Öst är öst och väst är väst, och aldrig mötas de två?: Västerländsk esoterism, österländskt material – några metodologiska reflektioner2017In: DIN: tidsskrift for religion og kultur, ISSN 1501-9934, E-ISSN 2387-6735, no 2, p. 10-42Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Sweden is today a country with ethnic, cultural and religious diversity. My aim in this study is to study what view of Islam and Muslims that students at a Catholic school in Stockholm have. The reason why Catholic schools are interesting to study is that previous research has showed that Muslim students around Europe often attend catholic schools as they are regarded as more tolerant towards religion. This study is based on a questionnaire and personal interviews with upper secondary students at the Catholic school in Stockholm. The result is compared with previous research on students of the same age group (12-15 years). The results of the survey show that the majority of students have a positive attitude towards Islam and Muslims, but that there is a small group at the Catholic School who have negative attitude towards Islam and Muslims. The negative attitude increases when it comes to the Muslim’s rights, for example the right to build mosques in Sweden. The results also show that students with parents with higher education are more tolerant than students with parents with no academic education. I have used Mattias Gardell’s definition of Islamophobia to analyze the result from the survey and interview among the students at the Catholic school. When using this definition, we can see that the students have some islamophobic thoughts about Muslims and Islam. The results indicate that the school needs to actively work with this question in a more constructive way. One of my suggestions are that they need to talk more about Islam and Muslims during the lessons so the students gain knowledge about the religion but also create situations where non-Muslims and Muslims meet. In this way, students can integrate with each other. This study only shows the attitudes among the students at this Catholic School.

“Fight is an inside path”: A minor field study of how members of Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order perceive religious freedom in Mexico2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The interests for academic studies of contemporary Sufism and Sufism in non-Islamic countries have become more popular, but little has been done in Latin America. The studies of Islam in this continent are limited and studies on Sufism in Mexico seem to be an unexplored area. As a student of journalism target religion I see this as an important topic that can generate new information for the study of Sufism. This thesis is therefore aimed to describe the group of Sufis I have chosen to study, Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order in Mexico, linked to Human Rights in form of how members of the Sufi order perceive Religious Freedom in Mexico.

A minor field study was carried out in Colonia Roma, Mexico City during October and November 2014. The place was chosen because this is the place where Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order exists in Mexico. The investigation is qualitative and based on an ethnographic study of eight weeks and semi structured interviews with three dervishes of the Sufi order, where two of them are men and one is a woman. Based on my purpose I have formulated the following questions:

    • How do members of Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order in Mexico define Sufism? And how do they describe and practice their religious belief?
    • How do members of Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order in Mexico express the situation to belong to a religious minority in the country? And how do the members perceive religious freedom in Mexico?

The question of my research is therefore: Do members of Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order in Mexico express that they feel free to practice their religion? And if so, how?

The results of the study shows that all the informants express that they feel free to practice their religion as a Sufi. One of the respondents that also belongs to the Conchero tradition, which is a group of the indigenous people of Mexico, says that he has experienced discrimination from both the government and other citizens due to that he belong to the Conchero tradition. Information from the respondents’ shows that Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order in Mexico is such a small community that people does not consider them. This might be one of the reasons why members of Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order in Mexico have the freedom to practice their religion.

    Abstract [en]

This article tells the story of St. Catherine ́s Swedish Lutheran Church in St Petersburg with a particular focus on how this building was linked to a Swedish legacy and also to hopes for actions from The Church of Sweden in the time after the cold war. In the fall of 1991, a handful of people gathered in an apartment in St. Petersburg to sign an application to the city authorities to be registered as the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in St. Petersburg. The application was approved and the formation had consequences for The Church of Sweden and for Swedish Foreign Policy, as the congregation repeatedly tried to be recognized as a Swedish outpost in St. Petersburg.

The congregation ́s claim that they were the legitimate heirs of the Swedish Lutheran congregation, which had existed in the city or its surroundings since 1632, was clearly demonstrated, thus revealing memories, which were reactivated and filled with new content. It can clearly be stated that it would not have been possible to revive and revitalize the memory of the Swedish Lutheran presence in St. Petersburg without the material (and spatial) traces in the form of the church building.

St. Catherine’s congregation is not very big today (2018). Exact numbers are hard to establish – but it is not more than 50 members. These are mostly Russians with an interest in Scandinavian history and culture, some of whom have Swedish or Finnish roots. On the other hand, arrangements like concerts, St Lucia and Christmas celebrations gather big audiences. The congregation still has an uncertain existence and the building – despite its poor condition – is the congregation´s primary asset. The (church) building can be described as an ecumenical activity house since the congregation allows other groups use of the building.

There have been plans to transform the church building into a Swedish cultural center, plans not yet materialized. The building has attracted a variety of hopes of different groups, from the preservation or re-creation of a lost Swedish identity and belonging, to being a necessary junction in the maintenance of Swedish-Russian relations. The former ambition rests on, and belongs to, a Lutheran religious identity, while the second one is an expression of Swedish (secular) diplomacy and politics.

In practice one can conclude that the Swedish Lutheran congregation in S:t Petersburg has no official links with The Church of Sweden. That formal bond broke when the fortress Nyenskans fell in 1703. After that, the congregation has been part of the Lutheran church in Russia. And as long as Finland was a Grand Duchy of Russian, the Swedish congregation could work closely with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Finland. The congregation has always been turned towards Finland, Sweden and Russia. It constitutes – since the 18th century – a contact area between different countries – a zone where people, languages, traditions (religious and cultural) and stories have met, merged, transformed and sometimes even collided.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis sets out to examine how teachers in RE reflect and respond to religious students' questions and statements about religion and violent religious extremism by interviewing three teachers workning in so called particularily deprived areas in the outskirts of Malmö, Göteborg and Stockholm. In these areas there have been several cases of citizens leaving the country to travel to areas of conflict and war, most recently to the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. With this “backdrop”, it is this study's aim to examine and explore what didactic strategies the teachers employ when engaging with religious, primarily muslim students within a secular, non confessional and compulsory RE. The study shows that the teachers' own religiosity and attitude towards the relationship between religion and secular society is crucial to their didactical approaches. This raises questions about what role the teacher plays in didactics, where a sole focus on the interplay between student and content/lesson material seems insufficient.

    Abstract [en]

Based on fieldwork in the United States, the article analyses the social construction of gender in contemporary OTO. The article addresses an important and often neglected area of study in research on Western esotericism, and discusses how the notion of binary gender is both created and challenged in interactions between OTO members. Thelemic divinity as presented in Liber AL is envisioned as consisting of a divine father, Hadit, mother Nuit, and Ra-Hoor-Khuit, their divine offspring. Despite the gender polarity constructed thus, contemporary OTO members stretch the boundaries of binary gender through a plethora of deities, personal gender performances and acceptance of different sexual orientations and lifestyles. The creativity and innovation of contemporary OTO members' gender constructions demonstrates the necessity of greater methodological diversity in research on Western esotericism, in order to allow an understanding of esoteric traditions as lived religions.

The Scythe and the Pentagram: Santa Muerte from Folk Catholicism to Occultism2017In: Religions, ISSN 2077-1444, E-ISSN 2077-1444, Vol. 8, no 1, article id 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Santa Muerte is establishing a presence among practitioners of contemporary occultism in Europe and North America. The occult milieu is highly different from the Mexican cult of Santa Muerte, having a strong heritage of secrecy and tradition as social capital and being mostly middle-class in orientation. Nonetheless, this Catholic folk saint with a mostly pragmatic, popular, and grassroots cult is becoming increasingly popular among occultists. Based on a survey of three recent books on Santa Muerte geared towards an Anglophone, occult audience, it is therefore the aim of this article to understand how and why the Skeleton Saint is attracting adherents in the occult milieu, by analyzing the underlying causes of this growing trend, as well as the conditions shaping it. It is the overall argument of this article that the beginning reception of Santa Muerte in occultism is a result of perceived needs and demands specific to the occult milieu rather than characteristics inherent in the symbol itself, and that an analysis of the ways in which she is spreading outside of her original sociocultural context must be guided by an understanding of the novel one she is integrated in.

Sounds of Mouridism: A study on the use of music and sound in the Mouridiyya2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The use of music in religious traditions is a complicated subject. Some say it doesn’t have any place in religion while others see it as an essential part of their spiritual life. How one defines music, and indeed religion, can differ greatly but both of these have played an enormous role in our world both historically and today. The relationship between these two subjects is the focus of this study. I aim to analyze how music and sound is used within the Mouridiyya, a Sufi order based mainly in Western Africa, as a religious practice and in what way different forms of music is a way for Mourids in Sweden to connect with their native culture and religion in a society that is in many ways very different. The study is based on interviews and field observations and will explore themes like music as transcendence, the contents of the music, attitudes toward “secular” or more popular, contemporary forms of music as well as gender roles and segregation. I have visited one Mourid group in Stockholm and the study will be based entirely on them. To say something more general about Mouridism or Sufism are generalizations I am not prepared to make, but some of the findings do open up for these kinds of discussions and hopefully this will be but one small step into a fairly uncharted academic field of “religious music”.

The Architecture of Pilgrimage: A study on the Ziyara Bogal and charismatic authority in the Tijaniyya2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Pilgrimage plays an important role in many religious traditions. Indeed, one of the five pillars of Islam is the Hajj – the pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim is expected to perform at least once in their life. But this isn’t the only ritual of its kind present in Islam. Indeed, a common practice in Sufism is the Ziyara – a pilgrimage or visit to a saint or the tomb of a saint. This study aims to give a comprehensive overview of one of these pilgrimages – the Ziyara Bogal of the Tijaniyya Sufi order. Through observational methods and interviews, the present thesis will look at strategies of ritualization and charismatic authority, as well as the political implications of the pilgrimage in West African society. Extensive fieldwork was conducted in Senegal, The Gambia and in the diasporic community in Sweden both during the pilgrimage itself and several months before and after, and theories relating to the main themes (ritualization, charismatic authority) is used to analyze the material. As such, the study will map out multiple significant aspects of the ziyara and give an insight into how Islam is lived and practiced in the region.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose with my essay is to investigate Church of Sweden’s prayer web page during September 2011 and September 2014. The purpose is to find out if there are any differences or similarities during the year 2011 and the year 2014, in the month of September, by examining literature and prayer that people have sent to prayer site.

The Church of Sweden belongs to Lutheran belief.2 On the church of Sweden prayer site there is a digital web page where visitors can send a prayer or light a candle. It is possible to do it individually or in a group. At the prayer site you can read people`s prayers.

The Essay investigates what people pray for and what types of prayers that are published on the digital prayer site. My hypothesis is that there should be small differences between year 2011 and year 2014 since there are only three years between 2011 and 2014.

    My questions are:

    • When comparing September 2011 and September 2014, are there any differences concerning the way the web page visitors choose to address God?
    • Are there any changes concerning the content of the prayers when comparing September 2011 and September 2014?

The conclusion is that the difference between year 2011 and year 2014 is that year 2014 was more politically oriented than the year 2011 because in the year 2014 there was a general election. Some prayers wished for a good government. Year 2011 there were more prayers submitted than the year 2014.

In the church of Sweden digital prayer site you can find the differences which occur and also which the similarities are. The method which is used is quantitative method since the essay method contains statistics. I also apply comparative method because I am going to compare the year 2011 with the year 2014. When I was preparing for the essay I used qualitative method as preparation.

No other person has specifically written an essay about the prayers on the Church of Sweden’s prayer site in September year 2011 and 2014.

    Abstract [en]

In this survey the author discusses teachers interpretation of documents formulated bythe government. The text in focus is the beginning of the curriculum where the basicvalues for the Swedish school system are to be found. Since there are great difficultiesknowing what the politicians mean, this survey tries to discuss different words likesecularism, confessional, non-confessional, and what they mean. This might seemobvious at first but it is relevant when you discuss religion and it´s roll in liberaldemocracies. This survey also tries to show how different interpretation of the textwould lead to different practice because of the lack of an actual consensus. The idea, that rational collegial reflections on how to implement the values, would lead to acommon and equivalent for all Swedish schools is criticized. Especially when thisgoal, the homogenizing one, can’t be at the expense of pupils autonomy. That is, thatpupils in liberal democracies should as individuals be able to make up their values bythemselves. This is a problem because every interpretation of the values is an actwhere you estimate what you believe as right and true. In multicultural countries asSweden this means that there are all kinds of interpretations. And none of which couldbe called more true or false when it comes to values, since values can’t be measured. The reason for this is, as the survey shows, that not even values that claim to besecular are neutral. The survey shows that it is not possible to be non- confessional asthe curriculum tells teachers to be. Even secularism is a confession beside others.

    Abstract [sv]

Frälsningssynen inom kristendomens tre inriktningar: En kvalitativ studie2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

According to the directives of Lgr11, learning about Christianity should be an important part of religious education in secondary school (7th-9th grade) in Sweden. A school teacher must therefore have good knowledge of the field and of different aspects of the beliefs of the various Christian traditions.

This essay is about how salvation is conceived of by two members of the laity in each of three different Christian traditions: the Syriac Orthodox Church, the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of Sweden (which is Lutheran). As a theoretical perspective for my analysis, I have chosen the official views of salvation of these three churches. That is to say, views of the members of the laity have been compared with the official views of the respective churches. It is thus a very limited qualitative study aiming at finding out how the views of the laity conform to the official creed concerning salvation and whether there are any differences here between the churches. The result of this essay is that there were few differences and a lot of similarities between the laity belief in the relation to the official doctrines of salvation. Only among the protestant laity differences were prominent.

Ateism och sekulära livsåskådningar i religionskunskapsundervisningen: En kvalitativ studie om hur religionskunskapslärare i gymnasiet behandlar ateism och sekulära livsåskådningar i sin undervisning2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Alternative Islamic discourses and religious authority2013Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Like anywhere else, the present-day Islamic world too is grappling with modernity and postmodernity, secularisation and globalisation. Muslims are raising questions about religious representations and authority. This has given rise to the emergence of alternative Islamic discourses which challenge binary oppositions and dichotomies of orthodoxy and heterodoxy, continuity and change, state and civil society. It also leads to a dispersal of authority, a collapse of existing hierarchical structures and gender roles. This book further argues that the centre of gravity of many of these alternative Islamic discourses is shifting from the Arabic-speaking 'heartland' towards the geographical peripheries of the Muslim world and expatriate Muslims in North America and Europe. At the same time, in view of recent seismic shifts in the political constellation of the Middle East, the trends discussed in this book hold important clues for the possible direction of future developments in that volatile part of the Muslim world. © Carool Kersten and Susanne Olsson 2013. Bilden av Islamiska staten: en analys av hur jihadiströrelsen använder sig av rörligt bildmaterial2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study deals with religious independent schools and its impact on society. The purpose of this essay has been to examine what various teachers from both religious independent schools and public schools have for perception of religious independent schools. The questions highlighted in the study is the teachers´ general view to religious independent schools, teachers´ perception of the Education Act " a denominational education, but a non- denominational teaching", and what teachers believe to be segregated or inclusive.

The study has consisted of five qualitative interviews with different teachers, where three of them work at religious independent schools, while the other two teachers work in public schools.

The study shows that there are prominent differences of approach to religious independent schools. Teachers who work at religious independent schools avert criticism of religious independent schools and argue that teaching in religious independent schools do not differ appreciably from the public schools. Instead can religious independent schools serve as a good alternative to the public school. While teachers from public schools sharply criticizes the religious independent schools and argue that these are not for everyone, but only for a specific group which can result segregation of society.

”En livsfråga? Det var en svår fråga”: En studie om ungdomars tankar om livsfrågor i religionskunskapsundervisningen2016Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis was to study young people's thoughts on religious education in high school with a focus on life questions (livsfrågor).

In order to achieve the purpose of the thesis the issue was divided into two primary issues: how do young people describe religious education in high school? And how do they reflect on the concept of life questions? And two secondary issues: do young people consider that life questions were a part of religious teaching? And do the young people consider that their life questions were a part of religious teaching?

In order to answer the issues five young people were interviewed on questions related to teaching of religion and life questions. The five youths had studied at least one religious course at secondary level.

The results showed that the five youths regarded religious education as studies about "the others" because the major focus was on facts but they nevertheless perceived religious education as interesting. All the young people reflected differently about the concept of life questions. Whether or not life questions were brought up in the classrooms varied between the participants. Only one of the participants expressed with certainty that life questions that she also viewed as her own were brought up in the classroom.

En undersökning om utrymmet om mandeism i den svenska skolan: En kvalitativ undersökning om mandiska elevers upplevelser om religionskunskapsundervisning i skolan2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This case study examines how a group of upper secondary school students in a multiethnical suburb of Stockholm reason about the theory of evolution. The theoretical background of the thesis is postcolonial and the questions raised were how spread the creationist thoughts are in the group; in what way the backgrounds of the students are relevant to their thoughts; how the students construct the notion of the theory of evolution; how they position themselves and others in relation to the discourse of the theory of evolution; if there are any differences between students at the collage program of natural science and the collage program of social science, and in that case, what differences; and who or what inspires the young in their thoughts about the theory of evolution. To answer these questions both a survey poll and interviews were used. The result of the case study showed that a majority of the students at the investigated school has creationist ideas and that the students profiled on social science have creationist ideas in a wider extent. Another result is that the religious background seems to be relevant to develop creationist thoughts, while the variables gender, home district and educational level did not differ the creationist group from the whole group. The students accept some parts of the theory of evolution, for example the development of spices and their adaptation to the environment, but they position themselves mainly outside the discourse of the theory of evolution. The students say that there is no contradiction between religion and science but their talk reveal a discourse where the two stand as opponents. They see themselves as inferior to their teachers, scientists and atheists in general. The study shows that the interviewed were not able to tell were they got inspired to their thoughts. In short, the students starting-point is above all their religious identity and their reasoning about the evolution emanate from it.

Theoretical and methodological perspectives to studying religious and cultural diversity in Finnish, Swedish and Estonian comprehensive schools2018In: New international studies on religions and dialouge in education / [ed] Martin Ubani, Münster: Waxmann Verlag, 2018, p. 31-45Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents some of the theoretical and methodological considerations in studying religious and cultural diversity in Finnish, Swedish and Estonian comprehensive schools. The perspective arises from our experiences of carrying out an international comparative research project looking at pupils´perspectives to diversity in the educational settings and their wider everyday environments.  The data were gathered in diverse comprehensive school contexts across Sweden, Estonia and Finland. The article illustrates several important issues that are often lacking in the studies in this area and need to be accounted for when examining cultural and religious diversity in the schools and the everyday lives of children and youth.
