    Abstract [sv]

Krissamhällets miljödebatt: om expertkunskapens roll i offentlig deliberation2011In: Rhetorica Scandinavica, ISSN 1397-0534, E-ISSN 2002-7974, no 59, p. 69-82Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Rhetoric and diplomacy shares something we might call the problem of representation, arising out of the difficulties to ever accurately represent something. In the article, this joint problem is approached through an investigation into its different solutions, taking us from Plato’s and Aristotle’s critique ofthe sophists, through Demosthenes’ and Aeschines’ joint effort to create peace between Athens and Philip II of Macedon, to Rousseau, Kant, and contemporary scholars studying diplomatic rhetoric. In Kant’s idea of perpetual peace and Perelman’s conceptof a universal audience, we eventually find what we might call modernity’s answer to this ancient problem, the acceptance of what in Hegelian parlance could be called the bad infinity of diplomatic and rhetorical communication. Finally, and by contrast, Lacan’s use of the diplomat as an illustration of the limits of representation is discussed and the possibility of avoiding the endless dialectic of trial and error is developed.

Ironier och katakreser: Populismens logik eller kommunismens idé?2023In: Rhetorica Scandinavica, ISSN 1397-0534, E-ISSN 2002-7974, Vol. 27, no 85, p. 1-20Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article takes its starting point in the shift in how democracy is understood within Scandinavian rhetorical studies, where an agonistic or an antagonistic perspective has come to surpass a previously dominating consensus-oriented notion of democracy. The article investigates how this transformation has influenced the rhetorical analysis of populism since it can no longer be dismissed as purely anti-democratic. The article approaches this question through a reading of two thinkers of the antagonism, Slavoj Žižek and Ernesto Laclau, and their discussion concerning populism. Through examples gathered from the rhetorical transformation of Swedish Conservative Party Moderaterna, the article aims to extract, out of Žižek’s and Laclau’s respective work, two different perspectives on how to understand the rhetoricity constitutive of the antagonistic ontology of the political. By focusing on the catachresis or irony, a rhetorical tradition committed to thinking the antagonism can develop two opposing views on how populism relates to democracy.

    Abstract [en]

This text aims at investigating the possible effects that Cassin’s rereading of the battle between the philosophers and the sophist might have on the contemporary understanding of the connection between rhetoric and the political. Through her critique of Plato and Aristotle the conflict between Philosophy and Sophistics is perceived as one regarding being (ontology/logology) rather than, as traditionally, one of knowledge (epistemology/doxology). Finally, a possible foundation for a logological understanding of the political is sketched with the help of concepts from Lacanian psychoanalysis.

    Abstract [en]

In medieval Sweden, many church bells were inscribed with texts, often formulated in the Latin language. These inscribed bells were then hung in remote places such as church towers or detached bell-towers and could therefore not easily be read. For whom were these words intended? The present article will discuss the function and purpose of these inscriptions in the Swedish medieval society, through the eyes of the terms ‘rhetorical situation’ and ‘genre’. This discussion leads up to a definition of ‘monumental rhetoric’ or ‘the rhetoric of durability’, that is how rhetorical efficiency is achieved in inscriptions.

    Abstract [en]

A growing field of research is environmental humanities. This is a result of the increased awareness that mankind’s great challenges can’t be solved solely by science. Climate change, for instance, is not only a question of information or technology. It is dependent of millions of citizens making everyday choices between values that are in conflict with each other, for example to refrain from eating meat even though it is delicious, or for a local politician, to implement tolls to reduce traffic, against the will of motoring voters. Humanities and communication studies have proven fruitful for the understanding of why people choose and react as they do and for understanding the conditions for change. Rhetoric has a rather unemployed potential in this endeavor. This article charts the background and research front of environmental rhetoric and suggest three lines of further studies and an approach to integrate research, teaching and citizenship.
