    Abstract [sv]

How soldiers' women built early modern states: Stockholm 1544-16352021In: Bringing the People Back In: State Building from Below in the Nordic Countries ca. 1500-1800 / [ed] Knut Dørum; Mats Hallenberg; Kimmo Katajala, Abingdon: Routledge, 2021, p. 162-179Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

To study soldiers' women forming military households as a form of state building is an attempt to expand ‘the below’-perspective beyond its inherited reliance upon studies of ‘the local.’ Early modern state building meant the creation of several new such socio-economic niches, of which soldier's woman was one. After some theoretical and methodological discussion, it first establishes when and how soldier's woman became a socio-economic niche in early modern Sweden, before exploring the characteristics of that niche and the women who lived in it. Compared to other urban settings, soldiers' women should thus be more common in Stockholm – which is why there is a sufficient volume of records available to be analysed to begin with. Viewing early modern military household formation as everyday politics of state building thus shows how its results could be unintended not just from below, but also from the very top.

Migration i 1600-talets Sverige: Älvsborgs lösen 1613–16182018Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a study of migration in the early seventeenth-century Swedish feudal society, and of its migration regime; that is the political, legal and economic structures that shaped the migration patterns. The most important sources are taxation records from Älvsborgs lösen, containing demographic migration data for large parts of the Swedish realm 1613–1618. The migration regime is also studied through sources such as legislation and legal records.

Migration rates and migration distances are analysed for households and for servants. Although most migration was short-distance, different social groups had different migration patterns. Further, urban migration patterns, inter-regional and international migration are analysed. Concerning migration rates, the study shows that migration was as common in seventeenth-century Sweden as in other parts of Europe (including England), and also as common as in the nineteenth century.

In the thesis, legislation and legal practices concerning the mobility of tenants and servants, as well as concerning urban migration, international migration and forced migration (banishments and deportations) are studied. The study of the migration regime found that since not only rural but ideally also urban production was geographically fixed, regulating migration and population mobility was an important issue within the Swedish feudal society.

The results confirm the fundamental importance of migration for the Swedish seventeenth-century feudal society, in which labour was free while the means of production were immobile. Through comparisons with historical research on other regions, this result is evidently not only valid for seventeenth-century Sweden, but may be generalized also for other feudal societies.

Between Memory and History: Retracing Historical Knowledge Through a Phenomenology of Afterlife2024In: Jan Patočka and the Phenomenology of Life After Death / [ed] Gustav Strandberg; Hugo Strandberg, Cham: Springer, 2024, p. 139-152Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

How can Jan Patočka’s phenomenology of afterlife enable us to understand the historiographical process in general and the role of testimony in the historiographical process, in particular? Patočka presents a phenomenological analysis of co-existence and afterlife where others continue to be with us, as a part of our lifeworld and our constitution of ourselves, even after they are gone. We see ourselves through others and we continue to experience our lifeworld with them, a relation that is transformed but not disrupted after their death. In historiographical discussions, historical knowledge is often defined in opposition to memories, on account of its distance to our immediate, personal relation to our past. Such discussions were famously undertaken by thinkers such as Paul Ricoeur and Pierre Nora. The aim of this paper is to place the phenomenological analysis of death and of loss within discussions surrounding the relation between memory and historical knowledge. In particular, it examines how we constitute and re-constitute collective memory and historical knowledge through testimonies and archives. It argues that we can understand testimonies and archives as different modes of being with the dead, modes that continue to constitute both our individual field of experience, and our collective historical situation.

Swedish sailor songs, popular culture and maritime national identities, 1918–19602023In: International Journal of Maritime History, ISSN 0843-8714, E-ISSN 2052-7756, Vol. 35, no 4, p. 589-621Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In twentieth-century Sweden, conventional inland nationalism was challenged by strong currents of maritime national identities. The reason was a national frenzy regarding maritime popular music – primarily, songs about Swedish sailors and their adventures in exotic faraway lands. Throughout the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, and continuing into the 1950s, numerous Swedish composers, singers and musicians produced hundreds of sailor songs. Their commercial success was staggering, to the delight of Sweden's developing music industry, but the identitarian consequences were even more astonishing. Maritime national identities flourished as Swedishness itself changed drastically via this huge exposure to sailor songs.

Maritime military archery: Bowmen on European warships, 1000–16002021In: Facing the Sea: Essays in Swedish Maritime Studies / [ed] Simon Ekström; Leos Müller, Lund: Nordic Academic Press, 2021, 1, p. 41-74Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There is a considerable research gap in both maritime and military history concerning the naval use of bowmen. For over three millennia—spanning from the ancient Egyptians until around the year AD 1600—archery was a key component in maritime combat. This essay highlights the importance, flexibility, and impact of naval archery with special attention given to European waters in the late Middle Ages and the early modern period.
