Designprincipers applicerbarhet på domänen streamad-TV2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In our study, we investigated how the streamed TV domain relates to existing design principles for web design. Further, we have investigated whether there are specific characteristics of the domain that the design principles do not cover. In the survey we have studied two sites which are representative of the streamed TV domain. Finally, we discuss how applicable the design principles are for the domain and the specific characteristics that would require new or further developed design principles.

Vem bryr sig om etisk data?: En explorativ metodstudie om hur företag kan reflektera kring omsorg i syfte att fatta etiska beslut om data2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

When the data protection regulation was introduced in 2018, the aim was to create uniformprotection for privacy in personal data. Despite this, there is still a lack of trust among manyusers about how companies actually process their personal data. This highlights the need fornew methods and tools that can support companies to handle personal data in an ethical andresponsible manner. Based on a theoretical and relational framework for ethics of care, thisstudy developed a set of questions to emphasize ethical reflection in the development ofdata-driven services. Through a design exploratory perspective, the set of questions weredeveloped during iterations, and through two workshops as research methods. The workshopsessions were conducted with researchers from Sweden's research institute as well asrepresentatives from two pseudonymous companies that collaborate in collecting citizens'location data. The result showed that the question package fulfilled different functions ofpromoting care, and thus ethical reflection around the handling of personal data. Theparticipants were aware of the ethical challenges that exist when collecting users' locationdata, based on users' needs. The participants had the ability to illuminate these challengesthemselves, but did not know how to respond to the challenges in practice.

Datorprogram i skolmiljö: en utvald grundskola som fallstudie2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis I'm trying to investigate how good educational computer programs work in elementary school. I delimited the study to contain one elementary school in the stages of 6 to 9. The method I used was qualitative and the approach was inductive. I interviewed four teachers and five pupils as the way to collect data for the study. The theories I used were parts from different books with authors, which have done similar studies and researches. I also used the elementary school course documentations as theories.

From this study I can tell that the selected school's programs are best suited for background information. The programs are not as good for deeper knowledge. The motivation gets better among pupils when using the programs. The programs for mathematic follow their course documentation better than the programs for the social-oriented subjects do. The interviewed teachers and pupils want more programs, and the ability to use the programs fully (which aren?t possibly today due to some circumstances). This study may be continued in the future to include other schools in Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

Based on the search forest for positive programs as defined by Bol and Degerstedt, we define a tabulation-based framework that is sound and complete (when floundering does not occur) w.r.t. the well-founded semantics. In contrast to SLS-resolution as proposed by Przymusinski and by Ross, a positivistic computation rule is not required. Moreover, unlike SLG-resolution due to Chen and Warren, our proposal relies on tabulation for both positive and negative recursion without losing the clear separation of the search space from search strategies. In particular, the newly proposed search forest is finite for nonfloundering functor-free programs.

Citizen OSINT Analysts: Motivations of Open-Source Intelligence Volunteers2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The amount of open-source information – that is, data, images, and footage that is openly available to the public - is growing exponentially. With it, so is the number of citizens analysing this data to form open-source intelligence (OSINT). Using the 2022 invasion of Ukraine as a case study, this study highlights the motivations behind the citizen OSINT analysts who are uncovering events on the frontline and verifying significant amounts of data from such events. Through interviews with 10 citizen OSINT analysts – all voluntarily contributing to OSINT in relation to the invasion of Ukraine, as well as other major OSINT projects – this study demonstrates the motivations behind this growing community. The findings reflect a new era of participation and advocacy and are a demonstration of self-determination theory. The findings demonstrate citizens’ sceptic views towards traditional media but also, that with a more analytical approach, with improved transparency and collaboration there is reason to be optimistic about the future of journalism and audience engagement.

Numerical simulation of the coupling problems of a solid sphere impacting on a liquid free surface2010Inngår i: Mathematics and Computers in Simulation, ISSN 0378-4754, E-ISSN 1872-7166, Vol. 80, nr 8, s. 1664-1673Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a model, using a phase-field method, that is able to simulate the motion of a solid sphere impacting on a liquid surface, including the effects of capillary and hydrodynamic forces. The basic phenomena that were the subject of our research effort are the small scale mechanism such as the wetting property of the solid surface which control the large scale phenomena of the interaction. The coupled problem during the impact will be formulated by the inclusion of the surface energies of the solid surface in the formulation, which gives a reliable prediction of the motion of solid objects in/on/out of a liquid surface and the hydrodynamic behaviours at small scales when the inertia of fluid is less important than its surface tension. Numerical results at different surface wettabilities and impact conditions will be presented and compared with the experiments of Duez el al. [C. Duez, C. Ybert, C. Clanet, L. Bocquet, Nat. Abstract [en]

This paper introduces a database of sound-based applications running on the Android mobile platform. The longterm objective is to provide a state-of-the-art of mobile applications dealing with sound and music interaction. After exposing the method used to build up and maintain the database using a non-hierarchical structure based on tags, we present a classification according to various categories of applications, and we conduct a preliminary analysis of the repartition of these categories reflecting the current state of the database.

    Abstract [en]

The use of technology in artistic contexts presents interesting challenges regarding the processes in which engineers, artists and performers work together. The artistic intent and goals of the participants are relevant both when shaping the development practice, and in defining and refining the role of technology in practice. In this paper we present strategies for structuring the development process, based on iterative design and participatory design. The concepts are described in theory and examples are given of how they have been successfully applied. The cases make heavy use of different types of prototyping and this practice is also discussed. The development cases all relate to a single artifact, a gestural voice processing instrument called The Throat. This artifact has been in use since it was developed, and from that experience, three cases are presented. The focus of these cases is on how artistic vision through practice can recontextualize technology, and, without rebuilding it, redefine it and give it a new role to play.

    Abstract [en]

Developing new technology for artistic practice requires other methods than classical problem solving. Some of the challenges involved in the development of new musical instruments have affinities to the realm of wicked problems. Wicked problems are hard to define and have many different solutions that are good or bad (not true or false). The body of possible solutions to a wicked problem can be called a design space and exploring that space must be the objective of a design process. In this paper we present effective methods of iterative design and participatory design that we have used in a project developed in collaboration between the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the University College of Opera, both in Stockholm. The methods are outlined, and examples are given of how they have been applied in specific situations. The focus lies on prototyping and evaluation with user participation. By creating and acting out scenarios with the user, and thus asking the questions through a prototype and receiving the answers through practice and exploration, we removed the bottleneck represented by language and allowed communication beyond verbalizing. Doing this, even so-called tacit knowledge could be activated and brought into the development process.

What is the Market Value of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning?: The Role of Innovativeness and Collaboration for Performance2022Inngår i: Technological forecasting & social change, ISSN 0040-1625, E-ISSN 1873-5509, Vol. 180, artikkel-id 121716Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

As AI and ML technologies are increasingly incorporated into products, there is a need to understand the role of these incorporations in enhancing performance. This study uses new types of methodology related to textual data analysis to explore the question of whether there is a difference between market sentiments—and consequently marketing and business performance—when it comes to communicating either AI or ML. We test and confirm the hypothesis that AI rather than ML attracts more positive sentiments in the marketplace. Additionally, we find that AI is mostly used when the discussion centers on innovativeness, and that discussions concerning collaboration in these technologies attract more positive sentiments. We further contribute methodologically by leveraging textual data available online on the titles of web-page contents and the results of the Vader sentiment analysis to test our hypothesis. We conclude that, to enhance business performance, firms should communicate using AI-related vocabulary especially when the topic is innovativeness and collaboration.

    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates a prototype of an interaction design for a flexible natural language user interface with a minimal set of gestures and natural language commands. The prototype is evaluated using a Hi-Fi simulation approach that allows the enactment of an interfaces that accommodates gesture and speech input for directive commands. In the scenario users were guiding a robot equipped with a camera and microphone through a simple maze. The data from six users were collected and subsequently analysed with respect to the users' communicative behavior. In the analysis of the data special consideration was given to the gesture repertoire. It was found that users, when presented with static images of gestures, added their own dynamic patterns. Furthermore the users appeared to give precedence to the deictic component of gestures that meant left/right. Users were also opportunistic meaning that when they could they used predefined goal points and let the robot use its autonomous navigation to find its way.

    Abstract [en]

This commentary to Greasley and Prior's paper "Mixtapes and turntablism: DJs' perspective on musical shape" extends the findings of the study by looking at the turntablism perspective. First, a general discussion on the study's method and background is given. Then, the role of turntables as musical instruments in creating musical shape is outlined. Finally, some relationships between turntablism techniques, expressive performances and musical shape are presented. In general, the findings in the study support previously published studies in this insufficiently researched area.

Use of soundscapes for providing information about distance left in train journeys2012Inngår i: Proceedings of the 9th Sound and Music Computing Conference, 2012, s. 79-84Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a study in the framework of the ISHT Interior sound design of high-speed trains project. During a train journey between the cities of Stockholm and Gï¿œvle, Sweden, 9 travellers participated in a listening experiment to evaluate the use of sonification to convey non-speech based information about the travel. We tested sonification for communicating the distance between two stations in the train journey. The participants could activate an iconographic representation of the sound in the landscape outside and listen to it through headphones in three conditions: with music, with a soundscape or with silence. Their interaction was logged, and ratings of their stated sense of knowing where the train was between the departure and arrival stations were recorded. Preliminary results show that our sonification helped participants to get an idea of the distance left for reaching the next station, and also that listening to the sonification was experienced as an engaging and pleasant activity.

    Abstract [en]

This paper describes a system for accommodating active listening for persons with hearing aids or cochlear implants, with a special focus on children at an early stage of cognitive development and with additional physical disabilities. A system called the Soundscraper is proposed and consists of a software part in Pure data and a hardware part using an Arduino microcontroller with a combination of sensors. For both the software and hardware development it was important to always ensure that the system was flexible enough to cater for the very different conditions that are characteristic of the intended user group. The Soundscraper has been tested with 25 children with good results. An increased attention span was reported, as well as positively surprising reactions from children where the caregivers were unsure whether they could hear at all. The sound synthesis methods, the gesture sensors and the employed parameter mapping were all simple, but they provided a controllable and sufficiently complex sound environment even with limited interaction. A possible future outcome of the application is the adoption of long-time analysis of sound preferences as opposed to traditional audiological investigations.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper we introduce an application for tablet devices with Android operating system called The Music Puzzle. This work is part of an ongoing projectcalled The Soundparkï¿œUsing modern smartphones to create interactive listening experiences for hearing impaired. In the Soundpark, we intend to provide different experimental applications for interacting with sound. The aim of the presented study was to create interactive and game-inspired listening experiences for persons with hearing impairmens (and possibly using hearing aids or having cochlea implants). Audio-based programs constitute a significant part of the Android market, but the scopes of existing applications are limited. Modern smart devices open up new possibilities both in terms of usingexternal information as input and providing real-time audio feedback to the user, and the Music Puzzle has a novel approach that explores the new possibilities.

Higher education meets private use of social media technologies: An explorative study of students’ use2017Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The work in this thesis sets out to explore how students perceive social media use in the context of higher education. More precisely, the focus is on students' use of, experience with, and attitudes toward the integration of social media into their learning environment. To complement this, teachers' incentives for including social media have been studied; to some extent their communication, attitudes, and online activity were also analyzed.

The four different studies included in this thesis incorporated three major types of social media technologies: a social networking service (Facebook), a collaborative editable webpage (Wikipedia), and a microblog (Twitter). The studies adopted different approaches to data collection and analysis, including both qualitative and quantitative methods. The specific methods for each study were chosen to accommodate the research questions, for reasons of access to information, and due to ethical considerations.

While each study differs in starting point and scope and provide particular contributions to the research area, the main contributions of the work as a whole are connected to findings on attitude changes, the professional role in students' use of social media, their teacher-like actions, confusion regarding moving between the identified roles, and the implementation of social media in higher education.

The findings presented here are appropriate for guiding a nuanced discussion regarding the implementation of social media technologies in higher education, an implementation that was found to be contingent on appropriate use and a suitable social context. The findings suggest that the inclusion of social media in non-private contexts generally needs to have a clear aim and strategy for achieving it. The roles defined in this work - in terms of both being a student and the private and professional roles - could also serve as the basis for further exploration in other areas with comparable hierarchies in which it is necessary to understand how the individual relates to self-presentation, technological constraints, and roles, such as the relation between an employer and employee.

    Abstract [en]

For a large part of its history cognitive science has been grounded in views of the mind based on the traditional Cartesian dualisms. These dichotomies have been reinforced in particular by the view of the mind as an encased symbol-processing system ''protected from the external world'' (Newell, A., Rosenbloom, P. S., & Laird J. E. (1990). Symbolic architectures for cognition. In M. I. Posner (Ed.), Foundations of cognitive science, Cambridge, MA: Bradford Books/MIT Press, pp. 93-131: 107). Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) seeks to supersede Cartesianism, thinking about cognition and culture as mutually constitutive of each other. This approach analyzes thought processes as embedded in and manifested through systems of historically developing, culturally mediated activity. Consequently for CHAT, a basic unit for the study of human thought is joint mediated activity. In this paper we will discuss an example of research that follows the CHAT approach to the analysis of learning and development. The data sample is taken from a session of the Fifth Dimension, an after-school activity designed to implement CHAT principles in order to promote the cognitive and social development of adult and child participants alike. Standardiserade affärssystem: Stödjer de företagens arbetsprocess?2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
