En utvärdering av synthesizern OP-1 utifrån ett användbarhetsperspektiv2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report is based on results given from usability testing of the synthesizer OP-1 developed by the company Teenage Engineering. The study has involved potential end users during the development process and aims only to look at the first experience the user gets from the interaction with the synthesizer. The meaning of the usability tests is to find out how the user can understand how to use OP-1, how intuitive the different modes are and how this affects the initial user experience.

Nine people, out of a total amount of fourteen asked, participated in these usability tests. The selection of participants is based on their previous knowledge and experience of synthesizers. The theoretical frame of reference includes Jonas Löwgren and Erik Stoltermans theories of use qualities and are combined with chosen parts of Donald Normans ” Seven Stages of Actions as Design Aids”.

The shown results indicate that the users quickly understand how to use the basic modes and features of the synthesizer. All of the participated users think OP-1 is entertaining, finds the design of OP-1 attractive and appriciates its portability, in which they see potential for both travelling and live performances. The users do not always fully understand the graphical elements but reckon that it is not always necessary to, neither in the display, nor on the buttons, since this clearifies after further usage. The users show some difficulties interacting with functions such as the pattern sequencer and some editing in tape mode. The users also sometimes show difficulties determining which mode the synthesizer is in.

All of the usability tests were performed on a pre beta version of the OP-1. The final version of the synthesizer has been updated with changes influenced by the results of this report.

Utmaningar och möjligheter med digital transformation: En fallstudie om hur en detaljhandelsorganisation kan arbeta med marknadsföring i digitala kanaler2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digital transformation has led to increased use of digital technologies, this creates changes in society that can require companies to adapt new strategies to remain competitive. With a qualitative approach in the form of a case study, this essay examines how a company in the retail trade can manage, and is structured for digital transformation in marketing, and what opportunities and challenges this management and structuring has brought about current marketing in digital channels. Data collection took place via semi-structured interviews with various managers and an employee within the retail organization.

The results show how the organization uses digital marketing in social media and customer-specific marketing in E-mail. For this, a new role has been created that bears the responsibility for the process. Digital marketing mainly creates opportunities for relationship building with customers, efficiency, flexibility and personalized marketing. Challenges have mainly arisen regarding increased competition, digital development in society, the spread of incidents and the fact that the retail industry in Sweden is lagging behind in development.

Furthermore, the study identified similarities and differences in how the retail organization works with marketing in social media as well as customer-specific marketing and that this affects the organization’s management and structure. For example, two different information systems were identified where both processes, systems and participants differed for digital marketing in social media and customer-specific marketing. The study also revealed that the biggest similarities were that both types of digital marketing were effective approaches to reach customers and both alternatives applied the same sources of information for creating and sharing materials.

Digital transformation och dess påverkan inom den offentliga sektorn: En kommunal förvaltnings möjligheter och hinder utifrån digital transformation2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The phenomenon of digital transformation permeates all aspects of society and brings about constant change, which presents obstacles but also creates opportunities. Digital transformation has mainly been described in terms linked to the organizational level in the private sector, which raises the question of how it is manifested in the public sector. This paper studies digital transformation from the perspective of a municipal administration that has embraced the opportunities for value creation offered by digital transformation and works from the perspective of digital transformation to address current social challenges in the society. The administration's IT-reliant work system is mapped and analyzed to identify the opportunities and obstacles presented by digital transformation, as well as the elements within the organization that are affected by the digital transformation-shaped environment. The study has identified that digital transformation is slowed down by legal and economic aspects in the specific context, which means that digital transformation does not pose an existential threat, but that the opportunities remain for organizations. However, the study shows that a combination of competencies, particularly digital competence, and a clarity in: goals, processes and information flows are needed to capitalize on the opportunities presented by digital transformation. In order to achieve the clarity required for an effective IT-reliant work system, the study has identified that traditional business process management thinking, process logic, infrastructure logic, agent logic, provide a sufficient foundation for streamlining processes in the public sector in the context of digital transformation. Finally, the study shows that digital competency is the key to managing the effects of digital transformation in the various elements that make up the administration's IT-reliant work system.

Challenges in designing virtual environments training social skills for children with autism2006In: International Journal on Disability and Human Development, ISSN 1565-012X, Vol. 5, no 2, p. 105-111Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to explore particular challenges faced when designing virtual environments for children with autism, with the purpose of training social skills. Our findings are based on studying autistic behavior during three years (primary and secondary sources), analysis of related system and other computer mediated assistive technology, as well as general game design. From these studies, we have identified eight critical design parameters that must be adjustable in a system suitable for autistic persons. The importance of the parameters, their variation range, as well as the need for independent adjustment of these were estimated and verified by experienced expert pedagogues. Abstract [en]

Digital transformation has become central to many organizations for survival and is seen as a chance to modernize the business. A digital transformation process can affect business processes and the value of services or products. Therefore it is relevant to understand how IT-reliant worksystems within a business are affected and what this means for the participants. Previous research shows that organizations carry out digital transformation to gain competitive advantages and meet the challenges and opportunities that digital technology brings in industry and society. The aim of the research is to increase the understanding of how an IT-reliant worksystem is affected by drivers for a digital transformation process, which objectives have been designed and which success factors have been used. This is done by examining theories that have mapped digital transformation and related fields, then comparing these theoretical findings with the chosen case. This study has chosen a qualitative case study of a mortgage loan process within a bank that is going through digital transformation that gives the research a deeper understanding within a specific process and the social environment. The theories are generalized for several types of businesses that can be identified within this case, but there are more areas that have been shown to be more relevant.

The study has identified that changed customer behavior and an increasing competitive environment have driven the business to change. The goal of this change has been to simplify services and increase customer satisfaction with the help of digital technology. When this development was carried out, success factors were found. The most prevalent for the case was demonstrated as an agile supportive organizational culture. There has been less impact on the participants' role during the change. Instead digital technology has a relevance to the business processes to offer the service. Business processes have changed to offer the service digitally for customers. At the same time, the work for administrators has been supported with more automated tasks and an increase in digitally customer self-service.

    Abstract [en]

Digitalisation has affected society in many ways, companies and consumers are no exception. E-commerce is in a strong growth phase and one can also see how different industries are taking their place in the new digital market. The beauty industry is one of those industries that has grown in the recent years in the field of e-commerce. In line with this, it is of interest to examine why consumers choose to shop for beauty products online. This qualitative study has studied how women between 25-40 years of age choose to buy beauty products and how factors such as convenience, price and information are crucial when buying. The study examines traditional consumer behaviour compared to the new digital consumer and how digitalisation affects how consumers buy beauty products. Through digital tools such as mobile phones, digitalisation has contributed to a changed consumption pattern where digital tools such as social media and influences have begun to take place. The aim of the study is to understand the factors that are important when purchasing beauty products online to contribute to knowledge for companies in the competing new digital market.

Journalsystemet TakeCare: En studie av funktioner utifrån ett informationssäkerhets- och användarperspektiv2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Since the introduction of computerized health record systems and unified record-keeping, the health care management of patient information has been criticized. There are divided opinions about whether or not the users or the systems that is imperfect.

The survey aims to inspect selected features of the health record system TakeCare developed to maintain patient and information security. By comparing the functions to information security requirements established by Socialstyrelsen, the paper aims to find where the noted problems can arise. By asking users about their view, we intend to find an understanding for whether the problems occur in the technical functions or in the use of the system.

Used methods are e-mail interviews and a study visit to Stockholm County Council's department for IT in form of an interview and presentation of TakeCare. We have observed that there are functions that take information security requirements into account and that the users believe they can manage the system, but nevertheless health care’s way of handling information is criticized. Based on our study, we believe that the problem occurs when an unauthorized person makes the decision to take part of information, which is not a result of the system's shortcomings. We believe that health care professionals are responsible for the patient’s safety, whether it's usage of the system or care of the patient.

Dyslektiska studenters situation vid påtvingad distansundervisning under Covid-19: En fallstudie om hanteringen av distansundervisning för dyslektiska studenter under Covid-19 pandemin2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Covid-19 meant a rapid transition from physical classroom teaching to digital e-learning at a distance and this could meandifficulties for university students with dyslexia. The purpose of the essay was to therefore to shed light on the situation for dyslexic students based on the experiences teachers, students coordinators and students with dyslexia had with the transition from classroom teaching to compulsory e-learning at a distance in connection with Covid-19. This was done in terms of work systems and its technical infrastructure, surroundings and digital reading strategies for knowledge acquisition. Based on semi-structured interviews with five dyslexic students, two teachers and a study coordinator at Södertörn University, the results were thematized in relation to DeLone and McLean's (2003) IS success model and Alter's (2015) work system theory. The results showed that the dyslexic students felt that the work system had the functions needed to be able to complete their distance studies, but that the teachers could have used more functions and had higher digital competence.Furthermore, the transition to e-learning was initially experienced as uncertain, circumstantial and messy, but over time it was stabilized through fixed routines, structure, well-functioning study environment with own workspace outside the home. The result also showed that the teachers initially experienced technical challenges and this led to insufficient benefit, efficiency and satisfaction through the e-learning platforms. However, the students and teachers gradually came to experience increased benefits with e-learning. The students' coordinators felt the need for increased coordination between students, teachers and external specialists. The conclusion was that the participants could gradually meet the knowledge requirements via e-learning by creating fixed routines that enabled effective teaching and feedback during fixed times. Another conclusion was that students with dyslexiacould compensate for their reading and writing difficulties through discipline in everyday life and effective study routines. In conclusion, it appeared that the study coordinator was able to quickly inform students and teachers for increased coordination between all participants.

    Abstract [en]

This is a case study whose purpose is to contribute with knowledge about the factors that affect the work of supporting education at a higher education institution, in relation to digital transformation, in crises such as the COVID-19-pandemic. The study also contributes with an understanding of related concepts that are related to digital transformation in similar crises. To fulfill this purpose, a selected work system at a higher education institution has been studied through semi-structured interviews with a sample of respondents. The studied work system has been selected to get an overview of the roles within the work system, as well as to find out how this work system relates to concepts related to digital transformation in the COVID-19-pandemic. The results shows that the concepts of ambidexterity, agility, digital resilience, and digital transformation are related, and that these concepts are factors that influence the work of supporting education in crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Other important factors that are linked to these concepts and are considered to have an impact are syllabi, evaluations, IT skills, innovation ability and digital tools. These conclusions are based on experiences and opinions by the represented roles from the chosen work system.

Social Infrastructures as Barriers and Foundation for Informal Learning: Technology Integration in an Urban After-School Center2012In: Computer Supported Cooperative Work: The Journal of Collaborative Computing and Work Practices, ISSN 0925-9724, E-ISSN 1573-7551, Vol. 21, no 1, p. 81-103Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we explore the relationship between social learning environments and the technological ecologies that practitioners, learners, and researchers develop to sustain them. Through an examination of ethnographic research conducted at an urban after- school learning program we show how social, technological and power infrastructures influence learning and interaction in this setting. Adopting a holistic approach we examine how technologies are integrated into activities in this program to support the learning of the after-school youth. We emphasize both positive and negative infrastructures that contribute to the learning environment and discuss how identifying these infrastructures are one of the first steps towards understanding and informing technology design in informal learning settings.

Fildelning bortom rätt och fel: en studie om fildelning och filbytare2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This undergraduate thesis discusses how a new type of workforce management system successfully can be developed from a socio-technical perspective for businesses in the home care service to adopt and benefit from the tool. To answer the question “How can companies that develop high-tech workforce management systems (WFM-systems) towards the home care sector use The technology adoption life cycle for the tool to go from innovation to industry standard?”. A qualitative method is used in the form of a case study. To collect the empirical material, semi-structured interviews were conducted with respondents from three different Swedish home companies services and a company that is developing a high-tech WFM-system for the home care sector. The substrate for the theory is based on how companies that develop high-tech WFM-systems can be inspired by The technology adoption life cycle to increase their competitiveness and avoid collapse due to the gaps that exist between different market segments and their varying needs.

Through analyzes of the collected empirical data, the authors of this thesis have concluded that the home care sector is facing a digital transformation where the implementation of high-tech WFM-systems is considered necessary. The reason behind this is that high-tech tools that use advanced algorithms for scheduling can improve resource management, while reducing costs and travel times. In order for the implementation to achieve the desired effect, these tools need to be developed in accordance with a socio-technical perspective where both home care businesses and technically able developers work together to create tools that have a positive impact on the future of the industry.

Gränssnittsdesign: kvalitativ och kvantitativ utvärdering av FöreningsSparbankens hemsida2003Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The increased spread of digital technology and smart services has changed the way employees work in retail in a variety of ways. It has therefore changed the collaboration of actors, which has brought opportunities and challenges for employees and businesses. Varying needs of actors influence the business's decision to apply smart services in physical stores. The purpose of this qualitative study is to study IT-dependent work systems in the retail trade, which examines employees’ varied perceptions of the impact of smart services on work forms. There are complexities in collaboration between actors as well as resources and systems that can affect employees’. Method choices have been made in the form of in-depth interviews to collect deeper insights and perspectives on employees’ perceptions of how work forms are affected by smart services. A selection of respondents has been made in consideration of the socio-technical perspective, which includes work roles where employees’ interact with digital technology. In-depth interviews have been conducted with six respondents from varied operations within the retail trade. The data collection has been based on in-depth interviews where a deductive conceptual framework has been created to increase understanding and gain deeper insights into the subject. The conclusion of the study shows that smart services change the way employees’ work through increased efficiency and reduced workload. The impact of smart services also shows that the availability of information and customer interactions is changing. It also includes adaptations by employees’ when applying smart services that require increased knowledge as it affects the performance of work methods. A further part of the conclusion shows that smart services have a positive and negative effect on employees’ working methods in the retail trade

Perspectives on digital divide: Internet usage and attitudes in Arusha, Tanzania, a minor field study2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper outlines the current situation of Internet usage and attitudes towards the Internet among ordinary people in Arusha, Tanzania, and examines the views of ordinary citizens on the effects of the arrival of Internet and the possible digital divide.

Using qualitative interviews with equal groups of ordinary Internet users and ordinary non- Internet users in Arusha, the authors found varying levels of awareness about Internet services and facilities and their availability. There was also a widespread concern about immoral western influences communicated by the Internet and how it may affect the domestic culture. It was clearly shown that Internet usage and the possibility to utilize the information found is dependent on education levels and the economic situation of the users, two closely related factors. To get additional views on the subject interviews were also carried out with representatives for Radio and TV stations as well as newspapers located in Arusha, institutions for higher education in the ICT field, Internet providers, and Arusha Municipal Council. To examine the actual Internet usage we extracted random samples of visited websites in several of the Internet cafés, which most of the Arushans use to access the Internet.

It was found that government action is necessary that the in order to bridge the digital divide, but as a result of systematic censorship of media government efforts meet a profound distrust among people, neither does the government consider this to be any of their responsibilities.

SMS i TV: ett sätt att skapa interaktion i TV?2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this essay is to examine the phenomenon SMS in TV. Partly by identify the communication process behind the phenomenon and partly by describing it in a editorial and technical point of view. We have analysed the communication process regarding scientific theories in communication, interaction and convergence. With a qualitive approach we have fulfilled four interviews and two small ethnographical field observations. Objects for the interviews and observations have been two Swedish produced debate-programs, broadcasted in TV; Diskus in TV4 and Debatt in SVT2. Our conclusions shows that the phenomenon SMS in TV provides the traditional one-way communicative medium TV a new opportunity to create a feedback-channel between the TV-viewer and the TV-producer. The main purpose with SMS in TV from a TV-producers point of view is to let the TV-viewer have the possibility to send a SMS-message with his or her thoughts or questions to the TV-producer and by that affect the TV-program. Our conclusions also describes how the phenomenon is used in a editorial way and how it’s produced and used in a technical point of view. Further discussions are made regarding problems connected to the phenomenon and it’s future possibilities.

    Abstract [en]

Digital platforms in healthcare have become an increasingly implemented tool to facilitate and streamline daily care work in hospitals and health centers. In parallel with the new digitized era, this digital transformation has had a major impact on individuals' ways of working in healthcare. It is thus significant that digital competence is prioritized to achieve the intended goals regarding streamlining patient management. The qualitative study sheds light on how digi-physical care affects everyday care work and the patient journey. The study also intends to conclude how digital care platforms affect everyday care work, what advantages and disadvantages can be distinguished. The main purpose of the study is to investigate how digital platforms can be implemented to streamline healthcare and thereby investigate such care platforms from an informatics perspective. The research question refers to, how digital platforms can be applied to streamline patient management, is framed from a supplier perspective of such care platforms.

The methodology includes an online survey with 10 questions that 11 respondents answered. The survey is supplemented with three in-depth interviews. These in-depth interviews are conducted via the digital tool Microsoft Teams. These respondents are carefully selected to generate relevant first-hand information about the research topic. Based on the respondents' answers, it can be stated that all respondents considered that there are many positive advantages of using digital platforms in healthcare. These positive effects are achieved by implementing digital platforms in a well-thought-out and structured way. Respondents also then pointed out that care providers must be given the right conditions to adequately use the digital care platforms as part of their works. The extensive criticism that digital care providers have received has been encountered in the study. The main criticism is then that digital care providers more easily prioritize more manageable matters such as easier physical ailments especially for patients with higher socioeconomic status. Based on the survey, the importance of implementing digital care platforms from an equal opportunity perspective is emphasized. In the future, digital platforms need to be implemented and developed with the common goal of increasing accessibility for patients and offering more patient-centered healthcare.

On demandradio, nya lyssnarmönster: En c-uppsats om radio när man vill2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is to study if new radio listening patterns have been created since Swedish public radio Sveriges Radio (SR) began offering radio repeats on demand via its website.

Communication theories written by John Fiske have been used and theories by Walter Benjamin concerning how things change when reproduced. Marshall McLuhan and Tony Schwartz historic theories have also been utilized.

The method used has been divided into three sections, where a comparison has been made between various secondary data from SR, Radioundersökningar AB (RUAB), the Nordic Information Center for Media and Communication Research (NORDICOM), the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Radio Joint Audience Research Limited (RAJAR). Quantitative data was collected via a questionnaire that was published on the SR website and through emailing the questionnaire to a reference group. The authors have carried out 35-45 minute telephone interviews which were recorded and partly transcribed to collect more qualitative data.

Results from the questionnaires and interviews suggest that listeners to on demand radio services use a new, more active way of listening to the radio. People listen to on demand radio when they have time, listen when they have missed something in a programme, or choose to listen to a programme again.

It is however difficult to see if the time for listening has changed, but the time for listening to radio programmes that require more concentration seems to have moved to evenings, and when listeners have an available “window” for concentrated on demand radio listening. It is nevertheless clear from the BBC figures and the growth in on demand radio listening at the BBC that this growth is also likely to take place in Sweden once the public becomes more aware of the availability of this service.

Digital Transformation: Understanding Business Goals, Risks, Processes, and Decisions2023Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Whilst digitisation is far from a new concept, many assume that simply introducing automation and information systems in various forms will be enough to make their organisation’s operations more efficient. This misconception can often lead to disarray and costly mistakes. Digital Transformation: Understanding Business Goals, Risks, Processes, and Decisions shows how to avoid such issues via careful consideration of what an enterprise really needs.

Unlike many other books on digital transformation, the authors do not dwell on database design or the details of implementing information systems. Instead, they emphasise the importance of a clear understanding of all aspects of an organisation in order to effectively implement and manage digital systems, from business goals and strategies to structuring information and making decisions, risk assessments, project management, organising, and procuring services and products.

Organised in eleven chapters, and drawing on examples from all over the world, this book will be of interest to university students of business administration, management, information systems, and computer science, as well as practitioners seeking to better understand how to handle digital transformation in their own organisation.

    Abstract [sv]

Social Competitive Intelligence: Socio-technical themes and values for the networking organization2015In: Journal of Intelligence Studies in Business, ISSN 2001-015X, E-ISSN 2001-015X, Vol. 5, no 3, p. 5-34Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article introduces the notion of social competitive intelligence, meaning competitive intelligence (CI) for the networking organization. A novel socio-technical framework called the Social CI Framework (SCIF) is presented, intended for analysis and design of social CI processes, methods and tools. By using a socio-technical perspective, both social and technical aspects are considered together in SCIF. The framework is founded on a theory related to enterprise 2.0 and wikinomics, and is intended to be used to study social CI using principles such as openness, participation, sharing and co-creation. The presented results are based on a literature review and an exploratory study with interviews of CI experts from Swedish organizations. SCIF explicitly distinguishes between task-oriented models and collaboration models, and models of different socio-technical perspectives. Moreover, SCIF uses the mechanisms of socio-technical themes and a socio-technical value map that relate the theoretical and empirical characteristics with the SCIF modeling method.

    Abstract [en]

The study has been carried out with the aim of finding out what a Swedish niche bank's worksystem around the use of decision support looks like. More specifically how decision support is produced and how this decision support is understood and used to partly improve internalbusiness processes. With this purpose, the research question "How is decision support developed within a Swedish niche bank and what is the role of decision support for the business and its development of internal business processes?" has been produced. The method applied in the study is a qualitative method with a case study as a research method. The data collection has been carried out through nine semi-structured interviews of which seven were carried out in the first round and two in an additional interview round The interviews were carried out with respondents who hold different roles within the business. The study used an abductive approach, a target-driven selection and interviews were held remotely. The analysis has been based on the results and the theoretical framework, which contains various subject areas linked to the content of the study, for example decision support, visualization, analyzing data, internal business processes and digital divide. Where each topic from the theory has been linked to relevant parts of the result that either emphasized or questioned the theories. The study provides a discussion around analysis, language barrier, intermediaries and also for future studies that discuss points of view and insights from this study. The study shows how decision support is central to developing various business processes internally. The creation of the decision support lies in the analysis of data which is then visualized for decision makers within the business, who partly order and partly receive these decision support. However, in connection with the decision support and its development and usage, a language barrier arises where the competence around digital tools and data differs between departments, which results in roles that have to interpret and explain the decision support.

    Abstract [en]

The literature contains three primary areas on how companies should act according to the theoryof social media. The literature resulted in three areas; the social Web, communications andmarketing. The purpose of the study was to investigate how the theory of defined areas related tothe user experience of the same areas. The purpose is investigated through a case study whereNordea has been the unit of study and social media has been represented by Facebook. Thepurpose resulted in the following main research question: How does active users on Nordea’sFacebook page relate to Nordea's involvement on Facebook? Empirical data was collectedthrough a quantitative study who intended to answer the research question. The quantitativemethod consisted of a web survey. By using a web survey responses were standardized and theresponses came from a large number of respondents, thereby increasing the capacity togeneralize. The results of the survey show that the area of communication is the area that mostquantitative motivates users to participate in Nordea’s Facebook page. It is communication thatis the mediums strength and the biggest reason for companies to participate on Facebook. Theusers experience is consistent with theories of how companies should act in social media. Thestudy conclusion is that the empirical data amplifies each field’s theoretical background.

Skype: En studie av faktorer som påverkar privatanvändandet av Skypes videofunktion2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Our time is characterized by the development of new technologies that facilitate communication between people. The need for Video Mediated Communication (VMC) is increasing because people move to other locations due to migration and global mobility. VMC provides the opportunity for millions of people around the world to “hang out” and see each other despite the distance in between. The world is "shrinking" because of the Internet and our perception of distance is changing.

VMC is becoming increasingly available, in the form of applications like Skype and MSN for mobile phones and computers, and in addition, it’s practically free.

The purpose of this thesis is to render a picture of the way in which people use Skype in the private sphere. We aim to identify possible operational forces and obstacles and their impact on the usage pattern of Skype's video feature. The study showed that Skype's video feature is used mainly to communicate with family members and close friends who are geographically remote. Video communication contributes to a sense of presence and belonging, which motivates users to overcome possible difficulties and obstacles.

    Abstract [en]

Information systems has gotten a bigger role in the field of sustainability and in the development of sustainable supply chains. Information systems (IS) and information technology (IT) is an essential tool for businesses to work sustainably. This study researches how sustainability affects the role that information systems have in supply chains and how business values can be promoted in connection to businesses attitudes towards sustainable business activities.

This study's result is based on different work roles in different industries where the organization has an important role in the supply chain. The data collection took place via semi-structured interviews. The results show that work with sustainability affects information systems since businesses change the way they work in their supply chains. Assuming that information systems is a type of work system the results show that different parts of the information system are affected. Businesses have to respond to change because a greater demand for working sustainably all the way has increased from consumers and stakeholders. This leads to businesses having to evaluate their supply chain and document how information systems affect social, economic and environmental sustainability aspects in order to improve their business activities. Sustainable development is a new area that is starting to apply in IS but it needs to be seen as a new dimension in evaluation of information systems.

    Abstract [en]

Problem: Although AI tools have come to facilitate and influence digital marketing in several ways, there is a continuing need for research on how AI can alleviate marketing problems and how the use of AI tools for marketing purposes can be facilitated for digital marketing agencies.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to demonstrate how and why machine learning can both benefit and harm digital marketing agencies, as well as what factors digital marketing agencies need to take into account if they intend to use machine learning in digital marketing.

Method: The study is based on a qualitative research strategy, with an inductive approach where six semi-structured interviews were conducted. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted to create flexibility in the individual being interviewed, and thus new insights and thoughts can arise. Thematic analysis has been used as an analysis method for the study, where the focus was aimed on identifying patterns and themes.

Conclusion: Machine learning can benefit digital marketing agencies in digital marketing by streamlining work procedures by processing data and information, freeing up time for employees and also gaining the opportunity to achieve competitive advantage. Machine learning can harm digital marketing agencies in digital marketing by excluding human participants in the work system, reducing trust in the organization and creating discomfort with active personalization if used unethically. Factors that should be taken into account by digital marketing agencies if they intend to use machine learning in digital marketing are, that digital marketing agencies can not replace human interaction, human integrity is important insofar as digital marketing agencies follow laws and regulations, the size of the business determines which priorities is made between using previous knowledge and new technology, organizations need to be transparent and AI must be used throughout the organization in order for the organization to benefit in the long term

Big data och CRM:s roll för konkurrenskraft i B2B-företag: En fallstudie kring hur konkurrenskraften i B2B-företag påverkas av big data och CRM2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As a result of the increased use of the Internet, there are a number of challenges and opportunities regarding the ability to strengthen or weaken the competitive advantage between organizations. One of the challenges is an increased need to gather and manage large amounts of data (big data) as well as the need to develop processes and strategies for customer relationship management (CRM). This study aimed to investigate how and why big data and business processes for CRM can affect the competitive advantage of B2B companies by offering a theoretical perspective and an analysis of a relevant case in the field. This was studied by applying a qualitative case study where theory and empirical data were gathered through qualitative interviews with respondents who work with CRM and data at the selected B2B company. The results of the study showed that the chosen case involving a B2B company in the technology industry can strengthen its competitive advantage as a result of including CRM in its business processes by applying strategies, value creation, multichannels, IT and data and performance assessment in its customer-related activities and processes. The results also showed that the gathering of data in customer-related processes and activities as well as analyzes of this data is a useful asset as it entails the ability to strongly impact the interaction with customers. An unforeseen discovery made was the fact that the respondents showed a reluctance to describe the circumstance of whether they work with big data, despite the fact that most respondents according to the study definition work with big data in their customer-related processes and activities. This discovery can be the basis for future research in the field of big data and B2B companies.

    Abstract [en]

Digital marketing permeates today's society and is an important part of companies creating unique competitive advantages. In addition, it has led to the growth of information digitally. Business intelligence is a system that generates useful information to the user of the system, which can be used to make better decision making

The study has been conducted by a case study, with the aim of investigating the extent to which BI can be applied to increase the profitability of digital marketing.

The results show that initially customers often think negatively about advertisements in search engines, the attitude towards advertisement can shift if the advertisement presents some sort of value to the customer. To create value knowledge is required, about customer behavior and marketing. It is important to find the right search words for the company and that these search words are sufficiently individual based, so they match the customer search.  Furthermore, the results show that to increase purchases there is more than to create effective digital marketing.

The study has found that the brand has the biggest impact on customers. Therefore to increase purchases, the focus should primarily be on brand exposure and developing effective marketing strategies.

    Abstract [en]

Digital transformation increasingly characterizes today's companies, where the rapid development in information and communication technology brings new demands from individuals, competitors and society. This requires companies to consider and often implement fundamental changes to their operations in order to maintain or gain new competitive advantages. Digital transformation is about implementing changes in work processes but also fundamental changes in an organization and has become one of the most important challenges facing companies today. This raises important research questions about how business transformation can best be understood and pursued. One of the salient aspects of digital transformation is that access to technology is rarely a challenging problem, but in the ability to rapidly evolve and benefit from it. Human resource management has become increasingly important within an organization and has become strategic in their importance for achieving competitive advantages. This is not only relevant within large organizations, but is an important component for all organizations, regardless of size.

This study aims to investigate why companies are undergoing a digital transformation of the human resources department and human resource management and what outcomes the transformation entails. The study applies a qualitative research method in order to obtain in-depth answers from the respondents. The results have shown, among other things, that the examined work system has undergone digital changes where certain business processes have been digitized. Driving forces for implementing digital changes have primarily been the need to digitize and improve various business processes within the work system as well as external factors such as laws and regulations.

Ratio and Intellectus: Towards a conceptual framework for understanding human and artificial intelligence2022In: Digitization for the next generation: ICIS 2022 Proceedings, Association for Information Systems, 2022, article id 1324Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper uses the pre-renaissance philosopher Nicolas Cusanus (1401-1464) and his concepts of ratio (calculating rationality) and intellectus (a relation to not-knowing) to assist in understanding the differences between human and artificial intelligence. The intention is to contribute to the ongoing discussions and debate pertaining to AI implementation and use, arguing that philosophy can be of ample use when it comes to understanding different types of intelligence in the digital world. The presented conceptual framework outlines the human and the artificial intelligence in terms of their characteristics in relation to Cusa's ratio and intellectus. This helps to apprehend the different forms of intelligence and, more specifically, their strengths and how they operate.

    Abstract [en]

In an increasingly digital world, companies need to be at the forefront of development in order to gain market share and be competitive. Therefore this qualitative case study intends to investigate how Business intelligence should be implemented to increase the technology acceptance among the employees. Furthermore, it is investigated how data-driven a consulting company in Sweden is. An important factor when Business intelligence is about to be implemented and applied are the employees and the company culture. It is important to normalize the collection of data, in order to create a data culture where high quality data is collected. What is more, Business intelligence is strongly dependent on the data collected maintaining a high data quality, in order to be able to create relevant reports and thereby be able to support various decision-making. When implementing a new platform, many employees are affected. This means that the platform can generate both positive and negative reactions.

Complexity at the cost of control in game design?2012In: GSTF Digital Library, Global Science and Technology Forum (GSTF) , 2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes the Model Social Game Agent (MSGA) and presents a comparison to existing strategies to create NPC behavior in video games. We present the results of a survey and an interview-study ofprofessional game developers, designers and scholars with a focus onthe social behavior of NPCs in existing gamesand the potential advantages and disadvantages of the MSGA. The results indicate that there are concerns regarding choosing to implement games AI as systemic AI (such as the MSGA) over an implementation based on scripting and behavior trees.Another question raised is the actual benefits of systemic AI and in what sense it would change the player experience. One of the potential gains of introducing theMSGA in game design would be to open upopportunitiesfor new modes of play and also open up for unexplored design spaces.

Digital transformation för en mer effektiv och tillgänglig detaljhandel: En kvalitativ studie för att analysera konsumenters kundresor och dess påverkan inom modebranschen2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digitization has become one of the most important transformations taking place and this development is important in the retail- and the fashion industry. This is due to the fashion industry being located on a global market where different sales strategies have evolved for different platforms, to respond on consumers demand for digital solutions. Digitalization has therefore played a major role in the fashion industry and with the origin of the internet, more companies in the fashion industry have implemented digital transformation. Therefore, this thesis has examined how the consumers’ customer journey affects organizations to implement digital transformation in Sweden’s fashion industry. The purpose of the present study was to examine how companies have digitized and developed their business, by implementing digital technologies to enable development of marketing strategies and digital platforms to meet consumer needs. To answer the thesis research question, the researchers used a qualitative research method consisting of semi-structured interviews, containing a total of five respondents from three different companies. In addition, three focus group interviews were conducted consisting of consumers living in Stockholm and belonging to generation Z. The participants spoke of their customer journey and how it is affected by different companies. The researchers also performed a desktop study consisting of a company’s digital transformation. This has led to the result that consumers are demanding digital solutions from companies as well as companies having to implement digital transformations. They have developed new digital platforms and marketing strategies to meet consumers’ needs. Companies have created collaborations with influencers and with other external partners to be exposed on more digital channels and platforms. Therefore, the studied consumers can be considered as participants in addition to being consumers in companies’ work systems. This has led to the conclusion that digital transformation is essential for companies in the fashion industry to be able to support consumers in their customer journey.

A public place of their own: A field study of a game café as a third place2010In: Proceedings of DiGRA Nordic 2010: Experiencing Games: Games, Play, and Players, Tampere: Digra , 2010, p. -8Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates the meaning and function of the game café as a ‘Third place’ for boys and young men who play games in a game café. As there has been relatively little focus on game cafés in Western Europe as compared to studies of game cafés in Asia this paper examines the meaning and function of a game café in Sweden. This is achieved through an ethnographic study of a game café in central Stockholm. The author argues that the game café functions as a public place of their own. This means that for this group the game café is an escape from the moral judgments and parental restrictions and control at home. It also provides young men with a local hang out to maintain, negotiate and establish relationships with friends, peers and like minded through gaming. This place is a rather restricted third place which fosters interaction within a homogenous community of people of the same gender and age group. Therefore the game café shares more similarities with a sport club than a traditional café.

Sensing game play: Exploring game play in a game cafe and a Mass LAN party2011In: Computer Games (CGAMES), 2011, Piscataway, N.J.: IEEE Communications Society, 2011, p. 134-141Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article we discuss the sensory experiences of playing computer games by exploring the sight, the sound, the taste, smell, and touch of games. We reflect on how senses and the social atmosphere gives meaning to players’ experiences of playing computer games in two co-located public settings, a game café and a mass LAN party. This discussion is related to a more general discussion concerning what it means to participate and play online and network games in a game café and a mass LAN party. The discussion is based on a field study in Sweden. We conclude by highlighting the different experiences of playing computer games and participating in those colocated game settings. In the game café playing computer games is a rather ordinary and mundane activity while playing games in the mass LAN party is to a large extent a sensational and extra ordinary event.

Sensing and Making Sense: Designing Middleware for Context Aware Computing2007Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Computing devices are becoming wireless, smaller and embedded into other artifacts. Some of them are mobile while others are built into the environment. The novel technologies are also becoming more dependent of communication with other computing devices over different kinds of networks. These interconnected devices constitute locally and globally distributed service environments that will enforce new requirements on the design of software systems. These new type of environments provide both opportunities for new types of applications as well as a number of new problems that will have to be addressed. One approach that have been suggested both in order to provide new functionalities and as a possible solution to some of the problems is to try and collect and incorporate aspects of the /context/ of a person, activity or device as a part of the computer system.

This thesis addresses some issues that have to be considered when designing this kind of systems. In particular the thesis examines how to design middleware that can support the creation of context aware applications. As a part of this work several instances of such systems have been implemented and put in use and tested in various applications. Some key problems with respect to the design of context information middleware are also identified and examined. One question that is addressed concerns the clash between the need for internal representations of context information and the goal of middleware to support a broad range of applications. Another problem that has been addressed concerns how to create means for context aware service discovery in ubiquitous computing environments. Various mechanisms that address these problems have been implemented and tested. Finally the work addresses issues related to the role of the users in this kind of systems. Implementations and experiments have been performed where users take more active roles in aspects of system maintenance and adaptation as well as in the interpretation and representation of context information.

Sitt kvar, snart kan du välja din reklam: En kvalitativ studie om tittarnas attityder till valbart reklaminnehåll på webb-TV2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This c-level paper examines if viewers' attitudes towards advertisement may be influenced with an optional service that makes it possible to choose on which commercials will get presented while watching Web TV. To gather information, we used an empirical study that involved focus group interviews with experienced participants. The study is therefore based on respondents' previous knowledge of online video in order to compare these against the new experimentally implemented service. After the study we have found that attitude change seems to have occurred: The majority of viewers believe that a selectable advertising service would increase the viewing experience for the better. However, a minority thinks that it could lead to an additional step for user’s choice, which can be judged to be too time-consuming.

    Abstract [en]

The intention of the essay was to see what Web users’ comprehension might be when watching four videos that are published on the Swedish Government’s Web site. One video contains an interview with Lena Hallengren, Minister for Youth Affairs of the Swedish Government, and in the other three Ulrica Messing, Minister for Communications and Regional Affairs of the same government, gives speeches about the governmental issues she is responsible for.

The comprehensions that were examined are those concerning the forms of presentation of the videos, the ministers’ appearances, the videos abilities to create and maintain the Web site visitors’ interest, and the visitors’ behaviours and conducts while being in contact with the Web site. The examination was carried out with the Stimulated Recall method, where the respondents’ memory of what they thought while they visited the Web site and watched the videos were collected, along with an interview where they interpreted what they had seen.

The analysis of the data was based on the theories of Marshall McLuhan, Jay D. Bolter & Richard Grusin, and Jacob Nielsen, which contain ideas about how new media incorporate older media, and how Web users comprehend and behave in their contact with the Internet.

The conclusion was that the respondents had low interest in Lena Hallengren’s video because it was too long and made them inactive. Ulrica Messing’s appearance in her videos made two of the respondents think that she was a poor performer, while the third respondent liked what she saw because she was interested in what Ulrica Messing said.

Improving Local Government - A Survey of Problems2010In: Proceedings of the IADIS International Conference e-Society 2010 / [ed] Piet Kommers and Pedro Isaías, International Association for Development of the Information Society , 2010, p. 76-84Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article is based on a survey of projects directed at improving business operations in two local government bodies in Sweden, Härnösand municipality with a population of 25,000 and Sundsvall municipality with a population of 95,000. The projects are directed at the modernization and improvement of service delivery to their citizens. Both municipalities are conducting projects that will enhance e-government. E-government aims to reform government public management, to allow for citizens’ participation in policy making and to foster efficiency and transparency. This has required the effective deployment of information systems to manage the information resources. Modern information technologies have facilitated the automation of business processes within the municipalities and the delivery of e-services to citizens, who can now access public information via the websites. This development however requires new ways of thinking which promote collaboration beyond the administrative departments and a holistic way of using the available resources. Information management is crucial to the daily decision-making processes and in establishing an efficient and service-minded organization which is customer-centered. However, critical factors regarding project implementation, change management business processes and the challenges of e-government will have to be addressed if successful achievement of agile government structures is to be attained. The article therefore highlights the challenges that still persist as local government bodies try to espouse the modernization process and identifies the areas that need closer examination.

CRM och arbetssystem i förändring: En kvalitativ fallstudie om faktorer som leder till förändring av arbetssystem, aktörsroller och aktiviteter vid utveckling av CRM2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

CRM is an information-producing information system used by organizations to register and manage information about past, present and potential customers. Customers can easily find information, reviews, and prices from competitors, which has strengthened consumers' bargaining power. It is therefore becoming increasingly important for companies to not only generate new customers, but also attract existing customers for recurring business and keep existing customers happy. Organizations need to realize that a successful CRM-strategy often involves extensive change and therefore requires a lot of commitment and planning. Employees from all areas such as marketing, sales and customer service may also need to be trained to have a consistent customer focus that values customer service and satisfaction. Previous studies have examined how CRM as an information system affects employees' roles and activities in organizations. This case study examines changes in work systems, actor roles and activities in the development of CRM as well as factors that lead to change. A qualitative research strategy was adopted as the method for this case study. The case studied consists of a Nordic corporate group in the detached house industry and the empirical data on which the case study is based has been collected via seven semi-structured interviews. The results of the study based on empirical data and analysis show that work systems, actor roles and activities change in the development of a CRM. Support from management, adapted training and a certain degree of enforcement were some factors that were identified to have a major impact on work systems, actor roles and activities in the development of CRM.

Understanding Interactive Digital Narrative: Immersive Expressions for a Complex Time2023Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This remarkably clearly written and timely critical evaluation of core issues in the study and application of interactive digital narrative (IDN) untangles the range of theories and arguments that have developed around IDN over the past three decades.

Looking back over the past 30 years of theorizing around interactivity, storytelling, and the digital across the fields of game design/game studies, media studies, and narratology, as well as interactive documentary and other emerging forms, this text offers important and insightful correctives to common misunderstandings that pervade the field. This book also changes the perspective on IDN by introducing a comprehensive conceptual framework influenced by cybernetics and cognitive narratology, addressing limitations of perspectives originally developed for legacy media forms. Applying its framework, the book analyzes successful works and lays out concrete design advice, providing instructors, students, and practitioners with a more precise and specific understanding of IDN.

This will be essential reading for courses in interactive narrative, interactive storytelling, and game writing, as well as digital media more generally.

Interactive digital narrative (IDN): new ways to represent complexity and facilitate digitally empowered citizens2022In: New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia, ISSN 1361-4568, E-ISSN 1740-7842, Vol. 28, no 3-4, p. 76-96Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this overview paper, we consider interactive digital narratives (IDN) as a means to represent and enable understanding of complex topics both at the public level (e.g. global warming, the COVID-19 pandemic, migration, or e-mobility) and at the personal level (trauma and other mental health issues, interpersonal relationships). We discuss scholarly, artistic, and non-fiction approaches to complexity, point out limitations of traditional media to represent complex issues, and describe the foundational advantages of IDN in this regard, using the SPP model as a conceptual lens. Then, we describe the problem space of IDN for complexity, and what aspects need further work in order to more fully realise the potential of IDN to represent complex topic in education and public communication.

Alternate realities in interactive digital narratives – understanding and improving design and prosocial effects through empirical methods2024In: Multimedia tools and applications, ISSN 1380-7501, E-ISSN 1573-7721, Vol. 83, p. 46757-46778Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Interactive digital narratives (IDNs) create alternate realities using both fictional and non-fiction material. The interactive aspect of IDN turns audiences into participants and enables the exploration of alternative perspectives and actions within a single artifact. Such multifaceted representations make IDN a vehicle for representing complex issues, a crucial capability at a time when the limits of traditional narrative media to adequately represent complex issues such as climate change become apparent. Conversely, properly evaluated, generalized knowledge about how exactly IDNs engage and influence us and what this means for the design of such works is still scant and thus this topic needs scholarly attention. In this overview paper, we discuss the potential of IDN, but also the difficulties of realizing this potential in terms of design and of verifying the effectiveness through empirical research methods. The potential of IDN as dynamic, participatory, and encyclopedic artifacts can be clearly expressed, yet the same cannot be said when it comes to the design and especially the evaluation of intended prosocial effects, the topic this paper is focused on. We start by identifying the problem of IDN design resulting from a combination of the lack of generalized knowledge and formal professional training. Then, we discuss the challenge of measuring the effectiveness of IDN design for prosocial effects and report on several case studies. In this context, we discuss methodological issues and advocate for best practices. Finally, we consider future steps in addressing the continuing challenge of evaluating IDNs.
