework in the analyze of the results. The conclusions I have reached are that the mathematic book is a big prat of the lessons and both the teacher and the pupils make it seem like the main intention of the lessons. A summative test was done during the study and it indicated that high scores seem to be more in focus than the knowledge and understanding. Almost all the pupil that I interviewed describe their IUP-intentions (plan for individually developing) that they have been given in the beginning of the year. The pupils were not sure what the intentions meant and told me that they never used them after they get them, which they do in the Swedish education.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate how educational materials for science in the early school years are portraying information and facts. How the belonging educational manuals can be used as a complement to the content in the educational materials and their help for an inquiry-based instruction are also going to be investigated. Through analysis of the educational material and manuals, the following questions will be answered:

    • How is the content in the educational materials portrayed?
    • How can the educational manuals support an inquiry-based instruction?

The content is categorized as established, explaining, reflecting/analyzing or normative distinction based on the theoretical division by Ammert (2011b). Analysis of how the educational manuals promotes inquiry is based on a level division by Banchi and Bell (2008) who describes four different levels of inquiry. Confirmation inquiry to an open inquiry.

The results of this study indicates that the content in the investigated educational materials is mostly presented as established facts. Explaining and reflecting facts can be seen in at least one of the educational materials. The educational manuals can be a tool for teachers to make the instruction inquiry-based, but teachers have to make a lot out of the material themselves to reach an open inquiry.

A holistic approach to early childhood education: An exploratory study of a holistic approach to early childhood education in India2015Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (yrkesexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to explore the idea and method of holistic education and if traces of these can be found in four preschool teachers’ statements about their practices in two private preschools located in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Working holistically is something which UNESCO (Marope & Kaga, 2015) recommends when it comes to early childhood care and education. In a developing country like India primary education is important to growth and development. It is one of the main sustainable development goals and early childhood education is considered a means to reach this goal. This study aims to provide some insight into what a holistic approach to early childhood education can entail.

In this study I have explored literature to gain a theoretical knowledge of the idea and working methods of holistic education through a literature review. I then conducted a qualitative interview study where I traced the ideas and methods found in the literature in four preschool teachers’ statements about their practices to gain an understanding of what ideas and methods found in a preschool setting can be considered to lead to holistic outcomes. The results show that the idea and methods of holistic education, as I understand it through the literature review, were evident in the teachers’ statements to various extent, and that that inclusion, balance and connections lead to holistic education. Even though the teachers do not explicitly work with holistic education as Miller (2007, 2010) describes it, this study found that the practices of the teachers, as described by them, promote similar ideas and the same methods could be found. This study can provide a concrete understanding of what a holistic approach to early childhood education can and should involve.

This thesis aims to examine how teachers who teach the Swedish subject, uses film in their education. The survey was given to 30 of these teachers in Nykoping, half which are working in junior high schools, and half which are working in high schools. One important

condition to this works implementation, is the existence of the widen text concept that points to that all media is a concept that can be read and analysed. This is the attitude that The National Agency for Education aims at in different govern documents. The National Agency for education also request teachers to give the students tools to the media literacy that the society demands. To be able to interpret and analyse film is part of this media literacy. This papers result is that the majority of the selected group are showing film in their teaching, however not more than once or twice per year. The premier reason to why they are showing film is to complement their literature education and to create a foundation for discussion.

    Abstract [en]

I hope this scientific essay can shed som light over how guilt kan appear at a school, primarily for those working as fritidslärare. Fritidslärare come often in close contact with special needs children. In the story I shall recount a case where I have taken the roll of carer and helping an extroverted pupil through his schoolday. He spends most of his time outside the classrum and is mostly with a special needs teacher. Generally his day is filled with rewards and punishment; methods that I find myself uncomfortable with. On one of these schooldays I find myself giving up on him. I see myself ignoring him, taking out my cell phone while he watches a film on the computer. In this situation I feel guilt. Do I have a bad moral standard or am I just acting in accordance with the situation? The question of how I deal with this guilt and what shape the guilt takes are two of the questions I pose to myself. I have made use of the Algerian author and philosopher Albert Camus and his theory of the absurd and the lack of freedom in our lives and how the absurd always stands in the way of total freedom. If we are aware of its existence then we can live with it and minimize its effect upon us. I will also refer to his novel The Fall (2007) in which the protagonist has long managed to avoid guilt and judgement. He comes to feel discomfort after an incident that he identifies as feelings of guilt. The guilt can be both collective and individual. In my text I shall concentrate on individual guilt. I, as an individual teacher, have my version of the truth whilst those around me have another. What does this imply? I also treat the mechanisms of control within the school that manifest themselves through reward and punishment.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine if the school's democracy project is successful. The objective is examined in relation to two specific questions. The first question is whether students, after completing their studies in civics A, understand the relationship between the concepts of human rights and democracy. The second is if the students understood the concepts of practical significance and impact on society and the individual. Variation theory comes from the phenomenographic theories and is central to this work. The approach to learning, in this essay, is a change in how a person experiences, understands or perceives a phenomenon. Variation theory focuses on a learning object and contextualization sees as crucial to how the individual perceives the object.

The study is based on a quantitative research method in the form of a survey at a secondary school. A number of students may respond to valuation questions about how they perceive democracy and human rights in practical situations. The results are related to curriculum goals.

The results of the study is not positive in relation to curriculum objectives, where many students respond negatively to questions.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to explore the expectations of the primary school on the activities of the pre-school. In order to limit the study I have chosen to compare the expectations found in two different schools. In the first case, the pre-school is integrated with the after-school centre and grade one to three (primary school), into the same building. In the other case, the pre-school share localities with the after-school centre in a separate building, with its own yard, within the primary school area. Since the purpose is rather comprehensive, it has been divided into sub-themes with separate set of questions. The sub-themes chosen are in themselves factors, which I believe to be of importance for the main purpose. I have used a qualitative method, why the answer may not be generalised, but give us a deeper understanding of the main question in my research, I have interviewed teachers and pre-school teachers as well as used curriculums and existing research, in order to shed light on the main question from different scientific perspectives. The result of this study shows, that the integration of the pre-school within the primary school, may be of great importance for cooperation and communication. The primary school’s expectations, however, seems to be more the result of the teacher’s and preschool teacher’s interpretations of the curriculums.

    Abstract [en]

We cannot say for sure that competitions in theoretical subjects has increased in Swedish schools. However, Swedish educators testify that the number of competitions in school has increased in recent years. Läsloppet is a reading competition aimed at third-graders, and is carried out in cooperation between the municipal library and the schools in a municipality in the southern parts of Stockholm. This case study examined how a third grade teacher reason about participation in this reading competition and how her class work with literature reading during the competition. Through a survey it also examined her students’ thoughts on reading in general and on participating in Läsloppet.

Within the theoretical frame of Aidan Chambers theories of reading environment and “the reading circle”, combined with various aspects on motivation, the purpose of this paper was to examine how Läsloppet could serve as a reading promotion tool, and what participating in a reading contest could mean for students’ motivation to read.

The questions used to answer this was:

    • How can participating in Läsloppet be described based on the concept reading environment and various aspects of reading motivation?
    • How does the teacher describe the participation in Läsloppet from an educational perspective?
    • How do the students experience reading in school and the participating in Läsloppet?

Results showed that students with motivation in reading benefits the most by participating in the reading competition. Students with low or no interest in reading seems to show low interest in reading even after participating in the contest. From an educational perspective the competition had some positive effects in creating a good reading environment for the class participating in this study.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines what kinds of questions teachers and students ask during science lessons in three primary schools in Sweden.

The study is based on the following questions:

    • What kinds of questions do the teachers ask?
    • How do the teachers describe the question asking behavior they use in the lessons?
    • How do the teachers follow up students' answers?
    • What kinds of questions do the students ask and how do teachers handle these inclass?

This is a qualitative study based on interviews of four primary school teachers and observations of their Science lessons, covering topics as the solar system, electricity and the lives of the magpie and the squirrel. The theoretical frame of the study is social constructivism, which focuses on how knowledge is constructed in the social context of the classroom through language and other semiotic means. The questions asked by teachers and students are classified into two levels (high-order and low-order questions) based on Bloom's taxonomy.

The results of the study shows that teachers mostly ask low-order questions during these lessons and that they ask three times as many questions as the students. In lessons where more “abstract” topics were discussed, such as the solar system, the low-order questions were more frequently asked by the teachers. The students asked questions when they were “invited” to do so and they asked more high-order questions during lessons where “abstract” topics were discussed.

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this study is to create an understanding of how parents and preschool teachers experience induction at preschool. The induction creates collaboration between preschool teachers and parents where the interaction and socio-cultural factors have been key theories for the work task.

The method used has been of qualitative nature where interviews were made with parents and preschool teachers. In these interviews, they shared their insights of how they experienced the interaction and communication during induction. I asked the parents what they felt was good communication and interaction during the induction. The same question was given to preschool teachers to respond to and also if there was something that worked less good during induction.

The results show that parents and preschool teachers feel that induction works well satisfactory and that it is important that the interaction work well between both parts. A good start encourages cooperation and communication between parents and preschool teachers, and everyone is keen on that the child should be in focus.

    Abstract [en]

Children's language development is highly connected to the success of every school. Especially when it comes to the children learning reading and writing skills, regardless of what method the schools use in order to achieve this. An early intervention can facilitate the learning of reading comprehension. Reading aloud and playing with the language learning is the greatest gift we can give our children and students. Children learn how to use a book by turning the pages and see how the words and texts are structured. Together you create a moment of closeness and discover how you can share your thoughts and experiences using pictures and words in the book.

The purpose of this study is to gain insight and understanding into how teachers motivates and leads the children towards the discovering their own joy of reading. These also include those children that would rather play than sitting still listening to children's literature. The survey is a series of interviews with six class teachers from pre-schools in a suburb south of Stockholm.

The result shows that teachers believe that reading aloud and having follow up book talks are an important part of capturing children’s interest for reading, especially children who do not have their own motivation to be involved in learning to enjoy books. Reading aloud using intonation and different voices stimulates children's curiosity, and in turn this results in children themselves getting involved in the narration.

Dance as democracy among people 65+2020Ingår i: Research in Dance Education, ISSN 1464-7893, E-ISSN 1470-1111Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study sheds light on dance as democracy among people 65+. The article presents a study that is part of the project Age on Stage, in which elderly people were offered to express themselves through dance as an aesthetic form of expression. Hannah Arendt and Simone de Beauvoir are applied as philosophical lenses. Elderly people’s participation and involvement in dance activities are investigated and discussed. The specific aim is to describe and analyse contemporary dance as a form of democracy among people 65+. The following questions were formulated: What constitutes dance as communication within a group of elderly people? How do the participants internalise and use dance as an artistic form of expression in relation to the possibilities and limitations a workshop provides? A phenomenological analysis based on field notes and video recordings have generated the following themes: a functional body with impetus to move, to embody dance as a form of expression, to use Dance as a Form of Artistic Expression in Aesthetic Communication, and Reflections on life, body and dance. The results reveal existential and aesthetic dimensions of dance activities for elderly people that have not been emphasized to any greater extent in earlier studies.

Business as un-usual through dislocatory moments – change for sustainability and scope for subjectivity in classroom practice2018Ingår i: Environmental Education Research, ISSN 1350-4622, E-ISSN 1469-5871, Vol. 24, nr 5, s. 648-662Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper makes a contribution to the debate that has been described as a tension between instrumental and emancipatory educational objectives in environment and sustainability education. The contribution involves a methodological approach (introd-) using the concept ‘dislocatory moments’, to identify and analyse moments in classroom practice that address educational objectives relating to ‘change for sustainability’ and ‘thinking and acting independently’. A case of business education, when ‘sustainable development’ is integrated in a series of lessons, is used to exemplify the approach involving analysis of the emergence and closure of a dislocatory moment and the change of logics that occur. The illustrative case shows how room for subjectivity and change can be intertwined in educational practice. It is suggested that the methodological approach could be used in empirical research of classroom practice to further knowledge about the kind of situations that contribute to ‘business as un-usual’ without compromising emancipatory education ideals.

Talking about sustainability issues when teaching business economics ‐ the ‘positioning’ of a responsible business person in classroom practice2018Ingår i: Journal of Social Science Education, ISSN 1611-9665, E-ISSN 1618-5293, Vol. 17, nr 3, s. 46-62Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The paper presents a study of the roles of a business person privileged by teachers when the concept of ‘sustainable development’ is incorporated into the subject of business economics.

Methodology: A logics approach to discourse analysis was used to analyse the empirical material, which consisted of video recorded observations in five teachers’ classrooms collected two years after the inclusion of the concept ‘sustainable development’ in the upper secondary school syllabus in Sweden.

Findings: The results show how different rules and conditions for doing business are foregrounded in classroom practice. This in turn has different implications for whether a responsible business person is expected to: a) adapt to self-interest, b) respond to customers’ increasing interests in sustainable products, or c) be sensitive to the needs or interests of others (including humans, animals and nature), when making business decisions.   The results also illuminate how talking about ‘homo economicus’ as ‘real’ can hinder, how talking about customers in altruistic terms can facilitate, and how talking about the complexity of others’ interests can suggest ways of doing business (more) sustainably.

Practical implications: The empirical examples that illuminate the privileging of specific roles could be used for critical reflection in order to make students better equipped to address uncertain and complex sustainability issues.

    Abstract [sv]

    Logics of business education for sustainability2016Ingår i: Environmental Education Research, ISSN 1350-4622, E-ISSN 1469-5871, Vol. 22, nr 4, s. 463-479Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores various kinds of logics of ‘business education for sustainability’and how these ‘logics’ position the subject business person, based on eight teachers’ reasoning of their own practices. The concept of logics developed within a discourse theoretical framework is employed to analyse the teachers’ reasoning. The analysis takes its starting point in different approaches to how a business ought to or could take responsibility for sustainable development. Different approaches to business ethical responsibilities, in combination with assumptions about how educational content is legitimised and presupposed purposes of education, are used to construct logics of business education for sustainability. In the paper, the results of this analysis are presented as: the logic of profit-, social- or radical-oriented business education. Our results also show how the different logics position the subject business person differently, as one who adapts to, adds or creates ethical values. The results are first discussed in terms of how environmental and social challenges could be dealt with in the future and secondly, considering the risk of de-subjectification with regard to profit-oriented business education, the implications this may have for the educational quality itself.

A business to change the world: Moral responsibility in textbooks for International Economics2011Ingår i: Utbildning och Demokrati, ISSN 1102-6472, E-ISSN 2001-7316, Vol. 20, nr 1, s. 79-96Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents an empirical analysis of textbooks for International Economics in upper secondary schools with a focus on moral responsibility for the environment and society. The purpose is to analyze the meanings offered to students regarding the scope of taking moral responsibility in relation to the role of a business person. Four different meanings are formulated as a result of the study: one states that a business only can take responsibility in order to obey laws and respond to consumer demands, a second and third meanings imply that, a business can make demands, to different extents, on subcontractors. A fourth meaning include that a business (apart from making profit) also can be a tool for change. The different meanings are discussed in relation to different functions of education (Biesta 2008, Säfström 2005) and Education for Sustainable Development. The main argument is that a tool for change-meaning, contributing to a subjectification function of education, ought to have an increased space in education, if we want students who are engaged in sustainability issues regarding the environment and the society also to see a future working within the business world. This is equally important if we want business students to see a future working for sustainable development.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate formative assessment and formative feedbacks effects on students. One teacher describes through interviews her experiences of formative assessment and feedback. Also the students' perceptions are described. It is examined through observations, how different types of feedback is communicated by the teacher to the student and among students. This study wanted to highlight the effects formative assessment and formative feedback may have on their learning and motivation. This with particular interest in the Swedish lessons. I chose to concentrate on this following questions:

    • What types of feedback communicates from teacher to student, and students among each other?
    • How does one teacher describe her feedback and how it affects student motivation and learning process?
    • What is the student’s thoughts on the feedback they give and receive from each other and how it affects their motivation and learning process?

Formative assessment includes five strategies that shape the students to reach the goal in which three actors are involved. Those are the teacher, other students and the pupil. One of the five strategies is formative feedback, that can identify and provide the student information which helps the student to gain insight on how a task should be solved. Different types of feedback are identified by Hattie and Timperley and had the function as analyses tools in this study.

The method of this study was qualitative, though I have done observations in one classroom of 26 students for five days and interviews with one teacher and 10 pupils in the school year 3 (9-10 year-olds).

The result showed that the teacher used mostly process-oriented feedback and the pupils became to use it through time. The result also indicated that the students' learning process and motivation was affected to the extent that they were more independent, seeking feedback from peers and became more engaged in the lessons with time.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Studies show that the performance of Swedish students in the subject of mathematics is to be considered somewhat average. The government has therefore decided to assist with extended project funding to schools on a local level in order to improve these results.

Schools will, unlike before, practice teaching suited for the individual needs of students based on their previous experiences, knowledge level, language comprehension and their environment. This is also clearly stated in the Swedish school curriculum.

My survey shows how three teachers in primary school actually work towards individualized teaching of mathematics and what methods they prefer. This survey also answered what these teachers considered to be the obstacles and opportunities with individualized teaching methods. The difference in approach of how to practice this has also been documented.

The survey, based on interviews and class observations, have been analyzed and compared to previous research and theories in the field of teaching practices. The conclusion of the survey is that all teachers have a different opinion and approach on how to practice individualized teaching methods. The difference in interpretation of the concept is clear. The biggest obstacle is said to be lack of resources in the terms of work material and staff.

    Abstract [en]

There are shortcomings when it comes to recent studies by a Roma perspective on Roma culture and traditions. The purpose of this paper is to understand how the Roma present themselves in eight articles with an emphasis on culture, language and identity. The questions are as follows:

First, how the Roma articles manufactures the Roma culture and what do these articles say about culture, identity and language from a Roma perspective? Second, how can the Roma preserve and develop their culture and be a part of Swedish society in accordance with Articles?

Some of the findings are that the Roma language, Roma clothing and Roma music is part of the Roma culture. Similarly, social codes and traditions such as International Roma Day, which is a Romani celebration. Family dinners and celebrations such as weddings, funerals and other occasions is something that strengthens the Community and the identity of the Roma.

Modern Romani Chib today is a multifaceted language where there are multiple words for the same concept. Romani Chib has been developed in countries where it is spoken and had influences from the majority languages and thus has developed different varieties of the language. The result also shows a need for the Roma to organize. Moreover, the school's importance to Roma identity in which Roma classes are considered creating security within a cultural community, which in turn facilitates learning. In conclusion, the results also show that the mutual use of an intercultural perspective, the Roma minority and the majority could come closer together.

    Abstract [en]

This scientific essay starts in a story where you get to follow me in my work by three situations with creative problem behavior at the special school where I work. The story culminates in a dilemma where I ask myself questions about how I look at my actions and my thoughts about the student. I break down and put these thoughts into three questions: What is my student's perspective and how will it affect my actions? How can I explain my actions and attitude of the student from ethical perspective? How do my practical knowledge look like in the narrative situations and why do I act like I do?

My approach is to get answers to the questions by the reflection of the text itself, the reflection group and supervisors, as well as through literature that I find relevant to the issues. The process is like a pendulum motion between text, reflection and new understanding.

I look at my situations based on psychological theories about the treatment of persons within the autism spectrum of problems creative behavior. My ethical issues, I see from the theoretical perspective which includes Aristotle, Levinas and Kant.

I find that the answer to my questions can be paired with my practical actions. I notice that by putting words to them I get a new understanding of my actions. I see that most of the acts I do is based on the knowledge of my student's perspective and I find similarities to my situations and my acts to the literature. I approach it as my works practical wisdom.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how four teachers in grade 4, 5 and 6 choose to work with reading comprehension within the Swedish subject. In this study the focus is on the following issues:

    - How do the teachers work to get the students to understand the texts they are reading?

    - How do the teachers in the Swedish subject describe reading comprehension?

In order to conduct the survey, I have used two methods, these are interviews and observations. After carrying out four observations and four interviews, I have analyzed the empirical material by means of three theories relating to each other. These three theories are the socio-cultural perspective, reciprocal teaching and transactional strategy instruction. The result of this study shows that the four teachers primarily choose to let the students read short texts taken from a textbook, then let them answer questions related to these texts. This was reflected in the observations and interviews.

During the interviews, all teachers said reading comprehension is a very comprehensive concept that consists of several different parts, and that these parts together constitute the concept of reading comprehension. These include for instance, understanding the texts we read and being able to use these texts according to the teachers.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how four teachers in grades 4-6 work with genre pedagogy in the Swedish subject. In this study the focus will be on these two issues:

    • How do the teachers work with text types in the Swedish subject?
    • How do the teachers describe genre pedagogy?

I have used the two different methods which are interviews and observations in order to conduct the survey. I have also used two different theories that are related to the genre pedagogy in this study, these theories are the socio-cultural perspective and the circle model. These theories have been used to analyze the empirical material in this study.

The result of this study shows that all four teachers work with the four different types of texts which are fact text, story, fabel and instruction in teaching in the Swedish subject. Furthermore all the teachers work in the same way with these different text types in the teaching, this by working with the text types based on the four different phases that are in the circle model in the teaching. These different steps consist of knowledge acquisition of a subject, the study of the text type with focus on the purpose, structure and linguistic features of the text type, the class writing its own text within the chosen text type,  which is followed by the students being allowed to write their own text within the chosen text type. This was reflected in the interviews and two of the observations.

All teachers shared the same view that genre pedagogy is about a number of different genres. The texts that are written within a genre should consist of a specific structure, and language, depending on the purpose, situation and recipients of the texts, according to the teachers. This was evident in the interviews in this study.

    Abstract [en]

In primary school reading-books in Swedish language is something that students come across early in school and have done ever since the 1800s. After World War II there have been major changes in society. 1962 there was a school reform where the school turned into a nine-year system of compulsory education. That is why it is interesting to see what reading books contain with regard to notions of children, family and class and how the developments have been from the 1950s until the present time. This study aims to analyze and compare the different aspects of how notions of children, family and class are produced in the reading books for primary school for pupils in third grade, between 1950 and 2009.

    The research questions were:

    • What are the notions of children, family and class in the reading-books?
    • What differences/similarities exist in the reading books from the 1950s to the  recent decades?
    • What could be the reason?

I have chosen to apply qualitative text analysis originating in idea analysis. Because my focus was based on an attempt to track, analyse and compare the concepts, perceptions and representations of the reading books for third grade. My results shows that the children portrayed in the books from 1950-1965 are well mannered. And their relationships with the adults are strong and they learn from their parents, grandparents and relatives. The study also shows that the children portrayed in the reading books from 1976 and forward, make their own choices and play more major roles in the stories. The results show that the nuclear family is seen as an ideal. The study also shows that there are children in the book from 2009 who are experiencing economic inequalities in the form of clothes and other belongings. Overall, in the books i think that the middle class shows strongest but the markers seen in the stories are relatively vague to be seen in the stories.

    Abstract [en]

Background Children spend much of their time outdoor at preschool. Preschool's mission is to provide children with a rich environment that is enjoyable, and that arouses their interest to learn new skills. Since motor skills and health are positively affected by the outdoor environment should kids get a good turnout at their preschool playgrounds as possible.

Theoretical perspectives My study is based on theories from a socio-cultural perspective. The socio-cultural context is part of the outdoor environment because we experience and perceive nature depends on the society we live in and how we interact together

Purpose I want to see what kind of vision teachers and parents have on the outdoor environment when it comes to children's learning and development. I also want to find out how the teachers are using the outdoors environment and find out the parents' reason, when it comes to choice of preschool.

Methodology The work is based on qualitative interviews with two teachers and two parents from each preschool. I also conducted observations to my work. To my study, have i chosen to see the importance of the outdoor environment on one preschool run by the community board and one “all weather” (Friluftsfrämjandet) preschool

Conclusion My conclusion is that all the teachers think that outdoor education is important. The language is something they try to think of when they are outdoors with the kids. It also turns out that the parents from the preschool runt by the community board was dissatisfied with pedagogy and design while the parents of the “all weather” preschool had a more positive view of their. Majority of parents chose their children's preschool because of the geographical and depending how their lifestyle and background looks like.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine (from a didactic perspective) how two social studies teachers who work in two different elementary schools, grade three, pursue their oral instructions with subject terms. We have selected these four following questions as main evaluation points throughout the study, basing our conclusion upon the information composed from the answers: Which of the five “conceptions of high order thinking” do the teachers value as the purpose for the teaching content? How do the teachers in their use of notions relate to the needs of second language students and how do they reflect on it? How do the teachers use subject-specific notions in their teachings practices? How are students given the opportunity to use, communicate and integrate around notions and how are the teachers reflecting on it?

In this study we applied two types of qualitative methods. Six observations combined with interviews in the form of four short unstructured interviews and an in-depth interview with each teacher. Previous research shows that great linguistic skills are a common factor for success in all subjects. Our investigation has been made from a sociocultural theory that promotes learning through interaction with others as well as by receiving support from the teacher, through scaffolding.

Our result indicates, in conclusion that the number of second language learners in the class has an impact on how actively the teachers work to concretize abstract notions. The student population determines how they in teaching practices use notions. Social issues also decided how the teachers gave students room to use notions. For teacher no. 2 who worked in an environment where the second language students were a majority, a second language perspective was an obvious matter, whereas teacher no. 1 considered it to be a management issue and a collective responsibility.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In 2011, it was written in the School law that pre-school teachers has the responsibility to educate in pre-schools. The purpose of this study has been to make the pre-school teachers speech about the way of educate visible. Following, we have made this speech visible by a discourse analysis. The method used in this study proceeds from a social constructionist perspective and was performed trough qualitive interviews of six pre-school teachers. These interviews were analysed and the tool that we used to elucidate different discourses when it comes to the concept of educating was a discourse analysis. We have, in this study, noticed two local discourses; a school discourse and a status discourse. Within these two discourses there are a few aspects which describes how teaching is driven at each pre-school the interviewee is working on.The results of this study also shows that the speech within the two discourses challenges each other. The variations in these different ways of speaking indicate a collision between the two discourses.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this empirical study is to explore the manner in which seven preschool teachers perceive their work environment when dealing with stress. Interviews, combined with a questionnaire are the methods used in this study. During the interviews, they express their feelings and strategies for stress. Coping and the demand-control-support model are theoretical concepts that are used in this study. The results of the study reveal that preschool teachers feel that large groups of children, high noise levels, heavy workloads and high demands make them feel stressed. Their strategies to reduce stress were to divide the children into smaller groups, organize and prioritize their duties and help each other. The results show that a high job satisfaction among preschool teachers is beneficial in reducing stress. The conclusion demonstrates that preschool teachers need more time for planning and reflection, and fewer children in the preschool groups.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether and how three teachers’ ways of verbally asking questions and following up student’s utterances either create opportunities or hinderances for dialogue about religious related topics for grades 5-6. This study answers these questions:

    1. What types of questions does the teacher ask in the classroom?

    2. What types of response does the teacher give to the students’ answers?

    3. Do the questions create opportunities or hindrances for dialogue in the classroom?

The method used for this study is qualitative observations which were done in three different classes. Each class was observed three times. The theories used are Michail Bakhtin’s dialogic theory and Olga Dysthe’s theories about the monologic and dialogic classroom. Dysthe’s dialogic classroom is categorized into authentic questions, follow-up and positive assessment. IRE and IRU communication patterns are also used. The result differs in each class. Teacher A created opportunities for dialogue by asking authentic and closed questions, following up the students’ answers and giving a positive assessment. A reason for this could be that she sat down together with the students while initiating interaction and showing interest in students’ experiences. Teacher B created hinderances for dialogue by only asking closed questions and giving responses that indicated if students’ answers were right or wrong. Teacher C had possibilities to create dialogue by asking open questions. Instead, they hindered dialogue because the teacher gave a response that indicated if the students’ answers were right or wrong.

Hur barn i årkurs 3 uppfattar syftet med Nationella provet2012Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (högskoleexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This is a study of the national test in 3rd grade. The national test is obligatory and is conducted in 5th and 9th grade, but since the spring of 2009 the tests also become mandatory in 3rd grade. The case study of this research is to find out how children in 3rd grade perceive the purpose of the national test. The survey should also clarify how students think and feel about the national test, and how they feel before the national test and after they have finished writing the test. Has the test positive or negative influence on children? The survey will also show how much teachers clarify what the significance of the national test is for the students. The study was conducted as a qualitative survey. The testing was performed at two different schools. In each school the survey was conducted in two classes in which questionnaires were adapted to students from 3rd and 4th grade. Why I use two different questionnaires adapted to these two grades is to find out different aspects of the time before and after the national test. What appears to be obvious is in this study is that these particular students who have completed the survey have no knowledge of the purpose of the national test.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this study, we explore six preschool pedagogues’ experiences regarding the celebrations of cultural and religious festivals and traditions, and how this is noted in their respective preschool settings. The purpose of this critical study is to make educators aware of how children’s ethnic and cultural diversity is reflected in the preschool’s attention or lack of attention to different festivals and traditions.

The study is based on interviews conducted with six randomly selected preschool pedagogues from six different preschools from different parts of Sweden. Three of the preschool peda-gogues interviewed worked at “monocultural” preschools while the other three worked at what they considered as “multicultural” preschools. The results of the study are, that regardless of how the composition of the children’s group appeared, the preschool pedagogues’ reflections on their own situated experiences reveal the extent to which the festivals and traditions cele-brated are so-called Swedish and Christian. The festivals and traditions celebrated are e.g. Easter, Midsummer, Lucia and Christmas. Celebrations and traditions of a decent other than Swedish are not recognized in the same way.

Theoretically, this study is based on Sara Ahmed’s ideas surrounding ‘the hegemony of white-ness’ and the ‘phenomenology of whiteness’. For us, this important critical and theoretical re-source opens for future questions about how well established the white hegemony is in our Swedish preschool.
