Ledarskap och stresshantering: En kvalitativ intervjustudie om relationen mellan ledarskap och socialsekreterares förutsättningar att hantera stress på arbetsplatsen, utifrån en fallbeskrivning om socialtjänsten.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Den tredelade institutionen: En kvalitativ studie om kriminalvårdens behandlingsprogram2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to look into how Swedish prison and probation services’ program performers experience their work towards the vision “better out”, as well as how they work with behavioral change in prison environment. Through the conceptions of criminal habitus, stigma, destigmatization and total institutions we have analyzed and discussed the empirical gathered material from interviewed program performers.

The result of this study has brought up three themes; motivation, prison environment and implements to be leaving “better out”. An individual's motivation is essential to undergo a change but this study also emphasizes the prison environments’ difficulties to pursue changes. According to the program performers this can counteract by the prison being a more supportive environment, which they mean is something to be improved further on. The prison and probation services’ work by RBM (risk, needs and sensitiveness) to identify risk factors in individuals and by KBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) to help individuals with higher risk of relapse to work with their problems. Social relations and authorities are also important parts of this process for a sustainable outcome. The combined result indicates that program performers experience that they contribute to the vision for their clients, to leave “better out”.

Ungdomars informationssökning på Internet: Vad ungdomar tycker om sina egna kompetenser och erfarenheter2009Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study aims to investigate student’s attitudes and experiences of information retrieval on the Internet, as tools for learning. I have been interested of their own views about their own knowledge and experience in the subject, information seeking on the Internet. The focus is on what they perceive as problematic, what skills they consider they have and what needs they have in terms of teaching. Data were collected via questionnaires. About 200 students at the second year in high school have been asked about the problems and difficulties they have within seeking on the Internet. The study is especially framed within a sociocultural perspective of learning. The study aims to answer following questions:

Do the students think that they, in a concentrated way, can orient themselves and seek information on the Internet? Do the students think that they had received education in information seeking on the Internet? Do the students think that they need more skills in information seeking on the Internet?

The result shows that this millennial generation see themselves as competent users of the Internet, the World Wide Web (www). Young people are attracted by working with the computer as tool for learning, while teachers may feel that the boundary between school and leisure time is small. The students have a sense of success in every moment of internet seeking. Pupils and teachers have different skills on the Internet. This applies to teachers gain knowledge of it and how to teach the skills students need. Since the computer is a common tool in our workplaces in the community, is it important for the school to prepare the students for the future. It is important for all educators in the school, individually and jointly to reflect on the information that will contribute to the student's own knowledge creation and in what way.

”I andras styrka återfann jag min.”: En narrativ studie om självhjälp på Internet2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of this essay has been to contribute to a deeper understanding of self-help on the Internet by illuminating the individual's awareness and interaction with others. The study's subject of research has been seven individual life stories found on a newsgroup on the Internet and was implemented with a narrative research method and a hermeneutic approach. The study is qualitative in its nature and the individual's behavior and self-perceived reality has been the main focus. The theory that has been applied in the study is the pragmatic micro perspective symbolic interactionism with the following theoretical starting points: symbols, displacement, deprived of identity and mutual aid. The thematic structure of the analysis has been based on the study’s three research questions of which the first theme highlighted displacement and deprived of identity as the two main themes in the life stories. The second theme dealt with the importance of group membership, which clearly showed that the newsgroup means a great deal for strengthening their personal identity. The third theme revealed that the changes in lifestyle and habits have been both psychological and physical. Whether or not the spatial separation many informants made from their parents can measure up to an emotional separation that they have not yet reached were discussed and lastly an implication that a combination of professional help such as therapy and newsgroup as a supplement may be a good method to reach the emotional separation.

Ropen skalla - tillit åt alla: En studie om klasskillnader gällande tillit till offentlig sektor2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This report is about the principle and his / her role at the school it’s also about how the principle understands the role, its expectations and the demands connected. The facts are based on deep detailed interviews with three different principles. The theoretical approach is coming from “hermeneutiken” and “Gadamers” ideas regarding how an individual is creating the world and the surroundings to act within. The ambition was to evaluate the three different principles opinions and feelings in the light of the above approach plus describe possible areas of difficulties because of too different demands and expectations. The interviews indicate both similarities and totally different opinions. It will be very interesting to connect basic business management and impacts from both the formal and also the informal organisation to the interview results and findings.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to illustrate coping strategies that volunteers at a certain young women's empowerment center in the Stockholm area use to avoid emotional contagion. Furthermore, the study emphasizes factors that drive the volunteers to continue their work at the young women’s empowerment center. The study intends to answer the following two questions: i) What strategies do the volunteers use to avoid emotional contagion due to their involvement at the young women's empowerment center? ii) What factors do the volunteers find motivating to continue their involvement at young women's empowerment center? The method used for this study is based on hermeneutics and the idea of the qualitative research approach as a circular movement between the different parts and the emerging picture. Richard S. Lazarus and Susan Folkman’s (1984) coping theory, Abraham Maslow’s (1943) hierarchy of needs and Frederick Herzberg’s (1993) two factor theory has formed the theoretical framework for the study. The results indicate that the volunteers mainly use three strategies to avoid emotional contagion; distance, support from colleagues and organizational guidelines. Moreover, the results show how the volunteers generally find motivation to continue their involvement due to the sense of community they experienced within the group, feedback from fellow associates but also from the who seek support and thereto the volunteers ability to contribute to the society.

    Abstract [en]

A study by Gulistan Kavak has been done about the therapy school, Liljanschool. The school handles children between the ages seven and twelve who suffer from psychosocial problems. These psychosocial problems may be the children’s’ experiences of psychological trauma, attachment-difficulties and anxiety. Therapists, teachers, educators and medical professionals work at Liljanschool.

The purpose of this thesis is to see how parents see their children’s’ development at the school from there very first day until there last. Three questions have been formulated: How do parents of the children understand the development of the therapy that Liljanschool contributes with? How do the parents think that the school situation has been for their children? Do the school staff´s views and the parent´s views differ regarding cooperation between staff, parents and children?

I have done a qualitative study.  In-depth interviews were conducted with the staff of the school and the children’s parents. The results show that the majority of respondents were positive about the school. The analysis shows that through the extension-theory, the children and parents have developed together. The children’s’ behaviour has changed in a positive way.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to describe and analyze how young adults remember in retrospect, what it was like to come as unaccompanied minors and integrate in Sweden. In this study, we use the qualitative research method with the help of five semi structured interviews that were conducted with young adults that hold the experience of coming to Sweden as unaccompanied children. The theoretical framework of this study lies in Giddens (2014) ideal models for ethnic integration, Lidskog’s reasoning about social cohesion and cultural pressures and Al Badawi’s (2014) theory of migration and adaption. Earlier research in this study has been of use in combination with the essays theoretical framework in the analysis. The main result in the essay has indicated (amongst other things) that young adults experience having much responsibility concerning their integration in Sweden. Results also showed that it was challenging for the young adults to encounter the new culture and the new social system. This challenge was successfully handled by some young adults single-handedly while the others got help from adults and new friends. Furthermore, it was found that young adults experienced that language and social intercourse were important components which was part of the integration process.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how collaboration works and is experienced by health and social care workers in a psychiatric care unit. We have conducted qualitative interviews with eight professionals at a psychiatric care unit for individuals with mental illness, that work on the basis of Södertäljemodellen. The empirical data is analyzed using collaboration as a theoretical concept along with organization theory. The results show that collaboration works through formal and informal meetings and also when the professionals need to consider assessements made by other professionals in their decision making. Furthermore, the results show that the professionals experience that they have gained a better understanding of each other’s work, better cooperation and that assistance faster reaches the patients/clients. However, the study also sheds light on some of the problems experienced by the professionals, for example, that co-location can contribute to an indistinct division of labor and difficulties with the structure of the workday.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is a part of a project called “Young peoples representation of love and relationships” and was initialized in Barcelona in January 2006. The University of Barcelona cooperates with the University college of Södertörns Högskola to compare perception of love among youths in both countries. The project focuses on teenagers between 13-19 years of age. The project uses four types of questionnaires with questions about love, feelings, empathy and relationships witch were compiled by research workers at the University of Barcelona.

“A Love-ly game” is a qualitative study that is based on a questionnaire-investigation made in a Gymnasium-school in a suburb south of Stockholm. The questionnaires can be answered both in writing and by drawing but deal with the same subject. The purpose of this essay is to study a group of young people in the ages of 16-18 years old and capture their view of love and relationships. The essay will present the qualities the young people consider as the most important in a relationship and also the variety of ways these are expressed. Out of this material the author has made an interpreting analysis out of which conclusions are presented.

According to respondents the most vital qualities in a relationship are honesty, trust, affection and kindness. These characteristics are expressed in different ways in relationships, depending on the persons’ idea of what love and its’ meaning is.

"Att hjälpa är att lära": En kvalitativ studie om betydelsen av socialt stöd för ensamkommande flyktingungdomar2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Every year a great amount of unaccompanied children flee their homelands without their parents or guardians. This means a journey filled with danger and difficulties. The difficulties don’t only exist during the road ahead but also when the children arrive to the new country. Even if Sweden’s work in receiving refugees is one of the best in the world, it still exist problems. The support work with unaccompanied children is done on different levels in society. The work performed nearest to the individuals takes place at the asylum- permanent residence accommodation where the youth are placed after the decision if they can stay in the country or not. We will in this essay illustrate how the support work with unaccompanied children in the age 13-18 looks like and what effect social support has on the adolescent’s identity development. By visiting two agencies that have asylum- permanent residence accommodation we carried out four interviews with professionals who work on a daily base with the young people. Based on the informant’s narratives and interpretations of the young people’s experiences, we seek to gain knowledge of their situation, both physically and psychologically. We investigated the circumstances behind the feeling of security, how reliance is formed and how social support can help the children’s sense of coherence. We use both crises theory, identity theory and the theory of SOC (sense of coherence) to analyze the informants´ stories. The results of this study show that social support is highly important for a child’s identity development. It is the professional who work on a daily base closely to the children who often symbolize the essence of social support. It’s through their work a safe environment is established and upheld. Identity is shaped through social relationships within groups where solidarity and a mutual confidence exist. We have also acknowledged some deficiencies in the structure of the support work, for example regarding which premises are the young individuals expected to adapt to the Swedish society. The adaption and adjustment has become an obligation for the young individuals rather than for the society.

    Abstract [en]

At the end of the year 2015, Sweden peaked in regards to asylum-seeking refugees. Concequently, parts of the social service would face numerous challenges in regards to the placement of unaccompanied minors in out-of home care and in rising costs for asylum accommodation for unaccompanied minors. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the consequences of what happens when the asylum housing for unaccompanied minors changes. This thesis takes its starting point in how treatment assistants at a municipal support housing view integration in regards to their work with unaccompanied minors. The empirical basis for this study consists of six semi-structured interviews with treatment assistants at a municipal support housing in Stockholm. The analysis takes its conceptual basis in Michael Lipsky's (1980/2010) theory of street-level bureaucrats and Ludvig Beckman's (2011) integration- theory. The results showed that treatment assistants tend to focus on general knowledge about societal institutions, language and relationships as important factors that they attempted to shape their work around. At the same time, the treatment assistants experience a conflict between what they can do and what they perceived that the unaccompanied minor needs. The study shows i.a. the challenges in including housing staff and municipalities on the forming and decision-making off public policies in extraordinary situations.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how therapists and volunteers find that men who exposed women to violence in close relationships describe and explain their experiences as violence practitioners and how these men describes violence in relation to their image of masculinity. Furthermore, the purpose is to investigate how respondents are affected by the stories of men. The study is based on five qualitative interviews, where an interview guide is used to structure the data collection. The results are analyzed based on three different themes; men's ways of describing and telling about violence, men's image of masculinity and how respondents were influenced by men's stories. Theories that have been used in this study is theories of mirror self, the normalization process of violence for men and cognitive dissonance. The result of this study suggests that men use narrative strategies to mitigate and explain their violence in close relationships. Respondents experience feelings like powerlessness and frustration in conversations with men who do not want to take responsibility for their actions.

    Abstract [en]

This scientific essay starts with a literary composition from the author’s personal experience as a community mental health worker. The purpose of the essay is to articulate the practice of the community mental health worker starting with the literary composition and by utilizing Aristotle The Nicomachean Ethics and Donald A. Schön Educating the Reflective Practitioner reflect over what type of knowledge the mental health worker uses and how it is possible to attain that knowledge. The methods consist of writing in addition to a phenomenological procedure regarding the literary composition and hermeneutic exploring.

A personal and historical background is presented, along with a selection of research regarding community mental health work. This is followed by the authors discussion, starting with the theory of Aristotle, regarding the purpose of community mental health work and the type of knowledge that is located in the literary composition. The author continues to discuss how the community mental health worker learns this knowledge with starting from the theory of Schön. After that instructions are discussed in another context, from the conceptual artist Sol LeWitt. The essay ends with a conclusion by the author that the practical knowledge is central within the community mental health work even if instructions can make the author attentive on the middle way.

The subject of this essay is high achieving girls with mental disorders. The purpose with the investigation was to find out how these girls felt during their years in school and also to get concrete examples of how a school handles these problems.

This study was based on qualitative interviews. Five interwieves and literature about suicide, depression and eating disorders have been the foundation of this study.

The most important conclusion of this work is that it seems like a new agenda will be needed if we want to improve the circumstances for high achieving girls with mental disorders. Amongst the many things that can be done, all teachers need to get more aware of how their pupils feel and more knowledge in this area.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine whether the degree of discipline in social services may be the reason why more children are evicted in one municipality in Stockholm, compared to another. Since our purpose was to study the degree of discipline in social services work with eviction cases where children are concerned, discipline is therefore a central part of the study. The interest in the subject arose from our prior understanding that social services approach to discipline may affect the extent of evictions. In order to answer the study’s question at issue, a qualitative interview was conducted to create an understanding of the discipline and a vignette study was conducted to compare the social workers assessments in two municipalities in Stockholm, Högstad and Lågby. The study's interviews and vignette study was complemented with previous research related to the topic. The theoretical perspective was the basis for the analysis of the empirical study and consisted interconnection of theory by Michel Foucaults as well as Greta Marie Skaus and Erich Fromms perspective which helped us create a better understanding of the discipline in social services. In conclusion, we discussed thoughts and ideas that arose during the study and the results show, among other things, obvious elements of discipline in social services. Additional knowledge from the study contributed to increased understanding was in which way the social services approach to discipline affects their assessments in eviction cases where children are concerned.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to getting an insight of the work enviorment for the social workers at the social service department for child and youth welfare in Stockholm. We also wanted to get an insight into what kind of work enviorment factors they consider as important in their daily work. Previous research shows that whether or not the employee decides to stay in their place of work largely depends whether or not they experience appreciation, care-taking and involvement from the human resources managment. This study is made with a qualitative approach and seven semi-structured interviews with social workers working with child and youth welfare have been conducted. The results show that social workers differed in how they perceived the physical and psychological work environment and that the psychological aspect was more important for those social workers who wished to leave the workplace. Furthermore, the results showed that the work environment was a subject widely discussed among the social workers, while the new regulations from the Swedish work environment agency remained unknown to them. We hope that the new regulations will provide a good foundation and better conditions for the social workers and their work environment. In conclusion, we think that the general recommendations in these regulations ought to be directed not only to the employers but to the employees as well, thus achieving a greater involvement from the employees in questions concerning their work environment.

    Abstract [en]

This study analyzes the administrative court and if they ensure the “child's perspective” when judging youths to compulsory care. This has been studied by reviewing CRC:s guidelines and if the court follows these guidelines and applicable laws in their decisions. The material that have been analyzed consists of six court decisions concerning youth that are convicted pursuant to 3 § LVU. The study also intends to see what effects compulsory care has on youth. The court decisions are analyzed through a critical discourse analysis based on theories of power. Furthermore, previous research is analyzed relating to the child's best interests and the consequences for youth being placed in compulsory care to see what effects it can lead to.

The study has shown that compulsory care can lead to negative effects for the youth and that the child’s perspective has a multifaceted character which is reflected in the court decisions different interpretations and constructions. The various constructions in the decisions have shown that there seems to be some problems with the interpretation of the law and that the CRC's guidelines are not always used sufficiently. The complexity of decisions shows that the child at times is seen as both as an object and/or a subject. The child's position during the process is therefore a key issue to ensure a legally secure child's perspective.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to illuminate the everyday work of school counsellors in the City of Stockholm with a gender perspective by studying the school counsellors ́ talk about masculinity and femininity. The aim was to reach an understanding of how parts of the counsellors everyday work are influenced by gender through the perspective of the school counsellor. The study was conducted using qualitative methods. Six school counsellors, five woman and one man, were interviewed. An interview method called thematically open interview was used to identify themes regarding aspects of gender in the school counsellors ́ everyday work. The theoretical perspectives that were applied during analysis were Judith Butlers ́ theory on gender performativity and Mimi Shippers ́ theory on gender hegemony. A qualitative data analysis was conducted using hermeneutic principles for interpretation. The results show that the school counsellors gave femininity and masculinity three different meanings, that gender influenced varying aspects of the counsellors work including the interaction with teachers, pupils, parents and principal and that indications of gender hegemony could be found in the stories told by four of the school counsellors. Further some school counsellors experienced gender as an obstacle to a larger extent than others.

    Abstract [en]

The debate surrounding the opinion polls of the political party Sverigedemokraterna, and later their results in the Swedish election has been evident. The purpose of the study is to investigate how norms of equal treatment in social work practice might be influenced by Sverigedemokraterna's understanding of culture, ethnicity, nationality and religion. The thesis is outlined through the works of Teun van Dijk and Ruth Wodak (2000) regarding racist discourse in politics, Giorel Curran (2004) explaining lesser established parties influence on the broader discourses and Anders Hellström and Tom Nilsson (2010) attempting to ideologically position Sverigedemokraterna. With the method for analyzing policy documents designed by Carol Bacchi (2009) the latest motions from Sverigedemokraterna has been analyzed. Bacchi’s theoretical framework, together with theory concerning the expression of modern racism of John Hodge (1999), Paul Gilroy (1999) and Bennedict Anderson (1996) amongst others has been used to create an understanding of the material. The study shows the existence of understandings within the party of cultures as separate and absolute differentiated from each other, coinciding with research on the matter of racism. Hierarchies amongst cultures defined by place of birth are created through the motions. Ideas of a Swedish culture is portrayed as more developed and superior culture. People's different rights of wellfare are made sense of through arguments of birthplace and embodiment of what the party defines as Swedish culture.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper, documents from the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden is examined to investigate how ADHD is presented. A particular focus has been to investigate how sex and gender differences in relation to ADHD are described and further if and in what way the National Board of Health and Welfare's mission on gender integration appears in the documents. To achieve the purpose of this paper, a critical text analysis with a power analytical approach has been conducted to review parts of the National Board of Health and Welfare's material and reports on ADHD. The result of the analysis shows that the National Board of Health and Welfare's document in some parts describes ADHD in a stigmatizing and discriminatory manner, which can contribute to exclusion and social oppression. The National Board of Health and Welfare also partly contributes to maintaining the image of ADHD as a boy's diagnosis, which may cause girls to be overlooked in diagnosis, as the girls' symptoms and experiences are not described in an adequate way in the documents. The results in the paper also show that the gender equality-mission has not been implemented in all parts of the material, which means that the political goals of gender equality have not been achieved in all respects.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to conduct a more detailed description of violence in children’s programs on TV. The purpose of the study is to focus on the violent content and the construction of the violence. Previous research within the field of violence in children’s programs consists of how children experience violence, not what violence is constructed of. In the previous research that has been analysing the construction of violence, it has not been analysing children’s programs. This study was conducted qualitatively with semiotics and connotation as a method, as well as with my own analysis model. The theoretical framework consists of a definition of violence and violence coupled with relational power, and the theoretical framework also consists of symbolic interactionism and its process of making symbols. The results and the analysis consists of a report of which types of violence that exists, and how these actions can be interpreted getting symbolic importance, and what that would convey. The conclusion is that violence can be interpreted in different ways depending on who is doing the act, who is exposed to the act and in which context the act occurs. In the last part of the paper I discuss the results on a more abstract level, and then possible further research.

    Abstract [en]

This study highlights how people born outside of Sweden experience that their participation in a basketball association contributed to integration into the Swedish society and in which ways it occurred. Furthermore, we study how possibilities and limitations are created for the participants to use sports as a platform for integration for the purpose of becoming a part the society. Through a case study we have interview people from a basketball association. The theories we used in this essay is the intersectional perspective and the theory of integration processes to find out how the individual’s ability to integrate can be affected by different social structures. Six themes were created to become the basis of the analysis: Focus on competition – a barrier for integration?, sports as a tool for language development, community as an inclusive factor, basketball - a sport for immigrant women, a social network creates the conditions for integration, and economic benefits of basketball. With the support of the theories we found that all themes have a significance on the individual ability to integrate and that the basketball association has been a platform for out participants to become a part of the community and to develop knowledge of the Swedish language.

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on a social constructivist approach and investigates how the interaction between plaintiff and judiciary affects the outcome of rape judgments. The purpose is to consider this interaction based on a gender perspective to investigate how allegations and assumptions about gender affect the plaintiff’s credibility. The empirical material of the study consists of twelve rape judgments, six of which are freeing outcomes and six with convulsions. In order to analyze these judgments, the following concepts and theories have been used: Nils Christie’s (2001) concept of the ideal victim, Simone de Beauvoir’s (2017), Yvonne Hirdman’s (2003) respective Pierre Bourdieu’s (2004) theory of gender, and Pierre Bourdieu’s (2004) theory of symbolic violence. The result clarifies how the plaintiff's behavior before and after the rape forms the basis for how the district court assesses its credibility. Rape myths are noted to visualize the social structures because of norms and values based on gender perspectives.

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines how people who have been subjected to sexual violence experience the help, support and care that society provides. The purpose is to look at this from a gender perspective to examine how conceptions of sexuality and gender affect the possibility of help, support and care. The essay's empirical material consists of two qualitative sub-studies. The first sub-study was conducted using a survey via Google form that was distributed on social media, in which 89 people responded. The second sub-study aims to provide a deeper understanding of the chosen topic and the empirical data is collected through e-mail contact with the people who in the previous sub-study agreed to in-depth interviews. To analyze this empiricism the following theories and concepts are used: Pierre Bourdieu's (2004) theory of symbolic violence, Simone de Beauvoir's (2017) theory of the second sex and Erving Goffman's (2011) concept of stigma. The result highlights how conceptions of sexuality and gender result in patriarchal structures, which affect the vulnerable at several levels when it comes to seeking and accessing help, support and care. The result also shows that Social Services, in this context, are perceived as invisible and that the majority of the respondents choose not to request support from them. In addition to this, the result shows that good skills and good care are the key to the victim being assisted by support and care.

Fritidsgårdar ur ett miljöpsykolgiskt perspektiv: En studie om inredning, färglära och klasskillnader2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study has been to see if parent- youth relations have an impact on teenagers bullying behaviour and whether we can find any differences between boys and girls. To study this field we have used a quantitative approach using materials from Stockholmsenkäten 2014. In order to analyse the material we have used cross tables, indexes and multivariate cross tables analysis with associated significance test. In this study the attachment theory has been used. The results indicate that parent- youth relations seems to have an impact on teenagers bullying behaviour. The teenagers who bully others are more likely to have a bad parent- youth relations characterized by an insecure attachment to their parents. The opposite tends to apply for those who do not expose others to bullying, these teenagers usually have a good parent- youth relations where they have a secure attachment to their parents. Furthermore the result also indicate that the nature of the parent- youth relations along with if the adolescents expose others to bullying did not differ between boys and girls.

    Abstract [en]

The essay is based on an examination of the individual- and structure-based perspectives that have been the reason why some young people choose to commit crimes and continue to maintain a criminal behavior during adolescence. The study is based on a qualitative study by interviewing six young men with criminal pasts. The aim was to gain insight into these young men's life-stories to understand what made them commit crimes and what sustained them in a life of crime. As authors, we were able to create a greater understanding, based on their life-stories and experiences, of their criminal behavior by the theoretical aspects such as the dark side of social capital and stigma. The results demonstrate how individual- and structure-based factors such as unstable family relationships, stigmatism at school and associations with other criminals can have an impact on young people’s tendency to commit crimes. In our final discussion, we describe how the criminal network impacted on these young men’s social capital and what help they received, or did not receive, by representatives of society.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study has been to research the underlying factors or causes that affect women who are living with violence in their relationships not to report the violence they have been exposed to. Even the possible links between women's first contact with Social authority and whether that contact is crucial for women's decision to proceed with a report to the police or not is being investigated. The study is a qualitative study where the empirical data consists of eight interviews. The interviews were held with four women who used to live with violence in their relationships and with four social workers who works in teams for domestic abuse specialised for women in various districts in the city of Stockholm. The results in the stud yshow that both the way the women were treated and the support they received was not adapted to the needs of the women. The result of the study also shows that different authorities do not have enough cooperation, which means that women who have experienced domestic abuse do not get the best help possible.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to illustrate how the public conversation about the online campaign #metoo was conducted on the social media platform Twitter in the fall of 2017. Using qualitative content analysis as a method, we studied tweets containing #metoo by identifying how support, criticism and other prominent messages were formulated in the online campaign. Our results showed that support and criticism under #metoo were expressed in many different ways. We identified that support was shown to vulnerable women and the campaign itself. We also identified that several individuals supported the fact that certain groups of men has been publicly accused for committing sexual crimes. The criticism of the campaign has partly shown a resistance against feminists and feminism. We have also found criticism against that white men has been accused for sexual crimes, where these writers mean that the actual perpetrators are of different ethnic or cultural backgrounds. Another criticism has also been raised against the campaign where several writers claim that the campaign has received a defected focus. These writers claim that #metoo has become a platform for publicly accusing individuals, instead of concentrating the campaign on sexual violence and harassment as a social problem.

    Abstract [en]

Our purpose with this paper was to examine if the secondary housing market affects the social workers in their work with homeless clients who have or have had substance abuse problems. Since we felt that the social worker's perceived reality is of most interest to us we chose to conduct qualitative interviews with four social workers. The interview guide was formed with the help of Michael Lipsky's book Street-Level Bureaucracy (2010) in which he describes his theory of the street-level profession, this book has also permeated the whole process and was used as a tool in the analysis of our empirical work. The background section is intended to provide a broad understanding of the complexity of homelessness, and then in the prior research section we taper to the research that deals with aspects of our purpose. We will in our concluding discussion argue that the secondary housing market affects the social workers in different ways when they have to accept the lessors requirements. The apartments that make up the secondary housing market is provided mainly by public lessors, as these are now to be operated commercially the demand on the tenants has increased. We have chosen to call this essay Secondary tenants and we who have written the essay are Marcus Vesterlund and Anders Wallin.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to answer how social workers conceptualize the risk of violence in their workplace. The data consisted of seven interviews with social workers working in financial aid departments in or around the Stockholm area. Semi structured interviews were used to gather the data which then were processed with a fenomenographic method. The data was analyzed with Lazarus and Folkman theory on coping and Antonovsky’s generalized resistance resources. The findings in this study shows that all respondents have experienced threats or violence in some form in their work. They use strategies to cope with both the situation at hand and the emotions connected to the event. The respondents were affected in their spare time to some extent. It will be argued that there is a form of duality between to not accept violence and at the same time have understanding for client’s vulnerable situation and for the effect social workers decision-making have on the client’s lives.

Våld som biljett till gemenskap: En studie om huliganism som ett socialt fenomen.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this paper, mental illness among youths is studied by interviewing professionals whom work close to the youths. The purpose is to investigate the causes of mental illness among youths. Youths are defined as people between the ages of 12 and 19 years old. In order to gain an understanding of the causes of mental illness circumstances in the youths´ lives are analyzed based on an intersectional perspective and a “social order theory”. Another purpose is to try to determine what circumstances prevent mental illness or help the youths to overcome it. To investigate this, semi structured interviews are conducted with professionals whom work close to the youths in Stockholm. The collected data is analyzed with a qualitative analysis method. The study’s results show that high stress, high pressure, high demands and unstable living conditions are behind the mental illness of the youths. In addition, the gender system and the class system are significant structures that affect the health of the youth. Furthermore, function variations and citizenship status are identified as factors that cause differences in mental illness within the group. Social support is the most important factor in the prevention of mental illness. The conclusions that these findings reveal are that the structure of society and the design of the school as well as the individualization of society are the causes of mental illness as well as the reasons for the differences within the group of youths.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This essay consists of an analytical study of three present-day Swedish films depiction of teenage life. From these films we like to see how youths are described, what attributes they are given, in shape of attire and different symbolic items, such as language and body expressions. The essay emphasizes which values that dominates among the illustrated teenage groups and compares it to the values and expectations that we can derive from an adult society. Here we let the school’s main determining base documents, Lpo 94 and Lpf 94, represent the dominating values of the society.

Our hypothesis is that media, and also these films, creates images that affects the societies comprehension of teenagers and also how teens see themselves. Overall, which images and stereotypes that young and adults wrestle with. We want to show illustrated values and standards that teens meet in the schools and vice versa and also what kind of image the main determining base documents give of what the youths shall become.

The comprehensive method used is based on analysis of what norms and values that are supplied through the three chosen films and the school main determining base documents, Lpo 94 and Lpf 94, and to compare the results. The comparison is based upon theoretical competence within the social psychology and culture analytical perspective.

The analysis concluded that the school main determining base documents to some extent meet the youth characters thoughts. However, the documents also emphasize some controversial human characteristics, which not completely comply with the youth’s views and opinions.

På vilka grunder väljer föräldrar skola?2010Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study is made in Nacka, a suburb of the capital of Sweden, Stockholm, and focuses on “the parental school choice" that takes place when children start in first grade at the age of six.

New differences in the number of pupils attending various municipal schools have appeared after reforms in the early 1990s giving parents free choice of elementary school for their children. Some schools are located in areas where most children have a middle class background, while others are placed in less attractive surroundings where the parents have a lower educational status, and are more often immigrants. Parents living in the latter kind of surroundings can now send their children to schools further off, but located in more attractive areas. This leads to some schools get an increasing number of pupils and others gets a decreasing. The income of schools in Sweden is largely based on the number of pupils; the idea behind the reform is that schools with a good educational quality should be rewarded by the system. But other factors also influence the parent’s choice; bad rumors, good reputations, the number of children with immigrant background, the physical surroundings and social atmosphere where the school is located, and maybe also ethnical prejudice. My study concerns the grounds upon which school the parents choose the first school for their children in a part of Nacka municipality. The study is based on staff interviews from a school located in a socio-economically disfavored area as well as interviews and questionnaire surveys with parents having a choice between the nearby school and a school located in a more wealthy area. I found that the parent’s primary criterion when choosing schools is still proximity. When looking at the group that has opted out the most nearby schools however, the reputation of the local school – the spreading of bad rumors – proved to be a major influence. An example from the answers I received is the following:

I chose a school based on the number of immigrants in it, my child should have a safe schooling, it’s said that schools with a lot of immigrants have an atmosphere that is much tougher, I’ve heard from others, that the “apartment complex” school is a tougher school to attend. (Interview Lisa, verbal, March 2010)

Many parents obviously prefer not to have their children attend a school located in a socio-economic disfavored area with a large low-income and/or immigrant population. They are worried that their children will have trouble even getting the final grade from primary school, which is a precondition to entering the secondary, “gymnasium” level.

Från aktiv narkoman till aktiv hjälpare: En kvalitativ studie om sex individers väg till och bibehållande av ett nyktert liv2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how individuals have emerged out of substance abuse and how they stay sober. To achieve this we have done qualitative interviews with sober drug addicts. The collected empirical data has been analyzed using the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) that assumes that change occurs gradually and through processes. The result shows that the individual experience negative consequences of the drug abuse and often reaches a personal rock bottom before he or she choose to terminate.  The process of change partly occurs through a spiritual awakening. To maintain the sobriety our study also shows that the relationship to God and relatives are important. Finding a new purpose in life where you help other people is also significant.

Genustrubbel: En intervjustudie om föräldralediga pappor utifrån maskulinitet2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze attitudes towards migration among 15 European countries in the year of 2014/15 and examine which factors that may explain these differences. This by examining whether attitude differences towards migration can be explained by economic and educational factors and additionally, if these differences can be explained in relation to welfare regimes. Based on data conducted by European Social Survey Round 7, this paper analyzes the correlation between attitudes towards migration among the countries by dividing the term “migration attitudes” into three aspects; attitudes concerning to what extent the country should allow people to come and live in the country, attitudes concerning how important qualifications of the people that come to live in the country and finally attitudes concerning if people that come to live in the country benefit the country in some way. The correlation is analyzed by using both linear and multiple regression. The results show that countries belonging to the Social Democratic regime show more positive migration attitudes in relation to the remaining welfare regimes, which tend to be explained by their high degree of social support and low social stratification. Both the Conservative and Liberal welfare regimes indicate that qualifications of the people that come to live in the country are important, although the Conservative welfare regimes tend to show a higher degree of solidarity for immigrants. The East and Central European welfare regimes show the most negative migration attitudes in relation to the remaining welfare regimes, which can be explained by the low degree of solidarity for immigrants in accordance with previous studies. In conclusion the study shows that more factors should be examined to seek explanation of attitude differences towards migration, as the result indicate that these differences can not solely be explained by welfare regimes.

Ensamkommande barn - harmlösa eller hotfulla?: En textanalys om hur ensamkommande barn beskrivs i media2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
