Understanding Critical Citizenship and Other Forms of Public Dissatisfaction: An Alternative Framework2012In: Politics, Culture and Socialization, ISSN 1866-3427, E-ISSN 2196-1417, Vol. 3, no 1-2, p. 179-196Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Previous research has paid much attention to citizen dissatisfaction and the trends of growing political disaffection, cynicism, and scepticism – in short, the emergence of 'critical citizens'. Also, more recently, critical citizens have sometimes been viewed as an asset for democracy. However, despite both pessimistic and optimistic interpretations of public criticism, the issue of conceptualizing negative attitudes has received less attention. The present study was conducted to enrich understanding of this particular dimension of citizens' attitudes. To this end, the paper suggests an alternative theoretical framework for analysing various forms of negative political orientations. The framework has been tested empirically using three types of statistical procedures, which demonstrate its validity and usefulness.

Procedural Fairness and Political Trust Among Young People: Lessons from a panel study on Swedish High School Students2015In: Acta Politica, ISSN 0001-6810, E-ISSN 1741-1416, Vol. 50, no 3, p. 253-278Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The role of ‘fair’ institutions in developing democratic legitimacy has received increased attention. Citizens who perceive – on basis of past experiences – that they are being treated fairly by authorities have been held to have greater trust in political institutions. However, previous studies on the relationship between procedural fairness and political trust have not paid sufficient attention to individuals with limited first-hand experiences of authorities. We examine the relationship on an authority that virtually all individuals meet early in life: the school. Using structural equation modeling on unique panel data covering 1500 Swedish adolescents (ages ranging from 13 to 17), we find a reciprocal relationship: personal encounters with school authorities shape young people’s political trust; however, the images that adolescents get of the political system (through family, peers, media and so on) have also consequences on their perceptions about the authorities they encounter in their daily lives. The analysis increases our understanding of how individuals form their political allegiances by showing that the relationship between fairness and trust is more dynamic than has previously been suggested: neither an accumulated set of experiences of authorities nor formal ties with political institutions (as voters and so on) are required for a relationship to emerge.

    Abstract [en]

Since the 1990s, the Swedish school system has become increasingly more diversified. Decentralization, the introduction of private schools, the challenge of globalization & increased ethnic diversity among pupils have contributed to an increasing heterogeneity. This project analyses the prospects for civic education in different institutional settings & contexts, in both public & private schools. Using unique survey data 1999 & 2009 we ask which effects different institutional settings have on "citizen competences," i.e., civic engagement, political efficacy, knowledge about democracy & political issues, & democratic values & tolerance. The project breaks down into three distinct but interrelated parts. The first deals with changes over time in young Swedes' civic competences. The second subproject focuses on the way & consequences when controversial issues are taught in different schools & institutional settings. The third sub-project adds a comparative perspective by analyzing similarities & differences among young people & schools in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland & England. Political Participation in Brazil and Sweden: The Role of Stereotypes and Contagion2016In: Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa, ISSN 0102-3772, E-ISSN 1806-3446, Vol. 32, p. -10, article id e32ne223Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study assessed the influence of Stereotypes about Parliamentarians and Behavioral Contagion on Political Participation, comparing two countries: Brazil and Sweden. Stereotypes were admitted to be useful to tell parliamentarians' groups apart and predict their behavior. Behavioral Contagion was investigated as a possible catalyst of political action. Online questionnaires were administered to 984 Brazilians (37.4% women) and 879 Swedes (46.5% women). Structural Equation Modeling assessed relationships among variables. Behavioral Contagion played a pivotal role on predicting political engagement. Stereotypes predicted participation where they challenged commonsense: Brazilians usually cannot tell the difference among politicians, then those Brazilians who could were more politically engaged; in Sweden, the factor "corruption" predicts non-institutional types of Participation.

    Abstract [en]

The article applies a citizens' perspective on the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), which was introduced in the Treaty of the European Union. The CFSP has subsequently been reinforced through the introduction of more coherent instruments and more efficient decision-making. In 1999, the EU assumed a more explicitly military dimension into its sphere of activities, by initiating the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP). Drawing on the Eurobarometer and the Candidate Countries Eurobarometer, the article demonstrates the readiness of EU citizens to accept the notion of the EU as a foreign policy actor. The cross-national variation in the data suggests that support for the CFSP and the ESDP is closely related to general support for the EU as such. It would seem that, to most citizens, foreign policy remains a rather abstract or remote policy field. A significant part of the public support for the CFSP and the ESDP can thus be labelled as uninformed or diffuse support.

Euroskepticism bland partier och medborgare: tidigare forskning, förklaringar och förslag på analysmodeller2009In: Statsvetenskaplig Tidskrift, ISSN 0039-0747, Vol. 111, no 2, p. 135-166Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article confronts some general methodological issues involved when analyzing 'euroscepticism,' ie., opposition to European integration. Reviewing the literature on party-based & public euroscepticism, the article proceeds with a presentation & critical examination of conceptual frameworks & models suggested in previous research on public attitudes towards the EU. Drawing on eg., the Eurobarometer surveys, the strengths & weaknesses of different analytical frameworks arc demonstrated. The article concludes with a discussion about measurement issues related to empirical analyses of public opposition to European integration. Adapted from the source document.

Olika former av internationalisering?: Replik till Marie Demker2009In: Statsvetenskaplig Tidskrift, ISSN 0039-0747, Vol. 111, no 3, p. 283-289Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

A reply to Marie Demker on Swedish, European and international political science arguing that while Demker's analysis points towards potential real problems, these issues are not as pronounced as one might believe. It is problematic and innovation threatening that theories and models in political science are driven by social scientists in the United States. However, it is not true that Sweden in this case would merely become a case study; instead Swedish political scientists are experts in the political relations of Sweden and this information can directly benefit the political scientists in other countries and thus advancing the science. While English is clearly the linuga franca of our time, Swedish is still the most popular dissertation language and Sweden is by far the most common research subject in Sweden. L. Pitkaniemi

Political Participation and Regime Stability: A Framework for Analyzing Hybrid Regimes2009In: International Political Science Review, ISSN 0192-5121, E-ISSN 1460-373X, Vol. 30, no 1, p. 7-31Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In past decades a number of countries that have moved away from outright authoritarianism have not transformed into democracies, but rather into regimes that combine democratic and non-democratic characteristics, sometimes labeled hybrid regimes. This article develops a framework for analyzing hybrid regimes. Empirically, the article examines three cases, Tanzania, Russia, and Venezuela, looking specifically at electoral participation and support for the opposition, as well as the potential for political change, i.e. public discontent and conditions for mobilization. The article demonstrates that the stability of hybrid regimes is related to the incumbents' ability to circumvent the opposition, but also to the lack of interplay between citizens and opposition parties.

    Abstract [en]

Drawing on cross-national public opinion surveys from the spring of 2014, this article analyses popular support for democracy in the three Baltic states – more specifically the attitudinal differences between the ethnic majorities and the Russian-speaking minorities in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It assesses the democratic political culture of the three countries 25 years after the fall of communism in Europe, 10 years after EU membership, a few years after the global financial crisis, and in the midst of the recent Russian–Ukrainian crisis. The data demonstrate widespread public dissatisfaction with democracy throughout the region, especially in Latvia, the country hardest hit by the crisis in 2008–2009. As a rule, the Russian-speaking minorities in the three Baltic states tend to be more critical of democracy than ethnic Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians.

The times they are a-changing: the internationalisation of Swedish political science2007In: European Political Science, ISSN 1680-4333, Vol. 6, no 3, p. 268-275Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines the current state of political science in Sweden, by looking at the contents of recent years' doctoral dissertations. To what extent do young Swedish political scientists seek to make their research available to an international audience? The findings indicate that Swedish political scientists are becoming increasingly more oriented towards the international research community. The use of the English language in doctoral dissertations has increased. Also, Swedish political scientists have taken increasingly more interest in international affairs, instead of writing exclusively about Swedish politics. Adapted from the source document.
