Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore parents' experiences and needs of support during the process surrounding their adolescents treatment when placed in an out of home care facility. My focus group is parents to youths with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Those disorders could result in severe behavior problems for the youths, and an out of home treatment can be a final solution to solve those adolescents problems. This is a long process, and my hypothesis is that it's important to investigate the parental perspective of this process. Former science shows that parental involvement in their adolescents' treatment and recovery generates positive results from more than one perspective; Parental empowerment seems to improve, the risk of relapse is reduced, the return back to the families seems less complicated and the relations between the adolescents and parents improves. Parents' experience of involvement also improves their trust according to their youths' residential treatment. With an approach in Systems Theory my aim is to understand the experiences and needs from a parental perspective which could be helpful to increase the quality of out of home treatment for this target group.
