Art contre/against Apartheid at Lunds Konsthall: an Entangled History of Art and Solidarity from Paris to Pretoria2022In: Artl@s Bulletin, ISSN 2264-2668, Vol. 11, no 2, article id 8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article concerns the international touring exhibition Art contre/against Apartheid originating in France and which reached Lunds konsthall, Sweden in 1984 and was to tour the world for ten years. The aim with this exhibition was to raise awareness of the apartheid regime, cause international protest and ultimately remove the repressive political system. Using histoire croisée as a method this article investigates the different interests and stake-holders in the exhibition at Lunds konsthall, including the critique of the exhibition as resting on white supremacy. The purpose of the article is to locate the different intersections regarding international art, international politics and local history manifested through this exhibition.

Att måla med det vita bläcket: Monica Sjöö och Kosmos inom hennes livmoder2012In: Tidskrift för Genusvetenskap, ISSN 1654-5443, E-ISSN 2001-1377, Vol. 4, no 4, p. 105-128Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article grapples with the painting Cosmos in her Womb from 1971, by the Swedish artist and British resident Monica Sjöö (1938-2005), which was recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm. Sjöö is an artist that is both at the centre of feminist art history and somewhat kept to one side; her work is often included in larger surveys of feminist art, yet rarely interpreted. The article argues that in order to approach the painting, one has to look at it from within its own time and the women’s movement in the 1970’s in which the artist was heavily involved.

In her article from 1975 Hélèn Cixous calls for women to start writing in white ink, an ink that is coloured by the experience of being born in a woman’s body. Sjöö’s painting was created a few years before and also Sjöö was, during her whole career, engaged with the idea of the “woman’s experience”.

The article argues that in whichever way this painting is approached, by understanding it’s figure, it’s symbolism, or even the roughness of the placard-like material (paint on masonite), it all falls back on the political and spiritual quest of Monica Sjöö. There can be no analysis of this work without taking into account the political situation and the need for expressing the woman’s experience during the late 1960s and early 1970s.  The article is a close study of this particular piece which is approached from a four different points of view: the historical context of the painting within the women’s movement; the need to speak from a woman’s experience; the political and theoretical differences of representing the woman’s body in art and lastly the idea of protest presented through the painting.

Disrupted Perspectives: Interpreting "Friends" by Hanna Hirsch-Pauli2011In: Konsthistorisk Tidskrift, ISSN 0023-3609, E-ISSN 1651-2294, Vol. 80, no 3, p. 153-167Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article interprets the disrupted perspectives in Hanna Hirsch-Pauli's large scale painting Vanner (Friends) from 1900-1907. When Hirsch-Pauli turns to her living room in 1900 as a setting for her painting several agents are at play. The scene is staged in the Pauli's living room, where friends have gathered around Ellen Key, and the home is presented as a place for intellectual debate. It is a scene deeply embedded in the surrounding cultural and political life. The article looks into the importance of the home as a scene both within the picture and in society at large at the turn of the twentieth century. The article also argues that the setting in the home and the painting's twarthed compositions are related to the formation of identity. By identifying different types of perspectives such as the artist's presence in the image, or the direction of the gazes, certain aspects of otherness are discussed. Furthermore, through the social, historical and compositional setting of this painting some aspects of Hanna Hirsch-Pauli's disrupted perspectives are uncovered.

Från flux till fest: Den internationella konsten i Lunds konsthall 1965-19672022 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

“The small stage looked like a battlefield after a wild party: a smashed violin, lots of sweets and confetti, large puddles of black ink and lakes of water, in which all this was floating around.”

The starting point for this publication is sheer curiosity about what happened at Lunds konsthall between 1965 and 1967, when part of the experimental international art scene centered in Paris, showed up in the city of Lund.

Superlund: Lunds konsthall och det centrala i det perifera2018In: Periskop, ISSN 0908-6919, E-ISSN 2596-4283, no 20, p. 91-109Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article concerns the Swedish law "Kulturmiljölag (1988:950)" regulating export and trade on arts and antiquities. The law states that a range of objects that may be of particular interest and "great importance" ("stor betydelse") to the nation must be licensed before being transported out of Sweden. The original objective of the law, when proposed in the 1920s, was as a means to protect privately owned objects of potential national heritage culture value.

The aim of this article is to scrutinize the subtext of art the historical frameworks the law and its enforcement depend on. This regulation is controlled and formulated by the Swedish National Heritage Board who has determined that an object's age and its monetary value are the first primary guidelines for selection. This article shows how price is an unstable value for judging cultural heritage. Furthermore how cultural heritage management of arts and antiquities rests on non-transparent value judgements regarding what is and is not of historical importance. The analysis covers two case studies where one, the Sparre collection was protected by the law and the other, work by Amalia Lindegren, never could have been. These case studies show the haphazard nature of the present law and its regulations.

Troubling Peripheries: Pierre Restany and Superlund2021In: Konsthistorisk Tidskrift, ISSN 0023-3609, E-ISSN 1651-2294, Vol. 90, no 1, p. 13-24Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article chronicles the French critic Pierre Restany and his 1967 exhibition Superlund at Lunds Konsthall in Sweden. Throughout his life and work Restany travelled the globe and engaged in local art scenes, often described as peripheries. But when did Lund, a town in southern Sweden, become the periphery, and with reference to which centre? When Restany engaged with the so-called peripheries in order to escape the art scene in Paris, he also brought with him Paris as a symbolic centre. This article explores how the critic and his exhibition conflate the dichotomy in art historiography between centre and periphery in the intersection between place, people and art.

Exhibiting Art in a European Periphery?: International Art in Sweden during the Cold War2022In: Artl@s Bulletin, ISSN 2264-2668, Vol. 11, no 2, p. 127-132, article id 10Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The project Exhibiting Art in a European Periphery? International Art in Sweden during the Cold War aimed to investigate international exhibitions in Sweden during the postwar period from circa 1945 to the end of the 1980s. The main objective was to find information beyond preconceived ideas of what is important, interesting, or simply good art. In this article, we present our method for searching through the archives and some of the findings and insights generated.
