A freer use of our resources : The launch of a discourse of creativity in 1970s Sweden and the struggle for the knowledge economy. (English)
Abstract [en]

Creativity is seen as a vital economic resource in our time. This study investigates the beginnings of this idea by analyzing how the Personnel Administrative Council (PA‐council), a Swedish psychological research institute, launched a discourse of creativity in the 1970s. By way of a discourse analysis of educational material for fostering creativity in the workplace I show how the PA-council aimed to transform the worker, the organization and the idea of economic value. While previous research has pointed to how creativity was important in the formation of the idea of human capital and the so-called knowledge- and information economy, this study deepens this understanding by showing how the PA-council conceptualized the inner life as a source of value. The PA-council positioned their network-model for the creative organization against the firm of the Fordist variety and criticized its lack of "humanity", flexibility and innovation. This finding complicates previous research of the "humanization" of working life as the result of countercultures and radical critique. This discursive struggle was set in the theatre of the important questions of their time, including a struggling economy in the wake of the oil shock, debates about economic democracy and strike waves that criticized Taylorism and the alienation of work.
