Våga veta!: Om bildningens möjligheter i massutbildningens tidevarv2011Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines ideas about knowledge and cultivation (a word used in Sweden to describe integration of knowledge in personality and judgement) in two socialist periodicals during the 1980’s and early 90’s. KRUT, translated Critical Education Review, was founded in 1977. Inspired by John Dewey’s educational philosophy they argued that activity is the key for pupils’ learning. Four years later Äpplet, in Sweden meaning “the apple”, entered the debate estimating school to go back to basics: to let teachers teach and pupils listen.

My theoretical and methodological framework is discourse analysis. Language is viewed as an ever-changing structure where presence is determined by absence. Knowledge is certain, as Äpplet argue, in contrary to relative, as KRUT argue. These opposite perspectives follow historical patterns that can be used as support for different interpretations of socialism. Äpplet’s writers describe knowledge in what you may call a traditional manner, as a quantity alone, meaning the politicians’ task is to spread it to the working class, no differently from how they have always done to the upper classes.

But this notion of knowledge is at the time challenged by the increasingly accepted understanding of it as personal. KRUT followed a socialist movement that in educational reforms saw an opening towards an equal society. Their writers accordingly criticized the idea of objectivity to reproduce the bourgeois’ interests and world view. But absolute relativism combined with pragmatics lead to the paradox that knowledge is solely subjective and still is something (subjective). Writers in Äpplet and other socialists have accused the idea of relativity to be contra productive as it only diminishes the socialist cause.

As knowledge is viewed exclusively as a means in KRUT, there are no apparent differences between their definitions of knowledge and cultivation. The same inconsistency appears in Äpplet, but turned on its head, where knowledge and cultivation are both discussed as properties, which implicates that some are cultivated, whilst others are not. That these statements are only meaningful as antitheses mean they equaled each other out rather than challenging the political educational system. The debate arose in an environment where knowledge was politically marked as a question for macro-economics. It has been since.

Miljöpartiet och medierna: Idécirkulationen i Miljöpartiets möten med massmedier 1980–19822015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this master’s thesis in history of ideas is to investigate the idea circulation in the Swedish Green Party’s meetings with mass media 1980–1982.

The study is based upon a series of theoretical premises. It is presumed that cultural expressions, such as speech, media use and visual representation, can be understood through studying how people think about society’s history, contemporary development and conceivable futures. Since ideas about society’s ongoing development also are presumed to be intertwined with social and cultural positions and practices, and may be expressed differently given different social and cultural circumstances, it is relevant to investigate on the one hand the Green Party’s political vision, and on the other hand how the formulation and reception of ideas took place between them and journalists.

The Green Party’s communication to the Swedish public is studied through on the one hand their own media channels, and on the other hand a selection of events where they were covered in mass media, communicating to the public via journalists.

The study shows that the Green Party expected society’s ongoing development to lead to an environmental and human disaster, if not their vision of a democratic society, built on small-scale production, came true. These two conceivable futures were used to motivate political action in their present time. History, on the other hand, was used to criticize the present society built on economical growth and hierarchies. In the Green Party’s visionary society, mankind would embrace a natural lifestyle and thereby reunite with her, in growth society, lost democratic, accountable and creative nature. These ideas were related to societal processes, events and circulating ideas at the time.

To get their messages across to the broad Swedish public, the Green Party arranged a press conference. Partly adapting to journalistic working methods for covering politics, the Green Party staged their alternative, small-scale ideology materially, musically and visually.

The Green Party’s mass media appearance, along with their growth in membership numbers, made mass media coverage about them increase. In a parliamentary uncertain and politically hostile time, the party’s presented parliamentary strategies and political proposals awoke journalistic speculation.

However, journalists’ news telling about the Green Party’s politics circulated, in different ways, around their parliamentary goal, prospects and future obligations. Thereby conceivable futures, as formulated by journalists, gave meaning to the Green Party’s formation, development and politics.

These ideas were expressed in journalistic media use and interview praxis. Since around two decades, journalists were reporting more independently and confrontational on politics than previously.  Covering the Green Party, photographers, camera men and writers created meanings by using mediums, which sometimes were transferred between media forms, to support news narratives.

Consequently, a political party trying to change a political lifestyle and exercise reached the Swedish public through mass media as a party mainly competing for parliamentary representation. These results contribute to ongoing research on how, and on what premises, political voices have reached the public through mass media throughout modern history.

Gud, skapelsen och kvastfeningen: Utövandet av epistemisk auktoritet i 1953 års evolutionsdebatt2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine the enactment of epistemic authority by advocates of science and religion respectively in 1950s Sweden, an era of rapid secularization in regard to Swedish values and society. The study is based on a 1953 public debate about evolution and creationism, ignited by the discovery of a live coelacanth. Multiple secular media outlets as well as one faith- based newspaper participated in the debate and thus provide the source material, which in turn is analyzed with a method inspired by Foucault (1971). The theoretical framework is that of Gieryn’s cultural cartography (1999).

The study shows that faith-based actors arguing against the theory of evolution more often claim the authority and credibility of science than divine authority and/or biblical credibility in order to achieve their goal, even when addressing religious peers. The study also shows that secular media more often ridicule their religious counterparts than sincerely argue for science as a superior source of knowledge, revealing the apparently uncontested epistemic authority of science in 1950s Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

Based on 30 years of work experience in TV and film production, I have made a phenomenological analysis of my perception of meaning in work - how it arises and how it is undermined. The story starts in my experience of early professional film making in the 1980's and describes how a change to work in TV production required the development of a new professional identity.

The text also illustrates how as a female director I have managed my role in a male dominated and structured work environment. Being defined as an exception from the male norm has pushed me towards femininist reflection and the need to redefine my own work role - the generally accepted view having felt uncomfortable.

An analysis of structural change in TV and film production shows how market pressures and ways of thought have increasingly invaded cultural endeavour. Professional spheres of influence are weakened, while developments in the media are characterised by a commercialism which encroaches more and more upon artistic, spiritual and moral values. This attitude, where quality is in retreat, has transformedprogramme makers from creative originators into becoming suppliers of raw material in a factory- like process geared to produce great volume at low cost.

The aim of this essay is to show how changes in society and in TV and film making have affected my perception of my work. Structural transformation in the media has circumscribed the scope for creative play as an important source of energy and inspiration in work and it has eroded my feeling that work is personally meaningful.

    Abstract [en]

In the autumn of 1886 the editor in chief of the Swedish social democratic newspaper Social-Demokraten August Palm resigns and Hjalmar Branting takes over as editor in chief. This will lead toa shift how the newspaper writes about culture and general education (bildning in Swedish, after theGerman term Bildung which lacks an English equivalent). August Palm’s resignation and the shift inthe content of the newspaper is in many ways the culmination of an internal struggle within the earlysocial democratic labour movement where one side claims that culture and general education shouldbe made available to all, including workers, and that doing so will lead to the eventual transformationof society. The other side claims that the working class should indeed be granted access to culture andgeneral education, but first an economic transformation must occur. The dispute is over causality, thetwo sides in the conflict have different opinions as to whether the economic transformation of societywill happen before or after culture and general education is made available to the working masses. Inthis study I have shown how these two positions were not as clearly defined or as clearly opposed toeach other as they have sometimes been portrayed in earlier research. As I have shown, there was infact agreement on the basic goal that culture and general education ought to be something thateveryone can enjoy despite there being differing opinions as to how society might get there.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper concerns the ideas on society, policies and economic thoughts on Ireland before the cataclysmal famine of the 1840s. Senior, classified as one of the classical economists, elaborated these in the period 1829 – 1836, thus during the period of Parliamentary reform. As a trusted counsellor of the Whig governments, Senior advocated measures opposite to the common notions of laissez-faire. His basic ideas are contrasted to those of Malthus concerning economics and, in particular, the population doctrine that Senior never believed in and in its crudest form refuted. Senior regarded Malthus’ doctrine as devastating to governmental policies. Senior wanted an efficient and strong government. Moreover, Senior evolved ideas, in fact a strategy, for raising Ireland out of her common destitution instead of institutionalizing poor laws. This strategy embraced Catholic emancipation, education, public investments in infrastructure and emigration. His ideas, and proposals akin to Senior’s, are related to the political discourse of the day, which took a more common view of laissez-faire during the period considered. Nevertheless, there is consistency in his ideas on government, public investments and laissez-faire. Senior cannot be described as anything other than an early liberal and a classical economist and, hence, an advocator of economic laissez-faire. This paper underlines the need for a clear distinction between economic laissez-faire as a concept and the concept of political laissez-faire, whereas the former concerns thoughts on economics and the latter is related to the notion of the impassivity of the period of today’s discourse.
