    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate mental illness among high school students from the perspective of school counselors. The questions asked for this study are how the experiences are examined from the school counselors' perspective, what strategies are used to counteract this phenomenon and what the causes are for mental illness. The method used for this study was to implement interview five school counselor questions concerning the subject of mental illness among young students. The results showed that mental illness has increased during recent years and that supportive talks and lectures are used by school counselors as a strategy to counteract mental illness among young people. According to the school counselors' statements, there are reasons such as stress, the influence of social media, problematic relationships within the family and with friends, love relationships and socio-economic vulnerability. The study also describes the role as school curator and the curator's professional attitude towards students. In conclusion, the results indicate that there is a lack of research in the chosen area, which requires more further research.

Ensamhet bland äldre: En systematisk forskningsöversikt om riskfaktorer bakom upplevelsen av ensamhet2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate which risk factors are behind involuntary loneliness among the elderly and how the risk factors can be counteracted with the help of protective factors. The study was carried out with a systematic research overview where we compiled previous research on the chosen subject area and thematized the work using content analysis. The theories we chose to start from to analyze the results are the activity theory by Lars Tornstam (2005) and the SOC model by Baltes Baltes (1990). The results showed that there were both individual and structural factors that increased the risk of the elderly experiencing existential, social, and emotional loneliness. At the individual level̊, the results showed that physical and mental illness, loss of partner or close friends, and loss of physical and mental abilities can be risk factors for experiencing loneliness. At the societal level, the results showed that low socio-economic status and the feeling of powerlessness can increase the risk of loneliness among the elderly. The results also showed that many of the risk factors can act as protective factors, such as health and structural risk factors, good physical and mental health and high socio-economic status are protective factors against loneliness among the elderly. The risk factors for loneliness among the elderly can be countered if the elderly are allowed to maintain successful aging and an active life adapted to their abilities.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of professionals working with boys and young men suffering from mental illnesses. This has been made possible through semi-structured interviews with five informants who work with social work in various organizations, thus making this a cross-professional study. The results of the study emerged through a thematic analysis where the following main themes were identified: the professional's view of boys and young men's mental illness, the professional's approach and the professional's work. The study's theoretical framework is Connell's theory of masculinity, Goffman's theory of stigma, professional discretion and Gordon's universal, selective and indicated prevention theory. The results of this study show, according to the informants, that there are several barriers that become an obstacle for both the target group and the professionals, such as stigmatization and gender norms. All informants were aware of how gender norms affect the meeting with boys and young men, however the results of the study indicate how the informants approach differs as a result of their own gender. Finally, different contextual conditions are identified that affect conditions in the work and the professional's discretion, such as different opportunities for reflection and different opportunities for health-promoting work.

Den sena ADHD diagnosens betydelse: En studie av mäns självbiografiska berättelser2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to review how men in Sweden who received a late ADHD diagnosis experience their lives with ADHD. The study conducted through a qualitative content analysis of three men's self-biographies. The result showed that life with ADHD for men causes difficulties. The study also showed that ADHD diagnosis could facilitate the situation for the men, but that it still existed difficulties after receiving the ADHD diagnosis. The study showed how much social life and society's view influenced men's experience, feelings, self-esteem, and daily life. However, the study showed that society has norms and expectations which are not adapted for people with ADHD. The study illustrated that it is therefore essential to carry out several studies about how society sees function variations. This can develop better conditions for people with disabilities. Consequently, society can be more adapted to everyone. According to the study, the society can be more adapted to everyone.

Socialtjänstens arbete mot hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck: En kvalitativ studie baserad på intervjuer med socialsekreterare2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate the social service's approach and handling of cases related to honor-related violence and oppression. Furthermore, we wanted to map the boundary the social service makes between honor-related violence and oppression and violence in close relationships.

In order to provide a detailed analysis of the aspects and questions that shall follow, a qualitative thematic analysis method has been used by conducting four semi-structured interviews with social secretaries from a social office in Sweden. The results showed that social secretaries define and manage honor-related violence and oppression in different ways. There is also no clear boundary between the phenomena, however, there are certain factors / motives in the respondents' responses that are of great importance to the social workers when they define honor-related violence and oppression.

Some common underlying factors / motives are the collective or the nuclear family, culture or sexuality. It was also found that respondents often associate problems of honor with people of foreign origin. Another interesting observation worth highlighting was that several of the respondents did not really have any direct action plan or special guidelines to follow. In addition, the interviews showed that the most common intervention is family therapy and thus it is the first intervention offered.

Bilden av äldre i media: En kvalitativ studie över hur äldre personer framställs i media2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Elderly people, meaning people who are 65 years of age or older, is a relatively forgotten group within the media covering. The group is rarely seen within the media, and they rarely get an opportunity to speak their mind. This is mostly visible when questions regarding older people are discussed, since older people will rarely be involved. This study aims to investigate how older people are portrayed in media today. Using the critical discourse analysis, 20 articles from the two biggest daily newspapers in Sweden: Aftonbladet and Expressen will be analyzed. Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis and Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory are used to contribute to increased understanding of how the situation of how discourses regarding older people is presented by the media.

Tillit och psykisk hälsa: En studie om faktorer som påverkar tillit2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Perceptions of death among children in Sweden2019In: International Journal of Children's Spirituality, ISSN 1364-436X, E-ISSN 1469-8455, Vol. 24, no 4, p. 415-433Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article discusses children?s thoughts about death. Research was carried out in two elementary schools in Sweden among 40 children between 6 and 9 years of age, data were collected through text reading, movie viewing and dialogues with children. The main results reveal child-specific thoughts about the end of life, i.e., ideas children construe on their own. The findings also show society- and time-specific thoughts that children take from their societal and cultural context. The article proposes an integrative approach between these two: it is only when the categories of child-specific and society- and time-specific thoughts are combined that we get a fair picture of children?s perceptions of death. The main finding is that children form ideas of their own; they are not completely under the influence of their societal and cultural context. Children take over ideas from their surrounding society but they also express ideas produced by themselves.

Arbetslöshet bland akademiker med utländsk examen: En kvalitativ studie om utländska vuxna akademikers situation på den svenska arbetsmarknaden2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine in which way personnel who work with LVM approach their client’s integrity, autonomy and their participation in decision making. We used a semistructured interview when we interviewed three social workers, one placement secretary and four care personnel who work at institutions for LVM. In the theoretical approach of this study we used the total institutions and the user influence by clients. The study has shown that personnel’s considerations to their client’s integrity, autonomy and participation in decisions are a convoluted problem. Care personnel who work at institutions are the unit that has the best opportunities to consider their client’s desires.  The placement secretary has a certain possibility to consider their clients desires when determining their placement. The unit of personnel that has a significant limitation when it comes to their client’s integrity and autonomy are social workers. Since LVM is a law of constraint it’s causing an insult to the client by losing their autonomy. In this regard it is impossible to consider clients integrity.

Internship as a Mean for Integration. A Critical Study2019In: Journal of International Migration and Integration, ISSN 1488-3473, E-ISSN 1874-6365, Vol. 20, no 2, p. 323-340Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Creating internships for newly arrived refugees and immigrants is a well-established part of the Swedish national integration program and is seen as a strategy to speed up immigrants' establishment process. One common belief is that the workplace is expected to give the newly arrived trainee necessary language training, as well as contextual and cultural knowledge. Here, the transferring direction of knowledge is from the Swedish workplace to the receiving newly arrived trainee. However, it is rarely discussed whether the trainee will bring valuable knowledge to the organization, or what the relational aspects of the internship should look like. In this paper, we develop the analysis of internships as a mean for integration in Sweden, by analyzing what trainees and their supervisors experience in terms of knowledge transfer and development. By interviewing trainees (4) and supervisors (5), the aim of this paper is to discuss ideas and practices in an internship program for refugees that The University of Gothenburg started in 2015. The interviews focus on the structural and organizational level, though individual experiences also play a central role. Theoretically, the analysis is interdisciplinary and a cross-cut between organizational theory and cultural studies, especially the work of Sara Ahmed. Our results show that the trainee is seen both as a resource and as someone who represents multiculturalism, hospitality, and the altruism of the university and its employees. The trainee is expected not only to integrate in a productive way, but also to stand out in non-productive areas, such as the social context.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is twofold: to explore the ways in which the transformation of the Swedish elementary school can be understood through Marxist theory; and, by ethnographic methods, understand the everyday lives of students and teachers in light of the transformation of the educational system. The ethnography has been conducted by observations and interviews during a total of six months at two different schools, Libera and Publica. While Libera is a charter school, owned by a private investment company, Publica is municipally administrated. The former is based in the central part of the city, while the latter is located in a more economically marginal and geographically peripheral area. At Libera, students plan their own schedules and work load and they also set their own goals. At Publica, the students are organized in a more conventional, meaning collective, structure. By discussing marketization, which includes private as well as public actors, scholars foreground the competition that exists between schools through the Swedish voucher-system as well as the transactional relationship that reshapes the relationship between students and teachers. To describe the market rationales by which the public schools must operate the already established concept of New Public Management has been used. However, still no terminology can be found to describe the private actors’ way of functioning. By returning to Marx’s concepts of formal and real subsumption, I offer new ways to conceptualize the shift in character of education and how privately-owned schools operate, meaning how surplus value is created in the everyday life of students and in their pedagogical relations. As my results show, more efficient and flexible ways to organize teaching and pedagogical practices have emerged as new scale logics are developed by private actors who are part of big investment companies. Due to the competition, both Libera and Publica adopt a strong market rationale in their organizational arrangements and pedagogical expectations. Besides conceptualizing schooling on an organizational level, I also seek to address the premises and effects of the learning situation for students in a milieu that is characterized by both flexible and standardized management. Despite the different characteristics of the schools, the market rationales, which dovetailed well with the result-based (state-arranged) management, tended to create alienating conditions for students and teachers in their daily work. Everyday school life was occupied with grade talks and very little time was given for pedagogical “detours”; the students were mostly trying to crack the code and the ones who could not manage the pace were systematically left behind (eliminated). In many cases, whether it was in more successful situations or during processes of (self)elimination, students were often left alone. The expectation of being self-propelled dominated the pedagogical relationship, which translated into the pressure of constant performance and little space to be “unskilled” or explorative. In a situation when school organizations are in competition with each other and are expected to present high numbers (in terms of grades and economic efficiency), the already motivated or skilled students appear as attractive and desirable. The results show how schooling continues to maintain, and in some ways accentuates, segregation and social reproduction.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze how the accusations of domestic violence is taken into account in the court's decision and the social services' assessment in custody disputes. The method used in the study is a critical discourse analysis of six district court judgements as well as corresponding custody investigations compiled by social services in cases where information that the child's father has committed violence against the child's mother has been brought forward. The thesis's theoretical starting points is Fairclough's critical discourse analysis as well as a gender perspective based on norms about gender and parenting. The analysis also takes into account the aspect of power by studying how discretion is used.

The main conclusion of the study is that the district court motivates its judgement based on one of two possible discourses. In the “family discourse”, the court emphasizes the importance of a good and close relationship with both parents and domestic violence becomes side lined, whereas violence and the absence of safety is a central issue in the “women's abuse discourse”. Regardless of the discourses, the district court has the right to choose whether or not to follow the assessment supplied by social services.

Association of Child Placement in Out-of-Home Care With Trajectories of Hospitalization Because of Suicide Attempts From Early to Late Adulthood2020In: JAMA Network Open, E-ISSN 2574-3805, Vol. 3, no 6, article id e206639Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Importance: Children placed in out-of-home care (OHC) have higher rates of suicidal behaviors, including suicide attempts, compared with those who grow up in their family of origin. Several studies have shown that this elevated risk persists into young adulthood. Yet, our knowledge about any longer-term associations of OHC with suicide attempts is limited.

Objective: To examine how childhood experiences of placement in OHC are associated with trajectories of hospitalization because of suicide attempts (HSA) from early into late adulthood.

Design, Setting, and Participants: This prospective birth cohort study that was conducted in Stockholm, Sweden, and analyzed in March 2020 included 14 559 individuals born in 1953 who were living in the greater metropolitan of Stockholm in November 1963 and followed through registers up until December 2016.

Exposures: Childhood experiences of OHC based on information from the Social Register (age 0-19 years).

Main Outcomes and Measures: Hospitalization because of suicide attempts based on in-patient care data from the National Patient Register. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to cluster individuals according to their probabilities of HSA across adulthood (age 20-63 years).

Results: In this cohort of 14 559 individuals (7146 women [49.1%]), 1320 individuals (9.1%) had childhood experiences of OHC, whereas 525 individuals ( 3.6%) had HSA. A Cox regression analysis showed a substantially higher risk of HSA among those with childhood experiences of OHC (hazard ratio, 3.58; 95% CI, 2.93-4.36) and after adjusting for a range of adverse childhood living conditions (hazard ratio, 2.51; 95% CI, 2.00-3.15). Those with at least 1 HSA were grouped into 4 trajectories: (1) peak in middle adulthood (66 [12.6%]), (2) stable low across adulthood (167 [31.8%]), (3) peak in early adulthood (210 [40.0%]), and (4) peak in emerging adulthood (82 [15.6%]). A multinomial regression analysis suggested that those with experiences of OHC had higher risks of following any of these trajectories (trajectory 1: relative risk ratio [RRR], 2.91; 95% CI, 1.61-5.26; trajectory 2: RRR, 3.18; 95% CI, 2.21-4.59; trajectory 3: RRR, 4.32; 95% CI, 3.18-5.86; trajectory 4: RRR, 3.26; 95% CI, 1.94-5.46). The estimates were reduced after adjusting for adverse childhood living conditions.

Conclusions and Relevance: The findings suggest that the elevated risk of suicide attempts among former child welfare clients does not cease after young adulthood, indicating the necessity for clinical attention to childhood experiences of OHC as a risk marker for suicidal behavior across the life span.

"SiS är inte en bra plats för barn att vara på": En kvalitativ studie om upplevelser av SiS särskilda ungdomshem2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

"SiS is not a good place for children" is a qualitative study aimed at investigating institutional care and the treatment work that takes place with criminal and convicted youth in Sweden. The study is focused on investigating the importance of the treatment work at the institutions and what impact it has for the target group. The study also examines how the target group is being prepared to return to society with the aim of minimizing recidivism in crime. The empirical material is based on three semi-structured interviews with previously institutionalized youth and three support workers. The study is based on Goffman's research on total institutions and Travis Hirschi's theory on social bonds. The study's general results and conclusions show that there is a rough jargon, destructive adaptation behaviors and a specific social culture at the institution, that can make treatment difficult. Strong external factors in the youth’s environment may be a reason why the youth has developed a social disruptive behavior and these factors are not taken into account in the treatment, which indicates the difficulties in dealing with the complex problem of juvenile delinquency.

Unga kvinnors kroppsuppfattning i en digitaliserad värld: En kunskapsöversikt2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Due to the increasing digitalisation in society, social media has become a huge part of people’s everyday lives. Being exposed to the prevailing body ideal is easier today than ever, which is especially considered to affect young women and their relationship to their bodies. The purpose of this literature study was to, through a compilation of previous research on the subject, shed a light on how the body ideal on social media is portrayed for young women and furthermore how it affected their body perception, in order to identify protective factors that counteract this. The results indicated that editing photos, publishing selfies and a social comparison with others contributed to a greater body dissatisfaction in the quest to reach an often unrealistic thinideal. According to young women, an awareness of the reality behind the perfect surface was a major contribution to obtaining a positive body image. Disseminating knowledge about the subject through education was thus considered to be beneficial in order to describe the problems that the body ideal on social media entailed in young women’s everyday lives.

Cannabisdiskurser i svensk press: En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av förändringen mellan 2012 och 20202021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

While the western world is in the midst of a liberalisation trend where laws concerning cannabis are frequently changed in favour of a more permissive stance, the characteristic Swedish objective for “a drug-free society” remains. Based on five different cannabis discourses in Swedish press, which have been identified in previous research, this paper uses a quantitative content analysis to examine how often these discourses appear, and the scope they are given, in four of Sweden’s largest newspapers. This was done with the purpose of finding out if there has been a change in the way media portrays cannabis in 2012 compared to 2020. Social constructionism has been used as a theoretical framework, and 120 articles for each year have been encoded and analysed using discourse- and agenda-setting theory. The results show that the legal discourse continues to be dominant, that the medical discourse has become more nuanced, and that the financial and recreational discourse have been given more room in the media. Furthermore they show that the discourse regarding social problems has conspicuously decreased. Based on the international trends, the key role of the media as an actor for social change, and tendencies among the population, it is suggested in the discussion of the results that research in this area continues. Additionally, an ongoing discussion regarding the role of social work as it pertains to societal development is encouraged.

Socialarbetarens arbete med nyanlända kvinnor: En kvalitativ studie om nyanlända kvinnors etablering på den svenska arbetsmarknaden2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Avidentifierade jobbansökningar: En kvalitativ studie om avidentifierade jobbansökningars betydelse för rekryteringsprocessens utfall2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Anonymous job applications are a relatively new method that has gained space in the Swedish labor market and the research field in recent years. Research shows that personal attributes are often crucial for who gets called to a job interview. Therefore, this study refers to examine how recruiters evaluate and use this approach and demonstrates the importance that anonymity has to the outcome of the recruitment process. The study is based on a hermeneutic perspective with a qualitative approach and was conducted using a comparative study design, with analysis based on several case studies. The empirical material consists of five semi-structured interviews, which together creates two cases within the IT and consulting industry.During the analysis, a theoretical framework has been presented which consists of the labelling theory and the analytical concepts of homosociality and etnosociality. These three are used to increase the understanding of how a sorting method based only on formal criteria, training and work experience, is used in practice. This has led an employer to focus on individual competency instead of ethnic background, gender or age. However, a problem remains in the industry where age is a determining factor and ethnicity is linked to Swedish language skills. Difficulties also arise when customer influence plays a large role in the recruitment process and this creates a framework of what is expected of every employee. This enables consultants to be adapted depending on the criteria that are necessary for the specific company. It is not only vital what recruiters or employers value but also what the clients wants and expect of the consultants.

Förmågodeprivation bland funktionsnedsatta människor: när lagen inte räcker till2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how individuals with disabilities construct their capability deprivation in relation to the opportunities for development created by structural and personal factors. Capability deprivation means that people perceive a lack of freedoms and rights to use their talents to achieve their personal goals. These goals may be of economic, social and cultural nature and may involve the development of the individual that he or she values high. When capability deprivation occurs it is equated with poverty. This paper has a theoretically orientation since is based on the Capability approach which is a framework that is used, among other things, to assess the individual's opportunity for development. The previous researches cited in this paper have as their main focus the capabilities of the individual in relation to their environment, which is considered relevant to the study area. An analytical model to interpret the empirical data has been developed with the help of the theoretical framework and previous research. This analytical model takes into account the structural, social and individual factors which have been divided into micro, medium and macro level. These in its turn form the information base for analyzing the collected material and can tell us whether people with disabilities experience deprivation of their capabilities in the different levels. Empirical data were collected using qualitative methods like interviews with people with physical disabilities living in Stockholm. The results suggest that the target grupp can experience capability deprivation mainly due to structural and social factors that account for midel- and macro-level, which in its turn affects people with disabilitiesalso in the micro-level.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to explore how unaccompanied minors describe their experiences of family reunification, and what importance or implications it has for them. Furthermore, our aim was to find out how they experience the withdrawal of public social support after the arrival of their families. We interviewed three persons who were unaccompanied minors by the arrival to Sweden, and later reunified with their families in Sweden. The theoretical framework of this qualitative interview study is formed by Schütz’ phenomenological sociology and Berger and Luckmann’s theory of the social construction of reality. We complemented the theoretical framework with Boss’ theory of ambiguous loss and Greif’s theory of ambiguous reunification. The method for analysis used is Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The main results shown in this study is that there seems to be an ambiguity in the family reunification experience. On one hand, the family reunification was of big importance to the participants. On the other hand, the time following the reunification was characterized by a great responsibility for the family. Finally, we discuss possible shortcomings in the way the public social support for families after family reunification is provided.

A Scoping Review of Outcomes Measured and Involvement of People With Intellectual Disabilities in Active Support Research2024In: JARID: Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities, ISSN 1360-2322, E-ISSN 1468-3148, Vol. 37, no 6, article id e13309Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background:  Active Support is a staff practice that aims to increase engagement of people with intellectual disabilities. This study seeks to: (1) identify the outcomes of staff using Active Support and how these are measured; (2) identify how the views of people with intellectual disabilities have been included in Active Support research.

Method:  A scoping review was conducted of peer-reviewed articles about Active Support published between 2009 and 2023.

Results:  Sixteen articles were identified. Outcomes included engagement, the quality of staff support, choice and challenging behaviour. Structured observations were the most frequently used measurement method. Only two studies explored people with intellectual disabilities' perspectives about Active Support.

Conclusions:  Consistent use of similar measures is a strength of Active Support research. Including perspectives of people with intellectual disabilities may provide insight into dimensions of support not been measured and assist in further developing these measures and Active Support practice.

Active support as good support in group homes? A longitudinal interview study with service users2024In: Journal of Intellectual & Developmental Disability, ISSN 1366-8250, E-ISSN 1469-9532, p. 1-12Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Support from staff plays an important role in quality of life for people with intellectual disability. This study focuses on service users' views of Active Support as good support and whether Active Support increases the quality of everyday support in group homes.

Method: Nine service users were interviewed at baseline and at follow-up one year after staff received Active Support training. Thematic analyses were used to develop themes. Results: Three main themes were created: (1) Home is more than just a place, it is a feeling; (2) Good care is caring with accessible communication; and (3) Time is precious. Participants were more satisfied with most of the support at follow-up, particularly choice-making, control in everyday life, relationships, and emotional support.

Conclusions: Active Support corresponds well with service users’ perceptions of good support. In future studies of Active Support service users' voices should be a part of the follow-up.

    Abstract [en]

Working as a teacher in leisure time activities is a complex assignment. There are concepts that are multifaceted and difficult to concretize in the world of school. In this study, we describe how leisure time pedagogues work and plan an activity where pupils are to be given meaningful leisure time. For pupils to feel this they need to be included, involved and given influence. This is something that has proven to be not entirely easy to practice in leisure time activities. We have collected data and information using focus group interviews for both the pupils and the teachers at two schools in Stockholm. The pupils have had their voices heard in how they experience leisure time activities. We have also investigated how the pedagogues approached a children's perspective in planning the pupils leisure time activities. The results show that these are important concepts to understand but are difficult to practice and implement in leisure time activities.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish welfare society can be advocated as a social safety net with the intention of giving citizens fair living conditions. However, the welfare system has recently undergone fundamental changes regarding its organization and steering within the social image work, where its impact is considered to have received far too little attention.

The overall purpose of the study is to study social workers 'experiences of steering within the social services' exercise of authority. The empirical data has been considered in qualitative interviews and has brought significant knowledge and information about the subject area. The results have shown an overall control within the social authority work, which normalizes and constitutes an impact on how the practical work is conducted and how the feeling of the social work is treated. However, the results of the study have shown various causal explanations that are rooted in trust from the management team, work motives and also the social worker's individual professional experience and competence.

Based on the study's analysis, four central themes have been identified and presented as both causal explanations and prerequisites for practical social authority work. These are explained as; steering and the social secretary's work situation, trust-based governance, social work - a knowledge-based practice and steering as instruments.

    Abstract [en]

The overall purpose of the study was to study and elucidate the phenomenon of discrimination in relation to individuals who have a visible disability. The main empiricism has been based on qualitative interviews and completed influential knowledge. The main result of this has been exposed to be an context-based discrimination, in the form of social structures and physically mismatched public environments. Discrimination has been shown to be a common occurrence and expresses unequal conditions, in the form of inclusion in social situations. However, have the results shown general causal explanations of this problem - which are based on lack of knowledge, and in turn, constitute negative conceptions. The study thus draws attention to people with visible disabilities, in the sense of becoming more naturally included in society. Through the study analysis four themes where identified; lack of inclusion, interpersonal interactions, negative events and lack of knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

The media plays a major role in today's society. What we do not experience ourselves, we can be told through the media. Seen from this, the purpose of this study is to investigate how immigrants are described in news articles in Swedish morning and evening newspapers during the period 2016-2021, with focus on the negative aspects. We will focus on answering which specific characteristics the term immigrant is associated with and in which perspectives it is written about immigrants. The study is based on a qualitative text analysis and the empirical material we have collected thus consists of 24 news articles. The articles were analyzed using post colonial theory, the dichotomy We and the Others and stereotypes. The results show that Swedish morning and evening newspapers describe immigrants in more negative than positive terms. There is also a continuous description of characteristics in the form of stereotypes. Newspapers portray, so to speak, an image of immigrants as different, deviant and foreign. At the same time, the results show that there is a marked difference between immigrants and Swedes as immigrants stand in sharp contrast to the so-called "Swedishness". The conclusions we can draw from the results is that the media differentiate between immigrants and ethnic Swedes with the help of different characteristics and perspectives to describe immigrants.

Competence and professionalisation among return-to-work coordinators in Sweden: comparisons by original profession2024In: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664, Vol. 27, no 5, p. 938-951Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Return-to-work coordinators (RTWC) support people on sickness absence and is a new healthcare occupation in Sweden. Its practitioners represent a variety of professions, there is no common undergraduate training and vague role and competence descriptions. The aim was to explore differences in training and competence according to original professions (occupational therapists, physiotherapists, counselling, and other professions) and coordinators’ views on which professions they believe provide the best competence for the role. All RTWCs (82) in one region were invited to answer a questionnaire (89% response rate). Mixed-methods analyses were applied. The results showed that counselling professions were more likely than other professional groups to have further training, particularly in conversation methods, and a lower proportion of them stated needing more knowledge about gender equality, social problems, insurance/benefit and conversation methods. The analysis of free-text answers identified three competence areas of importance: advice and guidance, a holistic view, and personality over profession. Occupational therapists and social workers were seen as having the best competence for the coordinating role. The results outline some common values, norms and important competences for RTWCs that could help develop the RTW coordination training and pave the way for RTWCs professionalisation process.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to deepen the knowledge about women's experiences with the use of social media, and what effects social media has on women's experiences of their body perception, self-esteem and mental health. This is done by conducting a total of six interviews with six people aged 17-30, where all participants identify as women. The interviews are analyzed through a qualitative content analysis. Based on the results, seven overarching themes are identified: women's use of social media, the portrayal of the body ideal, women's personal experiences in connection with body perception, women's personal experiences in connection with self-esteem, society's influence, positive aspects and protective strategies and behaviors. This study includes these theoretical perspectives: feminist practice, male gaze, objectification theory, sociocultural theory and the gender system. The results of the study show that the women who were interviewed have mixed feelings and thoughts about social media, where some have more negative experiences about social media, while others have been inspired by social media. A common image that the women have expressed is that they feel that they are more vulnerable to ideas about what the body should look like and body ideals on social media at an early age.

"Dom kallar oss invandrare!": En undersökning som bygger på hur ungdomar av "andra generationens invandrare" identifierar sig själva.2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This investigation is aimed to analyze and gain insight into how young people of the "second generation immigrants" identify themselves in a society where they are seen as immigrants of the environment in view of the name. Also, how they identify themselves during trips to their home/country of origin are of relevance to see if they are affected in their own identification, depending on how they believe they are seen from the outside.

Through a survey, the statistics were produced, which serves as a preliminary to the larger part of the investigation where six individuals were interviewed in order to give deeper answers to the questions sought. The answers that emerged were then analyzed in relation to selected theories.

In connection with the investigation it has emerged that the young people in question often identify themselves in such a way that they think that the surroundings look at them. It is in relation to how others see them as they see themselves, which creates a distance between the surroundings and themselves. With increased knowledge on both sides, this distance between the environment and the young people in this investigation maybe could reduce.

Delaktiggörande med hjälp av kommunikativt och kognitivt stöd: en mixed methods studie om kunskapsutvecklingsbehov hos handläggare med direkt funktionsnedsättningsansvar2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Participation is a human right. By being able to communicate one’s needs, society is made more accessible, which is a prerequisite for participation. Communicative and cognitive support are necessary tools in facilitating communication for people with disabilities. Nevertheless, the National Board of Health and Welfare's recommendations on desirable knowledge among disability assistance officers are followed selectively. Based on observations made during work-based learning (WBL) period, the aim of this study had been to examine disability assistance officers’ individual responsibility for their own continuous learning. To achieve the research aim, social justice design with exploratory sequential mixed methods design as a basis was used. Qualitative data collected during phase 1 (WBL period) were integrated into a survey (phase 2) which was then used for data collection during the third, quantitative, phase to explore whether selected observations from phase 1 could be generalized. A pedagogical objective within the framework of social justice was to raise awareness among assistance officers that being able to offer cognitive support did not necessarily require special education, and thus to promote participation of people with disabilities. Results confirmed observations made during phase 1 that not all shortcomings could be reduced to organization. The reality was multifaceted and assistance officers’ discretion was limited to varying degrees. A lot of informal learning took place in working groups, but great responsibility for one’s own knowledge development was placed on the employer.
