Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how eight pre-school teachers conceptualise and talk about the concept "Fundamental values" that has been presented by the Swedish National Agency for Education. To examine this, eight preschool teachers were interviewed using five open-ended questions related to how they view the use of the concept "Fundamental values" in the preschool, where they get theoretical input for their work with these values, how they work with fundamental social values at their preschool and how they view their strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvements within that framework.

The study uses the social construction perspective to examine how the preschool teachers talk about the fundamental social values and their work at their pre-schools. The perspective is used to highlight how the concept "Fundamental values" is conceptualised by these eight preschool teachers compared to how it is conceptualised by the Swedish National Agency of Education, what values they express in regards to the concept and how they gain knowledge to further improve their work on "Fundamental values".

The results show how the pre-school teachers have conceptualised "Fundamental values" in accordance with the Swedish National Agency of Education and previous research in the area. The teachers stated that the "Fundamental values" permeate the preschool. The pre-school teachers are role model for these value and some values are discussed and showcased in a way easily understood by the children. The teachers studied little or no research to improve their work with "Fundamental values". Colleagues were the main source used to gain further knowledge and inspiration in their work with "Fundamental values" which shows that it is a socially constructed concept that needs to be understood in its cultural context.
