Abstract [en]

The purpose of my study is using a narrative approach from a student perspective through the feelings that show the cultural encounters of immigrant students with the Swedish school. I want through my study have an understanding of how students are affected in their interaction with the Swedish culture. I also want to analyze and understand their feelings and experiences. Are emotions negative or positive? My theoretical framework includes the following concepts: Emotions, treatment, ethnicity, identity and code-switching.

An important element of my study is to understand students' emotional experiences. That is why i am using a qualitative research method in the form of a group discussion. The interview took place in a school in the south of Stockholm, and consisted of five students, which all had immigrated to Sweden from their previous country. Nobody was thus born in Sweden. The selection was thus based on where the students came from. The results of my study showed that students were "uncertain", "afraid" and "anxious" not to perform equally well as "Swedish”. I mean a student who has both parents with Sweden roots. Pupils' attitudes were so strong and determined that they didn’t not alter their identity. They knew where they came from and where they belong and they gave me the impression that they had a sense of "pride" at being immigrants. The students always used terms such as "we" against "them" and made permanent distinctions between "immigrant" and "Swedes”. This led the immigrant student to feel united and secure in their group and feel protected too.

My results showed that students were uncertain and didn’t dare to admit that they sometimes felt a "need" to speak good Swedish to succeed in the Swedish school. Students feel well received and no one feel different or leaving apart when the majority of the school students have a foreign descent, which means that students become one of "them" and feel integrated like one of "them.
