Abstract [en]

It is in a time of changes when the human being mainly seeks for its identity. In today’s globalized and internationalized society where people meet whom belongs to various religions, talks different languages and are carrying on different values and previous experiences. This has resulted in a multiculturalism and diversity in the "Swedish school". As a teacher and pupil in this school of multiculturalism you are daily faced by individuals that either you define yourself as or in relation to.

The purpose of my study is for me to show how pupils with foreign background look on the multicultural school, and also how they create their identity in relation to the diversity offered by the school. I visualize in my study which concepts and reasoning the pupils use when they are talking about their school and how they create themselves. The study was based on two "focus group interviews" conducted in a school in a multicultural community in Stockholm.

I have through my focus group interviews tried to find answers to how they look at the multicultural school and how they form their identity in relation to each other. The socio-cultural perspective on the teaching is the theoretical basis of the essay. In addition to the socio-cultural perspective I have chosen to bring up three concepts which have been essential for this essay, "multiculturalism/diversity", "ethnicity" and "identity".

The pupils who participated in the study is in favor of the multicultural school, where they talk about a friendship above "limits" as nationality and religion, and also a knowledge about their fellow pupils. The identity is formed and adopted to the social context pupils are in, they align who they are after the context they are in. The "Swede" on the other hand, is missing in the multicultural school, where the Swedish language is considered being desirable. The pupils are creating their identity in relation to a "Swedish one".
