Why are care workers from the global south disadvantaged?: Inequality and discrimination in Swedish elderly care work2020In: Ethnic and Racial Studies, ISSN 0141-9870, E-ISSN 1466-4356, Vol. 43, no 16, p. 155-174Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Using quantitative and qualitative methods, this study investigates inequalities in occupational status and wages between native-born and foreign-born employees in elderly care institutions in Sweden. It finds that employees from Africa, Asia and Latin America - the "Global South" - are disadvantaged in both respects. Combinatory explanations of the inequalities are needed. The shorter work experience of foreign-born workers in the care sector plus the lesser value given to educational credentials obtained outside Sweden are among the factors related to human capital theory. Access to less-valuable resources in the workplace social networks of foreign-born employees is related to social capital theory. The processes that result in exclusion from powerful social networks, in turn, are found to be affected by discrimination in the workplace.

HR:s egna möjligheter till kompetensutveckling inom statlig sektor2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The HR industry is a fast-growing and rapidly developing field setting high demands on HR-professionals to keep abreast of change. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to explore the possibilities HR-professionals in governmental organisations have in order to develop their HR-competencies. In order to do this the thesis has sought out to explore what motivates competency development and how it is put into practice by interviewing four HR-professionals. The analysis has been conducted with the help of the theory of Situated learning. The result of the thesis is that HR-professionals develop their HR-competencies both through formal and informal learning although they prefer to use informal learning through their communities of practice. The tasks conducted by HR-professionals as well as their formal education differ to a vast extent which acts as a motivation for competency development. Another factor which motivates HR-professionals’ competency development is that the HR field is rapidly changing which sets high demands on them, both through their organisations and through the individuals themselves, to continuously learn in their profession.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine through qualitative interviews leisure-time teachers view on their work environment and work situation, how they are affected by it and whether they believe it can be influenced. In the study, five active leisure-time teachers at different schools are interviewed about their professional practice and work situation. In the analysis of the empirical material, Aaron Antonovsky's theory of sense of coherence or SOC with comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness is applied. The result shows that leisure-time teachers consider that shortcomings in their physical work environment and finances limit the conditions for carrying out their work. What mainly limited and affected the leisure-time teachers was the psychological work environment where their workload was heavy and they felt they constantly needed to be in line with the primary school teacher and be available. This caused various symptoms of stress and frustration. Finally the leisure-time teachers present different approaches for influencing their work situation.

Att ställa om över en natt: En fallstudie om upplevelser av en oplanerad förändringsprocess till digital verksamhet ur ett sensemaking perspektiv2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how change processes created under abrupt conditions are experienced and how they function, by studying the change process from an employee perspective, with connection to sensemaking.

Theoretical framework: The theories in this study are based partly on previous research of organizational change, where we bring up factors for success and failure on different levels and partly on crisis management that gives an understanding of changes created under abrupt and unplanned circumstances. Also, previous research on e-learning and distance examination is used to gain an understanding of the organizational changes which this study is based on. The three theoretical foundations of this study are regarded though a sensemaking perspective which is recurring throughout the whole study.

Method: The thesis is a qualitative case study which take an interactive approach. The result is collected throughout 8 semi-structured interviews from employees who worked during the time of the change. The result is processed and analyzed through transcription, thematization and coding.

Result: The result of the thesis shows how the respondents experienced and perceived the change from a past, present and future perspective, where the factors that influenced the experience are described together with the problems and difficulties that emerged.

Conclusion: The teachers perceived the change as positive and successful so far. It was perceived as sudden and intense but though a great understanding, empathy, community and humility towards the change, the situation and each other, they managed the situation beyond expectation. The main conclusion is that the factors that have influenced the employees' experience were the attitude towards change, their feelings and understanding of the situation as well as shared opinions and past experience. It is through these factors that the respondents saw the change as feasible and meaningful. Conclusions about the difficulties that arose were to design materials digitally and that there was a perceived lack of interaction between teachers and students. Implementation was also perceived to have a high learning speed to learn the technique and the increased workload was perceived as a difficulty.

Staffing agency: A bridge to working during retirement.2022In: Work: A journal of Prevention, Assessment and rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, E-ISSN 1875-9270, Vol. 72, no 2, p. 529-537Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: The ageing population has initiated a debate about a prolonged working life. There is an interest in finding the pre-retirement predictors of bridge employment and retirement decisions, but the understanding of the experiences of bridge employees is still limited.

OBJECTIVES: The aim was to describe the characteristics of the pensioners working for a staffing agency, their motivational aspects, work patterns and types of services they provided.

METHODS: This article analyses the results from a Swedish staffing agency's yearly co-worker questionnaire from December 2017. The response rate was 44% (N = 1741). The design is descriptive, with correlation analyses and construction of typical cases.

RESULTS: Most study participants were aged 65-74 years. Sixty-five percent were men, 66% were cohabitating/married, dominating education level was secondary school or higher education (79% ). Important incentives for working were the social context and to gain extra income. A majority of the respondents also stated that their work increased their overall well-being. Seventy-eight percent worked 25 hours per month or less, 37% wanted to work more, 3% wanted to work less. Private services dominated with 61% ; most common were gardening (43% ), trades (33%) and cleaning (31% ).

CONCLUSIONS: More men than women chose this form of work. While single women need to work out of economic necessity, men, to a larger extent, work for the social context and well-being. The highest work frequency in 2017 (14%) in the population was found for those who retired in 2015, i.e. two years after their retirement year. A majority indicated that the work they were doing was different from earlier in their working life.

Taktisk improvisation: Insatsstyrkans praktiska kunskap i ickelinjära domäner2023 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

The Road to Retirement: A Life Course Perspective on Labor Market Trajectories and Retirement Behaviors2023In: Work, Aging and Retirement, ISSN 2054-4642, E-ISSN 2054-4650Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

While a prolonged working life has been mainly feasible for people with the most advantageous working careers, knowledge about the barriers for those with vulnerable occupational paths is still scarce. This study explores the conditions for prolonged working life from a perspective on labor market trajectories. Drawing from a gendered life course perspective and that (dis)advantageous tends to accumulate over time, we investigate the opportunity structure for the most disadvantaged workers and which characteristics of labor market trajectories can explain the decision to work longer. To this end, a Swedish longitudinal survey and register data from the Panel Survey of Ageing and the Elderly (PSAE) were used, following people across a substantial part of their working life. With sequence analysis, we identified 5 trajectories that represent typical labor market trajectories from mid-life until retirement age. Our findings showed that labor market precarity in mid-life remained a key characteristic until the expected retirement age, showing both early signs of early labor market exit and a precarity trap into a prolonged working life. These findings emphasize the need to identify at-risk groups early in their careers and that mid-life interventions are needed to prevent involuntary labor market exits and to ensure a sustainable working life. In particular, the need to protect older workers with turbulent or precarious labor market trajectories against labor market risks and retirement schemes that could inadvertently contribute to increased social and economic inequality in later life.

"Hoppas jag får en plats vid mitt gäng": En kvalitativ studie om aktivitetsbaserade kontor och hur de kan upplevas av medarbetare2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Employer-oriented labour market policies in Sweden: Creating jobs and the division of labour in the public sector2019In: International Social Security Review, ISSN 0020-871X, E-ISSN 1468-246X, Vol. 72, no 2, p. 75-95Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In many European countries, greater importance is accorded to labour market policies in which employers are involved in activating unemployed people. Such employer-oriented policies target employers’ demand for labour and attempt to influence their willingness to hire, train or guide (often disadvantaged) unemployed groups. Using data from a qualitative interview study of an employer-oriented programme in a medium-size city in Sweden, the present article aims to develop knowledge about how these policies are used to influence employers to hire unemployed workers and how jobs created in this context differ from regular jobs. The article argues that creating jobs through new arrangements for the division of labour, with the promise of relieving regular staff of unskilled tasks, may influence employers’ willingness to hire the unemployed when used alongside other kinds of policy instruments. However, the article also shows that this new division of labour, with programme participants performing mainly unskilled tasks, has been difficult to realize, as new staff gradually come to perform an increasing number of regular working tasks.

Det goda arbetet: En idéhistorisk studie av fackföreningsrörelsen i Sverige 1966–19852021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis paper is a historical study that examines the labor political issues which the movement of Swedish trade unions faced between the years 1966–1985. How did they understand and formulate these problems and what solutions did they present? “The good work” (“Det goda arbetet”) was one such solution which was introduced in 1985 by The Union of Industrial Metalworkers (Metallindustriarbetareförbundet). This thesis explores the underlying ideas and the history behind this visionary program and how it took inspiration from the ideological developments of the previous decades. This is done by analysing four conference reports published in association with yearly union conferences between 1966 and 1985. These reports center around themes of technological development, working conditions, worker power and self determination to name a few.

The analysis focuses on the labor political issues that arose after the establishment of the “Swedish model” and the post-war era economic boom. One of the major ideological developments during the 1960s was the backlash against the fordist model of production and the critique of rationalisation of work in general. This is shown to be one the major shifts in thinking about work which leads towards the development of solutions such as “The good work” during the 1970s and 80s. Furthermore, it is shown how “The good work” was linked historically to alienation theory and sociological research during the period.

The key conclusions from the analysis focus on how worker discontent during the late 1960s led to massive labor political reforms during the 1970s along with the larger project of democratising the workplace gaining new life. This development, however, took a turn in 1976 when the social democratic party lost their first election in nearly 40 years. The analysis of the report by The Union of Industrial Metalworkers from 1985 shows the vision of “The good work” as they formulated it to be stuck between two separate eras. On the one hand it was still in conversation with the left-wing project of advancing labor power and democracy from the 1970s. On the other it had to confront the new political landscape of the 1980s and the right-wing turn towards neoliberalism.
