Emancipation at the crossroads between the ‘woman question’ and the ‘national question’2018In: The Palgrave Handbook of Women and Gender in Twentieth-Century Russia and the Soviet Union, London: Palgrave Macmillan, 2018, p. 117-131Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter examines the work of the Commission for the Improvement of the Work and Everyday Life of Women (KUTBZh), focusing on the intersection of Soviet policies on women’s emancipation with the politics of emancipation of nations, starting with those who were classified before 1917 as inorodtsy. The chapter examines in particular detail the work of KUTBZh in the Volga-Urals region. KUTBZh held a very unstable position, vacillating between the role of offering choices and new opportunities for women and serving as a state-directed vehicle for forced Sovietisation. As time went by, it was the latter role that dominated. © The Author(s) 2018.

    Abstract [en]

The liberation of the family from the excessive control of the state, support of children's moral values, the improvement of childcare, and overcoming the demographic crisis have all influenced recent discussions on preschool education and care in Russia. The essay analyses how different, and often conflicting, formulations of public interests' influenced preschool institutions in Russia during the last 25 years. The essay also seeks to explore contemporary evaluations of preschools in the context of the interpretations offered by public discussions and parents of the Soviet practice of childcare.

Regional Ombudsmen, Human Rights and Women - Gender Aspects of Social and Legal Transformation in North-West Russia: (based on ombudsman reports)2012In: The Soviet and Post-Soviet Review, ISSN 1075-1262, E-ISSN 1876-3324, Vol. 39, p. 84-109Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the center of the article is the new regional ombudsman institution in Russia and its activities vis-à-vis the protection of women’s rights. The article seeks to analyze how complaints filed by women are presented and how the status of women’s rights within the context of human rights is described in the ombudsmen’s annual reports. The analysis of the reports proves ambiguities of interpretations of human rights; it also shows that many of those filing complaints do it because of the violations of social and civil rights, and that the majority of those experiencing discrimination are women. However, in most of the cases the ombudspersons do not pay attention to the gender-specific dimensions of the discrimination nor have they identified this as an important problem in contemporary Russian society. This situation is connected with the absence of a legal or political mechanism for gender equality in Russia as well as a displacement of women’s rights issues in favor of a focus on family issues and demography in the Russian public discourse of the late 2000s.

Soviet People with Female Bodies: Performing Beauty and Maternity in Soviet Russia in the mid 1930-1960s2007Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other scientific)
    Abstract [en]

The everyday practices of maternity and beauty are important for the enactment of femininity. This dissertation deals with femininities created in the context of changing ideas about “normality” in Soviet Russia during the mid 1930s-1960s and explores a diversity of norms, discourses and rituals. The main sources are women’s magazines, advice books, and interviews with women living now in three different cities of the Russian Federation – Moscow, Saratov (Volga region) and Ufa (capital of Bashkortostan Republic).

The results of the research suggest that some parts of the Soviet discourses on maternity and beauty turn out to be similar to those that were characteristic for other European countries of the same historical period. At the same time the interviews show that the modern practices of medical and welfare institutions, the consumption of clothes as well as advice about appearance and childcare were situated in the context of shortages of goods, women’s work outside of home, rhetorics of the “naturalness” of maternity for every woman as well as that of a woman’s particular need to care about looking nice. Together with the home reproduction of many rural/patriarchal rituals of maternity and beauty it led to a contradictory everyday performance of femininity. Fluctuating categories of social status, ethnical belonging, geographical location and generation also contributed to a diversity of femininity constructions. Common sense normativities concerning practices of becoming a mother, caring for a baby and making oneself beautiful suggest that Soviet discourses on maternity and beauty were only partly accepted and reproduced by women. They were also partly rejected and subverted in everyday practices. The analysis of maternity and beauty practices shows that performative femininities were utterly complex.

Solidariteten med Chile 1973–19892016Collection (editor) (Other academic)
